What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed to cover you for a range of unexpected events that could happen when you’re travelling overseas or in Australia. Allianz Travel Insurance can cover costs like travel delays or emergency medical treatment, or the cost of replacing items that were lost or stolen during your trip. 1

We have Basic, Comprehensive, Domestic, and Multi-Trip Plans to choose from, with varying levels of cover to help you when you need it most. Our plans are available for singles, duos or families. Read through our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for detailed information about our plans to see which level of cover is right for you.

For an additional premium, you can choose to add an Adventure Pack, Cruise Pack, or Snow Pack to eligible plans. Increased Item Limits Cover can also be added to insure your luggage, personal effects or valuables should something happen to them while travelling.

You have the option to vary the base excess when you buy your policy (premium adjustment will apply depending on the excess selected). The choice is yours.

Without travel insurance, you run the risk of incurring some significant expenses that may take years to pay off.

If you’re travelling overseas, travel insurance is an important consideration for unexpected medical bills and hospitalisation. Other unforeseen expenses could include the replacement of lost or stolen luggage, delays or cancellations to your trip, and many other unfortunate scenarios.

We don’t cover medical expenses under our Domestic Travel Insurance policy. However, you may wish to take out insurance for domestic flight changes or cancellations, lost or stolen baggage, or rental vehicle excess. Refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for more information.

Travel insurance may cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip, such as emergency medical assistance if you become ill or injured while travelling overseas, including arranging your evacuation if needed.

Other incidents that travel insurance may cover include costs due to unexpected delays and cancellations, rental vehicle excess, and personal liability. You also have the option to purchase additional cover for activities such as adventure sports or skiing, although this isn’t available on all plans.

Cover limits vary from insurance provider to insurance provider, as do policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions, so it’s important to read the Product Disclosure Statement to make sure you fully understand what’s covered, the limits applying to the policy, and to make sure the policy is appropriate for your needs.

The length of your Travel Insurance policy is largely dependent on the travel dates you supply. When obtaining a quote, or buying a policy, you’ll be prompted to enter in your departure and return dates – this will be the period of cover for all benefits except the cancellation benefit, which begins from the date your policy is issued.

The period of cover is also shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which is sent to you at the time of purchase. You may want to extend the length of your holiday abroad (and therefore need an extension of your period of cover) and you may be able to do this within specified timeframes.

If you think you may travel more than once a year, you may wish to consider a Multi-Trip policy . Different start and end dates apply, refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for full details.

It’s up to you when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance, however, keep in mind these three things:

  • You can buy our Travel Insurance up to 12 months in advance.
  • You must buy Allianz Travel Insurance before you start your journey. Your journey starts when any traveller named on the Certificate of Insurance leaves home or work in Australia to begin travel.
  • Depending on the plan you choose you may have trip cancellation cover, which covers unexpected trip cancellation, rescheduling or shortening from the date your Certificate of Insurance is issued. So, consider buying our Travel Insurance as soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all your trip as you may be covered for such events before you depart.

Yes, if you change your mind after you buy your Travel Insurance policy, you may cancel it within 14 days of your Certificate of Insurance being issued.

You’ll be given a full refund of the premium you’ve paid, provided you’ve not started your journey and don’t intend to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.

When considering which policy is right for you, make sure you consider your needs, as well as your financial situation. Reading the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination (TMD) is a good place to start as they will give you more detail, so you can decide if the plan is right for you.

Allianz Travel Insurance offers a number of travel insurance plans – Basic , Comprehensive , Domestic , Non-Medical or Multi-Trip Travel Insurance . You can see more detailed information on our Compare Cover Options page .

  • Accidental death or disability
  • Additional accommodation and transportation expenses
  • Amendment or cancellation costs
  • Delayed luggage allowance
  • Loss of income
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Theft of money
  • Travel delay
  • Rental car insurance excess

As well as the benefits explained above, you can use the following options to vary your cover where necessary. Generally, these variations will attract an increased premium.

  • Cancellation cover. You can add trip cancellation cover onto your International Comprehensive plan up to a nominated amount. This means you won't be left entirely out of pocket if your trip has to be cancelled due to a coverable illness or misadventure.
  • Cruise cover. Required if you are travelling on a cruise for any or all claims related to cruises .
  • Increase luggage item limits. If you're travelling with expensive items that exceed the limit mentioned in the product disclosure statement (PDS), you might want to consider increasing your luggage cover for that item.
  • Motorcycle/moped riding. Cover if you're planning to ride a motorcycle or moped on your trip as a driver or pillion. Along with cover, there are other conditions such as needing the appropriate permits, wearing a helmet and the bike having an engine size less than 250cc, just to name a few.
  • Winter sports. Cover if you're hitting the slopes on your trip, specifically for skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling.

cross icon

All insurance plans have their own set of circumstances where you won't be covered. Generally, Australia Post will not pay your claim if it relates to:

  • Participating in hunting, running with the bulls or mountaineering, along with a selection of other high-risk activities
  • Any unlawful act committed by you
  • You travelling against the advice of a medical practitioner
  • Pregnancy complications after the 24th week or when you have experienced complications prior to buying the policy
  • A multiple pregnancy or one where the conception was medically assisted
  • An elective medical or dental treatment , cosmetic procedure or body modification (including tattoos or piercing)
  • Self-inflicted injury or illness, suicide or attempted suicide
  • Your impairment due to you drinking too much alcohol
  • Insolvency of a travel agent , tour operator or accommodation provider

Make sure you review Australia Post's PDS for a detailed breakdown of what won't be covered, found under its list of general exclusions .

You can submit your claim by downloading a claim form online and posting it to the Australia Post Travel Insurance claim team at:

Australia Post Claims Travel Insurance Partners PO Box 168 North Sydney NSW 2060

Alternatively, you can submit a claim online by following these steps:

  • Head to https://claims.travelinsurancepartners.com.au/auspost
  • Enter your full name and policy number to log in
  • Describe the incident and provide expenses
  • Upload any documents to support your claim
  • Submit, and you should hear back within 10 working days

Australia Post's travel policies are nothing to sneeze at. You'll find generous limits that rival even our best travel insurance picks, especially if you're looking for comprehensive cover when hiring a car. Its flexible plans allow you to tailor your policy not just with optional add-ons but also your choice of cancellation cover and excess.

Once you look under the bonnet, though, you might find reasons to think twice. Australia Post's COVID-19 cover will cover you for overseas medical expenses and additional accommodation and travel expenses, but if you want cover for cancellation costs or cruise travel, you're out of luck. Pregnant travellers should read the fine print as well, as there are certain exclusions that could mean you're not covered, especially if you're having twins or travelling after your 23rd week of pregnancy.

How long do I have to make a travel insurance claim?

You have 60 days from your return date to submit your travel insurance claim. If you're still waiting on documentation to support your claim but worried you won't make the deadline, you can start the process and submit the additional documentation later.

Can I take out a policy with Australia Post if I'm already overseas?

Yes, you can buy travel insurance if you are already overseas with Australia Post. If you purchase an Australia Post Travel Insurance policy on your trip after leaving Home, the cover is subject to a 3 day no-cover period. For other options, you can read our guide on Travel insurance for Australians already overseas .

How do I cancel my travel insurance with Australia post

Avatar

You’ll need to contact them directly.

You can reach them on 1300 728 015 Monday to Friday (8am-7pm EST), Saturday (9am-4pm EST) and Sunday (10am-3pm EST).

Best of luck!

I am 90 years old and in good health, can I get travel insurance with Australia Post?

Avatar

Thanks for reaching out to Finder.

Australia Post offers competitively-priced travel insurance for Seniors (people aged 60 years or over). However, please note that their policy availability is subject to age, the excess, trip duration, area of travel, existing medical conditions and extra cover options.

Policies may not be available to all travellers and reduced limits may be applied to travellers over 70 years of age.

You can go directly to their website and request for a quote or you can also call them for further assistance.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Charisse

We are over from UK at sons are we covered if we take out travel insurance to visit Bali.

Avatar

Hi Lorraine,

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

The cover depends on which type of travel insurance you get with Australia Post. I suggest that you contact them directly regarding your trip to Bali.

If you’re still looking around, you may check and compare your Bali travel insurance options . Travellers to Bali are advised to keep themselves updated using the Smartraveller site .

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other enquiries.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Jeni

Do you cover seniors over 75 with pre-existing medical conditions? We are travelling to the Americas not being taken just Europe, cruising to South Africa and flying back to Australia.

Australia Post may be able to offer cover for your medical conditions, however if they cannot, they may be able to offer a standard policy with cover for things other than your medical conditions. You must attempt a quote from their official page before they can know.

If you are still looking around, you can enter your travel details from our travel insurance for seniors form . The search tools should allow you to compare policies from more than 20 Australian brands.

I am on a holiday in UK. I am having my Australian post travel insurance. Few days back I felt I am losing my hearing, so I went and check the same.so they advice me to where a hearing aid, so I happen to go for it. My Question is ? can I clam the cost of the earing aid.?

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Cover-More travel insurance FAQs

We want you to have a fantastic holiday. But if something goes wrong? Don’t worry – we’ll be here for you. Discover more about our cover and how we can help you on your next holiday now.

What does Cover-More travel insurance cover?

Like you, we know how exciting travel can be, but we also know every traveller is different and has different needs. You might be a backpacker on a tight budget or a senior spending the kids’ inheritance on a bucket list trip (go you!), which is why we cover lots of things.

Whoever you are, and however you like to travel, we offer cover for more than 80 fun-packed activities in all our base plans, from abseiling to archery, camel riding to canyoning, and snorkelling to sandboarding, and many more. We’ve also got optional cover for cruises, snow holidays, and motorcycling!

And, while we hope you’ll never need to ask, we’re also here to help if something goes wrong. You can contact us 24/7 for assistance, which means you’ll never be on your own if your plans go a little pear-shaped.

We also have cover for less exciting things like flight delays, losing a bag, dropping a laptop, and much more. Plus, cover for emergency medical and dental costs overseas and COVID-19 (yes, it’s still lurking around…), and other unforeseen expenses that crop up while you’re away.

Want to know more? Have a poke around in our Cover-More travel insurance benefits page to learn more about our cover. You can also find the full details on all the benefits and benefit amounts included in our travel insurance plans in the PDS.

Ready to choose the right plan for you? You can compare our plans now or get a quote.

How do I get a Cover-More travel insurance quote?

It’s easy and fast, promise. Just fill in the quote box at the top of our Cover-More homepage (or any page across the entire site – take your pick!) with all your trip details and hit the big orange ‘Get quote’ button.

You’ll then see the plan(s) we have that are suitable for your trip based on the details you’ve shared, plus have the chance to vary your policy with extra cover options and declare any existing medical conditions.

To make sure you get the best quote for you, use our travel insurance checklist to help you through the process.

It should be walk in the park, which is hopefully the vibe of your upcoming trip, too.

Does Cover-More have an app?

Of course we do – we're quite modern, you know – and it’s award-winning!

Our Cover-More app not only provides you with your policy in your pocket, but it also offers tips about your destination, can send you real-time safety alerts about incidents nearby as you’re travelling, and gives you tap-to-call access to our brilliant 24/7 emergency assistance team.

You can download it here. You’ll love it. (We do.)

Can I cancel my Cover-More travel insurance policy after I’ve bought it?

Absolutely! You are free to go... but do know we’ll miss you.

We offer a 21-day cooling-off period if you decide not to take us with you on your trip.

To be eligible to cancel your travel insurance policy during this period, you’ll need to still be at home (i.e. you haven’t started your trip yet) and not have made a claim or intend on making a claim.

If you want to find our more, take a peek inside the PDS.

Where can I find the Cover-More travel insurance PDS?

Great question! You can access the PDS here →

We like to think of the PDS as your travel insurance guru – it tells you everything you need to know, including what you’re covered for and what you’re not. Yes, it’s got all the information we could possibly tell you about your cover, so reading it means you ensure you’ve got the right cover for your trip before you’ve even let home.

Even though it sounds a bit dull (it is a bit), keeping it handy when you travel is also something to consider. But don’t worry – we make this easy for you. Once you’re a Cover-More customer, you’ll receive your policy details via email, but if you download our app, it’s super easy to access your policy detail and the PDS in there, too.

How can I contact Cover-More?

Whether it’s via our app, email, or phone, we'd love to hear from you.

If you’re already travelling and it’s an emergency, please contact our emergency assistance team on +61 2 8907 5619 from anywhere in the world. If you’ve got our app, open it and tap the assistance button at the bottom and follow the prompts to connect with us.

If you’re still in Australia and have a question about your Cover-More travel insurance policy, our cover, or anything that isn’t an emergency, our customer service team can help on 1300 72 88 22. If you’ve got a question about a claim, our claims team can chat to you on 1300 36 26 44. Both teams will be around to answer your call during these hours:

  • Monday-Friday: 8am – 7pm AEDT
  • Saturday: 9am – 4pm AEDT
  • Sunday: 10am – 3pm AEDT

Does Cover-More travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

The answer is yes! We don't think a medical condition should stop you exploring the world, and neither should you.

We're rather proud of our travel insurance plans, even more so because we provide cover for many existing medical conditions in our base plans. (Our existing medical conditions cover page has lots of useful information about this – including the conditions you’ll need to meet for this cover to apply.)

Some medical conditions are a bit complex (and some travellers have more than one), which is why we have an online medical assessment that allows you to easily declare all your conditions so we can quickly tell you if we can provide you with cover.

Good to know: After you take the assessment, including cover in your policy for some conditions may mean you’re charged an extra premium, while some we can include in your policy for no additional cost. To find out, get a quote and take the assessment.

Want to learn more about our cover for medical conditions? We share all our helpful information on our existing medical conditions cover page.

How do I make a Cover-More travel insurance claim?

We’re sorry you've had a travel mishap, but the good news is this: we’ve made it super easy for you to make a travel insurance claim online using our online claims tool. It’s available 24/7, so you can submit your claim from anywhere, at any time. (Just make sure you lodge it within 60 days of arriving home!)

Our travel insurance claims page explains all the information you’ll need, including what documentation you’ll need to support your claim and when to let us know about any incident that leads to your claim. But, if you need us, we’re here to help on 1300 36 26 44.

How long do I have to lodge a Cover-More travel insurance claim?

Don’t keep it to yourself – if something goes wrong on your trip, let us know ASAP. All you need to do is fill out an online claim form within 60 days of the return date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Worried you might miss the 60-day deadline because you’re waiting for or missing documentation? Don’t stress – just contact our claims team on 1300 36 26 44 to let them know, and then submit the elements of your claim you do have while you’re waiting.

Got more questions? You’ll find everything you need to know about making a claim here.

How many children are allowed to travel on a Cover-More travel insurance policy?

Bring the whole gang – we don’t care! Actually, we do care – the more, the merrier.

The maximum number of accompanying children on our leisure and business policies is 10, they just have to be your own children or grandchildren and have the same itinerary as you.

Because we like to show you the ‘big print’, all the children must be:

  • travelling with you
  • financially dependent on you and
  • not in full-time employment.

Does Cover-More travel insurance have an age limit?

What do they say, ‘You’re only as old as you feel!’? We think you’re never too old to explore the world. (Well, maybe at 100 you need to pop your feet up…)

We cover travellers up to 99 years old – right up until you get your letter from King Charles III. We value our senior travellers, and you can find out more about our travel insurance cover for seniors here.

Can I buy a Cover-More travel insurance policy if I’m already overseas?

Too busy jumping on your suitcase trying to get the zip closed to buy travel insurance? Don’t worry – you can still buy our Cover-More travel insurance once you’re on the road, but you’ll have to wait three days until your cover kicks into gear, so be good during that time!

The PDS is the font of truth and will explain all – check it out if you want to know more.

Can I edit my Cover-More travel insurance policy after I’ve bought it?

You betcha. You can make changes right up until the trip start date on your Certificate of Insurance, and you can amend details including traveller names, contact details, travel dates, your cover, and more’ (although there are a few details that are unable to be changed – sorry!).

Our Manage My Policy portal is your one-stop shop for making changes to your travel insurance policy. You’ll need to have your Certificate of Insurance and your mobile phone number handy to access it. Our FAQs will help if you need to know more.

Don’t want to change your policy details online? Not able to make the changes you want to online? Call our friendly team on 1300 72 88 22 – they can also help.
