The Paoay Church is a UNESCO World heritage site and one of the popular Ilocos Norte tourist spot

This UNESCO-listed World Heritage site, also called San Augustine Church, is a famous Ilocos Norte tourist spot worth visiting.

The timeless architecture of Paoay Church emphasizes the Baroque style, characterized by its massive 24 buttresses displaying on its sides.

Likewise, its facade’s solid coral rocks and bricks are a testament to the olden construction methodology’s resourcefulness.

On the other hand, the detached bell tower has played an essential part in Ilocos Norte’s history. This three-story structure was used as a watchtower for Katipuneros during the Spanish era and by the Filipino guerrillas during the Japanese occupation of World War II.

Completion of the original building dates back to 1710. After almost three centuries of its existence, NHCP completed the conservation of its exterior in June 2020.

It takes around a 30-minute ride from Laoag City before you reach Paoay. Visiting Paoay Church not only takes you back in time, but it is also a great place to reflect and appreciate history.

2. Paoay Sand Dunes

Spend a fun afternoon riding a 4x4 or sandboarding at Paoay dunes

A trip to Ilocos Norte wouldn’t be complete without taking an adventure at Paoay sand dunes.

Prepare yourself to scream and get dirty by taking some fun yet exhilarating activities like the 4×4 ride, ATV ride, and sandboarding.

Thanks to its rolling hills and steep slopes, Paoay dunes favor an all-out outdoor adventure you can have to your Ilocos Norte tourist spot visit.

Ideally, it is best to visit early in the morning to avoid the heat. Likewise, staying here just before the sunset awaits a scenic landscape to the nearby sea.

3. Bangui Windmills

These massive power-generating towers also plays as Ilocos Norte tourist spot

In the northern part of Ilocos Norte, the Bangui Windmills offer a different sight to behold for every tourist.

The 20 towering 70-m high wind turbines generate a considerable amount of renewable energy to power at least 40% of the province’s demand.

Lining along the Bangui Bay shore, these massive structures create a unique contrast to the sea and mountains nearby.

You can take many photographs as you want or walk along the beach from one windmill to another.

Entrance to this Ilocos Norte tourist spot is free. And when you’re feeling tired but wants to have extra fun, you can also try horseback riding by the shore.

4. Patapat Viaduct

Spend a road trip at Patapat viaduct and take some lovely photos along the way

Another popular Ilocos Norte tourist spot when it comes to scenic structures is the Patapat Viaduct in Pagudpud.

As the fourth longest bridge in the Philippines, the Patapat viaduct has a span of 1.2 kilometers. Moreover, this bridge connects two barangays in Pagudpud, near the border of Ilocos Norte and Cagayan province.

Embracing the mountains’ curves just above the shores of Pasaleng Bay, traversing here offers a picturesque view along the way. Besides, you can also pull over to a broader viaduct section to capture some instagrammble photos.

With the lush greens of the mountains and the navy blue waters of the sea, you’ll surely mesmerize the beauty, even just for a while.

Vehicular traffic may be light here but always practice caution since you will still be on the road.

5. Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

The Kapurpurawan rock formation also catches the attention of tourists with its white canvas-like facade

The coastal views of Ilocos Norte are genuinely unique in most cases. Like in the town of Burgos, you can spot the Kapurpurawan rock formation.

This geological rock formation protruding along the beach keeps tourists in awe because of its white surface.

Its name comes from the Ilocano word puraw, meaning white. Meanwhile, its unique shape and color are the result of weathering and oceanic waves.

Getting close to the rock itself requires some trekking from the drop-off point near the highway. Then you have to walk for a while or ride a horse for a small fee.

The beach here, however, is not suitable for swimming and any other water activities.

Make the most of taking postcard-like photos or marvel at the rough waves coming ashore.

6. Saud Beach in Pagudpud

The definition of a weekend destination in Ilocos Norte is the Saud beach in Pagudpud

For beach lovers, Saud Beach in Pagudpud is the place to be when visiting Ilocos Norte.

Saud beach makes a perfect weekend getaway for locals and nearby provinces, mainly because the crowd is manageable.

Fine creamy-white sands, towering palm trees, and calm sea waters sync perfectly for an unforgettable seascape.

Besides swimming, tourists will also love playing outdoor games on the beach like volleyball, badminton, or frisbee throwing.

7. Malacañang of the North

Explore the Malacañang of the North as part of your Ilocos Norte tourist spot itinerary

When in Paoay, the Malacañang of the North is another Ilocos Norte tourist spot not to miss.

Built as a holiday residence of the Marcos Family, this bi-level house-turned museum has distinguished Spanish architecture.

The noticeable living spaces here are the sizeable living room, the grand staircase, spacious ballroom, and even an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The back is an open veranda overlooking Paoay Lake and manicured lawn to the rest of the property.

Here, you can gaze at the memorabilia of the Marcos family. You can also have a slice of the history of the former first family life who lived here.

The museum is open to the public at a minimal entrance fee.

Tourist who loves seeing olden Philippine houses will surely appreciate this well-preserved historical abode.

8. Paoay Lake

This Ilocos Norte tourist spot is a nice addition when touring Paoay

You can visibly appreciate the Paoay Lake after touring the Malacañang of the North.

Here you can calmly observe this freshwater’s natural beauty or watch migratory birds flock at its banks.

Local legend says the location of Paoay Lake is once a prosperous village that sank after an earthquake. Now, Paoay Lake is one of the natural parks in the region.

Some cafes and restaurants are within the lake’s outskirts, offering a vantage point to watch the sunset.

When feeling adventurous, you can rent a paddleboat or kayak.

9. Sinking Bell Tower

The Sinking Bell Tower in the center of Laoag City

In the heart of Laoag, Ilocos Norte, there is a bell tower that naturally sinks.

The Augustinian friars built it in the 1600s, and it was too late to realize that it sits on a sandy foundation, causing it to sink an inch year by year.

The sinking bell tower is quick to spot near the busy streets of Laoag. Just a few steps from the Laoag Church, this bell tower still rings the bell every Sunday.

Now, stalls have sprung near the tower, obstructing its view. However, you can wait for this Ilocos Norte tourist spot to light up during the night for a dramatic perspective view.

10. Laoag Cathedral

The Laoag Cathedral is the seat of Diocese in ilocos norte

Also known as Saint William’s Cathedral, this church is the Catholic Diocese seat in the region.

Originally built from wood and thatch, today, the Laoag Cathedral displays Italian Renaissance architecture.

Two massive columns are supporting the unusual bi-level facade. The center top is a niche-like recessed portion that displays an image of their patron saint – San Guillermo el Ermitaño.

Masses are offered here in three different languages, which are English, Tagalog, and Ilocano.

Visiting Laoag Cathedral is an excellent addition to your day tour or pilgrimage tour in Ilocos Region.

11. Cape Bojeador

The Cape Bojeador in Burgos has a viewing platform where you can observe the mountains and the sea

Another historical landmark to include in your Ilocos Norte tourist spot itinerary is the Cape Bojeador in Burgos.

The Cape Bojeador dates back to 1892 with its evident brick wall construction. This unassuming lighthouse is still a functional edifice that guides sailors approaching the territories of Ilocos Norte.

The drop-off point is near the national highway, where parking spaces are also available. Then, you may opt to ride a tricycle to take you to the property or walk for around 15 minutes for a quick exercise. Lastly, before reaching the viewing deck, you must take a few steps on a concrete staircase.

The deck’s view offers a unique viewing platform overlooking the ocean from one side and the mountains on the other side.

At a very minimal entrance fee, you can learn more about its construction in the 1890s and how it was challenging during the Luzon earthquake in 1990. You’ll hear some unique stories from the guides for every room too.

Don’t forget to take some lovely photos or ask your local guide for assistance.

12. Juan Luna Shrine

The Juan Luna Shrine is a dedicated museum in honor to the renowned painter of the Philippines

If you are a fan of laid-back and untapped tourist attractions like museums, you may want to add Juan Luna Shrine in Badoc to your Ilocos Norte tourist spot list.

This two-story restored ancestral home is a lifesize work of art itself that showcases contemporary elegance.

Locally available materials like molave woods and clay bricks made up the Juan Luna Shrine. Its ground floor houses the artists’ artworks and memorabilia, while the upper floor shows the living, bedroom, Azotea, and chapel.

Note that the artworks are only reproductions of his original masterpieces, though.

Some artifacts you can also spot represents his brother, General Antonio Luna. These include his sword and uniforms.

Juan Luna is a renowned national artist in the Philippines, and his work of art displays his patriotism and nationalism.

13. Batac Museum

Also called Marcos Museum and Mausoleum, this museum in Batac dedicates to former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Tourists can have a glimpse of some interesting artifacts and memorabilia of his family. The house also served as the old resting place of the late leader.

Batac Museum has no entrance fee, but donations are welcome.

Come and stop by at the Batac Museum if galleries like this interest you.

14. Kabigan Falls

Another Ilocos Norte tourist spot to visit in Pagudpud is the Kabigan Falls. This 87-foot cascade lies in the middle of a tropical forest where tourists can get a chance to commune with nature.

Tourists can expect some 30 minutes of an easy trek through the forest and passing across some streams from the drop-off. After that, you will arrive at the magnificent water body in the middle of the woods.

You can take a dip at the naturally-formed basin. The water could be freezing, though, especially during the wet season.

Where to stay, travel tips, what to read next:.

The easiest way to get to Ilocos is thru Laoag International Airport. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines flies from Manila to Laoag City.

Alternatively, you can also ride a bus to several destinations in Ilocos, including Laoag, Pagudpud, Vigan City, etc.

2 Days Ilocos Itinerary

We know there are already tons of Ilocos itinerary out there, so consider this a new option when you’re planning your Ilocos tour.

From Manila, we took an early-morning flight to Laoag International Airport via Cebu Pacific.

We started early the day at Suba Sand Dunes in Paoay, Ilocos Norte. We rode on a 4×4 ride and explored the sprawling sand dunes, screaming while our driver expertly navigated through curves, sharp turns, and drops. The drops literally felt as though we were freefalling, I kid you not.

Kat in Paoay Sand Dunes

Afterwards, we tried sandboarding. This is an optional activity where you can sled down sandy slopes while having an “I’m the king of the world!” moment.

Next up is the Malacañang of the North, overlooking the Paoay Lake. The 2-storey mansion served as the official residence of the family of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos whenever they were visiting the north. Nowadays, it is open as a museum for those interested in history.

Malacanang of the North

The architecture of the mansion and the hanging portraits of the Marcoses show the family’s love of luxury of opulence.

Nagbacalan Loomweavers

From there, we headed to Nagbacalan Loomweavers , where a local community continues the traditional art of weaving “ abel iloko .” The art of weaving actually pre-dated the Spanish era, with the inabel cloth being used for trade with other countries in Asia, like China.

I’m a huge fan of inabel products. I love the artistry and effort into making each item — whether it’s a towel, a blanket, a bag, or even pieces of clothing. I personally have an inabel hat, a terno, a blanket, and placemats at home. So it was a wonderful experience to see the local weavers themselves.

You can also buy products from the Nagbacalan Loomweavers as souvenir or pasalubong!

For brunch, we headed to Kusina Valentin where we sampled pinakbet pizza while enjoying the view of Paoay Church. Pizza with pinakbet ingredients — you might be thinking it’s an odd combination! It is, but surprisingly it works. You can also drizzle a bit of bagoong isda in the pizza for the full flavor.

Just thinking about it makes me drool! It’s definitely something to try the next time you’re in Paoay.

Kat in Paoay Church

Once we’ve cleaned our plates, we went for a walk and explore Paoay Church. Paoay Church is one of the landmark attractions in Ilocos Norte. Also known as St. Augustine Church, the church is a beautiful Spanish-era architecture and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , along with other baroque churches in the country.

If you love taking pictures, this is one of the best spots in this Ilocos itinerary for IG-worthy snaps.

From Ilocos Norte, we drove to Vigan City about 2 hours away. Vigan City is most famous for Calle Crisologo, a cobblestone street home to a number of Spanish-era ancestral houses, some turned into museums and stores.

It is my second time to explore Calle Crisologo, and thanks to our tour guide Ms. Arlene, I learned something new. Apparently the cobblestones were not there originally but added later on for tourism; the ancestral houses underwent changes, from colorful paints to minimalist white walls.

For late lunch, we stopped at Hidden Garden — a local favorite that serves delicious Ilocano delicacies. After stuffing ourselves with different ulams, we strolled along the gardens filled with different varieties of plants and trees, including a bamboo grove. There was also a “smoking” kawa in one corner that I particularly liked.

The Hidden Garden can be busy, so it’s best to make reservations in advance.

Hidden Garden restaurant in Ilocos Norte

From there, we headed to the Vigan City Museum to learn about the history of Vigan City, its religious roots, and the famous ancestral houses that line its streets. I am particularly awed at the architecture of the old houses, especially how they allow natural airflow in the house — something that modern housing often lacks.

After the museum, we checked in at Hotel Luna . This is a heritage hotel that offers beautiful rooms and suites and an art museum that houses original artwork, notably “La Mandolinera” of Juan Luna. I love this hotel and highly recommend it when you’re staying in Vigan!

Hotel Luna - where to stay in Vigan City

But wait, wait, wait. Even though the comfortable beds at the hotel were beckoning us to sleep the rest of the day away, we couldn’t stay at Vigan City without doing a little exploration.

So we went on a kalesa ride, ate empanada at Irene’s and sampled some of the bugnay wines produced at Ilocos (to be honest, they were pretty good), and then visited the Dancing Fountain at night.

READ : Things to Do in Vigan on Your First Visit

Are you excited for the second day of our Ilocos itinerary? I am, too!

We woke up early morning to take photos at Calle Crisologo. We got outside the hotel at around 6AM. The combination of the early morning light, the empty cobblestone streets, and the shine from the street lamps makes for great pictures! IMO this is the best time to visit Calle Crisologo.

Kat in Calle Crisologo early morning

After breakfast at the hotel, we checked out and then headed to Badoc in Ilocos Norte.

Our first stop was the Minor Basilia of St. John de Baptist (simply known as Badoc Church). Built during the Spanish Colonial Era, the church is now painted in clean white, in contrast to the old-world feel of its belfry.

Badoc Church in Ilocos Norte

The church isn’t just a beautiful spot to stop by, it is also the home of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc , a 400-year-old miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary.

From the church, we walked to Juan and Antonio Luna Museum, a small 2-storey heritage house that pays tribute to the brothers who contributed to the Philippine independence.

Juan Luna was a celebrated artist, known for his painting of “Spoliarium,” while General Antonio Luna served as a leader of the Philippine Revolutionary Army during the early Philippine-American War. The latter’s life was portrayed in the highly rated film (and one of my personal favorites), Heneral Luna.

The Parisian Life in Juan and Antonio Luna Museum

The museum is small but it is an interesting stop in our Ilocos itinerary. You can also listen to a free guided tour to know more about the lives of the Luna brothers.

For an early lunch, we went to the Batac Riverside Empanadaan to visit Glory’s Empanada, owned by Lola Gloria Cocson, the oldest empanada maker in Ilocos Norte.

Lola Gloria of batac empanada

Fun fact : Vigan empanada is different from Batac empanada. The first only contains egg yolk, since the whites are also used for making okoy, while Batac empanada contains the whole egg and also has a more orange coloring due to annatto seeds.

Lola Gloria said the best way to eat empanada is by hand, with iloko suka. I actually prefer it with ketchup than suka, but sshh.

For proper lunch, we headed to La Preciosa in Laoag City. It’s a local restaurant that serves authentic Ilokano dishes. Finally tasted poqui poqui! It is actually pretty good and healthy too.

There were also other dishes like adobong manok sa suka, papaitan, crispy dinuguan, pansit lusay, and more.

La Preciosa restaurant offers Ilokano cuisine

If you’re interested in a home-grown restaurant serving Ilocano cuisine, La Preciosa restaurant should be on your Ilocos itinerary!

Up next, we headed to the town of Bacarra to see one of their well-known attractions: Bacarra Church. Built in 1593, this church (formally known as St. Andrew the Apostle Church ) is one of the oldest churches in the country and is known for its “domeless” bell tower, named for its missing upper layer that was toppled by an earthquake.

Bacarra domeless tower

The Bacarra Church is beautiful and it gets busy especially during the Visita Iglesia.

Just beside the church is the Bacarra Museum, which houses important artifacts and displays that tell the history of the town. It was interesting to see items from my childhood, like the improvised tambourine we used to make with flattened tansan caps. Outside the museum is a flooded underground tunnel, which is connected to the church.

Later in the afternoon, we went to the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, perched atop Vigia de Nagpartian Hill in Burgos. Built in the late 19th century, the lighthouse is now open to tourists for visitation.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

The view of the surrounding coastline from the lighthouse was amazing. We also looked around the small museum and took lots of fun photos. Afterwards, we enjoyed a merienda of dragonfruit bread, shanghai, and ice cream.

Finally, we visited the Burgos Wind Farm . This is one of my favorite places in our 2 days Ilocos tour. The wind farm consists of 50 wind turbines built along the coastline. We came here just in time for sunset, and each side of the hill where we were parked offers amazing views!

Burgos Wind Farm in Ilocos

No words. Just go here, okay?

After our stop at the wind farm, we checked in at Java Hotel in Laoag City. This hotel features beautiful Filipino architecture with a lot of wooden accents. It has beautiful rooms, an alfresco restaurant serving Ilocano cuisine, and a pool.

We had buffet-style dinner, with delicious local cuisine and live music to serenade us.

It’s a shame we only had a night to stay here!

The day after, we left for the Laoag International Airport to get home to Manila.

This was an amazing 2 day tour in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. I’d already been in a multi-day Ilocos tour with my family a few years back, and I was happy to visit here and discover new locations. How did I not know of Burgos Wind Farm before? I liked most of the places we’d visited, and the hotel options were top-notch.

I’d recommend these sights and activities the next time you’re planning a road trip to Ilocos provinces.

There are plenty of accommodation options in these provinces. Here are our suggestions:

Vigan City:

  • Hotel Luna . The first museum hotel in the Philippines, with beautiful rooms and a museum containing original artwork by artists such as Juan Luna. Book discounted rooms here .
  • Hotel Felicidad . A heritage hotel; similar to Hotel Luna, it is just a block away from Calle Crisologo. Book discounted rooms here .

Laoag City:

  • Java Hotel. Book discounted rooms here .

Here are important reminders and tips when visiting Ilocos:

  • Book a tour . It is best to book a packaged tour when exploring Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, due to the distance between its attractions. Our tour was organized by A&A Express Travel & Tours .
  • Pack accordingly . The weather in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur can be hot and humid, especially during the summer months. Pack lightweight and breathable clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
  • When to visit . The best time to visit Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur is during the dry months, from November to April.

Disclaimer : This tour was organized by Department of Tourism – Region 1 and Cebu Pacific. As always, thoughts and opinions are my own.

6. Sinking Bell Tower

Sinking Bell Tower

Within the vicinity of the Laoag Cathedral is the Sinking Bell Tower . As you might have probably guessed, it’s called a sinking bell tower because it actually sinks gradually. Why so? You might be as curious as us. The tower is said to be built on a sandy foundation, which is why it’s sinking every year for about an inch.

At 45 meters high, it is the tallest belfry in the Philippines that withstood the test of time. In fact, it survived a typhoon, earthquake, and fire. We can only wish that preservation efforts will continue so the next generations will still see this architectural wonder.

Fun Fact: Did you know that the Paoay Sand Dunes was the filming location of numerous classic Filipino and international films including Panday (1980), Himala (1982), Mad Max (1979), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989)?

When we set foot here, we really felt like we were in a vast desert in the middle of nowhere that’s not in the Philippines. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind tourist attraction in Ilocos Norte you shouldn’t miss.

Are you trying to decide between visiting Ilocos Sur or Ilocos Norte? Well, why not visit both? Each region is filled with adventures, activities, and attractions to keep you entertained.

We spent about a week in the Ilocos region exploring the most popular tourist attractions including cultural landmarks, sunny beaches, and street food markets. This article will go over some of the top things to do and experience in the Ilocos Region.

Best Things to do in Ilocos Norte

Ride a 4 x4 at the paoay sand dunes.

The Paoay Sand Dunes provides a thrilling adventure in the heart of Ilocos Norte. A licensed driver will pack up to 5 people in the back of a 4×4, and take you on a wild ride through the peaks and drops of the Ilocos sand dunes.

Initially, we wanted to drive our own 4×4, but we are so grateful that we hired a driver instead. He knew all of the best routes to make us hold on for dear life and scream until our lungs gave out. The 30 minutes is packed with 20-foot drops and sharp turns that make you feel as if you barely have tires on the ground. The adrenaline is broken up by a few photo opportunities. One of the best viewpoints overlooks the ocean in one direction and Laoag city in the other.

The 4×4 ride ends with the opportunity to surf down the final sand dune. Our guide allowed us unlimited tries as we all fell and ate sand time after time.

Fun Fact: Scenes from the Hollywood film Mad Max was filmed here.

Water Sports at Pagudpud

Pagudpud, pronounced pah-good-pood , is the northernmost point of Luzon island. Aside from being fun to say (”Pagudpud”…”Pagudpud”. Just try it. See, isn’t that fun?), Pagudpud is also a popular tourist destination known for its beaches and surfing. Local companies like King Fisher Resort offer a number of extreme water sports. This typically includes kite surfing, paddleboarding, and of course surfing. They also have the best Turon I tried while in the Philippines.

Street food at Batac

If you are looking to try authentic Ilocano eats like Longanisa , Ilocano empanadas, and Bagnet , then Batac is the place to go. This city is known to have one of the best public markets in the region. Fun fact: Batac is my lola’s (grandma) hometown!

Visit the Sinking Bell Tower

Like most cathedrals, the St. William’s Cathedral in Laoag City has a bell tower that rings daily calling the community to mass. This bell tower has two things that make it unlike any other. Firstly, it is located about 280 feet away from St. William’s Cathedral, a substantial distance considering bell towers are typically attached to their respective church. Secondly, the bell tower is sinking.

Perhaps due to the fact that it was built on a sandy foundation, the Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag is slowly burying itself into the ground at a rate of one inch a year. When it was built in 1612, the structure towered over the city at a height of 150 feet. It is said that one could enter the bell tower gates on horseback. Today, this main entrance is barely visible above the ground.

The Sinking Bell Tower remains a unique attraction in Ilocos Norte. Visitors are drawn to Laoag each year to see this piece of history before it disappears completely.

Learn about San Agustin Church of Paoay

Like many of the popular landmarks in Ilocos, the San Agustin Church of Paoay was built during the era of Spanish colonization. The adjacent bell tower later served as an observation post during the Philippine revolution against the Spaniards. Years later it was used again by Filipino guerillas during the Japanese occupation of World War II.

The church is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best examples of a Baroque Church in the Philippines. The imposing 24 solid buttresses on each side of the church reinforce its resistance against natural disasters. This has earned it the nickname of the “Earthquake Baroque” church.

Take a picture at the Bangui Wind Farm

The Bangui Wind Farm is one of the more popular tourist attractions in Ilocos Norte. It is one of the largest windmills in Southeast Asia and provides electricity to approximately 50% of the Ilocos Norte region.  Aside from being an environmentally friendly attraction, it is also an ideal location for capturing stunning photos of northern Luzon.

The 20 windmills arc along the shoreline of Bangui Bay creating a backdrop for photography that is both stunning and aesthetically pleasing. The best part? It is easily accessible and there is no fee to visit! In fact, there is no need to leave you car to see these turbines. We were able to view the towering windmills along the main road from Laoag to Pagudpud. However, if you want to capture an incredible photo, we recommend driving to the shoreline.

Try a traditional Ilocano breakfast in Laoag

After a long night of drinking at Java Hotel, our cousin from Laoag recommended Ilocano breakfast as the best cure for any hangover. Never one to turn down a foodie adventure, our whole family crammed into a tiny little breakfast spot in downtown Laoag.

Ladies in hair nets came out placing small dishes on our table. They scooped a distinctly meaty smelling broth into our bowls. This Ilocano staple, Sinanglao, is an incredibly rich broth flavored by various beef innards and bile. After finishing off a bowl, I can attest to my cousin’s statement. The oil and flavors of this rustic soup is indeed a magic tonic for soothing an uneasy tummy.

If you are open to trying new foods that are a bit unconventional (at least to an American palate), make a point to experience a traditional Ilocano breakfast.

Things to do in Ilocos Norte. Traditional Ilocano breakfast in Laoag.

Best things to do in Ilocos Sur

Enjoy a traditional meal and entertainment at pinkabet farms.

Pinakbet Farm is more than a farm, it is a complete cultural experience.  Visitors are treated to a feast served in the traditional Kamayan style, which essentially means eating with hands. While dining on an incredible meal sourced from the onsite farm and river, the staff entertain guests with a cultural presentation. This production blends music and theater to showcase key aspects of Ilocano culture including trade, courting, marriage, and family.

At one point during the presentation, I looked over to find my mom sneaking into the farm. My mom and her sisters have this habit of picking up plant clippings wherever they go to propagate at home. My mom ended up leaving Pinakbet Farm with a nice harvest of peppers, with the owner’s blessing of course.

Pinakbet by the way is an indigenous Ilocano dish consisting of fresh vegetables mixed with shrimp paste. It is derived from the Ilocano word pinakbet which means to shrink the food into one dish to prevent it from spoiling. My mom would make this dish for us growing up. Knowing it was chock full of healthy vegetables I always avoided it. Trying this dish at Pinakbet Farm makes me wish I had given it a shot much sooner!

Visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site

A trip to Ilocos Sur is not complete without visiting Vigan City, rated one of the most amazing places to visit in the Philippines . This 16th-century town is the best-preserved Spanish colonial city in Asia, earning its place on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

What makes Vigan truly unique is that the architecture reflects its distinct cultural heritage. Influences from early Chinese traders and settlers are blended with remnants of Spanish Colonialism. Walking along the cobblestone streets alongside horsedrawn kalesas , is like stepping into another place and time.

There are endless things to do in Vigan City. Visitors can watch the dancing fountain show at Plaza Salcedo, visit museums, and make pottery at the Pagburnayan jar Factory. Perhaps the most popular thing to do when visiting Vigan is to explore the Calle Crisologo. The street has been restored as a pedestrian walkway allowing visitors to explore shops and roadside vendors at their leisure. Do not miss the opportunity to try dirty ice cream from one of Vigan’s street vendors. We recommend Ube (purple yam) flavor!

Where to Stay when visiting Ilocos

We stayed at the beautiful Java Hotel during our week-long adventure of exploring the Ilocos region of Luzon. With its central location in Laoag, it was the perfect home base to explore all of the things to do in both Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. Even though we spent most of our time outside of the hotel exploring, it was nice coming back for a delicious meal at their restaurant followed by an in-room massage. The quality of service, facilities, and amenities are 1 st class. We would not hesitate to recommend Java Hotel for your next visit to Ilocos.

Tribute to Regina Marcos

I am dedicating this article to my aunt Regina Marcos. We had the incredible opportunity to explore the Philippines with 21 of my aunts and cousins. Together we learned about our own Filipino heritage and saw the places where my Lola , mom, aunties, and uncles grew up. This Ilocano portion of the trip was coordinated entirely by my Auntie Oggie.

These pictures and stories will forever remind me of those moments we all spent together in Ilocos laughing, eating, and embracing the loving company of our family.

After our Philippines trip, Auntie Oggie returned to the hospital where she served as a nurse helping patients to battle COVID-19. Having asthma herself she knew the risks of continuing in her line of work. She fiercely pushed on saying,

“I became a nurse to help people. You don’t just stop because you’re afraid.”

On May 23, 2020, she lost her own battle with the disease and joined the angels in heaven. I love you Auntie Oggie!

I know when we did an off road adventure, we too were happy we hired a driver rather than do the drive ourselves. Let us enjoy the ride so much more! It would be good to visit the sinking bell tower before too much of it disappears. We would also want to visit the Vigan City UNESCO site. Love towns that have restored pedestrian walkways!

' src=

Aren’t off-roading adventures so much fun?! We had gone off-roading on an ATV in Mexico , but this was a completely different experience. Like you said, having a driver allowed us to really just let go and have fun.

' src=

I was here five years ago and we road tripped to Vigan City all the way up north to Pagudpud. Lots of beautiful sceneries and photo-ops along the way. Also, Vigan City is one of the action settings of Tom Cruise’s 1989 movie film “Born On The Fourth of July” (in replacement to Mexico and Vietnam).

I didn’t know that! So it looks like we visited 2 Hollywood sets: Paoay Sand Dunes (Mad Max) and Vigan City (Born on the Fourth of July). I’m glad you had the opportunity to explore both Ilocos Sul and Ilocos Norte. There is so much to see and do in that region!

' src=

I like your thinking, visiting them both is clearly the right answer! The sinking bell tower would be at the top of my list. It is very fascinating to me how the earth is swallowing it up. It would be cool to be able to visit every year or every couple years and watch as it sinks deeper and deeper. A meal at the Pinkabet farm sounds delightful. The cultural presentation would itself would be worth the trip. Both places sound lovely.

' src=

I didn’t get to visit these places when I was on a trip to the Philippines. Ilocos Norte and Sul both look so beautiful. I think I’d choose Sul, just to see Vigan. I’ve read many great things about it, and from the photos I can see that it’s true.

Absolutely! Vigan is well worth the trip. The street food, the architecture, the shopping, the history….it is a great place to experience culture and history in the Philippines.

' src=

I am the most intrigued about the bell tower. It looks quite complete except when you mention that the main entrance is well below the ground. I loved all the cathedrals that you have described. Would love to go for that drive too….get that adrenaline shot!

The San Agustin Church of Paoay was just beautiful. Cathedrals and old churches around the world always leave me in amazement.

' src=

I’m sorry for your loss of your Auntie Oggie. But how wonderful that you got to enjoy this trip with your family before she went back to work. You have some wonderful memories to honor her .. travel isn’t just about sights you see and experience, it’s the people along on the journey with you, and the people you meet along the way. What a memorable journey for you all.

Couldn’t agree with you more. I used to do alot of solo travel before Scott and I met, but I find sharing the experience with others especially loved ones, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

' src=

Sounds like you had a wonderful heritage trip with your family, retracing where your grandma, mother, aunts, and uncles used to live. The food look delicious, and the sinking bell intrigue me the most. I’m sorry to hear about your Aunty Oggie. May her soul rest in peace.

It was nice seeing the house and neighborhood where my family grew up. In fact the house is still in the family, so it was particularly special being able to sleep in the room where my mom slept all through college.

' src=

You had me at sand dunes, that sounds like so much fun! The fact that Mad Max was filmed here adds to the experience. It would be fun to check out the sinking bell tower and I always love street food. Pinkabet Farms sounds like a must do excursion and I love that your mom grabbed some plant drippings! Mom’s are good for things like that lol

Haha I only wish I was half as good at gardening as my mom is. She can take any plant stem and make it grow into 5 new plants. One day I’ll get there!

  • PRIVATE CARS & VANS. You can book a van or a private car through your hotel. The average price is P3,500.00 for the whole day, inclusive of a private chauffeur.
  • BUS. Prices vary, although bus owners usually collect a fee between  P25.00-P60.00 per passenger for an ordinary bus depending on the destination and a minimum of P50.00 for air-conditioned buses.
  • Colorful utility vehicles that ply the standard routes. The average fee is P11.00 per kilometer.
  • TRICYCLE. The most common and the easiest way to get around town, especially if short distances are involved. In other Asian countries, trikes are called “tuk-tuk.”  PHP 11.00   is charged for the first kilometer, after which it is negotiable. Higher rates are charged for outer limits. To avoid any misunderstanding, we recommend that you and the driver agree on the fare before embarking on the journey.
  • CALESA. An exciting way to experience Ilocos Norte is to take the Calesa. The minimum charge is P15.00 for the first kilometer.

Rates may change without prior notice .

WHAT TO EAT WHEN IN ILOCOS NORTE

Food forms a significant factor in one’s experience especially if you are visiting the place for the first time. As a traveler, I am not particular about the location or the ambiance, but what I am usually looking for is the authenticity of the taste. Each time I travel, I would want to try something that also tells about the culture of the place.

I have listed below, Ilocano food which I genuinely like.

Long before I visited Ilocos, I have read a lot of articles about Ilocos’ bagnet. I tried this bagnet on my first meal at Ilocos, and I didn’t regret.  The secret of making the Ilocos Bagnet is the slowly deep-frying of pork meat usually in slabs in a low-medium fire. The pork is usually marinated overnight with some natural spices available in the area.

Dinardaran (Crispy Dinuguan)

Another personal favorite that you must try when visiting Ilocos Norte is the Dinardaraan. Dinardaran is the Ilocano term for dinuguan or blood stew.   I don’t know if this is true to all Dinardaran, but what I tried was the version that has crisp in it, which for me is a nice twist considering that it gives the food a different texture. For this dish, they usually use large intestines and a bit of pork loin and pork fat, deep-fried until they are crunchy.

Poqui poqui is a local vegetable Ilocano dish using the eggplant as the main ingredient. Poqui-poqui is a grilled eggplant, peeled, then sauteed with lots of onions, tomatoes, and eggs.

A perfect pair maybe for bagnet is the pinakbet. This vegetable dish uses mainly the ampalaya or bitter melon, eggplant, okra, and string beans. For an added flavor they add some pork and fish sauce.

Perfect as a snack or even as a complete meal. The empanada in Ilocos is one thing which you must try when visiting the Province. The main ingredients for empanada include rice flour for the crust with achuete (for the color); whole egg and mongo sprout or parboiled mongo or grated green papaya for regular orders. Sometimes, Ilocos’ longanisa is added for the filling. Empanada is best when dipped in spicy vinegar.

I was intrigued the first time I saw the tinubong which leads me to try it. Tinubong is a delicacy that is very popular in the entire Ilocos Region. The name of this delicacy is derived from its container, an internode of buho (bulo in Ilocano) with the node at one end, which is called tubong in Ilocano. This native delicacy is made of grounded glutinous rice, sugar, coconut milk, and some coconut meat. These ingredients are being placed in its container (tubong) then steamed. This delicacy can be served as a dessert or as a snack.

Isabel suites

I have stayed in two hotels when I visited Ilocos Norte. I can’t remember anymore the name of the other hotel because I don’t intend to recommend it. It was a 5 story hotel without an elevator, so I’m sure you won’t be happy being there. The first hotel which I stayed overnight and the one I stayed on my last night in my entire Ilocos visit was the Isabel Suites. This hotel has 2 buildings (new and old) facing each other. Located at the heart of the city, Isabel suites offer a nice room at a reasonable price with free wifi. [ Ilocos Norte Tourist Spots + Itinerary, Hotels ]

One must-see place when in Ilocos Norte is the Malacanang of the North. “Malacanang ti Amianan” is the other term used by Ilocanos to describe Malacañang of the North. This is the official residence of the former President Ferdinand Marcos in Ilocos Norte, built on a high point of land projecting into the sea right above the coastline of the legendary Paoay Lake. This wooden Mansion is now a museum and is open to the public. [ Ilocos Norte Tourist Spots + Itinerary, Hotels ]

15 Best VIGAN TOURIST SPOTS (Ilocos Sur)

 alt=

Known for its perfectly-preserved Spanish Colonial architecture and culture, Vigan, Ilocos Sur easily became one of the country’s tourism giants. Inviting millions of tourists not only from different parts of the country but the whole world!

This undeniably charming beauty of Vigan is exactly the reason why it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites , all the more reason for you to visit it! Well, who wouldn’t want to experience traveling back in time, right? Imagine yourself at night walking along the cobblestone streets of Vigan City with rustic mansions and horse-drawn carriages or kalesa around you. And by the streets, you’ll spot local vendors offering some of the best Filipino dishes of all time such as Ilocos Empanada, Bagnet , and more. Ah, what a beautiful experience indeed. Well, I guess it’s your lucky day today because we’ll be exploring the 15 Best Tourist Spots in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, and its nearby provinces!

Are you ready? I sure hope you are because this will be one of the most memorable trips of your life. Let’s go!

1. Calle Crisologo

The first one on the list and probably the ultimate destination in Vigan City is the iconic Calle Crisologo which beautifully embodies the historic Spanish Colonial Era in the Philippines. With streets filled with timeless cobblestones, lines of rustic mansions, tungsten lamps, and horse-drawn carriages or kalesas dwelling on the streets, it will amazingly feel like you’re traveling back to the olden times when our national heroes like Dr. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Apolinario Mabini lived.

Although Calle Crisologo only spans a short 500-meter distance, walking along this historic half-kilometer street will certainly be the highlight of your trip. Well, on top of the fact that Calle Crisologo is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Vigan Ilocos Sur

Oh, and aside from admiring all the breathtaking attractions of Calle Crisologo, it’s also the best time to try out some of Vigan, Ilocos Sur’s finest treats and delicacies. There are lots of souvenir shops and local vendors stationed along Calle Crisologo selling all-time favorite snacks like Ilocos Empanada, Bagnet, and more! If I were you, I wouldn’t miss this chance to buy merienda and lots of pasalubong! CHECK THE BEST HOTELS IN VIGAN HERE

2. Bantay Church Bell Tower

Our next destination is considered one of the most significant historical and religious symbols of Ilocos Sur. The Bantay Church Bell Tower was built in 1591 and was originally intended to be the watchtower of the town of Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

For many centuries, the tower watched over the safety of the people living in Bantay and Vigan. It’s strategically located on top of a hill so soldiers would be able to have a great vantage point over the towns. Well, that also meant that tourists would have a spectacular view of the landscape today! It’s even believed in history that the Bantay Church Bell Tower was the favorite date spot of the famous couple Diego and Gabriela Silang!

Bantay Church Bell Tower

Photo: Wikimedia Commons

Today, Bantay Church Bell Tower serves as the bell tower of Saint Augustine Parish Church, which are noticeably detached from each other. This is because the bell tower was constructed way before the church! Interesting, right? Anyway, make sure to take lots and lots of amazing pictures during your visit here to Bantay Church Bell Tower because it will indeed become one of the highlights of your Vigan adventure.

3. Vigan Cathedral

Another historically and religiously significant attraction in Vigan City is the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle or simply, the Vigan Cathedral. The reason why this cathedral became famous is that it’s a major part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vigan City. Also, it serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, which covers the whole province of Ilocos Sur .

Vigan Cathedral

Tourists, especially pilgrims, make sure that they are able to visit and offer prayers during their Vigan City adventure. The Vigan Cathedral in itself is already a must-see attraction because of the architectural brilliance applied to the structure. It has an Earthquake Baroque style which also beautifully highlights the large buttresses on its side. Don’t forget to take some nice pictures as your remembrance!

4. National Museum of the Philippines | Ilocos Museum Regional Complex

If you’re interested in knowing more about Ilocos province’s rich culture and history, then dropping by the Ilocos Museum Regional Complex in Burgos, Vigan City should be the perfect choice for you. The museum complex is managed by the National Museum of the Philippines so everything is for free, better make the most out of it! There are two (2) major attractions here in the museum complex which are both prominent figures in our country’s national history. And they are both proud Ilokanos! First, is the Burgos Museum which holds the collection of Padre Jose Burgos’ life memorabilia, one of the 3 martyrs GomBurZa priests. Burgos Museum is actually the ancestral house of Padre Burgos so everything you’ll see around the museum were personal belongings and artifacts by the martyr priest himself.

The other one pays tribute to the 6th President of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino. What was once the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail turned into a special exhibit featuring some of President Quirino’s important memorabilia and historical items. Probably one of the highlights of this museum is the spectacular replica of President Quirino’s room featuring some of the actual clothes he wore during his time as president. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting wandering around the Ilocos Museum Regional Complex especially if you’re a certified history buff!

5. Chapel by The Ruins

Ah, there’s really something special about old and vintage buildings that makes us fall in love, right? Well, prepare to fall in love once you reach our next destination, Chapel by The Ruins! This serene and solemn place is actually located beside the Saint Augustine Parish Church, the same church where the famous Bantay Church Bell Tower is stationed.

Vigan is among the oldest cities in the Philippines.

It is most famous for its Heritage Village and the Calle Crisologo street.

This historic centre dates back to the 16th century and it’s the best-preserved example of Spanish architecture in Asia.

Because of the unique blend of the Philippine’s and Spanish architecture, well-preserved Spanish monuments and rich cultural heritage it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The best way to enjoy the village and its cobblestone streets is riding “calesas” horse-drawn carriages or strolling among the beautiful colonial buildings.

Visit it early in the morning when numerous souvenir shops start to open, or in the evening when it gives off the 18th-century vibe.

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

The Dancing Fountain is located right at the centre of the Plaza Salcedo.

There is a show starting every night at 7.30 pm.

It is a perfect place to go and relax after a day spent strolling around.

On the other side of the Plaza, there are sprouting fountains where kids usually play around.

3. Bantay Bell Tower

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

Bantay Bell Tower is the historic belfry of the St Augustine church in Bantay.

It is on a hilltop overlooking the province.

You’ll be greeted by a big old bell and breathtaking views at the top.

The belfry is guarded by a small gate which is locked when there are no visitors.

If you want to make sure you can enter, register at the Tourist Centre along Calle Crisologo at Vigan and ask for a tour in advance.

4. Baluarte Zoo

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

Just 10-minute drive away from Vigan City is the privately owned Baluarte Zoo.

Among caged animals, there are Bengal tigers, pythons, iguanas, camels, deer, as well as ostriches and flamingos.

Visitors can feed monkeys, swans, peacocks, and parrots.

5. Archbishop’s Palace

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

The Archbishop’s Palace is next to the St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Vigan.

It is the only remaining 18th-century palace of this kind in the Philippines.

The residence of Archbishop of Nueva Segovia is in the palace, as well as a museum.

The museum has a collection of religious artefacts and relics from other churches around the region.

6. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

This jar factory is actually one of the few authentic jar makers in Vigan.

The name of this factory, Pagburnayan, refers to the hand-crafted pots.

It’s fascinating to watch how clay is transforming into pots.

The whole process will undoubtedly be interesting to kids, as well as adults.

You will also get the chance to try to make a pot yourself.

Beware, it’s not as easy at it looks.

Also, if you succeed, keep in mind that it will take a couple of days until it’s completely done.

7. Chapel by the Ruins

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

When you go at the back of the St Augustine Church, you’ll find a lovely garden, arranged like an open-air shrine.

It is Chapel by the Ruins, serene, peaceful and an ideal place for thinking or praying.

This garden-like chapel is what’s left of one wing of the St Augustine Church.

Locals claim that this was the place where priests were incarcerated during the 1763 revolt against Spaniards.

However, the ruins have been preserved and converted into the chapel.

8. Hidden Garden

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

Although this place is outside of Vigan, it is still a must-see attraction.

You can get there by car or hiring a tricycle.

There are food stalls and a cafe, surrounded by a beautiful garden.

There is a vast variety of plants, and some of them are for sale.

You can stroll around the area, buy some plants or other souvenirs.

It’s a great place to relax and get a breath of fresh air.

If you decide to eat there, keep in mind that the menu consists of local dishes.

9. Plaza Burgos

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

Plaza Burgos is one of the two major plazas in Vigan.

It was constructed in honour of Father Jose P Burgos.

He was executed with other clergy reformists due to his protests against inequality of Filipino priests.

Plaza Burgos is a local’s favourite hang-out place.

It’s an ideal location if you want to discover their way of life.

On its far end, you can find food stalls with local specialities including empanadas, their favourite snack.

You shouldn’t leave Vigan without trying the empanada in Plaza Burgos.

To make this gastronomic experience unforgettable, try okoy and the local ice-cream.

Around the square, you can also find various souvenir shops and buy other locally made crafts.

10. Santa Maria Church

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

Santa Maria Church is officially known as The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a part of the collection of four Baroque Churches in the Philippines.

In 1769, the picturesque church was built on the top of the hill overlooking the town of Santa Maria.

This massive baroque structure was not just a lookout, but a religious centre of the area as well.

It is also reminiscent of the four centuries of Spanish domination in the area.

However, unlike other churches in the region, it is surrounded by defensive walls like a fortress.

11. National Museum, Magsingal Branch

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

The museum was once a convent for a ruined church.

It was then upgraded to Magsingal Church before being transformed into a museum in 1982.

This is only a branch of the National Museum, and displays the material culture of the Northern Luzon.

You’ll also see a structure for drying tobacco leaves called “pugon”, and concrete wheel for making pottery jars.

It is about 10 kilometres away from Vigan.

12. St Augustine Church

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

St Augustine Church is commonly known as Bantay Church or the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity.

It’s a Roman Catholic church, located in Bantay.

This is one of the oldest churches in Ilocos Sur, established at the end of the 16th century.

At the back of the altar, you can find Virgin Mary crowned by the Pope as the patroness of Ilocandia.

Pilgrims often come to pray to the Lady.

13. Syquia Mansion

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

The Syquia Mansion was a home of the Philippines’ sixth president Elpidio Quirino and his family.

His wife’s family owned the mansion though.

The Syquia Mansion houses the president’s extensive memorabilia, and it is worth a visit.

Some of the historical and political gatherings took place here.

Marvel at huge rooms and look through the peeping holes used to observe visitors in the receiving area, before allowing them to enter the living room.

The mansion itself is another example of a hybrid of Spanish and Philippine’s architecture.

14. St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the major religious landmarks of the Philippines.

The original structure was made in 1574, but it was just a chapel then.

In 1641 the chapel was replaced by the church, but it was finally completed in 1800.

The cathedral was built in Baroque earthquake style, with strengthened thick walls and massive structure against earthquakes.

When you enter the cathedral, you can admire its interior, the silver-panelled main altar, 12 smaller altars and brass communion rails made in China.

You can also see Chinese characters where the rails connect to the building.

The cathedral’s octagonal design is supposedly rooted in feng shui principles.

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is close to Plaza Salcedo and Plaza Burgos.

15. Crisologo Museum

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

The Crisologo Museum is small but houses a lot of memorabilia, and antiques.

If you want to understand the political atmosphere in the Philippines in the ’70s, then this museum is a must.

Floro Crisologo was the congressman who was killed by an unidentified gunman inside the St Paul Cathedral.

To honour him, his family converted their century-old family mansion into a museum.

It gives you the opportunity to peek into the past.

You can see the antique carriage and an old car that are still being used as a movie prop.

Floro Crisologo’s wife survived an assassination attempt in them while being pregnant.

There is also a book collection, news clippings about Crisologo’s death, and even the clothes he wore when he was assassinated, covered in blood.

16. Padre Burgos House – National Museum

ilocos sur and ilocos norte tourist spots

Padre Burgos House is a satellite of the National Museum, and one of the important historic buildings in Vigan.

As a young priest, Father or Padre Burgos fought for the equal rights for Philippine’s clergy.

However, he was executed by the Spanish in 1872 with two other martyr priests.

Father Burgos house is actually the old two-story house where he was born.

It is close to the St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, and it houses an extensive collection of his memorabilia, including photographs, old books and family antiques.

You can also enjoy the series of 14 paintings by Esteban Villanueva of the 1807 Basi Revolt.

Ilocos Sur is a region full of exciting attractions.

It’s like a door to the past, from cobblestone streets to factories that celebrate pottery making.

Historic buildings and an architectural blend of cultural elements from the Philippines and Spain will leave you speechless.

Take your time, and get to know Ilocos Sur, and don’t forget to buy some souvenirs.

Must-see Tourist Spots in Ilocos Norte!

As the first Philippine province I have visited, Ilocos Norte never fails to amuse me. “There’s no place like home!”

Home sweet home! Yehey! Good day! Live the life! Guides soon on the blog! Turista Boy / www.turistaboy.com #Ilokanoak #TuristaBoy #WhenInLaoag A photo posted by Aldrick 'chiki' Zabala Agpaoa (@chikinensis) on Mar 23, 2016 at 4:50pm PDT

The province of Ilocos Norte is truly unexpected – you get to see new and surprising tourist attractions and feel new experiences along the way! There is still much to see, you just have to discover and promote it, not to mention, we should be Responsible Travelers, too.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————

This part of the blog is dedicated to having a (more or less) detailed look at the more popular tourist spots in these provinces that I and my friends visited this year (plus other attractions I have been before, too.)

All about Ilocos Norte

Out of the 21 municipalities and 2 cities of Ilocos Norte, I have been to 10 of them and every municipality and city have something different to offer. If you happen to visit these tourist attractions, too, you will see flags of Ilocos Norte with a mustache above it. The mustache idea came from Juan Luna , a famous and world-renowned Ilocano painter who is the brother of General Antonio Luna who had the same and who are both natives of Badoc .

Welcome to Ilocos Norte!

Welcome to Ilocos Norte!

The mustache first became the signature symbol of Paoay for their “ Paoay Kumakaway ” Tourism Campaign until it became the province’s tourism symbol eventually. So every time you see colorful flags printed with “ Ilocos Norte ” and a mustache above it, it probably means you’re in a tourist attraction!

Approximately 504 Kilometers away from Manila and 295 Kilometers away from Baguio , Ilocandia is really worth the distance (and worth the wait from that long trip!)

( I would be discussing Ilocos Norte first and then will include Ilocos Sur on the latter part of this blog! )

When arriving in Ilocos Norte, almost all of the bus terminals are located near the Central Business District of Laoag so it is a walk or tricycle ride away from the Provincial Capitol and other tourist spots in Laoag . What’s good when you are in Laoag is that almost all of the tourist attractions are near with each other.

(These places are grouped according to each other’s proximity)

Fort Ilocandia

The Fort Ilocandia Façade - Ilocos Norte

The Fort Ilocandia Façade

Welcome to The Fort - Ilocos Norte

Welcome to The Fort!

Fort Ilocandia is the premier resort and casino in Ilocos Norte. It is then the favorite vacation spot (until now) of most expatriates especially when they arrive at the Laoag International Airport . Found in the westernmost part of the city, the 77-hectare “Fort” is more than just a resort that anyone can enjoy – plus its 2-Kilometer share of the Ilocos shoreline! In its main building, made mostly of bricks and concrete (an Ilocano signature in architecture), are several pictures of the Marcos family and the resorts’ milestones as well.

The Fort has truly preserved what is truly Ilocano – from the ambiance, the hospitality, and the people.

La Paz Sand Dunes - Ilocos Norte

La Paz Sand Dunes Registration Area

Our friend, who is a local of Laoag, too, recommended that we experience the La Paz Sand Dunes instead from that of Paoay’s. Being the location of the first installment of the movie “MadMax,” I could say that the terrain is more rugged (which is more fun when riding a 4×4) and that the course is much longer. Our driver-guide actually extended our ride for an hour, as the actual ride only lasts for about 30 minutes or so. The site, too, has been declared as a  National Geological Monument by the National Committee on Geological Sciences in 1993. It is also the location of some popular Filipino movies like “Panday” and “Himala,” to name a few. 🙂

4x4-ing - Ilocos Norte

Sandboarding (with finesse!) Hahaha!

The package for the sand dunes is PhP 2500.00. So it is better to go there in groups. (We were 5 when we went there). It includes the 4×4 ride with 2 to 3 stopovers for picture-taking and the unlimited sand-boarding after. It is better if you go there in the late afternoon so that the sun’s heat will not be that harmful, plus you can get to see the sun set on the West Philippine Sea.

If you want to maximize the fun, you can contact our driver-guide, Kuya Joel Wilford at +63 948 502 6591. You can also have photo souvenirs at their registration booth for PhP 150.00 per picture.

Ilocos Norte Capitol

The Ilocos Norte Provincial Capitol at Night ( Photo by Jam Dario )

Personally, it is one of the most-appealing provincial capitols I have been to so far. (Wait ‘til I get to see Negros Occidental’s Capitol, which is argued to be the most beautiful provincial capitol in the Philippines.) It is because the capitol can be seen right past the Tobacco Monopoly Monument where the giant letters of L-A-O-A-G are after passing the Gilbert Bridge .

It is also where you will find the giant letters of “Ilocos Norte” – a picture-perfect spot for tourists and locals alike. The capitol is more beautiful when it is lighted up in the evening. It is also near the Laoag City Hall and Baratilyo Food stalls where you can enjoy the famous Ilocano food “ empanada ” and longganisa alongside other staple street foods.

Tobacco Monopoly Monument

Commemorating what has been one of the most historic revolts in the country, the Tobacco Monopoly Monument – which is situated within the confines of Aurora Park – remembers the sacrifices of their forefathers in fighting for freedom, especially in the monopolization of Tobacco in the region. This is the very first tourist spot you will get to see when arriving in Laoag. It is also just right across the Provincial Capitol and adjacent to the City Hall of Laoag.

Laoag Public Market

Laoag Central Public Market - Ilocos Norte

Laoag Central Public Market ( Photo by www.singlewomantravel.wordpress.com )

It is the capital’s main source of seafood and other Ilocano foods such as Pasuquin’s Biscocho and Paoay’s Cornick, among others. It is also a perfect haven for empanada vendors, too, as their stalls scattered around the market’s vicinity. It is also the loading and unloading area for tricycle drivers and calesa drivers (at only PhP 50.00 per ride within the city)!

St. William’s Cathedral

St. William's Cathedral's Façade - Ilocos Norte

St. William’s Cathedral’s Façade

St. William’s Cathedral, also known as the Laoag Cathedral is the seat of faith in the City. (FYI, St. William is the Patron Saint of Laoag City) Established in 1580, the church has been the refuge of many Christians since the late 16th century.

Sinking Bell tower

As the name implies, the bell tower of St. William’s Cathedral sinks at a rate of approximately 1 centimeter every year. Due to its massive Earthquake Baroque-style structure, and as it is situated over a soft foundation, the bell tower gained such reputation, hence the name.

It is also found a few meters away from the cathedral because, in the early times, this was the style in building the bell towers of churches, some of it, too, are used as watchtowers during wars. Legend has it that a man sitting on a tall horse can freely enter the bell tower’s door. Now, you have to bow down in order to enter (although they have closed the entrance to the public because it is immediately adjacent a major city road.)

Malacañang of the North

"<yoastmark

Malacañang ti Amianan in the Ilocano dialect, this is the former home of the Marcoses during President Ferdinand E. Marcos ’ incumbency. Today, the house is now a museum with all the memorabilia of the former first family with all furniture intact. A minimum entrance fee of PhP 30.00 is charged before entering. The house-turned-museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 0900 H – 1600 H. It is closed on Mondays. The site can be reached via tricycle with a minimum fare of PhP 15-20.

Iglesia de San Agustin de Paoay (Paoay Church)

Iglesia de San Agustin de Paoay - Ilocos Norte

Iglesia de San Agustin de Paoay (circa 1593)

As only one of the four Spanish Colonial Earthquake Baroque-style churches enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Paoay Church became an instant signature tourist spot in the municipality of Paoay . Its construction began in the late 17 th century dedicated to Saint Augustine.

Its distinctively-designed buttresses add to the overall appeal of the church’s façade.

Nana Rosa’s Chichacorn

Nana Rosa's - Ilocos Norte

Nana Rosa’s!

Nana Rosa’s Chichacorn , I can say, is the best chichacorn that can be found in Paoay! With many flavors to choose from, its crunchiness is one of a kind. It is also cheaper if you buy their products at their main factory in Paoay. It is one of the famous brands of chichacorn in Ilocos.

Peculiar to some (and interesting to me), Café Herencia, dubbed as the “Edible Landmark of Ilocos Norte,” is believed and is known to be the home of the original Pinakbet Pizza. Pinakbet is a known Ilocano dish that is a mix of different vegetables cooked in bagoong (fish paste). Here, the ingredients of pinakbet are laid over the pizza dough, baked, then poured with bagoong as its sauce. Yum! It’s definitely a must-try when visiting Paoay. They also have a restaurant in Laoag City. For more information, contact them at +63 77 614 0214.

The City of Batac is dubbed as the “Home of Great Leaders” because some of the country’s illustrious sons come from this City. To name a few, Gregorio Aglipay , Sen. Rodolfo Biazon , Mariano Marcos ( Ferdinand Marcos ’ father), and Artemio Ricarte (The Father of the Philippine Army ) came from this Municipality-turned-City.

Opened in 1993, this museum is where you will get to see a large number of memorabilia of President Marcos – from his office setup to his personal things, as dedicated in the Ferdinand Marcos Presidential Center. It is also where you will find the celebrated mausoleum of the 20-year dictator. The Presidential Center is open from 0900 H – 1630 H daily and is located in Barangay 10 N Lacub, Batac City, Ilocos Norte.

TuristaBoy Tip :

Cameras not allowed inside Marcos Mausoleum - Ilocos Norte

Picture-taking inside the mausoleum is strictly prohibited. It is also watched over by guards so might as well keep those cameras before entering. The body inside the glass is just a wax figure of the past President and rumor has it that his real coffin is just below it!

Santa Monica Church and Casa del Palacio Real (convent beside Church)

Believed to be the largest (and the longest) brick church in the entire province of Ilocos Norte, the Santa Monica Church is also rich in history. It was built in 1779 and was first known as San Miguel Church. Around the church’s vicinity also are the 14 Stations of the Cross made from brick. The convent beside it once served as the town’s municipal hall and it also once housed the Colegio de Santa Monica, an affiliate of Lyceo de Manila.

In recent history, the National Museum of the Philippines declared the Church as an “ Important Cultural Property ” in 2009. Also, if you have watched the movie “Heneral Luna,” a portion of the movie was taped here!

Sarrat Centro

Some of the tourist attractions in Sarrat’s Centro are: Rizal Monument, Fabian Ver House / Villa Ver, Scout Albano Monument, Rit-ritemon Cayong Monument, Vistuario de Sarrat, and newest addition is the Ferdinand Marcos Monument.

Madongan Dam

The Madongan River Diversion Dam in the Municipality of Dingras is now one of the newest and up-and-coming tourist destinations in Ilocos Norte (located in San Marcelino, Dingras). Although one of the drying dams in the North, the dam’s natural charm captured the people’s wanderlust to try and discover this destination. I can relate the drying dam’s setup to that of Villa Escudero ’s man-made falls.

The dam, though, is disputed by the Municipalities of Marcos and Dingras which results in the collection of different rental rates in the vicinity. Rental rates of cottages vary from PhP 200-500 (for a day’s stay) and PhP 500-700 (for an overnight stay). Minimal entrance fees are also collected at PhP 10 each and parking fees at PhP 20-50.

As of writing, there are no firm information if there is a public transportation system into and from the area. So for now, it is better if you have a private vehicle with you. The dam is also 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours away from Laoag City. For more information, click HERE !

Although far from the tourist’s eye, the Nueva Era Eco Park should never be missed. Located in maybe one of the farthest municipalities of Ilocos Norte, the Nueva Era Eco Park has a number of attractions to offer its visitors, too. From their swimming pools, their souvenir shops, museum, dining areas, cottages, and a hanging bridge to name a few, This Eco Park will bring you closer to nature. Opened on January 8, 2014, The Eco Park also features villas of the indigenous Tingguian tribe living in the Municipality. After over 100 years, it still functions as a welcoming beacon to international ships entering the archipelago.
