First Booking

We want to try a vacation by rail and did a google search and up came Vacations By Rail. We have not taken the trip yet; however, have it booked. Initially called their booking number which resulted in 5-Star customer service. I then went to VBR website and booked the trip and found their site very easy to navigate. Our trip is September of 2025 and will follow-up with comments following the trip. I assume we will have the same 5-Star Service throughout the trip based upon my initial interactions with VBR.

Instead of booking online, call & use an agent!

Instead of booking online I chose to call. The call was answered fairly promptly for which I am always grateful. The agent was professional and knowledgeable. He completely understood what we want to do and when and helped by arranging the precise trip we want.

Very impressed with the professionalism courtesy given to create our booking. Thomas went out of his way to ensure everything was clearly understood . Very impressed. Many thanks.

Making Life A Little Easier ...

I have recently booked a trip to Canada with Vacations By Rail and was delighted with the level of service I received. No query was too small, no extra too difficult to arrange and every email was answered by return. Thank you, Bridget, for your kind and courteous help throughout the process, I am very much looking forward to my trip, would be very likely to use their services again and will happily recommend the company.

Switzerland 2025

This is our second time booking with this company. We enjoyed our Scotland Tour in 2023. We are looking forward to Switzerland in 2025. Was hoping for a little better response time on the customizing request we had for our Switzerland trip.

Date of experience : September 20, 2024

Extremely Poor communication and management of the trip

Failed to get our contact information correct after multiple calls. Gave inaccurate information on more than one occasion leading us to pay more money get from airport to hotel when the rest of the group was provided transportation to hotel. When we met the group in Canada they were all from Great Britain as was our travel group leader who was also angry that she had not been able to reach us due to inaccurate information provided by VBR. Also could not participate in one of the activities because we had never received info so did not buy the tickets! Wrote to VBR twice and was told someone would get back to us but never heard back.

Date of experience : May 29, 2024

This was from a call only. No trip yet. Keep that in mind.

I wanted to take a train trip, but didn't know where to start. He was very patient with me and answered all my questions. Because of his answers, I felt confident to schedule another trip on my own. Both trips have yet to be taken, so we will see.

Amazing Switzerland by rail

Our tour was Aug.26 thru Sept 3, 2024.Our tour manager Philip Orbell was knowledgeable, personable, prompt with attention to details. Our entire journey was fun and wonderful. Vacation by rail delivered excellent services. Hotels proximity to rail station were easy to walk. the quality of hotels we stayed were great. The entire experienced was incredible. Switzerland was beautiful. Philip thank you for being w/ 32 travelers, hope to see you in our future travels.

So disappointed

So disappointed. Communication was awful.   “Small group excursions” of six to eight passengers turned out to be 30 plus people on huge diesel spewing buses. Transfer was cancelled with no warning. We paid almost $180 per night extra ($1800 total) for ten nights upgraded hotel rooms; none of the upgrades happened. VBR blames the Spanish vendors, the Spanish vendors blame VBR.  We’ve taken two other recent trips with VBR to Alaska and Italy that were great. They really failed on this one.

Great customer service and support for my particular needs. Agent was super informative and answered all my questions patiently.

Amazing Service

As we were trying to liaise with a company based in Britain it was very difficult to find overlapping hours during the day when we could speak with one another, as we are in Australia. Thomas from Vacations by Rail was amazing. He would phone us before he went home so that we could speak with him around 6.00 am in the morning. He organised our tour, gave us advice, sent us emails to confirm what we had been discussing and was extremely efficient.

Easy to book and quick response

Easy to book and quick response. Very detailed welcome pack.

Sale price honored

I called late in the day - CDT - on the last day of a sale. Carina explained that, as the company was based in London, the website showed the offer as expired but that she (in Chicago) would honor the sale price and extend it to me in the form of a sale reduction on a forthcoming quote, which she did. I was quite pleased and also liked her input/comments as an int'l. traveler.

The 11 Best Canadian Train Trips

Canada is second only to Russia when it comes to land mass, which means seeing the country's vast wilderness can be overwhelming. Luckily, Canadian train trips criss-cross most of it, and these rail journeys allow you to take in some of the world's most spectacular scenery, stress-free. Just imagine: the nation's vistas unfolding before you slowly (or swiftly, depending on your chariot) while you remain in the comfort of your seat. On top of that, some of the Canada's most remote—and beautiful—spots lack road access, so a train ride may also be the only way to visit. All the more reason to climb on board .

Read on to learn more about 11 of the most beautiful Canadian train trips you can take across the Great White North, as well as some recommendations for where to stay at the beginning or at the end of your railroad adventure. (And for more fabulous train rides, check out the results of Condé Nast Traveler 's Readers' Choice Awards 2023 to see which trains our readers voted the best in the world .)

Via Rail passenger train travelling through Rocky Mountains British Columbia Canada.

Via Rail’s Winnipeg to Churchill

This 1,054-mile trip north feels more interplanetary than provincial, whisking you from urban Winnipeg to the tundras of Churchill , known as the polar bear capital of the world. Accessible by plane or train only, it’s also prime turf for beluga whale-watching , and possibly the world’s best perch to view the northern lights. Landscapes en route are breathtaking, with stops including tiny river towns The Pas, Thompson, and Weir River. Splurge on Via’s Sleeper Plus class for access to a bed and shower.

Where to stay: In Winnipeg, check into the impressive and century-old Fort Garry Hotel , a prime example of twentieth-century châteauesque architecture, including prominent cornices and a steep sloping copper roof. In case you needed a bit more of that old-world feel to your trip.

View of cattle grazing in front of Rocky Mountains from Foothills near Cochrane Alberta Canada

Ontario Northland’s Polar Bear Express, Cochrane to Moosonee

Ontario is larger than France and Spain combined, but most visitors stick to its big southern cities. Embarking from tiny Cochrane—nearly 500 miles north of Toronto —the Polar Bear Express chugs five hours further north to Moosonee, so remote it lacks road access. The route mimics a path fur traders favored centuries ago, through a primeval landscape of thick forests and winding rivers. Note that reaching Cochrane involves a flight to northeastern Timmins and an overnight bus ride.

Where to stay: Break up your adventure with a night at Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa in Timmins, Ontario. The place is all about rural and cozy vibes, letting you bask in the natural beauty of nearby Gillies Lake Park and Hollinger Park.

Agawa Canyon Tour Train Ontario

Agawa Canyon Tour Train, Ontario

It’s only accessible by trail or rail, which makes Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park near Sault Sainte-Marie such a thrill to visit. Hop on and off this 90-minute ride as you pass four dramatic waterfalls and a trail system that overflows with pristine natural beauty. Bonus: Beavers, the most Canadian of critters, traipse through here frequently.

Where to stay: Since this tour train takes just an hour and a half, you'll need a place to rest your head in Sault Sainte-Marie before continuing your journey. Luckily, the Delta Hotels by Marriott Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront is near the station, and offers cool views of Saint Mary's River and the United States beyond.

Canadian Rockies

Royal Canadian Rockies Experience, Banff to Calgary, Alberta

Canada’s glitziest train ride is also one of its most cinematic, passing through splendid Banff and Lake Louise, along with jaw-dropping sights like Alberta’s Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a World Heritage Site where Indigenous people hunted ruminants by enticing them to leap off a cliff. Still eager to see more? At the end of the line, you can book a helicopter trip over the Rockies for a bird's eye view.

Where to stay: In Banff, you shouldn't miss the Fairmont Banff Springs . This Scottish Baronial fortress grants you a million-dollar view of those majestic snow-dusted mountain tops, which makes the moniker “the Castle in the Rockies” all the more fitting.

Via Rail’s The Canadian, Toronto to Vancouver

A single train journey can’t capture Canada’s magnificence, but this four-night/three-day adventure from Toronto to Vancouver comes close. You’ll take in prairies, lakes, peaks, valleys, hamlets, waterfalls, and, if you’re lucky, cameos by local wildlife like deer, elk, and bears. If you can, book a seat in Prestige Class—think concierge, superb meals, private lounges—for one of the most comfortable train trips you’ll ever take.

Where to stay: Once you're in Vancouver, keep the plush and casually fabulous energy going with a night or two at the dreamy Shangri-La Vancouver , where those who appreciate the subtleties of luxury travel won't be disappointed.

White Pass and Yukon Route, Yukon

Even today, building a railway through the mountains, glaciers, and gorges of Gold Rush country remains an impressive feat, let alone in 1898, when this route was first built. Survey views of the Yukon, BC, and Alaska , as your train rises a gut-churning 3,000 feet in just 20 miles to the summit of White Pass. Touring such treacherous terrain will leave you appreciating how the railway helped knit a nascent Canada together.

Where to stay: There aren't many hotel options in Skagway, Alaska, where this train journey begins. That said, there are a handful of cruises that call at this Alaskan port town, including options aboard Celebrity Cruises , so you can make this a two-for-one adventure.

If theres one Canadian train ride that should make your bucket list its the journey on the Rocky Mountaineer from...

Rocky Mountaineer's First Passage to the West, Western Canada

If there’s one Canadian train ride that should make your bucket list, it’s the journey on the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff . The whole ride is scenic, offering glimpses into the Great White North’s wildlife as well as its important Indigenous history. Thoughtful guides and storytellers onboard talk you through the locales and vistas from the comfort of your plush leather seats underneath the train cars’ glass-domed roofs. Meals here are delicious too, no matter which class of service you’re in, whether it’s SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf (though the latter’s linen-covered tables are a classy touch).

Where to stay: The Rocky Mountaineer is often spoken about in the same breath as other famous luxury train rides across the world: the Orient Express , Seven Stars Kyushu , or the Royal Scotsman . But unlike those, this isn’t a sleeper train. It travels exclusively by daylight, making the most of the scenery. At night, guests check into a hotel along the route—so your comfort throughout the journey is assured.

Train de Charlevoix, Quebec

Inaugurated in 1889, when it connected Quebec City to remote Charlevoix, this train line cruises along a glorious section of St. Lawrence coastline. Much of the scenery en route seems unchanged a century and a half later, with the mighty river on one side and lush landscapes on the other. Stops include enchanting coastal villages like Baie-St-Paul; consider splitting the journey over two days to explore. The route runs June through October.

Where to stay: Before you climb onboard the train in Quebec City, prep for your journey in old Basse-Ville (meaning “lower city”) at the boutique hotel Monsieur Jean , which offers bright and breezy digs melded with friendly Quebecois hospitality.

Via Rail, Jasper, Alberta to Prince Rupert, BC

The windows-only Dome Car on this nature-filled route offers 360-degree views of the regal Canadian Rockies. During the seven-hour train ride, you’ll also get an ocean’s worth of lakes, including beautiful Yellowhead, Lucerne, and Moose. Have more time? The train heads to coastal Prince Rupert the next morning, where whale-watching and grizzly-bear-viewing are highlights. Bonus: At the Alberta-British Columbia border, the train crosses the Continental Divide.

Where to stay: Once you're on Kaien Island and the train pulls into the port city of Prince Rupert, head for the Crest Hotel , where you can wake up to beautiful waterfront views of—what else?—Prince Rupert Harbour.

Rocky Mountaineer's Journey Through the Clouds, British Columbia and Alberta

The Canadian Rockies’ tallest peak, majestic Mount Robson, is the star of this ten-day journey from Vancouver to Calgary. But it’s hard to pick a highlight when your trip spans sights like British Columbia’s astonishing Hell’s Gate—twice the width of Niagara Falls—and Moose Lake, home to plenty of its namesake. You’ll also get a glimpse of the gargantuan Albreda Glacier, a landscape dating back eons.

Where to stay: When in Canada, you can't go wrong with a Fairmont, and the Fairmont Palliser in Calgary is a true beaut. Plus, it's sandwiched between the city's downtown and the Calgary Design District, so you'll have plenty of sightseeing options when you get off the train.

Via Rail’s The Ocean, Montreal to Halifax

Climbing north into remotest Quebec and east into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, this aptly-named, 836-mile trip lets the wide-open spaces and clear-blue waters unfold like aqua-tinted postcards. Bonus: The Ocean is the oldest continuously running named passenger train in North America, rolling along since 1904.

Where to stay: In Montreal you've got the pick of the litter, but the stately yet modern Hotel Birks Montreal and the classically luxurious Four Seasons Montreal take the cake. Meanwhile, in Halifax, you've got the super sleek Muir, Autograph Collection in the downtown waterfront area, and the richly cozy The Pebble Bed & Breakfast in the South End for an inn-in-the-city experience.

8 great rail journeys to take across the USA

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely sightseeing experience.© Alex Potemkin/Getty Images

There’s no getting around the sheer size and scale of the USA – it’s an absolute, supersized whopper – and the best way to see it all is via train.

The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely, nostalgic sightseeing experience, often passing through pristine landscapes inaccessible by other means. The US is rich with amazing train journeys, but the routes listed below are the cream of the crop. From California to New England , here are eight epic US train trips our editors have selected, taken from Lonely Planet's Amazing Train Journeys .

A white male passenger takes in the New Mexico desert landscape at sunset from the Amtrak train.

1. The Sunset Limited

Route: New Orleans – San Antonio – Tucson – Phoenix – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1995 miles (3211 km); 2 days

Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.

Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight Train passes along a track through hilly terrain en route to Los Angeles

2. The Coast Starlight

Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours

Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.

It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m) Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.

A train coming into a station in an idyllic leafy setting

3. Metro-North Hudson Line

Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours

Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.

Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. The names of the stops along the way speak to the area’s origins: Native American (Ossining, Poughkeepsie); Dutch (Spuyten Duyvil, Yonkers, Cortlandt, Peekskill); English (Hastings-on-Hudson, Scarborough). It’s a land so famously beautiful an entire art movement – the Hudson River School – was once dedicated to capturing its glory. For the cost of a burger and a beer, this view can be yours for almost two hours.

A train passing through a green landscape with blue skies

4. The California Zephyr

Route: Chicago – Omaha – Denver – Salt Lake City – San Francisco Distance and duration: 2438 miles (3924km), 51 hours 20 minutes

For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak’s California Zephyr train. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.

Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.

The northbound Amtrak Downeaster at the train station in Brunswick as seen from the front

5. Amtrak Downeaster

Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes

As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.

Even better, every stop on the Amtrak Downeaster features historic New England cities and towns, parks and seascapes, cottage arts and crafts, world-class shopping and stellar foods fashioned from farm-and-sea-fresh ingredients.

A locomotive decorated with the image of the road runner

6. The New Mexico Rail Runner

Route: Albuquerque – Santa Fe Distance and duration: 97 miles (156 km); 90 minutes

One of America’s great unsung commuter railways, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a regional train that runs down the Rio Grande Valley , connecting the state’s largest city, Albuquerque, with its cultural and political capital, Santa Fe.

On the way it crosses the wide, high desert, giving views of arid mountains in all directions, and even passes through several of the state’s Native American tribal lands. A no-nonsense, clean and quick journey, its highlights are the sweeping views from the upper seats of the double-decker carriages. Taken as a day trip or a scenic but practical form of intra-state transport, the Rail Runner is a wonderful introduction to New Mexico ’s epic landscapes.

Empire Builder AMTRAK passenger train rolls into Whitefish, Montana, USA

7. The Empire Builder

Route: Chicago – St Paul or Minneapolis – Spokane – Portland or Seattle Distance and duration: 2764 miles (4448 km); 46 hours

The Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle glides through Wisconsin 's woodlands, Minnesota's lake country and the North Dakota prairies en route to a western horizon swarming with snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks. From Browning , Montana, an unforgettable 60-mile run along the southern edge of Glacier National Park leads to the park entrance at West Glacier, where nature lovers will want to break their journey before continuing to Seattle.

The Jefferson Memorial at sunset seen through some trees during the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC

8. The Vermonter

Route: Washington, DC – New York City– Springfield – Essex Junction ( Burlington ) – St Albans Distance and duration: 611 miles (983 km); 13 hours 45 minutes

The Amtrak Vermonter runs once daily from Washington, DC to St Albans, VT. This is the most scenic route east of the Mississippi, especially in its northern reaches, where it snakes for four hours through the bucolic green hills and photogenic villages of rural Vermont.

Starting from the nation's capital, Washington, DC, the train runs north through one of the USA's greatest metropolises, New York City, before bowling out through Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route to the bucolic Vermont countryside and St Albans.

Good Housekeeping’s Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab executive director, Lexi Sachs boarded the train with her family for a trip to Orlando, which she described as “just as fun of an experience for my two kids” as their trip to Disney World.

Sachs also pointed out that the train trip featured a range of seating options, from coach to bedrooms with pull down beds, lovely views of the East Coast, delicious dinner and breakfast, and allowed her to feel like she wasn’t losing a day of vacation due to travel. Plus, Amtrak offers priority offloading, “which means your car comes off first,” Sachs said, adding that “It was definitely worth it in my opinion!”

VIA Rail “The Canadian” Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

rail travel tours reviews

Travelling across Canada by train has long been on my bucket list. What better way to experience just how big and diverse my home country is than slowly by train? This experience, although affordable in economy class, is not cheap if you want any sort of comfort. This made me sceptical that my  Canadian  train review would ever leave the station.

This scepticism was squashed with Canada’s 150th birthday and me wanting to cover as much of the country as possible. With VIA Rail being the only option to travel the country by train, I pulled the trigger. This is my Canadian train review.

Table of Contents

What is The Canadian Train?

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

Disclaimer:   I feel with any review where I have any sort of negative experience I should point out that it is usually because I hold the service to a higher standard, usually due to cost or similar services I have reviewed. This was the case with my Canadian Train review. Also note, my VIA rail Canadian train review is not the result of sponsorship with VIA. To support my site please consider booking your VIA Rail Canadian train tickets through my affiliate links.

10 Things VIA Rail Doesn’t Tell You About “The Canadian”

Connecting a Country

The Canadian  train is an appropriate name given that it covers the country on the very rail line that united it in the first place. To get the western province on board with joining Canada, the railroad was key to convincing them. It took 10+ years to survey and, impressively, only four years to complete.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

In the end, the 4,500 KM’s of track connects Ontario to British Columbia and crosses 5 provinces, 670 bridges, and travels through dozens of tunnels and mountain passes along the way.

In 1885 the railroad was finished and began a new era for a new country. To aid in settling the west and the vast new country, the Canadian government gave away land to new settlers. The rail line was key in bringing people from the piers of Halifax to the Prairies.

Once settled, the rail remained a vital lifeline, connecting these new settlements with the world. Today that lifeline is still intact for many small communities along the way. This was evident for me with seemingly middle-of-nowhere stops where everything from snowmobiles to coffins were loaded and unloaded.

What Types of Service Is There on The Canadian Train?

Tickets on The Canadian range from Economy to Sleeper Plus to Prestige Class . The prices vary wildly in between.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

During my trip, VIA Rail was offering a promotion for unlimited train travel in economy to students for just $150 dollars. The first-class offering in Prestige Class costs $4,000+ and that is just a one-way ticket. The latter does include all your meals, drinks, access to the Park Car, and a comfortable room with a private bath but that is one helluva gap $$$ wise.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

Sleeper Plus

I opted for a lower berth in Sleeper Plus , the middle-of-the-road service, for a few reasons:

  • At ~$1,200 it was $1,000(!) cheaper than a private cabin.
  • It includes all meals.
  • It includes access to showers, to the Panorama Car, and Prestige Park Car

Essentially, it is first class service minus the private room and bath. It turned out to be a great deal.

During the day the beds convert to bench seating, usually while you’re at breakfast service, and then back in the evening during dinner service. As noted in my 10 Things VIA Rail Doesn’t Tell You About “The Canadian” But Should post , the upper and lower birth are in the hallway meaning you are essentially in a walkway.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

Although a bit concerned at first by this discovery, I’m happy to report that with the curtains drawn the experience felt very private and super cosy. Also noted is the upper birth does not have a window , thus a cheaper rate by a couple of hundred dollars. I’ve heard it can feel very disorienting and claustrophobic so consider this if you are looking to save.

  • READ MORE: 10 Things VIA Rail Doesn’t tell you About the Canadian but Should.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

I truly enjoyed my lower birth window. Waking up to see where we were in Canada each morning was a pleasant surprise and watching Canada go by while reading in my bunk was a great pass time.

Is VIA Rail Business Class Worth The Upgrade?

Rocky Start

After spending an awesome weekend exploring Kingston Ontario , I arrived by train to Tronto‘s Union station. Concerned about sleeping in a hallway, something I only discovered while leafing through a pamphlet about The Canadian train, I asked at check-in about upgrading to a private room. In a tone that could only be interpreted as “are you really going to make me check on something you have no intention of paying for?” I was told it would be an additional $1,400.

I politely passed and made my way to the lounge. Inside staff seemed frantic. The train, although not uncommon, was very late. So with a few hours to kill before my Canadian train review departed I decided to check my luggage and explore.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

At baggage check, I asked what time they closed and was told not to worry, “we are here until your train leaves.” When I came back at 12:15 when our very delayed train was finally boarding I was surprised to find my bag all by itself out in the open. When I walked up to it I received attitude from the clerk I had spoken to earlier.

“You’re lucky, I was just about to leave.” I smiled remembering our previous conversation and would have left it at that but then was told: “next time make sure you pick up your bag 30-minutes before you leave or you will not get it.“

I get it. I held her up but was not told I had to be there 30-minutes prior. It was also not the warm welcome I was expecting when I was about to depart on such an epic (and expensive) trip.

Sadly, this type of “I don’t give a f@ck” attitude would pop up throughout the trip. I came in with an attitude that I should expect more. This was the wrong attitude to have.

What Is it Like on Board The Canadian Train?

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

I shrugged off the odd attitude and enjoyed a very relaxed and laid back trip. My days onboard The Canadian were filled with enjoying Canada going by. I would be rocked awake and would eagerly peel back the curtain to take in the view. If the train happened to be stopped ( which is frequent given The Canadian has to give way to freight trains ) I would head for the shower to avoid a bumpy wash. There was never a wait for this.

That said, the ride is surprisingly smooth in comparison to other train trips I have done . This is thanks to the thorough eyeballing the wheels get after each journey. This includes wheel levelling and grinding down any rough edges to provide the smoothest trip possible.

  • READ MORE: My 2nd Class Train Trip in Thailand

I would then hit the breakfast dining car with friends made onboard followed by enjoying the complimentary coffee and view from the domed Skyline Car . With four days of no Internet, this meant no distractions. I was free to relax and truly enjoy Canada going by. From the Wheat Kings and endless fields of the Prairies to the bogs of the Canadian Shield, it was a slow yet incredibly scenic way to see the country.

I spent the afternoons napping or having cocktails in the Park Car. There I taught a Guatemalan immigrant about Canadian culture – hello Caesars, euchre, and The Tragically Hip.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

This schedule stays true up until Edmonton with the addition of the Panorama Car. This makes the journey from Jasper to Vancouver that much more scenic, however, I was partial to the view from The Park Car as:

  • The seats are on the upper level giving a better view.
  • It’s above a bar.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

There are activities onboard each day and include educational talks and performances by musicians. The activities seemed a bit forced on staff that did not want to host them however the musicians were great.

Where Does The Canadian Train Stop?

The Canadian is first and foremost a method of transportation from A to B. Stops are few and far between and never clear on how long. The only exceptions are in Winnipeg where the crew changes, Edmonton with the addition of the Panorama Car, and Jasper.

Depending on whether the train is on time or not, stops are not consistent in length. If long enough, there is a tour is an option in Winnipeg. On my trip we were running behind so I set off on my own a self-guided tour of Winnipeg.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

Jasper only offered enough time to stroll the main drag and stop for a flight of beer at Jasper Brewing Company. This is unfortunate as there is much to see and do in the area.

NOTE: VIA Rail does offer stopover options and would highly recommend for those expecting to see more than the train on this trip. Jasper, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Kamloops are good options.

What Is The Food Like on The Canadian Train?

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

Meal service on this  Canadian train review, although a bit confusing at first, get people fed in an efficient way. At the beginning of your trip, you select a seating time which stays the same for the duration of your trip. Meals are surprisingly good, although I am always impressed when food of any quality can be pushed out on a train, plane or river cruise . Meals included many regional dishes which was a nice touch and I never left hungry, day or night.

rail travel tours reviews

The service itself was a bit lacking. Plates were often slapped down in a messy heap and on several occasions, I could see staff wiping off silverware with the table clothes. Nothing crazy but again, for the price paid I expected more.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

The odd lacking service continued in the bar car. Although the staff was more than happy to assist in the Prestige Park Car, the Skyline Bar Car, not so much.

One night while drinking in the Prestige bar I purchased a round at last call for my new friends and took a bucket of ice to the observation deck of the Sky Line Car for a view of the wildfires in British Columbia. Not even one beer in the attendant working that car accused us of bringing the beer on board and made us finish the drinks or she would take them away. It was shocking to me to see this, again because of the ticket price.

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

Over breakfast the next day I got a better understanding of why the service fell short on this Canadian train review. While dining with a tour guide who used to work for the Rocky Mountaineer , Western Canada’s premier train service, he pointed out that VIA Rail is a subsidized and a unionized company. The Rocky Mountaineer is not.

Interesting and sad if that is the heart of these service issues on this Canadian train review. Also, I can’t help but feel that because there is no competition to The Canadian , the staff does not have to bring their best. That could just be me…

Would I do it again?

VIA Rail's The Canadian Train Review: An Unbiassed Experience

Despite the many shortcomings I experienced on my Canadian train review, I’m happy to say I would do it again. Yes, the staff could have been better and the trip could have been more than getting from A to B but the overall experience is something so incredibly Canadian that it only inspired and strengthened my already strong love for my country.

I arrived at the Pacific Central Station in Vancouver refreshed and energized by the trip. I rode the rails that united a nation, something very few people have done.

Perhaps my next journey will be in Prestige Class or Economy and I will have a different take on the experience but the takeaway should be that there will be another Canadian Train experience for me. There truly is no better way to see the diversity of Canada’s vast geography…and no other company to take you.

What say you? Thoughts on this  VIA Rail Canadian Train Review? Would you take this trip? Let’s hear it!

We just completed the Via Rail trip from Toronto to Vancouver, and had a private Sleeper Plus cabin for two. You mentioned the Sleeper Plus as being what we would call upper and lower semi-private berths. This is one type, and the Sleeper cabin for two is also very comfortable and offers private toilet and sink. This would have been good to review.

Plus comments: great food, generally good service, comfortable beds, wonderful scenery, chances to leave the train for short periods of time.

Con coments: No Wifi on board. This is not acceptable in 2022. The ride is long with very little to do, and the ability to watch movies and browse the internet would help. Also, there was no entertainment short of champagne and snacks when we boarded in Toronto. I expected some musicians, informative talks, other entertainment to wile away the hours.

Suggestions: A gift shop on board would do very well with passengers with nothing to do and some money to spend. An exercise room with at least treadmills would be helpful as walking the train involves frequent moving around passengers and staff in the narrow halls. More advertising in Canada would be really helpful. Our particular trip had many American travellers and few Canadians. I think there is a lot Via Rail could do to boost ridership within Canada and advertising would be a start.

Avatar

Thanks, Marimae and I agree on advertising for sure. It would be nice for more Canadians to experience their country this way as it gives some context to how big and diverse the country truly is.

The Wifi, although I agree should be standard these days, is kinda nice to not have IMO. I enjoyed the break from my phone and it forced me to read a book and interact with others, something lost these days.

Great to hear Grant! I am in the same boat and was actually booked to repeat the trip in 2020 but then Covid happened. As far as the negative comments, it was certainly my experience at the time and know that everyone can have a different experience based on the circumstances. The takeaway certainly is that it is a great way to see the country as you point out! I ended up driving across Canada three times during the pandemic and loved it but it is exhausting. The train, not at all!

I hope to rebook soon in Prestiege. Curious, how much time did you actually spend in your room? I think that is a good factor on determining if the upgraded class is worth the price tag.

Avatar

April 2022: My wife and I just completed the Toronto to Vancouver trip. I don’t know if Via Rail has changed after Covid, but we experienced nothing but fantastic service from both the Toronto to Winnipeg and Winnipeg to Vancouver crews. We booked the trip thinking this would be a once in a lifetime because of the cost and ended the trip knowing that we will be doing the trip again. We booked the Prestige room and at the end felt the expense was well worth it. I would like to try booking the upper and lower berths next time and enjoy the lounge that is available to others after 4:00 pm. I was surprised how few used it after 4. The first 3 rows in the dome are reserved for Prestige after 4, but during the day we all spread out and we often sat in the last row! Take out the negative comments that you experienced and I’d say your review was right on. No, the food is not great, but it was very good and filling. The equalizer was the view out the window – all classes saw the same view. We have driven that route in our car, but this was a whole new view, especially from the dome. As the driver I often missed things, but not on this trip. One is never truly relaxed while driving. Riding on a train is total relaxation!!!!

Can you give me an idea of the dimensions of the bed in Prestige? We recently stayed with someone who gave us a (what I know as a 3/4 bed) about 4′ wide. Is the bed this small? Thanks in advance.

My intention is to take the best train trip there is in the Americas. If the train is late— all the better. Means I’ll be on the train longer. If the crew isn’t up to snuff, I don’t care about that either. I will get what I need from them and I always turn a negative in to a positive by getting free stuff afterward as a repayment. So there’s that.

What I need is some advice. I’ve never ridden VIA rail before and don’t know the ins or outs. There will be two of us but we can’t sleep together because I move around too much. So— I want to get one Prestige room for two and something for myself to sleep in for just overnight. Then I can rejoin my wife for daytime.

More than anything, I am looking forward to that 4 day train ride. On Amtrak, the longest trip is 2 1/2 days. And there is a big difference in comfort and food quality between Amtrak and the Canadian. BUT— I’m no food Gourmet either and I pretty much like everything.

What I need advice about is knowing what month to go for the best experience. When to book by. What car to ask for and for me– what sleeping accommodations make the most sense. $22,000 is a bit too much for adjoining Prestige rooms—although it really would be awesome! Right?” We want to begin in Toronto and end in Vancouver. Does it matter what our starting point is? We figured that we’d start at the most boring part and end in the most exciting part. Make sense?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the Canadian is certainly for you as it is the only passenger option across the country. I loved it for that and will be doing it again!

As for your sleeping arrangements, I would think the cabins can be configured for separate beds. It’s not clear on their site so I suggest you contact VIA to confirm this and options. There are options in the sleeper cars for 3 or 4 people so I am sure they can accommodate.

The food is good, not great. I am always impressed by meals on moving kitchens so am more than happy with the offerings. If you are interested in a true food and train experience, check out the Presidential Train in Portugal! –> https://www.thislifeintrips.com/presidential-train-review-foodie-train/

As for dates, summer months between July and September are best for nicest weather however it will be busy. The fall would be my recommendation as crowds are less, prices are lower, and you still get nice weather. I suggest late September as you will get the fall colours in Ontario. If you travel west to east and depart early you have a better chance of seeing more but are at mercy of CP rail delays. If you are really looking for scenery I suggest taking the Rocky Mountaineer as it is a scenic ride where as VIA is A to B.

Hope that helps! Would love to hear your recommendations on Amtrack trips in the states. I have only done the Cascade from Vancouver to Portland.

Enjoyed reading your review. My family and I took the Canadian (sleeper class for four), or its then-equivalent, from Vancouver to Toronto back in 1974 when I was a kid and had just moved from New Zealand to Canada, and my parents wanted to show us what the country was like. Great experience. I’d like to do it again one day…

Thanks! Curious to hear how it compares to your trip in the 1970’s. Hope you get to do it again and if so, I would love to hear your thoughts!

My husband and I paid the full $10,000+ for Prestige Cabin and it failed to meet the expectations set forth by the Prestige Cabin advertisements. The staff from Toronto -> Winnipeg were amazing: friendly, accommodating, helpful, etc. The staff switched from Winnipeg to Vancouver and were not friendly, unhelpful and complained to us about vacuuming the hallways. While the private, in-cabin bathrooms were lovely with plenty of hot water and unexpected (but great) Le Labo amenities, the food in the dining car was not very good and it meant we spent a lot of time in our private bathroom. The wine on the trip is substandard (Canada is known for many things but wine really shouldn’t be one of them) and we were not able to bring our own and pay corkage. Marketing this trip as “luxury” while failing to demonstrate a true understanding of providing a luxurious experience left us feeling like we never wanted to return and will definitely not recommend this trip to anyone with luxury expectations. I absolutely feel that $10,000 was a waste for this trip and regret not going elsewhere. If I had joined the train at a lower price point and had a lower expectation for the amenities and food, I would have been satisfied.

Oh my. So sorry to hear. I experienced the poor service with some of the staff as noted and sorry to see that extends to the Prestige Cabin as well. I think this highlights my choice of a bunk instead of a private cabin and the value that provides. Hopefully VIA Rail sees these comments and addresses.

We’re hoping to travel this way in May 23. Have taken on board your comments. Can you tell me how the double bed was? I cannot find the dimensions anywhere. I am thinking we may be more comfortable in separate bunks.

Hi My name is Carson and I will be taking the Canadian in July 2020 Great review down to earth. I liked it one thing I noticed was Canada became a country in 1867 not In 1885 or 1886. I liked your pictures well done.

Thanks Carson! I hope you enjoy the trip and that these tips help manage some expectations! Thanks for catching that typo! I have updated accordingly!

After taking Via from Jasper to Prince Rupert (return) we took the Canadian from Jasper to Edmonton. The Jasper – PR trip was terrible. The Canadian experience was a little bit better, mostly because it had a dining car which the Via trip did not offer. That being said I can’t recommend the Canadian. You will be better off driving between Jasper and Edmonton – you will see almost the same scenery, be able to stop along the way and save yourself half a day of time. The trip is scheduled to take 6 1/2 hours which is twice what it takes to drive. Then add on several hours because the train is always late. And almost always by 2 or more hours. It’s just not worth it

Thanks for the comment Frank and sorry to hear about your experience. I took the Canadian from Edmonton to Jasper for Christmas one year and really enjoyed it. It allowed us to not worry about a car and enjoy the scenery while having a drink and playing some cards. Totally agree though, driving you can get out and see more and VIA is terrible at keeping its schedule!

Collette History & Story

History Back in 1918, when Jack Collette started the company, the first tour to ever run was made up of a jitney bus of travelers that left Boston, Massachusetts headed for Florida. This three-week adventure cost just $61.50! At that time few could have foreseen that nearly 100 years later, that same company would be taking guests from around the world to all seven continents. Today Collette is now a global company. With offices in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, its team of dedicated experts can cater to the tastes of distinct groups of travelers. Collette's diverse travel collection features comprehensive land tours, river cruises, rail journeys, small group tours, city stays, and a variety of travel styles and tour types to meet every traveler's needs.  We seamlessly handle the details - all our guests need to do is enjoy the journey. Awards Collette has been honored with Travel Weekly's 21st annual Readers' Choice Awards (RCAs) on December 13, 2023. Collette was thrilled to take home two awards at the RCAs this year: Best Tour Operator for the US and Best Tour Operator for Canada.

The Travelling Well Experience

Each guest that travels with us deserves a memorable and fulfilling travel experience. And we intend to continue to deliver on that promise. Your health, well-being, and enjoyment remain our top focus — just as they have been since we started in 1918.

Our team consults with health and security experts all around the world to ensure a healthy and enjoyable travel experience. Let’s take a look into the steps we’re taking for you.

Cancel for Any Reason Waiver

Our Travel Protection Plan financially protects you in the event you need to cancel or move your trip to a different date. Learn more here

Pre-Tour Health Screenings

We will ask all travellers to complete a wellness declaration form before joining their tour.

Private Sedan Service

Your ride to and from the airport will be stocked with fresh water for every pickup and all surfaces will be disinfected daily and after every passenger.

Specific details will vary by airline, but standard operations typically include flight attendants wearing masks, sanitizing all surfaces between flights and physical distancing. For links to major airlines, head to the bottom of the page, or visit your airline’s website for specific information.

Smaller Groups

Tours will operate with a number of empty seats to allow guests to space out for a more comfortable experience.

Your Tour Manager

We have employed new and enhanced hygiene & physical distancing protocols for tour managers. They are local experts and highly trained to handle a variety of unexpected situations — including illnesses and emergencies. They are also available 24/7 for guests throughout the tour should any situation arise.

Use of Face Coverings

Face coverings will be included with your pre-tour documents and will be required throughout many experiences on tour including the motor coach and air travel.

Motor Coach

All surfaces will be sanitized often, including regular cleaning of high-touch areas with disinfecting wipes. Hand sanitizer will be available at all times and drivers will wear protective gear when appropriate.

On-Tour Experiences

We work closely with our local partners to ensure adequate physical distancing during meals, experiences, and sightseeing. Guests may be rotated in smaller sub-groups when necessary.

On-Tour Insurance Coverages

When you purchase our Travel Protection Plan, you’ll have access to telehealth services should you need it, plus you’re covered on tour for emergency assistance, baggage loss, trip interruption, medical expenses, and more. Learn more here

Self-Screening

We will ask all travellers to monitor their health throughout their tour, with protocols in place in the event someone becomes ill.

Specific protocols will vary from destination to destination, hotel to hotel. Overall, rooms and areas like restaurants, fitness centres, etc. will be deep-cleaned regularly, with rooms disinfected thoroughly between guests. High-traffic areas like lobbies and elevators will be cleaned hourly.

After you get home, you’ll be able to share your opinions of your tour experience, allowing us to constantly improve for the benefit of future guests.

Sustainability

We’re proud of our long legacy of giving back, especially to our local communities. Today, we are driving that legacy forward by continuing to be more responsible across four focus areas: People, Community, Planet, and Travel. People: Our employees are at the heart of our responsibility platform; pushing for change, creating priorities, and generously giving their time to support programs and initiatives. Community: We seek to support our local communities and those across the world through grants and initiatives that focus on ending hunger and improving education outcomes, especially among children Planet: Because our industry relies heavily on fossil fuels and contributes to global climate change, we feel it is important for us as a company to address our impact on the environment. Travel: We want to make responsible decisions when it comes to traveling to destinations across the world. This includes supporting and promoting local culture, heritage, and economies. These are the initiatives that this operator has in place to make your adventure more sustainable: Sustainability Programs - Invests a percentage of revenue back into community projects or sustainability projects  - We host community-building or sustainability projects for tour-goers to partake in Reducing Carbon Emissions - Has a program in place and are working towards becoming fully carbon neutral Supporting Destinations and Local Communities - Hires local guides - Brings our passengers to locally run restaurants & businesses Animal Welfare - Does not offer any tours that include elephant riding - Does not offer any tours that use animals for entertainment - We avoid places that sell/eat parts of endangered animals on tour Company Culture - Hosts community-building or sustainability projects for staff to partake in - Educates people about sustainability through our marketing

Questions & Answers

How can i plan for shore landings.

Special clothing is required for the shore landings (Antarctica, Galapagos); please refer to your predeparture documents for important details.

Are attractions always available?

Access to some attractions or Collette Foundation sites may be affected by the observance of holidays, weather conditions or other circumstances. As a result, the days and order of sightseeing may change to best utilize your time on tour. Boat rides are weather permitting. Some attractions may not be available during the "off-season" months. When attractions are unavailable, other similar attractions will be substituted. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

When can I check into my hotel?

Normal check-in time is late afternoon in most locations. Due to early arrival times into some cities, rooms may not always be available for immediate check-in.

What is the difference between a twin room and a double room?

In certain countries, hotel rooms tend to be smaller than U.S. standard accommodations. A double room is designed to accommodate two people, but may not have two separate beds. A twin-bedded room has two separate beds of any size, and is the type most commonly utilized.

How can I be best prepared for the pacing and physical requirements on a Collette tour?

Tour pacing varies by itinerary, and each destination's sightseeing and activities are unique. Pacing is subject to personal interpretation. At Collette, we do include the best a destination has to offer, enhancing your overall tour experience. For overnight pacing of a tour, please refer to the "Accommodations" section on each tour page and on the tour map. These describe the number of nights you will stay in each hotel during your tour. The day-by-day descriptions will provide additional detail about the number of activities included in each day. The Tour Activity Level Ranking is featured on each tour itinerary in a circle. The definition of each activity level is listed here. If you have additional questions regarding a specific tour, please inquire at time of reservation. For your comfort, we recommend packing comfortable walking shoes so you can fully enjoy every aspect of your tour. Level 1: At a very leisurely pace, this tour involves minimal physical activity, such as climbing some stairs, boarding a motorcoach, and walking from the hotel reception area to hotel rooms and dining areas. Level 2: This tour requires average physical activity. You should be in good health, able to climb stairs and walk reasonable distances, possibly over uneven ground and cobblestoned streets. Level 3: This tour includes moderate physical activity. The itinerary blends some longer days with shorter days and more leisure time. Walking tours, as well as walking slightly longer distances, up stairs or on uneven walking surfaces should be expected. Level 4: To truly experience the program and destination, you need to be able to participate in physical activities such as longer walking tours, walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs and periods of standing. Some of the touring days may be longer, with select included activities occurring later in the evening. Level 5: This tour is very active, requiring participants to be physically fit to fully enjoy all the experiences. This itinerary has more strenuous activities which may include such things as: extensive walking tours, transfers over uneven and dusty terrain, high altitudes, early morning departures, late night activities, or extreme temperatures. All conditions do not apply to all days, so please read the itinerary carefully and speak to one of our travel counselors to determine if this tour is right for you. We recommend this program to individuals who are physically fit. Unfortunately, this tour is not appropriate for individuals who use either walkers or wheelchairs. If this trip is not ideally suited for you, our travel counselors can help determine the perfect trip for you.

Where do I meet my Tour Manager?

Your tour will begin at your first hotel. The Tour Manager will make contact with you at the hotel and will provide details relating to your tour. The hotel's address and phone number will be included in your documents.

Is there a lot of walking on tour?

We pride ourselves on bringing travelers the very best experiences a destination offers. Our itineraries include many activities and may consist of walking on uneven terrain or significant walking at times. Some of the most unique sightseeing can mean accessing locations that restrict motorcoaches, especially in historic areas. Some hotels/lodges in remote locations may not have elevators. For your comfort, we recommend bringing walking shoes.

Can children travel on a Collette tour?

Children over the age of 5 may travel on a Collette tour accompanied by an adult. Child land rates are valid for ages 5-12, sharing a room with two full-paying adults.

4 great scenic train rides across the US

Bill Fink

Want to truly immerse yourself in the vastness of the USA? There's no better way than to take a scenic cross-country train trip.

During these long-distance train rides, the journey is just as exciting as the destination itself. Relaxing in your seat as you watch the U.S. landscape out your train car window slowly change from cities to farmlands or from wide-open plains to towering mountains is an experience that's worth the extra transit time.

Amtrak offers many overnight and multiday scenic train rides across the U.S. from the East Coast, the West Coast and everywhere in between. Route names like the Empire Builder, the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr are enough to inspire wanderlust for any traveler.

Whether you're new to train travel or an avid rider of the rails, here are four bucket list-worthy U.S. train rides to take for stunning scenery, plus some tips on how best to book and enjoy them.

Tips for cross-country train travel

rail travel tours reviews

While taking a cross-country train trip can be a rewarding experience, as it offers days to leisurely sit back and enjoy scenic landscapes, many people have worries about how best to book such a long trip and what to expect when it comes to sleeping arrangements. TPG has a few tips to help you get on board with the concept and easily plan your journey.

Browse routes by region

rail travel tours reviews

A good first step to take when looking for a route that's right for you is to search Amtrak's "Browse by Region" menu. You can pick a large area of the country from which to start or finish your trip.

Once you click on an area, Amtrak will provide lists of highlighted long-distance routes, as well as shorter point-to-point trips. You can then select a route like the Capitol Corridor in California before being directed to ticket purchase menus.

Explore Amtrak Vacations

rail travel tours reviews

Amtrak offers curated vacation packages to rail travelers via its Amtrak Vacations website. These tours can include side trips (via bus) to national parks , sightseeing tours in cities and hotel lodging on stopovers along the route. You can search for packages around vacation themes like "Fall Foliage" and "Multiple National Parks."

Amtrak's set of "Most Scenic Journeys" vacation packages include trips lasting up to two weeks that combine rail travel and additional tours. Think of these trips like cruises with shore excursions . Some of the scenic journey-designated options focus on national parks, while others are big-city oriented.

You can click on each option's details to find itineraries, dates and prices. Then, all that's left to do is book your rail vacation.

Consider famous routes

rail travel tours reviews

A shortcut to finding scenic cross-country rail routes on Amtrak is to visit its Amtrak Vacations website and click on "Famous Rail Routes." This set of approximately 20 different overnight train routes gives you a great set of suggestions for your own potential cross-country journeys.

For more details on the fixed routes, click on any of the tabs. Once you've chosen a route, you can either book a package tour with Amtrak Vacations or go to the regular Amtrak website and book a point-to-point trip.

Weigh your accommodation options

Taking an overnight or a multiday train trip means you'll need to sleep aboard the train. All of Amtrak's long-distance train trips provide a variety of seating and room arrangments.

The cheapest way to travel is to simply book a seat on the route. While Amtrak's seating is comfortable, with more legroom than you'll find in an airline's business class, it may not be the way you want to travel for many hours. You can get up, walk the train and stop in the cafe car, but this can still be a tough way to travel during a multiday journey.

Fortunately, Amtrak provides several classes of accommodations on cross-country trips, ranging from shared roomettes with fold-out bunks to bedrooms, larger family bedrooms and suites complete with private bathrooms and showers. Should you book one of these rooms on a cross-country itinerary, you'll enjoy access to a separate dining car.

Prices for the various ticket classes vary widely between routes and dates, so check potential itineraries to find the best option for you.

4 scenic train trips to take in the US

Now that you know the basics when it comes to picking a long-distance train route, you'll want to narrow down your options. Although there are many scenic routes in the U.S., here are our four favorites.

California Zephyr: San Francisco to Chicago

rail travel tours reviews

Amtrak's California Zephyr route travels between San Francisco and Chicago on a three-day journey. The 51-hour trip (on the west-to-east path) begins in nearby Emeryville, California, then travels through central California farmlands up into the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Along this part of the route, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramas from glassed-in viewing cars.

The train continues through Reno and the Nevada deserts into Salt Lake City before traveling up into the Rocky Mountains to reach Denver . You'll descend into the wide-open plains of Nebraska and eventually wind your way into the Windy City.

This trip is a great way to immerse yourself in the American West, as you'll get a true feeling of the vastness of the region and the variety of terrain that makes up the country.

One-way prices start at $141 per person for a seat in coach and $688 for a room.

Empire Builder: Seattle to Chicago

rail travel tours reviews

The Empire Builder train route connects Chicago and Seattle on a 46-hour journey connecting the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. The train loosely follows the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, the route the explorers took to map out the region acquired during the Louisiana Purchase.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark would have appreciated sitting back in the train's viewing cars to enjoy eyefuls of Montana 's Big Sky Country, Glacier National Park , the Cascade Range and the vast plains of North Dakota. Additionally, the explorers would have marveled at the metalwork of North Dakota's towering Gassman Coulee Trestle bridge.

Should you wish to depart or arrive in Portland, Oregon, instead of Seattle, know that there's an alternate route of the Empire Builder from this Pacific Northwest city, so you can plan your itinerary based on your preferences.

One-way train fares from Chicago to Seattle begin at $150 per person, while rooms cost at least $651.

Southwest Chief: Los Angeles to Chicago

rail travel tours reviews

Traverse the American Southwest on a southern route between Los Angeles and Chicago. The Southwest Chief route departs daily and takes roughly 40 hours to cross eight states.

For some of the journey, the train follows the classic American road trip thoroughfare of historic Route 66 . However, unlike its car-friendly neighbor, the train route offers views you won't find while driving the highway, as it winds on twisting tracks that travel through narrow red-rock canyon passages before offering wide-open vistas of mountains and deserts.

The train's main stops include Kansas City, Missouri; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Flagstaff, Arizona. You can also take advantage of excursions from the train when you purchase one of Amtrak's vacation packages. For example, you can visit the Grand Canyon (by train or bus) while the train is stopped in Williams, Arizona.

Even if you never leave the train, the views along the way are enough to create lasting memories.

Expect to pay at least $146 per person for a coach seat on this one-way route or a minimum of $899 for a room.

Crescent: New York City to New Orleans

rail travel tours reviews

See the American South on this 30-hour journey between New York City and New Orleans . Departing the urban landscape of the Big Apple, this route will take you through the Northeastern cityscapes of Philadelphia , Baltimore and Washington, D.C. , among other destinations.

Once it exits the urban corridor, the train winds through the countryside of Virginia and the Carolinas, offering stops in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina. Then, it continues through the Deep South states of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi before reaching its final stop in New Orleans.

Tickets for this one-way route start at $139 for a seat in coach and $580 for a room.

Bottom line

Traveling by train across the U.S. gives you a unique perspective of the scale and scope of the American landscape. While it may be slower than flying across the country, rail travel gives you the opportunity to sit back and savor the journey, appreciating the changing views as the hours roll by.

The four scenic cross-country train trips highlighted here are only some of Amtrak's many long-distance journeys available to book. By exploring Amtrak's website, you can find many different rail journeys in nearly every part of the U.S. Best of all, most offer an array of seating options, so you can choose the ticket that best suits your travel preferences and budget.
