Road Trip Car Characteristics
Passenger space: People turn cranky when they aren't comfortable after hours on the road. There needs to be space for everyone to stretch out.
Cargo space: At the very minimum, you'll be bringing luggage along and maybe also camping gear or tubes for floating the river. Make sure there's space for your gear.
Fuel economy: Stopping for gas on a road trip can get expensive. Fuel efficiency, particularly from hybrid powertrains, can ease the pain of stopping at the pump.
Infotainment: An AM/FM radio is no longer sufficient for most people. An infotainment system that's easy to use while driving and can connect to smartphones is key.
Safety tech: Driving long distances causes fatigue, and fatigue causes accidents. Modern driver-assistance features can help you stay alert and in your lane.
Reliability: No one wants to be the car in the breakdown lane while on their road trip. A good predicted reliability score shows that a particular model has on average been a solid performer over time.

10 Best Road-Trip Vehicles That You Can Buy Right Now
CR's tests show that these are the best road-trip models across popular categories
Finding the perfect road-trip vehicle means striking a balance among many factors, such as front and rear seat comfort, space, fuel economy, ride quality, and noise. It also should be a vehicle that’s easy to live with when you’re not traveling, and with strong safety and reliability. That is a lot to ask of a single vehicle, but our analysts have scrutinized our test and survey data to find the best road-trip vehicles in 10 popular categories.
To find the standouts, we considered all those factors among models that meet the stringent criteria to be recommended by Consumer Reports . Each vehicle below scores at least average in those factors, plus they provide 500 miles or more of highway cruising range, based on our fuel-economy tests. They also have a sizable trunk or cargo area, based on our measurements. Because of the qualification needed to make a great long-distance runner, we omitted subcompact SUVs and small cars. We also list suitable alternatives, where possible.
All the vehicles featured here, except the Buick, come standard with forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection. (The advanced safety systems are optional on the Buick.)
The 10 models below are road-trip warriors, based on CR data. You can assemble your own list with CR ratings by using our A-to-Z guide . If you’re a Consumer Reports member, the full list is available to you here.

How road trip insurance works
How to choose between road trip travel insurance companies, best plans for road trip travel insurance, other tips for road trip travel insurance, top cards with travel insurance for road trips, road trip travel insurance recapped.
There’s nothing quite like breezing down a highway with the windows down, the wind in your hair and a cooler full of sodas in the back seat. Whether you’re traveling alone or enjoying a road trip with friends or family, you’ll want to be sure that you’re covered with travel protections on your drive. This is as true whether you're embarking on a classic American road trip — like U.S. Route 66 — are or braving the roadways in a foreign country, in your own car or a rented vehicle.
Let’s take a look at road trip travel insurance, how it works and the best plans for auto travel insurance to suit your needs.
Road trips aren't immune to disruptions, and road trip insurance works similarly to travel insurance . Most plans require purchase before your trip begins and cover your prepaid expenses.
For rental cars
Not all third-party travel insurance policies automatically include coverage for a rental vehicle. Seek out plans that provide rental car insurance specifically — or book your car with a credit card that offers these specific protections .
Rental car travel insurance policies generally protect against damage to the rental vehicle only. Causes not within your control, such as collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood damage are typically covered.
Because of the limited scope of rental car insurance, know that you may be on the hook if you’re liable for damage to other vehicles or if there’s bodily injury.
When picking up your rental car, you will likely be offered the insurance sold by the rental car company at the counter, typically called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You can decline this protection if you have sufficient coverage elsewhere (e.g., via a third-party policy or a credit card).
For your personal vehicle
Getting road trip insurance for your own vehicle isn't as common as travel insurance for rental cars , but it can still be a valuable consideration depending on your situation. For instance, access to roadside assistance can provide peace of mind if you are driving for long stretches in rural areas.
Finally, road tripping doesn’t end at driving a car. Other trip protections you may consider including in a travel insurance policy include medical evacuation, trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance . This is true whether you opt to drive your own vehicle or rent one for your trip.

With several travel insurance companies out there, it can be difficult to narrow down the one you really need. Before buying, always get quotes from multiple businesses.
This is because coverage levels and prices can vary dramatically. Insurance aggregators such as InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth (a NerdWallet partner) allow you to generate multiple quotes at once, plus they include filters for sorting so you can find the right policy for you.
Here are a few things to consider when looking for road trip insurance:
Whether you’re renting a car.
Where you're traveling.
Whether you already have car insurance.
What types of coverage you’re interested in.
If you’re also planning on flying, cruising or using a ferry.
How long you’ll be gone.
The cost of the plan.
To figure out the best road travel insurance, we combed a variety of insurance providers to check out their offerings.

At Insurify, our goal is to help customers compare insurance products and find the best policy for them. We strive to provide open, honest, and unbiased information about the insurance products and services we review. Our hard-working team of data analysts, insurance experts, insurance agents, editors and writers, has put in thousands of hours of research to create the content found on our site.
We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. That may impact which products we display and where they appear on our site. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. We do not guarantee favorable reviews or any coverage at all in exchange for compensation.

Reviewing your car insurance needs is one thing to add to your “to-do” list before heading out on a road trip. Your car insurance policy covers your car in all 50 U.S. states and Canada, even if you drive through a state with higher or lower insurance minimums. [1]
If you’re planning to rent a car, you may decide to buy rental car coverage in some cases.

How does car insurance work when you’re on a road trip?
Most auto insurance policies include a “broadening clause” that essentially converts your auto coverage into the minimum coverage for a particular state where you travel temporarily. So, you shouldn’t need to buy a new policy or change your coverage to drive legally in other states on a road trip.
Your policy will also cover any friends or family members joining you on the road trip as long as you give them permission. This is “permissive use” and applies to non-travel car usage as well. [2]
If you don’t have a personal auto insurance policy, you should purchase rental insurance for your road trip.
Road trip insurance when driving your own car
A good auto policy will cover common road trip problems like flat tires, collisions, vehicle damage from severe weather, and more. Depending on the details of your specific policy, it may already include coverage that protects you and your passengers. Because a road trip naturally means spending more time on the road, it may increase your chances of having car troubles.
Even if your policy has a broadening clause, your coverage levels depend on the state where you’re driving. If you only have your state’s minimum-coverage requirements, your policy won’t cover your vehicle in an incident.
Adding coverage or increasing your coverage levels can help protect your finances. Here are the different types of coverage you can look for.
Liability coverage
Liability car insurance pays for the other driver’s injuries and car repair bills if you cause a car accident. It also pays for legal expenses if the other driver sues you. Every state, with the exception of New Hampshire, requires you to have a minimum level of liability coverage.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for your and your passengers’ medical expenses if another driver causes an accident and has insufficient car insurance to pay your bills. Some states require this type of coverage, but it’s optional in others.
Collision and comprehensive coverage
Often sold as a package, collision insurance pays to repair your own car when you’re in an accident, regardless of fault, while comprehensive coverage pays for a host of other issues, like theft, falling objects, and run-ins with animals. These coverages are optional.
Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage
PIP insurance covers lost wages and medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. Some states require drivers to carry PIP.
Roadside assistance coverage
You may be able to access roadside assistance through your car insurance company, your credit card benefits, or a third-party company like AAA. It covers the costs of services, like towing and flat tires, if you have a problem while driving. This type of coverage is optional but can save the day in a road trip emergency.
Road trip insurance when driving a rental car
If you’re driving a rental car on your road trip, your own car insurance policy will extend coverage to you and anyone listed on the policy for the same limits. You don’t have to buy additional insurance, but you may have some gaps in coverage if you have a liability-only policy.
Rental car companies require you to pay for any costs associated with the rental vehicle and your passengers following damage from a collision, vehicle theft, or vandalism. For this reason, some people with personal liability-only insurance choose to purchase rental car insurance from the rental company.
This optional protection comes in the form of a collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver, which means the rental company waives some or all of your financial obligations for the car. But CDWs have limitations because they usually don’t include bodily injury coverage for you and your passengers and damage to other cars and property.
Driving a rental car when you don’t have insurance
You must have some form of insurance to drive legally in most U.S. states. So if you’re renting a car and don’t have your own auto policy, you’ll need to get coverage in some way.
Some of your options for rental car insurance include:
Credit card company: Some credit card companies offer a type of rental car insurance coverage as a benefit to their cardholders. The protection usually comes in the form of a CDW that you can use on rental cars. Some cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, offer primary coverage for rental cars at home and in foreign countries, while others may offer secondary coverage.
Temporary automobile insurance: A temporary car insurance policy from a major insurer can provide various coverage options with different coverage limits to choose from.
Car rental company: You can pay for a CDW from the car rental company, though you may need additional protection through temporary auto insurance.
Other forms of insurance: Homeowners insurance or renters insurance can protect you financially if someone steals personal belongings from your car, while health insurance can pay for your medical care. [3]

Does your car insurance cover you in Mexico?
If you live in the U.S. and drive into Mexico, your regular auto insurance policy won’t cover you. You’ll need to purchase a separate temporary car insurance policy tailored to driving over the border.
Many major auto insurance companies, such as Progressive and GEICO , offer temporary coverage for trips ranging from one day to several months. These policies should include a minimum amount of liability insurance, and you can add protection for property damage, roadside assistance, collision coverage, and more.
You’ll also need to bring the following documents with you on your trip:
Government-approved travel document, such as a passport or passport card
Vehicle registration
Car insurance policy for driving in Mexico
Valid U.S. driver’s license
A temporary vehicle importation permit
A letter of permission from your auto lender (if you lease or finance your car)
Does your car insurance cover you in Canada?
In short, yes. Car insurance policies from major U.S. insurers cover you if you plan to drive your car into Canada.
You’ll need to carry the following documents with you on your trip:
Standard auto insurance ID card
A Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card, which you can request from your insurance company
You’ll typically need to show your passport, vehicle registration, and a copy of your standard auto insurance ID card at the border.
The Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card comes into play if law enforcement pulls you over or you have a car accident. It shows that your insurer has pledged to meet the minimum legal insurance requirements in Canada.
Travel car insurance FAQs
It’s important to secure sufficient coverage before you set out on a road trip if you don’t think your existing coverage is enough. The following information should answer your remaining questions about car travel insurance.
Does travel insurance cover vehicles?
It depends. A travel insurance policy usually protects you against costs associated with medical emergencies, issues with airfare and hotel bills, and lost or stolen personal property. Some travel insurance plans allow you to add car rental insurance to the plan for an additional cost.
Does personal car insurance cover a rental car when you’re traveling?
Yes. Your personal car insurance policy extends coverage to your rental car when you’re traveling in the U.S. Check the details of your policy or contact your insurer for more specific information.
How can you get insured to drive a car in any country?
A personal auto insurance policy from the U.S. won’t cover you abroad, except when you’re driving from the U.S. to Canada. But some companies sell global auto insurance policies that may work in one or more foreign countries.

Travel Cost Calculator
Quick links, trip pricing calculator.
Travelmath provides an online cost calculator to help you determine the cost of driving between cities. You can use this data to figure out a budget for a road trip. The driving calculation is based on the average fuel efficiency of your vehicle, and you can change the gas mileage in mpg or L/100 km to match your exact make and model. Gas prices are automatically estimated based on current fluctuations, and again you can adjust these to fit your local gas station prices. Both U.S. and international units are available to make the calculations easier to use, and the output is given for both one-way and round trip travel routes.
Check the driving distance for your planned route, and see if the total driving time requires an overnight stay. If it's a long trip, you may want to research some hotels along the way . Or compare whether it's better to fly or drive to your destination.

When to book travel insurance
September 24, 2024
To ensure you have coverage against cancellations and other insured events on your next overseas trip, consider purchasing travel insurance sooner rather than later.
The Australian government travel site Smarttraveller found that one in four Australian travellers experienced an insurable event on their last overseas trip. That's 25 per cent of Australian holidaymakers who could potentially lose money due to cancellations, theft and other incidents if they didn’t have the appropriate travel insurance.
Purchasing travel insurance early can help provide coverage for certain situations, such as trip cancellations, and reduce the financial impact of potential complications. Understanding the requirements of your destination country, the coverage options for your traveling party, and specific needs like electronics and travel documents will help ensure you have the appropriate coverage throughout your journey.

Timing your travel insurance purchase
When can i purchase travel insurance.
You have the flexibility to purchase travel insurance as soon as you book your trip, or even closer to your departure, depending on the type of coverage you need. Early purchase can help ensure that you have coverage from the moment you make your first payment towards your trip, for issues such as trip cancellations or interruptions that may occur before departure. It's important to read your travel insurance policy documents carefully to understand the different coverage options available and ensure they meet your specific needs.
That said, the more information you have about your trip, the easier it is to buy the coverage that best suits your needs. For example, are you going on an ocean cruise , hitting the ski slopes , or planning to drive overseas ? Knowing what you’ll be doing on holiday will help you choose suitable supplemental coverage.

Why consider purchasing travel insurance early?
Once you purchase the appropriate travel insurance, you may be covered for unexpected events in the lead-up to your holiday. For example, you may have to cancel your ski holiday due to a broken leg. Travel insurance may help reimburse non-refundable expenses.
Can I purchase travel insurance right before I leave?
You can purchase travel insurance up until you depart on your trip, although buying coverage when you make your bookings can offer additional benefits.
Policies bought closer to your departure date typically offer less coverage compared to those purchased well in advance. For instance, you might miss out on pre-existing condition coverage or have fewer options for trip cancellation and interruption benefits.
Moreover, you might face coverage gaps if an unforeseen event occurs shortly before your departure and you haven't bought insurance yet.

What if my travel plans change?
Travel plans can change throughout the planning process. Perhaps you want to add on a few more days or visit a different country.
If flexibility is a priority, consider a travel insurance provider that allows you to purchase coverage first and make changes to your policy, such as adjusting destinations or travel dates. However, be sure to review the terms and conditions, as the ability to make changes may vary.
Which countries require travel insurance?
Some countries have specific requirements regarding travel insurance. It's crucial to check the entry requirements of your destination country well in advance to ensure compliance. Failure to provide the necessary documentation could result in being denied entry.
For example, to obtain a visa to Europe’s Schengen Area countries, travellers must have valid travel insurance that covers the entire Schengen area, with a minimum cover of EUR 30,000 for medical treatment and repatriation.
Even if you don’t legally require travel insurance to enter a country, make sure your travel insurance policy covers every country that you intend to visit.
You should also check each country’s safety status on Smarttraveller , as your travel insurance policy won’t cover you for destinations marked ‘Do Not Travel’ by the Australian government.
Travel plans can change throughout the planning process, so choose an insurer that allows you to update your policy until you depart. Image: Getty
Does travel insurance cover my entire travelling party?
Travel insurance typically covers all individuals listed on the policy, but this can vary depending on the plan you choose. This can be more cost-effective than buying individual policies for each person.
It’s important to review the specifics of the policy to ensure that all members of your travelling party are covered. In addition, ensure that each traveller's details are accurately listed on the policy to avoid potential issues with claims.
RACV Travel Insurance automatically has cover for dependent(s), * so you can take your little ones on holiday with you. Simply add your dependent(s) travelling with you to your Certificate of Insurance.
Consider travel insurance before you embark on your holiday

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!
I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.
Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.
Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow
Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.
Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.
No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.
As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.
Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street
Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line
As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.
The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.
How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country
Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.
Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.
Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.
Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City
Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line
Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing
If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.
The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.
How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam
The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.
Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.
The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.
Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower
Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line
VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.
Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches
First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.
A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.
I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).
Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.
Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses
Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line
I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.
During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.
20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World
There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.
Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.
You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.
12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France
If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.
The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.
How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning
Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.
Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.
Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring
Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.
Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.
Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary
I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.
You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary
Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.
Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.
Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds
Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line
Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.
How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe
The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.
All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.
Conclusion and Recommendations
To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
