The Complete Guide to Sudhagad Fort Trek

➤ highlights.

The Sudhagad Fort Trek is technically a one-day trek, but stretching it to two, with overnight camping at the  wada  (old village house with a huge open space in the centre) will help you squeeze the best out of the trek. Also, covering the entire plateau takes around 2-3 hours, so it becomes a little exhausting if done as a single day trek.

Some of the places that can be visited around here are Takmaktok, Bhorai Devi temple and Maha Darwaja, apart from the numerous water bodies on top.

Sudhagad lies in Pali, which is centrally located, between Mumbai and Pune. It is just a few hours’ journeys from both these cities. The hill rises to a height of about 618 metres and is well-fortified by cliffs. There are staircases and ladders to navigate the steep patches en route. Due to its strategic position and strength, it was proposed as the capital of Hindavi Swaraj. However, after a survey of Raigad, Shivaji Maharaja chose the latter because of its central location.

➤  Trail Information

The origin of this fort dates back to the 2nd century BC, built-in around the same age as the Thanale Caves and Khadsamble caves nearby. It was then called Bhrorapgad (after its presiding deity, Bhorai Devi). The Bhorai Devi temple on top is said to have been built by Sage Bhrug Rishi. The rulers of the Bhor dynasty were worshippers of Bhorai Devi. In 1436, the fort was captured by the Bahamani Sultan. In 1657, the Marathas took over and renamed it Sudhagad, which means “the sweet fort.” In the regime of the Peshwas, the Pantsachivas of Bhor became the custodians of this fort. After the annexation of princely states in 1950, the fort became patron-less. As a result, the fort is in a state of ruins, even though it escaped the wrath of the British.

Day 1: Thakurwadi – Sudhagad Wada – Sudhagad Plateau

  • Distance: 8-10 km
  • Time took: 4-5 hours

You can see the massive walls of the Sudhagad fort right behind the temple at Thakurwadi village. Start walking in the direction of the fort. Spot a mud trail climbing up the ridge, right behind the village houses.

Lovely village side trail

Lovely village side trail

The trail is broad and well-marked. You will see paddy fields on your left and the Thakurwadi village below. In around 20 minutes, you begin to see the right edge of the fort. You have to take the trail that goes across the right ridge, where there is a ladder erected to negotiate the steep fort walls. As you climb up the ridge, you begin to see the Sagargad, another fort, towards the west. Continue on the trail for around 25 minutes till you see shrubs and trees on either side. As you climb, watch out for the sharp cliff of Takmaktok. Behind that, you can also see the Tailbaila plateau, along with the forts of Sudhagad and Ghanghad. As you march ahead, the path gets narrower and the jungle grows thicker. In around 20 minutes, the fort bastion and the ladder come into view at a distance. Walk towards the ladder, climb up and continue on the upper ridge. You will begin to see small rocks and boulders on the way. The trail has big trees towering on either side.

The trail ascends sharply

Watch out for an open space, which will appear in around 20 minutes. From here, the top bastion is visible. As you proceed, lookout for a huge rock staircase leading to the bastion (Pachhapur Darwaja). Climb up and continue on the trail until you come across a water tank. This tank will have water till late November or early December. The slopes are now green and gentle. If it is monsoon, watch out for a small waterfall and a stream on the way. The entire area is covered with wildflowers – pink, yellow and blue. You can also see the Amba river flowing down in the valley. It takes around 2 hours to reach the top. You will see a huge plateau at the top. There are white arrow marks painted onto rocks indicating the way. Follow these marks till you come across a lake on the left, with Tailbaila seen on the right. Keeping to the left of the plateau, walk till you spot a lotus pond.

Lotus Pond on the way

The entire area is a vast tabletop, flat land with several water bodies formed in monsoon. Green grass stretches out as far as the eye can see. If you walk further on the plateau, you’ll see a huge or a wada. It is a typical village house, with space open to the sky in the centre. You can rest in the wada and then explore the plateau. Camp overnight at the wada.

Day 2: Sudhagad – Mahadarwaja – Dhondase

  • Distance: 7-8 km
  • Time taken: 2 hours

Watch the sunrise from the plateau near the Bhorai Devi temple or Takmaktok. You can see the golden rays fall one by one on Ghanghad and adjoining mountain ranges.

Beautiful views of the valley

A good idea while getting down would be to take the trail through Mahadarwaja. It will take you to Dhondase village. Mahadarwaja is diametrically opposite to Pachhapur Darwaja in the north. From the wada, take the trail that goes left, towards the Bhorai Devi temple. Walk on the plateau for 5-10 minutes in the direction of Tailbaila. The trail enters thickets within ten minutes and gradually descends. Continue on the trail until you spot the walls of the fort. In a few minutes, you’ll come across a huge gate/door, called the Dindi Darwaja, which is a replica of Mahadarwaja at Raigad fort. The door is well protected since it is hidden in between two huge bastions. Walkthrough the door and continue to climb down the huge staircase. You can also visit the Chor Darwaja, which means “thief entrance;” it is a secret entrance. There is a very small opening to pass through this secret passage through a deep trench. It takes you to the other side of the wall.

sudhagad trek time

If you have skipped the Chor Darwaja, continue to move down the fort stairs. After 15 minutes of descent, you’ll enter forests with trees and shrubs. Another half-hour lake, lookout for a small stream. You will have to ford the stream and stay on the trail until you reach Dhondase village. It takes around 2 hours to reach Dhondase village from the top. From here, you can take a vehicle back to Pali and then proceed towards Mumbai / Pune. The range is huge and there are many options and trails to be explored around here.

1) Sudhagad – Tailbaila – Ghanghad – Korigad: Descend Sudhagad from Maha Darwaja on the Dhondase route. Continue towards Savashni ghat route to reach Tailbaila walls, and further towards Bhamburde village, which is the base of Ghanghad fort. From Tailbaila, one can also go towards Korigad and proceed towards Lonavala.

2) Sudhagad – Thanale caves – Tailbaila: Descend Sudhagad from Maha Darwaja on the Dhondase route and reach Nadsur village, from where you can walk to Thanale caves and proceed to Tailbaila.

➤  How much fitness do you need for the Sudhagad Fort trek?

Cardiovascular endurance

The secret to ascending any trail lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging everyday. Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace everyday. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too.

This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and in your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set. Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your work out.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises – stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek.

Working out indoors If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

➤  What to Take on Your Trek

sudhagad trek time

No, stuffing it all in isn’t the right way to do it  Packing a backpack correctly saves precious time that you might waste trying to find your things later. It is wise to spend some time learning what goes into packing a backpack.

What should I pack?  On a trek, you only get what you take. Something as simple as a forgotten matchbox can cripple your cooking plans throughout the trek. So, it’s essential to prepare early and prepare well. To begin with, make a checklist. While shopping, remember this thumb rule – keep it light. “Every item needs to be light. This ensures that your backpack, on the whole, stays light,” says Sandhya UC, co-founder of Indiahikes. Balancing out heavy items with light ones isn’t going to have the same effect as having all light items. “Always opt for good quality, light items,” says Sandhya.

How to pack  The thumb rule for this one is to eliminate air spaces. Make sure that everything is packed tightly, especially clothes and jackets, as they tend to take up maximum air space. Put in all the large items first. Then squeeze in the smaller ones in the gaps. This ensures minimum air space. A good way to pack clothes is by using the Ranger Roll method.

It's wonderful that you were careful with your planning. That stinks about the road condition making the roads a little hard to navigate at some points. We have that here too and it makes it hard on bike riders. But good road conditions matter.

Whoa! Just looking at that view from the top of the stairs is enough to make me want to hurl. I'm so scared of heights.

Also known as Bhorapgad, this fort is highly recommended for beginners. Trek route is quite easy to follow.

How would you rate this place on a scale of 1-5? Vote Below!

  • Winter Treks near Pune
  • Night Treks Near Pune

Route : One has to head towards Khopoli which is a bit ahead of Lonavala. From Khopoli you can ask the locals for directions to Pali or use google maps to get there. Trek Route: There are 2 base villages from where you can start the actual trek. One is via Pacchapur(Thakurwadi) village and the other is via Dhondse village. During all our trips, we've gone via the Thakurwadi route which is said to be relatively easy than the Dhonse route. Thakurwadi is around 12 kilometres from Pali. If you are a beginner you can always hire a guide from the base village to help you with the trek route.

Difficulty level and other tips : This is a simple trek and requires less stamina than other forts in the vicinity. But always ensure that you carry plenty of water with you and something you can munch on in case you are hungry.

What to see at Sudhagad:

  • Big Entrance of the fort
  • Secret Escape Route
  • View of surrounding Valleys and mountains
  • Stairs and some ruins

Camping and overnight stay : Camping can be done if you are planning to couple your trek with Sarasgad fort. Otherwise it does not make a lot of sense to camp at Sudhagad. There are caves which can be used as a shelter. But it is always recommended that you carry your own tents. Carry some ready to cook food that can be made at night on a bonfire. Also ensure that for overnight trek you carry plenty of water, at least 4 litres per person. The villages surrounding the fort are quite remote and hence we recommend that you carry water and food from the city itself.

A night escape to sudhagad -ultimate summer trek experience

Photo of sameer bhalerao

Hiee to readers out there I am out with new experience, this time more thrilling more exciting . This time  I am with a brand new adventure of trekking at night. As usual me and my buddies were in search of new escape and we found an event by WTA (Wild trek adventures) from pune were conducting a night trek to sudhagad and without losing a second we registered to the event and packed our bags.

THE JOURNEY:- we started from kalyan towards khopoli at around 3:30pm and reached khopoli station at around 4:45-5:00pm from khopoli there was pickup by WTA we got up at the bus and from there we headed towards the base village Thakurwadi, we reached the base village in nearly 1hour 45 mins around 8:30 pm we started our trek.

THE TREK:- This is the moment where the real adventure starts lot of things going in my mind "trek at night", "never done before" excited plus nervous both feelings together and with all things in mind we started, slowly and gradually trek started becoming more difficult (not extremely difficult) instead I say more tiring due to summer, crossing the jungle at night is completely an different experience, a pin drop silence makes thing more thrilling, every next second I get the feeling that something might pop out of the shrubs and scare the shit out of me (fortunately nothing happened) trekking half of the fort I looked back at the base village which was looking miles away from there and suddenly you feel you are more closer to mother nature and getting more closer with every step you take ,being in such a place with almost no human existence is such a feeling after a lot more of endurance of 2:30hrs we reached the summit and the fiercely blowing wind over the top of the fort which is the perfect example of pure air not just refresh your mind but refresh your soul too, I filled as much as air I can in my lungs and headed forward to pantsachivancha wada now this is an old house over the fort in which family of the priest of bhorai devi temple stays the provide everything like breakfast dinner mostly people with over night stay visit, we finally reached the wada we had food made by the family, food was nice after dinner we moved out of the and at some  distance from the wada over the plateau and tents were setup at this place at the middle campfire was blown

TAKAMK TOK: Death cliff used for death penalty

at 10:00 am we stared to descend and reached to the base very quickly. we then started reverse journey towards khopoli station.

Sudhagad is one of the ancient forts in Sahyadri. It was the glory of Bhor state. Initially, Sudhagad was called as ‘Bhorapgad’. During empire of Shivaji Maharaj this fort was named as Sudhagad. This fort is approximately 590 meters in height. Sudhagad is a huge fort. It is called as the replica of Raigad. History : The ‘Thanale’ excavations in this area are nearly 2200 years old. This shows that Sudhagad may be that much ancient. The construction and the geographical significance indicate that some great rulers might have constructed the fort. According to the Puranas, Sage ‘Bhrugu’ had stayed here and he had established the temple of Goddess ‘Bhorai’ on this fort. Sudhagad was included in ‘Swarajya’ in 1648. It is described in old records as follows: “Malavji Naik Karake put the ladders in Sakharadara. Initially, Jadhav and Saranayak both climbed the fort under the guidance of chieftain ‘Maloji Bhosale’. After that Haibatrao climbed the fort. 25 soldiers went ahead and killed the guards. Further the chief of the fort was killed in anguish and the fort was conquered.” Shivaji Maharaj renamed Bhorapgad as Sudhagad. Later Sambhaji Maharaj met Akbar (the rebellious son of Aurangjeb) in the ‘Pachchapur village’ situated at the base of this fort. Annaji Datto, Balaji Aavji Chitnis, his son Aavji Ballal and Hiroji Pharjand were all important persons in ‘Ashta-Pradhan Mandal’ of Shivaji Maharaj. Sambhaji Maharaj has killed all of them in ‘Parli’ village near Sudhagad.

Fascinating Spots :

The perimeter of this fort is quite big. There are many lakes on the fort. There is a palace of Pant Sachiv on the fort, where 50 people can stay comfortably. Also there is a temple of Bhorai Devi, where 25-30 persons can be accommodated. Different kind of medicinal plants and trees can be seen in the surrounding forest.

Bhoreshwar temple : There is temple of ‘Bhoreshwar’ near the palace. If we move further, we can see a well with a secret door. There are steps from palace to the ‘Bhorai Devi’ temple. If we descend towards the other route, it takes us to water cisterns, which hold good drinking water. The route on the left side of these cisterns takes us towards a secret door. But this route doesn’t exist now.

Pachchapur Darwaaja : If we enter to the hill through this door, we come across a plateau after climbing some distance. To the left is the temple of ‘Siddheshwar’, storehouses of food grains, some cisterns, a lake named “Hawaldar Tale” and “Hattimaal”. On the right hand side we can see natural fortification of the fort.

Takmak Tok of Sudhagad : After leaving the palace come up with the steps and turn to right hand side of the route. This route goes through ‘Hatti Paga’ (place where elephants were tied). It directly takes us to one peak. This peak is very similar to the cliff “Takmak Tok” on Raigad. From this peak Dhangad, Korigad, Tel-Baila can be seen very clearly. Similarly river ‘Amba’ and the villages surrounding it can be seen from this place.

Dindi Darwaaja : The way from Ghat of Sawashni takes us directly to Dindi Darwaaja. This door is exact replica of the ‘Mahadarwaaja’ (main entrance) on Raigad. The construction and arrangement of this door is of the type called “Gomukhi” (in shape of cow’s mouth). This door is well protected since it is hidden in between two huge bastions. There is one secret path well on the fort at the backside of the palace. It has one tunnel in it, but now it is dumped by mud. There is also a secret path to move down from fort in case of any difficulty. There are some tombs at the backside of the Bhorai Devi temple. We can find beautiful carvings on them.

About Sudhagad Trek

Sudhagad / Bhorapgad is a hill fort situated in Maharashtra , India . The origin of this fort is said to date back to the 2nd century B.C the same age as the Thanale Caves and Khadsamble caves nearby. It was then called Bhrorapgad (after its presiding deity, Bhoraidevi). In 1436, it was captured by the Bahamani Sultan. In 1657, the Marathas took over and renamed it “Sudhagad” ( the sweet one ). It was a large fort and Sudhagad was considered by chatrapati Shivaji maharaj as the capital of his kingdom. He surveyed it, but instead chose Raigad because of its central location.

In the regime of the Peshwas , the ‘Pantsachivas’ of Bhor became the custodians of this fort. After the annexation of princely states in 1950 the fort became patron less. As a result, the fort is in a state of ruins, even though it escaped the wrath of the British.

When you have William Shatner , aka Captain James T. Kirk, on your show, you get to ask the Star Trek questions you’ve always wanted answered.

That’s what Bill Maher managed to do on Friday’s Real Time , as he probed one of pop culture’s most interesting moments — the interracial kiss between Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura.

Bill Maher Rounds Up The Usual Suspects In 'Real Time' Focus On Phones And Woke

Bill maher to launch podcast network, sage steele to host first show.

Maher also marveled how far Shatner fell from grace after the first run of Star Trek was canceled after three seasons. Shatner talked about watching the actual moon landing from a pasture while in his truck, his base of operations after a divorce and a lull in work.

How did you fall so fast? Maher asked. “With great precision,” Shatner joked, adding that it was just “circumstances of life.”

Of course, those days are gone for Shatner. He is the subject of the new documentary,  You Can Call Me Bill, and the artist behind the upcoming digital album, So Fragile, So Blue, which he recorded live with the National Symphony Orchestra.

He’s also planning a trip to Antarctica, another of his efforts to explore and spotlight his efforts in climate change.

Of the latter, “There’s no way out except through technology,” Shatner said. “There’s a wave coming.” It’s one reason he may consider once again going into space, he said, as a way to “promulgate the idea that there’s so much going on by science and scientists to correct global warming.” He added, “There’s an element of hope I will cling to.”

Maher wrapped up the segment with a mention of Shatner’s age (93) and compliments on how well he looks.

“I don’t mind when you say my age,” Shatner said. “But when they clap…”

After Shatner, Maher had a panel discussion with Piers Morgan ,  New York Post  columnist and host of the YouTube channel’s P iers Morgan Uncensored , and  Gillian Tett , provost of King’s College, Cambridge, and columnist at the  Financial Times .

They also talked about a protest in Dearborn Michigan that featured chants of “Death to America.” Maher pushed back on those at the protest who said, “The entire system has to go.”

“No, it doesn’t,” Maher countered. “I like our system. I’ve always liked America and thought death to it was bad.”

In Maher’s “New Rules” editorial, he pointed out the falsehoods about Canada and some progressive European countries where the idyllic myth doesn’t jibe with reality, resulting in what Maher termed “zombie lies.”

Maher pointed out several ways that these countries are faring worse in housing, health care, and on immigration issues

“I need to cite you as a cautionary tale: yes, you can move too far left, and you push others to the extreme right,” he said. “Calling something racist doesn’t solve the problem,” Maher said. That opens the door to someone conservative who will act, and “Who I promise, you’re not going to like.”

Calling back to a single 30-year-old episode of television is a time-honored Star Trek tradition , one that’s led the franchise to some of its most fascinating detours. And in its two-episode season premiere, Star Trek: Discovery seems to be kicking off an entire season calling back to one particular episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

And not just any episode! The 1993 installment of Next Gen in question delivered a revelation so seemingly earth-shaking that it should have rewritten galactic politics on a massive scale. But then, as was the way in the 1990s era of episodic TV, nobody ever mentioned it again.

At least until now.

[ Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.]

L-R Elias Toufexis as L’ak — a green-skinned alien hefting a futuristic shotgun — and Eve Harlow as Moll — a more human figure with dyed grey hair and a pistol — point their guns at something on the ground in Star Trek: Discovery.

Writer Michelle Paradise and director Olatunde Osunsanmi lay out the connection at the end of the first of two episodes released this week, “Red Directive.” Discovery’s mission is to follow a series of ancient clues leading to a cache of ancient technology, and to get there before a couple of professional thieves, Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis), do.

The technology, as Doctor Kovich (David Cronenberg) explains, belongs to the so-called Progenitors, a barely understood ancient spacefaring species that “created life as we know it […] every humanoid species in the galaxy.” Presumably such tech holds the key to understanding how the Progenitors did that, and how that power could be used again.

The Progenitors are from the Star Trek episode “The Chase”

Kovich also calls up a helpful video presentation of the moment the Progenitors were discovered by an assembled group of Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Cardassian captains, including Jean-Luc Picard. But you don’t have to be a Star Trek lore nerd to know you’re actually just looking at clips from an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Specifically, from the 20th episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation ’s sixth season, “The Chase,” in which Picard and crew discover pieces of a computer program hidden inside the DNA of species from dozens of different planets. Questions abound: What does the program do? And what kind of entity could have been so ancient and powerful that it had determined the genetic legacy of most of the known galaxy before sentient life had even evolved here — and then left no trace of its existence except the genetic codes themselves?

In a nutshell, the mysterious death of Captain Picard’s old archeology professor (did you know that if he hadn’t gone into Starfleet, Jean-Luc was studying to be a space archeologist? Well, now you do) sets the captain and the Enterprise on a search for the missing DNA fragments necessary to complete his unfinished work.

The Progenitor hologram appears before a group of Romulan, Klingon, Cardassian, and Starfleet captains and crewmembers in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The action of the episode becomes a grand chase, as Klingon and Cardassian captains come to believe the program must be a great weapon or dangerous secret. Eventually Picard and his rivals all discover the lonely planet with the final DNA strain — and when they get there, some Romulans who’ve been secretly following all of them show up, too, just to make things even more tense.

In the end, the program isn’t a weapon or a secret, but a message from an ancient race of humanoids that apparently created sentient life in our galaxy as we know it.

Actor Salome Jens appears as a Progenitor hologram, and delivers a speech that’s stirring by any standard of Star Trek monologues, telling the story of a race of sentients that took to the stars and found them empty. They had evolved too early to meet other forms of sentient life, and knew that their time was too limited to ever expect to.

“We knew that one day we would be gone; that nothing of us would survive, so we left you,” Jens’ Progenitor explains. The Progenitors seeded humanoid life across the galaxy in their own image; life that tended to evolve into bipedal, tailless, largely hairless creatures with two eyes and two arms and five fingers on each hand. And they left clues in the genetic signature of their work, broken up among the stars.

Wait, was this really all about lampshading the limits of Star Trek’s alien design?

Salome Jens as a Progenitor hologram in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Chase.” Jens is under heavy makeup as a slightly androgenous alien in a white robe, with deep set eyes, small ears, a bald head, and mottled pink-brown skin.

Kinda, yes! The writers of “The Chase,” Ron Moore and Joe Menosky, were inspired by elements of Carl Sagan’s Contact , but also by Menosky’s pet fascination creating an in-universe explanation for why all the common alien species in Star Trek are basically shaped like humans (albeit with latex on their faces).

In other hands, it would be hokey and trite, but even under heavy makeup, Jens sells the hell out of her single scene on voice and stance alone — it’s no wonder she was asked back to the Trek fold to play a major antagonist role in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

“It was our hope that you would have to come together in fellowship and companionship to hear this message, and if you can see and hear me, our hope has been fulfilled,” the Progenitor hologram concludes, with gentle compassion. “You are a monument, not to our greatness, but to our existence. That was our wish: That you, too, would know life. [...] There is something of us in each of you, and so something of you in each other.”

But though “The Chase” carried a sweeping revelation, nothing ever really panned out from it. You’d think that a message of togetherness that fundamentally rewrote the origin of life in the universe would have to have tweaked Star Trek’s galactic politics a bit, right? Seems like this would give the Star Trek setting a radically different understanding of the origins of life than we have in the real world — this is literally intelligent design! At the very least there’d be some other characters talking about how humans and Vulcans, Klingons and Romulans and Ferengi and Cardassians and Trill and Bajorans, all share the same genetic ancestor.

But nope: The Pandora’s box of Progenitor lore remained closed. Gene Roddenberry’s successor and Trek producer Rick Berman seems to have been disenchanted with the episode’s reveal — and you can’t really blame him for not wanting to rock the whole cosmology of Star Trek in an episode that’s mostly about explaining how if you turn the DNA snippets like this they make a cool spiral. Now look at this computer screen with the spiral :

A futuristic computer screen on the USS Enterprise shows a blocky, incomplete spiral in neon green lines.

Except now, Star Trek: Discovery is opening the box and rocking the boat. This new mad, puzzle-box chase around the galaxy promises to expand on the Progenitors, an idea so big that not even The Next Generation was willing to touch it. It’s a tall order, but Discovery has never been more free to shake up Star Trek continuity than it is right now — we’ll have to wait for more episodes of the show’s final season to find out how free it intends to be.

Star Trek: Discovery is finally free to do whatever it wants

William Shatner

William Shatner took a moment on Real Time Friday to reflect on living boldly throughout his acting career.

The Star Trek star, who has hundreds of credits to his name, was asked by host Bill Maher if his outgoing personality was shaped by his character Captain James T. Kirk or if the show thought he was already a “boldly going guy” when he auditioned for the legendary role.

Related Stories

'star trek: lower decks' to end with season 5, billy dee williams says actors should be allowed to wear blackface.

He continued, “The fact that Star Trek became a showbiz phenomenon that lasted, what, 60 years? And there’s all these other shows and all these other actors. Who knew? Nobody knew.”

In 1966, Capt. Kirk was Shatner’s breakout role in Hollywood, although the series was canceled after just three seasons. But it ended up scoring a cult following in syndication, leading the actor to reprise the beloved role in seven feature films.

However, the Boston Legal alum has previously been open about going broke after the Star Trek show was initially canceled by NBC, forcing him to learn to roll with the punches. And following a decades-long career, it’s safe to say he’s learned a thing or two, so also during his conversation with Maher, he shared some wise words with the host about living life to the fullest as the future is unpredictable.

“[You] don’t know anything. You’re gonna step out of the studio after the show, you don’t know that a car isn’t gonna hit you,” Shatner explained, drawing laughter from the audience at the timing of his comments. “Or a bus or some big guy who says you’ve said enough, bang, right on the head. You don’t know the future. The future is unheralded.”

Last month, Shatner got candid with The Hollywood Reporter about his “growing realization that all the plans you have for your life are dependent on the guy driving a car behind you or in front of you.”

He added at the time, “You may think you’re like, ‘I’m going to control. I’m going to choose that motion picture,’ or go onstage choosing elements of your career, thinking you’re making a career move. It has nothing to do with reality at all.”

See how the eclipse transformed America, city by city

Washington Post staff photo

For weeks, if not months, those who have seen one repeated to anyone who would listen: There’s nothing like experiencing the totality of a solar eclipse.

For some of them, this was a second time in six and a half years experiencing the eerie calm when the moon passes in front of the sun, at least for a few minutes. And yet, they were just as awestruck.

For others, it was a likely last opportunity to witness such a celestial phenomenon for two decades. It inspired gasps and smiles, solemnity and excitement.

Here is how it looked as the moon’s shadow crossed three countries and 13 U.S. states, with the time of totality in Eastern time.

El Salto, MX

2:10 — 2:14 p.m.

Uvalde, tex., 2:29 — 2:33 p.m., russellville, ark., 2:50 — 2:54 p.m., carbondale, ill., 2:59 — 3:03 p.m., bloomington, ind., 3:04 — 3:08 p.m., tiffin, ohio, 3:11 — 3:15 p.m., littleton, maine, 3:32 — 3:35 p.m..

Time of totality

El salto, mexico.

A group of professors and students traveled from the United States to El Salto to conduct the most thorough experiment ever using an eclipse to test Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Einstein’s idea held that the massive sun would bend the light of surrounding stars more than previously estimated, proving that matter can pull and warp space and time.

The researchers used five telescopes to measure that effect more closely than ever, measuring stars that appear so close to the sun’s edge they can only be viewed during an eclipse.

After a countdown in Spanish, the sun darkened, and the data collection began. “TOTALITY,” yelled Sam Jeffe, a third-year physics major at Willamette University as it appeared in the telescopes’ lenses. “And it’s clear!”

Researchers will feed the data into the computer program, which will analyze the position of the stars and determine how the sun bent the light around them. But, for now, more than half the battle was done.

sudhagad trek time

2:27 — 2:31 p.m.

Eagle pass, tex..

On U.S. soil, totality first came into view in the border city of Eagle Pass, Tex., where a crowd gathered at a football field erupted into cheers as the skies darkened above them.

A singer crooned, “I’m walking on sunshine!” People put on protective glasses and craned their necks toward the sky. Many began to clap.

Vita Garza Flores, 76, traveled from Northern California to see the eclipse in the city where she was born. She brought her daughter and brother along with her.

She grabbed her eclipse glasses, positioning them across her sunglasses: “Wow!”

sudhagad trek time

Students from Uvalde High School were also among the citizen scientists using the eclipse to learn more about the sun and its effects on Earth.

They joined Southwest Texas Junior College’s STEM club in participating in a program known as the Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse. Called Citizen CATE, it will combine short videos of the eclipse taken via telescope into an hour-long movie that NASA says will detail magnetic structure within the sun’s corona and reveal its density. That will help scientists to measure the strength of the solar wind — charged particles that can disrupt electricity grids and produce auroras when they reach Earth.

sudhagad trek time

In Russellville, NASA gathered scientists and broadcast the eclipse’s progress live online. Tourists gathered there, too, wearing T-shirts that declared, “I got mooned at the eclipse.”

A jazz band from Arkansas Tech University played. NASA hosted workshops and Q&A sessions with scientists, at least one of whom has been to space: Among the visitors were Mike Massimino, a veteran of NASA space flight missions to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002 and 2009.

sudhagad trek time

Carbondale, Ill., earned the title of “eclipse crossroads of America,” having fallen in the path of totality for a 2017 solar eclipse as well as the event on Monday. This time, at least, the skies were clear for totality, and a full stadium of eclipse fans burst into collective screams when the moment came.

“This is so much better than 2017,” a one commentator on NASA’s live broadcast noted. “It’s so much darker than 2017.”

sudhagad trek time

To many of those who experienced it, the eclipse was a spiritual event. In Bloomington, Buddhist monks marked it with a puja ceremony, a “ritual honoring and promoting inner and planetary healing,” according to the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center.

Eclipse watchers flocked to Yellowwood Lake where they could experience the eclipse in nature.

sudhagad trek time

When the last pulses of the sun’s rays make their way to Earth before an eclipse enters totality, they appear like a brilliant diamond set on a golden ring. In Tiffin, that meant a chance for some “unforgettable” weddings at an event called “Elope at the Eclipse.”

sudhagad trek time

3:18 — 3:21 p.m.

Niagara falls, n.y..

Crowds flocked to landmarks across the path of totality for a memorable view. At Niagara Falls, despite a thick blanket of clouds, people gathered on the banks of the Niagara River and trained their phone cameras toward the sky. Streetlights turned on, if only briefly, when darkness descended.

sudhagad trek time

The moon’s shadow reached North America at the beaches of Mazatlan, Mexico, just after 2:07 p.m. Eastern time. Just about 90 minutes later, it crossed the wilderness of northern Maine, on its way toward Canada, and then, the North Atlantic.

A total solar eclipse will next dim communities in the contiguous United States in 2044, but only in parts of Montana and the Dakotas. The country will have to wait one more year for the next coast-to-coast phenomenon, a total eclipse that will stretch from California to Florida on Aug. 12, 2045. It will be a Saturday.

A Star Trek Origin Movie Is Coming in 2025 From 'Andor' and 'Doctor Who' Director Toby Haynes

'Star Trek' (2009) director J.J. Abrams is attached to produce.

The Big Picture

  • A new Star Trek prequel film, an "origin story", is in development, at Paramount.
  • The Star Trek history before Kirk's missions on the Enterprise is largely unwritten, leaving room for creativity with the new film.
  • Director Toby Haynes, known for Andor , is working on the film alongside writer Seth Grahame-Smith; a 2025 release window was announced at CinemaCon.

Star Trek may finally be coming back to the big screen. A prequel to the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot of the franchise is in the works from director Toby Haynes . The news comes from Paramount's presentation at CinemaCon today, as reported by Collider's Steve Weintraub and Britta DeVore . With Haynes, who recently helmed six episodes of the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor , at the rudder, the film will be written by Seth Grahame-Smith .

So far, other details on the new film are scarce, but it will reportedly be an "origin story", taking place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film, which took place in 2255. That likely means that it will not feature the cast from the 2009 reboot, which has so far been difficult for Paramount to wrangle together for a fourth film, despite numerous attempts to do so . That doesn't necessarily mean that a fourth movie isn't happening: back in March, Paramount hired The Flight Attendant scribe Steve Yockey to pen a new script for the film. For their part, the cast is game as well, with Zoe Saldaña recently stating her willingness to return for a fourth mission on the USS Enterprise .

What Happened Decades Before Kirk's First Missions on the Enterprise?

The history of the Star Trek universe prior to the celebrated voyages of the Enterprise is largely unwritten. The first starship Enterprise 's adventures in the 22nd century were chronicled on the UPN prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise . That series ended with the founding of the United Federation of Planets in 2161, which leaves almost a century of mostly unexplored history between that and the history now being charted on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (and the first two seasons of mothership show Star Trek: Discovery ).

At some point, the nascent Federation faces a devastating war against the Romulan Star Empire , while also engaged in a Cold War with the Klingons. The USS Enterprise will eventually be launched in the 23rd century, under the captaincy of Robert April, who has been briefly glimpsed on Star Trek: The Animated Series and Strange New Worlds , before being handed off to Christopher Pike . Apart from that, however, Haynes and Graeme-Smith have a near-blank canvas upon which to make their mark.

In addition to Andor , Haynes has also helmed episodes of Doctor Who , Sherlock , and Black Mirror ; his work on the latter series includes the episode " USS Callister ," a loving pastiche of Star Trek . Graeme-Smith wrote the novels Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter ; he worked on the story for the upcoming horror comedy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice .

A new Star Trek prequel film is in development; no date has yet been set beyond a 2025 release window . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
