Cycling & Walking Holidays

Peak Tours was established by Steve Coackley in 2006. Born and bred in the High Peak or Dark Peak area of the Peak District Steve has walked and cycled extensively throughout the Peak District for many years. Prior to setting up Peak Tours Steve cycled around the world on an unsupported trip along with three friends from Scotland, China & Australia. The journey took Steve through Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, USA & Ireland covering 12,700 miles in eight months. All travel by land was by bike and the group carried everything they needed to be self sufficient. Apart from getting arrested in the Xinjang autonomous region of Western China on suspicion of being spies the tour was generally trouble free. On returning home Steve left his career in finance to work as a tour leader for the adventure travel company Explore Worldwide, leading walking & cycling tours in Turkey, China, India, Poland, Ukraine, Macedonia, Greece, Finland & Bulgaria.

After working as a ‘one man band’ for many years Steve soon realised that he needed help with the running of the business and also needed more and more guides to lead the tours. Now with three full time staff and over thirty guides, Peak Tours continues to grow and there are many new tours in the pipeline so watch this space!

The other end-to-end

Whilst most people have heard of the Lands End to John O'Groats route not many people have heard of the Dover to Durness route. So what about the opposite two corners? This sensational tour takes in some of the best cycling the British Isles has to offer, including the Kentish Downs; Rutland; the Peak District; The Yorkshire Dales and the unbelievably beautiful islands and coastline of the Western Highlands.

Have we whet your appetite? The Dover to Durness cycle tour starts in the South East of England and takes in the quiet country lanes of The Kentish Hills and Cambridgeshire. We then head through Rutland, the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales to Penrith and then on to the pretty village of Thornhill in Scotland before we take in the west coast of Scotland and also the beautiful islands of Arran, Mull and Skye before we reach the village of Durness, at the North Western tip of mainland UK.

Munich to Rome

    Austria ,   Germany &   Italy

  14   days   (Bike: 12 days)

  840   mi   (~ 70 mi  per day)

Cycling in Germany, Austria and Italy conjures up a myriad of thoughts and ideas

The lush valleys, lakes and mountains of the Tyrolean north; the romance and old world charm of regions like Tuscany and Chianti; the sheer cultural heritage of the beautiful medieval walled towns; lazy lunches, great food, history, architecture, wine and company, oh and a spot of cycling too. Perfect!

Starting from Munich, Bavaria’s ancestral home, we venture southwards past the well heeled residents of beautiful Lake Starnberg towards the Austrian border. We encounter jaw-dropping scenery in Austria and also cycle into Switzerland very briefly before crossing the border into Italy. We will use parts of the sublime “Via Augusta” cycle route marked in particular by a giggle inducing descent to Merano which will have you feeling like a kid again! From here we continue to the mighty Lake Garda and romantic Verona before arriving at the historic city of Mantova. A welcome flat day across the Po plain takes us to the Appenini mountains and on into Tuscany where we have a well earned rest day in the stunning medieval walled city of Siena. More stunning views and classic Italian towns such as the “Tufa Towns” of Pitigliano and Sorano and villages await as we continue to the final destination of Rome, where you may wish to spend an extra day or two exploring this magnificent city.

Italy is a hilly country and there are a number of climbs throughout this tour as we cross Tyrolean valleys, traverse the Appennini mountains and Tuscan hills with a number of stunning but challenging days riding. The tour is comparable to our Lands End to John O’ Groats tour in terms of difficulty (actually a little harder) although we do have a rest day in Siena which is a great place to explore and rest your legs.

The ‘Munich to Rome’ tour will be undertaken over twelve days cycling with an arrival and departure day either side. We aim to keep away from busy roads wherever possible. The tour encompasses some of these countries most spectacular countryside and exhilarating cycling. It should be noted that the road surfaces in Italy aren’t as good as in France so a minimum of 25mm tyres is recommended with hard wearing tread. Also, on the tour, there are a few sections (never usually more than a few hundred metres) that are compacted gravel. Riding on it is not as bad as it sounds really but the utilisation of these sections have been essential to the overall quality of the route, as they have enabled us to keep the route safe, scenic and enjoyable as opposed to being forced onto dangerous sections of road.

Italy can also get very hot during the summer which is why we choose slightly cooler months when the temperatures should be in the 20’s (as opposed to the 30’s – 40’s in the height of the summer.

Lands End to John O'Groats Cycle Tour

  16   days   (Bike: 14 days)

  1000   mi   (~ 71 mi  per day)

The LEJOG conjures up a variety of images, an escapade, a challenge, hard work, a puncture or two, stunning scenery, and a tremendous sense of achievement

Since the 1960’s the End to End has become a firm favourite with the British people. Every year, walkers, cyclists, joggers and runners navigate the length of the British Isles.

Experience tells us that the best way to traverse the length of the country; is from the southwest to the northeast. The rationale behind this choice revolves around wind and transport. The prevailing wind blows from the southwest and the transport connections work best when returning from the northeast of Scotland.

The LEJOG route we will be taking is undertaken over 14 days and we aim to keep away from busy roads wherever possible. It encompasses some of the United Kingdom’s most spectacular countryside and exhilarating cycling.

Whilst emphasis is always on safety we aim to provide a relaxed approach to cycle touring and wish to facilitate a fun and enjoyable tour with many laughs and memorable moments along the way.

Channel to the Med Challenge

  11   days   (Bike: 10 days)

  840   mi   (~ 84 mi  per day)

Cycle challenge 'extraordinaire', the 10 Day Channel to the Med cycling holiday in France from one end of this beautiful country to the other

Starting from the northern French coast at Ouistreham close to the port town of Caen we continue southwards to finish the tour near Nice on the Mediterranean coastline 10 days later.

So, Why France? France is a wide and diverse country which contains a variety of different and stunning landscapes. France is also only one quarter as densely populated as the UK and much more rural so the roads are quieter and cyclists are treated with a good general level of respect.

Most people have heard of the Tour de France and the country can arguably be considered the cultural home of cycling. We will cycle through some of the iconic landscapes that you may have seen whilst watching “The Tour” and most notably we will take in the unforgettable Mont Ventoux and Gorge de Verdon en-route to Nice. France enjoys much better weather than the UK so chances of a dry and sunny tour are much more likely than if tackling LEJOG although it must also be noted that it can get very hot in the summer months, especially in the south.

France is also well known for it’s gastronomy and also fine wines and we will do our best to ensure that you sample plenty of the delights on offer. Added to that a rich culture, medieval villages and stunning architecture, all of which makes France an ideal place for a long distance cycle tour. Covering the country from the English Channel to the Mediterranean enables you to visit many of Frances most beautiful and interesting places.

Highland 500

  9   days   (Bike: 7 days)

  470   mi   (~ 67 mi  per day)

Welcome to Peak Tour's very own version of the North Coast 500

Our stunning new cycling tour of the Highlands of Scotland. Over the course of 7 days, we will cycle from Inverness over to the inimitable west coast of Scotland and back round to the east for some truly magical cycling. For those that love a challenge we have built into the tour the holy grail of UK ascents “Bealach na Ba” the UK’s greatest ascent of any road in the country. This beast of a climb is not for the fainthearted and there is no tougher or more rewarding climb in the whole of the UK! Fortunately for us there is an equally impressive, equally spectacular, shorter, easier route round it if you wish to avoid it. There are different route options on some of the days on the Highland 500 to satisfy both ends of the cycling spectrum, so two people of differing abilities will get the same amount of enjoyment from the same tour. There are a number of challenging hills on this tour and as always you will benefit from a good amount of training before the trip but it is possible to make the tour easier or harder at times according to your preference. Scotland is home to some of the most incredible cycling the UK has to offer. We start by heading west from Inverness for a fairly easy ride out to lovely Loch Carron then on to the splendid isolation of Kinlochewe, taking in either the legendary “Bealach na Ba” or the easier route to timeless Shieldaig. Winding our way up this majestic coastline we stay at the vibrant town of Ullapool and wild, remote Durness before heading back over to the eastern coast where we finish our journey back at Inverness. White sandy beaches and crystal clear waters abound, not to mention the abundant wildlife and sweeping vistas of the Scottish highlands make this tour a truly amazing experience.

A Week in Provence

  8   days   (Bike: 6 days)

  362   mi   (~ 60 mi  per day)

Provence, with it's wonderfully mild climate, stunning scenery, ancient hilltop villages, fantastic food and superb wine, it makes a perfect place for a relaxing cycling holiday.

This week long tour has been designed to take in many of Provence’s highlights whilst also allowing time for relaxation and exploration if desired. With arrival on Saturday at Marseille airport we then transfer to the world cultural heritage city of Arles in the south west of Provence. Well known for it’s well preserved Roman amphitheatre and also where Van Gogh painted many of his famous paintings, Arles is a lovely little city to start our tour. Venturing north the route continues to the jewel in Provence’s crown, Avignon, where we spend two nights. The route to Avignon is only 45 miles and for those who would like more cycling we have an extra ride out to the Roman aqueduct at the Pont Du Gard. Our second day in Avignon sees us cycling north alongside the river Rhone deep into wine country and the area known as the Vaucluse with the vineyards of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and there are many options for shorter or longer rides depending on your preference. Leaving Avignon we head east passing a number of attractive hill top towns such as Gordes and Rousillion to the town of Apt where we stay for two nights. Our ride from Apt explores the area known as the Luberon with it’s numerous golden-hued, perched villages and limestone gorges. Again you have the option of a shorter ride if you prefer to take it easy. Continuing north our route takes us along the stunning scenery of the Gorge de Nesque and onto Sault, surrounded by fragrant lavender fields. The finale is a ride to the summit of Mont Ventoux which makes a fitting end to this magnificent tour of Provence (there is an easier ride for those that don’t wish to climb Ventoux).

Portugal End to End

    Portugal

  13   days   (Bike: 11 days)

  641   mi   (~ 58 mi  per day)

Welcome to Peak Tours' Portugal end to end, another great adventure on two wheels!

Riding in Portugal is a pure joy, it is the antithesis of the hustle and bustle of normal life. The first thing you may notice when riding out there is the utter peace and quiet, you can’t even hear a plane or a car sometimes. The roads are generally good surface (apart from the ubiquitous cobbles you see in almost all town centres) and the traffic is minimal. Riding in this peaceful country is also like stepping into a time machine in parts, as you will find yourself riding through villages where they still use horse and cart to get around; who knows what they’ll think when a group of lycra-clad joyriders speed through their backyard! From the boulder-strewn hillsides, hilltop castles and deep-ridged valleys of the north; to the majestic sweep of the steep-sided, vineyard packed Douro river; to the beautifully restored “Pousada’s” and stately “Marble Towns”, to the tranquil rivers and pleasant farmland of the Alentejo region; all culminating in a dramatic finish at the sea! We truly hope you have a fantastic time exploring this wonderful country and come away with some great memories. This fantastic tour is designed to be a little less rigorous than some of our more demanding end to end trips. This is still a hilly trip in parts, especially in the first four or five days and should be prepared for with adequate training, but the gradients are much more manageable ranging from around 2% to 5% typically and only ranging up to around 6% – 10% in a few short sections. The mileages are also less than on many of our end to end tours which allows more time for relaxation in the afternoon/evening. There are a few long ascents early on in the tour but these are typically on the shorter end of the percentage scale and they tend to use switchbacks to lessen the blow so we are confident that most of our Peak Tours customers will find this trip eminently achievable.

Scottish End to End

  515   mi   (~ 74 mi  per day)

Welcome to our spectacular new Scottish End to End cycling tour!

Over the course of 7 days, we will cycle from Penrith and cross the Scottish border heading along the north-west coast of Scotland finishing in the ancient village of Durness one week later. This tour has come about through popular demand from our customers and follows the same route as the second week of the Dover to Durness ride. Scotland is home to some of the most incredible cycling the UK has to offer. We set out heading north from the beautiful surroundings of the northern Lake District and then on to the pretty village of Thornhill in Scotland before we take in the west coast of Scotland and also the beautiful islands of Arran, Mull and Skye before we reach the village of Durness, at the north western tip of mainland UK. White sandy beaches and crystal clear waters abound, not to mention the abundant wildlife and sweeping vistas of the Scottish highlands make this tour a truly amazing experience.

Mizen Head to Malin Head

    Ireland

  581   mi   (~ 58 mi  per day)

Rolling green fields, fantastic pubs, the 'Craic', stunning scenery

The Mizen Head to Malin Head cycle tour or “Head to Head” conjures up a variety of images, rolling green fields, fantastic pubs, the “Craic”, a puncture or three, stunning scenery, and a tremendous sense of achievement. In devising this route we have heard on numerous occasions from our customers that “it’s only on our doorstep and I don’t really know much about it”….well now is a good a time as any to find out. Experience tells us that the best direction to traverse the length of the country is from the southwest to the northeast. The rationale behind this choice revolves around wind and transport. The prevailing wind blows from the southwest and the transport connections work best when returning from Belfast International Airport. The Mizen Head to Malin Head route will be undertaken over ten days cycling and we aim to keep away from busy roads wherever possible. It encompasses some of Ireland’s most spectacular countryside and exhilarating, wild scenery. Although the cycling in Ireland is great, there are times throughout the tour that the road surface is not as smooth as you may be used to. To this end, after testing all the roads on the trip, we are recommending completing the challenge on sturdier tyres of 28mm and up (25mm absolute minimum), to increase your comfort and enjoyment of the tour. You are provided with detailed route notes and for those with Garmins, we also have Mizen Head to Malin Head GPX files of the route (or you can hire a device from us with the route loaded on). A tour leader cycles at the back of the group and there is a support vehicle on hand should you require assistance. We also carry a few spare bikes just in case you have any major mechanical problems. Lunches are provided at a pub or a caf√© each day and all your luggage is moved for you. Whilst emphasis is always on safety we aim to provide a relaxed approach to cycle touring and wish to facilitate a fun and enjoyable tour with many laughs and memorable moments along the way.

While great care has been taken to show full and correct tour details, unfortunately transcription errors do occur and, although we continually seek to eliminate these, we apologise for any mistakes. Description

The ultimate road cycling holiday in the uk.

That really is the only way to describe our Land's End to John O'Groats tours. LEJOG is a classic challenge across the entire length of mainland Britain that every cyclist should experience at least once in their lifetime.

In all we will cover roughly 1,000 miles , encompassing some of the UK's most stunning and remote countryside in just 14 days of exhilarating cycling! It's tough, an adventure, hard work, you'll get a puncture or two, but its one of the most rewarding things you will ever do!!

Cyclists on Loch Naver

Perfectly Designed Route

Our carefully designed route avoids heavy traffic and busy towns as much as possible, and takes us well off the beaten track along quiet country lanes and specific National Cycle Network (NCN) routes.

We travel from Land's End following the south Cornish coast, riding over the wilds of Dartmoor, and over the Severn Bridge into Wales. Following the River Wye on the Welsh border through the stunning rural landscapes of Hereford and Shropshire.

Heading further north we discover the amazing Forest of Bowland then into the Lake District and cross the border into Scotland. Before long we're passing through the Trossachs, Loch Lomond and Grampian Mountains to Inverness, then the experience wilderness of the Scottish Highlands en-route to our final destination John O'Groats.

Summary of 14 Day LEJOG Route

Our goal is to facilitate a fun and enjoyable tour with many laughs and memorable moments along the way. After all, it is a holiday!!

Arrival Day:  Saturday > Penzance

Our first night Saturday is spent at accommodation in Penzance a lovely Cornish seaside town around 9 miles from Land's End. You can make your way directly to the Hotel if being driven by family or friends who are travelling to wave you off on your adventure.

Or our accommodation is just 2 minutes from the train station. Let us know when your arriving and our guides can meet you helping to take your bike (if we don't already have it) and luggage to the Hotel.

We ask that people try to  arrive at the Hotel by 6pm latest  on Arrival day. This is because at 6.30pm we normally have a tour briefing session at which important information relating to safety and general advice on how to survive 14 days in the saddle is provided.

After this we have a group evening meal at 7.30pm at our Hotel so you can socialize and meet your fellow LEJOGer’s. So if you arrive early in the afternoon you’ll have plenty of time to explore Penzance.

Travel logistics

Getting to penzance.

The M5 will take you as far as Exeter, there you can join the A30 which will take you all the way to Penzance. Remember to give yourself enough time as being peak holiday time the roads can and will be very busy especially around Bristol and for the last stretch through Cornwall.

Hiring Car/Van

Some guests use the 'one way' drop off option offered by hire companies when travelling to the start. Best options for Penzance if you are planning to hire a car or van are:

Europcar: Their office is at Penzance Train Station very close to where we stay on the first night.

Enterprise:   Their depot is just outside town at a place called Long Rock. However they will often bring you into town, but if not just let us know and we'll collect you.

By Train

There are frequent trains from London Paddington to Penzance and via numerous connections from the North such as Reading,

NB. If you are bringing your bike on a train please make sure you also book it a space on your train as many services have restricted capacity for cycles.

You can fly to Cornwall by taking a flight from London to Newquay Airport. From Newquay you can take a coach or train onwards to Penzance. If taking the train to Penzance ensure you change at Par station.

Flights from Ireland - The closest major airports are Bristol or Birmingham, from here you can get the train or coach to Penzance.

By Ferry

For visitors coming from Europe there are ferry links from Roscoff, in France or Santander, in Spain, both to the nearby port of Plymouth. A train or coach can then be taken to Penzance.

Bike transfer

Getting your bike to land's end and home again, option 1:   customer drop off  / collection.

FREE of Charge

If you can bring your bike to and collect from our offices in Northamptonshire then we will transfer your bike  Free of Charge . No need to dismantle we'll take it fully assembled and safely secure it in the support vehicle for transporting.

We can also take helmets strapped to bikes and day bags labelled with your name.

Option 2:   Bike Collection or Delivery  -  Pedal Britain Support Van

Cost for this service is  £75.00  per bike -  One Way to Start or From the End

On the Tuesday and Wednesday before a tour starts and in the week after a tour, based on geographical location of clients that have signed up for this service, Pedal Britain's support van will come to an address of your choosing, which could be work, home or cycle shop to collect / deliver your bike.

No need to dismantle we'll take it fully assembled and safely secure in the support vehicle for transporting.

Option 3:   Bike Collection or Delivery   -  Transport Partner

Cost for this service is  £75.00  per bike -  One Way to Start or From the End

If you happen to fall outside the geographical area being covered by the support van prior to the tour then do not despair we have an alternative solution.

On the Monday before a tour starts we'll arrange for our trusted transport partner to collect your bike from an address of your choosing, which could be work, home or cycle shop and deliver your bike to Pedal Britain.

Clients will need to securely package up their own bike in a Medium size (150 x 22 x 90 cm) cardboard bike box. A local bike shop will for free or small fee provide a suitable box and much of the packing material you will need for this. Pedal Britain will return your bike the same way in the week after a tour ends.

Once we arrive in Penzance on the Saturday the Pedal Britain team will help you re-assemble your bike ready for push off on Sunday.

We cannot via this service accept helmets or any day bags packed inside the boxes.

Option 4:    Bike Delivery  - JOG Bike Company

Cost for this service is  £135.00  per bike -  One Way back Home

We use this option only when the delivery address for your bike is one that does not fit geographically into any of the routes planned for the Pedal Britain support vehicles and you do not want your bike returned via Option 3. The bikes will be packed into oversized reinforced cardboard boxes for you - saddle lowered and handle bars turned - are only adjustments made.

We'll send you a link to provide information required for this service and your bike will be delivered within 7 days of the tour ending.

Bike Transfer Service:   Both Ways

Total Cost is  £150.00   per bike

£210.00  per bike if using JOG Bike Transfer Company for return.

Terms & Conditions of Bike Transfer Service

  • Pedal Britain cannot be held responsible for any damage that occurs in transit - although we will obviously take great care of bikes in transit
  • Where a third party is being used Pedal Britain cannot be held responsible for any damage in transit
  • We recommend that you have insurance in place to cover you for any accidental damage or theft during transit

Pedal Britain has always strongly recommended that clients use their own cycles wherever possible for our tours, as there is no substitute for using a bike that you are familiar with and are comfortable riding.

However we fully understand that sometimes circumstances mean this is just not possible.

Need to Hire a Bike?

We do not run our own fleet of hire bikes therefore have to source them from our trusted range of suppliers. At peak times of the year stock can be limited therefore please do let us know well in advance if you intend to hire a bike.

First step is to please email us with your measurements and preferences:

  • Shimano group set
  • Disc or Caliper brakes
  • Carbon or Non carbon

PLEASE NOTE:  Most road bikes run 11-28 compact gearing as they are generally set up for sportive hire. However we'll do our best to find a bike that works for you.

Once you hire the bike it will be available to use from Saturday Morning in Penzance giving us a day to make any adjustments that you may want.

Road Bike Hire:

Branded High Spec Carbon Road Bike  =  £350-£375 each for 2 weeks . This will be a Trek Madone SLR 6 or equivalent

Non Branded UK Built Bikes =  £250-£300 for 2 weeks

Hybrid Bike Hire:

Branded High Spec Carbon Hybrid Bike =  £250-£300 each for 2 weeks .

Want to Bring Your Own Bike But Need Help With Logistics?

If you currently live outside UK but are unsure about bringing your own cycle,  please call or e-mail for advice.  We can discuss a variety of solutions that might help you to bring a bike along.

Some of the ways we can help:

  • Bike Box/Bag on Van :  On each tour we have room for several soft bike bags and 2 hard case bike boxes - for overseas clients only
  • Getting Bike to the Start :  Also if when you land in UK you are planning to tour first / or just want to travel without bike to Penzance - we can as part of our  bike transfer service collect your bike from a Hotel (Tuesday/Wednesday) before the tour and take it to the start for you.
  • Staying on longer in UK after tour :  Don't want a bike in tow? We can also keep bike and box with us after the tour, then by using our  bike transfer service we can deliver the bike to a Hotel near London/or an Airport when you are ready to head home

Just contact us on [email protected] setting out what your plans are and we'll come up with a solution that works for you.

How fit do I need to be?

Pedal Britain tours are designed to attract people of all ages and levels of fitness.

To help you assess if a ride is suitable we have added a 'Cycling Level' indicator on each tour. Obviously the more training you do beforehand it will increase the overall enjoyment of any tour as you'll be more prepared.

Pedal Britain has a range of 'Training Support Resources' including a free consultation and a blog about  Training Plans within which you'll find some great tips and an easy to follow framework that can be adapted for any of our tours.

We do not issue 'standard' training plans, everyone starts at different levels of experience, fitness and available time. For those confident enough, all you do is adjust our framework to suit your own needs.

However to provide another level of support, we have created with Pedal Britain guide Grant Goodman (qualified cycling coach) also of cyclingfitness.co.uk several coaching packages from Basic to Premium. You can find links to these and all our training information here:  Training Resource

What sort of cyclist comes on your tours?

We have a mixture, from keen club cyclist through to newcomers looking for a challenge.

How fast do we ride?

That is completely up to you. It is your holiday and so we encourage you to ride at your own pace. The average touring cyclist will normally travel at 10-13mph. What we find is naturally 2-3 groups form and you'll always find one that suits your pace.

Some people get concerned by always being at the back as they feel anxious about holding everyone up, believe us you are not!! However if that mentally becomes an issue then you can always set off 30 minutes ahead of the pack. But we will never ask you to pedal faster.

No one on a Pedal Britain tour gets left behind as our guides for the most part ride at the back, especially at the end of a day to provide encouragement and support.

What are the groups like?

There is no one standard group every tour is unique. But generally people that undertake our tours are a fun, friendly and adventurous lot with one key similarity - they love cycling!! We have people of all ages (teens through to mid 70's) and all walks of life which makes for an interesting and diverse group of fellow participants.

Groups tend to be split 50:50 between those traveling alone or part of a group be it pairs of friends/couples/family or occasionally larger ones of 3-4. We try and limit our group size to a maximum of 18 people which we think works best, providing plenty of people to socialise with during the day and evening, but also enables people to find some quiet time too.

What kind of bike should I use?

For LEJOG we do recommend you use a road, touring or hybrid bike with a minimum of 25mm good quality tyres. But it's entirely up to you what type of bike you use, so long as it's in good working order. It's definitely worth putting bike in for a full service before the trip.

Key thing is your comfortable, have trained with it or something similar and you're confident that on it you will get to the end.

Do I need to be a good bike mechanic?

Pedal Britain provides  mechanical support  in form of basic adjustments, or simple repairs, while your guide will also carry a reasonable tool kit to help with any minor problems on the road - the van has a more comprehensive set.

However it is essential that you are able to fix a puncture . Obviously if the guide, fellow riders or van are nearby they will assist but it maybe that the van is tied up elsewhere therefore you don’t want to be unnecessarily held up waiting.

Essential kit to carry at all times for puncture repair

It is advisable to carry on your bike at least 1 or 2 spare inner tubes, a mini pump / Co2 gas pressure pump, tyre levers and multi-tool with you each day. This essential kit can be kept either in a small rucksack that you carry or in a medium sized saddlebag.

We also ask that you take care of basic bike maintenance. Firstly having a comprehensive bike service before you arrive on the tour, then by inspecting your bike daily to ensure its in proper working order.

A work stand, track pumps, chain lubricant and cleaning materials will be available for your use on the van.

The support vehicle will carry a limited number of universal spares that are provided at cost should they be required. If your bike has any obscure or unusual parts that may not be readily available at a bike shop it is highly recommended that you bring your own set of spares with you that can be carried on the support vehicle.

We will carry a spare bike and wheel so that you can keep moving if you do have any serious bike problems.

Whilst Pedal Britain will endeavour to fix your bike issues, any major repairs will have to be co-ordinated through a local bike shop on the road, with any cost for these repairs being your responsibility.

How much luggage can I bring?

Please bring what you need to make your holiday relaxing and comfortable. We do request that you limit this to one item of luggage per person and that this is clearly labelled. Also where possible please try and keep one bag to between 15kg-18kg.

We also recommend you bring a ruck sack that can be left in the support vehicle as a 'day bag' to hold sun cream, waterproofs, extra gels etc. This helps limit what you carry and will be accessible at every break.

What happens to my luggage each day?

We want your holiday to be as hassle free as possible. So for you comfort we transfer your luggage each day to the next accommodation.

All we ask is that on setting out each morning you leave your fully labeled luggage and day bags in the reception or at the rear of the support van. Don't worry we'll provide you with labels.

What are the group sizes?

At Pedal Britain we want to ensure you receive the highest level of support possible whilst you are on one of our tours.

To this end we will normally run a tour with a minimum of 10 people, but unlike other operators we limit the group size to a maximum of 18 people. We feel this ensures there is always enough people to be social, but not too many for it to feel overcrowded and your just part of a herd.

Do we have back up support?

We take great pride in the level of support we give to riders on our cycling tours and is a key part of the 'The Pedal Britain Difference'.

That is why we are 5* rated on Trustpilot with many of the reviews specifically mentioning the excellent back up support we provide. You can read extracts of these on our  Pedal Britain Testimonials page.

All our trips are led by at least one or two experienced leaders from the UK – one driving the support vehicle and the other cycling with the group, usually at the rear to ensure that no one gets left behind. They carry a first aid kit and a tool kit, so that if you or your bike breaks down they will if possible be there to help.

The Pedal Britain support vehicle doesn't follow the group very closely. It's main function is to once/twice a day provide the our famous 'Brew Stops', carry luggage between accommodation or if you have a problem you can jump onboard. You will also have access to the van at our lunch stop.

Also be comforted in the knowledge that the team at Pedal Britain HQ are also with you as an invisible hand, making sure everything is running smoothly.

What are the lunches like?

Lunches are generally at either just before or after the halfway point of a day in terms of milage. They consist of various combinations of soup, sandwiches, crisps/chips, savouries, coffee/tea/soft drinks and cake, served as rolling buffets or set meals hosted in either local cafes / pubs.

peak travel cycle tours

Occasionally, depending on the weather, Pedal Britain's pop up cafe will provide a substantial picnic buffet lunch in a suitably scenic location en-route. Don’t worry if your cycling slowly we always make sure there is enough food for everyone at picnics and never leave until everyone is fed and watered.

Where are the evening meals?

Whilst evening meals are not included in the cost of the holiday, Pedal Britain will make reservations between 7.30-8.00pm most days for a group evening meal, so you don’t have to worry.

Also to make life even easier for you we'll sometimes take pre-orders for the evenings food in advance. We find this just helps speed things up at service to maximise your recovery time.

We tend to eat at the accommodation we are staying in that evening although we do occasionally use other local options. These meals provide a great opportunity for socialising together and swapping tales of the days events, further developing the group bonds.

However attendance is purely optional. If you prefer to eat earlier, or alone or wanted to find somewhere else, your Tour Guide can provide alternatives its no problem at all it is your decision.

On longer tours where we are staying in major towns/cities we also have several what we call 'free evenings' where we do not book anything for the group - which allows you to explore local options with smaller groups of new your new cycling buddies.

With all evening meals individuals are responsible for settling their own food and drink bills once finished.

Will the Hotel or B&B do our laundry?

To remain social it’s advisable that on our longer tours you wash your kit out regularly - that includes shorts - a key factor in preventing sore bottoms!!

What most people do is take with them several days worth of cycling kit to rotate through and a small bottle of liquid clothes detergent. Then as part of their daily routine use facilities in the room to wash and dry kit as many have heated towel rails.

If not fully dry the next day roll kit up tightly into a towel or hang up in back of the support van to ensure you have clean kit ready for following day.

Some accommodations do offer limited laundry services (usually just drying kit) either for a small fee or usually free, ready for collection the following morning. Your tour guide will let you know which places on your tour provide this.

Alternatively if time prevails you can use local launderettes to wash and dry clothes - your tour guide will help locate these for you.

Do I need insurance?

Pedal Britain has public liability insurance cover for all of our tours.

However we strongly recommend you take out adequate insurance to cover yourself against personal accident, loss of belongings and cancellation cover.

Yellow Jersey Insurance  are one company that other clients have used previously.  Worth checking first what might be covered under various other policies you may have such as household and travel insurance, then plug any gaps with a specific policy.

What kind of clothing and equipment is needed?

Once you're signed up Pedal Britain will send you a detailed ‘Kit List’ of what you should bring along, however do feel free to contact us if you would like a copy sending to you or have any specific questions .

Way of the Roses July 2022

This three day Way of the Roses trip was my first such experience. I'm delighted to say that it was well worth the effort. I cannot fault Peak Tours's organisation either at HQ or on the ground. Good accommodation, decent food, great logistics support and comprehensive briefings. In short, an excellent all-round service. Many thanks to Dave at HQ and Johnny, Jim and Dan on the ground.

10 Day Lands End to John O'Groats cycle ride

This 10 day trip was superb, it was challenging as expected but the support given by Peak Tours was superb from the detail provided before the trip, to arrival and transfer, morning briefings, refreshment/meal stops, accomodation and bag movements, nothing was left to chance. Mike, Alli and Johnny (the peak tours staff on the trip) were superb, nothing was too much trouble and information/instructions were excellently delivered. Superb trip, Thanks to all at Peak Tours, I am already looking at your trips to select my next one.

Great social and riding experience

I have been on two different coast to coast tours with this company and enjoyed both immensely. The pace was about right for me (35-45 miles per day with some hill climbing). The accommodation for the overnights was first class, all organised for us. The tours attracted a very pleasant sociable mix of riders in a wide range of ages. There was a Peak Tours "guide" with us at all times and another in a support vehicle. Generous mid ride snacks and drinks were included as well as lunch. Almost everyone joined in the evening meal (price not included) at well chosen restaurants. If this pace of challenge suits you then I'd thoroughly recommend the experience.

peak travel cycle tours

Buggy Tours LLC offers a wide variety of tours including a visit to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Along the way up America’s Mountain you’ll be able to stop, get out and stretch, and even take in scenic views of Crystal Reservoir.

Unlike other Jeep tours in Colorado , a Buggy Tours Jeep is fully enclosed to keep you warm and cozy during the cold months. But it has the option to remove the top in the summer and warmer months.

These tours are great for adults and kids 12 & under. And Pikes Peak entrance fees are included with the tour price.

If you’re looking for more things to do in Colorado Springs, Buggy Tours also offers tours of The Broadmoor, Cheyenne Canyon, and Old Colorado City.

9. Air Force Academy & Pikes Peak Tour

frederick in flight hot air balloon festival

Enjoy an unforgettable guided tour of the U.S. Air Force Academy and Pikes Peak .

This full-day excursion is one of the few Colorado Springs tours that offers a glimpse into the United States Air Force Academy.

Hosted by Gray Line, a local Colorado company, you’ll be taken care of thanks to more than 42 years of tour experience in the Colorado Springs area.

Included with your tour is roundtrip transportation, a knowledgeable local guide, as well as lunch and drinks throughout the day.

Pickup time for this tour is around 8am and starts in Denver, heading south on I-25 towards your destination.

What is the best way to see Pikes Peak?

As a local couple who lives in Colorado Springs, we think the best way to see Pikes Peak is on a Jeep tour.

You can choose to drive up the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway, but the roads are narrow and can be quite scary for anyone who lives out of state.

But when you book a Jeep tour of Pikes Peak you’ll be safe and secure knowing that an expert driver is taking you to the summit.

You won’t have to worry about driving yourself, and can simply enjoy the ride (and the epic views!).

You can also summit Pikes Peak via the COG Railway , but this is a bit more expensive even if it is totally worth the experience.

How long is a tour of Pikes Peak?

rampart-reservoir-pikes-peak-views

Getting to the top of America’s Mountain via the Pikes Peak Highway is just under 20 miles.

However, due to the high elevation and steep, winding roads this drive can take several hours round-trip.

Most tours of Pikes Peak take an average of 2-4 hours depending on the type of tour you’ve booked.

Typically the tours available are half-day or full-day experiences so you’ll want to come prepared.

What is the best time of year to visit Pikes Peak?

Although summer is a busy tourist season in Colorado, this is actually the best time of year to visit Pikes Peak.

During the winter, the Highway to the summit is sometimes closed due to snowy and inclement weather. Plus, the weather at 14,000+ feet is much colder than the weather in the valley below.

But in the summer you can expect to have the best temperatures at the top of the mountain as well as the clearest views.

This is why we recommend summer as the best time of year to visit America’s Mountain.

No matter which of these Pikes Peak tours you choose, you really can’t go wrong!

There is an activity for everyone to be able to explore the beauty of the Pikes Peaks region.

Get ready to see all kinds of wildlife like yellow-bellied marmots to maybe even a mountain lion or two.

No matter what the day holds, a drive through Pike National Forest and summiting the famous Pikes Peak Highway won’t disappoint.

You’ll drive the summit to over 14,000 above sea level while learning about the local history, and seeing the most breathtaking views in the state.

Our Pikes Peak Downhill Bike Tour is one of the top things to do in Colorado! This tour begins at the Pikes Peak Adventure Center (Colorado Springs) with some coffee and a light breakfast. Once we finish breakfast, we will head out to the top of the mountain in our 15-passenger vans!

Upon arrival, our guides will fit you for your bike and all the appropriate safety gear. All of our Pikes Peak Downhill Bike Tours require our guests to wear full face helmets as well as elbow and knee pads. Safety is one of our key concerns. We help to mitigate some of the bike tour risk by using the highest quality safety equipment.

The Pikes Peak Downhill Bike Tour begins at the summit of Pikes Peak (14,115 feet) where you can take photos and enjoy the breath-taking 360 degree view of Colorado for as far as the eye can see!

As we work our way down this majestic mountain, you will be in awe watching the scenery change as you bike through five separate climactic life zones! Don’t worry though, they won’t pass by without plenty of stops for pictures along the way!

IMPORTANT NOTES ON YOUR HIGH ALTITUDE TOUR

This unforgettable journey is designed for most abilities – some biking experience is required. If you have health concerns, please consult a physician for high altitude compatibility prior to participating.

IMPORTANT: When preparing for the Pikes Peak Downhill Bike Tour, dress for summer but bring gloves, jackets, and pants to wear on top as it can be very very cold at the summit! The summit is an average of 30 degrees cooler than Colorado Springs.

Pikes Peak Tours from Denver Comparison

Tips for visiting pikes peak.

For a more enjoyable experience, here are some mistakes to avoid and general tips to keep in mind as you plan your Pikes Peak day trip from Denver!

  • ⏰ Plan Ahead: Once you know your travel dates, book your Pikes Peak tour in advance as this incredible experience often fills up quickly.
  • 🥶 Dress in Layers: Check the forecast and bring a warm coat or two!! My guide was wearing a parka and was all nice and toasty. Meanwhile, I only brought my Patagonia Nano puff jacket, and I was freezing my toes off!
  • 💧 Stay Hydrated: High elevations can lead to dehydration and altitude sickness, so be sure to drink plenty of water. I even recommend some OTC medicine if you think you’ll get a headache.
  • 😎 Bring Essentials: The restaurant food is ✨very overpriced✨. Save yourself some money by bringing your own fruit snacks, granola bars, sandwiches, etc. I also recommend packing basics like sunscreen, sunglasses, cash for tipping your guide, and your camera!
  • 🚂 Cogwheel Railway: If you decide to take the cogwheel up, reserve your ticket at least a week in advance. They almost always sell out. And for the best views, I recommend you reserve a window seat on the 3-seater side!

Pikes Peak Tours from Denver: FAQ

Pikes Peak tours range from $159 to ~$220 USD per person. That said, the private tour options can be on the pricey side if you only go with a couple of people instead of a larger group.

In my biased opinion, a Pikes Peak tour from Denver is well worth it! They’re great if you appreciate the convenience of a knowledgeable guide, desire a hassle-free experience, and want to admire the gorgeous panoramic views from the top of one of Colorado’s famous 14ers! Plus, most of the tours take you through the Garden of the Gods, which is equally incredible to see!

The best time to visit Pikes Peak is between May and October when the weather is milder. But, if you want to see the beautiful Aspen trees changing colors, I recommend going in the fall! Just remember, Pikes Peak is pretty cold no matter what time of the year you go.

Pikes Peak’s elevation stands at 14,115 feet (4,302 meters) above sea level.

On a relatively clear day, you can see Pikes Peak from Denver! The distinctive mountain peak is visible on the southwestern horizon, providing a stunning backdrop to the Denver skyline.

A guided tour is the easiest way to see Pikes Peak. This is because there are no public transportation options from Denver to Manitou Springs. Alternatively, you can explore at your own pace by renting a car and driving there . You can check car rental options with pick-up at the Denver International Airport here .
