The Downtown Fiction formed in 2008 and is an American pop/pop punk band hailing from Fairfax, Virginia, in the U.S.

Founded by friends Cameron Leah and Eric Jones who met whilst at Westfield High School the pair shared a mutual interest in music and began posting demos under the moniker The Downtown Fiction on their MySpace page. With Leah taking vocal and guitar responsibilities and Jones on drums, the band needing a bassist invited David Pavluk who also performs backing vocals on a number of songs.

Following generous support on MySpace the band toured around the U.S. for the most part of a year and landed a record deal with independent New York, U.S. label Photo Finish Record. The Downtown Fiction released a self-titled EP in March 2009, which featured the particularly popular songs “Is Anybody Out There?” and “Living Proof”. A follow-up EP entitled “Best I Never Had” was released a year after in March 2010 and saw the band being part of the Bamboozle Road Show and Warped Tour the same year.

A compilation EP was then released combining all the previous songs on the earlier The Downtown Fiction EPs under the name “The Double” and in early 2011 began The Glamour Kills Tour headlined by The Ready Set and featured bands like Allstar Weekend and Marianas Trench.

Awaiting the debut album The Downtown Fiction released the video for the first song “I Just Wanna Run” and later the track “Thanks For Nothing”. “Let’s Be Animals” the band’s first full-length album was released in April 2011 and marked their first nationwide headlining tour. The Downtown Fiction has since released the EP “Pineapple” in late 2011, after signing with Fearless Records and a sophomore studio album “Losers & Kings” in 2014.

Live reviews

Taking their name from one of their favourite films “Pulp Fiction”, we have The Downtown Fiction a pop-punk band from Virginia. Making a name for themselves in 2008 on the social network site MySpace saw their fan base increase as they posted demos online. Releasing their self-titled EP and “Best I Never Had” through Photo Finish Records gave them the opportunity to tour with bands such as: We Are The In Crowd, We The Kings and The Summer Set. Soon a buzz surrounded them and in 2010 they joined Bamboozle Road Show followed by Warped Tour, culminating in Alternative Press Magazine acknowledging them as one of the ‘100 Bands You Need To Know’. In 2013 they signed to Fearless Records releasing their second album “Losers and Kings”.

From the moment they step on stage, The Downtown Fiction mean business and are here to get the party started. The infectiously explosive energy that the band possess seeps into the crowd as they wave their arms in the air jumping as high as humanly possible. The Downtown Fiction feed off the upbeat energy that the audience are expressing, as they run across the stage. Synchronised clapping is mandatory clap and enticed through the sweet harmonies with songs like “Is Anybody Out There” and “I Just Wanna Run” which have the crowd singing as loud as they can. Frontman Cameron Leahy wastes no time in jumping into the crowd accompanied by shrill screams as he passes the mic around the audience. Taking the opportunity to strip down the show, Leahy emerges onto the stage with an acoustic solo performance of “Where Dreams Go Die” stunning the audience who are mesmerised by the overwhelming raw emotions permeating through the room. If you like Yellowcard, Taking Back Sunday and energetic fun pop-punk shows, you’ll love The Downtown Fiction.

The Downtown Fiction

Founded in the suburbs of Northern Virginia, The Downtown Fiction rose to national acclaim riding the currents of their captivating live shows and explosive anthems, “I Just Wanna Run” and “Thanks For Nothing,” from the band’s debut full-length album, Let’s Be Animals. The band, comprised of Cameron Leahy (lead vocals, guitar), David Pavluk (bass, backing vocals), Wes Dimond (lead guitar) and Kyle Rodgers (drums), returns with its newest release, Pineapple EP, which displays sharpened hooks while exploring new sonic territory.

OFFICIAL SITE  ::  FACEBOOK  ::  TWITTER  ::  PHOTO FINISH

Formed in 2008, Leahy met Pavluk at a local venue and shortly after decided to try their hand at playing music together. After posting their music online, they quickly garnered a rabid following which caught the attention of Photo Finish Records in 2009. The label would later sign the band and release their first official record, Best I Never Had EP. Dimond and Rodgers later joined in 2011, rounding out the lineup. The band continued their evolution on Let’s Be Animals, drawing from an eclectic pool of classic rock influences without losing any of the infectious melodicism and thoughtful lyricism that originally propelled them into the world of rock that matters. That balance between a raucous musical undercurrent and sharp pop bliss is immediately evident on the album’s leadoff single, “I Just Wanna Run.” The song has already dug itself into pop culture via high-profile placements on the second season premiere of MTV’s The Jersey Shore as well as The Hard Times of RJ Berger, The Hills, and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. After sharing bills all over the world with everyone from All Time Low to The Strokes, The Downtown Fiction has been acclaimed by fans and reviewers for their exciting and fast-paced live shows.

Alternative music or sometimes referred to as alt-rock or simply alternative emerged from the independent music underground in the 1970s and became very popular in the 1980s. Singles & eps, about the downtown fiction.

Like My Favorite Highway and Friday Night Boys, the Downtown Fiction are a melodic emo pop band hailing from the suburban outskirts of Washington, D.C. Formed during the summer of 2008 in Fairfax, Virginia, the band originally consisted of high-school students Cameron Leahy on guitar and vocals and Eric Jones on drums. Classmate David Pavluk joined several months later, handling bass duties and backup vocals. A healthy following on MySpace helped the boys land a contract with Photo Finish Records in 2009, and the band spent the latter half of that year working on new music. By early 2010, they'd made their digital debut with Best I Never Had, an introductory EP that helped them land several summer tours, including the Bamboozle Road Show and the Vans Warped Tour. A second release, The Double EP, arrived later that year, followed in 2011 by the full-length Let's Be Animals. Near the end of the year, Jones left the band and was replaced by Kyle Rogers, while tour guitarist Wes Dimond became an official bandmember. The group toured heavily during 2012 and the next year switched labels, jumping to Fearless. They spent the summer of 2013 writing and recording new songs, some 50 in all, before hitting the studio with Paramore producer Carlos de la Garza and whittling their list of songs down to the best 11 tracks. Recorded in a mere 30 days, Losers & Kings was released in early summer of 2014. ~ Andrew Leahey

The Downtown Fiction

Image

Since the beginning, The Downtown Fiction has risen with their unique brand of transcendent rock, staking their place in the pop-rock genre. Its second album and Fearless debut, Losers & Kings , is the realization of the band’s boldest dreams, a riveting step in creating an original and exhilarating rock sound. With a roster of new songs that are, by turns, hard-driving, happily defiant and anthemic, the Virginia quartet has produced a breakthrough album that opens a window onto their own and a generation’s scattered dreams, urges and fantasies. The music is as addictive as the lyrical themes are irresistible. Losers & Kings is nothing short of a pop-rock triumph.

The album is firmly rooted in the band’s longstanding ambition to break the mold while simultaneously remaining true to their core sound. “We’re always going to be a rock band at heart,” says vocalist/guitarist Cameron Leahy. “But if there’s one aim I have as a songwriter, it’s always to write something that is genuinely different. This is the first time as a band that we finally felt like we were prepared to take ourselves to some place we’d never been before. It was a little bit scary, but that scary feeling is exactly what I think makes these songs have the energy that they do.”

That energy, a product of the band’s rock focus and sharp-edged lyrics, has defined The Downtown Fiction from its start in 2008. Since then, TDF has played the Bamboozle Road Show, Glamour Kills Tour and Warped Tour, touring internationally with bands including All Time Low, The Ready Set, Mayday Parade, We the Kings and The Summer Set. The band has released three EPs and one full-length, 2011’s Let’s Be Animals . That effort spawned the hit “I Just Wanna Run,” which sold over 350,000 copies and boasts a video that’s racked up more than 5.3 million views. That song’s chugging guitars, hard-hitting drums and catchy harmonies not only made it a perfect fit for placement on Jersey Shore and in the video game Rock Band-it exemplifies the band’s zeal for genuine rock & roll.

The same vibe permeates Losers & Kings , especially the classic-sounding track “Some Place On Earth.” The majestic song begins with a confident marching drum and quickly explodes into a celebration of dynamic rock guitars, pulsating bass and ringing keyboards for good measure. The song tells the story of a young man and woman, each alone, adrift and searching for an elusive peace that finally may come in finding the other. “We’re all on our own search for truth, and none of us is exempt from its highs or lows,” Leahy says. “It’s a song about tolerance and love – the world could always use more of that.”

The rawness and simplicity of that emotion is in tune with the band’s intimate and unvarnished recording of the album. “We wanted this record to sound like a band in a room-that was really our aim,” Leahy says. “Right now, it’s sort of the second coming of the ’80s, where there’s so much synthesized music. It challenges people playing instruments to find a way to get that physicality into their music, the way that dance music delivers that thumping bass.”

The Downtown Fiction found a kindred adventurous spirit in producer Carlos de la Garza (Paramore, Young The Giant). Working with de la Garza in his North Hollywood studio, the band recorded Losers & Kings in just 30 days. After amassing more than 50 demos, the group whittled down its list and spent the summer of 2013 extensively rehearsing. “Having so much time to practice the new songs was new for us,” Leahy observes. “It paid off. By the time we got into the studio, we were ready to go.”

The members rented a Los Angeles house together and spent studio off-time surfing, skateboarding and shooting a “TDFtv” web series. Besides cementing the band’s chemistry, the camaraderie permeated the artistic process. “I grew up on The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys and the Beatles,” Leahy says. “We’re not comparing ourselves to them by any means, but there’s something to admire about how united they were making albums, being at the top of their game, not merely as songwriters but as players, too. It’s really special having a group of guys who can do that. All of us had the same vision. We pushed ourselves to deliver the very best for everyone who hears this album.”

The band values the way their music inspires listeners – whether that involves a budding musician picking up a guitar or a lonely person finding solace and thrills in a song. With Losers & Kings , the band never has been more passionate about its music, or more excited about where it’s headed. “If there’s one thing we chased in making the album, it was sincerity,” Leahy says. “With every song, honesty is what we wanted. We wanted it to sound like we would die for our music, and that’s really what we would do. We want people to hear that we’re willing to stand on the edge and let ourselves go for the sake of good music.”

A History of The Actors Studio

Written by Andreas Manolikakis

The Actors Studio was founded in New York by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford and Robert Lewis in 1947. For seven decades it has been devoted to the service and development of theatre artists –actors, directors and playwrights. To our members, who are primarily actors, The Actors Studio offers free lifetime membership, with no fee or tuition required, which entitles them to a unique opportunity to explore and improve their craft in a safe, laboratory environment with colleagues with whom they share the same process of work.

The roots of The Actors Studio go back to the Group Theatre (1931-1941) whose work was inspired by the discoveries of the great Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski and his best student Eugene Vakhtangov as revealed in the legendary productions that the Moscow Art Theatre toured in America in 1923. In fact Stanislavski’s dedication to his book, ‘My Life in Art,’ (1924) reads: “I DEDICATE THIS BOOK IN GRATITUDE TO HOSPITABLE AMERICA AS A TOKEN AND A REMEMBRANCE FROM THE MOSCOW ART THEATRE WHICH SHE TOOK SO KINDLY TO HER HEART.”

When the Moscow Art Theatre ended its American tour, several members of the theatre stayed behind and trained artists, including Lee Strasberg, Harold Clurman and Stella Adler, who would go on to form the Group Theatre along with other artists such as Elia Kazan, Sanford Meisner and Robert Lewis. These artists studied, explored, developed and improved the work of the Russian masters with extraordinary results that were unique in the history of the American theatre and a new kind of acting was born.

After the Group Theatre closed, in 1941, many of its members went their separate ways. Elia Kazan has stated that one of the principal reasons he created The Actors Studio, in 1947, was in order to preserve and develop this new American acting. He wanted to create a not-for-profit organization that would provide a laboratory, a private workshop in which the professional actor could work on his or her craft, far away from the commercial pressures of casting, rehearsal and performance. It was to be a place that would offer its member-artists an ongoing training, a continuity of work and the feeling of an artistic home like they had at the Group Theatre.

At the Studio, it was eventually decided that membership should be achieved through an audition process of preliminary and then final auditions where the only requirements are talent and the possibility of improvement.

In 1948, Lee Strasberg was asked by Elia Kazan to join the Studio as one of its teachers and in 1951 he became its Artistic Director, a position he maintained until his death in 1982. Strasberg’s deep understanding of the Stanislavski System and the reformulations of Vakhtangov, together with his own personal discoveries and improvements on the acting process, provided the foundation on which The Actors Studio based its work.

At the same time, the work of Elia Kazan as a theatre and film director demonstrated in the most powerful way the extraordinary results of the deep and personal process of acting espoused by The Actors Studio.

For seven decades, the very existence of The Actors Studio, the principles and values that it represents, the methodology of its work process, its consistency and long life have established the Studio as a unique theatre organization and a guiding light for actors, directors and playwrights around the world. For many it is considered the temple of the acting process.

Today the work that is done at The Actors Studio continues the Stanislavski-Vakhtangov-American approach, and most of the leading members of the Studio today have studied with more than one of these great American teachers: Lee Strasberg, Harold Clurman, Elia Kazan, Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner and Robert Lewis.

Currently, Ellen Burstyn, Alec Baldwin and Al Pacino serve as co-Presidents of the Studio. Beau Gravitte serves as Artistic Director in New York and Salome Jens and Lou Antonio serve as interim co-Associate Artistic Directors in West Hollywood at our Actors Studio West branch, which opened in 1966. The Actors Studio is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of members from both coasts.

After 70 years, The Actors Studio continues to thrive because it is needed. Goethe has said that, “The actor’s career develops in public, but his art develops in private.” The Studio provides its members with this special kind of privacy, along with a group of colleagues who share the same passion for what Studio members refer to as “The Work.”

In spite of the presence of The Actors Studio over many years and its extensive influence in America and worldwide, there still persist many misunderstandings of the Studio, its mentors, its philosophy and its process. These errors most often arise from discussions by some academics, theoreticians, historians and even by some theatre professionals who attempt to analyze and interpret a process of work that they have never learned through serious practice. The work of Stanislavski, Vakhtangov and The Actors Studio was arrived at through deep and lengthy practical experiments that elude rational analysis by non-practitioners.

In 1994 The Actors Studio entered a major new phase with the creation of The Actors Studio Drama School MFA (Master of Fine Arts) Program in acting, directing and playwriting, in order to bring the Studio’s method into a university setting. In September 2006, the Actors Studio Drama School moved to Pace University in downtown New York City, which also is the home of one of the program’s most visible teaching platforms, INSIDE THE ACTORS STUDIO, hosted by James Lipton.

Andreas Manolikakis is a Board Member of The Actors Studio and Chair of The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City.
