Estádio José Alvalade is a purpose-built 50,095 capacity football stadium located in the Portugal capital of Lisbon. Home to one of the biggest and most recognizable teams in the country, Sporting Clube de Portugal, the Alvalade XXI complex first opened in 2003 in anticipation of the Euro 2004 Tournament.

Sporting Lisbon Stadium Guide

Estádio josé alvalade history.

Estádio José Alvalade was constructed for the Portuguese hosted Euro 2004 tournament where it hosted five games including the semi final between Portugal and Netherlands which the home side won 2-1. The inaugural match was held the previous summer on the 6th August 2003 when Sporting Lisbon played Manchester United in an entertaining friendly match which ended in victory for the tenants of the new stadium.

Immediately classified as a Five-star stadium by UEFA upon completion, the 50,095 capacity ground was designated as the host of the 2005 UEFA Cup Final which saw Russian side CSKA Moscow defeat Sporting 3-1 in a match with disappointment levels comparable to those of the Euro 2004 final against Greece .

Designed by famous architect Tomás Taveira who also helped conceptualise two of the Euro 2004 stadiums in Aveiro and Leiria, Estádio José Alvalade is famous for it’s bright exterior, curvy architectural lines and colourful seats inside the ground. Built within a wider entertainment complex known as Alvalade XXI which includes a cinema, health club, offices and museum.

Built adjacent to the now demolished former stadium, the new Estádio José Alvalade continues to be named after Sporting Club founder despite the trend for commercialisation across Europe, with the record attendance of 48,855 for a domestic match was set when Sporting CP hosted great rivals Porto on the 7th January 2012.

There are storage lockers you may use, and after European matches you will be held back for approximately 45 minutes to allow the home fans to disperse and to ease congestion.

Best Pubs near ground

The majority of bars are to be found within Lisbon’s city centre rather than at Esstadio Alvalade and the Campo Grande area. There are quite a few overlooking the Tangus River which when combined with the weather make for the perfect drinking spots.

The closest metro station is Campo Grande Station which can be accessed via both the yellow (Amarela) and green (Verde) lines which is coincidetally the two colours of Sporting Lisbon!

Depending on your starting location it may make sense to take either, however the green one is much more accessible from the city centre.

Hotels Near Estádio José Alvalade

If you’re looking for something more or less right next to the stadium you’re in luck as there’s a Radisson Blue Hotel. Otherwise you’re better of looking back towards Lisbon city centre – anywhere within a 5-10 minute walk of the two metro lines would be ideal.

Tenants: Sporting CP

Opened: 2003

Capacity: 50,095

Address: Rua Professor Fernando da Fonseca, 1501-806 Lisboa, Portugal

The Estádio José Alvalade is the home venue of Sporting Clube de Portugal, one of the most successful clubs in Portuguese football. The stadium was built ahead of the country hosting UEFA Euro 2004, with the need for Sporting’s current stadium to be redeveloped or replaced. The new stadium therefore was built on the site of the old Estádio José Alvalade, a 60,000 capacity stadium that had hosted Sporting CP since 1956. Both stadiums were named after José Alvalade – the founder and first club member of Sporting CP.

The new stadium was opened on the 6th August 2003, with a match between Sporting and Manchester United in which they won 3-1 – also remembered as the match that convinced Sir Alex Ferguson to sign a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

The stadium would host five matches at UEFA Euro 2004 – three group matches, including a 1-0 win for the hosts over Spain, as well as a 2-1 for Czech Republic over Germany that knocked the Germans out of the competition. A shock 1-0 win for eventual winners Greece over reigning champions France followed in the Quarter-finals, with a semi-final 2-1 win for Portugal over the Netherlands also played at the Alvalade.

Portugal have since played several international matches at the stadium since 2004, both friendlies and competitive qualification fixtures.

The 2005 UEFA Cup Final was also played at the Estádio José Alvalade, with Sporting playing on their home venue. Unfortunately the advantage of playing at their home was not enough, losing 2-1 to CSKA Moscow of Russia.

Stadium Guide: Estadio Jose Alvalade, Sporting Lisbon

Estadio Jose Alvalade, Sporting Lisbon-Benfica, Primeira Liga, Sat Mar 5

The lions of Sporting Lisbon have roared all too rarely in recent years. With no title since 2002, Sporting have at least earned kudos and considerable lucre by producing the likes of Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo.

A runners-up spot in 2014, and Champions League qualification, pointed to the potential of a talented young squad. Among the current crop of former youth team players – Carlos Mane, Andre Martins – is top Scots prodigy Ryan Gauld.

Crucially, Sporting nabbed trophy-laden coach Jorge Jesus from Benfica before the 2015-16 campaign – and are now neck-and-neck at the top of the table with their near neighbours and historic rivals.

The third of Portugal’s big three after Benfica and Porto, the later Sporting Clube de Portugal were formed by well-to-do young Lisboetas who played ‘foot-ball’ at Belas and later met at the Pastelaria Bijou on Avenida da Liberdade.

They started out as the Campo Grande Football Club, under the auspices of the Viscount of Alvalade, a landowner, adopting as a badge the rampant lion of Count Dom Fernando de Castelo Branco. Their original plain tops became hoops when the team had to borrow rugby shirts on a tour of Brazil in the 1920s.

By the 1930s, the green-and-whites were dominating the Portuguese game. Led by the ‘five violins’ – including the prolific Peyroteo, who shares the goalscorers’ record in the Benfica derby with Eusebio – the Lions won seven titles in eight years.

Estadio-Jose-Alvalade2

The last of these came in 1954, shortly before the European Cup was launched. In 1956, Sporting opened their new stadium, named after Jose Alvalade.

Outshone by Benfica’s Stadium of Light and overshadowed by Eusébio and European glory, Sporting at least managed to take two titles in the 1960s and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1964. Defender Joao Morais got the winner direct from a corner, earning him a more praiseworthy footnote in football history than his brutal foul on Pelé in the 1966 World Cup.

Since then, the Lions have won the occasional title and contrived to lose the UEFA Cup of 2005 to CSKA Moscow, even though it was played at the Jose Alvalade itself. Rebuilt and reopened in 2003, this four-star stadium, now surrounded by the Alvalaxia leisure complex, is an arena worthy of champions. All it needs is… well, champions.

The capacity of 50,000 might be around the same as the original Jose Alvalade opened in 1956, but the Alvalade XXI is a completely different beast.

Estadio-Jose-Alvalade3

The €100-million plus stadium was opened in August 2003 with a friendly between Sporting and Manchester United, won by the hosts for whom Cristiano Ronaldo shone so brightly, the United players persuaded Sir Alex Ferguson to buy him.

On the ground

Sporting-Lisbon

Brightly tiled on the outside, colourful within, with a seating pattern giving the lie that the ground is full, the impressive Jose Alvalade stands near Campo Grande metro station on the blue and yellow metro lines.

The Superior seats behind the goal and the Central ones on the sidelines are the cheapest and dearest tickets respectively. The main bilheteira (12.30pm-7.30pm, match days) is behind the Nascente stand (Caixa Geral de Depositos) immediately up from Campo Grande metro.

Estadio-Jose-Alvalade

Also behind the Nascente stand, the Loja Verde is a tastefully conceived, two-storey boutique that stocks goodies ranging from a toy Honda motorbike to a replica stadium in silver. A wonderful blow-up photo of the Five Violins greets you at the entrance.

Guided tours incorporating a visit to the treasure chest that is the Museu Mundo Sporting take place every day at 11.30am, 2.30pm and 4pm. Combined tickets are €10 (€6 6s-11s, under 6s free), tour-only €7 (€5), museum-only €8 (€5).

Estadio-Jose-Alvalade6

Outlets fill the Alvalaxia mall adjacent to the stadium. Of these, the best is the Cervejeira Nacional on the upper floor, a simple, friendly bar-restaurant in which a black-and-white pictorial history of Sagres beer fills one wall, and a massive photo of the Seleccao the other. There’s also space for signed Sporting shirts. A glass of cold Sagres from a giant tap on the bar counter can be complemented by a hamburger or a chourico assado sausage.

Estadio-Jose-Alvalade5

Further up, the alcatejoLx is an upscale restaurant that takes reservations for matches, which diners can watch from its windows overlooking the pitch. On the ground floor, the sympathetic, dark-wood Pizzaria Nacional complements the Cervejeira upstairs, and also takes reservations on match days.

Palace Square

Palace Square is considered to be the city's main square and serves as an excellent example of how different architectural styles can be combined in a most elaborate and aesthetically pleasing way. On the northern side of the square stands the picturesque Baroque Winter Palace (built in 1754-62).

Across the square, on the southern side, stands the classical yellow-and-white building of the former Imperial Army General Staff (built between 1819 and 1829 by the Italian architect Carlo Rossi). The building encircles the Southern side of the square and combines a central arch, designed as a Triumphal Arch after the ancient architecture of the Classical World, through which you can reach Nevsky Prospekt .

On the eastern side the building of the former Royal Guards' General Staff tastefully closes the panorama of Palace Square, while on the West the square borders with the Admiralty and the Admiralty Garden. With the guilded spire of the Admiralty and the dome of St Isaac's clearly seen from here, the view westwards across the stone-clad expanse of Palace Square is quite breathtaking. In the middle of the square the Alexander Column creates an important focal point for this great architectural ensemble.

St. Petersburg Russia Tours

St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It was built on a collection of islands where the Neva River meets the Gulf of Finland and is divided further by a system of canals earning the city the name the Venice of the North. St. Petersburg was referred to as Peter the Great’s Window to the West because the great Tsar and reformer Peter the First designed the city to be Russia’s most European. The European feeling of the city is as true today as it was during the early 1700s. The embankments and boulevards are full of 18th and 19th century palaces of the nobility giving St. Petersburg an almost fairytale atmosphere. The historical city center is huge and dominated by the Winter Palace (former residence of the Tsars) which now houses the world famous Hermitage Museum . St. Petersburg Russia indeed is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities on earth. Our company is based in St. Petersburg, Russia allowing us to offer the widest variety of St. Petersburg Russia tours and excursions available on the Internet. All of our tours are designed so that our guests experience maximum enjoyment and become immersed in the culture and history of this great, Russian city. All our tours are private and can be fully customized upon your request. You can either choose one of our ready-made packages or create your own. St. Petersburg in the 19th century

St. Petersburg – a Historical Gem

The city has witnessed some of the most dramatic and important moments in Russian history since its founding in 1703 by Peter the Great , making the city especially important for curious travelers coming to Russia. St. Petersburg was the scene of the Decembrist uprising , the famous court of Tsarina Catherine the Great , the assassination of Tsar Pavel and Alexander II and the home of Rasputin , the Siberian mystic. The last Tsar, Nicholas the II, was overthrown at the Winter Palace and the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and Lenin brought communism to power here. After the revolution, the name of the city was changed to Leningrad. During the Second World War, Leningrad was under siege and fully blockaded by the Nazis for almost 3 years, resulting in the deaths of up to 1.5 million of its citizens. Our St. Petersburg tours take you to the places associated with many of these events and more.
