Pulhams Coaches launches with Passenger as Go-Ahead invests in latest digital technology

Passenger and Go-Ahead have launched a new Pulhams Coaches app in the Cotswolds as part of their effort to make travelling easier for passengers.

Pulhams Coaches’ app allows passengers to plan their journeys, purchase tickets in advance, and research ‘things to do’ in the Cotswolds. It provides a comprehensive view of travel across multiple bus operators in the region, including Stagecoach.

Passengers can now validate their journey by scanning their phones on the vehicles’ QR code readers. The app can also be used to check real-time travel updates and see the network of services available.

Alex Chutter, area director at Pulhams, said: “We’re committed to making bus and coach travel as accessible and convenient as possible for customers, and our latest investment in digital technology takes our service to the next level.

“It provides customers with access to live travel information, travel planning tools, more ticketing options and convenient ways to pay. We have launched various new services recently, and the app will help customers research all the bus and coach travel options that are available to them.”

The app is available to download for free, and it offers a range of new ticket options.

It provides a seamless journey planning experience, which makes exploring the Cotswolds by bus as, if not more, appealing than jumping in the car. In June 2023, Go-Ahead bought Pulham & Sons (Coaches) Limited, a long-established family-run bus and coach operator in the Cotswolds. The business joined Go-Ahead’s Oxford Bus Company division, which presently comprises Thames Travel, Carousel Buses, and the eponymous Oxford Bus Company. All of these companies already rely upon digital customer experience technology from Passenger.

Pulhams has a fleet of 90 buses and coaches and employs 126 people and is a well-known and respected local business serving communities in Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire.

Based in Bourton-on-the-Water, Pulhams is one of Britain’s oldest established passenger transport companies. It was founded in 1880 to transport passengers into Cheltenham from nearby villages by horse and cart.

The acquisition has expanded Go-Ahead’s Oxford business to the west, with improved connectivity between Pulhams’ bus services in Oxfordshire and the wider Go-Ahead network of services.

New Pulhams Coaches bus app includes other operators’ services

Pulhams Coaches has launched a new app for its bus services in collaboration with supplier Passenger. The work sits alongside an overhauled website for the Bourton-on-the-Water operator.

The app will allow bus customers to plan journeys, check real-time updates and buy passes and tickets in advance or on the day of travel. Some new fare products are available via the app, which uses QR codes.

In addition to information on Pulhams’ own bus services, the app will give details of those provided by multiple other operators, including Stagecoach. Such an approach will “provide a joined-up view of the area’s bus services for the first time,” the Go-Ahead subsidiary says.

Also part of the app is a ‘things to do in the Cotswolds’ function via an events and attractions section. That works alongside the travel planning tool, which additionally includes details of the features that are available aboard buses.

Speaking about the enhanced app and website, Pulhams Coaches Area Director Alex Chutter says: “We are committed to making coach and bus travel as accessible and convenient as possible for customers, and out latest investment in digital technology takes our services to the next level.

“It provides customers with access to live travel information, travel planning tools, more ticketing options, and convenient ways to pay. We have launched various new services recently, and the app and website will help customers to research all the coach and bus travel options available to them.”

Pulhams Coaches past and present

In June 2023, the Go-Ahead Group announced that it was to purchase family-owned Pulham & Sons (Coaches) Limited. Richard Sharman takes a look back at some of the earlier members of the fleet, and looks at current operations

If you were to write a list of long-established independent family-owned coach operators in the UK that are still going, you could easily write a top 10 at least, and until recently this Bourton-on-the-Water operation would have always been right up there. When you consider that it has a history dating back all the way to 1880, it is no surprise.

Serving the Cotswolds

The basis for the business goes back to 1880 and the introduction of a horse-drawn cart to move produce to the market in Cheltenham. This led to a weekly service from Bourton from 1885, and that link has not stopped. Those who are aware of Pulhams service network will know that services were always numbered in the 800 series, at least in the last four-plus decades. The vast majority of towns and villages surrounding Bourton were served at least once a week, with main trunk routes running at least six days a week. In addition, Moreton-in-Marsh market was also regularly served from many of the isolated villages.

The expansion of the company’s operating area and the addition of various council contracts in recent years means those 800-numbered services are now down to five, but the height of the 1990s saw a printed timetable booklet full of them.

In addition to the scheduled services, Pulhams has taken generations of Cotswolds families to and from schools and on school trips and private hires.
