Hi Im Travling To Exminster from Bristol tomorrow on the m5 eny advice mite try 4 or 5 in the morning.what do you think

Not sure what happened but the traffic is mad

Roadworks have just started on the roundabout at junction 9 M5 which has caused chaos to the surrounding roads leading to/from the roundabout. It normally takes me 3/4 minutes to get onto the M5, last night (5.30pm) it took an hour!!

is the m5 southbound between j21 and j22 closed at night? We live along the A370 and lorries have been thundering past from about 2200 onwards.

Constant traffic jams from j2 Oldbury towards j1. I believe the cause is the 60 speed limit imposed on the slim premise of air quality. These jams cause more Co2 than if the limit was at 70

The M5 motorway in the UK is a motorway running from junction 8 of the M4 motorway near Maidenhead, Berkshire to Exeter in Devon and is approximately 200km (125 miles) long. It opened in sections between 1960 and 1975 and is part of the Intra-Urban Motorway Network.

The M5 motorway is considered to be a relatively safe motorway. According to the Department for Transport statistics, the M5 had the second-lowest rate in England of fatal and serious collisions between 201315. An Alliance of South West Road Safety Groups revealed an overall reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries on the M5 between 201115.

Overall, the M5 has an average road safety rating in line with the majority of other UK motorways, with a lower overall rate of death and serious injury than average.

Drivers are being warned to expect long delays on the M5 as holidaymakers head to the West Country for Easter . With the school holidays starting and the Easter weekend approaching, local drivers and tourists alike are being told to prepare for 'carmageddon' on the roads.

The RAC has said that over 14 million trips are planned for the Easter getaway, and some journeys could take twice as long as usual. Rail travel will also be disrupted due to Network Rail engineering work, with the southern section of the West Coast Main Line closed from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

The stretch of the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton is expected to be particularly busy. The RAC suggests that anyone who can travel late on Thursday (March 28) or early on Good Friday (March 29) should do so to avoid the busiest times. Traffic monitoring system Inrix predicts that the worst congestion on Thursday will be between 2pm and 7pm, as leisure travellers and regular commuters compete for road space.

VisitEngland, the tourist board, has revealed that around 11 million people in the UK are planning to take an overnight trip this Easter, bringing a whopping £3.2 billion boost to the economy. A survey by the RAC and transport analysis company Inrix suggests that on Good Friday alone, 2.6 million leisure journeys will be made by car.

Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are each set to see about 2.3 million getaway trips. On both Thursday and Easter Monday, it's predicted that 2.0 million trips will take place. Another 3.3 million Easter journeys have been planned by drivers who haven't decided exactly when they'll travel. Between Thursday, March 29 and April 1, around 14.5 million getaway trips could be made.

On Good Friday, the busiest times are expected to be between 11am and 3pm. Drivers are advised to set off as early as possible or wait until late in the afternoon to avoid peak travel times. Alice Simpson, a spokesperson for RAC Breakdown, warned: "With Easter falling earlier than usual at the start of the school holidays, it could be carmageddon for holidaymakers."

"Anyone who can delay leaving on Thursday until much later in the evening or set off as early as possible on Good Friday is likely to have a better journey than those who travel during the peak periods of the day. Lengthy queues can be expected along routes to the usual hotspots like the West Country, the Lake District and the south coast, especially during the middle of the day when most people make trips."

Bob Pishue, an analyst at Inrix transportation, warned: "Although travel times will peak on Thursday and Friday afternoons, drivers should be prepared for longer journeys than normal throughout the entire weekend. To avoid the longest delays, we advise adjusting departure times so you're not travelling in peak commuter hours."

The AA has given some advice to drivers to carry out "a few simple checks" on their car before setting off on Easter journeys. Chris Wood, AA patrol of the year, said: "Easter is the first opportunity many people have to go and see their family and we're expecting the roads to be busy. Before setting off on a long journey it's important to check your car. Take 10 minutes to check your oil, coolant and windscreen wash levels."

Easter travel warning with '14 million' holiday road journeys, record numbers at airports and major rail works planned

The RAC warns that journeys on popular routes could take twice as long as usual, while Bristol, Newcastle and Edinburgh airports say they predict a record number of passengers. Network Rail will also carry out engineering work between London Euston and Milton Keynes.

Britons have been warned of long delays on their Easter getaways with more than 14 million journeys expected on the roads, airports prepared for a record number of passengers, and engineering works on key rail services.

The RAC warned that journeys on popular routes could take twice as long as usual, as the bank holiday weekend leads into a two-week holiday for many schools.

Trains are also set to be stopped as Network Rail carries out engineering works on the West Coast Main Line - which stretches from the capital to Scotland - between London Euston and Milton Keynes.

And at least three major airports have said that the coming days will be their busiest ever Easter weekend.

Travel expert Simon Calder told Sky News that Bristol, Newcastle and Edinburgh all predict a record number of passengers from Good Friday to Easter Monday, with routes to Geneva tipped to be extremely busy.

Around two million Britons are expected to fly away over the holiday weekend, with Bristol predicting 30,000 holiday-goers on Easter Sunday alone.

Airports will stay busy over the school holidays, with Luton expecting to see around 38 passengers a minute on 5 April.

Business airports like Heathrow will see "a lot of pressure today", according to Mr Calder, who added that increased demand has been caused by Easter falling earlier than usual.

"With Easter Sunday on 31 March, actually a lot of schools are breaking up today which is putting extra pressure on what would already be a busy Easter," he said.

On Sunday 7 April, Gatwick and Southampton are set to see their busiest days.

No 'good time' for rail works

The West Coast Main Line will be closed between Good Friday and Easter Monday, with disruption to rail services also expected in Glasgow and Huddersfield.

Laurence Bowman, Network Rail's network strategy director, said earlier this week that there is "never a good time to do the work we need to do", but explained that a lower number of commuters over the bank holiday weekend gives them "the opportunity to do major work we couldn't do in a normal weekend".

"We've got 493 different pieces of work taking place this Easter, most happening overnight," he added, "including laying over 8,000 metres of new rail and putting down over 40,000 tonnes of new ballast to support the tracks."

'Carmageddon'

RAC spokesperson Alice Simpson warned it "could be carmageddon" over Easter and said heavy traffic and "lengthy queues can be expected along routes to the usual hotspots".

Inrix transportation analyst Bob Pishue also said that "drivers should be prepared for longer journeys than normal throughout the entire weekend".

Worst times to travel

A survey commissioned by the RAC and Inrix found that 2.6 million journeys are planned on Good Friday, with around 2.3 million trips expected for both Easter Saturday and Sunday.

Another two million trips are expected on Thursday and Easter Monday, and a further 3.3 million journeys are due with no clear starting date, making for a total of around 14.5 million journeys.

Inrix and Mr Calder both separately predicted that the worst of the traffic is expected between 2pm and 7pm on Thursday when holiday journeys mix with regular commutes.

Inrix added that the busiest route is set to be the western section of the M25 between the M23 for Gatwick and the M1 for Hertfordshire where journeys from 4pm are tipped to take more than two hours, more than twice as long as usual.

The M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton, and the M3 between the M25 and the south coast are also likely to be congested, according to Inrix, with estimated journey times more than double what they normally are.

The survey, from research company Find Out Now, polled 2,136 UK adults.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds is also in effect on Thursday , with unsettled conditions from Storm Nelson likely to further disrupt travel.

The Met Office said the alert applies from 7am until 6pm on Thursday and extends in a band from locations such as St Ives and Penzance in the South West across to Brighton.

Sky News weather producer Christopher England also said: "It'll stay mostly unsettled into next week, with further heavy showers or longer spells of rain, and 70mph gusts near Channel coasts, thanks to the Spanish-named Storm Nelson."

More delays in Dover

Meanwhile, Britons taking ferries should be able to embark without much issue, with the exception of the Port of Dover where French border staff check passports before leaving the UK.

Cars at a standstill on a motorway

Easter travel delays forecast for UK due to poor weather and rail disruption

Line closures and strikes coinciding with school holidays and turbulent weather are expected to hit travel plans

A long Good Friday looms for many drivers and rail passengers who are heading off for a UK getaway, as the Easter weekend collides with the start of school holidays, engineering works and turbulent weather.

With more than 14 million leisure trips planned by drivers over the coming days, motorists have been warned to expect delays on many routes. Additional cars could be forced on to the roads because of major railway line closures, with strikes hampering possible return train journeys next week.

According to the RAC, some car journeys could take twice as long as normal as many schools are breaking up at the start of the bank holiday weekend this year, leading to an increase in getaway traffic.

Meanwhile, all trains in and out of London Euston on the west coast mainline to cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow will be cancelled from Friday to Monday, with passengers wishing to travel diverted via rail replacement buses to Milton Keynes.

Getaway hell was expected to kick off on Thursday afternoon, with the biggest potential for gridlock coming from the south-east after 2pm with many schools closing at lunchtime.

With normal commuter journeys contributing to the traffic, the RAC and transport analysts Inrix forecast peak jams between 4pm and 5pm on the western flank of the M25 motorway between the M1 north and the M23 for Gatwick, including the turnoffs for the west and south-west. A usual one-hour drive on that stretch of the London orbital motorway is expected to take 2 hours 10 minutes or more, they predict.

Most long car journeys are expected to be made on Good Friday, with the lengthiest delays likely between 11am and 3pm. Two popular routes for holidaymakers – the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton and M3 between the M25 and the south coast – could take twice as long as usual.

One curveball is the British bank holiday weather , with changeable sun and rain either luring or deterring more in the coming days. The worst was forecast by the Met Office for Thursday afternoon, including strong winds and heavy rain at times, with a yellow warning for wind across the south of England .

The RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said: “If you do need to travel between the busiest hours of 2pm and 7pm, keep speeds appropriate to the conditions and leave plenty of extra stopping distance.”

She said anyone who could delay leaving until later on Thursday or set off as early as possible on Good Friday was likely to have a better journey, but lengthy queues could be expected.

Network Rail meanwhile has advised train passengers to check their journey details with £90m worth of engineering works scheduled to land awkwardly on the getaway plans of anyone fleeing London for the north in the coming days.

As well as the west coast mainline closure south of Milton Keynes, there will be disruption and closures around Glasgow and Huddersfield.

Network Rail’s network strategy director, Lawrence Bowman, said: “There’s never a good time to do the work we need to do but the four days of the bank holiday, when fewer people are travelling, give us the opportunity to do major work we couldn’t do in normal weekend.”

Rolling 24-hour rail strikes next week from 5 to 8 April by drivers in the Aslef union will halt most long-distance trains in Britain next Friday or Saturday, further hampering potential train holidays. The strikes affect different companies on different days but firms affected include Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry on 5 April and GWR, LNER, Northern and TransPennine on 6 April.

Tourist board VisitEngland said around 11 million people in the UK are nonetheless planning an overnight Easter trip, generating an estimated £3.2bn boost to the economy.

Two million of us are, however, not taking that chance, according to travel association Abta, heading overseas instead. The somewhat balmier Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Turkey are the most popular destinations for foreign travel.

The Port of Dover has warned holidaymakers they may face delays due to tighter French border security after the Moscow concert attack, including controls in Dover before passengers board cross-Channel ferries. About 20,000 cars are expected to travel through the port this weekend.

Motorists on the M6 could face up to two hours of delays today, as monster traffic jams stretching for 45 miles have brought the motorway to a standstill.

Live reports show an almost complete shutdown of traffic in the north of England, with heavy congestion on the M6 stretching from Leyland all the way down to Lancaster.

Major traffic jams have also been reported on a number of northbound routes throughout the country, with the M1 around Luton, the M5 near Birmingham and the M6 at Stoke on Trent being particularly hard-hit.

In Scotland, the M8, M77, M74 in Glasgow are reporting severe congestion, as it the M90 at Edinburgh.

Motoring company RAC has warned that journeys could take twice as long as the bank holiday weekend coincides with the start of the Easter break for schools.

At least three major airports have said that the coming days will be their busiest ever Easter weekend.

It is also not a good time for rail routes as trains are also set to be stopped while Network Rail carries out engineering works on the West Coast Main Line, which stretches from the capital to Scotland.

Work will be carried out between  London  Euston and Milton Keynes, leaving many passengers stranded.

Whether you are travelling via air, road or rail, here are the places expected to see the most severe traffic and congestion throughout the holidays.

Airport Chaos

Around two million Brits are set to fly away over the weekend, with Bristol, Edinburgh and Newcastle airports predicting record numbers of passengers.

Bristol Airport in particular says around 30,000 people are set to fly on Easter Sunday alone, with routes to Geneva tipped to be extremely busy.

Manchester Airport also said it was preparing for about 320,000 passengers over the weekend, 8% more than the equivalent last year.

Budget airline Easyjet also says it is anticipating its busiest ever Easter weekend, while Luton airport says it is expecting to see 38 passengers a minute on April 5.

Ryanair has also issued a warning to travellers that high winds throughout Thursday could disrupt air travel from London.

Meanwhile Glasgow airport says it has hired additional staff in order to deal with ‘three exceptionally busy weekends ahead’.

In many cases, airports and airlines say they are expecting the number of fliers to exceed 2019 levels.

‘Carmageddon’

The RAC and transport analysis company Inrix commissioned a survey suggesting that 2.6 million journeys by car will be made on Good Friday.

The lengthiest delays are expected to be between 11am and 3pm. So, drivers are advised to set off as early as possible or wait until later in the afternoon.

Two popular routes for holidaymakers – the M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton, and the M3 between the M25 and the south coast – are also likely to be congested.

To further complicate matters, a yellow weather warning for strong winds and snow has been issued by the Met Office, with conditions from Storm Nelson set to further disrupt travel.

RAC spokesperson Alice Simpson warned that the traffic and weather conditions ‘could be carmageddon’ over Easter, and said heavy traffic and ‘lengthy queues can be expected along routes to the usual hotspots’.

Inrix transportation analyst Bob Pishue said that ‘drivers should be prepared for longer journeys than normal throughout the entire weekend,’ and predicted Thursday afternoon to be the busiest time to be on the road, as holiday travellers mingle with regular commuters.

Railworks bring more disruption

Trains are also set to face severe delays as Network Rail carries out engineering works on the West Coast Main Line, which runs from London Euston to Scotland.

Earlier this week, Network Rail’s strategy director Laurence Bowman said there is ‘never a good time to do the work we need to do’, but explained that a lower number of commuters over the bank holiday weekend gives them ‘the opportunity to do major work we couldn’t do in a normal weekend’.

‘We’ve got 493 different pieces of work taking place this Easter, most happening overnight,’ he added, ‘including laying over 8,000 metres of new rail and putting down over 40,000 tonnes of new ballast to support the tracks.’

The East Midlands Railway, which runs between London St Pancras and Sheffield, will instead be the main diversionary route for most travellers. A spokesperson for the compant has warned its services will be ‘extremely busy over the Easter weekend’.

Major disruption is also expected in rail services from Glasgow and Huddersfield, with the main trans-Pennine between the two destinations set to be closed from Good Friday to Sunday 7 April.

Dover Delays

Meanwhile, travellers planning on catching a ferry from Dover have been warned to expect severe delays and long queues at the port, with wait times estimated to exceed two hours.

In a statement, border staff pointed to the recent terror alert issued in France following the Moscow terror attacks as a reason for the delays, citing the need for increased security checks.

‘These measures may increase border processing times at the port,’ the statement read.

‘Please be mindful of this when travelling to the port and check with your ferry operator for arrival times.’

Around 20,000 cars are expected to travel through Dover’s port between Thursday and Easter, and a coach  processing facility has been set up in advance in a bid to ease pressure on travellers.

Live M5 and M4 Easter getaway traffic begins with crashes and thunderstorms

The South West is expected to be flooded by holidaymakers over Easter weekend

  • Updated 11:02, 29 MAR 2024

Traffic is queuing for miles on the M5 after a multi-vehicle crash was reported in Bristol amid bad weather and thunderstorms

Holidaymakers making their way to the South West today (Thursday, March 28) ahead of the Easter holidays are facing horrific weather and crashes on roads in the region. After snow hit the region last night, motorists are warned of possible diversions and lengthy delays this weekend with the added traffic.

Long delays are building on the M5 in Bristol after a crash was reported this afternoon (March 28). Two northbound lanes are closed between Cribbs Causeway and Aztec West, according to traffic monitor Inrix. According to National Highways, drivers already face delays of around 40 minutes on the motorway, with congestion growing between junction 18 and 16.

It comes amid waves of bad weather attacking the region, with thunder, hail and heavy rain battering Bristol and the wider the region. It is no secret the region is hugely popular with tourists and as the Easter weekend coincides with the beginning of the school holidays, it is thought the roads and motorways will be heavily congested.

More than 14 million people are thought to be looking at getting away for Easter weekend , prompting the RAC to warn that journeys may take up to twice as long.

The M5 southbound between Bristol and Taunton has been highlighted as a particularly busy route and the RAC has advised anyone who can travel today or early on Good Friday (March 29) should do so to avoid peak times.
