Nature-Led: Yosemite Guided Tours & Experiences

Covering 1,463 square miles, the rugged beauty of Mariposa County calls out for exploration. From the ethereal loop of Yosemite Valley’s waterfalls to eBiking the county’s labyrinth of fire roads, and from moonlit train rides to learning how to rock climb Yosemite’s signature granite, countless experiences await. Yet “knowing the ropes” can be a tricky proposition.  A tried & true approach? Booking a Yosemite guided tour and letting a local outfitter lead the way.

Why A Guided Tour?

Taking advantage of a local guide can result in a transformative experience where culture, history, and adventure come together seamlessly, and where “inside” knowledge of Yosemite Mariposa County’s great outdoors makes for a nature-led trip to remember. Here are the top reasons why a Yosemite guided tour makes sense.

Group of people surrounding a Yosemite Conservancy Outdoor Adventures tour leader

  • Tours cover a range of interests from sightseeing iconic landmarks to fishing and photography, and from wildlife viewing to history and wine tasting.
  • Tours cover a range of physical abilities and fitness levels from riding in the comfort of a temperature-controlled vehicle to weeklong backpacking trips into the Yosemite backcountry.
  • Some tours are ADA-approved, some are kid-friendly, and others welcome pets.
  • Tours are available year-round, with some taking advantage of seasonal conditions such as whitewater rafting in spring and guided snowshoe hikes in winter.
  • Costs range from value to luxury, meaning there’s always an option that fits your budget.
  • Many operators will work with you to customize a private tour for individuals or groups based on your specific interests.
  • Some tours provide add-ons such as free lunches, admission into Yosemite National Park, backcountry permits, and gear for use or rent.
  • For driving tours, there’s nothing better than letting someone else take the wheel so you can enjoy the sights uninterrupted.

Classic Tours

Yosemite Valley Floor Tour

It’s impossible to go wrong when touring Yosemite National Park, but there are always a few perennial favorites. The Yosemite Valley Floor Tour is a two-hour highlight reel of the Park’s geologic marvels, bouncy wildlife, and rich history. Led by park rangers and well-versed naturalists, the guided tour is available year-round via open-air tram in summer and heated motor coach with panoramic windows in winter.

Hiking & Backpacking Tours

Backpacker looking out over granite domes near Clouds Rest

There’s nothing like those first steps on a Yosemite trail. And having a trusted guide lead the way only makes the experience richer. YExplore Yosemite Adventures offers guided day hikes based on difficulty level (easy to strenuous), and backpacking tours from 2-6 days. Perfect for creating a new chapter in your backcountry backstory.

For outdoor empowerment, the guide-owned Echo Adventures Cooperative offers a variety of Yosemite adventures from sightseeing to summit hiking tours and fishing tours. EAC takes a socially and environmentally sustainable approach while providing gear, transportation, entrance fees, and most important of all — knowledgeable guides. Custom lunches are available for vegan/gluten-free guests.

Thrill-Seeking Tours

Yosemite Mountaineering School climbing guide and her client

Where there are rocks, there are rock climbers. For epic granite-top adventures, the world-renowned Yosemite Mountaineering School & Guide Service has been teaching visitors how to climb since 1969 with group and private classes. Whether you’re ready to graduate to the big walls such as El Capitan or want to start small, this Yosemite Valley institution has you securely clipped and ready to scale. For everything from gym-to-crag to multi-pitch and family climbs, Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides (SYMG) has been operating since 1991 and was voted one of the “Best Outfitters On Earth” by National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

The ultimate in thrill-seeking tours, Skydive Yosemite offers tandem jumps with licensed & experienced pros from 10K, 12K, and 14K feet while providing stunning views of the Sierra crest as well as Yosemite icons El Captain and Half Dome.

Skydiver and skydiving instructor

For an airborne experience that keeps the heart rate a bit more steady, Airborrn Aviation Services takes guests up in their Cessna, “Joy”, to soar above the Park’s signature landmarks. Tours are available for 1-3 passengers (520 lbs combined max) and can be booked for sunrise & sundown for a magic hour unlike any other.

With the Merced River gracefully weaving through Yosemite Valley and then plunging the westward slope of the Sierra, Yosemite whitewater rafting is a spring rite of passage for thrill-seekers worldwide.  Several licensed tour operators offer a range of packages from half to full-day trips, with lunches and gear provided. For many these tours are life-changing, and a highlight of their Yosemite experience.

Unique Tours

Ride a steam train at Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

In keeping with Mariposa County’s independent spirit, its unique tours are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

For a pedal assist that’s good for the environment, Yosemite E-biking is the perfect alternative to car touring as you explore Mariposa, the gateway to Yosemite. From the laid-back streets of downtown to the surrounding Gold Rush history, and from exploring its many fire roads to rock climbing some classic Sierra granite, the tour possibilities are endless. All ages & experience levels are welcome!

Trains have played an important role in Yosemite’s history so it makes sense that visitors can ride the rails in style at Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad . Located 2 miles from historic Fish Camp and the Southern Entrance to Yosemite National Park, the open-air cars are pulled by a vintage Shay steam engine as you weave through the forest and hear stories of the region’s colorful past.  Tours range from the one-hour “Logger” to the “Moonlight Special” — a ride under the stars that features dinner and campfire sing-a-long. Oh, and friendly dogs ride free!

Tours Departing From San Francisco & Los Angeles

People doing yoga at Taft Point, a Yosemite scenic overlook

For visitors who’d rather not arrange a car rental or drive unfamiliar roads, several operators provide Yosemite guided tours departing from California’s major cities.

Incredible Adventures departs from San Francisco and offers day and overnight tours that range from Yosemite Valley’s greatest hits to walking among giant sequoias and winter escapes.  Extranomical Yosemite Tours picks guests up from most SF hotels and provides audio translations into eight different languages. Day trips and overnights are available, with accommodations at leading Mariposa County properties.

Serving Los Angeles, California Pacific Excursions gets eco-friendly with its Amtrak train and YARTS bus combo tour, as well as offering bus tours and private charters. Trips from 1 to 3 nights are available, not to mention one-way trips if your travel plans carry you on to forward destinations.

Yosemite Guided Tours: Where to Stay

The main lodge at Tenaya at Yosemite

Choosing where to stay while enjoying a Yosemite guided tour is an exercise in reverse engineering. Figure out your meeting spot for the tour, how you’ll get there from the property, and of course if the accommodations reflect your personal Sierra style. Some hotels such as Tenaya at Yosemite provide their excursions, while some tours offer ground transportation to/from where you’re staying. Be sure to ask your tour operator, and enjoy your stay in Yosemite Mariposa County!

Journey With Confidence

Sign for The Ansel Adams Gallery

Yosemite’s inimitable “range of light” as captured in the dramatic photos by Ansel Adams can be found in equal measure by enjoying one of Yosemite’s many guided tours. From the tranquil snow-kissed months of winter through the flip-flop days of summer, and from photo safari tours to bird watching and wellness retreats, there is something for everyone. Where is Yosemite National Park?

Yosemite is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of central California, USA.

How do I get to Yosemite National Park?

Driving to Yosemite from San Francisco takes about four hours, and three hours from Sacramento.

Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System   (YARTS) provides a public bus service with various pickup and drop off points.

You can also catch a train from San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco, San Jose, and Sacramento to Merced/Riverbank which connects with the YARTS bus service directly to Yosemite Valley.

The closest airport to Yosemite is the Fresno-Yosemite International Airport (FAT). Other airports within driving distance of the park are San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San Jose International Airport (SJC) and Oakland International Airport (OAK).

Getting around in Yosemite National Park

As Yosemite is so big, the best way to get around the park and access the main trails is by car.

There is a free daily shuttle bus every 10-20 mins with 19 stops throughout the Yosemite Valley, but having a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

What is the best time to visit Yosemite National Park?

Yosemite has a huge number of visitors during the summer months with the peak season from June and August.

The best time to visit is late spring, later summer and early fall when the park isn’t too crowded.

Winter is also a great time to visit with fewer visitors, great hiking opportunities and stunning views of the snow-capped mountains.

What's the weather like in Yosemite National Park?

The weather in Yosemite is seasonal but it can vary greatly from year to year.

Spring is generally quite cool with sunny skies and the occasional downpour of rain; summer is consistently sunny with warm to hot temperatures; fall is still warm with cool nights; and winter is cold with frost, ice, and snow.

What to wear during a Yosemite tour

If you go during the summer, bring t-shirts, shorts/skirts, hiking socks and boots, hiking trousers, a waterproof/windproof jacket, a sunhat, sunglasses, a daypack, a water bottle, sunscreen and insect repellent.

For winter trips, bring light layers, warm clothes, a fleece, thermal underwear/leggings, a waterproof winter coat, waterproof hiking boots/shoes, gloves, a hat, a daypack, sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle.

What to pack for Yosemite National Park?

There are several items that pretty much every visitor to Yosemite National Park should have. These include sturdy walking shoes, a raincoat, an extra warm layer, sunglasses, a sun hat and a reusable water bottle.

Depending on the time of year and what you're planning to do in Yosemite, you may need additional gear. If you go during the summer make sure to bring t-shirts, shorts/skirts, hiking socks and boots, hiking trousers, a waterproof/windproof jacket, sunhat, sunglasses, daypack, a water bottle, sunscreen and insect repellent.

For winter trips bring light layers, warm clothes, a fleece, thermal underwear/leggings, a waterproof winter coat, waterproof hiking boots/shoes, gloves, a hat, a daypack, sunglasses, sunscreen and a water bottle.

What is mobile/cell phone service and internet access like in Yosemite National Park?

Cell phones work near major tourist hubs such as Yosemite Valley, but the service can be weak and unreliable.

There is limited or no cell phone service in more remote areas of the park such as hiking trails and high-altitude viewpoints.

What animals live in Yosemite National Park?

You can expect to see many different animal species in Yosemite including:

  • American Black Bears
  • Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep
  • Sierra Fence Lizards
  • Garter Snakes
  • Northern Pygmy Owls and more.

Keep an eye out for animal tracks when you’re out hiking.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Yosemite Tours

Denise was our guide and went above and beyond to make this tour an exceptional experience. She is very detail oriented and knows every corner of Yosemite by heart. She took us to all the important places that could be covered in a day. Yosemite is heaven on earth. The valley is so tranquil, serene and beautiful. Denise's caring, giving nature and patience make her a must-have guide on this tour.

We had a great tour guide who provided so much information about San Francisco, Yosemite and the Sequoias. The views and waterfalls were breathe taking. Memories for a lifetime. The bus picked us up and dropped us off right in front of our hotel. They stop twice for food and drinks, once on the way and once coming back. I definitely recommend this great tour!

Get ready for a full day tour with an outstanding tour from Denise who has a wealth of knowledge and is an amazing tour guide. My wife and I came from Australia and witnessed 6-8 inches of snow and heavy snow falling, what an amazing experience to see snow at Yosemite! A truly amazing experience. A must do.

An absolutely incredible experience! Our guide was amazing guide with lots of interesting and funny facts and tidbits of information about San Francisco and its surroundings. Lots of history and contemporary information. It made the trip there and back fly by. Pit stops were perfectly timed, amount of time at each stop was appropriate given the amount of time we had at the park. I highly recommend this tour!

Hiking in Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada

The tour plan with its walks, chosen sights ie places to hike & visit, and lodging is excellent. It was a tight schedule without pressure offering A LOT of impressions and beauty. A great o really plan. I would have enjoyed a bit more history & information about the different sights. While many travelers enjoy a more laid back experience of look-see-go, I am the type who enjoys more when I am given something to focus on when I land somewhere new. I prefer a guide who is ready to offer good and intriguing information which was missing for me in my group.

Brochures/tour information should be updated. Covid-19 requirements for example. This did not have even a single mention at the welcome reception or at any time during the tour, despite the brochure, and could have saved some luggage. Sunset cruise at San Francisco is another example where the tour information mentioned included hor d'oeuvres and two drinks, but just one drink was the reality. Tour leader could provide clearer instructions/information by stating 'left' or 'right' rather than pointing saying 'here' or 'there' when she is doing this from the driver's seat and guests at the back of the van cannot see. She was informed of this and asked, but complied only that one time. Last minute guests (not me) who joined the sunset cruise at SFO were ripped off, having to pay USD68pp even if it included a transfer to the wharf whilst the direct operator price was USD36.

What people love about yosemite national park tours.

Yosemite tour was amazing. Choice of lodging needed to be different. Too far out of the way which caused a lot of extra driving. A hotel which was previously used would have been better. And virtually no response to questions thru the Tour Radar app. Had to take care of extra nights stays & transportation myself when the app stated that they would assist with it.

Distance: 16.5 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 4842 feet (4000-8842 feet) Time: 10-12+ hours Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  May-October

Upper Yosemite Fall

Ascend Yosemite’s tallest waterfall and feel the rush of 2400 gallons of water per second as it leaps and crashes onto a ledge 1430 feet below and falls twice more before it finally feeds into the Merced River. From the Valley, we will first visit the base of the lower fall. Then we will hike along the famous switchbacks of the North Rim Wall and gain 3000 feet over the next 3.5 miles. Views of the Valley Floor are incomparable, and we will witness the face of Half Dome from several different perspectives. This trail has two very steep sections where we will gain 1000 feet in its first mile. After reaching the top of the Falls, we will have the option to complete the journey to Yosemite Point at 6,936 feet above sea level.

Distance: 8-10 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 3000 feet Time: 7 hours Water Requirements: 100 ounces Best time to visit:  October-June

El Capitan and Eagle Peak

You don’t have to be a rock climber to reach the peak of Yosemite’s most imposing and the world’s largest block of granite. Best of all, you do not need a permit. This strenuous all day hike does not require pulling yourself up cables either. As a bonus, you can take a spur trail to the top of Eagle Peak, the highest of the 3 Brothers. On top of both peaks, you will have grandiose views of Yosemite Valley where you will gaze at Half Dome and other Valley highlights including Nevada and Yosemite Falls. There are 3 different approaches for this hike and we will choose our trailhead based on time of year.

Distance: 17/20/16 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: ~4500/2000/2000 feet (Summit of El Capitan 7569 feet) Time: 9-11 hours Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  March-November

4 Mile Trail (Valley to Glacier Point)

Journey through time and follow in the footsteps of Yosemite’s earliest visitors along the 4 Mile Trail that leads from Yosemite Valley to Glacier Point. Today’s trail is closer to 5 Miles and is filled with views of Sentinel Rock and western end of the valley that will leave you breathless. The hike gains over 3000 feet as we make our way up the challenging switchbacks with views of Half Dome, the Tenaya Canyon, and the high mountain peaks of the Eastern Border of the park.

Distance: 9.6 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 3200 feet (4000-7214 feet) Time: ~8 hours Water Requirements: 100 ounces Best time to visit:  March-June

Clouds Rest

Reach for the clouds from a less traveled trail and summit one of Yosemite’s most impressive peaks. Starting from Tenaya Lake, you will be rewarded by several high country vistas and will appreciate avoiding the valley crowds. Make your way up the ridge on the final ascent and enjoy the views nearly 6000’ above Yosemite Valley as you stand above Half Dome at 9926’. Distance: ~15 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: ~2500 feet (8120-9927 feet) big dropoff after 1st ascent Time: 7-9 hours Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  July-October

Glen Aulin Waterfalls

Drop down into the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River to discover a series of lesser known but no less dramatic waterfalls in Yosemite National Park. Tuolumne Fall is first followed by White Cascade and on to Glen Aulin. Beyond Glen Aulin, we may explore farther down canyon  to California and LeConte Fall. This is some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of Yosemite. Distance: 11-15 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: ~1000 feet (8600-7900 feet at Glen Aulin) Time: 10-12 hours Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  July-October

Reach the summit of the second tallest peak in Yosemite National Park while ascending an ancient volcanic mountain. You will only hike 6 miles and gain 3000 feet on this hike but don’t let that fool you as you climb from 10,000 to 13,000 feet in only 3 miles. You will hike through talus as you gain the summit and will take extra caution on the descent. Depending how you feel when we reach the summit, we may choose to extend the hike by reaching the 12,773 foot summit of Mt. Gibbs as well for an extra 1000 feet of gain along with 4 additional miles of hiking for a 10 mile roundtrip. Distance: 6 or 10 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 3100 feet or 4000 feet (9941-13,061 feet) big dropoff after 1st ascent Time: 7 hours (12 hours with Mt. Gibbs) Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  July-September

Vogelsang Lake

Visit the lake where the birds go to sing and enjoy one of the most spectacular high country lakes in all of Yosemite. No summer trip to Yosemite is compete without a visit to the high country. Vogelsang is one of many alpine lakes and will tempt you to take a swim in its inviting waters surrounded by majestic peaks. Distance: 14 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 1500 feet (8600-10,100 feet) Time: 10 hours Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  July-September

Ten Lakes Pass

Follow the creek from Grant Lakes (the headwaters of Yosemite Falls) to the Ten Lakes Pass for jaw-dropping scenery and incredible adventures. Gaze into the amazing landscape in every direction as we identify many of the highest peaks in the park. On the return trip, we hike to Grant Lakes and take a dip into the water that follows a path to Yosemite Falls and all the way down into the Valley. Distance: 15 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: 2200 feet (7600-9600 feet) Time: 10 hours Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  July-October

Pohono Trail from Inspiration Point to Dewey Point

Step back through history on this steep climb from Tunnel View up onto the South Rim. Discover views of Yosemite seen on the first visit to Yosemite Valley from non natives as we make our first stop at Inspiration Point. Continue along the Pohono Trail for more tantalizing vistas at Stanford, Crocker, & Dewey Points before we make our long journey back to the trailhead. Distance: 10.5 miles roundtrip Elevation Gain: ~3000 feet (4374-7200 feet with gains & losses on trail) Time: 10 hours Water Requirements: 120 ounces + 20 ounces of sports drink or or electrolyte mix Best time to visit:  September-July

TRAVEL INSURANCE

For your protection and ours, we strongly recommend the purchase of Travel Insurance , which can provide you with coverage for trip cancellation/interruption (including COVID-19) , travel delay, medical expenses, emergency assistance, airfare, and baggage loss/delay to protect your financial investment. We recommend those with “cancel for any reason” clauses included. See reviews of some of the best Cancel For Any Reason Travel Insurance Options presented by Forbes  or  Squaremouth . Othe r good student options include InsureMyTrip and Allianz Travel Insurance for Students.

Travel Insurance is the easiest and best way to protect yourself and our smaller non-profit organization against last-minute cancellations. • With 72 hours’ notice, we will retain 50% of the total trip cost.

Fire/Smoke Cancellation Policy

Fire/smoke cancellations are considered circumstances beyond our control.  If your chosen travel insurance does not cover fire/smoke cancellations , a credit equal to the total amount paid will be issued. If we cancel during your adventure with us, we will issue a non-refundable credit equal to the dollar amount associated with the number of days not used. In both cases, these credits will be lifetime/transferable but non-refundable.

Other Considerations

Departing From a Trip: Once a participant has joined a trip and the trip has begun, no refunds or credits will be issued, regardless of the reason for departure. Costs associated with assisting a participant with evacuating from the wilderness will be passed on to the participant. Travel Insurance is strongly recommended.

Infectious Illness Policy (including COVID) : Any participant on any program/trip with any sign/symptom of a potential illness will not be able to participate, and no refund or credits will be given. Many forms of Travel Insurance cover these circumstances. We ask that you screen yourself and/or your child before participating and contact us to cancel if any sign of illness is present. Health screenings can be expected in all youth programs.

Half Dome & Other Summits: Reaching the top of a summit, such as Half Dome, is risky and can be made far worse by inclement weather. While we aim to get everyone to the top, summiting is not guaranteed. Lightning and rain can be deadly on exposed summits, and our experienced guides may have to call off a summit bid if weather conditions are unfavorable. You will not be allowed to summit using a Lasting Adventures permit should the experienced guide decide the conditions are not favorable.

TRIP CHANGE/CREDIT POLICY

Once you book a trip with Lasting Adventures, the value you paid is valid towards switching to another trip in the current or the coming year, pending available spaces on the new trip. Changes to your booking and conversion to credit must occur more than 30 days before your original start date. Changes within 30 days are subject to fees. Once changed to a lifetime/transferrable credit, credits are non-refundable and are a dollar-for-dollar value.

Our group will follow the river’s winding path, offering dramatic views of granite walls and cascading waterfalls. We’ll hike approximately for 7 miles (11.3 km) to a picturesque riverfront campsite nestled within the canyon’s granite walls, across from the captivating Cathedral Creek cascades into the Tuolumne. At the end of the day, we’ll enjoy another great dinner before retreating to our tents.

Expected ending time is between 12 pm-2 pm. Say goodbye to your Yosemite hiking guide, fellow hikers, and Yosemite —or continue touring on your own.

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure through the hidden northern reaches of Yosemite National Park. This backpacking tour is a 6-day journey into untouched Yosemite wilderness, with its granite peaks and breathtaking scenery. We’ll camp beside pristine rivers and backcountry lakes, surrounded by deep canyons and dense forests. Led by experienced guides, this trip promises an authentic wilderness experience in one of the last true wilderness areas of the Sierra Nevada. All permits, meals, and equipment are provided for a hassle-free adventure.

Meet your guide in the parking area of the Tuolumne Meadows Wilderness Permit Center at noon. Get acquainted with the group and your gear while enjoying your lunch. Afterward, our group will go on a six-mile hike out of the Tuolumne Meadows, heading north towards the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne—a breathtaking glacier-cut river canyon. This mostly downhill hike meanders through alpine meadows and across massive granite slabs. We’ll set up camp at the Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp (7,980 ft/2,432 m) next to a pristine swimming hole.

We’ll get an early start and do the regular morning activities — breakfast and packing up. Today, we’ll continue hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail. We’ll trek seven miles through the Cold Canyon before reaching an amazing vista overlooking Virginia Canyon and beyond. Then we’ll descend until we reach a campsite near Return Creek at 8,500 ft (2,591 m). We’ll set up our tents and enjoy dinner in great company.

We’ll proceed about 1,5 miles more past the extraordinary eastern Sierra pinnacles to camp along the shore of Crown Lake (9,450 ft/2,880 m). This is our last evening, so we’ll take a chance to celebrate a little before going to sleep.

Meet your guides

Scott Gehrman

I chose the Hidden Yosemite trip and joined two other Washingtonians that I hike with regularly. What an incredible trip. First and foremost, our guides Will and Bella were awesome. They kept us well fed, educated on the history of Yosemite. Who knew that the white powder on an aspen tree could be used as sunscreen? They made the whole journey memorable. I can’t imagine a better way to experience this amazing place. A sincere thank you to Lasting Adventures and to Will and Bella!

Lasting Adventures and more specifically our guide, Zachary Naegele, made my trip to Yosemite a dream vacation! It was stress-free because every detail was covered from food and transportation to clear meeting instructions and itinerary. Zachary was a joy to have on hikes because he was knowledgeable, competent and personable. He took a hike that would have been fun and made it magical by explaining the history and ecology of the area we were hiking. He matched our athletic pace and often let us lead so we didn’t feel “pressured” to keep up as all the people in my group were not used to the altitude. His calm and confident control of the situation when I got scared trying to summit Lembert Dome was priceless and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better when I panicked! I can’t say enough good things about Zachary and Lasting Adventures. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM!

We went on a trip with Nolan through the Grand Canyon on the Tuoloumne. This was an epic trip mostly because we were truly in the wilderness, and Nolan knew everything about it! We learned so much about “Leaving No Trace”, how to look out for wild animals, and how to protect yourselves from them if needed (we didn’t) and lots about John Muir. We were out for 5 days and only passed about 5 people. The hiking was strenuous, but the swims in the icy tuoloumne river were a perfect pairing. The scenery was like nothing I’ve seen before, truly a magical place. With no cell phone service, constant sound of running water, awe inspiring natural beauty and good company this trip will forever leave an imprint on my heart and soul!

This is our second trip with Lasting Adventures. The two trips couldn’t have been more different, but both were amazing. I’d recommend going out with them anytime!!

Absolutely amazing trip, would recommend it to anyone who wants an adventure, very few other hikers and absolutely stunning views, a total back to the wilderness experience

The recent HIdden Yosemite backpack trip was my first Lasting Adventures experience and first time in Yosemite National Park. I couldn’t ask for a better initial immersion into place, with two outstanding guides, Bella and Will.

The route they chose offered daily wonders that kept my soul and spirit in awe. Bella and Will generously offer playful, positive energy, species and ecology information that heightened my reception of the Yosemite wonders, fresh cooked meals (unbelievable), and an ease of time together on the trail. If you’re looking for an outstanding experience in Yosemite, I strongly recommend you connect with Lasting Adventures.

What you get on this adventure:

  • Experienced, Yosemite hiking/backpacking guide(s) with extensive knowledge of the area
  • A 5-day or 6-day Yosemite hiking & camping tours (depending on your chosen itinerary)
  • Backpacking permits
  • Required Park Reservations
  • Meals during the adventure (as indicated in the itinerary)
  • Personal backpacking equipment — backpacks, single-person tents, sleeping bags, pads, trekking poles, eating utensils (upon request)
  • Group camping equipment
  • Overnights at camping sites
  • All transit during the adventure

What’s not included:

  • Transportation to and from the meeting point
  • Accommodation before and after the adventure — if applicable
  • Travel/medical insurance — recommended
  • Park entry fee
  • Personal expenses before heading into the backcountry
  • Guide gratuities

These Yosemite hiking tours require strong hiking experience and, preferably, some backpacking experience as well. These tours are open for people who hike regularly and are generally physically active. The Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne itinerary includes daily hiking covering between 5.5 and 9.5  miles (8.9-15.3 km)—with an elevation gain of up to 2,250 feet (685 m). Similar in difficulty is the Hidden Yosemite itinerary, with daily hiking between 4.5 and 8.4 miles (7.2-13.5 km), and an elevation gain of up to 2,200 ft (670 m).

During both adventures, all participants should be able to carry a 30-50lb backpack. Temperatures can get very high in the summer nights and it can also get pretty cold during the nights (due to high elevations). Your guides will always be by your side during hikes and will notice if it gets too strenuous for anyone in the group, making frequent breaks. They will also teach you all the necessary skills you need for backpacking.

Here’s a list of the equipment you need to bring:

  • Water bottle or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Lightweight hiking boots or shoes
  • Camp sandals/shoes
  • Underwear/undergarments (synthetic preferred for hiking) and long underwear
  • Spare clothes for layering
  • Light waterproof rain jacket, fleece/warm wool jacket, and warm synthetic jacket for mornings and evenings
  • 1-2 Pairs of lightweight hiking pants and shorts
  • Sunhat, beanie, bandanas/buffs, mosquito head net
  • Swimwear, camp pillow and towel
  • Personal medication
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)
  • Cards, small games, book and other things for entertainment at the camp — optional

Backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, trekking poles, camp pillows, bowls, mugs and sporks are all included in the price of the trip . However, feel free to bring any of these items if you have your own. Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. Make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast and adjust your packing list accordingly. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans. A comprehensive equipment list will be made available upon booking.

All dates listed for these itineraries remain tentative until your guides confirm trailhead permits, usually 22-23 weeks in advance. Although their success rate is high, should they not gain the exact dates through permitting, you will be contacted and offered choices including new dates and/or different itineraries. Should no alternative work, a full cancellation/refund will be granted.

Please refrain from making travel arrangements (that are unchangeable) until dates/permits are confirmed.

You can expect excellent backcountry cuisine throughout your guided Yosemite backpacking tour! Typical breakfasts might include burritos, oatmeals, pancakes, dried fruit, bagels, etc. For dinner, your guides will prepare a variety of pastas, risottos, beans, couscous, meats, vegetables, etc. Lunch will consist of trail food with fruits, vegetables, pita, bagels, salami, cheeses, hummus, trail mix, energy bars, etc. All special dietary requests (vegan, keto, gluten-free, vegetarian—you name it) can be easily accommodated , just let your guides know in advance!

Group sizes and prices:

  • For these group adventures, the maximum client-to-guide ratio is 5:1. The number of participants in a group is usually between 4 and 8.
  • The cost does not decrease as the group grows

Yosemite hiking & camping tours can be arranged for larger or for private groups (with a custom date). Contact us to make arrangements.

Min. age requirements:

  • If you are older than 18, you’re good to go.
  • Minors younger than 18 are permitted to join, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian. Both adventures are family-friendly!

If your group has hikers under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

To get to Yosemite, most people fly into Sacramento International Airport which is around three hours away from the park or the Fresno/Yosemite International Airport which is also three hours away. Another option is flying into the San Francisco International Airport , just over four hours away from the park. From here, you can rent a car or take a shuttle service.

You will meet your guide at the White Wolf Campground for the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne itinerary at 4pm on Day 1 and at the Tuolumne Wilderness Center for the Hidden Yosemite itinerary at 12pm on Day 1. If arriving the day before, we suggest finding accommodation in Curry Village, Yosemite Village, Foresta, or El Portal.

We highly recommend that you cover all your bases with both emergency medical and travel insurance. With medical insurance, if you have an accident or medical emergency in the wilderness, you’ll avoid paying out of pocket for costly expenses. This covers everything from hospital treatments to emergency air transportation and more.

Travel insurance covers canceled flights, natural disasters and other scenarios that may interrupt your travel plans.

We also expect you to respect local regulations and take measures to protect yourselves, your guides, and the communities you’re traveling to.

If you need assistance selecting the right insurance for your group, let us know and we will be happy to help!

Guided Tours of Yosemite

The guided bus tours available in Yosemite are some of the best ways to experience the wonders of the National Park. Two in particular are the Glacier Point Tour and the Yosemite Valley Tour.

Glacier Point draws people to its peak with promises of breathtaking beauty and views of Half Dome and the Valley floor below. The Glacier Point Tour is a four hour bus tour brings you to from that Valley floor all the way, 3200 feet up, to Glacier Point, along the way learning about the fascinating history of the region, its ecology, formation, and current designation as a National Park. Tickets can be found at the Yosemite Valley Lodge Tour Desk in the main lobby. If you’re interested, visitors can buy a one-way ticket that allows them to hike back to the Valley floor.

The Yosemite Valley Floor Tour is a shorter tour, at around 2 hours in length, and is available year round. Guests on this bus tour will enjoy an open-air tram ride (or heated and closed-air in the colder months) through the Valley floor, getting to see the highlights of Yosemite, including a great view of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, Tunnel View, Bridalveil Fall and more. During the journey, experienced rangers will provide insights into the history of the region, its formation via glaciers, and its current protection.

Reservations for either adventure can be placed at any tour or activity desk in the park.

How to plan an epic summer trip to a national park

We’ve got insider tips on the best times to visit the most popular parks, timed entry passes, and where to stay.

Yosemite Falls at Yosemite National Park, CA.

As summer approaches, the siren call of national park adventures grows stronger. However, these iconic sites are bringing in unprecedented crowds.

In 2023, the National Park Service (NPS) reported over 300 million visits , a four percent increase from the previous year. This surge isn’t limited to famous spots; lesser known parks such as Congaree and Dry Tortugas are also experiencing record-breaking numbers. To manage the influx, park authorities are implementing innovative strategies to improve the guest experience.

( These are the 10 most popular national parks .)

From snagging the perfect stay to timing your bookings just right, we’ve got insider tips to ensure your national park vacation is nothing short of epic. Here’s what you need to know.

Best time to visit

Timing is crucial in planning your summer getaway, especially if you’re eyeing popular national parks. Finding affordable lodging and activities during the high season can be tricky.

During the shoulder seasons—early- to mid-spring and late fall—you can expect pleasant weather and a reprieve from the crowds, but there are a few trade-offs to consider. Some hotels and lodges might close during the off-season and reopen later in the year, potentially limiting your accommodation options. Additionally, parks at higher elevations, such as Glacier or Lassen Volcanic , may not have all their trails open and could require snowshoes or traction cleats to get around.

( Here’s why Yellowstone in the off-season is great for families .)

Arriving before sunrise has its perks, too. Typically, most visitors don’t arrive until mid-to-late morning, allowing you to enjoy attractions like Arches ’ Windows or Delicate Arch with minimal crowds, provided you arrive early enough.

When permitted, exploring the parks in winter offers a unique perspective that few experience. Yosemite Valley, for instance, transforms into a winter wonderland —a sight cherished by photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Tony McDaniel, a Yosemite   Mariposa County spokesperson, says the best way to plan a visit is to avoid taking a “checklist approach” to your visit.

“Slow down and immerse yourself in the destination,” McDaniel says. “There’s no place on earth like Yosemite National Park , and it’s best seen slowly and outside of a vehicle where you can fully embrace the sights, sounds, and smells.”

What parks require timed entry passes?

Timed entry reservations typically provide access within a two-hour window. The price of the pass, however, does not include the standard park entry fee. But, a separate timed entry permit is unnecessary if you already have campground reservations, a wilderness permit, or bookings for a pre-arranged, park-sponsored activity. Additionally, if you plan to stay inside the park for multiple days, only one timed entry reservation is required—just make sure not to leave the park during your visit.

Although these passes can reduce a trip’s spontaneity, NPS spokeswoman Kathy Kupper says they also lead to better park experiences.

“Visitors love the timed entry system,” Kupper says, “because it gives them increased confidence that they’ll be able to get in and get where they want to go.”

If you miss out on a timed entry reservation, don’t fret. Ditch your car and opt to walk or bike into the park at any time of day. Glacier National Park adjusts its timed entry program annually, including relocating entry gates beyond the visitor center, where guests can hop on a shuttle bus to access the park.

( Ready to plan your fall hike? Read this safety advice first .)

Arches: Timed entry reservations will be required from April 1 to October 31. The reservation system operates on a rolling basis. For example, June 1–30 bookings opened March 1; July 1–31 reservations opened April 1. A limited number of reservations will also be released at 7 p.m. MST the day before, providing some flexibility for last-minute planners to Utah.

Sunrise shines on the Garden Wall, a spine of rock shaped by Ice Age glaciers.

Glacier: For travelers intending to drive along the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road or head to North Fork, Montana, a vehicle reservation is mandatory between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. from May 24 to September 8. Similarly, from July 1 to September 8, a reservation is required to access Many Glacier between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. These reservations can be secured up to 120 days or approximately four months in advance, starting at 8 a.m. MST. Additionally, a limited number of next-day vehicle reservations will be released at 7 p.m. MST for those seeking entry on the following day on a rolling basis.

Mount Rainier : Two areas of this Washington State park—Paradise Corridor from the south and Sunrise Corridor from the northeast—will require reservations from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 24-September 2, and July 4-September 2, respectively. Each corridor requires a separate vehicle reservation, valid for a single day per vehicle. Note that reservations are unnecessary when entering the park from a different entrance.

Rocky Mountain :   Between May 24 and October 20, reservations are required for entry into this Colorado park. Two types of reservations will be available: one granting access to the entire park, including the bustling Bear Lake Road Corridor from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., and another from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that excludes access to this corridor. Reservations for May 24 to June 30 can be secured starting at 8 a.m. on May 1. Subsequent reservation releases will follow, with reservations for July becoming available on June 1, and so forth.

Yosemite: Reservations are needed from April to October. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (May 27, June 19, September 2, and October 14) from April 13 to June 30 and August 17 to October 27, reservations are required from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. From July 1 to August 16, reservations are needed daily during the same hours.

Acadia : In Maine, Cadillac Mountain Summit Road vehicle reservations are required from May 22 to October 27. About one-third of them can be purchased 90 days in advance, while the rest become available two days before, starting at 10 a.m. Reservations cost $6 and are sold only at https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/400000 .

Great Smoky Mountains : While you don’t need a timed entry reservation to enter this Tennessee-North Carolina park, you will need a parking permit to stop for more than 15 minutes. Passes are $5 (daily),   $15 (weekly), and $40 (annually). Permits can be purchased in person or online . Passes are good for one vehicle only.

( See fireflies magically light up this national park .)

Haleakalā : To park at Hawaii’s Haleakalā summit for sunrise, you’ll need a parking pass from 3 to 7 a.m. throughout the year.

Shenandoah : Visitors hiking Virginia’s Old Rag Mountain must obtain a $2 day-use ticket in advance from March 1 to November 30. Of the 800 tickets issued daily, 400 will be released 30 days in advance, with the remaining 400 released five days beforehand on https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/10088450/ticket/10088451 .

Zion: You’ll need a timed permit to hike Angel’s Landing in Utah. Lotteries open for June-August hikes on April 1, September-November on July 1, and December-February on October 1. A limited number of next-day licenses will be available at 12:01 a.m. the day before. Hiking groups of up to six people can apply for a permit. Winning groups will be charged an additional $3 per person.

( Not a hiker? That’s not a problem at these eight national parks .)

Best alternatives to national parks

If you’re visiting in the summer, don’t have a reservation, and couldn’t get into the park early enough, you still have options. State parks and national forests surrounding official national parks often offer similar views but with few visitors.

( Go wild—and skip the crowds—at these 7 spectacular parks .)

For example, if you get shut out of Utah’s Bryce Canyon , you can always drive 15 minutes away to the picturesque Dixie National Forest . Instead of being shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of other visitors on the trails, you’ll be almost entirely alone while overlooking nearly identical scenes.

Where to stay in or near a popular park

Most NPS campgrounds can be reserved six months in advance on a rolling basis through Recreation.gov, but the most popular sites, including Yellowstone ’s Slough Creek or Watchman in Zion , can sell out within minutes. Even if you miss out, you still have plenty of options.

“For something similar to camping in Yosemite Valley, Housekeeping Camp or Curry Village are as close as you’ll get to camping, plus you don’t need to bring a tent,” says McDaniel. “In areas like Wawona, Yosemite West, and Foresta, there are cabin rentals that will still get you into the park. Outside the park, there are hundreds of more options in great locations and historic towns that are generally more budget-friendly and put visitors close to more dining options.”

( These historic lodges are the perfect way to see North America’s wild parks .)

Nearby national forests and Bureau of Land Management areas typically offer established campgrounds or free dispersed camping (areas outside a designated campground). Sites are generally first-come, first-served. Arrive at an established campground between 10 a.m. and noon to score a recently vacated site.

Apps like AllStays and sites like freecampsites.net and Campendium can help tremendously. Signal Mountain Campground in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park sells out almost immediately, but on a recent trip to the park, I found an incredible mountaintop dispersed campsite, in   Bridger-Teton National Forest . The view of the Tetons was spectacular, made even better because the campsite was free.

After five years of closure, ‘glamping’ back again in Yosemite National Park

After five years of pandemic- and snowpack-related closures, Yosemite National Park has reopened “glamping” campsites where visitors will have access to showers, gourmet meals and a view of the park’s wild back country.

Camping hopefuls can now enter a lottery to experience three of the five available campsites at the High Sierra Camps from June to September.

The two other sites, Vogelsang and Merced Lake — respectively the highest elevation campsite and the oldest and most remote campsite, established in 1916 — will remain closed throughout the 2024 season. Neither park officials nor Aramark, the park’s concessioner, could be reached to explain why these two campsites remain closed.

According to their website, more than 13,000 visitors stay at the High Sierra Camps each year, and another thousand backpackers passing through each year stop for food at the campsites.

“Glamping,” a more comfortable or glamorous version of camping, has grown in popularity in the past couple of decades. Visitors have the option of paying $1,403 for a guided tour of the park with a weeklong stay, or paying $172 to $185 per night to reserve a bed.

There’s been controversy among certain environmentalists who take a hard line against any type of development in the pristine wilderness, said Jane Simpson, chair of the leadership training program at the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club. But Simpson said she is glad to hear that the campsites are reopening to the public this year.

“The experience is phenomenal,” said Simpson, recalling her own High Sierra Camp visit back in 2015. “The people are very hyper aware of their impact.”

As an avid hiker and backpacker herself, Simpson is used to having to carry all of her own supplies when visiting Yosemite National Park. But the amenities of the High Sierra Camps allow visitors to leave behind tents and cooking necessities, as they have running water and three meals a day prepared by professional chefs.

On their website, Aramark and the national park service express their commitment to protecting the environment. “We take our role as stewards very seriously and actively work to protect the resources for generations to come,” says the website for the High Sierra Camps.

Jeff Jenkins, assistant professor of parks and protected areas at UC Merced’s Sierra Nevada Research Institute, said that the National Park Service has to strike a balance between protecting national parks and making them accessible to everyone.

“I remember we saw a woman hiking the route of these High Sierra Camps that was pushing 90,” Jenkins recalled when his family stayed at the High Sierra Camps together. “She was able to get out there too.” First-time, inexperienced campers, the elderly, and families might prefer to stay at the High Sierra Camps because of the amenities.

By having designated areas where semi-permanent shelters are set up, Jenkins said, the “sacrifice zones” allow for a much larger swath of wilderness to remain untouched. “Impact has been constrained to mostly the trail corridor and these areas of the wilderness, these hotspots,” said Jenkins.

The urgency of mitigating human impact on the environment has forced the National Park Service to innovate by adding features like the bear-proof lockers that prevent bears from finding easy food sources near human dwellings, Jenkins noted.

But the debate around these High Sierra Camps isn’t anything new. Dave White, the director of global institute of sustainability and innovation at Arizona State University, describes it as the “fundamental paradox” of the national parks as they balance access and protection.

White said the social and cultural impact of visiting parks also helps to shift the conversation around sustainability and changing personal habits to preserve the environment. For visitors, “it helps them to have greater awareness and understanding about critical environmental issues that we’re facing, including things like climate change,” he said.

The wonder of Yosemite National Park never grows old for White, who has visited several times. “It is some of the most spectacular natural beauty that exists anywhere in the world,” he said. White said it’s the scale of the natural features, and the history of the Indigenous tribes who were violently forced off the lands to make Yosemite, that still humble him today.

“When you’re there, you just feel as a human, you feel insignificant in an important way,” said White.
