Located in Caswell Beach near the Cape Fear River, Oak Island Lighthouse is an operating lighthouse offering guided tours to the top.

 The Bald Head Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. Groups can tour the lighthouse and the Smith Island Museum, which is housed in Keeper’s Cottage.

Piedmont Environmental Center

The Piedmont Environmental Center, on 376-acres, groups will experience nature through environmental education programs, field experiences, and recreational activities.

President James K. Polk State Historic Site

While visiting President James K. Polk State Historic Site, the birthplace of America’s 11th president, groups can explore a museum full of artifacts from Polk’s childhood and his administration.

SparkPoint Innovations

The Elizabethan Gardens

10 Homeschool Field Trips in Eastern North Carolina

Looking for eastern North Carolina field trip ideas to work into your homeschool plans? Here are some fun and educational spots you’ll love!

We’re still learning our way around eastern North Carolina, but we’ve found some great places for field trips in our time here.  Whether you live in eastern North Carolina or may be visiting soon, be sure to add these locations to your to-do list. They are the spots you don’t want to miss if you’re looking for homeschool field trip ideas!

10 Fantastic Eastern North Carolina Field Trips for Homeschoolers

1. tryon palace in new bern.

Tryon Palace is best known for being the location of North Carolina’s first state capital and is the perfect field trip for anyone wanting to experience a taste of colonial NC.  Not only is Tryon Palace home to the first Governor’s Palace, it also has living history demonstrations, historic homes for touring, 16 acres of gardens, and the North Carolina History Center.

2.  North Carolina Aquariums

There are a few different aquarium locations to choose from for North Carolina field trips, but the Fort Fisher location is our favorite.  Complete with touch pools and interactive experiences, the aquarium is naturally a good match for homeschoolers or any kids who love ocean creatures.  We personally enjoy the free admission they provide to homeschool families each year.  How great is that?!?

3. Cape Fear Museum of Science and History

We love the Cape Fear Museum !  Since we’ve only lived in North Carolina for a few years, this place is gem to us because it’s helped us understand more about the science, history, and culture of NC’s lower Cape Fear region.  This is a great place for homeschool field trips even for those who aren’t new to the area, though!

4. USS North Carolina Battleship

Studying World War II?  The USS North Carolina is where you need to be!  Japanese radio announcers claimed six different times that this battleship had been sunk, but she survived and has much to offer her visitors.  I can’t think of a better way to step back in time and view World War II than to experience it through the eyes of those who served so bravely.

5. North Carolina Maritime Museums 

There are three coastal locations, but each of the NC maritime museums are unique and are great choices for homeschool field trips.  From Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge to marine life and conservation to shipwrecks, these museums have more than enough to keep your kids busy and engaged.

6. The Children’s Museum of Wilmington

Wilmington’s Children’s Museum is such a fun place for a field trip, especially for younger kids!  Here you’ll find an awesome toddler room, Teddy Bear Hospital, and Port of Call, just to name a few exhibits.  These are great, but our favorite children’s museum features are the Art Room and Courtyard.  My kids can’t get enough of these!

While there are actual field trip programs available, we prefer just to visit as a family.  We still get to take part in all the museum offers that way and do it at our own pace.

7 . Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center

There’s great work happening at the Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehab Center and, while educational programs aren’t available year-round, there is much to learn here.  And even if you forgo the actual Rehab Center, attending a sea turtle release also makes for a great homeschool field trip.

8. Liberty Hall

Liberty Hall is an antebellum home belonged to one of the area’s earliest settlers and gives visitors a look at life in the early 1800s.  You can get the general idea of what to expect by viewing the guided tour on the website, but it’s definitely worth seeing in person.

9. Moore’s Creek National Battlefield

The Revolutionary War comes to life during a field trip to the Moore’s Creek Battlefield !  This battlefield is homeschool-friendly and offers programs that showcase colonial clothing, musket demonstrations, and tours through the historic site. Bonus: their website includes a ton of free  teacher resources for your field trip!

10. Airlie Gardens

This spot was one of the first places we learned about when moving to the area and we’re so glad we didn’t miss out! 

Airlie Gardens is a great place for homeschool field trips because you can find gardens, walking trails, historical structures, a mosiac-style chapel made from glass bottles inspired by artist Minnie Evans, and an oak tree that’s been around for more than 400 years all in one place!  While we’ve enjoyed all of these aspects of Airlie Gardens, the Tranquility Garden and all of the butterflies there just might be our favorite.

Hi Emily – You might contact Camp Don Lee in Arapahoe or Trinity Center in Salter Path. They have fabulous environmental education programs during the school year and Don Lee does salt marsh (my favorite, actually!) and beach learning sessions at Atlantic Beach. Ft. Macon is also a favorite of mine.

NCMNS Greenville and Contentnea Creek provide astronomy education, environmental education, and outdoor recreation to the children, adults and families of eastern North Carolina. Our field trip programs offer students a chance to move through the trails of our park led by highly trained educators for a hands-on learning experience that reinforces and brings to life the concepts that are taught in the classrooms.

Our field trips are correlated to the NC Essential Standards and to the Next Generation Science Standards according to grade level and subject area using academically-based curriculum materials. We feature four distinct habitats – stream, forest, swamp and ponds – that are ideally suited to enhance the fundamentals of environmental science in a controlled setting. Explore the Museum with your K-12 class during a trip to NCMNS Greenville. Classes of up to 50 students are guided through a series of activites themed after the exhibits on display. Topics include Astronomy, paleontology, water quality, and pirateology.

Explore nature and the wounders of the night sky with your K-12 class during a trip to NCMNS Contentnea Creek. Each trip to Contentnea Creek includes a guided trail hike, a hands-on activity, a planetarium show, and time on the Nature Playscape.

UpTown S.T.E.A.M.

NCMNS Greenville has partnered with the Greenville Museum of Art to offer guided tours of each museum for K-12th grade classes during the 2022-2023 school year. Students will enjoy hands-on lessons as they experience each museum.

Preschool Science

Explore the Museum with your preschool class during a trip to NCMNS Greenville. Choose one of three science-based lessons: Tree Talk, Animals Are You, or Fun with Fossils. Each program includes hands on activities and a visit to the Discovery Forest.

Fogleman Farms is a third-generation farm located in Alamance County. Fogleman Farms is a North Carolina tobacco and produce farm turned small grain farm in the early 1980’s. Since then they have expanded back into produce and the fall ornamental business. In 2023 they opened the farm to the public for a true "you pick" pumpkin experience offering hayrides, a corn maze, a flower maze, a farm-themed playground and a nature walk.

Enjoy the gifts of nature surrounded by the remnants of a once mighty range of peaks. Recreation is plentiful in and around the waters of Lake Tillery and the Yadkin / Pee Dee River. Fishing and boating are popular pastimes. Nature lovers can pick from miles of trails to travel on foot or horseback. And for those who want to stay and take it all in, cabins and camping are available. There's really only one word to describe Morrow Mountain State Park: variety.

Picture the surface of the lake glistening, water spraying your face, the boat motor ahead roaring. Suddenly, your skis give way -- a splash landing! Put on your hiking boots, pack a picnic lunch, and spend a great day at the beautiful source of Asheville's water, the North Fork or the Mills River Water Treatment Plants. We give a tour of the treatment plant, describe the water treatment process, water distribution, and the causes and treatment of water pollution. There is so much to learn that your students may want to participate in the tour multiple times.

The Asheville Art Museum annually presents an exciting, inviting and active schedule of exhibitions and public programs based on its permanent collection of 20th and 21st century American art. Any visit will also include experiences with works of significance to Western North Carolina's cultural heritage including Studio Craft, Black Mountain College and Cherokee artists. Special exhibitions feature renowned regional and national artists and explore issues of enduring interest. The Museum also offers a wide array of innovative, inspiring and entertaining educational programs for people of all ages.

The Blue Ridge Parkway was designed as a recreational motor road, connecting Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah National park. It is also a cross-section of Appalachian mountain history. It encompasses some of the oldest settlements of both pre-historic and early European settlement.

Fort Macon offers public access to the surf, sun and sand of the Crystal Coast--as well as a historic landmark. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, one of a series of barrier islands along the North Carolina coast, the park is surrounded on three sides by water--the Atlantic Ocean, Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Sound. This area of undisturbed natural beauty is the perfect place to explore salt marches and estuaries vital to the coastal ecosystem

The Mint Museum Randolph initially served the region as the first branch of the United States Mint, coining $5 million in gold from 1836 to the outbreak of the Civil War. Rock Solid Warrior is a ninja/rock climbing/obstacle gym where kids can play on obstacles that are from American Ninja Warrior the TV show. It provides coaches as well to give tips and ensure the safety of kids. Regular open gyms are $15, but daytime specials at certain times are only $10. The CSS Neuse Museum, located in downtown Kinston, houses the remains of the CSS Neuse, an ironclad gunboat from the Civil War, and exhibits that tell the story of life in Kinston and eastern North Carolina during the war. Lumber River State Park contains natural and scenic waters, 81 miles of which are also designated national wild and scenic waters. The park's recreation activities are currently centered at two access areas, Princess Ann and Chalk Banks. Princess Ann overlooks a unique reverse flow area named Griffin's Whirl. At the access, a bend in the river opens to a long, straight vista that beckons paddlers to take a ride. Chalk Banks, near the town of Wagram on the upper end of the river, has an interesting mixture of plants, fish, and animals from the sandhills and coastal plains regions.

An educational field trip program at United Skates, that immerses students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. The program relates STEM concepts to roller skating, where students will learn that STEM is in everything they do, even in fun experiences like skating! The students participate in one hour of hands on STEM activities taught by our dynamic STEM educator. After the lesson, the students will participate in one to two hours of roller skating, which promotes great health benefits!

A collecting museum which focus reflects the mission of North Carolina State University and supports its academic programs by providing research opportunities for NCSU students and the citizens of North Carolina and beyond. The collection includes, but is not limited to, textiles, ceramics, outsider/folk art, photography, architectural drawings & modern furniture. The Gregg Museum of Art & Design also puts on 6-8 exhibitions per year in its two galleries.

Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1975, Stone Mountain is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the west by the Thurmond Chatham Game Lands. More than 14,100 acres of mountain beauty offer opportunities for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Let's combine STEM concepts and physical fitness at the roller skating rink. An introductory skating lesson is included-experience STEM with us. Our three hour field trip includes a one hour STEM lesson engaging students through hands-on activities. We offer 10 STEM-focused lesson plans to choose from. Our time concludes with two hours of roller skating, including skating games and activities.

The Bechtler house was home to Christopher Bechtler who is credited with minting the first U.S. $1.00 gold coin. The home showcases period artifacts and exhibits that transport visitors back to the 1830's and tell the Bechtler story. Tours can be scheduled for any day, Monday thru Saturday. The tours consist of a Bechtler tour guide narrating the story at the museum and a trip to the Bechtler Mint site where students bring their lunch to enjoy in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Plunging waterfalls, rugged river gorges, sheer rock walls and one of the greatest concentrations of rare and unique species in the eastern United States are found within Gorges State Park. An elevation that rises 2,000 feet in only four miles, combined with rainfall in excess of 80 inches per year, creates a temperate rain forest and supports a collection of waterfalls.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park is designed to give visitors an unforgettable up-close experience with over 2,000 waterfowl, parrots, toucans, flamingos, and other exotic birds from around the world. Open to the public since October 2006, the 18-acre facility features spacious, walk- through aviaries displaying birds from South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. The aviaries are surrounded by tranquil gardens and lush natural areas, which enhance the beauty of the birds on exhibit and immerse visitors in native North Carolina wildlife habitat.

At the turn of the century visitors flocked to the area. They drank mineral water from local springs to cure their ills and they took riverboat excursions to the cliffs. Things have changed since then, however, the cliffs remain virtually unaltered, standing as a journal of the geological and biological history of the land. See this spectacular formation, now protected within the boundaries of Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

Shackleford Banks, off the coast of Atlantic Beach, NC, has a population of wild horses dating back to the 16th-17th century. Ferry service is available from Harker's Island and downtown Beaufort.

Feel your daily stresses melt away as you cross the historic Dismal Swamp Canal and walk along the 300-foot boardwalk into this geological wonder. Experience first hand the lush swamp forest and get up-close and personal with the wide variety of wildlife. Discover the uniqueness of a million year old habitat at the Dismal Swamp State Park. Learn why George Washington called the Dismal Swamp "a glorious paradise", how the swamp was important in the Underground Railroad and the ecological importance of wetlands in the visitor's center and exhibit hall. All of this and more can be found just 3 miles south of the NC/VA border on US Hwy 17.

The park commemorates the survival of the Cherokee people and their forced removal from their homelands in the Southeastern United States in the 1840s. More than 16,000 Cherokee traveled by foot, horse, wagon, or steamboat along this path with devestating consequences between 1838-1839.

A nature preserve, Weymouth Woods is different from traditional park. This limited-use area serves to preserve and portray the natural features unique to its region. Weymouth Woods is a place where you can look at the longleaf pine forest and see how human actions have affected the environment, where you can learn about rare and endangered species--the red-cockaded woodpecker, the pine barrens tree frog and the bog spicebush.

Ride a train, step inside a steam locomotive, learn how the Wright Brothers controlled their Flyer, and see 150 years of North Carolina's transportation history. Visit the 1905 Back Shop where steam locomotives were overhauled, to see horse-drawn vehicles, trucks, planes, and boats. Walk through the largest remaining roundhouse in North America for railroad exhibits and the Wright Flyer replica. Take a spin on the 100-foot roundhouse turntable. See automotive exhibits that detail the evolution of vehicles in North Carolina. Then take a 25-minute train ride around our historic 60-acre site!

We are a wild horse preserve and educational non-profit. Hosting groups for a learning experience is our foremost goal. We offer plenty of "hands on" experiences and customize individual programs based upon a group's ages, interests, and needs. On another hand, the park boasts its own 33-acre lake where fishing and boating are enjoyed. Hours of relaxation await you at Falls Lake State Recreation Area. Just moments away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Falls Lake is a great way to escape urban life. Fishing, boating and swimming are only a few of the activities awaiting you on the water. On land, you can enjoy walking, mountain biking or camping along a portion of the state's Mountains-to-Sea Trail. From recreation to environmental education, no matter what you are looking for, you are sure to discover it at Falls Lake.

Giant, old oaks draped in Spanish moss welcome you to this special world where broad, lazy Goose Creek joins the Pamlico River. A primitive camping area, picnic sites, swim beach and hiking and paddling trails offer a variety of ways to savor the tranquil surroundings at Goose Creek State Park. Come join the annual Battle of Wilson's Store Reenactment to be held on the grounds of the Museum of the Waxhaws in Waxhaw, NC. The original battle was held March 1, 1865 as Sherman marched from Columbia, SC through NC. Hosted by the Museum of the Waxhaws and the 35th Regiment, NCT. Cape Fear Museum of History and Science is the oldest history museum in North Carolina. Since its founding in 1898, the Museum has grown and changed. It began collecting confederate relics, and now collects images and artifacts that help us understand the history, science and cultures of the region. Today, Cape Fear Museum collects, preserves, and interprets objects relating to the history, science and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear, and makes those objects and their interpretation available to the public through educational exhibits and programs.

The Outdoors is Our Classroom!

Academic field trip programs blend the benefits of outdoor education and inquiry-based STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education while meeting North Carolina Essential Standards.

Time spent with Arboretum educators is time on task. Lessons incorporate curriculum goals and integrate hands-on field experiences. All programs serve as an excellent means to introduce and reinforce topics in a dynamic and enriching way.

Spring Registration will open on 1/9 at 11am.

A link to request a field trip through a Google Form will be posted below at that time.

Tuesday – Thursday (from February 27 – May 16, 2024*):

*No field trips the week of 4/1-4/5, Tuesday, 3/12 or Tuesday, 4/9

*Limited to 60 participants each day 4/15-4/19

Group Size Limit: Groups are limited to 120* participants maximum for Tuesday – Thursday field trips. Students will be in smaller learning groups of 20 students maximum, a parent chaperone(s) and a teacher, and 1-2 Arboretum Staff Members.

*If a group of 61-120 attends in a single day, their programming options will only be 1 guided program and self-guided time, then switching after lunch.

*Due to amount of materials, we can only schedule a maximum of 80 participants for a Geocaching and Team Building field trip per day.  This will consist of 2 groups in the morning, and 2 in the afternoon.

Groups of 15-60 can schedule two guided programs in a day.

Program Times: 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Programs at the Arboretum

Chaperones may incur additional fees**

**We recommend approximately 2 chaperones per group of 20 students.  Any chaperone over 5 per group of 20 will be charged an extra $10 each.  We’ve found that when groups of 20 have over 5 chaperones, this detracts from the learning experience of the students. 

• Consider testing yourself and child at home before programming at the Arboretum, regardless of how you feel.
• Proactively monitor yourself and child and have them stay home if you or anyone in your family are experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19 or any illness or if you have been notified of possible exposure.
• Although mask wearing is currently not mandated indoors or outdoors, masks will be available to use according to your preference.

Join us for an extended weekend of birding in eastern North Carolina.

• Dates: Friday to Monday, January 17-20, 2020 (Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend).
• Leaders: David Anderson, Norm Budnitz, Tom Driscoll
• Cost: A donation of $50 to New Hope Audubon Society. Participants are responsible for their own room, board, and transportation.
