2024 Wells Fargo Championship leaderboard: Rory McIlroy dominates Quail Hollow to win second straight start

Mcilroy locked in throughout the back nine on sunday to pull away from xander schauffele in charlotte.

He's done it again. Rory McIlroy has entered the winner's circle for the 26th time in his PGA Tour career. Surging past Xander Schauffele on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club for a five-stroke victory at 17 under, McIlroy continued his dominance on the par-71 course, claiming his fourth Wells Fargo Championship title and third worldwide win of the calendar year.

With the win, McIlroy moves into a share of 22nd with Henry Picard for most wins on the PGA Tour and is now only two wins away from entering the top 20. McIlroy's victory in Charlotte also represents the third time in his PGA Tour career that he has won in consecutive starts.

One of those occurrences came in 2014 when McIlroy won The Open, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship in a three-tournament stretch. That PGA Championship victory a decade ago marks his last major conquest, and the tension of his return to Valhalla next week has only heightened with his latest win.

"Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit, but I've got a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat next week, but I'm going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself."

The 35-year-old entered the final day at Quail Hollow one off the pace of Schauffele, who was aiming to become the first player in tournament history to win in wire-to-wire fashion. McIlroy threw the first punch with a towering drive over the trees, cutting the dogleg right effectively in half. His approach settled 4 feet from the pin, and the two walked off the green all squared.

There was some seesawing back-and-forth on the front nine with a counterpunch from Schauffele landing on the par-5 7th in the form of his second eagle on that hole for the week. It was exactly what Schauffele needed to push his lead to two, but it was also exactly what McIlroy needed to put it in high gear.

"That was a big moment on seven where I three-putted and Xander made an eagle," McIlroy said. "Xander was inside me on eight, and I knew I really had to hole that putt just to keep up with him, and then he missed his and I birdied nine and then I just went on a run that, for whatever reason, I am able to go on at this golf course."

Wells Fargo Championship purse :  Payouts for McIlroy, other golfers from $20 million pool

McIlroy carded a birdie on the drivable par-4 8th, a birdie on the difficult par-4 9th and rolled in a 33-foot eagle on the par-5 10th to take the lead on his own. He didn't look back from there. A couple nice par saves were followed by a pair of birdies and another eagle on the par-5 15th.

Schauffele struggling with his wedge play, McIlroy ran away and opened a six-stroke lead. After walking off the seventh green down by two, McIlroy played his next eight holes in 8 under and clipped Schauffele by eight during this stretch and gave him the leeway to cruise through The Green Mile for yet another title at Quail Hollow. Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

2. Xander Schauffele (-12): This one is going to hurt. Paired in the final group on Sunday for the fourth time this year, Schauffele had the look early that this time was going to be different. He connected from 12 feet  -- his longest made putt of the week -- for eagle on the par-5 7th to grab a two-stroke lead with 11 holes to play. It was all downhill from there as McIlroy steamrolled Schauffele, who wasn't able to take advantage of missed greens by McIlroy on 11 and 12. Instead of gaining ground, Schauffele actually lost some. That just about did it for Schauffele, who experienced 60+ holes of solid golf only to be outdone by the champion. Grades: A-

T8. Max Homa (-4): It was a quiet top-10 finish for Homa marking his second straight in this tournament. He was brilliant where you would expect him to be as he picked up strokes on approach and made his fair share of putts. If you had to pinpoint the one shortcoming this week, it was his driver; he hit only 27 fairways across his four rounds. He got away with it at Quail Hollow, but he won't have the same luxury at Valhalla where he goes for his third straight major top 10 following his run at the Masters. Grade: B+

T16. Collin Morikawa (-1): It was a bit of a mixed bag for the two-time major champion at Quail Hollow. While not a player one would pinpoint as a great course fit, Morikawa made the most of his early week iron prowess and entered the weekend on the first page of the leaderboard at 5 under. Like others, he backtracked over the weekend with a couple over-par rounds as his approach play fell off with the golf course drying out. He led the field in driving accuracy and ranked inside the top 15 in strokes gained putting. If he does that next week and has his iron play in tow, Morikawa should contend in his second straight major. Grade: B

T29. Jordan Spieth (+2): Guess what? It was another weird week for Spieth. After opening with rounds of 69-71, Spieth sunk down the leaderboard with a Saturday 76 that included eight bogeys. The good news? Spieth is driving the golf ball maybe as well as ever, which will be huge for his PGA Championship and career grand slam aspirations. The bad news? Spieth's iron play has not been up to par, and his nagging wrist injury continues to be a factor. Grade: C

T47. Wyndham Clark (+7): The defending champion carded four straight over-par rounds and never put his imprint on this tournament. Clark's boom-or-bust nature continued this week as he now has zero finishes from fifth place through 25th-place to go along with his four podium results this season. The reigning U.S. Open champion should be fine moving forward and is in good enough form to contend at the PGA Championship, but it's tough not to chalk this week up as a disappointment. Grade: D

The lead is now seven!

Xander drops a shot and Rory McIlroy eyes a personal best. McIlroy won in 2015 here by seven strokes and could be on his way to besting that number. The tournament record is also 19 under where McIlroy stands with two to play.

Wells Fargo Championship Round 2 Final Leaderboard

Xander schauffele and rory mcilroy duel atop the leaderboard on a busy saturday at 2024 wells fargo championship, share this article.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fans packed the course from tee to green on Saturday, and the players did not disappoint on Moving Day at Quail Hollow Club.

Xander Schauffele’s four-shot lead after 36 holes was the largest in Wells Fargo Championship history, but with just 18 holes to go in the Queen City, the world No. 4 has just a one-shot lead with the world No. 2 Rory McIlroy – a three-time winner at Quail Hollow – in hot pursuit.

Saturday’s third round of action featured a handful of eye-scratching shots, a touching tribute for a lost European legend and plenty more. Here’s what you missed from a busy day of golf at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

Two top-five players dueling atop the leaderboard

A bogey-free round is a difficult task at Quail Hollow, but for the second consecutive day Rory McIlroy accomplished that feat with his 4-under 67 on Saturday to reach 11 under for the tournament. That said, it wasn’t enough to catch Xander Schauffele, who did just enough with a 1-under 70 to maintain his lead at 12 under.

“Not as clean. Some sleepy wedges in there unfortunately, some really good up-and-downs, kind of a mixed bag,” Schauffele said of his round. “Definitely made it harder on myself is what it felt like from being in some good spots in the fairway.”

“I’m going to have to earn it tomorrow. I’ve got Rory breathing down my neck,” he added. “I think if I strike the ball the way I did today off the tee and just a little more focus coming into the greens, picking the spots and then going through my process a little better, should be in a good shape.”

The only bogey-free round on Saturday belongs to @McIlroyRory . Tied for the low round of the day, the 3-time @WellsFargoGolf champion is just one back heading into Sunday. pic.twitter.com/Ztc2PthaGD — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 11, 2024

“To play two rounds in a row on this golf course in these conditions bogey-free is a bit of a feather in my cap, I’m pretty proud of that,” said McIlroy after the round. The 25-time winner on Tour, three of which came here at the Wells Fargo, praised his course knowledge for his ability to get around the property without a blemish. “I feel like there’s not a place on this golf course where I haven’t hit it from and don’t have some sort of memory of what to do.”

The two top-five players in the world have separated from the pack by a few shots as Sungjae Im (69) sits third at 8 under, with Sepp Straka (67) in fourth at 7 under and Jason Day (73) in fifth at 5 under.

Hey hey, Sungjae

2024 Wells Fargo Championship

Sungjae Im of South Korea hits a tee shot on the 16th hole during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club on May 11, 2024 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images)

Im is known for having one of the busiest tournament schedules of anyone on Tour and for his consistency. For example, last year he made 25 cuts in 31 starts and finished in the top 25 19 times. Midway through this season, however, he almost has as many missed cuts (four) as he did all of last season (six).

The affable 26-year-old South Korean is back in the mix this weekend and just four shots behind the leader as he looks for his first win since the 2021 Shriners Children’s Open. Im shot a 2-under 69 to reach 8 under for the tournament and avoided a late dropped shot by holing out from a bunker on the par-4 18th, which earned a raucous round of applause from the thousands of fans surrounding the closing hole.

Im was walking in putts early and making bombs from Raleigh on Saturday and is just close enough to make a move on Sunday and put some pressure on the final group ahead.

Walk and talk (and make birdie)

After his second round, Rory McIlroy was asked to do the CBS walk-and-talk on Saturday, and he immediately said yes. The player buy-in for these informative mid-round interviews has been great over the last few years, and during the third round McIlroy delivered again on the mic. Not only was he insightful on the par-4 14th hole, he made birdie with the earpiece in. The four-time major champion still has a lot of good years left ahead of him on the course, but he could be a great addition to the broadcast whenever he decides to step outside the ropes.

Shots of the day

Im walking in putts is cool and all, but his masterclass on the greens and nifty chip on the 18th don’t even crack the top five shots of the day from the third round.

Sam Burns was in contention again for a second consecutive shot of the day with this dart from 255 yards on the par-3 6th.

A 255-yard par 3?! @SamBurns66 takes fairway metal and knocks it to a foot @WellsFargoGolf 😳 pic.twitter.com/E6Halwm4zM — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 11, 2024

Justin Thomas showed off his shot-shaping skills with this gem of an approach.

Bend it like @JustinThomas34 😳 This sweeping hook is a thing of beauty. pic.twitter.com/KaLrQoSqnr — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 11, 2024

But the honor has to go to Akshay Bhatia, who was as close as you can get to a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th, part of Quail Hollow’s Green Mile closing three-hole stretch.

How does this not drop?! @AkshayBhatia_1 nearly aces the 17th @WellsFargoGolf 😲 pic.twitter.com/UIfGXelxKy — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 11, 2024

Touching tribute to Oosty

One day short of his 76th birthday, PGA Tour winner, DP World Tour legend and former Masters broadcaster Peter Oosterhuis passed away last week at his home here in Charlotte after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. During Saturday’s broadcast on CBS, Jim Nantz paid a touching tribute to his former colleague. No words necessary, just watch.
