Mother, father lyrics.

it's story of a broken home.....done with beautiful lyrics and beautiful metaphors.....

Im gonna re-sing this song! its sad to see only one comment! this song is about a divorced family, the son is is asking for help to make this all better. the mother seems sad that the husbands gone 'She sits alone, an empty stare A mother's face she wears Where did she go wrong...'

-'With dreams he tried, lost his pride He drinks his life away One photograph, in broken glass It should not end this way.'

And like many fathers, develops an alcohol problem. Just like my dad... i heard somewhere that the 'seventh son' is from something like Norske mythology or something like that and i think a seventh son is supposed to have powers... i think that the son is saying that he'll be there for both of them when trouble comes '...when lightin' strikes the family ' he will be their defender -'Don't you know that I'm alive for you'

-'Through bitter tears And wounded years, those ties of blood were strong So much to say, those yesterdays So now don't you turn away.' I think this part is saying that when the family was together in the hardships and not facing them alone, they were healthy so they could fight back, but that was in the past. 'So now don't you turn away'

I'm sure there are lotta people like me that are holding the family together, im only 18! its much bigger job than u would think! to all my brothers and sisters,Hang on help is on the way keep fighting! 2012!

I love this song! I first heard it over at a friends house and I watched Deen Castronovo sing it while playing the drums and I was blown away! He sang it with such ease! It was incredible! I listen to this song all the time. It makes me think of my own home that's broken. I love this song!

My favorite Journey song. I like Castronovo's vocals on it as well, but no one touches Steve Perry's voice in my eyes.

I agree that Steve's vocals can't be matched but I too saw the video of Dean singing and for some reason that is my favorite version.

I think it isn't just for divorce. Any broken home sucks. If a family is ripped apart due to parents or kids actions..... any one of these versus can be a cry for help or a reflection on life. Awesome song. :)

''She sits alone, an empty stare A mother's face she wears Where did she go wrong, The fight is gone Lord help this broken home''

I have always felt it was coming from an outside view of a family with a rebellious, teenage son and controlling yet concerned father and the mother stuck in the middle. As often is the case when there is tensions in the family, the mother is often at the receiving end of fire from both sides and often feels she has failed as a mother and herself, hence the fight being gone, its gone in her.

''Don't you know that I'm alive for you I'm your sevenths son And when lightin' strikes the family Have faith, believe.''

In time the father and son clashed to the breaking point and the son being headstrong, decided to leave home with big ideas of making something of his life on his own with no family to help him. The idea of the 'seventh son' being the parable of The Prodigal Son. The mother has faith and believes if given time the son will come around in his views about his father and vice versa.

'With dreams he tried, lost his pride He drinks his life away One photograph, in broken glass It should not end this way.''

Once out in the real world he saw that life wasnt as easy as he thought it would be and that he yearned for the happy home life he had before his teenage years. But his pride prevented him from trying to set things right with his dad and so he lived his life trying something, anything to fill that void, until one day he comes across a broken photograph of his family he had packed away and there he saw the love he had for his father.

''Through bitter tears And wounded years, those ties Of blood were strong So much to say, those yesterdays So now don't you turn away.''

The son, putting his pride aside then decides that the ties of blood were strong and that he could have a relationship with his dad after all. That he needed to set things right as an adult. He was capable of seeing his fathers point of view on things now as a grown man and realised that his father was just trying to protect him from making bad decisions early on in his life. Instead of turning away as he did as a teen, the grown man decides to return home. He's realised that life was too short to hold onto pride and anger and that he needed to fix this before it was too late, ie. his father dying.

P.S. Complete lyrics follows :

She sits alone, an empty stare Her mother's face she wears — Where did she go wrong, the fight is gone:

LORD HELP THIS BROKEN HOME

Hey, mother, father, sister Hey, come back, and try on believing ! Hey, mother, father, dreamer:

Don't you know that I'm alive for you — I'm the Seventh Son

..and when lighting strikes the family: HAVE FAITH, BELIEVE !

With dreams he tried, lost his pride He drinks his life away One photograph, in broken glass It should not end this way, NO !

Through bitter tears and wounded years, Those ties of blood were strong

So much to say, those yesterdays... So now — don't you turn away !

..and when lighting strikes the family:

HAVE FAITH, BELIEVE !

HAVE FAITH,

Madre, Padre

Ella se sienta sola, una mirada vacía She sits alone, an empty stare El rostro de una madre que lleva A mother's face she wears ¿Dónde se equivocó? Where did she go wrong? la pelea se fue The fight is gone Señor, ayuda a este hogar roto Lord, help this broken home

Hola, madre, padre, hermana Hey, mother, father, sister Oye, vuelve, intenta, cree Hey, come back, trying, believing Oye, madre, padre, soñador Hey, mother, father, dreamer ¿No sabes que estoy vivo para ti? Don't you know that I'm alive for you? soy tu séptimo hijo I'm your seventh son Y cuando un rayo cae sobre la familia And when lightning strikes the family Ten fe, cree Have faith, believe

Con sueños lo intentó, oh, perdió su orgullo With dreams he tried, oh, lost his pride Él bebe su vida He drinks his life away Una fotografía, oh, en vidrios rotos One photograph, oh, in broken glass No debería terminar así It should not end this way

A través de lágrimas amargas Through bitter tears Y años heridos And wounded years Esos lazos de sangre eran fuertes Those ties of blood were strong Hay mucho que decir, esos ayeres So much to say, those yesterdays Así que ahora no te alejes So now don't you turn away

Hola, madre, padre, hermana Hey, mother, father, sister Oye, sí, vuelve, intenta, cree Hey, yeah, come back, trying, believing Oh, oye, madre, padre, soñador Oh, hey, mother, father, dreamer ¿No sabes que estoy vivo para ti? Don't you know that I'm alive for you? soy tu séptimo hijo I'm your seventh son Y cuando un rayo cae sobre la familia And when lightning strikes the family Ten fe, cree Have faith, believe

¿No sabes que estoy vivo para ti? Don't you know that I'm alive for you? soy tu séptimo hijo I'm your seventh son Y cuando un rayo cae sobre la familia And when lightning strikes the family Ten fe, cree Have faith, believe Ten fe, cree Have faith, believe Creer Believe

"After Father's Death, Mother Was Diagnosed With Stage 3 Cancer": Vinesh Phogat's Emotional Post On Olympic Journey

Former indian wrestler vinesh phogat opened up on her journey in life, both as a person and an athlete and thanked people who helped her throughout it.

mother father journey letra

Following the dismissal of her plea for an Olympic medal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the announcement of her retirement from wrestling, former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat opened up on her journey in life, both as a person and an athlete and thanked people who helped her throughout it. On Wednesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) released a statement to confirm that, "The application field by Vinesh Phogat on August 7 has been dismissed." Vinesh was set to face Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal on August 7. She was disqualified before the women's 50kg final after exceeding the 50kg weight limit before the final on August 7.

During the weigh-in, she was found to be 100 grams over the limit. Following her disqualification, Vinesh appealed for the silver medal in the 50kg weight category. On August 8, Vinesh penned an emotional to announce her decision to retire from wrestling. "Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness," Phogat said in her post.

Now speaking in a new post on X, Vinesh opened up on how she did not even know what the Olympics were as a "small girl from a small village" and all she dreamt was of "long hair, flaunting a mobile phone" and other things that any young girl would do.

"Olympic rings: as a small girl from a small village I did not know what was the Olympics or what these rings meant. As a small girl, I dream of things like long hair, flaunting a mobile phone in my hand and doing all these things that any young girl would normally dream of," said Vinesh.

Talking about her father, a bus driver who passed away when she was young and her mother, who was diagnosed with stage three cancer after her husband's death, Vinesh said, "My father, an ordinary bus driver, would tell me that one day he would see his daughter fly high in a plane while he would drive on the road below, that only I would turn my father's dreams into a reality. I do not want to say it, but I think I was his favourite child because I was the youngest of the three. When he used to tell me about this I used to laugh at the absurd thought of it, it did not mean much to me. My mother, who could have a whole story written on the hardships of her life, only dreamt that all her children would one day will live a life better than she did. Being independent and her kids being up on their own feet was enough of a dream for her. Her wishes and dreams were much more simple than my father's."

"But the day my father left us, all I was left with were his thoughts and words about flying in that plane. I was confused about its meaning then but held that dream close to me anyway. My mother's dream was now farther away because a couple of months after my father's death she was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. Here began the journey of three kids who would lose their childhood to support their single mother. Soon my dreams of long hair, a mobile phone faded as I faced the reality of life and got into the race of survival," she added.

Vinesh said that this race for survival taught her a lot and witnessing her mother's hardships, "never say die and fighting spirit" made her the person she is today.

pic.twitter.com/8iu2vs21Wq — Vinesh Phogat (@Phogat_Vinesh) August 16, 2024

"She taught me to fight for what is rightfully mine. When I think about courage I think about her and it is this courage that helps me fight every fight without thinking about the outcome," she added.

Vinesh said that despite a difficult road ahead, the family did not lose their trust in god and felt that the right things were planned for them and coming of her husband, Somvir, who she called as her "best friend for life", only proved it.

"Somvir has taken every place in my life with his companionship and supported me with each role he took. To say we were equal backers when we faced a challenge would be wrong, for he sacrificed at each step and took my hardships, shielding me always. He placed my journey above his and offered his companionship with utmost loyalty, dedication and honesty. If not for him, I cannot imagine being here, continuing my fight and taking each day head-on. This is only possible because I know he is standing with me, behind me and when needed in front of me, always protecting me," he added.

Vinesh said that her journey has let her meet a lot of people, "most good and some bad" and added that a lot has happened over last 1.5 and two years that has kept her off the mat.

"My life took many turns, felt like life took a stop for good and there was no way out from the pit we were in. But the people around me had honesty in them, they had goodwill and massive support for me. These people and their faith in me was so strongly grounded, it is because of them that I could continue through the challenges and get through the past 2 years," he added.

Coming to people who worked with her in her career, Vinesh thanked Dr Dinshaw Pandiwala, Dr Wayne Patrick Lombard, Woller Akes and Ashwini Jeevan Patil.

On Dinshaw, Vinesh said, "This is not a new name in Indian Sports. For me, and I think for many other Indian athletes, he is not just a doctor but an angel in disguise sent by god. When I had stopped believing in myself after facing injuries, it was his belief, work and faith in me that got me back on my feet again. He has operated on me not once but thrice (both knees and one elbow) and has shown me how resilient the human body can be. His dedication, kindness and honesty towards his work and towards Indian Sports is something no one will doubt including God. I am forever grateful to him and his enticed team for their work and dedication. As a part of the Indian contingent having him present at the Paris Olympics was a god's gift for all fellow athletes."

On Dr Wayne, Vinesh said that his kind, patient and creative approach towards handling complicated injuries helped her get far in her career.

"He has helped me through the most difficult journey that an athlete faces not once but twice. Science is one side, no doubt about his expertise, but his kind, patient and creative approach toward handling complicated injuries has gotten me so far. Both the times I was injured and operated it was his work and efforts that made me bounce back from the bottom. He taught me how to take one day at a time and every session with him has felt like a natural stressbuster I see him as an elder brother, always checking on me even when we were not working together," added Vinesh about Wayne.

On Woller Akes, her personal coach, Vinesh termed him as the best coach in all of women's wrestling and had plans for every situation. She also said that the coach helped her overcome self-doubt.

"He was more than a coach, my family in Wrestling. He was never hungry to take credit for my victory and success, always humble and taking a step back as soon as his work was done on the mat. But I want to give him the recognition he much deserves, whatever I do will never be enough to thank him for his sacrifices, for the time he spent away from his family. I can never repay him for the time lost with his two small boys. I wonder if they know what their father has done for me and if they understand how important his contributions have been. All I can do today is tell the world that if it had not been for you I would not have a done on the mat what I have done," added Vinesh.

On Ashwini Jeevan Patil, her physio, Vinesh said that she felt "immediate security" with the way she took care of her since the first day they met in 2022.

"Through the past 2.5 years she went through this journey with me like it was her own, every competition, win and loss, every injury and rehab journey was hers as much as it was mine. This is the first time I met a physiotherapist who has shown this much dedication and reverence towards me and my journey. Only the both of us really know what we went through before every training, after every training session and in the moments in between," said Vinesh.

Thanking Tajinder Kaur, her nutritionist, Vinesh said that her journey of weight loss post-surgery for the past year was as challenging as the rehab for her injury she had to cut 10 kilograms of weight while taking care of herself and preparing herself for Olympics.

"I remember when I first told you about playing in the 50kgs category and the way you reassured me that we would achieve this while taking care of the injury simultaneously. It was your persistent encouragement and your reminders about our goal, the Olympic gold, that helped me get through the weight cut," she added.

The Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) team also found a mention in Vinesh's letter, as she noted their contribution in Indian sports' upward journey and how they continuously backed Vinesh amid her injuries and struggles during the wrestler's protest.

"Not a day passed by without them checking in, making sure I was safe, progressing and on the right path. Me and my many fellow athletes in this generation are very very lucky to have OGQ, an organisation made up of and founded by some legendary athletes who take care of us," she added.

On Olympic medalist and India's Chef-de-Mission for Paris Olympics, Gagan Narang and the Olympic support staff, Vinesh said that she met Gagan in close acquaintance for the first time and found his kindness and empathy to be important in big-game situations.

"I want to appreciate the genuine efforts of the entire team that worked day and night for the Indian contingent in the Games Village. The recovery room team, masseuse was something I had never experienced in my entire career during the games," she added.

Vinesh noted that during the wrestlers' protest, she was fighting hard to "protect the sanctity of women in India, the sanctity and values of the Indian flag".

"But when I look at the pictures of me with the Indian flag from 28 May 2023, it haunts me. It was my wish to have the Indian flag fly high this Olympics, to have a picture of the Indian flag with me that truly represents its value and restores its sanctity. I felt that by doing this it will correctly reprimand what the flag went through and what wrestling went through. I really was hoping to show that to my fellow Indians," she added.

On a concluding note, Vinesh said when she was preparing for the Olympics final and was above the weight limit, her team did not give up, but rather the clock stopped. She also noted that the time and her fate were not "fair".

"To my team, my fellow Indians and my family, it feels like the goal that we were working towards and what we had planned to achieve is unfinished, that something might always remain missing, and that things might never be the same again. Maybe under different circumstances, I could see myself playing till 2032, because the fight in me and wrestling in me will always be there. I cannot predict what the future holds for me, and what awaits me in this journey next, but I am sure that I will continue to fight always for what I believe in and for the night thing," she concluded.

Book Review: Moon Unit Zappa memoir rides messy legacy of father’s genius on journey to self-love

Moon Unit Zappa got the question a lot, particularly during the “Valley Girl” years: “What was it like growing up with Frank Zappa for a dad?”

The eldest daughter of the quirky and unconventional musical visionary, who died at 52 in 1993, gives the world an extended, nuanced, often funny, many times painful answer to that question in her new memoir, “Earth to Moon,” to be released Tuesday.

The book’s title carries the power of her life’s journey. Her mother, Frank’s second wife Gail, often used the phrase to scold her as a child — “Earth to Moon, the earth doesn’t revolve around you” — but as Moon, now 56, matures, it comes to symbolize the grounding energy of appreciating her place on the planet. She punctuates her book with clever, space-themed sections, photos and old journal entries.

This cover image released by Dey Street shows

“Love yourself, love yourself, love yourself” is one of her “big takeaways.”

Moon Unit’s hurts are many. She describes a childhood wrought with confusion and disappointment, in which she acted to nurture and protect her younger siblings — Dweezil, Ahmet and Diva — even as her own big life questions remained largely unaddressed by her preoccupied father and volatile mother.

Take sex. She was regularly exposed to her father’s scantily clad groupies, nudity around the house and being able to hear her parents’ love-making (and arguing) through the walls, yet had no clue how to use a tampon. It was the same with money. Although Moon accrued a nest egg from her and her father’s Grammy-nominated 1982 hit “Valley Girl” large enough to buy her own house (“Like, omigod!”), she never had “normal” childhood experiences like allowance and chores and struggled to hold a steady job.

Growing up in 1970s Hollywood meant hanging with plenty of fellow celebrities, though. Actors Justine and Jason Bateman are friends, they know Michael J. Fox as “Mike,” her brother Dweezil dates Molly Ringwald (and later VJs on MTV), and, in one hilarious scene, she chases her heartthrob, Jon Bon Jovi, to a fundraiser only to discover they’re star-crossed. Moon also relieves her stress by attending live comedy shows with the likes of newcomers Chris Rock and Janeane Garofalo.

In his 1989 “The Real Frank Zappa Book,” Frank admits he’s grumpy, has a bad attitude toward “typical familyism,” has no “friends,” and no time for “social activities.” (Quote marks, his.) “I do, however, have a wonderful wife and four totally unbelievable children, and that, folks, is way better,” he writes. Frank Zappa explains that he chooses to treat his children like people — as in, like adults — and believes, “Whatever they’re going to do in life, they’s going to do regardless of home instruction.”

Moon Unit describes those traits left her with a yearning — for more of his time, his attention, his validation. She and her mother frequently clash as they navigate Frank’s long absences, affairs, and occasional bomb drops (say, a possible run for president, or “Moon, I have cancer.”)

In one poignant episode, Moon describes being a child and being overcome with a fear of death. She dares to venture to Frank’s basement lair to seek her father’s comfort and he rebuffs her, telling her just not to think about it. Back in her room, she imagines what it would be like to be her dad and just not be afraid. She listens to his music and pretends he’s telling her a story.

“I listen to the notes of his song-story and my breathing slows down. My body feels heavy now,” she writes. “My eyes close to the night and the dark. I keep listening and let my daddy’s music wrap around me like tangled seaweed, and the music and my steady heartbeat intertwine until sleep pulls me under.”

Perhaps her biggest disappointment is her mother’s now well-publicized decision to make Ahmet and Diva “the sole and exclusive managers of all business” related to Frank after her death. She and Dweezil were given no rights to decisions about the family home, their father or their last name, which prompted deep soul-searching.

Moon says she remains estranged from her two youngest siblings, and for different reasons from Dweezil, but she writes that she is finding her way to healing. She is a mother, a writer, an actor, a comic, an artist, a podcaster and a “tea baroness.”

Among the things that she’s learned is that growing up doesn’t end when you become an adult. She writes, “The way out is through. Make peace with what hurts and head toward joy.”

Ruth Johnson Colvin, Champion of Literacy, Is Dead at 107

Working out of her basement, and with no teaching experience, she created a nonprofit that helped people around the world learn to read.

Ruth Johnson Colvin, a woman with white hair and glasses, has a medal placed around her neck by President George W. Bush. She is smiling.

By Robert D. McFadden

Ruth Johnson Colvin, who founded what became one of the world’s largest organizations of volunteers tutoring basic language skills to functionally illiterate peoples in America and other lands, opening doors to citizenship and better lives, died on Sunday at her home in Syracuse, N.Y. She was 107.

The death was confirmed her daughter, Lindy Webb.

In 1961, Ms. Colvin, a middle-aged, college-educated Syracuse homemaker and mother of two, was appalled to discover that the recent census had counted 11,055 residents of Onondaga County, N.Y., who could not read or write. She had no experience teaching, but felt passionately that she had to do something about it.

A year later, after consulting reading specialists and service agencies, she opened an office in her basement, began recruiting volunteers from churches to be tutors, wrote training manuals, and set up a small group to reach out to residents, many of them immigrants, to teach them basic English, offering pathways to jobs, education and rising standards of living.

It was slow going at first. In 1967, the group, Literacy Volunteers, was chartered by New York State as a nonprofit with 77 tutors, 100 students and Ms. Colvin as its first president. In succeeding decades under her guidance, the organization won federal and private grants, created programs in many states, won national recognition and changed its name to Literacy Volunteers of America.

After a 2002 merger with Laubach Literacy International, the organization became ProLiteracy , with hundreds of programs and 100,000 tutors in 42 states and 60 other countries, offering lessons in scores of languages at homes, workplaces, prisons and other sites. For 60 years, Ms. Colvin remained a teacher and administrator, traveled widely and wrote 12 books on her work.

She was showered with honorary doctorates and received the President’s Volunteer Service Award from President Ronald Reagan in 1987. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993 and received the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, from President George W. Bush in a 2006 White House ceremony.

“Ruth Colvin is a person of intelligence and vision and heart,” Mr. Bush said in making the presentation. “And she has earned the gratitude of many and the admiration of us all.”

In 2019, still working, exercising and playing golf at the age of 102, Ms. Colvin was feted by the New York State Senate in Albany as a pioneering champion of literacy. Senator Rachel May, a Syracuse Democrat and chairwoman of the Committee on Aging, said, “Ruth Colvin reminds us all by her example of the profound positive impact one person can have on the lives of others.”

In a November 2020 phone interview for this obituary from her home in Syracuse, Ms. Colvin, then a month short of 104, offered an encyclopedic valedictory on her life, recalling names, dates, schools and colleges (she attended four), as well as travels, song lyrics, relationships with relatives and friends long gone and a finely tuned appreciation of the diverse world of religions, races and cultures she had seen.

“Who wants to read about this old lady?” she said. “I’m asked all the time about the secret to my longevity. It’s a balanced life, I tell them.”

“When you look back over what happened in your life,” she added, “you see the things that made you what you are. In my case, those things made me a very determined person.”

For 43 million Americans and almost 800 million people worldwide who still struggle to fill out a job application or read a bedtime story to their children, Ruth Johnson Colvin is hardly a household name, and for most of them written accounts of her life are still beyond reach.

She was born Ruth Johnson in Chicago on Dec. 16, 1916, the oldest of five children of Harry and Lillian Johnson, who shared a Swedish surname.

Ruth and her siblings, Harriette, Harry Jr., George and Lucille, were raised in Chicago. Her father, a businessman who was an owner of a construction company, died when Ruth was 12. (Her mother later worked in the bridal department in the Marshall Field’s department store of Chicago and a small children’s store in Syracuse.) He had set aside money for college for all his children. But when Ruth graduated from Fenger Academy High School in Chicago in 1934, she learned that an uncle, the executor of her father’s estate, had reserved the college money for her brothers and would pay her expenses only for a secretarial school, because she was “just a girl,” as she put it.

Undaunted, Ruth, an avid reader with excellent grades, attended night classes at Thornton Junior College in Harvey, Ill. She graduated in 1936, after two years, with an associate degree.

“But that was a blessing in disguise,” she said, “because it was there, in those night classes, that I met the future love of my life, Robert John Colvin, who was to be my life’s partner for 73 years. We barely knew one another at that time, though. We were each dating someone else.”

Still unable to afford full college tuition, she attended the Moser School, a business college in Chicago, for a year. She also became a legal secretary for the law firm that finally settled her father’s estate.

With the settlement, all five siblings were able to attend college. Ruth enrolled at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., where she discovered that Mr. Colvin was a fellow student. They began dating.

They were married in 1940 and had two children, Terrence and Lindy. Mr. Colvin, who traveled with his wife all over the world during her literacy education work, died at 99 in 2014.

In addition to her children, she is survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ms. Colvin and her husband briefly settled in Seattle, where Mr. Colvin joined an industrial chemical company. They moved to Syracuse in 1942, and as World War II got underway he was classified as a critical employee in a company making essential wartime supplies and was exempted from military service.

After the war, Mr. Colvin began a consulting and sales career in industrial chemicals, and Ms. Colvin resumed her education, enrolling at Syracuse University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1959. Her reading had always been eclectic, and in the late 1950s she became interested in the problems of illiteracy in underdeveloped countries.

When the 1960 census results were released, she learned that the problem was closer to home. She enlisted community groups, including Church Women United, which decided to sponsor Ms. Colvin’s Literacy Volunteers. She wrote two training manuals, “Tutor” and “I Speak English,” and recruits were soon using them in the program.

Immigrants constituted half of the county’s functionally illiterate people, and in 1974, three years after her programs took on national scope, she created a training program in English as a Second Language. She also helped found the National Coalition for Literacy to raise public awareness of America’s illiteracy problems.

Ms. Colvin’s dreams of aiding illiterate people in underdeveloped nations became a reality after the merger of Literacy Volunteers of America with Laubach Literacy International, an influential organization founded in 1930 by Frank C. Laubach when he was a missionary in the Philippines.

In succeeding decades, as Ms. Colvin became an international administrator, trainer of tutors and teacher in ProLiteracy Worldwide, she and her husband traveled extensively and established literacy programs in schools for adults, libraries, prisons and industries. As a spinoff, she wrote “Great Traveling After 55” (1989) and “Off the Beaten Path: Stories of People Around the World” (2011).

In recent years, she developed literacy programs in Madagascar, New Guinea, Zambia, Guatemala, Pakistan, Somalia and China. Her last book was “My Travels Through Life, Love and Literacy: A Journey Over 100 Years in the Making” (2020).

In a commencement address at Le Moyne College in Syracuse in 2018, when she was 101, Ms. Colvin, in mortarboard and gown, held up a sign: KDZQMHMF.

“This is my advice to you,” she told the graduating seniors. “Read it. You can’t read?

“Yes, I’m putting you in the shoes of a nonreader. Frustrating, isn’t it? But there is a joy in reading something you couldn’t read before, and I’m going to give you this joy. But you’ve got to know the code. What is the letter of the alphabet that follows each letter in the code?”

The audience spelled it out slowly, letter by letter: “L — E — A — R — N — I — N — G.”

“Yes,” she said. “Learning!

“Keep on learning! That’s my passion: Teaching adults to read, write and understand English.”

Alex Traub contributed reporting.

Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which became in 2009 the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history. Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's ap… more »
