Opened in 2011, this location of the Toronto brewery has become a staple in the area as a stunning destination with great views in a heritage building. The brewery opened the same year that they grabbed the exclusive rights to sell at Ottawa Bluesfest. At the time, the brewery provided a welcome change from the macro beer normally sold at the event. The custom-built brewhouse is an exciting thing to see, spanning two floors in the center of the building. You can see this stunning brewery location on our Rideau Rally tour.

  • 8 Best Brewery Tours in Ottawa, Canada (Local’s Guide)

Table of Contents

Are you traveling to Ottawa for the first time? These brewery tours in Ottawa are a great way to acclimatize to the Canadian capital!

Over the past few years, the craft beer scene in Ottawa has quietly become one of the best in Canada.

It’s worth visiting the area some of the Ottawa breweries to sample some unique local beers!

You can visit these breweries independently (creating a self-guided brewery tour) or book an organized brewery bus tour through the city.

My roommate and I spent the summer trying a bunch of local breweries – often having to trade off designated drivers – before we realized we could do a tour and save ourselves the hassle.

In this post, I will share everything you need to know about the best brewery tour in Ottawa, how to book a private brewery tour with Donkey Brew, and give you a list of the best Ottawa Breweries to visit on your own!

#1 TOP PICK

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ City Beers: Bus Tour of Ottawa Breweries ✔️ 3 breweries ✔️ Pick up downtown

1. City Beers: Bus Tour of Ottawa Breweries

There is only one multi-stop brewery tour in Ottawa. It’s a  4-5 hour Ottawa brewery bus tour called “City Beer,” operated by Brew Donkey Tours.

During the tour, you will visit three breweries  (or possibly more, depending on time) for a tour and tasting. They even throw in a Distillery if there’s time, which helps you cleanse your palette after all the beer.

Some of the places you might stop are:  North of 7 Distillery, Bicycle Craft Brewery and Spark Beer.

The nice part about booking a tour is that it includes all transportation. You just need to get to the starting point and hop on the bus with your tour guide and fellow craft beer lovers.

2. Outaouais Craft Beer Tour – From Ottawa & Gatineau

If you’re looking for brewery tours beyond Ottawa City, you could also book this Craft Brewery Tour in G atineau. During this tour, you will cross the border into Gatineau, Quebec, to taste local beer at 4 different microbreweries.

Don’t worry if you don’t speak French, Brandon the guide is bilingual.

The tour takes you to Brasserie Artisanale Gallicus, Bristo L’Autre Oeil, 5e Baron Microbrasserie, and A La Derive Brasserie Artisanale.

You’ll get to try 13 different beers, and a Quebecois delicacy: poutine! It’s the perfect bar food and soaks up the beer so you can be sure you’re not passing out on the bus ride back.

Pick-up and drop-off are available in both Gatineau and Ottawa areas.

Private Brewery Tours in Ottawa

Another Ottawa, Canada brewery tour option is a private brewery tour through Brew Donkey.

Brew Donkey offers a few different private tours for each area of Ottawa. There are:

3. Sip, Axe and Relax Tour

You and 14 of your closest friends can enjoy a two-brewery tour complete with axe throwing. It’s a beer tour unlike any other!

I did an axe throwing + brewery experience for a friend’s birthday, and let’s just say I never managed to hit the wall because I spent too much time enjoying the beer.

As a bonus, you get a delicious lunch sandwich (or salad for the GF among us) from Sconewitch – an Ottawa institution. You’ll end the day full of food, beer, and laughter – especially if you’re as bad as I am at hitting the target.

4. Y-East End Private Tour

Head east from downtown Ottawa to Overbrook and Orleans to find the best IPAs in Ottawa.

Expect 4 hours of all the hoppiest beers the city has to offer from Broadhead, Stray Dog, and Orleans Brewing Company.

This area is hard to get to without a car, so it’s also a great chance to see more than just Parliament Hill during your time in Ottawa.

5. Brewers East Private Tour

Southeast of Ottawa, just outside of the town of Navan, you’ll get to meet the rural brewers of Southern Ontario. This area has old routes in the Canadian beer scene, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t new players for you to enjoy, too!

This 6 hour tour will take you out to Tuque De Broue, Beaus All Natural Brewing Company and Cassel Brewery.

The scenery on the drive is incredibly beautiful, especially in the spring and summer.

6. Rideau Rally Tour

Hit up 5 of the newest breweries on this private Ottawa tour . You’ll typically cover locations from downtown Ottawa south to the Glebe and west Orleans.

This rally will have you hitting up the most breweries for an epic day out.

Note : pricing changes depending on the breweries, so get in touch with them for accurate pricing.

7. West Ferments Express Private Tour

Head away from the hustle of downtown Ottawa to my neck of the woods, the West End! Out here you’ll find the most delicious lagers and amber ales in the city.

West Ferments takes you to some of my favourite breweries, like Big Rig Brewery, for tastings. You’ll even get to try sours – although I’ve always found them gross.

8. Southern Beir Express

Up to 15 of you can enjoy this bus tour to the southern breweries of Ottawa.

The tour covers a wide range from south of Vanier to Barhaven, stopping at Vimy, Nita Beer, and Broadhead. It’s a great opportunity to see local areas instead of the tourist hot spots.

9. Who Likes Sports Sports? Tour

What goes better than beer and a sports game? A guided tour combining the two!

This unique private tour takes you to two breweries, then to a local game at the TD Place Stadium.

The only way you’ll ever see me at a sports game is with a drink in my hand to endure it – but I’m told others actually enjoy the combo.

10. City Beers Express Walking Tour

This walking brewery tour of Ottawa covers the most popular places downtown. You’ll walk past Parliament on your way to Mill Street Brewery (where I often hung out with my dog when he was a puppy), Spark Beer, and Beyond the Pale.

With views along the Ottawa River , this is a great scenic was to see more of the city core and to build up an appetite between stops.

11. Western Libations Private Tour

Head out to the Ottawa Valley, a place you’ll always find me in the fall.

The area is known for its vineyards, apple orchards, and breweries, so of course this tour hits up the best spots!

Get driven along Highway 7, so you can fully enjoy each stop.

12. La Belle Brew-Mance Private Tour

Have a brew-mance across the Ottawa River in Gatineau, where you’ll fall in low with some fruity IPAs.

The stop at 5E Baron Microbrasserie is a must for the stunning views over the river in the summer.

13. All Things Brewed Private Tour

Want the best of all worlds? Take this epic tour to try local wine, liquor and beer all on one private tour.

Start at Kin Vineyards before heading to the Dairy Distillery for what might be the world’s most unique vodka, then head to Hummingbird Chocolate Maker for my favourite sweets, and end at Braumeister Breweing for a hoppy ending (see what I did there?).

If you prefer working at your own pace – and have a designated driver to spare – try crafting your own self-guided tour.

Ottawa Travel Planning Guide

Yes – ish  — While you can technically drink the tap water in Ottawa, as a local I don’t recommend it. Old hotels especially can have some nasty things in their pipes. Instead, get a filtered water bottle . ( Read more )

For finding cheap Ottawa flights, I recommend  Skyscanner . You can even set a price alert to find out when flights are on sale.

Below, however, we’re going to take a look at a more specific experience to complement your visit to Ontario, and more specifically Toronto – a brewery tour. With an abundance of craft beers to sample and breweries to tour, there is something new to try with every new season and for a luxury experience, there is no better way to sample some of the best beers and ales available.

Toronto is home to some of the best and most luxurious brewery tours, delivering everything from tasters to food accompaniments and much more, so if you’re looking for a new favourite tipple or want a taste of the classics, read on to discover a selection of must-visit breweries.

Brewery history in Toronto, Ontario

The outside of the Steam Whistle Brewing building during the day and people can be seen outside the building

Toronto is a city filled with brewery history. The city’s first brewery was opened by Robert Henderson in 1803, when the neighbourhood housed only around 1,000 people, and can still be found on the corner of Richmond and Sherbourne.

The city’s brewing history is impressive, primarily due to the sheer size of many breweries in Ontario , such as the O’Keefe Brewery, which produced around 500,000 barrels of beer per year before WWI. At this time, the brew would have been mostly lager, but the product output is still very impressive.

Steam Whistle Brewery

The Steam Whistle Brewing Company is close to many of Toronto’s attractions, like the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, Ripley’s Aquarium, Metro Toronto Convention Center, and picturesque Harbourfront, making it an excellent choice for families. This is also the city’s most visited brewery.

In the Roundhouse at Steam Whistle, there is a retail shop, craft beer bar, and outdoor patio that serve as the perfect setting for brewery tours in Toronto. We are particularly fond of its annual Oktoberfest celebration, which is a craft beer event. During the 30-minute tour, you will get a bird’s eye view of the brewery’s bustling production floor as you navigate the catwalks and you’ll also experience the aromas and sounds of Steam Whistle’s brewhouse and learn about the company’s origin story.

Amsterdam Brewing

Located within Toronto’s picturesque Queen’s Quay, visitors of Amsterdam Brewing are greeted by a striking view of Lake Ontario as they arrive. It is best to visit the harbourfront during the summer months as tourists and locals flock to the area to enjoy magnificent lakeside views. The brewery is situated directly on the water, with a large patio in the back, where beer enthusiasts can take in the lake, dotted with sailboats and canoes, during the summer months.

Amsterdam Brewery is excellent for those looking for pops of luxury without the price tag, offering free 30-minute brewery tours on the weekend. Trained brewmasters lead guests around while explaining how they make their popular craft and visitors also have the opportunity to sample some of the freshest possible beer poured directly from the tanks.

Mill Street Brewery

In the historic Distillery District of Toronto, you will find the newly renovated Mill Street Beer Hall, a bottle shop that offers brewery tours seven days a week. As one of the biggest innovators in all of Ontario, Mill Street Brewery continues to strive for new and exciting brewing methods. Those who visit can enjoy a tour of the nano-brewery, also at Mill Street, which produces a small selection of unique batch brews. There are historic elements that create the Distillery District, with fresh tastings from the taps, and as a visitor, you can enjoy something historical and innovative with each sip.

Where to stay

Top of the tower of the Delta Toronto Hotel.

If you’re planning a luxurious brewery-hopping holiday through Ontario and Toronto, there are many accommodation options to consider to ensure that a good dose of luxury is enjoyed between visits. Four Seasons Hotel is a five-star hotel that ensures your trip is luxurious from dusk until dawn. Found in the Yorkville area of Toronto , this part of the city boasts restaurants, luxury shopping, high-rise buildings, spas, and cocktail bars.

If you want to stay somewhere with a historic brewery on your doorstep, why not try Delta Hotels Toronto? This four-star establishment, brought to you by Marriott Toronto, is found opposite the Steam Whistle Brewery, perhaps the most famous one in all of Toronto. Delta Hotels Toronto is nestled within the Entertainment District of the city, the polished rooms and convenient location ensure that you are never too far away from a brewery or bar of your choice. The hotel also offers floor-to-ceiling windows with spectacular views of the waterfront and the city skyline.

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for a luxurious brewery tour with a difference, the abundance available in Ontario, and specifically Toronto, makes it the perfect destination for a trip like this. From Millers to Steam Whistle, there is something to tantalise all tastebuds and with a brew for every season, it doesn’t matter what time of year you choose to visit, there’s something to enjoy during a summer or winter getaway.

Ontario’s First Organic Craft Beer: Spotlight on Mill Street Brewery

By Nova Dexter

mill street brewery tours

Mill Street Brewery’s story started in the winter of 2002, when they opened the doors to their red brick brewery in Toronto’s Historic Distillery District. Mill Street was one of the first tenants in the Distillery District in Toronto, and the first commercial brewery to open in the east side of Toronto in over 100 years. With an earth-friendly philosophy in mind, the Original Organic Lager was the first beer Mill Street ever made, and in fact the first organic beer ever brewed in Ontario!

At the time, it was difficult to acquire organic malt and hops grown in Canada, so they sourced organic hops from New Zealand and organic malt from the United States and Europe. At first, Mill Street was actually certified to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program, as this was before the Canadian government introduced the Canadian Organic Standards (COS) in 2009 – and from the start, it was important to them to be recognized as certified organic, even if Canada didn’t yet have its standard, because being certified means a consumer can trust that their organic claim is legitimate. Mill Street has since been certified to the COS through the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA), the world’s oldest and largest organic certification agency. Organic agriculture has also come a long way and continues to grow since then; in 2018, Mill Street made all of its core beers organic, providing consumers with great tasting beer while utilizing high quality, organic ingredients. Today, Mill Street now sources their organic malt from Canada, U.S., Germany, Belgium, and the UK, and their organic hops from the U.S., Germany, and New Zealand.

Mill Street brews using organic ingredients because it’s the right thing to do; the organic approach supports sustainable farms, communities, and the environment. The brewery follows the requirements of the COS and uses the principles of organic production to brew their beers. The organic brewing approach means that Mill Street does not use artificial additives, preservatives, or GMO’s, and that all their ingredients are at least 95% organic.

Grain is the foundational ingredient of beer, and organic grains have shown to support a healthier ecosystem because organic crop farming emphasizes soil health and fertility, and prohibits synthetic pesticides and other inputs that are harmful to the environment. Additionally, Mill Street contracts its organic hops and malt out several years in advance. In doing so, this guarantees farmers that Mill Street will buy a certain amount of their crop, providing the farmers with economic security.

What goes into organic beer?

  • Water – there is no such thing as organic water, and water actually makes up over 90% of beer ingredients by weight
  • Organic malt
  • Organic hops
  • Yeast, from suppliers that have verified that the brewer’s yeast has had no contact with GMOs and was produced in a specific way as per the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) guidelines for organic production

What does certified organic production involve?

  • Voluntarily opening the brewing facilities to an independent 3 rd party inspector and being subjected to unannounced verification inspections at any time
  • Keeping detailed records of operating practices and processes, submitting them to an annual certification review audit
  • Organic farming and production practices are costlier and often more time consuming than conventional methods – organic malt and hops can be double the cost vs. conventional crops!
  • By using the Canada Organic logo, Mill Street submits to CFIA regulation under the Canada Organic Regime – this applies scrutiny and serious consequences for failure to comply with the standard

Mill Street works hard to ensure its beers are organic by taking the following actions:

  • By producing organic beers only at a certified facility
  • Pre-approvals from an organic certifier for all new organic beers, labels, and packaging
  • Raw organic materials have valid organic certificates, arrive in a clean truck, and are stored separately from conventional raw materials
  • Processing equipment is “organic ready” prior to receiving organic raw materials, wort, or beer – this includes a cleaning program or purge depending on the type of equipment
  • Organic beers must be traceable from raw material to arriving to the final customer
  • Quarterly audits conducted internally, and annual audits conducted by an external certifier to ensure compliance with Canadian Organic Standards

Mill Street’s organic beers have the Canada Organic logo , which means that they contain at least 95% organic materials. This line-up of beers includes:

Tankhouse Organic Pale Ale:

A deliciously complex and spicy organic ale. This brew uses an abundance of hops and five different malts to produce a rich, fiery, copper-red pale ale with big hop and malt flavours.

Mill Street’s organic beers are available throughout Ontario at the LCBO and The Beer Store, and for direct delivery within the GTA and Ottawa .

Bartlett & Associates recently transformed the Mill Street’s  east Toronto brewery into a smart, contemporary workspace with just the right amount of industrial edge.

Beer and the professional office. The two things feel rather at odds with one another, don’t they? Beer and pizza, well, that’s another story. But the beverage doesn’t seem to pair so well with your workstation, the boardroom, or even your private office.

It’s a whole other story at Bartlett & Associates’ Mill Street Brewery project, where you will find bottles (and cans) of suds at most every desk, in every meeting space. No one is drinking on the job, mind; they’re brewing, testing, marketing. Mill Street is, of course, not a location, but a craft beer brand. B|A recently transformed the offices at the company’s east Toronto brewery into a smart, contemporary workspace with just the right amount of industrial edge.

Though the building features ample glazing along the south and west facades, little natural light was previously able to reach the work areas at the core. The designers used glass panels to define most of the interior spaces, allowing sun to filter through the open office areas that hug the exterior walls and into the meeting rooms positioned deeper inside.

Our team chose to play up the industrial character of the building, polishing the existing concrete floors and using raw wood as a signature element that ties the various spaces together. While B|A is known for combining natural materials with biophilic features and imagery in its projects, Mill Street has its own strong and established branding that needed to be expressed in the interior. Along with the wood, the red and white of the Mill Street logo dominates much of the colour palette, and is combined with a charcoal grey.

Just inside the main entrance, the unassuming reception desk’s pale butcher block surface lends a modern Scandinavian feeling. Along the wall, an inset grid of rough wood beer barrel tops contrasts the sleekness of the desk, each lid emblazoned with the names of the brand’s most popular brews.

In the open office beyond, the workstations feature durable, seamless surfaces that offer the look and texture of hand-hewn wood and create the impression of the staff working at a series of long harvest tables. The desks’ powder-coated metal bases coordinate with the glossy black framing of the glass walls and are in keeping with the industrial theme. Yet you’d never guess you were just steps away from the actual brewery.

In the adjacent meeting rooms, as well as in those upstairs, minimal black-topped tables stand on elegant maple legs. “The furniture, the glass, most of it is very sleek, very polished,” says lead designer Inger Bartlett . “The wood elements, particularly the more textural ones, make the space feel more comfortable and slightly laid back, which suits the brand perfectly.”

On the upper level, a second reception desk – sitting in front of a playful graffiti-style mural – greets visitors heading to the Town Hall space. A series of meeting rooms lines the hallway leading to this generous gathering space that is modelled, naturally, after a bar. Each of these rooms on the second floor are framed in the same glass partitions used downstairs. Along the wall that defines the bar two extra-wide glass panels evoke a pair of industrial garage doors enclosing the airy volume.

Offering plenty of open floor space for seated assemblies, Mill Street’s in-house taproom is an ideal venue for events of all kinds, from all-staff meetings or parties to educational presentations and new product launches or tastings (the company stays true to its craft brewery origins by regularly changing up its product line with seasonal offerings).

Embellished with another graffiti mural, the space boasts a long Caesarstone bar, with a front wrapped in a patchwork of textural wood offcuts and a top in the same pale butcher block used on both reception desks. Fitted with large screens and a projector, the bar can be filled with grey stackable chairs for presentations, or the extra seating can be easily carted away for more casual events.

“There is a real range of people working at this site, from the office staff to the brewmasters and other employees who suit up to work in the brewery every day,” explains Bartlett.  “This is a place where they all can come together as a community.”

When was the project completed?

January 2020

How many employees work here?

The main floor open office hosts 47 staff members, however the shared spaces such as the Town Hall and café are also used by employees who work strictly in the adjoining plant.

What is average daily population?

Many of the staff members who work in the open plan office also spend much of their work week in the on the floor in the production facility, so the number of people working in the office fluctuates regularly.

Describe the work space type.

The space is open plan.

What kind of meeting spaces are provided?

In addition to the Town Hall, there are thirteen meeting rooms spread over the two floors of the project, accommodating groups between four and twelve people.

What other kinds of support or amenity spaces are provided?

The Town Hall on the second floor is roomy and flexible enough to accommodate a variety of events for Mill Street. The space provides a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for tastings, client or staff parties, and even lunches. It’s also an ideal venue for training sessions and all-staff meetings with as many as 100 seated attendees, once the space is filled with the Global Popcorn chairs that stack up and roll away when not in use.

There is also an office café on the main level, which all staff at the brewery have access to.

How is the space changing/adapting as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Deemed an essential business, Mill Street’s beer making facilities have remained open throughout the first and second wave lockdowns that have been implemented in Toronto. (And we think the company deserves a shout out for their quick response to a shortage of hand sanitizer in the very early days of the pandemic. The brand dedicated some of its brewing facilities to making the much-needed product, which they distributed – free of charge – to local restaurants.)

B|A’s design accommodates 47 staff members who required workstations when we wrapped the project, however our plans also include a second open office area, with 42 additional workstations, on the second floor. These spots will eventually be filled by new employees or staff moved from other offices in the city. In the meantime, the extra space is available to support social distancing among employees when needed.

Was the C-suite involved in the project planning and design process? If so, how?

All staff – including some who previously had private offices – are accommodated in the open plan work areas, including several employees who split their time between the office areas and the actual brewing facility.

Was there any emphasis or requirements on programming for health and wellbeing initiatives for employees?

An important goal was to improve employee wellbeing by providing more natural light. There were previously a handful of private office that blocked the sunlight from a majority of the workstations, which were already defined by high walled cubicles. Our design eliminates private offices and places all employees in open plan space, directly in front of a full wall of windows. The meeting rooms also enjoy ample daylight, as do the café and Town Hall, while the interior rooms are reserved for a kitchen that services the latter, as well as washrooms and storage.

What products or service solutions are making the biggest impact in your space?

It’s a large space with a lot of repeating elements, but overall the glass wall panels, which are PC350 office fronts, had the biggest impact in completely transforming the space. The office areas all previously felt so dark and uninviting and now natural light has such a strong presence in each and every space – even on a dreary, rainy day like the one we photographed the space on. The sleek black framing speaks to the industrial character of the building and the horizontal mullions create the impression of a wider space, which adds to the airy feeling.

What kind of branding elements were incorporated into the design?

The building’s two levels each have their own main entrance and Mill Street’s familiar red and white branding add colour and character to each. The main level’s butcher block reception desk sits in front of a wall emblazoned with the company logo, scaled to fit the diminutive main entrance. A charcoal wall standing perpendicular to the desk is inset with a collection of beer barrels, each printed with the logo for one of the brand’s signature brews.

Upstairs a black, white and red Mill Street graffiti mural anchors the welcome desk, which boasts coordinating materiality with the desk on the main level.  A second Mill Street mural adds a pop of colour to the back wall of the Town Hall, at the far end of the bar.

mill street brewery tours

What is the most unique feature of the space?

While plenty of modern offices now feature Town Hall spaces, Mill Street’s is unique to the brand. The taproom-inspired space is made to be an inviting venue not only for office employees who sit at a desk all day, but also for an even larger number of staffers who suit up in safety gear each day to work in the plant.  Like the meeting rooms and office areas, this space is professional and polished, but laid-back enough to feel comfortable – whether you show up in a suit, or a safety vest and hard hat.
