Border to border - skiing event.

Developed in conjunction with Ext-Joom.com

Border to Border ski is over 400 km long guided ski tour in Northern Finland. The route follows near the Arctic Circle from Russian border to Swedish border. The event is on the bucket list of every enthusiastic cross-country skier. Welcome to join us!

  • 39. Border to Border skiing will be moved to March 2025

Border to Border -ski Committee has assessed situation of 39 th Border to Border -skiing.

Regrettably, we have encountered great challenges regarding accommodation in the Syöte area. Our longstanding accommodation partner has informed us that future and continuation of their business is uncertain, and the hotel in question has been put up for public sale. Unfortunately, this means that in this situation accommodation for our skiers in March 2024 cannot be guaranteed at that accommodation. After being informed of this situation, we have been trying for several weeks to find alternative accommodation in Syöte or its surrounding areas, but without success. March is the best season for ski resorts and therefore none of the other suitable accommodations in the area do not have enough rooms for our needs.

Every event, also Border to Border skiing, has certain time limits in terms of arrangements, during which the organizer must be sure of certain things. Accommodation is one of the most important of these.

In this situation, the Border to Border Skiing Committee has considered that safest option is to move the 39 th Border to Border skiing to March 2025. As a responsible event organizer, we cannot put ourselves or our skiers in a situation where we would continue to organize and sell the event without accommodation necessary accommodation.

This decision was not easy and we regretfully apologize any inconvenience this may cause for everyone involved.

Despite the heavy disappointment, we look to the future and start preparations for 2025 as soon as possible. We will contact registered skiers by email.

  • Registration 39. Border to Border -skiing opens on 4.9.2023 at 08:00 Finnish time.

In 2024, Border to Border skiing will exceptionally be skied with smaller groups. The maximum size of the groups will be 42-45 skiers per group.  The groups travel by one bus, which is why we hope that the participants will be in good skiing condition and have a brisk attitude. For longer ski days, there will be separate shuttle buses to shorten potential waiting time for skiers. You can expect same familiar Border to Border -skiing experience and meeting amazing people from all around the world.

1 st Skiing day

The first day of skiing starts with a hearty breakfast after enjoying Lake Suorajärvi, about 20 km from the Russian border. Day’s skiing is about 33km and it will end to Ruka, the accommodation is Scandic Rukahovi . The ski trip winds through Ruka's rugged landscape, where a hot soup lunch is also served.

2 nd Skiing day

The second day of skiing is about 43 kilometers long and ends in Taivalkoski. Accommodation and meals are taken care of  by Ruska , During the ski day you can enjoy beautiful natural landscapes and taste Särkelä's delicious salmon soup. In Taivalkoski, you can visit a shop and pharmacy, as they are only about 1.4 km away.

3 rd Skiing day

The third day of skiing is 58 kilometers long. Many skiers find the scenery particularly beautiful on the third day of skiing, as the route partly winds through the Syöte National Park. However, the last kilometers do not let the skier go easy, as at the end there is a climb to the Pikku-Syöte fell hotel . Lunch is served in the wilderness scenery of Pirinlampi.

4 th Skiing day

The fourth day of skiing measures the grit and fitness of a cross-country skier, as the total distance covered is a whopping 88kilometers. The skiing trip starts with a fast descent from Pikku-Syöte and ends with long swampy landscapes in Ranua. Stay overnight at   Gasthaus Ranua in Ranua

5 th Skiing day

The skiing day is 46 kilometers long, but after the last long day it can feel tough. On the fifth day of skiing, lunch is served at Ruona village hall/school. Accommodation is also arranged in Ruona that is legendary place among RR-skiers.

6 th Skiing day

On the sixth day of skiing, the journey continues towards the Swedish border for a total of 60 kilometres. Lunch is served in Keminmaa. For accommodation, the group is transported to Kemi, where accommodation is provided in the nostalgic and cosy Hotel Merihovi. After the sauna and meals, a small restorative evening walk before the last day is probably in order.

7 th Skiing day

On the seventh and also the last day of skiing, there are 55 kilometers left. There are snacks waiting at the finish line and a sauna at the hotel. The last night in Tornio is spent in  traditional style at Park Hotel Tornio , where you can also enjoy a dinner together. After dinner, there will be an evening party where prizes will be handed out and performances by skiers will be seen.

Next morning after last skiing day, it's time to go home!  Please remember that flights can be booked from Kemi at 9.00, from Oulu at 11.00 and from Kuusamo after 15.00 on the day of departure.

Border-to-Border Nordics Ski Tour 2024

Border-to-Border Nordics Ski Tour 2024

We start our tour from the Russian border crossing station in the tiny town of Salla, just north of the Arctic Circle in Eastern Finland. In the next eight days, we will ski across Finland’s magic Lapland and reach the Swedish border in Muonio. Next, we will enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Swedish Lappland and cross the border to Norway in Riksgransen. Finally, on the last day, we ski down the North-Atlantic coast near Narvik.

During the 14 days, we ski approximately 800km, or 50-70 kilometers daily. We ski mainly along snowmobile tracks, where a local snowmobilist drives a skitrack the same day. Some days we pass ski resorts and can utilize their permanent skitracks (in perfect condition). Free technic skiing is possible in some parts of the route.

Our service van/coach moves your luggage to the next accommodation and takes care of the group’s daily breaks. So you carry only your light everyday backpack and enjoy 100% cross-country skiing in Lapland scenery.

Finland’s Eastern Wilderness

Detailed program.

Winter bestseller - 100 km in five skiing days. This guided cross-country skiing tour takes you to the beautiful Hossa national park and to the remote eastern area of Finland. You will ski through a wilderness of pristine untouched nature with very few other skiers. To give you the best experience, the maximum group size is 12 skiers, plus an expert tour leader. If you are lucky, and conditions are right, you might witness the Northern Lights’ dancing in the night sky to top off your skiing week!

Tour highlights: • Pristine wilderness - a real escape to the nature • Picnics around an open fire • The snow-white landscape • Evening saunas • Hossa national park

What's included?

  • 6 nights accommodation in rooms for 2–4 persons with shared facilities (on days 3 and 4 most rooms with private facilities)
  • 6 x breakfast, 4 x outdoor lunch and 1 x lunch, 6 x dinner (on arrival night evening snack on late arrivals), 5 x afternoon coffee/tea with snack
  • English speaking skiing guide
  • Snowmobile guide who makes the track on days 3-6 (exclusively for this group) and prepares outdoor lunches
  • Luggage transportation between accommodations
  • Single-timed group airport transfers
  • 5 x sauna, 1 x possibility for ice-swimming
  • Bedlinen and bath towels

Day 1 Arrival

Arrival at Kuusamo airport where your guide will welcome you. Transfer (1 hour) to Rajakartano guesthouse located in close proximity to Hossa national park.

Day 2 Day tour in Hossa 17 km

After breakfast we start our skiing week along well-prepared tracks of Hossa national park whose nature is dominated by handsome pine heathlands, ridge-lines, small lakes and streams. The terrain is variable with a few steep but mainly short up hills. We eat lunch at the Hossa Visitor Centre, which also has a small souvenir shop. It is said that there’s nothing more Finnish than sauna and on return to the accommodation you can relax in the steaming hot, traditional Finnish sauna. The more adventurous amongst us can even try ice swimming!

Day 3 Day tour at Martinselkonen 17 km

This morning we will take a short car transfer (45 min) to Martinselkonen wilderness centre where we will stay for the next two nights. Our circular tour takes us north through Martinselkonen nature reserve which has been set up to protect the Finnish wilderness, especially the swamp areas with its many birds and insects. Martinselkonen has mires, ponds and lakes, ancient forests and spruce trees draped in beard lichen. The terrain today is mainly flat, like it will be for the rest of the week. There is a picnic stop at one of the wilderness huts operated by the Finnish Forest and Park Service.

Day 4 Day tour at Martinselkonen 23 km

Today we take another tour in Martinselkonen area, this time heading south. We will ski over frozen lakes and swamps and through forests covered in a deep, white, snowy blanket. The silence is almost tangible, the only the sound is that of skis and poles touching the snow.

Day 5 Martinselkonen–Arola 22 km

It’s time to say goodbye to our hosts at Martinselkonen and head north through the nature reserve. These ancient forests are home to a brown bear population, however in winter they are hibernating. Also, other Finnish large carnivores - wolves, lynxes and wolverines - inhabit the area but they are extremely elusive, and we may only spot their tracks in the snow. In the afternoon we will arrive at Arola guest house, famous for delicious local food.

Day 6 Day tour at Arola 20 km

For our last day, we will take a day tour around Arola. At the half-way point, we will once more enjoy hot soup and a selection of sandwiches around an open fire. In the afternoon we return to Arola to enjoy its cosy atmosphere and the warm hospitality of our hosts. There is a chance to have a final sauna, then after that, a well-deserved farewell dinner made from local ingredients will be served in the traditional log house.

Day 7 Return

Breakfast and transport to the Kuusamo airport.

Such an enjoyable ski tour in Finland’s Eastern Wilderness! Big skies, beautiful forests and plenty of snow. Anna was a fantastic guide and leader, managing our mixed-ability group with humour, encouragement and clear direction. Kasu’s tracks were well-judged: we had scenic, fun and safe routes each day. I loved the lunch routine: fire, reindeer skins, soup! And the accommodation really added to the experience, each of our three bases was welcoming and distinctive. The food exceeded expectations at every meal, all our hosts took good care of us. Thank you, it couldn’t have been a better holiday. Jenny, Scotland

The Eastern Wilderness tour gave a superb introduction to cross-country skiing in Finland. The staff were excellent giving good subtle leadership, support and insight in to environment we were skiing through. Wilf, UK.

This was an utterly inspirational experience with an outstanding guide Maarit. I was new to all the experiences and doing this was made possible by the great support and beautiful nature of our guide. Skiing to reshape the mind and body and sauna to thrill it and relax so thoroughly every might. Thank you! I’m coming back with all my friends.

A great cross-country skiing adventure in the remote Finnish wilderness with wonderful landscape. Good level of skiing skills and true grit are required to have a great time. We had the best guides who really looked after us. I recommend this tour.

Best Tour ever👍

2023 The skiing was unrivaled. I have skied for many years in many places and this experience of skiing through Finland’s eastern wilderness has risen to the very top of all those experiences… Just incredible! While not fancy or upscale, all 3 of the guesthouses we stayed in were clean and comfortable and were surrounded by a beautiful natural environment. And they all had excellent saunas, which were enjoyed by all of us each day.

Lunches on the trail around an open fire were a special treat.

A highly recommendable experience, beautiful landscape and people, fell in love with Finland there.

Warm recomendations for Upitrek and our guide Maarit. I enjoyed skiing even though I’m not a great skier. 🙂 Well planned, safe, fun and beautiful trip in clean nature. Quietness. Sauna. Local food. Good company. Stories from the past. Perfect. Irene, Finland

2020 A must do if you like cross-country skiing, enjoying the snow and the forest and relaxing in a sauna before refreshing the body in an ice hole. Very nice vacation. I feel very happy! Pierre, France

A well considered itinerary with interesting skiing in an unusual environment. A warm welcome to everywhere and friendly and attentive guide. Tim, UK

Wonderful hosts, superb hospitality, delicious food and great company. This trip exceeded my expectations in all ways. I feel like I’ve been on a great adventure plus a much-needed break from everyday life. I’m now ready to go back home energized. Can’t wait for another trip with Upitrek in the future! Heather, England

2019 We had an excellent trip with Upitrek. Everything was well catered for – like e.g. extra boots in many sizes. Upitrek made us feel comfortable and safe in the beautiful but demanding Finnish north. Hilde, Netherlands

Wonderful, funny, knowledgeable guides, great skiing. Beautiful landscape, delicious food, awesome saunas and Northern Lights! A fantastic trip. Thanks! Corita, USA

Every muscle in my body hurts, but what a week! Almost a 100 km cross-country through amazing landscape. Lovely weather, lovely meals and always a warm sauna to soothe my soaring muscles! Elise, Netherlands

Ein fazinierendes Naturerlebnis, Entspannung nur trotz körperlicher Anstrengung.

2017 A fantastic way to feel the wilderness and the life of the Finns. Great guiding, but it felt like my own adventure. Paul, England

A mini adventure! Well organized tour through a remote corner of Finland. Good accommodation, plenty of food (even for vegetarians) and lots of opportunities to learn about the history, culture and wildlife of this country. Skiing route was all on tracks, either through pine forests or crossing frozen lakes. Distances very manageable for an intermediate skier (not really suitable for beginners). Saunas in the evening help to relieve any aches and pains. Overall, a very enjoyable trip. Karen, UK

2016 I had the most wonderful experience in Finland. The skiing was nice (and demanding) but the accommodation made it even more worthwhile. And especially caring staff, guide and scooter rider. What a wonderful experience once again. Veronique, Holland

The best of this tour is to stay at families like the family of Seppänen. This gave us a better understanding of life in Finland. Thank you! Female, Holland

Angela, Deutschland

2015 After years of cross-country skiing in crowded Austria it was a real experience for us to ski in this beautiful part of Finland. We liked it so much that we decided to come back soon. Perfect conditions, friendly people, nice landscapes and very good food made this holiday perfect. Thank you so much for that! Marion & Andreas, Germany

Landscapes were wonderful, ski sessions excellent, food delicious but what we will most remember are exceptional skills and kindness of our guide! Philippe, France

I would highly recommend this trip to all my cross-country skiing friends – great landscape, great guides and service, wonderful hospitality and just the right length days that most can handle while enough to satisfy the more accomplished skiers. Connie, USA

The tour we took was flawless. Airport transfers went off without a hitch – the weather in late March was perfect; we had a mixture of clouds, snow + sun. The snow conditions were excellent and the guides & service exceeded our expectations. Go if you can! Lori, USA

-> 2014 Everything is well organized to make the stay nice and warm, even if the temperatures are below zero in March (- 15 C) we never suffered of the cold during skiing. The evenings were very pleasant. The food excellent. And the saunas always very warm. Male, France

Un viaje precioso, azul y blanco. La sensación de paz y tranquilidad es espectacular aquí. Una cosa especial para mi y que no esperaba: el especial sentido del humor de los fineses. Risas y chistes también. Pilar, Catalonia

The scenery was in its best winter looks; the sunny weather, the friendly accommodations, good food and fine travel companions made this an enjoyable skiing week. But the ideal guiding and the chance to stay overnight unexpectedly at the Teerilampi wilderness log cabin made it a very special event. Thanks for taking care of such a wonderful ski tour! Keep Finland natural and keep Finland original. Edvard, Amsterdam

Daily distances were just right, one felt that had done some skiing, but not to the point of exhaustion! The scenery was awesome and the fact that we met so few people was a bonus too. Cooking in Domnan Pirtti and Arola was excellent. Petri’s knowledge was admirable, particularly about birds, animals, fish etc. Petri and Tommi both had a marvelous attitude, always calm and patient with my terrible skiing. Karen, Wales

Even better than last year – wonderful skiing, beautiful scenery, excellent food & accommodation and professional, friendly guides. Well done Upitrek! David, UK

Margie, Deutschland

Five days in wilderness, lunches around a fire place every day. Away from snowmobile and tourist places. Nice welcoming on evenings where we discovered the history of this land, and the love of its inhabitants for their country. Food is always good and more than enough. Florence, France

I have been on many tours around the world and would have to say that this was one of the best, made possible by an excellent partnership of the tour leaders (Pertti & Sabrina). – They worked well together and made a great tour for us all. Ian, Scotland

It is a fantastic experience with a guided tour in beautiful surroundings. The landscape surprises me every day. The lunch with the fire to keep us warm is a part of a naturally way of exploring the forest and the frozen lakes. After the tour in the afternoon waited the tea, coffee and some cakes for us and last but not least: the sauna. Wilma, The Netherlands

Cross-country Skiing in Finland

Cross-country skiing is a popular and easy way to explore the Finnish nature in the winter. Within a few minutes’ skiing distance away from the hustle and bustle of towns and ski resorts, you may find yourself surrounded by breath-taking views and the vast silence of the Finnish nature. There are thousands of kilometres of maintained skiing tracks within or near Finland’s National Parks, especially in Lapland - the land of round-top fells, lively ski resorts and the cleanest air in the world. The length of a typical ski season varies by seasonal weather conditions and latitude – your chances to find a winter wonderland increase the further north you go .

How to get started

Many National Parks offer good cross-country skiing opportunities – if there is snow. Check the National Park website or the Visitor Center for information on skiing trails and their current conditions. Excursionmap.fi is a good source of information on trails in National Parks, too.  Ski equipment rentals and guided skiing trips are offered by several outdoor service providers throughout Finland. If you are a beginner and want to learn the basics, consider taking a cross-country skiing lesson in a ski school.

Each National Park has a variety of authorized partners which offer activities and outdoor services in the area. We recommend using authorized Parks & Wildlife Finland partners, who are committed to the principles of sustainable nature tourism.

Important tips

Cross-country skiing suits everyone. Those trying it for the first time or wanting to take it easy can slowly ski through snowy landscapes on a classic ski trail (two parallel tracks next to each other). Low-altitude trails which are mainly flat and not too long are excellent for beginners. The skating technique (sometimes called the V-style) is a little more complex but guarantees you speed and true winter fun!

In National Parks, cross-country skiing tracks are set only on a few trails. When planning a cross-country skiing trip, get a ski trail map at the Visitor Centre or a local authorized partner. Pay attention to the three difficulty levels of skiing tracks: easy, moderate, and difficult. Some trails are lit in the evenings.

If feeling insecure, consider taking a guided ski trip or a lesson in a ski school with one of the authorized partners in the area.

Dress properly and be familiar with layering for severe winter temperatures to prevent chilling and overheating. If you didn’t bring proper clothing, no problem. Just head to an outdoor store and they will help you out.

No permit is required for daytrips or overnight trips.

  • Winter weather in Finland can be extremely cold, windy and unpredictable. Bear in mind that daylight hours are limited in the winter. Wear proper clothing layers. Watch yourself and other members of your party for signs of hypothermia. Sun protection, especially eye protection, is important in the spring.
  • Always ski with someone else. Leave word about where you are going, by what route, and when you plan to return.
  • Carry extra clothing, food, snacks, water, up-to-date trail map and compass, matches and headlamp. Make sure to bring enough drinking water, even in low temperatures. Carry water in insulated bottles so it doesn’t freeze, or consider bringing warm drinks, such as tea or hot berry juice. Inquire locally if there are any wilderness cafes that sell hot drinks, pancakes and snacks to skiers along trails.
  • Carry a fully charged mobile phone and keep it warm. However, do not rely on it. Smart phones don’t always work in low temperatures. Keep in mind that cell phone coverage can be limited in some areas.
  • Emergency number in Finland is 112.
  • Know the limits of your ability. If you find the trail too difficult, turn back. Please do not take your skis off to walk up or down hills as the holes you will leave are very dangerous for other skiers. If you decide to continue, turn sideways, dig ski edges into the slope and sidestep either up or down the hill.
  • Plan your time. Include allowances for limited daylight, snow conditions, temperature extremes, and the number of people in the group, their experience and physical condition.
  • Do not approach reindeer or other wildlife.

Trail Etiquette

  • Be considerate. Ski on the right and pass on the left. Faster skiers yield to the slower.
  • Please note, that skiing trails - both classic cross-country tracks and skating lane - are for skiing only. Please do not walk or snowshoe on skiing trails.
  • Skiers going uphill yield to those going downhill. Keep your distance, especially in downhill sections.
  • If you need to take a break, please move off the track. When possible, take advantage of the maintained campfire sites and wilderness cafes along the trail.

One of Finland's best spots for cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing is the most popularly engaged form of exercise among Finns during wintertime. Definitely something you should try when in Finland. Levi offers a wide and well-maintained network of ski tracks, making it one of Finland's best spots for cross-country skiing.

Great network of tracks for all skill levels

In the network of tracks totalling 230 kilometres in length, there are suitable tracks for different skill levels: for beginners, active fitness enthusiasts and competitive professionals honing their skills. There are 28 kilometres of tracks in the Rakkavaara area which are also illuminated for late-night skiing. In the Rakkavaara area, Isoporo, Pikkuporo, Miniporo, Ensilumenlatu, and Valorakka are all illuminated ski trails, forming what is known as the Rakkavaara area. All tracks in the Levi area are suitable for both classic and free cross-country skiing techniques. The little trail cafés that can be found along the way are mainly open during the spring season. At Levi, people will still be skiing at the beginning of May! The cross-country ski tracks are maintained during the mornings.

Please note that walking and cycling on the tracks are prohibited. You can find separate winter walking and cycling routes in Levi.

The main trails in Levi are lit up daily between 6 am - 11 pm.

From the electronic route service  www.infogis.fi/levi you can check up-to-date information about maintained ski tracks.

Please note that the map of Levi's cross-country ski tracks linked above is a web view version and cannot be printed. You can buy a printed cross-country ski trail map of the Levi area (price 10 euros), for example, from Levi Tourist Information and Zero Point Brand Store.

Safety on cross-country ski tracks

You can also ski with a leashed dog on certain sections of the cross-country ski tracks. The dog tracks are marked with a dog symbol and a red dashed line on Levi's cross-country ski track map that opens via the links above.

During the wintertime, as long as the tracks are maintained, it is forbidden to walk dogs on the ski tracks. When there is no snow, walking dogs on a leash is allowed on trail bases.

Dog tracks in Levi

In the direction of Kätkä: Departure from the starting point of the slopes (A on the Levi's cross-country ski track map). The dog trail in the direction of Kätkä runs via Immeljärvi and Kätkäjärvi to Nuottijärvi (about 8 km one way). In the direction of Köngäs: Departure from the Järvirovantie parking area in Levijärvi, intersection number 93 on the map. The trails all the way to Rauduskylä are dog trails (about 28 km one way).

Levi's dog tracks are marked with dog symbols on Levi's cross-country ski track map .

Get started with cross-country skiing

The easiest way to learn cross-country skiing is to take a lesson at the  Levi Ski School . The Levi  equipment rentals  have an excellent selection of cross-country skiing equipment for both classic and free cross-country skiing technique. Rentals also wax and maintain the skis according to the weather.

The haven for cross-country skiing pampers skiers

Ylläs offers an unparalleled extensive network of cross-country skiing trails – some 300 kilometers of first-class and well-maintained tracks await the skier. The versatile skiing trail system attracts both beginners and professionals from near and far, and not without reason, as Ylläs’ trails are in a class of their own.

In the heart of winter, the most thrilling experience is skiing over the vast swamp while the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park’s fells loom in the background against the pink-hued polar night sky. The donuts and coffee from the wilderness café taste exceptionally good, providing the energy to ski back home and jump straight into the sauna to warm up after a long day of outdoor activities. On Ylläs’ trails, you won’t get bored, but rather will be pleasantly surprised!

cross country ski tour finland

Avoid getting bored

Ylläs has been known as a cross-country skiing mecca for decades. Its reputation still holds true, and for a good reason – the trails are among the best and most beautiful in Finland. There’s an abundance of skiing opportunities in Ylläs, and with plenty of space and tranquility, there’s no room for trail rage. Wilderness cafés and maintained shelters provide well-timed breaks in your skiing adventure. The trails are easy to access for everyone, and you can choose between freestyle, classic, or your very own style.

Free or Classic style?

For beginners, it’s advisable to start learning classic skiing, which is suitable even for those with lower fitness levels, as you can easily maintain a very gentle pace. On the other hand, freestyle skiing requires more stamina and a bit of balance, but it’s perfect for those who enjoy the thrill of speed. Towards late spring, freestyle skiing becomes particularly fast on the hardened snow due to temperature changes.

Cross-country skiing in the polar night and spring sunshine

Of the about 300 kilometers of skiing tracks, more than 30 kilometers are illuminated. During the polar night, on other trails you can ski with a headlamp on, enjoying the peaceful trees and the weight of snow they carry. Skiing under the light of a full moon is especially atmospheric as the moon illuminates the landscape perfectly, and you might not even need a headlamp.

In the spring (Feb, March), there are more skiers on the trails, and dedicated enthusiasts complete long loops, such as the classic route around Yllästunturi (approximately 30km) or towards Aakenustunturi, where you can almost always find solitude. April is great for skiing: comfort is at next level as it is warmer, sunnier and skiis slides very easily! It is also quiet month on the trails.

Skiing with a child or a dog

You can easily take small children on a skiing trip in a sled, which can be rented from rental shops in the area. Place a reindeer hide on the bottom of the sled, put the child in a sleeping bag, pack some snacks, and you’re good to go. Children can practice skiing at their own pace, for example, in the wilderness Cafe Aurinkotupa skiing area. Technical instruction is available for both classic and freestyle skiing enthusiasts.

There are 46 kilometers of dog-friendly skiing trails near both of the fell villages. At junctions, these trails are marked with symbols for skiers and dogs. You can find the dog-friendly trails on Ylläs’ skiing trail map .

Ski Schools & Guided tours

When do the ylläs ski trails open.

cross country ski tour finland

When the first snow falls around October , the so-called “Lämpökolmonen,” an illuminated trail of three kilometers located on the Äkäslompolo side along road Maisematie, is groomed first. As soon as there is enough snow, the other most popular and near by trails are opened totaling 150km.

The second and third-grade ski trails open up in February – all ski trails are open by the time of the winter holidays (mid February).

The ski trails are maintained until May 1st , weather and snow conditions permitting. By purchasing the Ylläs outdoor map , you support the maintenance of the trails.

Feedback on trails can be send with email to [email protected]

  • Respect nature – leave no trace in it. Keep your pets on a leash.
  • Mainly use marked trails and follow the rules for different modes of travel. Check the areas and times in which access is possibly restricted at your destination.
  • Camp only where it is allowed. Do not wash the dishes or yourself directly in a water body. Follow the rules of wilderness huts.
  • Light your campfire only where it is allowed and use a camping stove where possible. Do not light a fire when a forest or grass fire warning is in effect.
  • Do not litter. Bring the trash back to your accommodation.

Kiilopää Winter Trails: Luulampi Cross-Country Skiing Tour

On the cross-country skiing routes of Kiilopää and Saariselkä you can find Finland's biggest ascents and descents in open fell scenery. Fell skiing on a sunny, frosty day is a great experience in pure nature.

From Suomen Latu Kiilopää's fell center starts one of the most beautiful cross-country skiing track routes, the ‘Luulammen lenkki’. Luulampi cross-country skiing track is a loop route, that runs mostly through Urho Kekkonen National Park. The approximately 19-kilometer journey includes challenging ascents, long and fast downhills, wonderfull winter fell scenery and several nice rest places.

On the cross-country skiing routes of Kiilopää and Saariselkä you can find Finland's biggest ascents and descents in open fell scenery. It's easy to go to the skiing tracks starting from Kiilopää for both shorter and longer day trips. Fell skiing on a sunny, frosty day is a great experience in pure nature.

How to get to Kiilopää

  • By airplane: Kiilopää is located around 46 kilometers from Ivalo airport. Finnair flies to Ivalo during the winter season. The airport bus schedule to Kiilopää follows the flights schedule.
  • By train and bus: By VR train, you should choose Rovaniemi as your final stop. There are daily bus services to Kiilopää from Rovaniemi.
  • By bus: There are several buses from Rovaniemi and Ivalo to Kiilopää during the winter season.

Kiilopää cross-country skiing tracks

Kiilopää's ski tracks are part of a larger travel center, which also includes Saariselkä, Kakslauttanen and Laanila. There is a total of two hundred kilometers of maintained skiing track network, of which there are about 35 kilometers of lighted tracks. There are approximately 150 kilometers of skiing trails in the Kiilopää and Saariselkä region, including wilderness trails.

The core area of the skiing track network has wide tracks that are suitable for traditional and skate skiing. In the fell area, you can freely ski also on less frequently opened narrower natural trails and on your own routes. The maintenance of the narrow wilderness trails begins in February.

In the fell area, the weather can change from a clear blue sky to a complete whiteout and blizzard in one day (and even a skiing tour). On a slightly longer trip, especially in the fells, you should know the basics of winter hiking .

The Luulampi skiing track is marked with orange sticks on the terrain.

cross country ski tour finland

Luulampi skiing track starting from Kiilopää

The first ascent to the fells towards the northern slopes of Kiilopää fell is the hardest part of the whole tour, especially if you are pulling a pulk sled behind you. The ascent continues for almost two kilometers. However, the slope is mostly gentle, and you can ski it the whole way.

The scenery in the fells is quickly rewarding. A little higher up there’s also another trail made by a snowmobile.

The highest point is 472 meters. From Kiilopää, incredibly beautiful winter landscapes open up to the Urho Kekkonen National Park and the Hammastunturi wilderness area. If you don’t have time to ski around the entire Luulampi route, you should at least ski up to Kiilopää fell for the scenery.

Up in the fell there is a gentle slope for a short distance. The trail signpost has gathered a thick blanket of ice on it during the cold winter days. From here you could ski to the top of Kiilopää fell to admire the scenery also on the south side of the fell.

The descent from the heights of Kiilopää down to the foot of the fell looks wild, and it is a quite fast downhill. Even if you plow with your skis, the speed accelerates to 28 kilometers per hour. There is a stunning two kilometers of direct descent in the middle of the beautiful whiteness.

The gently descending skiing track curves to the left towards Luulampi. After a while, there are signs and a map of the winter routes next to the track. From the signpost, you could also ski to Rautulampi along a nature trail in the Rautuvanka valley. A visit to Rautulampi will add about 12 km extra.

When I left for the ski trip, the Rautulampi track was not yet maintained after the previous days’ blizzards, so I had decided not to do the extra tour. On the day of the skiing trip, the weather was great, and the trail was immediately maintained during the morning.

cross country ski tour finland

Luulampi day hut

From the intersection of the Rautulampi trail, it is a fifteen-minute skiing to the Luulampi day hut. Along the way you will come across a reindeer fence with gates. The living day hut has a stove and a fireplace. There is also a campfire site, firewood and dry toilets in the courtyard area.

During the seasons in spring and autumn, a wilderness cafe operates at the hut. Then the day hut is not open for the hikers. The opening hours and entrepreneurs of the wilderness cafe have changed in recent years, at the time of my ski trip (spring 2021) the cafe was closed in the early afternoon. Fortunately, I had my own snacks.

Rumakuru old and new day huts

From Luulampi, the route continues on relatively flat track towards Rumakuru. First, you reach the old day hut in Rumakuru, where you can ski from Luulampi in about 45 minutes. The old day hut is tiny and cute, there is a campfire place and a woodshed in the yard.

Rumakuru's new day hut is less than a kilometer away. The new, larger day hut is popular during the winter season, and fires can often be found ready. You should still take your own matches with you on a ski trip. The view from the hut opens directly to the rugged Rumakuru gorge, which looks beautiful in its winter outfit.

The journey continues from the new day hut in Rumakuru towards Ahopäät fell. After about one and a half kilometers of skiing, you reach the intersection of four skiing tracks, from where you can get to Laanila and Saariselkä. Continue to Kiilopää on the trail on the left.

cross country ski tour finland

From Ahopäät to Kiilopää

The skiing track alternately ascends and descends through a couple of steep but short hills to the lower slopes of Pieranvaara fell, where the final ascent towards Ahopäät begins. You ski to the top of Ahopäät almost as high as the initial part of the journey to Kiilopää fell, about 400 meters. In good weather, you can admire Saariselkä's Kaunispää and Nattaset fells towering far to the south.

There is also a long and fast descent down the fell from Ahopäät. If the track is in good condition, you can ski down the slope safely even with zero visibility.

The last picture from the top of Ahopää fell illustrates what it looks like in a whiteout in the open fell scenery - white on white. The tree in the picture is the only tree up there, otherwise it really is just white.

From the top of Ahopäät, it is only one and a half kilometers to the starting point in Kiilopää. The last few hundred meters you will ski in a forest.

Even if you've had snacks from your backpack on the ski trip, it's nice to go to Kiilopää's cafe at the fell center after the trip to warm up and enjoy a hot cup of coffee.

According to my sports watch the length of the trip was 19.2 km and the duration was 4 h 50 min. Quite a good workout as I had full-length skins on the bottoms of the fell skis the whole time and a pulk sled!

Why choose Nature Travels for your ski touring or cross country skiing holiday?

As we focus on non-motorised activities, we firmly believe that ski touring and cross country skiing offer a more sustainable, lower-impact alternative to downhill skiing.

We personally feel that the closer connection to the natural environment, the opportunity to access remote wilderness areas and the sense of achievement which comes from moving solely under your own power make a ski tour one of the very best winter experiences there is.

More than any of our other activities, we know how important it is to choose the right ski tour for you to match your ability, level of fitness and expectations. Since we first offered ski touring in 2006, the popularity of this activity has grown significantly, and our own knowledge and experience has grown with it. As with all our experiences, we have a personal knowledge of everything we offer, and are always happy to discuss the differences between the various options to help you choose!

Backcountry skiing in Finland

If you've only been downhill skiing before, or done cross country day tours, skiing with a pack or pulk, or winter camping, may take a little practice! Photos: Nature Travels.

Do I need previous skiing experience?

Yes and no! For some of our tours, previous experience of cross country skiing or ski touring is essential. For our introductory-level tours, if you are generally comfortable at a basic level on skis from previous experience with downhill skiing or cross country skiing on tracks, this will be fine.

The level of challenge of the tours we offer varies greatly, and can also be significantly affected by weather and temperature conditions during your tour. In some cases, for example Backcountry Skiing and Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland, the skiing itself will not be particularly technical, but you will need a high level of physical fitness and previous general experience of the outdoors.

See "Good to Know" under each tour page for detailed information on the requirements for each of the tours.

When can I go ski touring or cross country skiing?

For ski touring in the mountains and most remote regions, March and April, the "spring winter", is the most popular and most suitable period, though we also offer options (such as Backcountry Skiing and Northern LIghts in Fininish Lapland) which take place throughout the winter season. For our cross country skiing tours, January-March is the most suitable time.

What equipment do I need?

This will vary depending on the tour, but in all cases, ski equipment is either included as standard or available to hire as an optional extra. If you have your own ski equipment, you are also welcome to use this on the tour, provided you have first confirmed with us that your equipment will be appropriate.

Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland

Ski touring in the far north offers very good chances for Northern Lights. Photo: Tristan Hale.

Can I see the Northern Lights on a ski tour?

Absolutely! If your chosen tour is located sufficiently far north to be in the "Northern Lights zone", you have very good chances to see the Northern Lights (unless of course it's cloudy, there's no activity, or you're asleep!). The Aurora is visible until around early-mid April, after which the nights become too light. As compensation, mid-late April can be one of the most wonderful periods for mountain ski touring, with a real feeling of spring in the air.

Cross Nordics Ski Tour 2024

10.3.2024 00:00

Salla - Muonio - Kiruna - Narvik

Exotic skitour cross Finland, Sweden and Norway 10.-24.3.2024

We start our tour from the Russian border crossing station in tiny town of Salla, just north of polar circle in Eastern Finland. In eight days we ski cross Finland’s magic Lapland and reach Swedish border in town of Muonio. Next six days we enjoy the scenery of Swedish Lappland and cross border to Norway in Riksgransen. Last day we ski down to North-Atlantic coast, near city of Narvik. In finish we call this tour: Pohjolan poikki hiihto (PPH). In total 14 days we ski ca. 800km. Daily etappes are ca 50-70km and we ski mainly along snowmobile tracks, to where a skitrack is driven same day by local snowmobilist. Some days we pass skiresorts and can utilize their permanent skitracks (in perfect condition). Free technic skiing is possible in some parts of the route.

10 Exciting Things to Do in Lapland Finland

A dream for many is a visit to a snowy winter destination. Our suggestion is to head to Finland. There are so many amazing things to do in Lapland Finland in winter that it will make all your wildest dreams a reality! Whether you hope to spot the Northern Lights, see reindeer, or go on an exhilarating sled right with huskies, we have you covered. Below we share our top 10 things that you need to put on your Finland Lapland winter bucket list!

Where is Lapland in Finland?

Lapland is actually a region in the greater Scandinavia that occupies parts of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. The word “Lapp” was used to refer to the indigenous Sami people who have long lived in this region, thus creating the name Lapland. In general Lapland lies within the Arctic Circle, offering an amazing array of unspoiled nature.

In Finland, Lapland encompasses a large swath of the northern part of the country, beginning just a bit south of the town of Kemi on the sea, reaching up to Finland’s most northernmost borders. For many visitors the town of Rovaniemi is synonymous with Lapland, but as you can see, that town is only a very small part of the region with a huge expanse waiting to be discovered.

Getting to/from Lapland

Lapland is quite easily connected with Helsinki, the capital of Finland as well as other destinations around the world. There are now even direct flights to Rovaniemi from the UK and other places in Europe. If you are coming from Sweden or Norway, you can also connect to Finnish Lapland quite easily.

Read More on our Guide to Getting to Lapland from Helsinki

There are 5 airports in Lapland including Rovaniemi and Kemi.

The easiest is to fly, however, it is quite an experience to take an overnight train from Helsinki to Kemi, Rovaniemi or even to the northernmost railway station of Kolari. The train is clean, comfortable and allows you to not waste time moving from one destination to another!

How cold will it be in Lapland in winter?

People always want to know, how cold will it be in Lapland in winter and the easiest answer is COLD! Obviously it depends on what time of the year you visit, how far north you go and the current weather patterns, but in general you can assume it will be quite cold. During my recent trip I experienced temperatures down to minus 36 celsius and as warm as -11 celsius (and trust me once you have experienced -36, anything else feels downright warm at times!) with average temperatures around -20 celcius.

During our visit to Kemi, in the far south of Lapland, we experienced minus 24 degrees on the regular, and then as we reached further north to Muonio , we dipped down to -36. However the week after I left temperatures were much warmer and even close to 0 at times. The best is to be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

What should I pack for a winter visit to Finland?

Merino wool and lots of layers is the quickest way to answer this common question. I packed only a small carry on as I knew that it didn’t really matter what I wore each day as it would be covered up by my jacket or a snow suit. The most important thing was having many breathable warm layers and warm clothes. My wardrobe consists almost entirely of wool , so it was not that difficult for me to put together breathable layers. I don’t use fleece, but many people also highly recommend a fleece layer to keep you warm and toasty.

As an example of what I wore almost daily:

  • For my legs: Thin light thermal merino wool leggings , thick Woolx leggings, topped with ski pants
  • For my upper: Think or thick thermal top depending on the temperature, my Wool& hoodie and an Irish thick wool sweater with my long down parka on top.
  • Extras: Gloves, mittens, balaclava plus a hat, neck buff/snood
  • Socks: 2 to 3 pairs of wool socks every day. Ideally with enough to switch out in the day if they get wet with moisture or sweat.
  • Leg Warmers : I wore these inside the hotels when I didn’t have my ski pants on, but needed a bit more warmth

If you haven’t spent much time in the arctic conditions (which I had not!), you will quickly learn that some things are more important than others. One is having room in your jacket, ski suit, shoes and gloves for air to warm up and keep you warm. This means buying your shoes too big so that you can wear multiple pairs of socks but also to keep space for your feet to warm up. This also means having space in your jacket to fit all of your layers and space for air to heat up as well. Lastly, having multiple pairs of thick wooly socks that you can change into when your feet get sweaty. Having any moisture in your socks in these temperatures can quickly make your feet cold.

Another point to note that for many outdoor adventure guided activities, snow jumpsuits, boots, hats and gloves will often be provided as part of the tour, which means you just need to focus on your several base layers under this suit!

Top Bucket List Things to Do in Lapland Finland

While this isn’t an exhaustive list of all the things to do in Lapland Finland, this is our top recommendations that most visitors will enjoy regardless of their age or their physical abilities. This includes something for everyone. While many of these activities can be found all over Lapland, I have included the best places where I have personally experienced these and my top recommendations.

Play in an Ice Castle

If you aren’t in Kemi, you can also stay in a snow hotel, glass igloo or get married in a snow chapel in Rovaniemi. In Muonio you can dine in an ice restaurant or drink in a an ice bar at one of Harriniva’s resorts .

Another place to put on your bucket list if you are in Muonio is the Lapland Hotel Snow Village near Ylläs and Levi. With 20 million kilos of snow and almost half a million kilos of ice, you won’t be disappointed in their yearly designs!

Float in Ice on the Sampo Icebreaker Tour

During our visit, we were given a guided tour of the ship, with a visit to the former 1960s control room, the captain’s bridge and the very noisy engine room among other locations on the ship.

After the guided tour, you can slip into a bright orange survival suit  to swim in the frozen sea waters and walk on the frozen sea. This was one of the most unique experiences I have ever had. Even though getting on that survival suit was a bit scary, it was well worth it in the end.

Feed Reindeer & Learn About the Tradition of Reindeer Herding

Utilizing reindeer as transportation was an ancient way of getting around by the Sami people. Now, this is one activity that is pretty much available in every town throughout Lapland. During our trip to Lapland, we were able to visit 3 different reindeer farms and meet with a variety of reindeer herders.

One aspect of any reindeer experience I would highly recommend including is being able to learn about the native Sami culture and their traditions as reindeer herders. Not all locations are run by Sami, but do look out for them if you can to support the indigenous communities as much as possible.

In Muonio, we also had an opportunity to feed reindeer before visiting a local museum about reindeer herders with the traditional clothing worn, equipment used etc.

Many visitors enjoy going on a reindeer sleigh ride, I will say that even if you just feed and pet these cuties, it is also pretty special.

Go on an Exhilarating Husky Safari

Husky safaris can be as short as 15km rides around the forest and as long as many days to really get out into the backcountry and experience life in the arctic wilderness.

As a general rule, Finland has very strict regulations on animal tourism and regularly inspects kennels to make sure that the dogs are being well looked after as well as not overworked.

For some husky safari rides you will be the musher, and in others you will just be the passenger. I was offered the ability to do both, but enjoyed being the passenger more than the driver! I will tell you, these dogs love to RUN and they go fast. It really is exhilarating! We enjoyed our adventures in the Muonio region at both Harriniva Resorts and through Polar Lights Tours. Both had excellent programs with well trained and looked after dogs.

For summer visitors, you can still visit the kennels and often take the huskies for a walk or participate in their summer exercise programs.

Spot the Northern Lights

Many visitors book a tour to see the auroras, but you can also hunt them on your own if you are staying somewhere without much light pollution. We saw them nightly on our visit to Muonio , but had no luck in the south at Kemi as there was too much light near the town. A popular way to spot the Northern Lights is on a snowmobile safari!

Top tip: Wear lots of layers, bring a tripod (and never touch your tripod without gloves on. I learned this the hard way!), invest in these mittens that you can take your fingers out of and be patient!

Try a Sauna and Ice Dip

While there are public saunas throughout the country, there are also many stunning sauna experiences that are well worth checking out. I particularly loved my experience at Arctic Sauna World where there were several different type of sauna rooms including the famous Finnish smoke saunas, as well as an icy hole in the frozen lake to take an ice plunge!

The quest is to challenge yourself to the full Finnish experience by dipping into the frozen waters followed by your steaming sauna session. Prior to trying this for myself I couldn’t understand how people got hooked on these ice baths, but once you feel the endorphins and adrenaline rush, you will be hooked as well. This really is one of best things you can do in Lapland Finland during your visit.

Try Your Hand at Ice Fishing

Eat dinner in a traditional kota.

If you have the opportunity to have a meal in a traditional kota it is an experience to be savored. During our visit, we had lunch in a kota at a reindeer farm as well as part of our hotel stay in Harriniva. One of the best meals I had was Loimulohi, which is an old Finnish technique for cooking salmon on an open fire. I have seen this at German Christmas markets, but it was a true delight to experience it in a kota in Finland.

Snowshoe or Go Cross-Country Skiing

Snowshoeing, cross country skiing or even fat e-biking are accessible and give a new perspective on the wintry forests and fells (basically hills/ rounded mountains).

Hot tip! If you have the opportunity, try the sliding snowshoe (liukulumikenkä), the Finnish invention which makes moving around in the deep snow easier. We tried this on our ice fishing adventure with Nordic Safaris and it was so fun!

Visit Santa’s village

Santa Village has tons of shops, restaurants and cafés, the famous Santa Claus Post Office, which is almost as popular as seeing the big man himself and so much more. Mrs. Claus even has her own cabin where you can decorate gingerbread cookies alongside the elves.

Obviously the busiest season here is in November and December, but it is well worth visiting all throughout the winter for a festive visit with Santa.

There are so many amazing experiences to be had on a Finnish Lapland winter escape, that you just might need to plan several! Visiting during the winter months offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in a real life winter wonderland that you thought only existed in fairy tales! Stay in ice hotels? Sure! See Santa’s village? Of course! Walk through a forest with snowy trees surrounding you and pastel arctic skies above? Yep, it is all here waiting for you in Finnish Lapland.
