MUSIC Of The SPHERES World Tour announced

Music Of The Spheres World Tour announced

Ahead of tomorrow’s release of Music Of The Spheres, the band have just announced an accompanying global stadium tour in 2022.

The Music Of The Spheres World Tour begins on 18 March 2022 with the band’s first ever show in Costa Rica, before travelling to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, USA, Germany, Poland, France, Belgium and the UK. The full list of shows and on sale dates is available at coldplay.com/tour now. The band have already teased that more dates will follow soon.

UK fans ordering Music Of The Spheres from the Official Coldplay UK Store at ukstore.coldplay.com (including all those who have already done so) will get first access to tickets for the UK shows*.

SUSTAINABILITY PLAN ‘A WORK IN PROGRESS’

In 2019, the band committed to making their future tours as environmentally beneficial as possible, and today’s announcement is accompanied by a comprehensive set of sustainability initiatives and environmental commitments, including one tree planted for every ticket sold and a show powered by 100% renewable energy. Full details can be seen at coldplay.com/sustainability now.

The band said:

“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.

At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far.

If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Sustainability plan [ ]

Alongside the announcement, the band released a detailed plan outlining how they could have the least possible impact on the environment, resulting in 50% less carbon dioxide generated than during the A Head Full of Dreams Tour . Coldplay and a number of leading environmental experts worked on the plan for over two years, and it includes a number of innovative sustainability strategies. For example, the band has collaborated with BMW to develop the first "mobile, rechargeable show battery" to power each concert on the tour, and the stage will be constructed from "a combination of lightweight, low-carbon, and re-usable materials (including bamboo and recycled steel) that can be properly reused or recycled at the end of the tour." In addition, they have pledged to plant one tree for every ticket sold. [2]

The tour, like the Mylo Xyloto Tour and the A Head Full of Dreams Tour, will include extensive pyrotechnic and confetti visuals, as well as a third generation of Xylobands for audience members to wear. However, according to Coldplay's sustainability plan, these features will be adapted in such a way that their inclusion in each show on the tour will be more considerate towards the environment: the band have stated that they are investing in "a new generation of sustainable pyrotechnics that have less explosive charge and new formulas that greatly reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals", that "confetti used during the show will be 100% biodegradable and will require significantly less compressed gas for ignition than on previous tours", and that the LED wristbands will be made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials". Coldplay Pledges to Lower Carbon Emissions on 2022 Tour

On Thursday (Oct. 14), Coldplay announced the dates for its 2022 global tour in support of the upcoming album 'Music of the Spheres.'

By Gil Kaufman

Gil Kaufman

Coldplay announced the dates for an expansive 2022 world tour in support of the group’s upcoming Max Martin-produced album, Music of the Spheres  on Thursday morning (Oct. 14). The stadium outing is slated to kick off on March 18 with the band’s first-ever show in Costa Rica, at the Estadio Nacional, before moving on to the Dominican Republic and Mexico and then touching down in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on April 23 for a U.S. run slated to last through a June 14 gig at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

H.E.R. is on board to support the majority of the dates, with London Grammar booked to open a July 10 show in Berlin and an Aug. 16 gig at Wembley Stadium in London. Tickets for the U.S. dates will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. local time here , with a release teasing that more dates will be announced soon.

Ed Sheeran Joins Coldplay to Perform 'Fix You' & 'Shape of You' at London Album Party

In an effort to make the tour as sustainable as possible, the band announced that all the shows will be powered by 100% renewable energy, with pledges to cut tour emissions by 50% from the group’s 2016-17 world tour and plant one tree for every ticket sold. According to a release, each venue will be equipped with solar installations and other renewable power sources including waste cooking oil and a kinetic stadium floor with kinetic bikes powered by fans that will store energy in the first-ever mobile, rechargeable show battery.

Coldplay are also encouraging fans to use low-carbon transport to and from shows through the official tour app, rewarding those who do with a discount at the venues, in addition to making sure that all merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. There will also be free drinking water and efforts made to eliminate plastic bottles at every venue; click here to see the full list of sustainability goals.

In a statement, the band said, “Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Coldplay’s concerts a space-themed spectacle: 9 songs to watch out for

coldplay world tour songs

Nobody said it was easy. But after months of anticipation, Coldplay will finally make it to Singapore’s shores as part of their Music Of The Spheres world tour.

Not only that, the British rock band will set a record here as the first act to play six nights at the National Stadium, the Lion City’s largest concert venue.

Their current tour kicked off in Costa Rica in 2022, and has travelled to Latin America, Europe, North America, Australia and Asia.

Their sold-out Singapore performances – the tour’s 125th to 130th – will be performed on Jan 23, 24, 26, 27, 30 and 31. Some 300,000 fans, who paid $68 to $298 a ticket, are slated to attend.

Other Asian stops include two nights each in Kaohsiung, Tokyo, Bangkok and Bulacan in the Philippines, as well as one night each in Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.

Coldplay last performed two concerts at the National Stadium in 2017 as part of their A Head Full Of Dreams tour (2016 to 2017).

The group’s current tour, their eighth, is in support of their ninth studio album Music Of The Spheres (2021). The tour has made headlines for its ground-breaking sustainability initiatives, which include the world’s first tourable battery system and a show powered by 100 per cent renewable energy in almost all locations.

The quartet recently revealed that, on a show-by-show comparison, the current tour has so far produced 47 per cent less carbon dioxide emissions than their previous stadium tour, and that more than seven million trees have been planted around the world – one for each concertgoer.

In addition, the LED wristbands issued to concertgoers are plant-based and reusable, and collected back at the end of each show. They have an average return rate of 86 per cent.

The two-hour show will be divided into four acts, each themed around the idea of planets, moons, stars and home.

According to news reports and videos from Coldplay’s performances in other cities, fans can expect a kaleidoscopic, space-themed spectacle with many circular screens, filled with splashes of colour, as well as a set list comprising 21 songs.

Here are nine numbers to look out for:

1. Higher Power (2021)

coldplay world tour songs

Higher Power is expected to kick things off on a wondrous note. After emerging along the walkway linking the main stage and B-stage, frontman and lead vocalist Chris Martin is expected to kneel and kiss the stage before performing on the B-stage, while guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion head to the main stage. Amid a confetti shower, concertgoers’ wristbands will flash red and white during the uplifting, inspiring track.

2. My Universe (2021)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coldplay (@coldplay)

The seven members of K-pop boy band BTS are set to appear on the sphere-shaped Jumbotron screens whenever their parts from their music collaboration are played. During the bridge, a video of Jungkook is cast onto the circular screens, giving the impression that he is performing alongside Martin. The final chorus will be accompanied by another confetti explosion.

3. Biutyful (2021)

The concert’s final song is likely to be this enchanting ballad, which will get audiences putting their hands in the air and swaying. Martin sings along with Angel Moon, lead singer of the fictional alien puppet band The Weirdos, whose childlike, squeaky voice is a pitched-up version of Martin’s. These puppets were created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company behind The Muppets ensemble.

4. A Sky Full Of Stars (2014)

With wristbands lighting up in blue and white, the song title is what the stadium is set to become. The piano ballad is punctuated by house-influenced electronic dance music segments, and fans will be reminded of the late Swedish music producer Avicii, who collaborated with Coldplay on this Grammy-nominated track before his death by suicide in 2018 at the age of 28.

5. Adventure Of A Lifetime (2015)

coldplay world tour songs

The party should officially begin at this point of the concert. Numerous massive multicoloured balls will appear and bounce above the audience, and the animation on-screen will show iridescent figures dancing amid a sea of colours. With the anthem’s empowering lyrics and infectious melody, it is easy to get swept up in the rush of excitement.

6. Something Just Like This (2017)

@ricapessoa “Everyone is an Alien Somewhere” #coldplay #coldplaycoimbra #musicofthespheresworldtour #chrismartin #somethingjustlikethis #fyp #fy @coldplay ♬ som original - Gabriella

As cascading shapes float across the stadium ceiling, the band members will don helmets depicting alien heads. Martin, disguised as an one-eyed extraterrestrial, does not sing live. Instead, his vocals play while he conveys the lyrics in sign language. When the chorus kicks in, the audience will be hit with a blast of lasers and pulsating lights.

7. Yellow (2000)

coldplay world tour songs

Count to three, and the stadium is expected to be awash in the colour of sunflowers. The group’s breakthrough hit has been used in movies such as the Oscar-winning coming-of-age film Boyhood (2014), and a Mandarin cover by American singer Katherine Ho was featured in the blockbuster romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians (2018). During the concert, the all-time favourite shines as a heartfelt, hypnotic serenade.

8. Fix You (2005)

coldplay world tour songs

Martin once described this sentimental organ-backed track about recovering from grief as probably the most important song Coldplay have written. Inspired by his desire to help his then wife, American actress Gwyneth Paltrow, cope with the death of her father in 2002, it is a staple at Coldplay concerts and its performance is accompanied by glowing giant orbs that hang mid-air in the stadium. Expect a church-like atmosphere as the wristbands radiate a warm orange during a massive singalong. There might even be a magic trick from Martin.

9. Viva La Vida (2008)

coldplay world tour songs

When the majestic sound of violins starts and loops, the audience knows it is time for the 2009 Grammy-winning Song of the Year. The wistful orchestral pop ballad, whose title means “long live life” in Spanish, is about a king who has lost his kingdom and now sweeps the streets he used to own. All four members will appear on the B-stage, while their fans chant Viva La Vida’s well-known “oh-oh-oh” refrain.

“We’re the biggest soft rock band in the world, we can’t afford a bigger stool?”

Look no further for a quote to perfectly encapsulate Coldplay, as lead singer Chris Martin laughed and waved a short stool around the stage. Though funny and self-deprecating, the British quartet is a true monstrosity of a band.

For perspective, Coldplay’s debut album Parachutes won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2002, and, two decades later in 2022, they sold more concert tickets than any other artist, breaking attendance records around the world. Formed in 1997 during their London school days, the rock band consists of vocalist/pianist Martin, drummer Will Champion, bassist Guy Berryman, and guitarist Jonny Buckland, who have dominated musical charts and proved to be an undeniable influence on the sonic landscape of music.

coldplay world tour songs

As Martin waved the stool around — he ended up having a completely functional stool that simply needed adjustment, and joked, “I could’ve worked the stool like a proper person” — two fans from Mexico sat in front of his piano anxiously waiting for him to join them in singing “Let Somebody Go.” Martin picks fans from shows to join him onstage to sing their requested songs, and the fans of this show excitedly gifted him a pin he proudly wears.

“We recorded it with Selena Gomez … but we never got to sing it with her, so we haven’t really played it,” Martin disclaimed at the start. In true Los Angeles show privilege, Selena Gomez walked out to sing with Martin and the fans, one of whom jumped up to hug her. H.E.R., the opening act of the night, walked out to lend her vocals and electric guitar to the track.

Worth mentioning is Coldplay’s emphasis on environmental sustainability, with their world stadium tour utilizing energy bicycles, electricity-producing dancefloors, and planting a tree for every ticket sold, to name a few. The floor of the stadium had palpable energy, with fans gleefully riding the energy bicycles and dancing on the floors as the screens onstage displayed their beaming faces. It signaled a step in a more conscious direction for touring, and it was inspiring to see one of the biggest bands in the world walking the walk of the cause they so passionately believe in.

The band made sure to play their hits, including a mind blowing run of “Paradise,” “The Scientist,” “Viva la Vida,” and “Hymn for the Weekend” performed back-to-back. Coldplay performed their biggest songs with a respect and excitement unlike most other acts I’ve seen. Highlight “Fix You” started with Martin performing the intro solo on piano (on the miniature C-Stage in the back of the floor), then running to the main stage as the song soared back to life, joining the rest with the band.

The C-Stage contained my favorite moment of the night, when Coldplay played sleeper hit “Sparks,” in an intimate, acoustic circle — Champion’s drum set swapped for a cajon, and Martin on acoustic guitar — facing one another. It helped those in the back of the stadium get a closer view; I was able to stand at the front, and it was mind-blowing to see such a huge act up close, singing one of my favorite songs.

coldplay world tour songs

During the second C-Stage song, “Magic,” Martin switched to piano and introduced the band while sharing anecdotes. With an improvised song to Buckland, he sang, “It’s just me and you, like in 1996. When you were smoking in the corner, and I was up to all kinds of tricks. You didn’t even like me, you said I got it all wrong. But you said you’d stick beside me, you make millions of dollars from my songs!” Martin laughed. “Not true,” he reassured.

When introducing Berryman on bass, Martin shared how “when we first started playing, this is how we’d rehearse. In Johnny’s bedroom, sitting this close. But they’d be smoking a lot more weed and a lot more cigarettes.” The crowd erupts into laughter. “In 1997, he changed all his life plans and stayed in London so we could keep rehearsing. If he hadn’t done that, we’d all be fucked.”

It’s hard to imagine a world where this wasn’t Coldplay’s story. It is now solidified in the history of music, and their prominent musical influence will surely endure long after them. “Here we are. The four of us still, somehow. Slightly leaner, and a little bit more beard-y. But here we are.”

Coldplay said:

Coldplay concert in Singapore: Review and setlist of the band's first night at the National Stadium

The first Singapore show of Coldplay's record-breaking Music Of The Spheres world tour saw a mix of electrifying and heartwarming performances, despite a few technical hiccups, at the Singapore National Stadium.

Hazeeq Sukri

It finally happened. After months of lamenting my inability to secure a ticket , I eventually snagged a seat at the first of Coldplay's six shows in Singapore this year. Suffice it to say, the months of agony paid off.

Music Of The Spheres marks the British rock band's return to Singapore – seven years after their A Head Full of Dreams tour – and they did not disappoint. In fact, one could say they've achieved a Higher Power.

The night started with a series of performances by opening acts Jinan Laetitia and Jasmine Sokko – both of whom captivated concert-goers with their respective charms.

coldplay world tour songs

Indonesian singer Jinan Laetitia soothed the crowd with her ethereal voice while Singaporean singer-songwriter Jasmine Sokko worked her magic with her masterful crowd work. The way these two artistes commanded the stage deserves praise and I'm sure they've succeeded in converting many new fans.

coldplay world tour songs

At 8.30pm, the National Stadium drowned in a sea of screams as the members of Coldplay emerged from under the stage and made their way up, before launching into the songs Music Of The Sphere and Higher Power.

The crowd, myself included, immediately got hyped up upon hearing Chris Martin's emotional vocals and the group's mesmerising instrument skills. Add the dazzling lights from our LED wristbands into the mix and it seemed like we were in for a smooth-sailing ride.

That is until it was time for Coldplay to perform The Scientist and Paradise.

coldplay world tour songs

Due to a technical fault with the screen, the group had to restart Paradise which admittedly dampened the vibe slightly. But hey, it was a minor inconvenience and Coldplay bounced back quickly.

What was  weird, however, was when Chris Martin's piano stopped working as he was singing The Scientist. This prompted him to stop the performance and ask the stage crew to get it fixed.

At this point, the show could have easily stopped dead in its tracks and I wouldn't have blamed Coldplay. However, Martin – being the consummate professional that he is – immediately joked with the audience to diffuse the tension.

Without missing a beat, he then partnered with Jonny Buckland to perform an acoustic version of The Scientist, with Buckland's guitar replacing the piano – giving birth to one of the best renditions of the song I've heard.

It takes a special kind of group to turn a potential disaster into a stellar highlight, and this incident proved that Coldplay deserves all the accolades. I'm happy to report that after overcoming these obstacles, the band was in full force for the rest of the night – locking the audience in with hits such as Hymn For The Weekend, Yellow and My Universe.

The full set list of Coldplay's first Singapore show is as follows:

  • Music Of The Spheres
  • Higher Power
  • Adventure Of A Lifetime
  • The Scientist
  • Viva La Vida
  • Hymn For The Weekend
  • Charlie Brown
  • Human Heart
  • People Of The Pride
  • Infinity Sign
  • Something Just Like This
  • My Universe
  • A Sky Full Of Stars
  • Don't Panic

coldplay world tour songs

Despite being a longtime fan of Coldplay, I ended up learning something new about the band after this concert: The depth of their sincerity. Both in connecting with their fans and making the world a better place.

There were many instances during the concert (and tour) where this sincerity was highlighted – from the kinetic dance floor and electric bikes that powered the show to the green transport options for fans heading home .

The one that spoke the most to me was when he brought two audience members onstage in the middle of the show. Just like the mother-son pair at Coldplay's Tokyo Dome concert , these two fans had also recently lost someone close to them and requested the band to play Everglow – which Martin, of course, obliged.

However, before Martin could start singing, one of the fans onstage whipped out his phone – presumably to record the performance – leading the 46-year-old singer to stop him and impart some wisdom.

"You don't need to film this now, my brother. I'm right here. We're having a real connection," he said as the audience laughed.

Sure, it was a light-hearted incident but it underscored Coldplay's commitment to being in the moment with their fans, which I would argue has led to some of their most powerful performances.

With five more shows to go, Coldplay is poised to deliver one of Singapore's most memorable concert experiences. From its sustainability initiatives to production values, almost every aspect of the show ranked highly in my opinion, save for a few hiccups here and there.

But hey, nobody said it was easy.

Coldplay Announce 2022 World Tour

By Madison Bloom and Jazz Monroe

Coldplay

Coldplay have announced a world tour behind their Max Martin–produced album Music of the Spheres . After declining to tour the album’s predecessor, Everyday Life , for environmental reasons, the band have pledged to cut tour emissions by 50 percent and adopt a broad model for sustainability, with each show powered exclusively by renewable energy. Coldplay plan to eliminate “significantly more CO2 than the tour produces” with initiatives including the planting of one tree for each ticket sold. Ten percent of all tour earnings will enter a fund for “environmental and socially conscious causes,” according to a press release. Check out the dates below.

In a statement, Coldplay said they were “very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis.” They continued, “So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn.”

Initiatives include the use of solar installations at every venue, as well as energy generated from waste cooking oil, a kinetic stadium floor, and kinetic bikes powered by fans. A mobile, rechargeable show battery touted as the first of its kind will store the energy. The band will encourage fans to use low-carbon transport with an app that offers venue discounts as rewards, and will discourage single-use plastic bottles by providing free water. The band has also enlisted climate experts at Imperial College London’s Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment to track the tour’s environmental impact.

H.E.R. will support most of the shows, with London Grammar on board for some dates.

Coldplay launched their Music of the Spheres rollout back in April with the release of lead single “ Higher Power .” They didn’t announce the album proper until July, and followed the news with two more tracks: “ Colortura ” and “ My Universe .” The latter features K-pop superstars BTS, and was released with a sci-fi visual directed by Dave Meyers.

Watch Coldplay's Dazzling Live Performance of 'A Sky Full of Stars' from New Concert Film (Exclusive)

Coldplay - Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate hits theaters on April 19 and April 23

coldplay world tour songs

Coldplay is coming soon to a screen near you!

The British rockers recently announced the concert film Coldplay - Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate , with a highlight being their live version of the 2014 hit "A Sky Full of Stars" — which PEOPLE is exclusively premiering.

The song features the stadium awash in lights as fans hold up LED wristbands in unison to emulate a star-filled sky, captured by 30 cameras, racing drones and 360° filming techniques.

The concert film was shot in Buenos Aires in late 2022, where Chris Martin , Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion played a sold-out, 10-night run at River Plate Stadium.

A live broadcast of the show aired in October, but a director's cut by Paul Dugdale is set to hit more than 2,000 theaters across dozens of countries on April 19 and April 23.

The film will feature appearances by H.E.R. and Jin , who was on hand to perform the live debut of his hit " The Astronaut," co-written by Coldplay .

Coldplay classics like "Yellow," "The Scientist," "Fix You," "Viva la Vida," and "My Universe" also all make the cut in the movie, which features unseen footage, interviews and backstage access, plus a behind-the-scenes short film.

The show is part of the band's Music of the Spheres Tour in support of the album of the same name, which was released in October 2021.

The record, Coldplay's ninth, featured hits like "Higher Power" and the BTS collaboration "My Universe," and was nominated for album of the year and best pop vocal album at the 2023 Grammy Awards .

The tour resumed in Brazil last month, and will return to the West Coast in September. The band made it a point to make the tour sustainable; it's powered by renewable energy, and every show features solar panels. Coldplay has also pledged to cut tour emissions by 50%, and have one tree planted for every ticket sold.

SINGAPORE: With good infrastructure, easy connectivity and a track record in making large-scale events work, Singapore is a popular concert tour stop for international artistes.

So much so that it has a reputation akin to a luxury brand which promises a smooth performance and a good time not just for the audience, but the celebrity and those working on the tour.

“There are some who call Singapore the ‘LV destination’ of Southeast Asia,” said Ms Gabriela Chan, the marketing manager of concert promoter CK Star Entertainment in Singapore. “LV” refers to luxury label Louis Vuitton.

“It’s a very different image and experience that the country offers,” she added, citing factors such as venues with state-of-the-art facilities, supportive policies, and a clean and safe environment.

“All these matter for the artistes and touring agencies, and that’s why Singapore remains attractive.”

After the COVID-19 pandemic, concerts have made a roaring comeback, with a string of A-listers performing – some even for multiple days – in Singapore.

These include Mandopop star Jay Chou and K-pop group Blackpink who have enthralled tens of thousands of fans at the National Stadium. At neighbouring Indoor Stadium, Hong Kong's "Heavenly King" Jacky Cheung performed a record 11 nights in July .

The National Stadium is set to host British band Coldplay for six shows next January, followed in March by American popstar Taylor Swift also for  six shows . Singapore will be the only stop that Swift is making in Southeast Asia.

Both concerts ignited a buying frenzy, with hundreds of thousands of tickets selling out within hours. Additional tickets for Coldplay that were released earlier this month have also been snapped up.

Adding to the concert calendar are upcoming performances by Taiwanese rock band Mayday and British musician Ed Sheeran.

This string of concerts isn’t just music to the ears of fans. Singapore’s local economy stands to benefit as well, with concert promoters and associated businesses seeing a brisk recovery and spillover effects for others in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Still, industry players have cited challenges such as rising costs and manpower shortages. Some are also worried about a slide in consumer demand if the global economy weakens further.

Regionally, other countries are also hoping to muscle in on Singapore's concert market with their huge domestic audience.

World-class venues, positioning as regional events capital behind Singapore's concert hub status

Consumers willing to splurge.

Like most parts of the world, demand for live concerts in Singapore hit a high over the past year.

It's not just artistes – both die-hard fans and casual listeners are keen to return to live shows and have so far been undeterred by pricey tickets.

Local concert promoters did not reveal how much ticket prices have risen. For example, GHY Culture & Media – the organiser of Jay Chou’s world tour in Singapore and elsewhere like Malaysia and Thailand – only said ticket prices saw a “marginal increase” as inflation drove up operating costs.

“Live entertainment remains popular because it offers a unique and immersive experience that cannot be replicated by other forms of entertainment,” said GHY’s regional senior group director of concert organisation and management Adeline Low.

More than two years of missing out on live entertainment also means consumers are willing to splurge on some “luxury” items such as concerts, said IMC Group Asia’s chief operating officer Romell Song.

Beyond local concertgoers, the slew of international acts is also attracting fans from around the region, including Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, concert promoters said.

This means the resurgence in live concerts can benefit the local economy on multiple fronts.

Doing a back-of-the-envelope calculation, an associate professor in marketing estimated that Taylor Swift's concert leg in Singapore could yield S$67 million (US$48.8 million) in ticket sales.

This was based on her six sold-out shows, with an average ticket price of S$250 and assuming about 45,000 seats available each night, said Associate Professor Lau Kong Cheen from Singapore University of Social Science’s (SUSS) business school.

It is “a huge amount” that does not even take into account another big revenue generator – merchandise sales, he added.

Contracts between the artistes, touring agents and local promoters will vary. In some cases, half of the sales revenue, after deducting relevant taxes and ticketing costs, may go to payment for the venue, local contractors involved in the production and backstage operations, and other service providers engaged for the show, said Assoc Prof Lau.

coldplay world tour songs

Visitors who are in town for a concert will also spend on accommodation, shopping, food and beverage, thereby boosting these other industries.

Beyond monetary benefits, the wave of A-list concerts helps to add to the image of Singapore as a travel destination.

“With this happening, it creates a lot of a buzz about Singapore. People will be curious – like, why is Singapore the only stop for Taylor Swift in Southeast Asia – and it may give them a reason to want to come here,” Assoc Prof Lau told CNA.

“This branding is important because when travel was very much restricted over the last two to three years, some tourists may have forgotten about Singapore.

“By creating this vibrant image, it will help put Singapore back in the minds of international tourists. As more come and go back home to tell their friends about us, that creates the ripple effect for more to want to come and visit.”

INDUSTRY RECOVERY UNDERWAY

Going by earnings results, some concert organisers in Singapore are already reaping the benefits of the recovery.

The live entertainment and events industries were among the hardest hit by the pandemic – they were the first to be shuttered and the last to resume full-scale operations.

The turnaround is “clearly evident” for those listed on the Singapore Exchange, said Mr Paul Chew, head of Phillip Securities Research.

Unusual, which organised Jacky Cheung’s concert here in July, reported an eightfold increase in annual revenue for the financial year 2023. The firm swung back into profitability with earnings of S$1.8 million, and said in a bourse filing that business is “back to normal”.

GHY saw a 58 per cent increase in revenue for the first half of the year, helped by its concert production business which produced sold-out Jay Chou concerts in Malaysia and Australia. The company remains in the red due to foreign exchange losses but said it is eyeing a turnaround this year.

“Concerts have been sold out and some even extended. By using the same location and equipment, gross margins will be even higher than previously,” said Mr Chew, adding that other margin drivers include advertisements and sponsors, as well as “room to raise prices” given the pent-up consumer demand.

But concert promoters disagree, saying that staging shows at bigger venues and for multiple nights do not necessarily translate into economies of scale and guarantee profits.

“You may be able to divide some costs over multiple shows, but some costs may also increase in tandem with the number of shows,” said IMC’s Mr Song.

These costs, such as artiste fees, rental for the venue and equipment, as well as manpower, could also go up “non-linearly so concert promoters still have to go into the details”.

Commentary: This is what Taylor Swift could do for Singapore’s stock market

More broadly, overall operating costs – from rental of venues, equipment and manpower to services like ticketing and lodging for the artiste and the touring team – have gone up by double digits from before the pandemic.

Hotel costs, for one, have risen by 30 per cent, said CK Star Entertainment's Ms Chan. Manpower costs have jumped between 25 and 50 per cent – with backstage runners and translators among the jobs that have seen the highest increase.

Rental of production equipment is also now more expensive, with the exit of several production companies during the pandemic and the recent surge in demand.

This scarcity of resources – from manpower to touring and concert equipment such as lighting, set productions and AV systems – could drive up production costs further and “potentially be a problem” for the concert industry, said GHY’s Ms Low.

As for raising ticket prices, Mr Song said that while there is “some small premium to be enjoyed” amid pent-up demand, there is a limit as to how much prices can be raised before consumers walk away.

“It would be wrong to fleece the consumer because we still want their trust over a long period of time,” he said.

“We must be cautious to think that because of the general optimism projected by quite a few sell-out concerts in Singapore, these times are invariably rosy for the industry.

“The general principles of doing business still apply and audiences in the region are discerning.”

REGIONAL COMPETITION

Meanwhile, neighbouring countries with an inherent advantage – their large domestic markets – are also eyeing a slice of the booming concert market.

CK Star Entertainment, which also operates in Indonesia, has noticed more live shows and concerts taking place outside Jakarta.

“The government is putting in effort to bring these events to other cities so instead of having all the concerts in Jakarta, we see Bali being added as a tour stop now for some artistes and it freshens things up,” said Ms Chan.

Indonesia also has “very aggressive” corporate sponsors, which are undoubtedly a “major incentive and help” for promoters, said Mr Iqbal Ameer, founder and group chief executive of Livescape Group. Based in Malaysia, the concerts and events organiser has offices in Singapore and Indonesia.

“In the past, artistes will choose either Singapore or Indonesia but nowadays, it’s getting very common to see a lot more artistes including Indonesia as a stop for their world or Asia tour,” said Ms Chan.

Another vibrant market that is becoming a music festival hotspot is Bangkok.

“Festivals are part of Thailand’s culture, like Songkran, so you know it's a place to go for a good time,” said Mr Iqbal, adding that Bangkok now sees at least one mega music festival each month.

Still, land transport and air connectivity, as well as government policies, remain a consideration for those looking at holding an event in these countries, concert promoters said.

Elsewhere in the region, Malaysia also has a large domestic multi-lingual market and good venues to boot, although recent events may have dented some market confidence.

The government halted a music festival in the capital Kuala Lumpur in July, after the frontman of British pop rock band The 1975 kissed a male bandmate onstage and criticised the country’s anti-LGBT laws. The 1975 is also banned from performing in Malaysia.

“People were worried when it happened,” said Mr Iqbal. “I’m not saying that events are not going to happen after this but it's making everybody think twice.

“An artiste is going to think twice before coming. A sponsor is going to think twice before they sponsor an event. The fans are going to think thrice before buying a ticket, and this doesn’t make it easier for event organisers who have just survived the pandemic.”

The country’s Arts, Live Festival and Events Association sounded more upbeat, with its chairman describing the cancellation as an “isolated incident”.

“I think most artistes understand that if they are in a country, they will need to follow the guidelines of that country,” said Mr Para Rajagopal. “What The 1975 did is not something that should be done.”

There have also been opposition against concerts and performances held by foreign artistes, with the most recent coming from the political leader of Islamist party Parti Islam Se-Malaysia who called for the cancellation of Coldplay’s concert in Malaysia .

Such calls are undeniably “bad press”, but Mr Rajagopal said they remain the “minority”.

“That’s how it's been all this while and I think people understand how politics are played – not just in Malaysia but everywhere.”

The bigger issue facing concert promoters in Malaysia, said Mr Rajagopal and Mr Iqbal, is the roll-out of a 25 per cent entertainment tax that threatens to eat into the industry's wafer-thin margins. The Arts, Live Festival and Events Association said it will continue to call for a review of the tax.

By comparison, Singapore is seen as “a relatively safe venue” for concerts given supportive policies, said Assoc Prof Lau.

The country continues to retain a “sweet spot” in the region, although concert promoters said Singapore can do more to spice up its variety of concert venues.

“We definitely have the best facilities and venues, but we don’t have more unique types of event spaces,” said Ms Chan. “Different sizes, layouts and requirements can help to make it more interesting for the artistes and audiences, who might already be very familiar with our usual concert venues.”

One interesting alternative is the Pasir Panjang Power Station, which has recently hosted a range of events such as music concerts and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s election meeting.

And there can be more.

“That's obviously not a standard concert hall or theatre-style venue. It’s more of a standing space, but it’s big enough and it’s these kinds of spaces that can allow us to be more creative,” Ms Chan said.

“We see there's some competition but for now, there isn’t a big impact on Singapore because Singapore is still an attractive location.”

Echoing that, Assoc Prof Lau said: “Each country has a different selling point. There will always be competition but our strategic location and being an English-speaking nation with good infrastructure and transport should put us in a very sweet spot for now.”
