After Seven Stressful Months: How William and Kate Are Planning Their Summer Holidays

T he British royal family is reportedly gearing up for their annual summer break, looking forward to some much-needed relaxation after a stressful year.

Traditionally, King Charles III and Queen Camilla spend their summer holidays in August at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, accompanied by their closest family members, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children.

It is still uncertain whether William and Kate will travel to Scotland this year due to the princess's cancer treatment.

But a royal expert believes that a summer at Balmoral could be exactly what Princess Kate needs to recuperate.

Royal Family Confirms: Queen Mary Hit in Greenland Scooter Incident

Summer at Balmoral

Royal expert and former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond noted that the first seven months of the year have been particularly tough for the British royal family, especially for Princess Kate and King Charles.

"Everyone would like to have a carefree summer," Bond told OK! magazine.

She suggested that this year's trip to Scotland would be especially meaningful for the family.

"It has been a damned difficult year for the royal family so far, and nothing would please the King more than to bring his immediate family together for a while at the peace of Balmoral to take stock of the last, incredibly difficult months and look to the future."

Kate’s Health and Family Support

Princess Catherine is currently undergoing preventive chemotherapy, which raises uncertainty about her ability to spend part of the summer holidays at Balmoral.

Bond, however, is confident that if Kate is able to join, the whole family will surround her with love, support, and renewed strength.

"In the meantime, she wants to make the summer months as fun and carefree as possible for the children's sake, after everything she has been through."

An Alternative: Anmer Hall

Another option for William and Kate to spend their summer holidays with their three children, Prince George (10), Princess Charlotte (9), and Prince Louis (6), is to plan a longer stay at their country estate, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk.

This setting offers the family opportunities to play garden games, explore the surrounding area, and visit the beach.

King Charles and Prince William Planning First Overseas Trip Since Cancer Treatments

is king william travel still operating

In his first overseas trip since his February announcement that he was undergoing cancer treatments, King Charles III will travel to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, as will Prince William and Queen Camilla .

Charles has long been a fixture at the June 6 events in Normandy and the UK, which annually mark the coordinated air and sea landings that led to the liberation of France and the eventual end of World War II. It was unclear if he'd be participating in person this year, given his recent diagnosis and a subsequent pause in royal duties.

That pause ended last month , when King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the Macmillan Cancer Centre at University College Hospital to meet with patients and staff. On Friday, Buckingham Palace announced that his schedule would gear up in June, with a series of events to mark what remains the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The commemorations begin on June 5, when Charles, Camilla, and Prince William will attend a ceremony at Southsea Common in the English city of Portsmouth, one of the primary starting points for D-Day troops in 1944. According to the BBC , that event will include “light displays, readings and music.”

From there, Charles and Camilla will travel to France, where they will visit the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer on June 6, Sky News reports . Along with officials from the Ministry of Defence and Royal British Legion, 23 surviving D-Day veterans are expected to attend.

Meanwhile, William will travel to Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, for a commemoration of the Canadian troops' contribution to the effort. After that, he'll make the trip to Omaha Beach, Saint Laurent sur Mer to stand in for his father at the annual international commemorative ceremony, where he'll be joined by “25 heads of state and veterans from around the world.”

In years past, William has been joined by wife Kate Middleton , but she won't be in attendance this year, the AP reports . Similar to Charles, Middleton is recovering from treatments related to a cancer discovery announced in March .

Following that announcement, William also stopped back from public events, instead spending private time with his family. Earlier this month, it was reported that William is “digging deep” to support his father and wife during their respective illnesses, with a royal source saying that “William is prioritizing giving her all the time she needs to get better." He resumed his schedule of public engagements in late April , saying then that his wife and children are “all doing well, thank you.”

Prince George May Have to Follow Royal Travel Protocol After His 12th Birthday

Prince William and King Charles had to follow this rule as well

preview for 7 Times Prince William Proved to Be the Best Dad

When the young prince turns 12 in 2025, he will likely be required to follow a royal travel rule that has been in place for decades, according to The Mirror . The custom secures the future of the monarchy by restricting who can travel together on the same plane—and once an heir to the throne turns 12, he or she must fly separately from all the other heirs. Prince William , as well as his father King Charles III , had to adhere to the same protocol.

london, england june 02 prince george, prince louis and princess charlotte in the carriage procession at trooping the colour during queen elizabeth ii platinum jubilee on june 02, 2022 in london, england the platinum jubilee of elizabeth ii is being celebrated from june 2 to june 5, 2022, in the uk and commonwealth to mark the 70th anniversary of the accession of queen elizabeth ii on 6 february 1952 trooping the colour, also known as the queens birthday parade, is a military ceremony performed by regiments of the british army that has taken place since the mid 17th century it marks the official birthday of the british sovereign this year, from june 2 to june 5, 2022, there is the added celebration of the platinum jubilee of elizabeth ii in the uk and commonwealth to mark the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne on 6 february 1952 photo by karwai tangwireimage

Former royal pilot Graham Laurie spoke to A Right Royal Podcast about the change once Prince William turned 12 in 1994. “Interestingly, we flew all four: the Prince, the Princess, Prince William and Prince Harry, up until Prince William was 12 years old. After that, he had to have a separate aircraft and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty,” he explained. “When William became 12, he would fly normally in a 125 from Northolt and we would fly the 146 out with the other three on.”

The rule preserves the royal family’s future in the event of an accident, but can be eschewed with the current monarch’s permission. And while neither William nor Kate have shared whether or not they’ll follow the protocol with George, it’s unclear if it’ll be the young prince who flies solo. There’s a chance he could continue to travel with his mother and siblings while William flies on a different aircraft.

This isn’t the only morbid rule royals have to follow: They’re also required to travel with a black outfit in case someone in the family were to pass away while they’re abroad. That exact scenario played out in 1952, when Queen Elizabeth’s father King George died while she was in Kenya on a royal tour. Upon returning to the U.K., a black dress was brought onboard to her for a quick change before she disembarked the plane.

Prince William Returns to His Former Workplace in New Royal Role from King Charles

The Prince of Wales paid a visit to the Royal Air Force station where he worked as a helicopter pilot for three years

Prince William is back on the job in Wales.

On Tuesday, July 9, the Prince of Wales, 42, was photographed visiting RAF Valley in rainy Anglesey for the first time as the Royal Honorary Air Commodore of the Royal Air Force station. It was announced that King Charles had appointed him as Air Commodore in August 2023.

It was a return to a familiar place for Prince William, as it's where he worked ahead of his marriage to Kate Middleton . The royal was based at RAF Valley while working as an RAF search and rescue pilot from 2010 to 2013.

RAF Valley is the only Royal Air Force station in Wales and home of the No. 4 Flying Training School, which is tasked with training the next generation of fighter pilots as well as preparing aircrew for mountain and maritime operations around the world.

During his visit, the Prince of Wales toured the hub and met personnel to learn more about their daily operations and life at RAF Valley, which is the second-largest employer on the island, and connected with the families of those stationed there. William began at the Air Traffic Control Tower, where he checked out the control rooms and heard about the ongoing $56 million project to refurbish the base's second runway.

He then moved to the fire and rescue station, where he met crew members and participated in a simulated fire response exercise. William sat in the passenger seat of a fire truck and operated a water pump to extinguish the blaze.

The division delivers year-round airfield rescue firefighting and structural firefighting cover for RAF Valley as well as further support for the station’s relief landing ground, RAF Mona.

The heir to the throne then spent time with engineers, flight instructors and trainees before presenting the Prince of Wales Award. The annual prize recognizes the top Qualified Flying Instructor within the No. 4, and this year went to Flight Lieutenant Jake Fleming.

In a key meeting, Prince William met members of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service, which is on constant call for search and rescue support, aircraft post-crash and incident management and medical aid in the mountains. The royal heard about the team's experiences providing life-saving support in the local area.

Prince William embarked on an aerial career in the military in 2009, joining C Flight, 22 Squadron as Lieutenant Wales (a nod to King Charles' Prince of Wales title at the time, which William now holds) at RAF Valley in September 2010. He served as a search and rescue pilot for three years, during which he undertook 156 search and rescue operations, a routine operational deployment to the Falkland Islands and qualified as an operational Captain, his royal bio outlines.

The Prince of Wales left operational duties with the Armed Forces in September 2013, shortly after the birth of his first child, Prince George . He later retrained as an Air Ambulance Pilot and worked for East Anglian Air Ambulance from 2015 to 2017.

Prince William and Princess Kate's special connection to Wales deepened when King Charles announced in his first speech as monarch that his eldest son and daughter-in-law were named the Prince and Princess of Wales. The traditional titles have been for the heir to the throne and his wife for centuries, and a royal source told PEOPLE that the couple was focused on "deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time."

The couple visited Wales for the first time since becoming the Prince and Princess of Wales as soon as they could — on September 27, 2022, one day after the royal family's mourning period for the late Queen Elizabeth came to an end.

"He is throwing himself into the new role," Rev. Steven Bunting, who hosted the couple at St. Thomas's Church in Swansea, told PEOPLE . "The fact that they've come straight here on day one says it all."

Prince William stepped out solo for his latest engagement in Wales, as Princess Kate, 42, privately prioritizes her health outside of the spotlight. The Princess of Wales is continuing to undergo treatment for cancer and appeared at her first royal event this year at Trooping the Colour on June 15.

Prince William thanks public for messages to King Charles and Kate, says they mean ‘a great deal’

LONDON (AP) — Prince William returned to royal duties Wednesday for the first time since his father, King Charles III, announced his cancer diagnosis and his wife, Kate, was hospitalized for abdominal surgery.

Speaking about his families’ health scares in public for the first time, the 41-year-old heir to the throne thanked the public for their “kind messages of support” at a charity gala dinner. Earlier in the day, he performed an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days,” William told the gala dinner for London’s Air Ambulance Charity. “It means a great deal to us all.”

“It’s fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather medical focus, so I thought I’d come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all,” he added jokingly.

The royal, who is a former air ambulance helicopter pilot, met fellow pilots and chatted with guests including Hollywood star Tom Cruise at the black-tie event.

William temporarily stepped away from public duties last month to help care for Kate and their three young children following her operation for an undisclosed condition. The Princess of Wales, formerly Kate Middleton, isn’t expected to resume public duties until April.

Charles’ cancer diagnosis earlier this week is putting extra pressure on the royal family, with the king suspending his public appearances to focus on treatment and recovery. While receiving treatment for an unspecified form of cancer, Charles will continue with behind-the-scenes work such as reviewing and signing state papers.

“His absence is putting a lot of pressure on the other members of the royal family, who are certainly up to it,” said Sally Bedell Smith, author of “Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life.” “And having one of the great stars of the royal family, the Princess of Wales, in recuperation from a surgery” magnifies those strains.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to call the king Wednesday evening to wish him well as he recovers. In-person audiences are expected to resume later this month.

Charles’ illness comes at an awkward time for the House of Windsor.

The king, who ascended the throne just 17 months ago, has pledged to reduce the cost of the monarchy, in part by keeping a lid on the number of “working royals” whose public duties are supported by taxpayer funds.

But with two of the most visible family members out sick, it will be more challenging for the family to keep up.

In addition to the widely publicized pomp and ceremony of royal processions and state visits, the Windsors attend hundreds of little-known events every year to recognize the accomplishments of the general public and mark local events such as the opening of libraries and community centers. Hundreds of charities cherish royal appearances, which give visibility and credibility to their good work among potential donors.

The 75-year-old king was seen in public for the first time since his cancer diagnosis when he left his offices at Clarence House on Tuesday after a brief reunion with his younger son, Prince Harry.

Harry arrived in London from California less than 24 hours after Buckingham Palace announced the king’s cancer diagnosis. The meeting has raised hopes that the pair can repair their troubled relationship after Harry publicly criticized the royal family for unconscious racism and complained about the way his American biracial wife, former actor Meghan Markle, was treated by palace officials.

Harry and Meghan, once seen as stars of the royal family who could help the Windsors connect with a younger generation, walked away from royal duties in 2020 and now live in California.

How Prince William and Prince George just broke a royal travel rule

The royals soon won't be able to travel together.

The Duchess of Cambridge was spotted disembarking a commercial flight on Sunday as she and her two youngest children, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis arrived in Scotland to spend their summer with the Queen at Balmoral.

In a video shared on TikTok of the Cambridges stepping off the plane, royal fans were quick to notice the Duchess was not travelling with her husband Prince William, nor their eldest son Prince George. I f we are to assume their eldest was travelling with his father, the family have technically broken a major royal travel rule - but how?

WATCH: Royal family travel secrets revealed

Royal protocol is that two heirs to the throne should never fly on the same flight together so that should there be an accident, the royal lineage is protected.

It is not clear whether the Duke and Duchess strictly follow this guidance, especially this summer when it is assumed Prince George travelled to Balmoral with his father.

Royal protocol states no two heirs can take a flight together

However, it does seem likely that Prince George will fly separately from his siblings on future trips considering he is next in line after Prince William.

Taking to social media to air their confusion after the video of Duchess Kate and her children was shared, one fan wrote: "Prince George cannot fly with his mother and siblings as he is heir to the throne."

Agreeing, another fan penned: "Notice how George is not with the group. I thought he is next in line for the throne after William?"

It's not the first time Prince William has broken this tradition. When his son was born, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took him on the same flight to Australia when Prince George was just nine months old.

The royals have previously taken the same flight

Reportedly, the Queen is able to overrule this travel protocol, particularly in the instance of little children. However, once Prince George turns 12, the Queen can no longer make this call.

He and Prince William will not be allowed to fly on a plane together - with no exceptions to the rule. Who knew royal travel could get so complicated?

King Charles and Prince William Canceled All Their Events This Week

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Mark Cuthbert/Getty Images

Between King Charles III 's and Kate Middleton' s cancer diagnoses, the royal family has had quite a tumultuous 2024. So when the news came down that the king and Prince William had canceled their public events for the week, some feared the worst.

Thankfully, the royals' sudden respite from the public eye has nothing to do with the health of the king, his daughter-in-law, nor anyone else in the family, for that matter. King Charles and Prince William are on hiatus following Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's call for a surprise general election , which is scheduled to take place on July 4. In light of this news, the working royals abruptly canceled their appearances, People reports. The outlet adds that the pair may not resume their public-facing duties until after the election—which is nearly six weeks away.

Per a statement from Buckingham Palace, which was published on May 22, the royal family will postpone any and all engagements “which may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign.” This is standard practice for the royal family, which is an apolitical entity by choice.

The British Royal Family Attend The Christmas Morning Service

King Charles just returned to public-facing duties only on April 30, following his treatment for cancer. Prince William, meanwhile, continued his work in the absence of both his father and his wife, who revealed her own cancer diagnosis on March 22 after several weeks out of the spotlight because of a planned abdominal surgery in early January.

In her video message to the world, Middleton, 42, called the diagnosis “a huge shock,” adding, “William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.”

“I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal in my mind, body, and spirits,” she continued. “Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support, and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.”

The One Travel Rule Prince William and Kate Middleton Constantly Break

Here's another way the royal family is different from the rest of us.

is king william travel still operating

The British royal family may appear to have it all, but when it comes to freedom of choice, that's where they fall short. Even when it comes to how they choose to travel together.

From not being able to eat shellfish or going to bed before the Queen, there are many rules family members must follow to stay in Her Majesty's good graces. And, there's one more big rule they must follow as well, and that is to avoid ever flying on the same plane together.

As Business Insider reported, it is an unwritten rule that the senior members of the royal family should avoid all traveling together in one plane in the extreme off-chance that tragedy strikes. This means Prince William technically should never be on board the same flight as either his father or his own children, for that matter.

However, that rule became rather impractical for William and his wife, Kate Middleton, as traveling separately from three small children would be rather tricky. So, in 2014, following the birth of Prince George, William and Kate asked the Queen for special permission to all fly together for their tour of Australia.

"They had to ask the Queen for permission, but she said yes," the royal press office told BBC's Newsround . The spokesperson added, "While there is no official rule on this, and royal heirs have traveled together in the past, it is something that the Queen has the final say on."

Elle further reported, the likely reason the Queen felt it was okay to say yes then is because aviation has become increasingly safe over the last several decades, much more so than when this royal rule was likely implemented.

Of course, Prince William, Kate, and the kids — including George and his younger siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — have all traveled extensively together since 2014, meaning this rule could be in the dust. But, maybe they should continue to ask grandma for permission just in case.

Getting internet service to all of king william proving to be a long process.

There are many pockets in America that don''t have reliable high-speed internet service, including more than 35% of rural areas.

Parts of central and northern King William fall under a contract with another company, Breezeline, which has yet to provide a date for the finalization of its project.

Recently, a spokesman for Breezeline (formerly Atlantic Broadband), the eighth-largest cable operator in the United States, provided an update on the company’s project to connect up to 1,233 homes and properties in King William County.

According to spokesman Andrew Walton, Breezeline received authorization from the Federal Communications Commission in August that it was awarded areas — three census block groups — through the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund.

“The walkout is almost complete in King William County and the design phase is next. Once that phase is completed we will establish an estimated timeline for the build-out. We are providing updates to the county as we make progress on this project,” Walton said in an email.

Breezeline announced on May 8 it will extend broadband internet to nearly 7,500 unserved homes and businesses in eastern Caroline County and Essex County. The company recently completed a $7.2 million, 150-mile fiber expansion to over 1,400 homes and businesses in Mathews, Caroline, Lancaster, and Middlesex counties.

Supervisor Ed Moren referred to the Breezeline project during a board meeting last November.

“They have up to five years to complete that effort. We are waiting for decisions on their end,” he said. “Hopefully, we will be able to start building that area sooner rather than later. … It is coming. It’s just a matter of when.”

All Points Senior Vice President Tom Innes backtracked on an earlier projection that the project to provide high-speed fiber to 2,236 locations in King William would be completed in August. He told the Board of Supervisors on May 8 the project is scheduled to be completed by Feb. 2024.

Some members of King William’s Board of Supervisors remain skeptical about the All Points project.

“I’m about as clear on all of this as a big bucket of mud,” Stephen Greenwood said. “The dates are all over the place.”

Moren admitted frustration but said all of the broadband providers are facing a “significant labor shortage.”

Travis Moskalski said All Points’ partner, Dominion Energy, appears to be “on the ball.”

“I want to make sure that All Points is equally on the ball. I know they have a lot of irons in the fire,” he said. “I don’t want to not be a squeaky wheel … so that we get this thing done and done on time.”

King William Island

Follow the step of explorer roald amundsen, information about king william island.

The island (the 61st-largest island in the world and Canada's 15th-largest island) and the surrounding area was the region where the Erebus and Terror ended up.

It is now known the two ships became stranded in 1846 when frozen in the sea ice northwest of the island. After abandoning the two ships, most of the crew died from exposure and starvation as they attempted to walk south near the western coastline. Two of Franklin's men were buried at Hall Point on the island's south coast. It wasn't until June 29, 1981, that researchers finally had luck. A team led by Canadian archaeologist Owen Beattie, found 31 pieces of human bone fragments on the southern tip of the island, called Booth Point. On September 9, 2014 the Victoria Strait Expedition located the wreck of HMS Erebus. The HMS Terror, was found in 2016 in Terror Bay, off the south-west coast of King William Island.

The area also played an important for the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen on the expedition through the Northwest Passage, spending nearly two years with his ship on the SE coast at what is now known as Gjoa Haven. The island is separated from the Boothia Peninsula by the James Ross Strait to the northeast, and the Rae Strait to the east. To the west is the Victoria Strait and beyond it Victoria Island. Within the Simpson Strait, to the south of the island, then the Adelaide Peninsula, part of mainland Canada. Queen Maud Gulf lies to the southwest.

Interesting facts about King William Island

Rae Strait between King William Island and the Boothia peninsula, and named after John Rae, who discovered the potential of this stretch of water that was the last link in the NW passage.

John Rae, an Orkney man who joined the Hudson Bay company, is one of the greatest polar explorers. Compared to many explorers, often with navy connections, that explored with a ship as base, John Rae and similar explorers went native, living and learning from the Inuit. John Rae was also the person who discovered the fate of the Franklin expedition from the Inuit, people who knew he could trust, including their reports that some of the last men had resorted to cannibalism. John Rae came back with the news but was denounced by Victorian society for suggesting that Englishmen, of all people, would resort to cannibalism. Only now is John ae getting the credit he deserves, perhaps the greatest British polar explorer.

Highlights Close to King William Island

Least Sandpiper - Bathurst Inlet

Bathurst Inlet

Also known as Kiluhiqtuq, a deep inlet on the Canadian mainland at the east end of Coronation Gulf, into which the Burnside and Western rivers empty.

The name, or its native equivalent Kingoak (Qingaut, nose mountain), is also used to identify the community of Bathurst Inlet located on the shore. Melville Sound opens into the eastern side of the inlet at Cape Croker, west of the Hurd Islands.

Since it is on the mainland a wider range of animals and birds might be encountered.

Greenland and Arctic Canada

Beechey Island

Key historical site where Franklin spent his first winter before the Erebus and Terror vanished to the outside World.

Made very sombre with the graves of three of Franklin’s men, and others, plus later memorials. Situated on the very southwest corner of Devon Island, separated by Barrow Strait, it is at a key ‘crossroad’ in the northwest Passage and was the main base in the search for Franklin.

This remote location is a key destination for everyone that visits the NW passage, with the main focus on the location, rather than wildlife, but offshore can be good for Beluga.

Narwhal

Bellot Strait

Narrow strait separating Somerset Island to the north from Murchison Promontory of Boothia Peninsula to the south, the northernmost part of mainland America.

The 2km (1.2 mi) wide and 25 km (16 mi) strait connects the Gulf of Boothia, Prince Regent Inlet, and Brentford Bay to the east with Peel Sound and Franklin Strait to the west. It became a strait on ‘one’ of the NW passage routes. On a map of the Canadian Arctic, unless you look in detail, it is easy to assume the Boothia Peninsula and Somerset Island is one peninsula. In many ways, with Bellot Strait locked in ice much of the year, it is like the peninsula. Since it is so narrow, it can be a place to look for Narwhal, and, along the shore, Polar Bear, or even wolf.

QuarkExpeditions_ Canada Epic High Arctic

Cambridge Bay

Situated on the SE coast of Victoria Island (the 8th largest in the World), and the largest community on the Island. As well as the community focus there is the history of the area

The first Europeans to reach Cambridge Bay were overland explorers led by Thomas Simpson in 1839; searching for the Northwest Passage and crossing the sea ice to Cambridge Bay by foot. Another overland expedition was led by John Rae who reached Cambridge Bay in 1851. The first ship to reach the bay was HMS Enterprise under Richard Collinson who wintered there in 1852/53. Both Rae and Collinson were searching for Franklin's lost expedition.

Greenland and Arctic Canada

The location, at the northern tip of King William Island, where some of the men of the Franklin expedition created a summer camp in the summer of 1847 for magnetic observations.

By late December 1847/January 1848, the officers and men left the camp in a hurry and headed back to the ships. The site as ‘discovered’ in 1859 by the McClintock expedition searching for evidence of Franklin’s Expedition, finding artifacts.

Two Seabirds

Coburg Island

Between Ellesmere Island and Devon Island at the entrance to Jones Sound.

It is part of the Nirjutiqavvik National Wildlife Area and Cambridge Point, with spectacular cliffs that are an important location for breeding seabirds including black guillemot, black-legged kittiwake, glaucous gull, northern fulmar, and thick-billed murre. Offshore waters are also good for marine mammals.

coronation gulf

Coronation Gulf

The gulf is between Victoria Island and mainland Nunavut. To the northwest it connects with Dolphin and Union Strait, thence the Beaufort Sea and Arctic Ocean; to the northeast it connects with Dease Strait and thence Queen Maud Gulf.

The northwest point is Cape Krusenstern (not the Cape Krusenstern in Alaska). South of that is Richardson Bay and the mouths (from west to east) of the Rae River, Richardson River and the large Coppermine River, Napaaktoktok River, and the Asiak River. At the southeast end is the large Bathurst Inlet. At the northeast end is Cape Flinders on the Kent Peninsula. In the center of the gulf lies the Duke of York Archipelago.

croker bay

One of the deeper inlets into Devon Island, on the southeast side, but further west from Dundas Harbour. Great ship cruising with icebergs and the flat-topped mountain geology of this part of Devon Island.

Greenland and Arctic Canada

Dundas Harbour

First built in 1924 as a Canadian outpost on the southeast coast of Devon Island, with concern about sovereignty of this Arctic Archipelago. It was settled several times but finally abandoned with a ‘ghost town’ feel. Tundra is good to explore and to ship cruise the nearby inlet.

Ross Fort

Fort Ross is an abandoned former trading post on Somerset Island. First established in 1937 by the Hudson's Bay Company, it was only operational to 1948, as severe ice conditions in the surrounding waters made the site hard to reach and economically unviable.

It is interesting to visit a Hudson’s Bay Company hut and to contemplate the location. It is situated at the eastern end of Bellot Strait on a south-eastern peninsula of Somerset Island, a key location in the northwest Passage. Also good for a rage of high arctic species.

Gjoa Haven, Nunavut

Situated on the SE side of King William Island it is the location where the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his crew spent some time on his route through the Northwest Passage.

In October 1903 he put Gjøa into a natural harbour on the southeast coast of King William Island. He stayed there for nearly two years, learning from the local Netsilik Inuit, and the skills to live off the land and travel efficiently in the Arctic environment. This knowledge proved to be vital for Amundsen's later successful exploration to the South Pole. He also explored the Boothia Peninsula, searching for the exact location of the North Magnetic Pole. Today there is a community at Gjoa Haven and a popular landing for cruise ships. Permanent European-style settlement started in 1927, as a Hudson's Bay Company trading outpost. The settlement attracted the traditionally nomadic Inuit people as they adapted a more settled lifestyle. By 2016 the population was 1,324.

Grise Fjord

On Ellesmere Island (10th largest in the World) and the most northerly community in Canada. In Inuktitut it is called Aujuittuq—”the place that never thaws”.

It is the only ‘public’ community on Ellesmere Island, created in 1953 by the Canadian Government with a relocation of Inuit families from Inukjuak, Quebec. It is also one of the coldest inhabited places in the world, with an average yearly temperature of −16.5 °C (2.3 °F). There is an airport, but even today it can be a challenging place to land, or even get ashore by Zodiac from a ship.

kugulutuk

Located at the mouth of the Coppermine River in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, Canada, on the southwest side of Coronation Gulf, southwest of Victoria Island.

It is the westernmost community in Nunavut, near the border with the Northwest Territories. There is an airport and Kugulutuk is a location where small expedition ships may drop and pick up passengers before or after a trip through the northwest Passage (rather than a longer trip right through the Bering Strait).

Greenland and Baffin Bay

This long sound separates Somerset Island on the east from Prince of Wales Island on the west. To the north it opens onto Parry Channel. To the south, at the mouth the Bellot Strait, it merges with Franklin Strait.

Sir John Franklin passed through the strait in 1846, an unseasonably warm summer, since typically Peel Sound is frozen. The east side of Peel Sound was traced by James Clark Ross in 1849, searching for Franklin, and in 1858 Francis Leopold McClintock tried to penetrate it and was blocked by ice. Even today cruise ships attempting the NW passage prefer the Bellot Strait route compared to Peel Sound.

Looking west towards the island

Prince Leopold Island

This island is in a key location in Lancaster Sound at the junction of Prince Regent Inlet and Barrow Strait, off the northwest coast of Somerset Island. It has some really impressive and steep seabird cliffs that is one of the most important sites in the Canadian Arctic and a bird sanctuary.

Also good area to look for marine mammals and other Arctic wildlife.

Ross's Goose

Queen Maud Gulf

Separates south-eastern Victoria Island from the mainland in Nunavut, Canada.

At its western end lies Cambridge Bay, leading to Dease Strait; to the east lies Simpson Strait; and to the north, Victoria Strait. It is home to the Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

Croker Bay, Nunavut, Canada

Radstock Bay

Situated close to the southwest corner of Devon Island with Viscount Melville Sound nearby.

Great ship cruising in a location close to where Lancaster Sound splits into a myriad of channels that made the exploration of the northwest passage so challenging.

Kayaking near Disko Island

Resolute & Cornwallis Island

A large island (96th in the world, 21st in Canada) at key location with Devon Island to the east, Bathurst Island to the west, and Somerset Island further to the South, across the main passage, with various smaller islands nearby.

Cornwallis Island is the location of Resolute, one of the most northerly settlements in Canada, certainly the most northern ‘town’. The airport is used as a hub to join cruise ships, though still a challenge, with a beach landing and a Zodiac cruise to get to and from the ship, with luggage!

Terror Bay-Northwest passage

The Location of the HMS Terror, (discovered in 2016) off the south-west coast of King William Island.

Curiously the name is coincidental, but it is a sheltered location suggesting the ship was sailed into the location, rather than drifting here. It is located in the south-western side of King William Island, the entrance to the bay marked by Fitzjames Island to the west and Queen Maud Gulf to the west, and Irving Islands to the east. Queen Maud Gulf is between the northern coast of the mainland and the south-eastern corner of Victoria Island.

Why William won't have to follow this travel rule when he becomes King - but Kate will

Prince William Kate Middleton flying

The royals have their own unique set of rules and traditions when flying. Did you know that the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton's dresses get their own seats on a plane? Or that the late Queen Elizabeth II always carried very specific teabags with her when she travelled? And there's also the little known fact that the senior royals reportedly carry bags of their own blood type .

Prince William and Kate Middleton are also known to break the royal rules when going abroad . The couple often fly with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, which is against royal protocol as two heirs must not travel together in order to protect the royal lineage.

However, when William becomes King there will be one major difference in the way he travels compared to his wife - and there's a rule that cannot be broken.

Currently, when the the Wales' go overseas they must adhere to passport checks and go through immigration. But when William takes the throne, he will no longer have to do this. Instead, the rules that now apply to the monarch will apply to him.

As the King, Charles is the only person in the UK permitted to travel without a passport, and therefore William will not need one to board a flight when he takes on the role.

However, Kate will still have to carry the travel document with her despite becoming the Queen Consort. This is because passports are issued in the name of the monarch.

It states: "His Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of His Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary."
