Prince William, Kate head to Boston: Everything to know about the couple's 1st US trip in 8 years

William and Kate will attend several events during their three days in Boston.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are coming to America.

Prince William and Kate will travel to Boston this week, marking their first visit to the United States since 2014, when they visited New York City and famously shook hands with Beyoncé and Jay-Z at a Brooklyn Nets game.

The royals will arrive in Boston on Wednesday, two days ahead of the second annual awards ceremony for the Earthshot Prize, an initiative William launched in 2019 to create solutions for environmental problems.

Their itinerary in the city includes everything from meeting Caroline Kennedy to visiting Harvard University.

The visit to Boston is William and Kate's first overseas trip since the death of William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September, and their first overseas trip since taking on the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales .

"TRHs are both excited for their first international trip since taking on their news roles as Prince and Princess of Wales," a Kensington Palace spokesperson told ABC News. "Both appreciate the history associated to the titles but understandably want to look to the future and pave their own paths."

Here is what to watch on each day of William and Kate's three-day visit.

Wednesday: Welcome celebration in Boston

William and Kate will be welcomed to Boston on Nov. 30 in a ceremony at City Hall attended by Kennedy and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who made history last year as the first woman and first person of color to be elected mayor.

In honor of the Earthshot Prize's focus on the environment, landmarks across the city, including City Hall, will be lit up in the color green.

Thursday: Visiting with high-risk youth

The royal couple will start their second day in Boston with a visit to Greentown Labs, a climate technology start-up incubator, in nearby Somerville, Massachusetts.

According to Kensington Palace, William and Kate will learn during the visit about "climate innovations" being incubated in Boston.

From there, the couple will travel just a few miles to Chelsea, where they will visit Roca, nonprofit organization that focuses on helping high-risk young people between the ages of 16 and 24, according to the palace.

William and Kate will meet with leaders of the organization and with participants in the young mothers' and young men's programs.

Friday's main event will be the 2022 Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony, which will be held Friday night at MGM Music Hall at Fenway, located close to Fenway Park.

The ceremony, which will air around the world on Dec. 4, will see five winners awarded $1 million grants each to scale their solutions to help repair planet Earth.

The ceremony will also include live performances by Billie Eilish, Annie Lennox, Ellie Goulding and Chloe.x.Halle, and will feature actors including Rami Malek, Catherine O’Hara, Shailene Woodley and Daniel Dae Kim as hosts and presenters.

Kate, who has made early childhood education a focus of her royal work, will meet with researchers at The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University.

William plans to tour the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum along with Caroline Kennedy.

William has said that President John F. Kennedy's "moonshot" challenge in 1962 to land a man on the moon within 10 years was the inspiration behind his Earthshot Prize, which has a goal to find solutions to repair the planet within the next 10 years.

The John F. Kennedy Foundation partnered with Earthshot Prize to bring this year's awards ceremony to Boston, according to the organization .

How Will Prince George's Life Change When Prince William Is King?

Prince William with baby George

Though we were all bracing ourselves for impact, the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 rocked the Commonwealth — and the international community — drastically. Her advanced age and declining health prepared the world somewhat for her passing, but Elizabeth's role as a fixture on the global stage could not be replaced. Nevertheless, her son — Prince Charles of Wales — became King Charles III after decades of waiting to assume the throne, and a new era for the royals began.

Shortly after he ascended, Charles named Prince William and Catherine, then-Duchess of Cambridge, the new Prince and Princess of Wales. Not only did William become the direct heir to the throne immediately following his grandmother's passing, but his role as the Prince of Wales will set him up to assume the crown when his father dies. The line of royal succession can be a bit confusing, but that's the direct heir in a nutshell.

Though William has a younger brother, Prince Harry, his children actually come in line before his brother. When William eventually assumes the throne in the coming years, his son Prince George will have a much more heightened role within the family. Royal rules, succession, and protocol can be confusing, so we're breaking it all down.

Prince George will become the direct heir to the throne

If you find the royal line of succession confusing, you're not alone. The rule of thumb is to follow the firstborn prince and his sons, but let's break it down. When Queen Elizabeth was on the throne, Prince Charles was the direct heir. When he welcomed Prince William and Prince Harry, Charles' sons circumvented his siblings — Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, and Princess Anne — in the process. Going back a few decades, Charles and Anne were heirs one and two for some time until their younger brothers were born. Because she was a woman, Anne's position in the line of succession started to drop and has continued to drop as her brothers — both younger and older — have had children.

Now that Charles is king, William is the direct heir to the throne . William's firstborn son, Prince George, is second in line, followed by his siblings. When William ascends the throne, George will become the direct heir like his father is now. Here's where things have changed, however. In 2013, the Succession to the Crown Act was passed, meaning that George's sister, Princess Charlotte, will not experience what Anne did and drop in the line given her gender (via The Royal Family ). Prince Louis, her young brother, is behind her in line and will stay there. They will both drop in closeness to the crown when George has children of his own.

Prince George will likely adopt the Prince of Wales title

In case you're new here, titles in the royal family are a big deal. Not only do they mark specific designations, but some titles hold more weight than others. For example, the Duke of Edinburgh title is perhaps one of the most respected and sought-after within the family. Famously held by Prince Philip, the title was said to go to Prince Edward after his father's passing. However, King Charles is rumored to be giving the title to Princess Charlotte much to his brother's chagrin (via People ). As you can see, titles come with a certain amount of family politics.

When Charles took the throne, he notably bestowed the Prince and Princess of Wales titles on Prince William and Princess Catherine, fulfilling a rather full circle moment given that the princess designation has not been used publicly since Princess Diana's passing. As such, when William takes the throne, it's likely that Prince George will be given the Prince of Wales title as well. As royal expert Marlene Koenig explained, George is currently Prince George of Wales, given his father's designation, but he is almost guaranteed to take on the title himself one day (via PureWow ). George will likely assume the title and role of the Duke of Cornwall too, and that's a whole other issue we'll get into later.

Despite his father having the Duke of Cambridge designation, Prince George likely won't adopt it

We have a little bit more to break down when it comes to titles. When Prince William and then-Kate Middleton got married, Queen Elizabeth bestowed upon them the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge titles much like royal couples before them. Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones became the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Camilla Parker Bowles became the Duchess of Cornwall, and so on. However, when William ascends to the throne after his father's death or abdication — whichever comes first — his Duke of Cambridge title that he still holds as of publication will likely not be passed on to Prince George (via Showbiz CheatSheet ).

But why? As it turns out, the Duke of Cambridge title has a rich history that is — as you may have guessed — a little sordid. The title was originally given to King George III's son, Prince Adolphus, all the way back in 1801 (via Royal Central ). After his death in 1850, it was given to his son, Prince George (a different Prince George, obviously). He, meanwhile, could not pass the title onto his three sons as he violated the Royal Marriages Act of 1772. When George passed in 1904, the title essentially became defunct and was only bestowed again onto William and Catherine upon their marriage in 2011.

Prince George's training as a monarch-in-waiting will kick up a notch

Time will tell how old Prince George will be when his father, Prince William, assumes the throne. Prince Charles was well into his 70s when he became king upon Queen Elizabeth's passing, so it's likely that we'll see William assume the throne perhaps in the next decade or two — meaning that George will be in his teens or early 20s when he becomes the direct heir. George's royal training will surely ramp up when Charles' reign starts to wind down and his father takes over. However, as royal correspondent Roya Nikkah explained, George's training as a young member of the family has already started to ramp up (via E! News ).

As for what George knows about his future as a direct heir and likely king of Great Britain, a source explained that William and Princess Catherine have done their best to talk to their son about the expectations placed on him. "George knows there's something special about him and that one day he'll be the future King of England," an insider noted (via E! News ).

Still, William is determined to maintain normalcy in his son's life for as long as possible, telling GQ that happiness and stability guide him as a parent. "I want George to grow up in a real, living environment, I don't want him growing up behind palace walls, he has to be out there," William said.

Prince George will surely take on a more public role in the monarchy

Depending on how old Prince George is when Prince William assumes the throne, the public will have likely seen different aspects of his life already unfold. When William was a child, the world watched him grow up, leave for school, attend the University of St Andrews, fall in love, get married, and so on. Though George may be in his teens or early 20s when his father takes the crown, it's assumed — given how things have transpired in the past — that the public will already know George quite well. However, he should expect his life to become far more transparent with the general public, media, and the international community at large when William becomes king.

Commenting on George's life at present, royal editor Richard Palmer noted that George and his sister, Princess Charlotte, will start becoming fixtures on the royal circuit now that King Charles is on the throne (via Express ). The kids are a little bit older, have been seen at major royal events, and apart from little Prince Louis, they're likely to be more visible as time passes. "We'll increasingly see George and Charlotte at state events, official events, being very gradually introduced to the life that awaits them," Palmer explained (via Express). The likelihood of George's public life increasing only becomes more guaranteed with time.

Prince George's position as heir will not change in the wake of a disaster

To say that Queen Elizabeth steered a rather dramatic ship is a bit of an understatement. Her father became king due to her uncle's controversial abdication, her sister became the first royal in decades to divorce, three of her four children divorced their spouses, and her husband was the subject of infidelity whispers throughout their marriage. Despite it all, she kept it firmly together, ensuring that such disasters would not deter her dedication to the crown or the stability of the monarchy. As we shift our focus to this current batch of royals, professor Robert Hazell — who teaches government and constitution courses at the University College London — explained that even in the wake of extreme disaster, Prince George will still become king within his lifetime (via  Insider ).

"When William becomes king, Kate will become queen. There is nothing to prevent William becoming king, other than his own premature death," Hazell explained (via Insider ), noting the line of succession and George's eventual position as the direct heir to the throne. "If William were to die before Charles, then on the death of Charles, Prince George would become king," Hazell concluded. So there you have it! Even if William were to suddenly pass away, George would still become king following Charles' death or abdication. His future, as displayed, is set — or is it?

Prince George could have the option to pursue a different life if he so desires

It seems the conversation surrounding the royal family comes down to one question: What happens if they don't want to be a royal? Prince Harry has just about answered this question, stepping back from his role and moving to California with Meghan Markle. But Harry is quite a ways from the throne, so he had much less to lose, right? But what happens if Prince George — who will one day be the direct heir — wants to have a normal life? Well, George is actually well within his right to leave royal life behind if he so desires (via Express ).

Though very rare, abdication within the British royal family does happen. When George goes through the ranks of the firm and eventually becomes the direct heir, he will likely be of an age where he can make his own decisions about his future. If he does choose to step aside and renounce his place in the line of succession, the focus will then be shifted to his younger sister, Princess Charlotte. As aforementioned, the Succession to the Crown Act in 2013 (via The Royal Family ) allowed Charlotte to maintain her spot in line even after her younger brother, Prince Louis, was born (a right not granted to Princess Anne, who is increasingly distanced from the throne). If both George and Charlotte decide not to have a future within the monarchy, Louis is next up.

Prince George and his siblings could be at odds after their father assumes the throne

As we've previously discussed, titles are a big deal in the royal family. In a way, they not only designate a member for public distinction, but they create a sort of unspoken hierarchy within the firm (not that they needed much help in establishing who's in control). As aforementioned, Prince George will likely inherit a number of titles when his father becomes king, but this might put him at odds with his sister, Princess Charlotte. As detailed by Express , Charlotte may have all her royal titles stripped when Prince William assumes the throne, certainly putting her and George in an awkward territory with one another.

But why would such a thing happen? Express details that in the case of succession, Charlotte could lose her titles when she is grown. Her father could bestow a new title on her when he becomes king, but that too comes with another level of complication. Typically, the only daughter of a reigning monarch is given the title of Princess Royal, but that designation currently belongs to Princess Anne. It will only be when Anne passes herself that the title will become up for grabs, and even then it'll be up to William to give his daughter such a distinction. George, as we've discussed, will likely be Prince of Wales, but as Express detailed, his sister might be known as "Charlotte of nothing."

Prince George will likely inherit millions of dollars when William becomes king

Though he was largely known as the Prince of Wales, King Charles was also the Duke of Cornwall before he took the throne. When he passed the Prince of Wales title to Prince William, he also bestowed his son with the Cornwall distinction — this gets a little more complicated, as the Duke of Cornwall inherits and oversees the Duchy of Cornwall, a huge asset that provides the title holder with quite a packed bank account.

As noted by Architectural Digest , the Duchy of Cornwall is made up of an estate that's about 128,000 acres and was created all the way back in 1337 for the direct heir to the British throne. The duchy is now worth more than one billion dollars, giving the title holder, i.e. William, a yearly income of about $24 million.

The duchy itself is comprised of a forest, multiple parks, islands, farmland, and a prison — if you can believe it. There are a number of vacation properties on the land and a fully operating farm that's been in business since the mid-1980s. With all of this land and income, it's no wonder that the duchy is worth so much money. As we can expect with the Prince of Wales title, the Duke of Cornwall — and by proxy, the duchy itself — will likely be passed down to Prince George when his father takes the crown.

The heir's primary role will be supporting his father, no matter what

Prince Harry set a rather unexpected precedent when he stepped back from his role, and while Prince George could give up his spot in the royal family for a more normal life, it would be surprising. The Prince of Wales' role, as detailed by its official website, is to support the monarch — it's a position King Charles was in for decades, it's the role that Prince William finds himself in, and it's the title that George will likely inherit.

So, did Harry's distance from the crown allow him to make such a decision? Possibly. His great-uncle abdicated the throne so he could marry an American divorcee, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. But given William's dedication to the crown and the ways in which George is already becoming more prevalent, it would be incredibly surprising if he didn't assume the Prince of Wales role in the future and fulfilled it to a tee.

As the Prince of Wales' website notes, the direct heir to the throne not only supports the monarch domestically but often represents them internationally as well. In the short period of time that William has been the Prince of Wales, he has already traveled to the United States on behalf of the crown (via CNN ), and it's likely he will continue to have a strong presence. George will be expected to do the same.

This royal rule about travel will continue to be upheld, with a new twist

Any royal watcher knows that there are a number of rules and protocols that members of the family have to adhere to. Said rules can apply to wardrobe choices, food, how to greet one another, and more, but one of the more important royal protocols extends to travel for a rather macabre reason. As noted by The Sun , no two heirs to the British throne are permitted to travel with each other in case of — as you may have guessed — an awful tragedy that results in one or both being killed. It's a rather morose protocol, but it's one that Prince William and Prince George already adhere to.

Now that King Charles is the reigning monarch of Britain, he and William cannot travel together, William and George cannot travel together, and when George eventually becomes the direct heir to the throne and has children of his own one day, his firstborn child will not be able to travel with him. This separation may seem extreme, but putting both the monarch and the direct heir at risk certainly does not seem worth it. Though George did travel with his parents as a baby and young child, that exception no longer applies.

Prince George will likely move after his father becomes king

To say that the royals have a wide variety of housing options is a bit of an understatement. We all know Buckingham Palace as the central London location for the family, but there's Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace, Adelaide Cottage, Clarence House, Balmoral — the list goes on and on. In a surprising move in 2022, Prince William and Catherine, then-Duchess of Cambridge moved from Kensington to Windsor to be closer to Queen Elizabeth (via CBS News ). The move allowed their children to have more privacy than life at Kensington allowed, and although Elizabeth passed shortly afterward, the family is settling in nicely. That's not to say they'll stay there forever, though. When William eventually takes the throne, it's likely that he and Catherine will move once more — depending on their ages, their three children may come with them or move into separate lodgings within the family's impressive estate portfolio.

There isn't a huge precedent when it comes to where the Prince of Wales lives, so when Prince George eventually assumes the role, he will certainly be able to choose where he resides. As noted by Metro , King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, lived at Clarence House while he was the Prince of Wales, with titleholder William now living at Windsor. A move is certainly in the cards — where George will eventually settle remains to be seen.

The King and Queen and Prince and Princess of Wales disembarking from planes

The King  will visit Australia this year as the royals return to a busy schedule of overseas travel.

After a year of transition, with the monarch and his heir the Prince of Wales getting to grips with their new roles, their diary will return to a more regular pace, complete with major spring and autumn tours.

While His Majesty already has three state visits under his belt, he has yet to see any of his 14 overseas realms as monarch.

But a trip to Samoa for October's Commonwealth's Heads of Government Meeting means he and the Queen will be able to stop off in Australia and possibly New Zealand either en route or on the way back.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the visit at the start of the year, with a spokesman saying he "enjoys a warm relationship with the King and looks forward to welcoming His Majesty to Australia later this year".

DON'T MISS

It will be the first trip Down Under by a reigning monarch since 2011, when Elizabeth II visited for the last time. With the republican movement growing, it will be a key moment for the King to cement his relationship with the Australian people, six years after his last visit. He and the Queen – then the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall – opened the Commonwealth Games in Queensland in 2018.

Ahead of that trip, Their Majesties are also expected to return to Canada in the spring for the first time since the accession. In 2022, they travelled more than 2,000 miles from St John's in Newfoundland and Labrador to the capital Ottawa, then on to Yellowknife and Dettah in the Northwest Territories. This will be His Majesty’s 20th visit to Canada and the sixth for the Queen.

However, the first royal overseas visit of 2024 began this week, with the Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence undertaking a three-day visit to Sri Lanka to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations with the UK.

Princess Anne wears garland of flowers in Jaffna

The Prince and Princess of Wales are also preparing for their first official overseas visits – again at the request of the Government – since taking on their new roles.

Talks are under way about Prince William and Kate possibly travelling to Italy in the spring, hot on the heels of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s meeting with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, in Rome last month. This would be the Prince and Princess's first official visit to Italy, although as a student the then Kate Middleton spent three months studying art history in Florence during her gap year, which could mean a return to the Tuscan city.

In the past 12 months, the Prince has made journeys to New York, Singapore, Poland and Kuwait, while Kate joined him for the royal wedding of Crown Prince Al Hussein of Jordan to Saudi architect Rajwa Al Saif last June.

Hannah Waddingham and Prince William attend the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony in Singapore

Both travelled separately to France to support England and Wales during their Rugby World Cup ties, too. This will be the first major trip for the couple since their tour of the Caribbean in March 2022, where they encountered scattered anti-monarchy protests. There will also be another glittering Earthshot Prize ceremony, with the continents of Africa and South America lined up as potential  hosts. The long-haul trip could tie into a tour for them.

The Prince and Princess don't always fly by royal plane

Also this summer, Princess Anne, president of the British Olympic Association and a member of the International Olympic Committee, is likely to attend the Paris Games, while other members of the royal family could also head across the Channel to support Team GB.

Two years after Princess Charlotte joined her parents at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, could she and her brothers Prince George and Prince Louis be in the French capital for more sporting fun?

Why William won't have to follow this travel rule when he becomes King - but Kate will

Prince William Kate Middleton flying

The royals have their own unique set of rules and traditions when flying. Did you know that the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton's dresses get their own seats on a plane? Or that the late Queen Elizabeth II always carried very specific teabags with her when she travelled? And there's also the little known fact that the senior royals reportedly carry bags of their own blood type .

Prince William and Kate Middleton are also known to break the royal rules when going abroad . The couple often fly with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, which is against royal protocol as two heirs must not travel together in order to protect the royal lineage.

However, when William becomes King there will be one major difference in the way he travels compared to his wife - and there's a rule that cannot be broken.

Currently, when the the Wales' go overseas they must adhere to passport checks and go through immigration. But when William takes the throne, he will no longer have to do this. Instead, the rules that now apply to the monarch will apply to him.

As the King, Charles is the only person in the UK permitted to travel without a passport, and therefore William will not need one to board a flight when he takes on the role.

However, Kate will still have to carry the travel document with her despite becoming the Queen Consort. This is because passports are issued in the name of the monarch.

It states: "His Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of His Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary."

Why did Prince William travel to Kuwait instead of King Charles?

As a result, William, 41, knows he must tread carefully when addressing the issue with his father.

“William’s strategy is to convince Charles he wants to take on Princess Anne’s title as the hardest-working royal and it appears his plan is working, hence the last-minute decision for him to go to Kuwait.”

Charles, 75, has sidestepped some official royal duties lately.

Charles – and Camilla – were noticeably absent from the Princess of Wales’ Together at Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey on December 8.

In fact, the King’s only high-profile official engagement in the lead-up to Christmas was his surprise visit to the Royal Courts of Justice in London on December 14.

His incredibly busy year was captured in the BBC documentary Charles III: The Coronation Year which aired in the UK on Boxing Day.

“Charles is tired and these past few years, what with losing his mother, Queen Elizabeth, and the ongoing dramas with the Duke of Sussex, have been brutal,” the source tells New Idea .

“He spent his entire life preparing to become King, but it’s come to him so late in life.”

William is not the only one who has concerns. For some months now, royal watchers have noticed that Charles appears to be somewhat swamped and can seem tetchy.

“Charles is not as nimble nor energetic as he once was,” our source reveals.

“It’s also been noticed how pale he sometimes looks.”

Our source adds William will have used the Christmas break at Sandringham to talk his beloved ‘Pa’ about slowing down – just a little.

“Both William and the Princess of Wales took it upon themselves to make sure Charles had a decent rest over Christmas. William wants Charles to stop thinking he’s invincible and to start taking his health even more seriously than he has done in the past.”

Our source adds that William wants Charles to have a “happier second year as King than he did as his first”.

Clearly, some of William’s concerns have been heeded by Charles. In addition to him relinquishing some of his royal duties, he’s also appointed a new doctor to lead his personal medical team.

“The King knows his workload is more suited to someone with Willliam’s stamina,” reveals our source. “Expect to see a lot more of the Prince of Wales in the hot seat in 2024.”

FLYING VISIT

William travelled to Kuwait with UK foreign secretary David Cameron to pay respects to Emir Sheikh Nawaf after his death, aged 86.

The British monarchy has long-standing ties with the Middle Eastern nation, so it was imperative that a senior royal made the trip.

OFFICIAL DUTY

William also represented Charles at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth on December 14 to inspect the cadet graduation ceremony. Both Charles and William attended the naval training facility. “It’s a great honour for me to be here,” William said.

Prince William Moves Into the Spotlight as Heir to the Throne

Many royal watchers and historians are looking to William and his wife, Catherine, who rank high in popularity polls, as the long-term future of the British monarchy.

Follow the latest news on Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral .

LONDON — He’s been famous since Day 1, a tabloid staple as the firstborn child of Prince Charles and the glamorous young Princess Diana.

Since then, Prince William has lived his life in public. The world watched as he carried a tiny thermos on his first day at school , somberly walked behind his mother’s coffin at 15, learned to fly in the Royal Air Force , married Kate Middleton in a lavish royal wedding and became a father of three.

Now, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, William, 40, is the Prince of Wales and the heir to the British throne.

His has been a life lived largely without the controversy, and occasional scandals, that have engulfed his relatives; as a result, William has ranked high in popularity polls about the royal family.

Indeed, many royal watchers and historians look to the prince and his wife as the real future of the British monarchy, thanks in part to the family’s own careful image construction around the pair, casting them as a symbol of the next generation.

“This is a very transitional monarchy,” Arianne Chernock, a professor of history at Boston University and an expert on the modern British monarchy, said of the new reign of King Charles III, who is 73. “I think we’re going to have to wait honestly until William and Kate, until we see more significant updating. But always, of course, also attuned to and mindful of tradition.”

In the days since his grandmother’s death, William has exhibited a respect for royal tradition as well as an instinct for positive imagery. Last Saturday, he issued a personal statement honoring his grandmother, emphasizing not only their personal relationship but also the impact she had on shaping his and Kate’s view of what the monarchy should be. He also took a very visible walk that day with his brother Harry and Harry’s wife, Meghan, projecting a sense of comity between two siblings whose relationship has been tense since last year.

Laura Clancy, a lecturer at Lancaster University and the author of the book “Running the Family Firm: How the Monarchy Manages Its Image and Our Money,” said there had been a clear effort by the palace to put forth the image of William and Kate as relatable, with a focus on their family life.

“I think you get an image that is more intimate probably than what Charles offers,” Dr. Clancy said. “That kind of staging of that very nuclear family, you can still see that with Kate and the children and him as this hands-on dad.”

“We don’t really know what their personalities are like — we don’t know that much about Kate at all really, or William,” Dr. Clancy added. “But you think you do, and that’s important.”

In one online survey from the British polling company YouGov, William ranked as the third most popular royal, with a 66 percent approval rating; he trailed only the queen, who had 75 percent popularity before her death, and his wife Kate, with 68 percent. Charles rated seventh , with 42 percent.

William and Kate’s popularity comes as a package deal, driven in part by a carefully curated social media presence that seems to offer a behind-the-scenes look at their life.

On their highly choreographed joint Instagram account , many of the photos focus on their family life, some of them taken by Kate, who is interested in photography.

Pat Sellar, 71, Mary Williams, 73, and her husband Nigel Williams, 73, who joined the crowds laying flowers in Green Park this week, said they admired the royals as they felt the entire family had a real sense of service. “The queen is gone, but I am glad to see that being carried through to the younger generation with William and Kate,” Ms. Sellar said.

That popularity at one point extended to the issue of succession. In a May survey, YouGov asked Britons who should become king after the death of Elizabeth; about 37 percent said it should be William, while 34 percent believed it should be his father, Charles.

Many experts say William is unlikely to fundamentally shift the monarchy when his time on the throne comes.

“One thing the royals are really good at is always changing, so that they can stay the same, so they can maintain what they’ve got,” Dr. Clancy said. “I think William is the next generation of that.”

Inheriting his father’s titles — the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cornwall — isn’t just symbolic. It will also mean inheriting the Duchy of Cornwall, which Charles turned into a lucrative business empire worth an estimated £1 billion, or $1.17 billion.

He will also likely inherit some of the causes that Charles has championed, including the fight against climate change, which the king will no longer be able to advocate for in his role as head of state.

William has already begun to dedicate time to the issue — the prince and his royal foundation launched the Earthshot Prize, which will present five £1 million awards to creators of climate-change solutions each year for a decade.

Charles himself hinted at William’s evolving role in his maiden speech to the nation last week, offering clues to how the royal family is thinking of William’s role.

Charles said that as his own role changed, it would be impossible “to give so much of my time and energies to the charities and issues for which I care so deeply,” but he added, “I know this important work will go on in the trusted hands of others.”

“I took this to be a message directed squarely at William and Kate,” Dr. Chernock said. There may be some room for evolution in this area, she added: “William and Kate can use this period before they become king and queen to engage in some of the work of modernizing.”

She expects the pair to also take on issues that resonate with the public, including “addressing the challenges within the royal family” and “perhaps even offering more public apologies for British slavery and imperialism — along the lines of what Charles started to do last year in Barbados.”

Both may prove to be challenging. Prince Andrew has mostly been excluded from royal life after accusations of sexual assault. William and Kate had a turbulent royal tour in the Caribbean this spring, and while they were greeted warmly, the tour was riddled with missteps and criticized as out of touch.

The highly scrutinized and meticulously scripted public appearances around Elizabeth’s funeral also offer an opportunity for the family to present a mending of divisions between William and Harry.

Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal life in early 2020 and relocated to the United States. In a sensational interview with Oprah in 2021, they detailed how royal life left Meghan suicidal and revealed how a family member had expressed concerns about how dark the color of their baby’s skin would be.

Days later, asked by a reporter whether the royal family was racist, Prince William said it was “very much not a racist family,” the only direct comment he has made on that issue.

The images of the brothers greeting mourners alongside their wives outside Windsor Castle last week harkened back to the days before the drama when the foursome had, for a short time, been portrayed collectively as the future of the royal family.

But the British press were quick to report that the apparent reconciliation was only about mourning their grandmother, and might not last.

King William Island

Follow the step of explorer roald amundsen, information about king william island.

The island (the 61st-largest island in the world and Canada's 15th-largest island) and the surrounding area was the region where the Erebus and Terror ended up.

It is now known the two ships became stranded in 1846 when frozen in the sea ice northwest of the island. After abandoning the two ships, most of the crew died from exposure and starvation as they attempted to walk south near the western coastline. Two of Franklin's men were buried at Hall Point on the island's south coast. It wasn't until June 29, 1981, that researchers finally had luck. A team led by Canadian archaeologist Owen Beattie, found 31 pieces of human bone fragments on the southern tip of the island, called Booth Point. On September 9, 2014 the Victoria Strait Expedition located the wreck of HMS Erebus. The HMS Terror, was found in 2016 in Terror Bay, off the south-west coast of King William Island.

The area also played an important for the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen on the expedition through the Northwest Passage, spending nearly two years with his ship on the SE coast at what is now known as Gjoa Haven. The island is separated from the Boothia Peninsula by the James Ross Strait to the northeast, and the Rae Strait to the east. To the west is the Victoria Strait and beyond it Victoria Island. Within the Simpson Strait, to the south of the island, then the Adelaide Peninsula, part of mainland Canada. Queen Maud Gulf lies to the southwest.

Interesting facts about King William Island

Rae Strait between King William Island and the Boothia peninsula, and named after John Rae, who discovered the potential of this stretch of water that was the last link in the NW passage.

John Rae, an Orkney man who joined the Hudson Bay company, is one of the greatest polar explorers. Compared to many explorers, often with navy connections, that explored with a ship as base, John Rae and similar explorers went native, living and learning from the Inuit. John Rae was also the person who discovered the fate of the Franklin expedition from the Inuit, people who knew he could trust, including their reports that some of the last men had resorted to cannibalism. John Rae came back with the news but was denounced by Victorian society for suggesting that Englishmen, of all people, would resort to cannibalism. Only now is John ae getting the credit he deserves, perhaps the greatest British polar explorer.

Beechey Island

Key historical site where Franklin spent his first winter before the Erebus and Terror vanished to the outside World.

Made very sombre with the graves of three of Franklin’s men, and others, plus later memorials. Situated on the very southwest corner of Devon Island, separated by Barrow Strait, it is at a key ‘crossroad’ in the northwest Passage and was the main base in the search for Franklin.

This remote location is a key destination for everyone that visits the NW passage, with the main focus on the location, rather than wildlife, but offshore can be good for Beluga.

Narwhal

Bellot Strait

Narrow strait separating Somerset Island to the north from Murchison Promontory of Boothia Peninsula to the south, the northernmost part of mainland America.

The 2km (1.2 mi) wide and 25 km (16 mi) strait connects the Gulf of Boothia, Prince Regent Inlet, and Brentford Bay to the east with Peel Sound and Franklin Strait to the west. It became a strait on ‘one’ of the NW passage routes. On a map of the Canadian Arctic, unless you look in detail, it is easy to assume the Boothia Peninsula and Somerset Island is one peninsula. In many ways, with Bellot Strait locked in ice much of the year, it is like the peninsula. Since it is so narrow, it can be a place to look for Narwhal, and, along the shore, Polar Bear, or even wolf.

QuarkExpeditions_ Canada Epic High Arctic

Cambridge Bay

Situated on the SE coast of Victoria Island (the 8th largest in the World), and the largest community on the Island. As well as the community focus there is the history of the area

The first Europeans to reach Cambridge Bay were overland explorers led by Thomas Simpson in 1839; searching for the Northwest Passage and crossing the sea ice to Cambridge Bay by foot. Another overland expedition was led by John Rae who reached Cambridge Bay in 1851. The first ship to reach the bay was HMS Enterprise under Richard Collinson who wintered there in 1852/53. Both Rae and Collinson were searching for Franklin's lost expedition.

Two Seabirds

Coburg Island

Between Ellesmere Island and Devon Island at the entrance to Jones Sound.

It is part of the Nirjutiqavvik National Wildlife Area and Cambridge Point, with spectacular cliffs that are an important location for breeding seabirds including black guillemot, black-legged kittiwake, glaucous gull, northern fulmar, and thick-billed murre. Offshore waters are also good for marine mammals.

croker bay

One of the deeper inlets into Devon Island, on the southeast side, but further west from Dundas Harbour. Great ship cruising with icebergs and the flat-topped mountain geology of this part of Devon Island.

Greenland and Arctic Canada

Dundas Harbour

First built in 1924 as a Canadian outpost on the southeast coast of Devon Island, with concern about sovereignty of this Arctic Archipelago. It was settled several times but finally abandoned with a ‘ghost town’ feel. Tundra is good to explore and to ship cruise the nearby inlet.

Ross Fort

Fort Ross is an abandoned former trading post on Somerset Island. First established in 1937 by the Hudson's Bay Company, it was only operational to 1948, as severe ice conditions in the surrounding waters made the site hard to reach and economically unviable.

It is interesting to visit a Hudson’s Bay Company hut and to contemplate the location. It is situated at the eastern end of Bellot Strait on a south-eastern peninsula of Somerset Island, a key location in the northwest Passage. Also good for a rage of high arctic species.

Gjoa Haven, Nunavut

Situated on the SE side of King William Island it is the location where the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his crew spent some time on his route through the Northwest Passage.

In October 1903 he put Gjøa into a natural harbour on the southeast coast of King William Island. He stayed there for nearly two years, learning from the local Netsilik Inuit, and the skills to live off the land and travel efficiently in the Arctic environment. This knowledge proved to be vital for Amundsen's later successful exploration to the South Pole. He also explored the Boothia Peninsula, searching for the exact location of the North Magnetic Pole. Today there is a community at Gjoa Haven and a popular landing for cruise ships. Permanent European-style settlement started in 1927, as a Hudson's Bay Company trading outpost. The settlement attracted the traditionally nomadic Inuit people as they adapted a more settled lifestyle. By 2016 the population was 1,324.

Grise Fjord

On Ellesmere Island (10th largest in the World) and the most northerly community in Canada. In Inuktitut it is called Aujuittuq—”the place that never thaws”.

It is the only ‘public’ community on Ellesmere Island, created in 1953 by the Canadian Government with a relocation of Inuit families from Inukjuak, Quebec. It is also one of the coldest inhabited places in the world, with an average yearly temperature of −16.5 °C (2.3 °F). There is an airport, but even today it can be a challenging place to land, or even get ashore by Zodiac from a ship.

Greenland and Baffin Bay

This long sound separates Somerset Island on the east from Prince of Wales Island on the west. To the north it opens onto Parry Channel. To the south, at the mouth the Bellot Strait, it merges with Franklin Strait.

Sir John Franklin passed through the strait in 1846, an unseasonably warm summer, since typically Peel Sound is frozen. The east side of Peel Sound was traced by James Clark Ross in 1849, searching for Franklin, and in 1858 Francis Leopold McClintock tried to penetrate it and was blocked by ice. Even today cruise ships attempting the NW passage prefer the Bellot Strait route compared to Peel Sound.

Looking west towards the island

Prince Leopold Island

This island is in a key location in Lancaster Sound at the junction of Prince Regent Inlet and Barrow Strait, off the northwest coast of Somerset Island. It has some really impressive and steep seabird cliffs that is one of the most important sites in the Canadian Arctic and a bird sanctuary.

Also good area to look for marine mammals and other Arctic wildlife.

Croker Bay, Nunavut, Canada

Radstock Bay

Situated close to the southwest corner of Devon Island with Viscount Melville Sound nearby.

Great ship cruising in a location close to where Lancaster Sound splits into a myriad of channels that made the exploration of the northwest passage so challenging.

Kayaking near Disko Island

Resolute & Cornwallis Island

A large island (96th in the world, 21st in Canada) at key location with Devon Island to the east, Bathurst Island to the west, and Somerset Island further to the South, across the main passage, with various smaller islands nearby.

Cornwallis Island is the location of Resolute, one of the most northerly settlements in Canada, certainly the most northern ‘town’. The airport is used as a hub to join cruise ships, though still a challenge, with a beach landing and a Zodiac cruise to get to and from the ship, with luggage!

King Charles Is Opening New Doors to Royal Palaces, Including Family's Summer Retreat, to Public for First Time

Visitors will be able to tour Balmoral Castle, where Queen Elizabeth died, and new nooks of Buckingham Palace, including the room that leads out to the iconic balcony

Janine Henni is a Royals Staff Writer for PEOPLE Digital, covering modern monarchies and the world's most famous families. Like Queen Elizabeth, she loves horses and a great tiara moment.

Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace are welcoming visitors in new ways.

It was revealed this week that both royal residences will welcome visitors into previously unseen spaces through ticketed tours this summer. In fact, Balmoral Castle in Scotland is opening "for the first time since the castle was completed in 1855," its website says.

Balmoral is famed as the royal family's cherished summer sanctuary in the Scottish Highlands, but it also holds sad memories for the group. Prince William  and  Prince Harry were spending time there in August 1997 when their mother, Princess Diana , tragically died in a car crash in Paris.

Queen Elizabeth , who her granddaughter  Princess Eugenie  once said was "most happy" at Balmoral, died there in 2022. Sources told PEOPLE at the time it was fitting she spend her last hours there because it was such a special place for her and her family — and now, the public can step into the castle in Aberdeenshire for themselves.

Keystone/Hulton Archive/Getty

The Castle Internal Guided Tours experience is touted as a "historical journey" through "several of the beautiful rooms," comprised of a private guide that talks visitors through its history from acquisition by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1845 to a peek at how King Charles , Queen Camilla and other royal family members continue to use the space today.

The royal family has previously permitted tours at Balmoral around the grounds and gardens, but access inside the castle was limited to the ballroom, making the Castle Internal Guided Tours the most intimate yet.

The tours are set to run from July 1 to August 4, capped at 10 people per session. The general guided excursion currently costs about $126 a person, while tickets with afternoon tea are about $189 — and are open to adults only.

Andrew Milligan/PA Images via Getty

While many of the internal Balmoral Castle tours have already sold out, there’s still plenty of availability for the Balmoral General Admission, featuring a trove of artwork by King Charles plus some royal fashion. The Ballroom promises "His Majesty The King's watercolor collection depicting scenery at Balmoral, Highgrove and Sandringham" and a "collection of outfits worn by Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla, the late Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother."

While Buckingham Palace has been a popular stop for royal watchers since 1993 when Queen Elizabeth opened its gates as a fundraiser after a devastating fire ripped through Windsor Castle in 1992, new areas of the famous London residence will be available to tour for the first time this year.

The East Wing of Buckingham Palace, where the King filmed his Christmas broadcast in December 2023, will be toured for the first time come summer. On April 3, the Royal Collection Trust announced that the iconic palace will open the wing via the Principal Floor following five years of restorative work.

Jonathan Brady - WPA Pool /Getty

The East Wing includes the front façade and iconic palace balcony, "where the monarch and members of the royal family have gathered for public appearances during special occasions or historic moments since 1851," including royal weddings, coronations and Trooping the Colour, the annual celebration of the monarch's birthday.

The Royal Collection Trust said that the royal family still uses the wing today for official meetings and events.

Royal watchers can save the date for East Wing Highlights Tours held daily in July and August starting July 15, booked in addition to standard admission to the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace.

The palace will be open seven days a week in July and August for the first time since 2019 before scaling back to five days a week in September.

While Buckingham Palace is synonymous with the British royals and serves as the hub of the monarchy’s operations, King Charles and Queen Camilla don’t actually live there! The palace is in the middle of a $460 million renovation reportedly not due to be complete until 2027 .

Stuart C. Wilson/Getty

As King Charles, 75, invites the public into new nooks for the first time this summer, The Times cited royal biographer Robert Hardman’s prediction that the King would open up Balmoral during his reign.

"Balmoral is private property. However, it needs public footfall not just to help pay the bills but to bring benefits to the wider community and to remain in step with other stately homes," the outlet quoted Hardman as writing in Charles III. New King. New Court. The Inside Story 2024 , which was published under the title The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy in the U.S. in January.
