Background on the Burgundy Wine Region

Burgundy is such a legendary wine region that it’s home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites . The Côte de Nuits , one of the most well-known sub-regions in Burgundy, is a paradise for those seeking an intimate experience with the world of fine wines. Opting for a private tour here lets you experience the heart of Burgundy. It’s home to many of the region’s grand cru estates, where you can enjoy exceptional red wines straight from ancient wine cellars. It’s particularly celebrated for its Pinot Noir-based wines and prestigious wine estates, many of which produce wines that have aging potential far beyond those based in new world wine regions.

Aside from Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune stands out as another noteworthy wine destination known for its exquisite white wine, primarily crafted from Chardonnay grapes. Here, you can participate in private wine tours with the wine producers themselves. You’ll be guided through both large houses and family-run domains, uncovering the secrets of wine production that have been honed over centuries. Each wine estate in the Burgundy region is a story in itself, often tied to the rich history of the area, including the tumultuous times of the French Revolution and the evolution of viticulture through the ages. The best ways for wine lovers to experience the Burgundy include structured day trips or self-guided tours along the wine route. Whether it’s the Golden Slope of the Côte d’Or or the heart of Chablis, each area presents a unique story of grape varieties, wine production, and local traditions.

Burgundy is not just about tasting amazing wines; it’s about soaking up the culture and history of the area. From medieval villages, the historic Clos de Vougeot Castle, to the Côte Chalonnaise, every stop is a discovery. The region’s culinary delights, like the famous Beef Bourguignon, perfectly complement bottles of Pinot Noir. Venture past the stone walls of ancient domains, and into the heart of local life, enriched with fine wines, great food, and a treasure trove of history.

I waited 50 years to travel to France. I imagined every detail to make my dream trip come true. I needed help in making the dream a reality.

From my first phone call to IntoThe Vineyard and meeting Morgan, to actually sitting in a vineyard in Provence sipping a chardonnay, they held my hand and planned each beautiful step. They listened to me and tailored exactly the trip I wanted. I chose to do it as a solo trip but never felt alone. The accommodations, drivers, and details all made for a flawless first-time international trip.

Madison Dreith and her team did an outstanding job of arranging a memorable visit to the Bordeaux region of France, as well as a one-day "foodie" tour of Paris. It was so easy to enjoy the trip when we had drivers who knew the area to take us to the different wineries. The restaurants selected for us to have our lunches were outstanding as well. Into the Vinyard allowed us to fully enjoy our time in Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Place de Palais

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour in Bordeaux. This tour was in August so we know it was a challenge. But their delivery was World Class. The service people lined up by Into the Vineyard were engaging, thoughtful and respectful. The two hotels, although small both in number of rooms and room size, were quaint. Their breakfasts and afternoon beverage arrangements were a nice touch. The specific wine tours had much more of an educational tone to them as compared with other wine tours we experienced previously. A unique aspect of the week was a side boat trip in Archachon. It was an interesting break from the wine tours and the boat captain was incredibly humorous. Recommend this tour and this tour company highly!

Booked us an amazing trip to Champagne and Corsica. We were so impressed by the quality of the hotels they recommended and the guides they paired us up with. Not only did they arrange fantastic tours of well-known wineries but also small independent ones. Super professional and their attention to detail was great. Corsica was suggested to us and was everything we wanted and more!

We just had an amazing trip to France/Spain to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. I want to thank Into the Vineyard as they picked wonderful spots for us to stay along with some amazing adventures.

Colin heard our desires and was able to point us in the right direction so that we could enjoy the experience without being constantly on the move. The part I really appreciated was that we wanted wine activities, primarily in Bordeaux, but had enough experience to plan non-wine day tours for us in the other cities, such as a Tapas tour and a cheese/barkery/chocolate tour.

Tailored and affordable wine tours where precision meets high standards.

Burgundy Wine Tour

Burgundy: the ultimate destination for wine lovers and gourmet tours in france.

EXPLORE ALL OUR EXPLORE OUR PRIVATE WINE TOURS IN FRANCE

Overview of Burgundy Wine Tour

Burgundy’s bucolic and scenic wine country, whose terroir and “climats” were recently awarded UNESCO heritage status, is the ultimate destination for fine wine lovers and gourmets seeking an unforgettable culinary tour in France. Burgundy is the home of the world’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with legendary wines from Meursault and Vosne-Romanée gracing many a wine collector’s cellar. Although vines first arrived in Burgundy from Greece via Marseille around 600 BC, the Cistercian and Benedictine monks painstakingly cultivated the region’s inaugural vineyards. These monastic viticulturists were instrumental in delineating many of today’s vineyard boundaries and establishing the stunning Clos de Vougeot. This historic estate will be a highlight of your curated tour.

You will journey through the legendary vineyards of the Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, and Chablis, where you’ll be treated to exclusive tours and VIP tastings beyond the ordinary. Your chauffeur will manage every detail of your travel itinerary, ensuring your safety and the optimal pacing to enrich your experience. This allows you to unwind, take in the magnificent vistas along the route, and savor every moment of your Burgundy adventure.

With Cella Tours, the culinary experience takes center stage, transforming your journey into an unforgettable gastronomic odyssey. Relish the tender Charolais beef, a regional gem that reaches its zenith of flavor in a classic Boeuf Bourguignon, especially when savored alongside a glass of the region’s signature, earthy Burgundy red wine. Discover the gastronomic magic that happens when Coq au Vin, rich and aromatic, meets a well-structured and nuanced Pinot Noir. Your palate will thank you. What journey through Burgundy’s gastronomic landscape would be complete without sampling its iconic cheeses? Sample the creamy, pungent Époisses de Bourgogne, the subtly nuanced Abbaye de Citeaux, and the indulgently rich Délice de Bourgogne, each an ambassador of the region’s dairy excellence.

As you journey through Burgundy’s culinary and viticultural wonders, know that your comfort is our priority. The accommodations for this tour have been meticulously handpicked to offer more than mere five-star ratings. We prioritize establishments renowned for their exceptional service, attentive staff, and world-class gastronomy. Each property is strategically located to maximize your comfort and accessibility to key attractions, ensuring that every moment of your stay is as luxurious as it is convenient.

Are you ready to discover more? If you’re a couple or a small group of friends seeking the ultimate Burgundian adventure, don’t hesitate. Contact us today to plan your bespoke food and wine tour, meticulously personalized to match your unique tastes and requirements.

Picturesque Beaune

Welcome to Burgundy, Bienvenue

  • 5* Elegant, small hotel in historic Beaune
  • Dinner with wines
  • Chauffeured Mercedes

This morning, you will start your tour in Beaune . Arrive by train, or our chauffeur can collect you and drive you to your 5-star Hotel Le Cep . After check in, take some time to relax and get settled in. You will find your welcome pack in your room, including your personalized keepsake itinerary and a hand-selected bottle of wine. Enjoy a treatment at the onsite Spa Marie de Bourgogne; we highly recommend the “Balneotherapy,” 130 water jets of variable intensity designed to simulate blood circulation, just the thing after a long journey. Welcome to Burgundy! This afternoon, you will kick off the wine tour with a fun private wine masterclass at the L’ École des Vins de Bourgogne .

Enjoy an introduction to the complexities and history of Burgundy’s wine. After the French Revolution in 1789, the vineyards were seized from the church and aristocracy. They were then broken up into smaller holdings and further divided into smaller parcels due to new inheritance laws. A network of Négociants (brokers) emerged, and they became specialized in selling wine from tiny, very localized areas. They are still an essential part of the Burgundy wine business today. Your wine expert will guide you through Burgundy’s integrities, providing you with a solid base for the upcoming region tour.

After an entertaining and insightful tasting, relax at your hotel or walk through the beautiful Beaune. Enclosed by a 13th-century wall, Vieux Beaune is a visual treat, with quaint narrow streets, timber façades, and effortlessly charming bakeries, wine bars, and pâtisseries.

Your welcome dinner tonight is at the Michelin-starred Le Benaton . Enjoy creative cuisine and a selection of local wines, with over 400 wines on their list, in their pretty stone dining room or the Italian-style garden courtyard, weather permitting.

Joseph Drouhin Cellars

Beaune, wine capital of Burgundy

  • Full Breakfast, Lunch with wines

Start the day with a private tour and tasting at the iconic, family-run négociant Joseph Drouhin . Visit their beautiful cellar in the historic Duke of Burgundy’s Parliament building, built over 2,000 years ago by the Romans — here in a private setting, you will taste 6 (of their 60) fine wines.

Lunch will then be light at the convivial Maison de Maurice wine bar. Here, you will taste a range of Burgundy wines paired with local cheese, charcuterie, terrine, quiche, and small bites.

After lunch, you’ll enjoy fresh air, explore remarkable architecture, and explore history. You will rendezvous with your local expert guide and explore the emblematic Hospices de Beaune (also known as the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune). It was built in the 1400s during Burgundy’s Golden Age as a spectacular jewel box beautiful hospital for the poor. Indeed, it was a functioning hospital up until the early 1970s. It hosts the now-legendary wine auction every November; a tradition started in the 1860s to raise money for charity and celebrate the new vintage from the property’s vineyards.

Your guide will take you through the fascinating history and the wide range of rooms and halls on site, like the old pharmacy and laboratory, the collection of Flemish tapestries, and more. After an insightful visit, enjoy a pleasant walk with your guide to your next Burgundy wine tasting at the highly esteemed Bouchard Père et Fils in the gorgeous Château de Beaune.

En route, you might pop into the Fallot Dijon mustard shop and mill. La Moutarderie Fallot is a historic Burgundian family business, trading since the 1840s in the original building, and they still make their mustard with traditional stone grinders. Their “Pain d’epices” (gingerbread mustard) is astonishingly delicious! Pick up some goodies here.

Continue with one last captivating private wine tour and tasting at Bouchard Père & Fils. Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, it boasts a rich legacy spanning nearly three centuries and nine generations. Beneath the property, extensive cellars reach depths of up to 10 meters, providing ideal natural storage conditions for Bouchard Père & Fils’ exceptional wines. Within these cellars lies a unique collection of over 2,000 bottles dating back to the 19th century, including the oldest and most treasured wine, a Meursault Charmes 1846. You’ll enjoy a VIP tasting of a selection of their wines, though, unfortunately, not including the 1846.

The rest of the early evening is yours in the chocolate-box pretty Beaune. Check out your keepsake itinerary for local dining suggestions, and the hotel concierge will help you with any reservations.

Beaune- Côte de Beaune- Chassagne-Montrachet

The Idyllic vineyards of Côte de Beaune

Côte de Beaune, Chardonnay Paradise

  • Private Château

After breakfast, you will hit the road this morning for the legendary “Route des Grands Crus” that winds through the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune ; fine wines are in store. The first stop is at Henri de Villamont , a local wine legend. The property is exceptional, with a beautiful house and vineyard-terraced hillside. Taste both whites and reds from this excellent property.

Your next appointment will be at the beautiful Domaine Comte Senard in Aloxe-Corton. First, visit their 14th-century stunning cellar before sitting down to a relaxed wine-tasting lunch of classic cooking in their bright and cheery dining room.

After lunch, the next stop is an architecturally intriguing wine château—the captivating Château de Meursault, boasting an astonishing 1,000 years of history, a claim that few estates can make! The wines produced here are mid-level and refreshing, but the object of this visit is to breathe in the history and admire the property’s beauty, as there are few like this in Burgundy. Enjoy a private tour of the magnificent Cistercian wine cellars and conclude with a Grand Terroir Tasting of their finest crus.

In the late afternoon, check in to the beautiful Château de Chassagne-Montrachet, where you’ll have exclusive use of the Château. What a treat. Relax and settle in. You will sleep in a magical vineyard tonight! We’ve arranged dinner for you this evening at the popular local restaurant Aupres du Clocher in nearby Pommard, known for its incredible wine list.

Côte de Nuits – Dijon

Creative Dining at Hostellerie du Chapeau rouge

Côte de Nuits & Clos de Vougeot

  • 5* Boutique hotel in Downtown Dijon
  • Full Breakfast, Lunch with wines, Dinner with wines

Today, you have a later start to take advantage of the lovely grounds and Château. You can go for a bike ride or a jog in the vines, check out a contemporary art exhibition, shoot a game of pool, or relax over coffee and a book. At 11 a.m., you will enjoy an on-site private cellar tour and a wine-tasting lunch at the beautiful Château de Chassagne-Montrachet. You will be captivated by the striking cellars dating back to the 11th century.

After lunch, transfer to the captivating Château du Clos de Vougeot , where you will have some free time to wander around the vines and museum, take photos, and enjoy the panorama. Remarkably, the walled 50-hectare vineyard, founded in the 12th century by the monks of Citeaux, is divided among 80 owners! The storied and much loved Château was also built for the monks (to house them and their wine cellar and press) and is now home to the Chevaliers du Tastevin- rock stars in the wine world.

Next in store is a private tour and tasting at Château de La Tour in Vougeot, whose parcel in the grand cru Clos de Vougeot is considered one of the best. Enjoy it!

Then head to the ancient capital of the Dukes of Burgundy—lovely Dijon —in the early evening. Lively Dijon is a beautiful cosmopolitan city with a postcard-pretty medieval core. Renaissance mansions and darling half-timbered houses make up most of the historic center. Chic shops, historic pharmacies, bakeries, and many artisan mustard makers line the cobblestoned back streets. Convivial bistros and Michelin-starred gourmet shrines grace the town, and you are spoiled for choice when it comes to winning and dining. Check in to your boutique hotel, La Cloche, and enjoy some free time to relax and rest.

Dinner tonight is a gourmet extravaganza at Two Michelin-starred l’Hostellerie du Chapeau Rouge under the leadership of Chef Willian Fachot. You will feast on a personalized tasting menu, including dishes like Bream from the river Saône; Pike dumplings with Aquitaine caviar; and Veal sweetbreads with Flavigny anise, all paired expertly by the restaurant sommelier.

Dijon- Côte de Nuits- Dijon

Beautiful, Gevrey-Chambertin

Best of Côte de Nuits

After a delicious breakfast, meet your driver this morning and head to the leading premium estate, Domaine de la Vougeraie , in Premeaux-Prissey, adjacent to the picturesque Nuits St Georges. At the helm is Jean-Charles Boisset, a staunch supporter of biodynamics. He is convinced that only living soils can provide vines with the necessary nutrients to produce top-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This ambitious domaine encompasses almost 42 hectares of vineyards and produces a wide range of wines from 36 different appellations. You will have the opportunity to taste some of their finest selections.

Next, embark on another private tour and wine tasting at Domaine Rene Leclerc in Gevrey-Chambertin. Highly praised by Robert Parker, this small, high-end winery produces exceptional wines, such as their old-vine Rene Leclerc Clos Prieur and their cellar-worthy Premier Cru Les Lavaux-St-Jacques. You’ll taste various wines and engage in a lively conversation with your effervescent hosts.

After a delightful morning of wine tasting, you’ll be ready for a relaxed and cozy lunch experience at Domaine Trapet . You’ll dine ‘table d’hôte’ style, enjoying soul-warming Boeuf Bourguignon paired with estate wines. The venue radiates charm, featuring a cozy ambiance complete with a large open fireplace, wooden-beamed ceilings, modern furnishings, and French windows that offer picturesque views of the garden.

In the afternoon, head to Marsannay for your final wine tour of the Côte d’Or at Château de Marsannay . A vertical tasting will be specially organized for you, featuring a refreshing rosé considered one of the best in France—perfect for late afternoon when your palate may be more saturated.

To conclude the day, you’ll enjoy a scenic, short drive back to Dijon in the early evening and have some free time. Dinner is at your discretion tonight, but we will provide tips on where to dine in Dijon.

Dijon- Chablis-Vézelay- Dijon

Ballooning over the vines

Chablis, Vézelay and Hot Air Balloon over Vines

Chablis is the most northern sub-region of Burgundy and is known for its elegantly mineral-rich Chardonnays. You will visit two of the best, most sought-after wine estates: Domaine Laroche and William Fevre. It’s a 90-minute drive northwest to Chablis, so sit back and either rest your eyes or engage in friendly conversation with your charming chauffeur. You will arrive by 10:30 a.m. at your first destination: Fevre .

The Chablis crafted at Fevre is quite irresistible! The quality of their hospitality is renowned; you’re sure to feel very welcome and learn all about the region: sample flagship wines and special varieties like the Grand Cru Les Preuses or the Premier Cru Vaillons.

Before lunch, stop at the stunning Domaine Laroche for a relaxed tasting and a vineyard tour. The winery excels in exceptional craftsmanship, producing high-quality Chardonnay wines. It seamlessly blends traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovations to create complex and elegantly balanced wines.

For lunch, you’ll dine at the iconic Au Fil du Zinc , a gastronomic haven nestled among vineyards in the picturesque heart of Chablis. Housed in a 12th-century water mill, the restaurant features a dining room with exposed stone walls and original wooden beams, while the terrace offers views of the Grand Cru vineyards. Head chef Mathieu Sagardoytho will prepare a tasting menu exclusively designed for you, featuring dishes like Smoked trout, Cèpe mushrooms, figs, and beetroots; Pork seasoned with Vaudouvan (French curry), Savoy cabbage, wild mushrooms, and winkles (shellfish), all complemented by excellent wines.

As you journey back to Dijon, you have two more memorable experiences. First, visit the hilltop hamlet of Vézelay, one of Burgundy’s most enchanting locales. Its Benedictine abbey, dating back to the 9th century, houses the relics of St. Mary Magdalene and is situated along the pilgrim’s route. The basilica is exquisite and is a UNESCO-protected site. You’ll have some free time here to explore the charming local shops or perhaps take a guided mini-tour of the abbey’s historic art (optional).

Before returning to Dijon, another highlight awaits a balloon ride over the peaceful countryside and crisscrossed vineyards. Upon landing, celebrate with a toast of bubbly—a truly thrilling experience! The evening is yours to relish—choose to dine at our recommended gourmet restaurants in Dijon or enjoy an optional evening activity such as a nightcap wine tasting (booking required).

Historic Dijon

Market & Cooking in Delightful Dijon

  • 5* Boutique hotel in Dijon
  • Full Breakfast, Cooking Class Lunch with wine, Dinner with wines

This morning, you have a fun culinary treat in store: a private guided tour of the 19th-century Les Halles market led by your host for the morning, Chef Pierre. Together, you will explore the food market designed by Gustave Éiffel (think Éiffel Tower in Paris). The displays of fresh produce are incredible, and the aromas of pungent cheeses, ripe fruits, and freshly baked bread will have you salivating. Under Pierre’s expert guidance, you will select your ingredients for your upcoming cooking class and carry on to an elegant nearby flat where you prepare and cook a three-course meal together, sipping wine and enjoying funny tales of local gastro folklore. Then sit down and enjoy lunch with your chef, savoring the fruit of your efforts—accompanied by beautifully paired wines!

After lunch, in the late afternoon, enjoy a leisurely, digestive walk through the charming streets of Dijon. Your guide for this segment, a local art historian, will show you the best of what Dijon has to offer. A visit to the Burgundy Museum—choose between Musée de la Bourgogne or Musée des Beaux-Arts— is fascinating. Your guide will regale you with amusing anecdotes and intriguing historical facts unique to the region. Stop and make a wish on the tiny stone owl carved on the exterior of the beautiful Église Notre-Dame. Legend has it that good luck will come your way if you give the owl a little rub with your left hand. Next, your guide will take you up the 15th-century Tour Philippe le Bon in the Palais des Ducs (just over 300 steps), and you can enjoy dramatic views over magical Dijon from the top.

Dinner tonight will be a relaxed and cozy affair at the wine lovers’ haunt, Dr. Wine . Enjoy light dishes like basil-marinated shrimp with lemon cream, thyme-scented roast baby lamb chops, and cherry Clafoutis, with wines from Chassagne-Montrachet and Chambolle-Musigny.

See you again soon, Au Revoir

Au Revoir La Bourgogne!

  • Full Breakfast

This morning (or afternoon, check out is at noon), at your preferred time, your chauffeur will transfer you to your next port of call, such as the Dijon train station. We hope you had the time of your life on this enchanting journey through the Burgundian wine country!

The sublime purity of Chablis

burgundy gold tour

Rest your head in comfort

The minerality of chablis.

Today is devoted to Chablis. We visit two top producers of the quintessential cool-climate Chardonnay. It is minerally, with a beautiful line of acidity giving it the backbone to age gracefully over decades, in the best examples.

We lunch at a charming Hostellerie, with seasonal cooking that aims to show off the best of these noble wines. We arrive back in Beaune for an exceptional dinner at another Hostellerie, that of Levernois, with its Michelin starred, gastronomic restaurant.

THE COMPLEXITY OF THE COTE DE NUITS

We will visit outstanding producers in this hallowed region of top quality Pinot Noir. With age these wines become supple, beguiling and even bewitching on occasion.

We will lunch at the Domaine Comte Senard for a memorable last meal together, with some of their magnificent wines pairing the Burgundian menu.

Both the domains he has access to and his celebrity clients have requested anonymity and discretion, but it’s important to note that Lebault’s first book, Discovering the Vineyard Climats of Burgundy , opens with a preface written by Aubert de Villaine, proprietor of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti , and his second, In Climats Veritas , features a preface penned by Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco, a onetime client of Bourgogne Gold Tour who was recommended to Lebault by a top end domain. The majority of Lebault’s clients spend one or two days with him, and each visit is a customized experience featuring the finest wineries and the rarest wines. He can even get his hands on what he describes as “extra secret bottles,” and birthyear or anniversary vintages are procured as needed.

burgundy gold tour

Lebault is not merely a connected man. His expertise comes from a life immersed in wine. He has three separate degrees from the Université de Bourgogne in winemaking; wine, culture, and wine tourism; and viticulture and environmental issues. In addition, he holds the French Wine Scholar certification from the Wine Scholar Guild, level 3 WSET qualification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, certification from the École des Vins de Bourgogne in wine tasting and sensorial analysis, training in the geology of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, and certification as a guide from the Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne . And on top of that, prior to starting his company, he worked at a variety of domains including Tissier, René Bouvier, Christian Gros, Cécile Tremblay, and Vincent Barbier, the last of whom is the master of ceremonies at the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin dinners at the Château du Clos de Vougeot. More recently, when there was no tourism in Burgundy or anywhere else, Lebault got back into the vineyards for hands-on work. He tells Robb Report , “In 2020, during Covid, I had the great opportunity to make the harvest at the most prestigious domain of Bourgogne, well known all over the world, in the center of Vosne-Romanée, for three weeks.”

We had agreed to meet next to the recently restored fountain in the place of Meursault. On a foggy December morning, as we approached the hotel de ville with its distinct Burgundian glazed roof tiles, a man stood commanding the space around him. It was Youri Lebault from Bourgogne Gold Tours , our guide for the day. Immaculately dressed in an outfit straight out of the pages of GQ — fitted quilted jacket, merino wool scarf, sleek brown leather boots — Youri led us to his equally immaculate Mercedes SUV.

Despite his name, Youri is thoroughly French, born and raised in Burgundy . The story is that when his mother was pregnant she was reading Doctor Zhivago and decided Youri would be a good name for her baby boy. When he was a young man, as a favor to a friend, Youri led some Americans on a wine tour of his home area. Impressed with his knowledge, they urged him to pursue it as his vocation.

The Climats of Bourgogne

Youri's classroom

Since that early wine tour, Youri has continued to increase his professionalism and improve his wine tours. During the winter he studies English and meets with wine producers, negotiants , and restaurateurs to make his wine tours memorable. He also studied at the local wine university, L'Institut Guyot in Dijon, to increase his wine knowledge and has written a book, Discovering the Vineyard Climats of Burgundy .

Climat , is the French concept that helped us to finally understand the wines of Burgundy. It was from Youri that we learned that the very basis of Burgundy wine classification — the very foundation of Burgundian wines — is climat , the tiny plots of land, each with a unique soil structure and slope, each with a couple hundred rows of vines, that produce wines that are distinct from the neighboring vineyards only meters away.

We learned this from Youri (and were finally able to grasp the essence of the region's wines) at his roadside "classroom" — the top of one of the ubiquitous stone walls that separate the climats , on the side of a gravel path cutting through these most famous vineyards. With maps and charts he made the Burgundy landscape come alive. We were on our way to Maison Jean-Claude Boisset in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, to taste for ourselves a few of the climats of Burgundy.

In the Cellars of Maison Jean-Claude Boisset

Maison Jean-Claude Boisset

Maison Jean-Claude Boisset is found behind a stone wall, set in a compound that once was a convent for Ursulines nuns, dating back as far as 12th century. It was during the French Revolution that the nuns were forced into exile, leaving behind the solid Burgundian stone buildings. In 1961, an energetic 18-year-old named Jean-Claude Boisset converted the convent into the winery that still bears his name.

There we met up with Bénigne Barbier, the genial manager for the company's VIP customers . He led us down stone steps ("Watch your head!") into the labyrinthine cellars of the former convent. After a few turns the narrow cave opened up into an impressive underground dining room with enough solid oak chairs for a banquet of twenty or thirty people. This, we learned, is the private wine cellar of the Boisset family. Although the Maison is open to the public, only special guests are allowed access here. People like Catherine Deneuve (we saw a rack of the wine she tasted and liked on June 1, 1985) and the lucky few who sign up for Youri's tour.

Tasting the Wines

Maison Jean-Claude Boisset

In the private wine cellar Youri handed the reins over to Bénigne Barbier. In front of him were a line of bottles with labels that read like the wine list of your dreams. Before us was truly the best of Burgundy, starting with three white wines — a Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from 2013, a Meursault-Perrieres Premier Cru from 2005, and a Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru from 1999. It was an explosion of roasted pear, ripe peach, limestone, freshly cut hay, and grapefruit. The Meursault is considered to be the best vintage in the last 30 years.

There were also five red Premieres Crus and Grands Crus going back as far as 1994. Chambertin (apparently Napoleon's fave), Volnay, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Clos de la Roches, and Chambolle-Musigny — all of them names of Burgundy wine legend. The reds were feminine, round, with notes of cherry and blackberry, and hints of cedar.

What's the difference between Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, and what do those terms mean anyway? Youri was able to clearly explains all that to us.

Visiting Chateau de Meursault

Chateau de Meursault

Once again above ground, we drove south towards the Côte de Beaune region and the 12th-century Chateau de Meursault . After a private tour of the caves, we were led past a group of tourists to ascend the carpeted stairs to the chateau's private tasting area. We were seated on red velvet sofas and before us were six bottles — whites from Meursault-Charmes, Meursault-Perriere, Corton Vergennes, and reds from Pommard, Volnay and Corton. Once again, all were Premiers Crus or Grands Crus.

Bourgogne Gold Tours

Bourgogne Gold Tours

If our wish was to feel like VIPs, our wish was granted, and Youri's Bourgogne Gold Tour got us personal connections with both the wines and the people of Burgundy. It's no wonder that Bourgogne Gold is the number-one ranked wine tour in Burgundy. We didn't know what to expect when we signed on for Youri's tour, but it exceeded anything we could have imagined.

Our brief day with Youri is just a sample of what he offers his clients. He meets travelers wherever is convenient for them — in the towns of Burgundy or trains coming from Paris — and gives them a full day of wine tastings, vineyard tours, and an in-depth understanding of Burgundy wines. Most tours focus on one or two of the sub-regions of the wine country, such as Côte de Beaune or Côte de Nuits. (Don't worry, he'll explain clearly what each region entails.)

To learn more or to book your private Burgundy wine tour send Youri an email or visit the Bourgogne Gold Tour website. (On the site's top menu click on "Wine Tours" and then "Private Wine Tours".)

How to Take the High-Speed Train from Paris

High-Speed Train from Paris

What we especially like about Youri's superb wine tours is that you're able to experience them on a day trip from Paris. Catch the TGV high-speed train from Gare de Lyon in Paris (photo above) to Dijon Ville, the TGV station in Dijon, where Youri or one of his team will personally pick you up to beging your wine adventure. The train takes about ninety minutes and there are morning trains at around 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM. At the end of your day, return trains run at 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, 7:30 PM, and 8:30 PM. (Subject to change, check the current schedule when you book.)

You can buy tickets at any train station in Paris or buy them in advance, before you leave home, so you have everything arranged before you go. That's our preferred option, and it's become ridiculously easy to bu e-tickets online. You'll want tickets from "Paris Gare de Lyon" to "Dijon Ville" and be sure to choose only TGV high-speed options that take just over one hour and thirty minutes or so. (Less than two hours, in any case.)

Preview: Los Angeles FC vs. Colorado Rapids - prediction, team news, lineups

Two sides making their first appearances in the League Cup semi-finals will square off on Wednesday at BMO Stadium as Los Angeles FC host the Colorado Rapids .

The Black and Gold had no trouble advancing from the previous round, defeating the Seattle Sounders 3-0, while the Burgundy Boys stunned Club America, knocking them out 9-8 on penalties.

Match preview

Kei Kamara celebrate a goal for Los Angeles FC on July 4, 2024

Throughout the knockout phase of this competition, the Los Angeles attack has stepped it up, outscoring their previous three opponents by a combined margin of 9-1.

Steve Cherundolo 's men come into this encounter without a defeat in normal time at BMO Stadium since being clobbered 5-1 by the Columbus Crew in July.

Since suffering a 2-0 defeat at Minnesota United in March, this group have scored in every one of their competitive fixtures.

This team always seem to shine in transitional moments, producing multiple goals off counter-attacks at this tournament with plenty of quality to make those chances count.

Not since a 3-1 defeat versus the San Jose Earthquakes in early May have we seen this side lose in normal time against a team from the Western Conference of Major Leagues Soccer (MLS).

LAFC have not lost a semi-final affair in any competition since the Houston Dynamo beat them on penalties (10-9) at the 2018 US Open Cup.

Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen

The Rapids have been down many times in the 2024 Leagues Cup but never out, coming back to win two matches in this tournament when conceding first.

Chris Armas 's side have won two of their encounters at this tournament on penalties, with all of their victories being either in a shootout or by a single goal, including their upset over Club America when that match wound up 0-0 after 90 minutes.

This is the furthest they have gone in a major competition since making the 1999 US Open Cup final, losing to the Rochester Rhinos on that occasion (2-0).

Colorado have yet to win a Leagues Cup contest away from home within 90 minutes, with their victory this past weekend being their first outside Dick's Sporting Goods Park in this competition.

The Burgundy Boys have only beaten one MLS side in their previous four games against them, defeating Real Salt Lake at the Rocky Mountain Cup 3-2 in July.

They have lost all six of their away matches versus Los Angeles FC, losing the last three against them by a combined margin of 10-0.

Crisitan Olivera of Los Angeles FC is congratulated by his teammates on August 7, 2024

Over the weekend, LAFC were missing Luca Bombino due to a knock, Cristian Olivera sat out versus Seattle with minor pain, Timothy Tillman is injured, Luis Muller is questionable because of a sore hip and Lorenzo Dellavalle will not return this season from a torn ACL.

Olivier Giroud made his second appearance off the substitute's bench on Saturday, replacing Kei Kamara just beyond the hour mark.

Ryan Hollingshead scored the opener after 13 minutes, with Kamara also netting in the first half and Denis Bouanga rounding out the scoring with his fifth of the competition, drawing even with the Philadelphia Union's Tai Baribo for first.

On Saturday the Rapids did not have Kevin Cabral available due to a sore elbow, while Jackson Travis has a stress fracture and Daniel Chacon is out because of a knee injury.

Connor Ronan was among the two newcomers in the starting 11 against America, as he and Omir Fernandez replaced Oliver Larraz and Calvin Harris .

Zack Steffen rescued his team in the quarter-finals, saving the decisive fifth kick by America after Rafael Navarro had previously missed, while the Rapids keeper converted his penalty in the shootout and saw the effort by his counterpart Luis Malagon sail wide. Los Angeles FC possible starting lineup: Lloris; Murillo, Chanot, Long; Palencia, O'Brien, Sanchez, Hollingshead; Bogusz, Giroud, Bouanga

Colorado Rapids possible starting lineup: Steffen; Rosenberry, Abubakar, Maxso, Vines; Bassett, Larraz; Harris, Mihailovic, Lewis; Navarro

SM words green background

We say: Los Angeles FC 3-1 Colorado Rapids

The Rapids have fought valiantly to get to this stage, but the Black and Gold rarely lose at home and have so many attacking options to call upon that we believe it will all be too much for Colorado to handle.
