UAE visa rules: all you need to know about the 60-day visa for tourists

All visas can be renewed for a further 60 days.

The UAE is offering new types of visa, including options for long-stay tourists, jobseekers, accomplished professionals, star students and high-net-worth individuals. Wam

Salam Al Amir author image

The new UAE visa rules that came into effect on October 3 allow holidaymakers to stay for 60 days at a time.

The decision to make all entry visas valid for 60 days from the date of issue ― double the previous allowance ― is one of a series of visa changes that were approved by the Cabinet in April.

Previously, there was no specific visa for tourists and those wishing to visit the UAE applied for 30-day, 60-day or 90-day visit visas.

The one, two and three-month entry permits are still available on a new visa, but mainly for people wishing to visit friends or relatives in the country, which requires documentary evidence proving the relationship and reasons for the visit.

All entry visas are available for single or multiple entry and can be renewed for a further 60 days.

Roshan Davis, manager of Golden Talent Tourism Agency in Dubai, said the change has made it easier for tourists to spend extended time in the country exploring and enjoying everything it has to offer.

“We have received more than 50 tourist visa applications from customers in the past four days,” he said.

Who is the tourist visa for?

Those who do not qualify for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to the UAE can apply for a tourist visa.

Citizens from 69 countries and states are eligible for a visa on arrival in the UAE . Females below the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for a tourist visa unless they are travelling with their parents.

How can I apply for a tourist visa?

Visitors from countries that do not have a visa-on-arrival arrangement with the UAE can apply for their visas in advance through a travel agency or through the airline with which they are travelling.

How much does the tourist visa cost?

Mr Davis said they charge between Dh550 and Dh600 for 60-day visas and between Dh350 and Dh750 for one, two and three-month visa requests for visiting relatives.

A 60-day single entry visa with Etihad Airways costs Dh650, while a similar visa from Emirates airline costs Dh697 ($190). Both airlines offer a shorter, 30-day visa priced at Dh350 for Etihad and Dh330 ($90) for Emirates.

UAE or DUBAI TOURIST VISA

A UAE or Dubai tourist visa can only be applied through a UAE-based sponsor or an authorized agent. A sponsor can be a UAE-based airline, UAE-based hotel, UAE national or resident, UAE-based company or government entity or a UAE-based tour operator.

The sponsor is responsible for your actions in the UAE. If you overstay your visa, the sponsor is held responsible and will face consequences by the government of UAE.

Why do you need a sponsor for a UAE tourist visa?

A UAE-based sponsor is mandatory for all UAE tourist visas. Your sponsor is responsible for all your actions while you are in the UAE. They must make sure you leave the country in time without overstaying your visa. If you don’t know anyone personally in the UAE, you can use either your airline, hotel or tour agent for your visa processing.

It’s silly to still use sponsors in this day and age. The sponsor model is an old model and many countries are moving away from such ways of visa processing. But countries such as UAE, Singapore, etc. are still stuck with this visa model.

Which sponsor or agent should you use for your UAE tourist visa?

If you don’t have a sponsor, you can use a UAE-authorized agent to apply for your UAE tourist visa. There are a bazillion agents these days processing UAE tourist visas, including VFS Global.

Thanks to the internet, you can apply for a UAE tourist visa through an agent completely online in the comfort of your home. All you need is a scanned copy of your Passport ID page and a digital passport-size photo.

The fee, documentation and processing time vary by agent. Local agents in your country are usually cheaper but you must do your due diligence on their authenticity, hidden charges and processing time before applying through them.

Which agent do I recommend for a UAE visit visa?

My preferred agent for UAE or Dubai tourist visas is Etihad Airways. I usually prefer a reputed international agent, so I went with Etihad Airways. They only act as an agent for your visa and you don’t have to fly with Etihad Airways. You can fly with any budget airline and travel to/from any international airport in the UAE.

Other agents that you can use and their fee for a UAE 30-day single-entry tourist visa is below.

My preferred agent

  • Etihad Airways | 361 AED | Few hours | No security deposit

UAE based agents

  • Arabiers | 359 AED | 24-48 hours
  • Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA) | 335 AED

India based agents

  • MakeMyTrip | Approx. 311 AED | 7-9 days

IMPORTANT Some agents will charge a security deposit which will be refunded to you on your exit from the UAE. So do your due diligence before applying for your UAE tourist visa with any of the above agents.

I have a detailed article on how to apply for a UAE or Dubai tourist visa online with Etihad Airways. Follow the article for step-by-step instructions on how to apply for your UAE tourist visa.

Planning to extend your visit in the UAE? These are the rules for extending your visa

Dubai: If you are currently visiting the UAE on a tourist visa, it is important to note that if you plan to extend your stay you will only be able to extend the visa once, for a period of 30 days.

Last week, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) stated to Gulf News  that the decision to extend a one-time visit visa for 30 days only was issued several weeks ago and is being implemented in accordance with a decision issued by the UAE Cabinet.

So, if you are planning to come to the UAE on a visit visa, or are currently already in the UAE, here are the details of the visa application and extension process that you need to be aware of.

The extension can only be done by the sponsor of the original entry permit

Fahad K A, Visa coordinator at Deira Travel and Tourist Agency, spoke to Gulf News about the changes and what visitors should know to extend their visa easily.

“If a tourist agency applied for your visa, you would have to go to them for your extension. Whichever agency applied for your visa, only they can extend that visa,” he said.

If you do wish to stay for longer in the UAE, you would need to exit the country and then apply for a new tourist visa, on which you can enter the country. Many travel agencies also provide an ‘A2A’ service, which refers to an airport-to-airport service, that visitors use to exit the UAE and then return once a new visa is issued. However, it is important to remember that this is subject to the visa application by the agency being approved by the authorities.

Adnan Khan, operation manager at Siddique Haider Corporate Services Provider, advised visitors to always be aware of any such changes in regulations and seek professional advice. To find out about your specific visa application, you can either contact the ICP customer happiness centre – 600 522222 – or the Amer contact centre – 800 5111 .

“It is really important to make sure you stay in the UAE as per the duration of your visa, or you may face legal issues because of overstaying your visa,” he said.

Visit visa options

According to the statement by ICP, people can apply for a 30-, 60- or 90-day visa through the ICP website – icp.gov.ae – or the smartphone application ‘UAE ICP’, under the ‘Visit Visa For Friend or Relative’ category. This means that if you are a UAE resident, you can use this service to apply for a 30-, 60- or 90-day visa.

Documents required

• Recent passport size coloured photograph of the relative or friend. • Proof of kinship (birth or marriage certificate) – this is required in case you are sponsoring your family member’s visit visa. • A copy of the relative’s or friend’s valid passport. • A copy of your Emirates ID. • Proof of residence for the sponsored. Here you may be able to provide your rental contract or details of the hotel reservation for the relative or friend. • Copy of the return ticket.

For a step-by-step guide on how you can apply for this visa, click here .

How do I extend the visa?

As mentioned earlier, if your visa was issued by a tourist agency, you would need to approach them once again to ask for an extension. If you are here on a visit visa sponsored by your relative or friend, they can visit a typing centre that is registered with the ICP. These typing centres can be found all across the UAE and you can find all the locations here: https://icp.gov.ae/en/typing-offices/

If you are in Dubai, apart from typing centres, you can also visit an Amer centre. Amer centres processes immigration applications on behalf of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFAD) and you can find the list of all centres located in Dubai here: https://gdrfad.gov.ae/en/customer-happiness-centers#

When you do apply for the extension, it will be issued only once and for one month only , as per the latest statement by the ICP.

How much does the visa extension cost?

According to ICP, the extension for a period of 30 days costs Dh750 .

The UAE recently implemented revised rules for those who wish to renew their visit visa or tourist visa. Here are three ways it is being done:

Exit UAE to renew visit visa

The most budget-friendly alternative is to leave the UAE via bus and travel to Oman. A new UAE visa will then be applied and once it is issued, the individual can return to the UAE. A UAE visa is usually issued on the same day, but a visa to enter Oman takes up to two days to process.

UAE visa renewal without exiting the country

Dubai offers visa change to those who wish to renew their UAE tourist visa or visit visa without exiting the country. However, this is only available until Dubai Immigration updates its system. It is also available only to those whose visas were issued in Dubai.

Airport-to-airport visa change

You can renew your visa with a short flight without having to leave the airplane. Airport-to-airport (A to A) is the fastest way to get your visa, although a bit costlier than other alternatives. Travel agents will arrange for your new visa to be issued just in time so you can hop on the plane to exit to a neighbouring country and fly on the same flight back to the UAE.

So what are UAE visit visa renewal rules?

Those whose visas were issued in Dubai can extend their visa without leaving the country. The process is in place until further notice.

Those who have a visit visa from any other emirate and want to extend their stay in the UAE on visit visa must exit the country and apply for a new visa.

Those on visit visa and want to change their status to a residence visa or any long-term visa must exit the UAE and re-enter once their new visa is issued. ICA/Expat Media

If your loved ones are planning a trip to the UAE, here's a reminder: Tourists can apply for a family group visit visa, which is free of cost for children.

Under the scheme, children under the age of 18 can be granted a visa for free while usual charges apply to their parents.

“The application for this visa should be submitted along with either father’s or mother’s application,” said Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager for inbound and outbound operations at Regal Tours Worldwide.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

Industry experts said several visitors had been opting for this entry permit.

“A family group visit visa is more convenient and cost-effective for families, given that there is no visa fee for children under the age of 18,” Subair said, adding that there are no restrictions on the number of children who can apply for the permit.

The free visa is also applicable even to children who are travelling with just one parent, he explained. It is available for a 30- or 60-day stay, which can be extended within the country.

With the festive season just around the corner, several family group visit visas are being issued every day — particularly to Indians who wish to celebrate Diwali in Dubai, said Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels.

This visa, however, is not new. It was introduced two years ago and has since been a popular option for visitors from around the world.

How to apply

  • A family will have to submit copies of their passports and photos — all at once — to a travel agency.
  • Fees are paid. Note that though the visa is free for children, travel agent service charges and insurance fees will apply.
  • The agency then processes the application.
  • The visa is usually issued in a day or two.
  • Visa fee for parents, along with the service charge for children, may vary depending on the travel agency.
  • A 30-day visa for a parent ranges from Dh350 to Dh500.
  • Service charge and insurance for a child range between Dh80 and Dh120.
  • A 60-day visa will cost Dh500 to Dh650, while the service charge, including insurance, may vary from Dh130 to Dh170.

Requirements

  • Passport copy
  • Passport-sized photograph

Extension policy

Experts say the family visa can be extended without exiting the country, “however, a full visa fee has to be paid for children. The extension within the country is not free for children", said Subair.

“Visitors can extend the family visa for up to 120 days without exiting the country,” he added.
