All about the Serenity Area on a Carnival Cruise ship

No matter how well a cruise ship is designed, it can feel crowded, especially on sea days when all passengers are on board. It’s seemingly much worse in the summer months when ships are bustling with energetic children. So finding a place to have some peace and quiet can be quite a challenge. Thankfully, it can be easy to find some solitude in the Serenity Area on a Carnival cruise ship. 

The Serenity Area, technically called “Serenity Adult-Only Retreat,” is an adults-only section of the cruise ship. Only passengers 21 and older are allowed in this area, and while an occasional kid may slip in, it’s not long before a crew member politely guides them to the main pool. 

The Serenity Area usually has a different feel from the rest of the ship; you’ll find upgraded padded loungers, lay-flat day beds, clamshells, and hammocks. The vibrant colors from the rest of the Carnival ship are replaced with rich dark brown tones and accented with teal highlights. Soft, peaceful music is piped in through music systems. The Serenity Area also usually has its own bar, and some ships even have a salad bar in it (Vista, Horizon, Panorama, Mardi Gras, and Celebration). 

The Serenity Area first debuted on the Carnival Inspiration in 2007. Carnival has long been known as a family-friendly cruise line, which meant lots of children running around. To help adults find some much-needed peace and quiet while on vacation, Carnival sectioned off a section of the ship to be adults only. The area was a hit with guests. A Serenity Area was soon added to the Inspiration’s sister ships and then rolled out to the rest of the Carnival fleet over the years. Today, every Carnival ship has a dedicated Serenity Area. 

What is in the Serenity Area of a Carnival Ship?

The size, layout, and what’s included in the Serenity Area will vary depending on the ship. Since a majority of the fleet was in service before this section area was added, most ships required a retrofit to add this section. During major retrofits, Carnival took existing space and upgraded it to the new Serenity Area. Because of that, the different Serenity Areas all have different features and layouts, but the general effect is the same. Regardless of the ship, though, the Serenity area has a dedicated bar, upgraded loungers, and a water feature (a pool, hot tub, or both). 

Which Carnival ships have adults-only pools in the Serenity Area?

The main pools on a Carnival ship can get pretty busy with children, so an adults-only pool is a perfect solution. Unfortunately, less than half of the Carnival ships have a pool in the Serenity Area. So if you love an adults-only pool during your cruise, you’re limited in your options.

Almost every Serenity Area has at least one hot tub, whirlpool, or jacuzzi. It’s a great place to relax during the day or in the evenings.

Which Carnival ships have the Serenity Area in the aft (or back) of the ship?

The location of the Serenity Area can make a big difference in the experience. Often, on the ships where the adults-only deck is on the front of the ship, it can get windy, and high glass partitions are needed to make it bearable. However, the partitions take away a bit from the view.

Ships that have the Serenity Area in the back often have more calm winds. They also offer much better ocean views because they don’t need the high glass partitions and instead have standard rails.

How much does the Serenity Area cost?

There is no additional charge to use the Serenity Area on a Carnival ship. If you’re a passenger over 21, just head over to the deck and enjoy. 

How crowded is the Serenity Area?

Since there’s no additional fee to use the Serenity Area, it can get crowded on sea days. Especially in the morning, it can be hard to find a lounger and definitely hard to find a clamshell on sea days. Thankfully, there seems to be fewer chair hogs/savers in the Serenity Area than in other areas of the ship.  

In the afternoon, it usually opens up more as people head to lunch and for a nap. The Serenity Area is also a great place to spend time in the evening with the soft music and mood lighting. Usually, once per cruise, they’ll be a party in the Serenity Area.

Carnival Serenity Retreat (Adults Only Area)

Our family recently spent time over Thanksgiving on the Carnival Victory to celebrate my sister’s 40th birthday and my dad’s 65th birthday.

With a group of 10 of use with varying ages, we were all looking for something different to do on the ship.

One of the best amenities on the Carnival Cruise Line is their Serenity Adult Only area. (At this time the Serenity Retreat is available fleetwide, except for the Carnival Conquest and the Carnival Triumph.)

It is by far my favorite place on the ship.

When I was there it wasn’t too crowded but of course, that will vary with each cruise and on sea days it tends to be a lot more crowded.

The Serenity Retreat is open 24 hours a day during your cruise and I would often see folks there at night enjoying a quiet book read or a soak in the hot tub.

Although the area is accessible around the clock, the hot tub and bar hours are from 8 AM to 10 PM, but be sure to check once you’re onboard, as it can vary.

On each side of the lounge, there are covered areas to sit and chat with others (or by yourself) while still having views. I love the “bird nest” lounge chairs and would grab one of these when available.

The deck has a spa-like feel with black faux-wicker furniture with teal-colored cushions and sun-yellow shade umbrellas and guest towels.

Serenity Showers

Oh I forgot what this one was!

Pick a side of the ship you want to be on and lounge on this lounge beds. There was one lady who made herself at home with towels, iPad, drinks, books, and more. She was there almost every day enjoying her serenity away from others.

If the oversized lounge beds are not “your thing” then you may enjoy the area with regular sun-lounging chairs.

Serenity Hot Tubs

Two hot tubs for cruisers to enjoy with a lot of your friends. (Note – they are closed since the ship was in port.)

The water temperature for these hot tubs is truly hot as opposed to the ones that everyone uses. No small children means hotter water!  

The hot tub hours are from 8 AM – 10 PM each are on your cruise.

Serenity Bar

Thirsty? There is a bar to quench your thirst with juices, soda, adult beverages, and more. The bar hours are from 8 AM – 10 PM each are on your cruise.

If you are considering a Carnival Cruise and want to get away from the main crowd anytime during your cruise, consider heading up to the Serenity Retreat.

Pro Tip: If you are looking for “a little quiet,” go to the back of the Serenity area if your ship is configured where the chairs are near the water slides.

Smaller Carnival ships do not have the full-blown adults-only lounge and I was very disappointed when I made my way to the Carnival Serenity on Imagination looking for a cabana only to find a small area with lounge chairs.

The area on the smaller ships is adult only – 21 years old minimum, but the amenities are not as great as the longer cruises on the larger ships.

This didn’t stop my girlfriend of spending a few spare hours at the Serenity to enjoy some quiet reading time.

7 best Mexico cruises for 2025 and 2026

Cruises to Mexico have an appeal that's hard to match.

Pacific Coast itineraries cover both Baja California (with stops in Ensenada) and the area farther south considered the Mexican Riviera (featuring the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta). Where else can you spend the morning whale watching from a small boat, followed by an afternoon of shopping or enjoying authentic Mexican cuisine?

The ports on Mexico's eastern coast are often lumped together with other Central American ports or island destinations on Western Caribbean cruises . Do a bit of digging, and you can find three- to five-night cruises from Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; and Mobile, Alabama, that visit only Mexican ports, including Cozumel, Costa Maya and Progreso.

Beaches and water sports, as well as eating and drinking, are the primary attractions on cruises to Mexico. Both coasts offer ample opportunity to play in the sun and sand. The best Mexico cruises have lengthy port stops that provide plenty of time to explore, plus time on board the ship to relax and decompress.

You might even be able to cruise to Mexico without a passport if your cruise begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line run year-round cruises from the Los Angeles area and Galveston ports, while Princess Cruises, Holland America , Norwegian Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises and Disney Cruise Line offer seasonal cruises to Mexico from the West Coast.

Occasionally, you can find luxury cruises to the Mexican Riviera on lines Regent Seven Seas . Lindblad Expeditions and UnCruise Adventures offer nature-oriented small-ship opportunities in Baja California.

We scoured all the options and came up with the best Mexico cruises to help narrow your choices. Here's what we found.

3-night Baja cruise on Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance gets the nod for having a year-round schedule of short escapes to Mexico.

Carnival Cruise Line 's west coast Mexico cruises sail from the port of Long Beach, which is a fun destination in its own right, with beaches, water sports and the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Carnival Radiance (formerly Carnival Victory) underwent a complete refit in 2021, adding a dedicated comedy club, top-deck water attractions and the first-ever chicken joint from Shaquille O'Neal, aptly named Big Chicken .

The ship goes to Ensenada and back with one fun day at sea. Water sports and whale watching in winter are among the top activities in Ensenada for Carnival cruisers. For a local lunch in port, order fish tacos; Ensenada claims to have invented the dish. Some also claim Ensenada is the original home of the margarita. Drink enough of those, and it won't matter if it's true or not. If margaritas aren't your thing, there are popular wineries in port worth checking out.

You can also cruise this route on Carnival Firenze , one of Carnival's two "Fun Italian Style" ships (adopted from sister cruise line Costa). However, that ship mainly sails four- and five-night itineraries from Long Beach.

Who should go : It's no secret that Carnival's Fun Ships are known as party ships. This short hop to Mexico is ideal for residents of the Western states looking for an escape any time of year. The ship's atmosphere is enthusiastic and fun, which spills into Ensenada on the single port day of the cruise.

4-night Baja cruise with Catalina Island on Disney Wonder

Disney Wonder is one of Disney Cruise Line 's oldest and smallest ships, carrying only 2,700 passengers. However, it's packed with Disney adventures, including a musical stage production of "Frozen," character meet-ups and the most family-friendly cabins at sea. Wonder sails to Mexico from San Diego during the fall and winter.

Not every four-night cruise on Wonder includes Catalina Island, but if you can snag one that does, it's a huge bonus of family fun. Activities in the port of Avalon on Catalina include an amazing zip line course with five lines. Soaring along the island's hillsides 600 feet above the beaches below, the adventure course takes more than two hours to complete.

If your crew isn't into high-speed zipping, try a backcountry bison expedition or a relaxing day at the beach. Catalina is a charming island with a European feel, memorable food and a fascinating history. The second port on the itinerary is Ensenada, where the wildlife-watching or beach fun can continue.

Who should go: Disney Wonder is an ideal ship for family cruise travel from the West Coast. Features include the Marvel Superhero Academy inside the Disney Oceaneer Club, the activity space for kids. You'll have family-friendly accommodations on board, most with split bathrooms (one with toilet and sink, the other with bath-shower combo and sink). Parents have plenty of opportunities to enjoy a night out without the kids, dining at the adults-only Palo specialty restaurant or sampling an adult beverage at the After Hours entertainment district.

5- and 6-night Cabo overnight cruises on Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean 's Quantum of the Seas is one of the largest vessels ever to sail from Los Angeles.

Quantum of the Seas carries 4,180 passengers at double occupancy. The ship features skydiving and surfing simulators, a bumper car pavilion, robotic bartenders and laser tag. The ship has so many included and extra-fee dining options that you'll be hard-pressed to try them all on a five- or six-night sailing.

The allure of this itinerary is the overnight in Cabo San Lucas. (The six-nighter also includes a visit to Ensenada.) After all those other cruise ships say adios to Cabo, cruisers can explore the city's nightlife. Street taco tour, anyone? Tequila flights? How else can you enjoy late-night freshly fried churros on a street corner?

The rest of the trip is all about fun on the ship as you cruise the Pacific Ocean waters.

Who should go: A Mexico cruise on Quantum of the Seas is ideal for big-ship lovers. Myriad flights into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the area's smaller regional airports make it accessible to most of the Western states. For Californians who can drive to the port in less than a day, the fun of a beach day in nearby Long Beach before or after the cruise makes this sailing an easy choice.

7-night Mexican Riviera cruise on Discovery Princess

When Princess Cruises ' Discovery Princess isn't in Alaskan waters, it can be found cruising to the Mexican Riviera from the Los Angeles port at San Pedro.

The seven-night itinerary includes Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, plus three sea days to enjoy the ship, which carries 3,660 guests. Discovery Princess brings a bit of elegance to the riviera with afternoon tea and the ability to order the Ultimate Balcony Breakfast to your cabin's private veranda (for an additional charge).

For a true splurge, book one of two Sky Suites on Discovery Princess. Each suite has two bedrooms and a luxurious 1,000-square-foot balcony for unrivaled views.

Who should go: This is the best Mexico cruise for those seeking Princess' relaxed upscale mode of cruising. Children are always welcome on Princess, and there are plenty of connecting rooms and cabin options with third and fourth bunks. Though the ship offers a youth program, don't expect waterslides and thrill rides. The vibe on board is low-key, and the average age is a bit older when compared to Royal Caribbean or Carnival.

7-night Mexican Riviera cruise on Carnival Panorama

Carnival Panorama is loaded with Carnival-style fun. From a jaw-dropping, nail-biting ropes course high above the decks to waterslides and an indoor trampoline park, this ship is a crash course in playtime. The seven-night itineraries sail from Long Beach and include the main western Mexico ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, where the ship stays into the evening hours.

With three sea days, cruisers have plenty of time to enjoy the ship. The best part is that this floating thrill ride cruises this itinerary year-round.

Who should go: It's a great choice for families with tweens and teens because so many of the onboard activities are geared to them. Couples sailing without kiddos can enjoy adults-only areas like the Serenity sun deck retreat, a plush Cloud 9 Spa and Havana cabins with their exclusive pool deck.

7-night expedition to Baja California with UnCruise

UnCruise Adventures does Mexico with an entirely different approach to cruising.

Leave the party ships and the thrill rides behind for an expedition adventure aboard the 66-passenger Safari Voyager. The ship sails from La Paz, Mexico, between January and June, taking passengers in search of gray whales, whale sharks, rays and an amazing variety of sea life, as well as wildlife on dry land.

Activities include kayaking, Zodiac boat rides, snorkeling, hiking and, of course, downtime at the beach. Safari Explorer is somewhat basic in its amenities. You can expect cabins that are quite cozy, but there's ample public space on deck to watch for sealife and meet your fellow passengers.

UnCruise fares include all meals, excursions, equipment, beverages (including alcohol) and airport transfers, leaving you free to enjoy the adventure.

Who should go: This cruise is for physically fit adults and families with kids ages 8-17 seeking adventure in the wilds and waters of Baja California.

10-night Mexico cruise with Cabo overnight on Grand Princess

Princess Cruises' 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess sail seasonal 10-night Baja Peninsula & Sea of Cortez itineraries from Los Angeles.

The Grand Class vessels have an intimate feel and are on average 20% smaller than Princess' newer Royal Class ships (such as the previously mentioned Discovery Princess). The interiors revolve around lively, piazza-like atriums with cafes and boast large theaters and multiple restaurants and bars.

Each sailing calls in La Paz, Loreto and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with an overnight stop in Cabo San Lucas. Who should go: This cruise is for anyone who enjoys exploring port cities more in-depth than what's offered by a standard port call and who appreciates less of a party atmosphere on board. Daytime activities in Cabo include sport fishing, wildlife watching, boat rides, camel rides, kayaking, parasailing and snorkeling. Add in evening tasting tours, and you're set.

Serenity Adult-Only Retreat Adults-only outdoor area featuring 2 hot tubs and bar, padded hammocks, sun loungers, round 2-seater chaise lounges, and shaded areas. Open 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Guests must be 21 years or older. There are 2 massage huts (for a fee), beverage service (for a fee), complimentary chopped salad stations, piped in music.

Carnival Breeze deck 15 plan (Sky-Serenity)

Deck layout and review, review of carnival breeze deck 15 (sky-serenity).

Serenity is the ship’s adults-only retreat for passengers 21+ yo. This is a forward-location outdoor area with an exclusive sundeck for relaxation and sunbathing. The adult deck is complimentary (free entry) and accessible at any time via stairs (also directly from Cloud 9 Spa).

The Serenity whirlpools (large-size outdoor hot tubs) are cantilevered (infinity pool type, with glass walls). The whirlpools and the waiter-served Serenity Bar are available between 8 am – 10 pm. Hours may vary depending on cruise itinerary, portdays/seadays, weather.

Serenity Deck is furnished with hammocks, wicker chaise lounges and clamshell chairs (plush seating, teal cushions). There is a separate shaded seating area with plush wicker sofas, chairs and tables. At regular bar prices, Serenity Bar’s menu offers drinks and refreshments (cocktails, beer/buckets, wine, frozens, smoothies, shakes, soda).

On Sky Deck is also the Twister Waterslide’s entrance.

Quick poll...

On my most recent cruise, while lounging in the Serenity area, a woman decided to remove her bikini top and lay out face up. It didn't bother me, but the women laying next to me were scandalized and kept talking loudly that the topless woman should cover up (but didn't actually say anything directly to her.)

What do you think? Is the adult only area swimsuit optional?:cool:

It is not policy that Serenity is clothing optional.

I personally don't care about that but it is NOT the way it is supposed to be there.

There are many adult only hotels in the world. Only some of them are clothing optional hotels.

Just because it is an adult area doesn't make it automatically a place where you can just take off clothing!

It's a Ship!!!

Carnival used to have a top optional section on some ships, but they did away with it a while ago. Serenity is not top optional.

This is a touchy subject. I know the ship leaves from the U.S. But almost all of the staff and some passengers aren't from the U.S. And don't have our views on clothing optional areas. I've seen where women forgot they removed their tops to not get a tan line on their back and forgot and gave the main pool area a show and I've also seen thongs by the main pool. I think it's ok if done in the adult only area where no minors are allowed.

We just got off the Fascination, leaving from San Juan. There was never any "topless" stuff going on. It was just a nice place to relax away from the noise. We went there about every afternoon and several times at night, and never was it "too adult."

I think this happens on EVERY cruise, at some point in time. We had a woman on one cruise who would take a dip...go to her lounger and change into a dry bathing suit in front of everyone. Got to the point where all the 13-15 year old boys congregated just to see the show! Yep...stark naked...and not "young"!

But no...there are no "clothing optional" areas on ships unless you're in Europe...they don't mind a bit of nudity like we Americans!

My late husband was so disappointed one our first cruise. He went up to what was then the topless deck on the Celebration and no one was there.

The Europeans I know say it's not something they think about. They don't look for "clothing optional" because in Europe it's completely normal to go topless and they don't realize it's an issue when they do it. I'm okay with it. But I'm a guy so...

Here in Ontario Canada it's perfectly legal for a woman to walk around the street topless. You don't see it often, but it's legal.

I would never do it, but that's just me. I honestly wouldn't care or even pay much attention if a woman around me took her top off. If guys can do it why can't women? Way too many people are way to hung up on boobs. And I wouldn't even care if my kids saw it. Not even my teenaged son. I would look at it as a great opportunity to remind my boys that women and girls are to always be respected and not treated as sexual objects.

my wife and i made one only trip to the serenity deck. There was only five people on the deck. There was a bartender who spoke very little english, my wife, me and a young couple who were in the act of making a baby in the hot tub.

I would of rather had the topless woman.

Well, as many people will gladly point out, Carnival doesn't seem to enforce the "dress-code" on the formal night in the Main Dining Room, so why would they enforce the... um... "undress code" on Serenity Deck? Personally, I am not bothered either way.

All kidding aside though, I have stumbled across 8th/9th grade kids getting "real cozy" in the private covered couches on Serenity trying to do adult things while not actually being adults.

I've been on lots and lots of cruises, and the Serenity Deck, (Especially on "Fantasy Class" ships ) is my favorite spot, and I spend lots of time there, listening to music, and just relaxing. I've NEVER seen topless women there. (Yes,,near topless, but not topless.) I have seen topless women around the main pool on the first day of a cruise. I presume they are European, and assume that it's O.K. Not a big deal

When they did have a topless deck around the stack, I'd ALWAYS go up there to check to make sure that the lovely, and talented Mrs. Jones wasn't there. (That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!) :cool:

Almost everyplace is a no topless area, and I never see signs. Like on Main street in my town. You can't walk down the street topless, but I have never saw a sign stating it.

Besides the fact this is Carnival, and anything goes, there are no signs for all kinds of things that are not permitted. Such as no sex on the deck. But it happens, just read the Carnival Boards. Then there are all kinds of signs such as no diving, jumping etc, and watch your kids, and yet, non of those happen, because signs are not read, and whenever you have a sign, than the opposite happens on "your vacation, do what you want".

I wouldn't care if she undid her top, just cover up when you turn over please.

Let's just all be on the safe side and keep it covered... ;)

I've seen plenty around LA beaches, and cheers to those with a confident body image, but it's usually someone you wish you could un-see! LOL
