Krishnan's 6 days trip to Char Dham
Planning of tour to be improved and no adequate information provided by the agent resulting additional cost for staying in Guptkashi. Hotel was changed more than once which was dis appointing. In fact we have to stay with extra beds one day in Rishikesh despite booking for 4 people. At the outset agent has to improve. Just okay with the services. Hotel Heera and their hospitality was good despite their very compact rooms for 4.

However, we recommend you carry warm clothes and sunglasses, no matter how pleasant the weather. While this season is most suitable for visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri must be visited during the end of April since they are located at a much higher altitude. Temperatures fluctuate between 20-35 degrees during this time of the year. Visit the Thomas Cook India website to check out our Char Dham yatra tour packages and Uttarakhand tour packages during this period.

Where the mountains meet the Gods and where prayers are set afloat as flickering lights onto the holy rivers. This is Char Dham where each one of the four abodes brings you closer to the presence of the almighty, one step at a time. Millions of worshippers brave the intense trails leading up to these four heavenly abodes. Be it the vividly painted Badrinath Temple in all its glory on the snow-topped Nikantha or the Kedarnath temple set amidst its snow-covered surroundings.
The Char Dhamyatra pivots around towns and temples such as Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Apart from that, you can also visit Haridwar and Rishikesh. To let you contemplate a little further, here are a few places to visit in 4 Dham on your tour that spells spirituality and peace.
Yamunotri
Rishikesh .
Ring the bell as you enter this temple with the crowd swarming behind you to worship Lord Vishnu and feel it resonate in your soul. Amidst the mountains nestles the Badrinath temple - one of the most sought-after holy sites. Badrinath temple with its grand entrance is bathed with sheets of snow if you visit during the winter. This temple is home to Lord Vishnu and one of the four Char Dham Yatra’s pilgrimage sites. This sacred shrine has visiting hours from 4 am to 10 pm. Rumour also has it that each time a devotee opens the door to the temple; they find a lamp that has been burning continuously for the last six months. If you are interested in purchasing some sacred souvenirs, you must head to Salagram Sila - a sacred stone of Lord Vishnu. Here you will get religious books, ancient relics and holy threads.
Perched on the foothills of the Himalayas, Kedarnath is one of the four Char Dham Yatra’s pilgrimage centres in India. Situated amidst snow-covered mountains, the Kedarnath temple welcomes its devotees after an adventurous trek to Lord Shiva’s shrine. Moreover, the green meadows and lush forests located at the lower ranges of the Himalayas only enhance its charm. The 14-kilometre trek to the Kedarnath temple starts with Gauri Kund, another mythological location before snaking through the mountains with breathtaking vistas at every turn.
Resting along the banks of the Yamuna river, the Yamunotri temple is the least visited of all the Char Dham temples. Take a rejuvenating dip and wash away all your inhibitions in several hot springs located at the Yamunotri Temple. Watch other pilgrims cook potatoes and steamed rice that is offered in religious ceremonies or choose to help them fulfil their duties. The hike to this stairway to heaven commences at the quaint hamlet of Janki Chatti. If you find the trek difficult you can always take a pony ride to the top.
Identified as one of the holiest sites in the country, this town is the starting point for the trek to the source of the mighty Ganga. Make your way to Gangotri Village to purchase some woollen clothes, souvenirs and mementoes to take back home.
A yogic hub, this destination is a must visit on every pilgrim’s list. You hear it before you see it, with chanting from pandits lending serene background music to the surroundings. Watch devotees whisper prayers of hope under their breath, as set float their diyas onto the holy river. This holy hamlet feels divine. After all, it's one of the few places that will take you the closest to the presence of God.
Haridwar
If you cannot reach the stairway to heaven, don’t worry, you can take the gateway to the Gods in Haridwar instead. With pandits chanting holy words and priests holding large censers in their hands, you will be awestruck with the spirituality of this city. It is lit up with the piety of a thousand devotees and the sparkle in their eyes as they set their diyas adrift on the holy river in the hopes of having a conversation with God. Har ki Paudi is deemed to be the most historically significant temple in the city. This temple is famous for its Ganga aarti, with thousands of devotees attending every day. It is known to be the exact spot where the Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the planes.
The Uttarakhand Char Dham, also known as the Chota Char Dham Yatra, is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage circuits in India. The significance of Char Dham Yatra is massive, especially for the true-to-the-core devotees. These four sites, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, which are located in the state’s Garhwal region, are some of the most visited spiritual destinations in the country for a variety of reasons. The general belief is that everyone should go on the Char Dham yatra at least once in their lifetime to attain God's blessings. It is also believed that visiting these sites will help individuals wash away their sins and open the gates of salvation. But a lot more goes into driving millions of devotees to these holy pilgrimage sites around the year. Each of the Yatra points has its own significance and value per the ancient Hindu mythology and legends. This is why it is important to learn about its history and significance before going on the yatra. To begin with, the sequence of the Char Dham Yatra should be in a clockwise direction. So, the first site devotees visit for the yatra is Yamunotri Dham, followed by Gangotri Dham, then Kedarnath Dham, and finally ending at Badrinath Dham. The reason for this is associated with the magnitude of the sites themselves.
The Chota Char Dham significance is massive for individuals of the Hindu faith, and it is necessary to learn about them prior to the yatra. Here is the importance of Char Dham Yatra according to each pilgrimage point in Uttarakhand
- Importance of Yamunotri Dham
- Importance of Gangotri Dham
- Importance of Kedarnath Dham
- Importance of Badrinath Dham
Importance of Yamunotri Dham:
To begin explaining the importance of Char Dham Yatra, let us start with the first destination of this holy pilgrimage circuit, the Yamunotri Dham. The main centre of this site is the Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, also known as the Lady of Life. The sacred Yamuna River also originates in Yamunotri. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Yamuna was the twin sister of the God of Death, Yama. On the occasion of “Bhai Dooj”, Yama made a promise to Yamuna that whoever takes a dip in the waters of the Yamuna River will therefore attain salvation and not experience the sufferings of Yamlok (Hell). Hence, to this day, millions of devotees from across the world visit this Dham to take a dip into the holy river with the belief that it will wash away their sins and shield them against an unfortunate demise. They also visit the holy shrine of Yamuna to pay their respects and seek her blessings. Hence, the religious importance of the site adds to the overall Char Dham Yatra significance for Hindus in India.
Importance of Gangotri Dham:
After visiting the Yamunotri Dham, devotees move towards the Gangotri Dham, placed at an elevation of 3,400 m above sea level. It is located at Gomukh, which is the sacred source of the Ganga River. According to Hindu mythology, after numerous failed attempts, King Bhagirath was able to bring Ganga from heaven to earth through years of deep meditation at Gangotri. He was the grandson of King Anshuman and was able to impress Lord Shiva through his determination, who released three streams on earth, one of which came to be known as Bhagirathi. Similar to the Yamuna River, the Ganga River is also referred to as one of the holiest rivers flowing through India and a source of purity. So, numerous visitors take a tip in the river water to wash away their past misdeeds and embrace holiness. Devotees also visit the Ganga Temple to ask for holy blessings and visit the rock called “Bhagirathi Shila”, which is believed to be the place where King Bhagirath meditated. Another factor that adds to the importance of the site is the special puja conducted both at the river bank and within the shrine. Hence, the Gangotri Dham is a prominent holy location that increases the significance of Char Dham Yatra.
Importance of Kedarnath Dham:
Before expanding on the topic of “Kedarnath importance”, individuals must know that it is the third destination of the holy yatra. With the backdrop of snow-clad mountain ranges, it is one of the most beautiful and sacred pilgrimage sites in India. This shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the God of Destruction, and is a part of the 12 Jyotirlingas, which is one of the main points under the topic of “Kedarnath significance for Hindus”. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to relieve themselves from the culpability of killing their friends and blood relatives following the Kurukshetra battle. But Lord Shiva refused their request, assumed a disguise of a buffalo and started to roam within the Garhwal Himalayas. When he was discovered by the Pandavas, he went on to hide himself underground. Bhima, one of the five Pandavas, tried to stop him but failed to do so, and Lord Shiva disappeared, only leaving his hump behind. It is now worshipped as Kedarnath Temple, which is a part of the “Panch Kedar”. Some legends suggest that the original temple was built by Pandavas and the current temple was founded by Adi Shankaracharya. These are the factors behind the significance of Kedarnath Dham, and devotees from various corners of the world visit the temple to seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
Importance of Badrinath Dham:
The next stoppage point of the holy Yatra following Kedarnath is the Badrinath Dham. It is not only the final destination of the Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra but also a part of the Bada Char Dham Yatra. Hence, the significance of Badrinath Dham to individuals of the Hindu faith is immense. Located on the River Alakananda’s left bank, this Dham is nestled at an elevation of 3,133 metres. According to Hindu mythology, when Dharma’s two sons, Narayan and Nar, were looking for suitable places to set up their hermitage in the Himalayas, they came along Vridha Badri, Yog Badri, Bhavisya Badri and Dhyan Badri. These four sites are a part of the holy Panch Badri. Finally, they reached a place behind river Alakananda, which they named “Badri Vishal''. The Badrinath Dham is dedicated to the deity Lord Vishnu, known as the protector and preserver of the divine Hindu Trinity. To add to the giant pool of Badrinath significance, the temple is one of Lord Vishnu’s 108 Divya Desams and a part of the Panch Badri.
Another factor that highlights the role of Badrinath in Char Dham Yatra importance is that it was the location where Adi Shankaracharya achieved salvation, freeing himself of the process of reincarnation. Individuals on the Chhota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit end their Yatra by visiting this Dham to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu and achieve ‘Moksha”.
- Kafuli/Kapaa - Do not miss out on this bowl of piping, hot spinach curry during your Char Dham tour, especially if you are visiting 4 Dham during the winter season. This could probably be Popeye the sailor man’s favourite dish! You could savour this dish in a bowl, just like soup or maybe with some steamed jeera rice.
- Chainsoo - If you are missing home and longing for simple Ghar ki dal and roti, then you must try Chainsoo, a dish made of a variety of pulses with spices added to it. Local spices give this dish an earthy flavour and it tastes best with the Indian flatbread – roti.
- Phaanu - If you are looking for a soupy meal that will warm your soul, do try Phaanu. Prepared from a variety of lentils and garnished with fresh coriander, this dish is best had with some steamed rice.
On your Char Dham yatra, there is a range of things to do and see. Our Char Dham yatra tour packages make sure they capture each experience, so you make the most out of your trip. The Mata Murti temple is visited during Ashtami and Chaturdashi. It is open from 6 am to 6 pm. If you want to get your adrenaline pumping in Badrinath, head to the Bheem Pul. Fierce waters gush beneath you, pounding the rocks as you stand on the natural stone bridge between the mountains, to cross the Saraswati River.
It is no secret that Uttarakhand is the land of Gods. Where you can have a long due conversation with yourself as you destress and detox. Head to Haridwar, with pandits chanting holy words that seem like music to your ears. Har Ki Paudi is identified as the most historically prominent temple in the city. Attend the Ganga Aarti here, where thousands of devotees can be seen every day.

The essence of Rishikesh lies in the Lakshman Jhulla Lakshman Jhulla market located in Tapovan. From here you can take home with you religious and historical antiques at reasonable prices. You will also find funky and trendy accessories and jewellery. Being a major centre for yoga, this hamlet also has yoga gear which you can purchase at unbelievable prices if you are a pro at bargaining! You will also get ayurvedic medicines, perhaps the only thing that could beat your Nani ke nuskhe. Nostalgia might just hit you hard as you enter the music shop and look at a collection of CDs and cassettes stacked together. You can head to the Rishikesh main market if you are looking for clothes. Char Dham Yatra – Uttrakhand – How to plan a trip [Complete Travel Guide]
Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is collectively referred to as the Chota Char Dham of India. The four Abodes in Himalayas includes four holy shrines of Hindus: Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus. Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime.
One the most popular pilgrimage route, Chota Char Dham Yatra is undertaken by quarter of a million of devotees each year paying homage. With the hope of eliminating all sins to attain salvation by the blessings of the Lord.
In fact, devotees visit the shrines not only from India, but, also there is immense growing popularity among foreign tourists, visiting out of curiosity and wanting to learn more about India, its culture.
Given the stunning beauty, the Himalayan charm, dense forests, large valleys and epic nature all around – Char Dham Yatra makes for the most majestic of journeys to partake in.
Let's quickly dive into the details:
About Char Dham Yatra
As a brief, Kedarnath is devoted to Lord Shiva while Badrinath is devoted to Lord Vishnu. Yamunotri and Gangotri are dedicated to Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna rivers respectively.
Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand can be covered in one go, taking about 10-15 days (depending on your schedule). In fact, you may also get helicopter services to cover Char Dham in a matter of two days.
History of Char Dham
The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century. Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year.
However, it should be noted that during Winter season all Char dham are closed for Six month due to Heavy snowfall all temples are inaccessible. The Gods and Goddesses are moved to their “Winter abodes” during this time.
Opening and Closing Dates of the Yatra
Usually, the period for partaking in this Yatra is from April End – October End. However, each year the Uttarakhand Government announces the dates of the opening and closing of the circuit. In the winter times, the 4 shrines are moved to their winter sojourns.
Namely, Ukhimath, Joshimath, Mukhba and Kharsali for the deities of Kedarnath, Badrinath , Gangotri and Yamunotri respectively. The gates to all these winter Dhams remain open for devotees – thus, technically you may visit the shrines all year long (albeit not in the same locations)
How to get there
In order to embark upon the Chota Char Dham Yatra, you’ll need to reach Haridwar. Here’s how.
Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the nearest airport. In fact, from here, you may even take up a Helicopter service to Kedarnath and Badrinath. These are available from Delhi, Dehradun, Phata, Augustmuni and Gauchar near Rudraprayag and Dehradun.
Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kotdwar and Dehradun are well connected to major cities of India by Railway Network. From here you can get bus or you can hire taxi as well towards your onwards journey.
Char Dham Yatra Route
As per the Hindu Mythology, the auspicious and ever-so-important Yatra should be undertaken from west to east, in order to cover the holy places in a clockwise manner. Thus, it means that you should start off your pilgrimage from Yamunotri, then proceed to Gangotri, Kedarnath and finish your journey at Badrinath.
About the Char Dham Yatra
While the journey is a beautiful one, I want to highlight the importance of each of the shrines.
Yamunotri Dham
The original source of Yamuna River, Yamunotri is surrounded by stunning high forested peaks and a large valley. Yamuna is known to be the second largest and one of the holiest river in India after Ganga. As per the Hindu mythology, it is believed that Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (God of Son) & the sister of Yama (God of Death).
It is believed that you will be washed of your sins when you visit Yamunotri. Given the tough journey, faith, and transcendent significance of the river motivates the pilgrims to their destination. Distinctive features of Yamunotri include hot springs where raw rice is cooked and turned into prasad. Also, there many holy shrines, ashrams and temples in and around the Dham.
Yamunotri is located at an altitude of 3293 mts, in the Garhwal region and situated about 40 km away from Barkot in Uttarkashi. While the actual source of Yamuna lies in the Yamunotri Glacier, at an elevation of 6,387 mts near Bandarpunch Peaks.
Other places of interest nearby include Surya Kund, Divya Shila, Janki Chatti, Hanuman Chatti, Saptarishi Kund Lake etc.
History and Importance of Yamunotri
The temple at Yamunotri is dedicated to goddess Yamuna. It should be noted that the main Deity of the temple is made up of Black marble. Built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century, the current temple was created after the previous one was destroyed by climate activity.
The Yamunotri Shrine was originally constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal on left seashore of Yamuna River.
Gangotri Dham
Unarguably the most important river for Hindus, Ganga is the most sacred river in the world. Gangotri is one of the origin sources of Ganga (Ganges). It should be noted here that the foremost source of the river is “Gaumukh” – a glacier located 19 km from the Gangotri temple.
Dheeraj Sharma
Gangotri is located on the banks of Bhagirathi river at an altitude of 3100 mts. Gangotri is the starting point of Ganga. It should be noted that the river Bhagirathi attains the name Ganga from Devprayag. This is where Bhagirathi meets with Alaknanda to form Ganga.
The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya (usually in the month of May) and closes down on Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Duj (usually falling in October/ November).
Ganga water is the purest form of blessing and is used in Poojas (prayers) or offering in temples. In fact, pilgrims carry the auspicious water from here as a way to carry Prasad and blessings for future prayers.
Gangotri is the home place of many varieties of flora and fauna. There are several temples in Gangotri where visitors can learn the history behind the creation of Ganga River.
History and Importance of Gangotri Temple
As per Hindu Mythology, Ganga was born as a result of prize given Shivji to king Bhagirath for his penance. However, owing to her superiority as well as the fact that Earth would be overwhelmed if Ganga came down in full force, Shivji caught her in his locks.
There is a sacred stone near the Gangotri temple that denotes the place where Ganga first came down to earth in the river form. This is why Ganga is also called by the name of Bhagirathi (i.e. the daughter of Bhagirath).
The Gangotri temple in its present form was constructed by Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th Century. It is believed that at the time of construction of the current temple, the Gaumukh glacier was present here – however it has receded to its current location due to global warming and climate change.
Kedarnath Dham
One of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, Kedarnath temple is located on the bank of Mandakini river at an altitude of 3584 mts. Historically, this region was known as “Kedar Khand”. Kedarnath temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shivji in India.
Flanked by breathtaking snow-capped peaks, Kedarnath is the most remote locations on the Char Dham Yatra. The town itself is stunningly beautiful and the scenic beauty tends to attract a lot of pilgrims, with huge crowds flocking the region in the summer months of May and June. Also, the Kedarnath trek is quite famous amongst the trekker tribe.
It should be mentioned here that the 2013 floods did huge damage to the region. In fact, the fact that the temple is still standing has been the source of massive reverence. Prior to the 2013 floods, Gaurikund was the last destination on Kedarnath route, but with the floods in 2013, a new trekking route is under process.
This route will be approximately 21 kms of trekking, which will either start from Sonprayag or Sitapur. As of now, helicopter is the best way to reach Kedarnath temple.
Currently, only accommodation near the dham are campsites due to the excessive damage from the floods.
In terms of thingy to do nearby, you may visit Chorabari tal (Gandhi Sarovar), Vasukital, Gaurikund, Trijuginarayan, Ukhimath, Panch Kedar, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Chopta, DeoriaTal and Rudranath etc.
History and Importance of Kedarnath Temple
Dedicated to incarnations of Shivji, Kedarnath is named after King Kedar, a ruler from Satya Yuga. This is the place where Shivji is said to have absolved the Pandavas from killing their own cousins Kauravas in the Mahabharata.
In fact, there is an interesting story behind the town and its temple. According to the Puranas, the Pandava brothers did a major penance in Kedarnath to please Shivji.
Earlier the temple was built by Pandavas and Present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. Just Behind the temple you will see samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya.
Badrinath Dham
Badrinath is an important holy shrine for Vaishnavites and is one of the 108 divya desams incarnation of Vishnuji. Also, Badrinath the town is part of Panch Badri temples which include Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with Badrinath temple.
And, Badrinath is situated at an altitude of about 3415 mts in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. Located in Silent valley of Garhwal, Badrinath lies on the shores of Alaknanda river. The town is known for its stunning beauty, pleasant weather, thick forest cover as well as the beautiful views of snow clad mountains along the holy river flowing through the surrounding green valley.
Badrinath is the home to many celebrations including Kedar-Badri Utsav, Janam-ashtami, Mata Mruti Ka Mela. Nearby places that should be visited include Panch Prayag temple, Badhri Naryanan Temple, Vasudhara Falls, Hot Geyser (tapt kunds or hot water springs), Bheem Pul, Mana Village etc.
History & Importance of Badrinath Temple
The original Badrinath temple was built Adi Shankaracharya, who initially discovered the Badrinarayan idol in the Alakananda River. It was he who moved the shrine into the hot water springs of Tapt Kund. Due to natural time taking course, there was a need for a new temple to be built.
The Present temple was built by King of Garhwal in 16th century. The stunning ornament stones, traditional carving, pillar designs will take your breath away at the first look! In terms of the architecture, the appearance is similar to the Buddhist Vihara temple.
In the Satya yuga, Shivji meditated here for thousands of years while Goddess Lakshmi provided shadow over her husband in the form of a Badri tree. So, this is how the place for its name for Badrinath!
In fact, the entire valley surrounding Kedar-Badri was said to be the home of Shivji. This is the reason Badrinath becomes a main-stay around Mahashivratri when the festival is celebrated with full pomp-and-circumstance.
Itinerary for the Chota Char Dham Yatra
Day 1: delhi to haridwar.
Start your journey towards Haridwar from Delhi, covering 210 KMs in 6 hours’ worth of driving time. I would suggest reaching Haridwar as early as possible. This will leave you ample time to explore one of the holiest places in India – the gateway to the God and one of the oldest living world cities.
One of the MUST DO things (apart from exploring the many lanes and paths of the city) includes the magic of the evening Aarati (worship with fire) wherein all lamps are lit and prayers are offered at the Har ki Pauri (Steps of God). For Hindus, a dip in the auspicious Ganges leads to a washing off of all sins and a source of attaining liberation from the endless cycle of death and rebirth.
Day 2: Haridwar to Barkot
Start your day off as early as possible and after a dip in Ganga, you start your journey towards the first dham – Yamunotri – daughter of Surya & sister of Yam. Today’s travel towards Barkot will take you about 10 hours, covering 200 KMs.
Barkot is situated at an elevation of 1220 mts. Do remember to explore the little hamlet, even though the journey of your day today would be quite long. Modern civilization has not quite touched the place and you’ll be drawn in by the rituals and the ways of the city.
The surrounding views are insanely mesmerizing and include peaks of Bandar Punch that are snow-capped throughout the year. I suggest this as an overnight stop on your way to Yamunotri to keep you fresh and feeling alive throughout the journey! The views will forever be embedded in your memories, trust me.
Day 3: Barkot / Yamunotri/ Barkot
After an early breakfast, you’ll start your journey towards the first dham in earnest. With 36 KMs of driving along with a 7 KM trek, you’ll reach Yamunotri in around 5 hours today. If you plan on hiring a horse or a Doli, that will cost you anywhere from INR 1000 – 2500.
However, do note these rates may vary depending on when in season you visit and the number of tourists at that particular time.
Yamunotri was the home of sage, Asit Muni. Yamuna is the daughter of the Surya (God of Sun) and Sarayyu. Her brother is Yama (God of Death). It is believed that Yama would not torment any individual at the time of death who bathes in Yamuna, his sister. It is Yamuna, holder of infinite love and compassion, who can grant us freedom from even death, in the realm of her elder brother.
After having visited the shrine and nearby places, you’ll return to Barkot for your onward journey.
Day 4: Barkot / Gangotri
This day begins with an early morning as well. If you’re not completely fit – you might feel fatigued from the previous day’s journey. Hence, I do recommend you get to bed early to get full night’s rest for your day today!
Today’ you’ll be covering 210 KMs in about 9 hours’ worth of driving time. Do remember to take breaks. I particularly recommend stopping over at Gangnani – a hot water spring enroute. If you learn by 6 AM, you should hope to arrive at Gangotri by 3:30 PM.
Today is the day you visit your 2nd Dham, Gangotri, the origin of Ganga and seat of the goddess Ganga. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors, following his severe penance to Shivji spanning several centuries.
There is no other river as closely associated with Hinduism as Ganga. Respected since time immemorial as THE spiritual purifier, giver of health and prosperity – Ganga is part of the country’s religious fabric.
Visiting Gangotri is truly among the most blessed experiences of a Hindu’s life; and as uplifting and inspiring for any traveler.
Day 5 – Gangotri /Uttarkashi
Today, you may start your journey relatively leisurely. Waking up in Gangotri is an experience unto itself and should be treated as such. There are not many places where you feel peace quite like you’d here!
Today, after taking in the experience as much as you can – you start your journey towards Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi literally translates to the Banaras (i.e. Kashi) of the North. Today’s journey will take you 4 hours to cover 95 KMs.
Uttarkashi, a small town at an elevation of 1588 mts, is situated between Varuna and Ashi rivers. These rivers slow into the Bhagirathi from either side of the town. Given its similarities to Kashi – the city enjoys similar ghats and temples like the city it is named after.
When you’re here, do remember to visit the Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Shivji. Other temples you must visit include Annapurna Temple and Bhairav Temple. Also, it is believed that in the second millennium of Kaliyug (the current ongoing yuga), Kashi (i.e. Banaras) will be submerged, and Uttarkashi will replace it as an important religious centre.
Day 6: Uttarkashi / Sitapur
Another day when you will have an early wakeup call & breakfast. Today you’ll be reaching your destination of Sitapur, covering 212 KMs worth of journey in around 10 hours of driving time. Sitapur is situated at an elevation of roughly 1820 mts, just 7 kms from Gaurikund and 26 kms from Guptkashi.
Sitapur is situated only 2 kms from Son Prayag, lying at the confluence of Basuki and Mandakini rivers. It is said that a mere touch of the holy water from this holy site of Son Prayag helps the individual to attain the “Baikunth Dham”.
Another religiously important location is the Triyuginarayan – the marriage place of Lord Shiva and Parvati. This is situated at a distance of 14 kms by bus and 5 kms on foot from here.
In order to reach Kedarnath – you’ll be trekking from here. However, do remember to bathe in the hot water pond here and visit the Gauri Devi temple. This is the place where Goddess Parvati meditated to attain Lord Shiva.
Day 7: Sitapur/ Gaurikund/ Kedarnath
Today is going to be a long day with lots of physical activity! After an early breakfast you’ll proceed to Gaurikund, taking you two hours of driving time. Do remember to pack lunch and carry sufficient water for the day today.
From Gaurikund, you will start your trekking in earnest. Overnight, you’ll be staying in Kedarnath (mostly camping accommodations are available since the destruction of 2013 floods). Overall, you’ll be covering 32 Kms from Sitapur to Gaurikund by driving and then another 14 KMS of trek. This entire journey will take you about 9 hours in total.
The third dham is possible the remotest dhams you’ll be covering. Located in Shivji’s own home – the shrine is majestic and the natural setting is breath-taking.
From the towering mountains covered in snow, the plummeting streams and rivers, and lush green meadows and forests — and the arduous trek that gets you to it, serve to further cement the deep-rooted faith that this temple inspires!
This site is almost unchanged for centuries and has a spiritual energy of its own! For the devotees of Shivji, this is the last frontier, the ultimate path to salvation!
For the trekking part a Horse & doli are both decent options in case you’re unable to manage the trek. The cost ranges from INR 1000 to 2500. Though these rates are subject to change dependent on the number of pilgrims and the time of your journey during the season.
Day 8: Kedarnath / Rudraprayag
Today, you’ll be moving from Kedarnath to Rudraprayad after an early morning breakfast at Gaurikund. Today’s journey will be 75 KMs along with a 14 Km trek. You should reach Gaurikund by 11 AM and Rudraprayad at 3:30 PM, if you leave from Kedarnath around 6 AM. You will be stopping at Sitapur for lunch.
What we know as Garhwal today was earlier known as the Kedar-Khand in the past. In fact, Puranas will tell you that Kedar-Khan is the abode of God. The scriptures of Ramayana and Mahabharata were scripted here.
Also, named after Shivji (Rudra), Rudraprayag is situated at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, at a distance of 34 kms from Srinagar (Garhwal, UK).
This confluence is particularly beautiful as if the two sisters are embracing each other! Here, it is believed that Narad Muni worshipped Shivji – who appeared here in his Rudra Avatar (incarnation) to bless Narad. The complete area is blessed with enormous natural splendor, places of sacred prominence, lakes and glaciers.
Day 9: Rudraprayag/ Badrinath
Not as early as yesterday – you’ll start your journey towards your final dham – Badrinath. After breakfast, you’ll be travelling a distance of 160 KMs, taking you around 8 hours of driving time to cover the distance! Ensure you leave early enough to reach Badrinath in time for evening Darshan and Pooja at the temple.
Badrinath and its route is a journey of beginning. The pilgrims visiting the spine always mention that the landmarks and vistas continually deliver a fresher view, a diverse feeling, an additional nuance to an experience.
It is said that this is the toughest leg of the journey and often times, it can be unforgiving, but only to a closed minded person. The journey from Rishikesh to Badrinath, as Sir Edmund Hillary rightfully noted in his expeditions, is, in many ways, a journey from the ocean to the sky, as much mental as physical. And another route to heaven – and spiritual liberation.
Day 10: Badrinath / Birhi
Coming to a close for your spiritual awakening – you’ll have a leisurely morning wakeup call and only depart post lunch for Birhi. Today’s journey is 95 KMs, taking you 5 hours to complete.
Day 11: Birhi/Rishikesh
After breakfast at Birhi, proceed to Rishikesh. This journey will take you 160 KMs and 7 hours to complete.
It will be a brilliant idea to also explore Rishikesh while you’re here. Situated in the foothills of Himalayas, has some of the most pleasing views as well as the most soul calming vibes!
With Ganga spreading the happiest of emotions around – Rishikesh truly is one of the most mesmerizing places in the country. Do remember that Rishikesh is a vegetarian city by law, as well as an alcohol-free city.
In terms of places to visit – do remember to check out the oh-so-famous Laxman Jhulla, Ram jhulla and several ghats in and around this holy town.
Day 12: Rishikesh/Delhi
Head on back to your original location! Carry the peace, tranquility and happiness with you for a long time! The peace is quite like no other!

It is believed that this pilgrimage cleanses one's soul and takes one closer to moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death). The yatra typically starts from Delhi and goes clockwise through the four sites. The Char Dham Yatra is considered to be one of the most important pilgrimages in Hinduism. Many Hindus believe that it is mandatory to undertake this yatra at least once in their lifetime. The journey is often undertaken by those who are seeking spiritual enlightenment or who want to absolve themselves of sins.
The Chardham Yatra is an annual Hindu pilgrimage that takes place in the Indian Himalayan region. The four main pilgrimage sites that are visited during the yatra are Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The yatra usually begins on the first day of the Hindu month of Vaishakha (April-May) and ends on the last day of the month of Kartik (November).
The first step in planning your Char Dham Yatra is to decide which of the four dams you would like to visit first. Each Dham has its own unique features and attractions, so it is important to do some research before making your decision. Kedarnath is another popular choice, as it is one of the 12 jyotirlinga temples dedicated to Shiva. It is also located in a stunning setting at the base of the Himalayas. Gangotri is the gateway to the Char Dham Yatra and is considered one of the most sacred sites in Hinduism. It is here that the River Ganges originates, and it is also home to a number of temples and other holy sites. Finally, Yamunotri rounds out the Char Dham Yatra circuit. This Dham is situated in a beautiful valley and is home to a number of hot springs which are said to have medicinal properties. So, which dham should you go to first? As per legends Yamunotri is the first dham to visit then Gangotri ,then kedarnath and last the holy shrine of Lord Vishnu, Badrinath.

That said, in general, Kedarnath is considered a safe place to visit. The main concern for visitors to Kedarnath is the potential for natural disasters, such as floods or landslides. However, these are relatively rare occurrences and usually only affect certain areas of the town. If you are planning to visit Kedarnath during the rainy season (July-September), it is important to check the local weather conditions and forecast before making your trip. In terms of crime, Kedarnath is generally a safe place. There are no known areas that are particularly dangerous, and most crimes that do occur are petty crimes such as pickpocketing or theft. As always, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions with your belongings when traveling in any new place.
The hike between Kedarnath and Yamunotri is approximately 18 kilometers. The journey takes around 4 to 6 hours to complete, depending on your pace. The first half of the hike is relatively easy, with a few ups and downs. However, the second half is steeper and more challenging. There are a few ways to make the hike more manageable, such as taking breaks or starting early in the morning.
Yes, it is absolutely safe for a solitary female traveler to visit Chardham. In fact, Chardham is one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations for Hindu women. Every year, thousands of women travel to Chardham to seek the blessings of the deities.
There are a few things that you should keep in mind while traveling to Chardham, though. Firstly, you should dress conservatively and respectfully. Avoid wearing revealing or tight clothes. Secondly, be respectful of religious customs and traditions. Do not enter temples or holy sites if you are not supposed to. Finally, be aware of your surroundings and do not wander off alone in unfamiliar areas. Other than that, there is no reason why you cannot enjoy a safe and fulfilling trip to Chardham as a solo female traveler.
In order to register for the Char Dham Yatra, pilgrims must first obtain a registration form from the official website or from any registered travel agency. The completed form must then be submitted to the office of the Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand along with two recent passport-sized photographs, a photocopy of your ID proof, and the registration fee.
The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuits in India. It comprises of a visit to the four holy sites of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The journey is considered complete only after visiting all the four sites. The traditional way to do the Char Dham Yatra is by undertaking a road trip in your own car. This allows you to have complete control over your schedule and makes it possible to include a number of other sacred sites along the way.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you're planning on doing the yatra in your own car. First and foremost, make sure your vehicle is in good condition and can handle the rough roads of the Himalayas. The journey can be long and tiring, so it's important to have a comfortable car that won't give you any trouble. You should also be prepared for inclement weather, as conditions in the mountains can change very quickly. Another thing to keep in mind is that some of the holiest sites are only accessible by foot. For example, Kedarnath can only be reached after a challenging trek from Gaurikund. If you're not up for such a strenuous journey, you can always hire a local porter or guide to help carry your belongings. Finally, remember that the char Dham Yatra is not just about visiting
The Char Dham Yatra is a pilgrimage to the four sacred sites of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. There is no specific rail package for the Char Dham Yatra, but there are several trains that run to the cities closest to the sacred sites. To make the most of your trip, we recommend booking a tour package that includes transportation and accommodation.
Yes, an RT-PCR negative report is mandatory for the Char Dham yatra. All pilgrims must submit a negative RT-PCR test report before beginning the yatra. The test must be conducted within 96 hours prior to the commencement of the yatra.
There are several ways in which the danger of Covid-19 infection may be reduced during the Chardham Yatra:
1. All pilgrims should get themselves tested for Covid-19 before undertaking the yatra.
2. All pilgrims should follow all the prescribed safety measures during the yatra, including wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing.
3. The number of pilgrims undertaking the yatra should be limited, and only those who are absolutely essential should undertake the journey.
4. Special care should be taken to ensure that all areas visited by pilgrims during the yatra are disinfected regularly.

FAQs about Chardham Tour Packages
Q. What are the opening and closing dates of the Chardham Yatra? A. Prior to going ahead and booking one of the Chardham packages, you need to ascertain what time of the year you are going to be travelling and whether or not the Chardham Yatra is open at that time of the year. Chotta Chardham comprises Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, with the temples marking the sources of Hinduism’s four rivers - Ganga, Yamuna, Mandakini and Alaknanda. The Chardham Yatra remains open between April to the first half of November. Although the specific dates are announced by the state government of Uttarakhand annually and it states the opening and closing dates of the circuit. In the winter, the deities are moved to their winter abode such as Joshimath for Badrinath, Ukimath for Kedarnath, Mukhba for Gangotri and Kharsali for Yamunotri. These winter abodes stay open round the year and you can visit them in that season in case you cannot make it to Chardham within the stipulated period. Q. What is the significance of Gangotri in Chardham Yatra? A. As you go through Chardham tour packages, make sure you have enough time at Gangotri, the source of Hinduism’s holiest river, the Ganges. The holiest shrine in the country, the Gangotri Temple is greatly revered for being the source the Ganga River. Legend has it that the rock on the site acted like a shield to save the planet from the disaster the river could have otherwise wrecked as it poured out of Lord Shiva’s matted locks sitting in Mount Kailash. It is believed that Lord Shiva placed the rock in that position to stop the onslaught of the gushing waters. The temple was built in the 18 th century by Gorkha commander, Amar Singh Thapa. It is Gaumukh which is the original source of the Ganges, but the Gaumukh glacier is about 19 kilometre up ahead of the Gangotri Temple. The temple opens its doors on Akshay Tritiya usually in May and closes down on Bhai Dhuj in late-October or early-November. Pilgrims, believing in Ganga’s healing properties, take back bottles full of the holy water. There are several smaller shrines in the region, each home to a legend on the Ganges’ evolution that has its roots in mythology. Q. What route do you take on the Chardham Yatra? A. All Chardham holiday packages will mention in detail the route you would be taking on your tour of the pilgrimage circuit. Arrive in Haridwar from Delhi and then travel to Barkot. Barkot is the closest source of the Yamuna River, the Yamunotri, around 200 kilometre from Haridwar. Return to Barkot and now head towards Gangotri that is about 210 kilometre away. Proceed from Gangotri towards Uttarkashi, a scenic 95 kilometre drive. Continue to Sitapur from Uttarkashi that is around 212 kilometre away, and from there head to Gaurikund. Gaurikund would be the starting point of your 14 kilometre trek to the shrine of Kedarnath. After paying your respects at the Kedarnath Temple, continue to Rudraprayag that is about 75 kilometre away and from there proceed to Badrinath. Badrinath is about 160 kilometre from Rudraprayag. Visit the shrine and further arrive in Birhi, about 95 kilometre away. From Birhi Rishikesh is around 160 kilometres. Take a cab to get into Haridwar from Rishikesh and further to your onward destination. Q. Is Chardham yatra booking availabe in 2023? A. All vaccinated tourists will be allowed for Chardham Yatra from 14 May 2023. Q. What is the best time to go on a Chardham tour? A. The Chota Chardham circuit created in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya comprises Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. April to June is the best time to visit Chardham as the weather remains pleasant and you can do with some layering, although you would need sweaters after sunset as the temperatures drastically plummet. You must avoid a trip to Chardham in monsoon or winter when it gets very cold and the rains making the treks and hikes extremely treacherous. Q. Which are the places included in a Chardham trip? A. While the Chardham yatra involves Badrinath, Dwarka, Rameswaram and Puri, the Chota Chardham includes a visit to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedarnath being the abode of Lord Shiva, Badrinath that of Vishnu, Gangotri Temple near which is the source of the Ganga River and Yamunotri Temple, a temple built on a site which is close to the source of the Yamuna River. Q. What will be the route taken on a Chardham tour? A. You will begin from Haridwar and go to Barkot, Barkot is about 200 kilometre away and close to it is the source of Yamuna, Yamunotri. Despite calamities, Uttarakhand decides no cap on char dham tourists
The yatra that starts in May continues till the first week of September
Despite multiple landslides that have blocked the route for pilgrims, the Uttarakhand government has decided that there will be no cap on the number of pilgrims visiting the dhams till September first week.
In a meeting held with purohits from the teerths, officials, hotel association members, tour operators, transporters and trade associations, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that registrations will be permitted on the spot as well. “There will be no limit to the number of such registrations,” he said. These registrations are in addition to the online registrations that are mandatory for the yatra.
The yatra that starts in May continues till the first week of September when the temperatures fall and the deities are also carried away from the temples.
Offline registrations will be available at Rishikesh, Haridwar; and at the main stopping points at Badrinath and Kedarnath. The latter means that there is every possibility that the crowds will far outstrip the already stretched carrying capacity of these pilgrimage centres.
As per the latest government bulletin, nine lakh plus tourists have been to Badrinath till August 16. More than one lakh vehicles have reached Badrinath. According to the government’s own numbers, parking facilities available en route the dhams can cater to just over 700 vehicles.
On the night of July 31, the 19 kilometre Kedarnath access road for on-foot pilgrims caved in at 29 places. The pilgrims stranded on the road were rescued by helicopter services and with the help of locals. It took 15 days and 260 labourers to build the tourist path again, and despite that a few places are still not repaired.
The state government has decided that the dhams can accommodate 12,000 pilgrims per day but in 2018, a Supreme Court-appointed committee recommended a daily limit of 5,000 pilgrims to Kedarnath. There is also great discrepancy in the capacity for other teerths including Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
In an investor summit in 2023, the state government had put forth a figure of 15 per cent as the contribution of the tourism sector to the state’s GDP. The state also intends to invite investments worth Rs 20,000 crore in the sector and take up 200 projects in the PPP mode by 2030.
