Located about 12 kms from Airport on the way to Gangtok, this is one of the cleaner hotels in Siliguri. However, it is a bit expensive for what it offers. It has a good restaurant but we were disappointed with our experience as they over charged us.

Excellent, clean hotel to have a comfortable stay in. Staff were helpful and friendly, loved the swimming pool, and the many international tv channels for entertainment. Quality of food and service in the restaurant is excellent as well. Would be perfect if a hairdryer is provided in the room.

We were impressed starting from the hotel lobby itself. It was spacious, staffed well and literally smelt like fresh lemon! We were given free upgrade to superior rooms by the nice receptionist. The rooms were of 5-star grade. Beds and pillows were very comfortable, rooms had all the posted amenities, bathrooms were sparkling clean, all the employees always greeted us with genuine smiles. The central AC worked flawlessly giving us a perfect night’s sleep. We ordered pancakes for breakfast through room service. The portion size of pancakes were tiny compared to the standard size of pancakes and the price paid, but they were delicious. The hotel is just 2-3 minutes walk away from a large and modern shopping mall (Vega Mall). The rooms (319 & 320) were quite and had good sound-proof windows. We’ll definitely stay here again!

We stayed at the Central Courtyard Boutique Resort on the way to Darjeeling. We arrived late and left fairly early. The staff were teriffic and very helpful. They arranged a private taxi to take us to Darjeeling and the restaurant provided us with a light meal before bed. Our taxi from the airport had a few difficulties finding the hotel (but that appears to happen alot in India). There were a few shops and markets nearby. As a short stopover, you couldn't ask for much better.
Amazing. Its the best hotel in Siliguri. Go for it.

The photos are very deceptive. The location is good but that's about it. The rooms were to-do. The linen was torn and dirty looking. The pillows were filthy. The bathroom was awful with no running hot water. And there was no toilet paper and dental kit even. We had to take cold showers. The water in the taps was dirty .The breakfast was very limited. Sorry to say, but we would not recommend it to anyone.

I was very pleased during my stay at Hotel Embassy which is a hotel from Summit group of Hotels which has hotels across Sikkim and WB. (something which we came to know later) We were heading to explore Sikkim and wanted to spend one night in Siliguri, thus was looking for a basic hotel. I just booked it on Agoda by going through some reviews and seeing the discount offered. Since the price was quite low we didn't have much expectations however to our surprise out of many hotels we stayed during our 15 day Sikkim and West Bengal, Hotel Embassy turned out to be our one of the finest stay. Especially taking the price into consideration, it was really very pleasant surprise. Hootel: very nicely maintained rooms, nice AC, TV, Bed and more importantly washrooms. Restaurant was well maintained too. Other Big Advantage is HongKong market which is famous for local shopping is just 2 mins. walking. So perfect setup I would say. Only thing, I didnt like is that there is no view from any rooms and Hotel location doesnt appeal one. It's quite odd from outside but once you enter it changes. So I would recommend this for budget travels. Not for honeymoon or Romance though as there is nothing else in Hotel on offer to do (SPA, games etc). Staff was quite responsive and nice too. Thanks Agoda and Embassy!

Central location and just back from Hill Cart Road, quiet. Recent renovations - room was excellent. Friendly, helpful manager. Siliguri gets a bad rap but actually is clean, good roads, OK facilities. This hotel makes a stay pleasant. Location is Hill Cart Road where most hotels are located, 6-7 km fronm NJP Railway Station.

I had stayed in this hotel for one night in Oct,18 in a deluxe room and find the room size and decor very nice. The location is quite good and transportation is easily available once you set your foot out on the street. The breakfast was also quite tasty. Only advise is have your breakfast early or else the food becomes cold and loses its real taste.
However online booking costly compared to walkin

Very new hotel , very clean.Check in was bit disappointing.Had reached the hotel around 10.30 pm and was super tired. The staff made me wait as he was busy over the phone with some " sir " explaining some software. Didn't care to hold the call...Food was also ok.

This is an extremely good value for the money. The staff are eager to please with or without the tipping that seems necessary in many hotels in India. And the restaurant somehow produces fine examples of Indian, Chinese and American/Continental cooking. The single off note was that their card reader couldn't read my international bank card and I had to go to an ATM to get cash out. If that shortcoming could be remedied I don't know what more they could do to improve. Also here's a shout out to Manesh and all the wonderful employees of the Mayor Hotel! You made my stay a memorable one. I hope to see you all again!

We stayed here for one night (room 206) to break our journey on our way back to delhi from gangtok. Someone seems to have constructed this hotel with lots of passion. The hotel had the latest facilities/amenities in rooms and bathrooms like push button to clean room, push button to DND, Jaguar fittings in bathrooms with hair dryer. We ordered snacks in evening and dinner at night. The food was very tasty and cooked to perfection. The buffet breakfast also offered a lot of variety. Its a completely vegetarian hotel. The rooms were also very clean with wooden flooring. The housekeeping and room service very very responsive. While, we booked a taxi from Hotel to Airport (11 kms away), the front office asked us to pay Rs. 600 (which seems to high for 11kms), after negotiating they charged us Rs. 500 (which is again on higher side). We were expecting a good reasonable AC taxi with this price but turned out to be a Maruti Omni wihout AC. Overall, he experience was good.

It is always hard to find a well maintained hotel in India. Sagar was very clean at the beginning but I have to say it has something to work on his cleanness. It is not dirty. But it is easy to find stains on bed sheet and dust on the floor. But after all, Sagar is still a good place to stay.

Hotel Vinayak Inn (not to be confused with Hotel Vinayak a few km east) was quite reasonable for the price. The beds were pretty soft (by local standards at least) and the rooms were nice and clean. The bathroom had a hot water heater that was able to get water hot for the first minute or two of a shower but it got steadily colder afterward. The price was on par with other local 2-star hotels, though we got a nice deal on Agoda which made the place a better value. It was a bit hard to find the place since it is set back off the main street, but it was near the shared taxi stand for trips to Darjeeling and across from the bus and train stations to get anywhere else. It was also nice and quiet compared to places on the main street. We would stay here again if we were passing through Siliguri. The restaurant is a bit pricey and doesn't have very good food. Breakfast options are extremely limited. The restaurant staff is also not very attentive, though they're friendly if you can flag one down. It's also poorly lit. The real unfortunate part about this is that the internet only works down in the lobby or the restaurant, so you might have to spend some time there if you need to access wifi.

Room was okay but no proper room service n room amenities was not catered properly. Toilet is very old n dirty. But the front desk staffs were very helpful n the restaurant is very good but opens very late in the morning.

In the center of all the malls in Siliguri district - takes 5 to 10 mins to travel by electric autos to either vega mall or Cosmos/Bigbazaar. Rooms are spacious, clean and the use of fittings are exceptional for the price range. If you are there to shop or stopping over for a trip to sikkim look no further. This is the best location to stay hands down. City center and other malls are withing 150Rs Ola ride away. Ask for a quiet room as the rooms facing the main sevoke road can get a bit noisy. Other than that you cant go wrong with this hotel. Highly recommended.

Don't stop over in Siliguri unless you really need to - nothing much to recommend the town. You are far better to push straight on to Darjeeling in a jeep from the airport if you arrive at Bagdogra before 3pm. The train to Darjeeling isn't operating (April 2013) and unlikely to do so for some time (landslide damage). If you have to stay in Siliguri, the Barsana is fine, but it's not really a resort. There is no swimming pool or spa.

Amsterdam’s Latest Effort to Fight Excessive Tourism: No New Hotels
The city wants no more than 20 million hotel stays annually. The measure is one of multiple efforts to control the flow of visitors.
By Claire Moses
Amsterdam has been searching for any way to rein in the number of tourists that visit the city every year.
In March of last year, the city launched an ad campaign specifically targeted at British men between 18 and 35, urging them to “stay away.”
In July, the Dutch capital announced it would bar cruise ships from docking in the city center .
The city has also long tried to control the crowds in its red-light district, where rowdy groups of tourists often cause disruptions to local residents. It has added stricter rules about smoking marijuana . It has banned new tourist shops. And still, the people keep coming.
Now, the city — which is as well known for its canals and 17th century art as for its legal sex industry and easy access to marijuana — has taken one more step to further restrict the explosive growth of tourists: It is banning hotels from being built.
“Amsterdam is saying ‘no’ to new hotels,” the City Council said in a statement. “We want to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors,” it added.
Amsterdam, which added that it was seeking to keep hotel stays by tourists to under 20 million per year, saw its highest number of visitors before the pandemic in 2019, when there were 25.2 million hotel stays, according to the city’s data.
Last year, that number was exceeded by tourists staying over in Amsterdam, not including stays in short term rentals like Airbnbs and cruise ships. And the measure also does not take into account daily visitors who do not stay the night.
The ban on new hotels, while sending a clear message about the city’s aim to reduce the number of visitors, is also largely symbolic. The city’s policy on hotel construction was already strict, and there had been only three proposals since 2017 that met Amsterdam’s requirements, according to the city. New hotels that had been approved or were in development — 26 in total — would be allowed to proceed for now.
Under the new rules, a new hotel can only open if another one closes. It also isn’t allowed to add more rooms than were available, according to the city.
“The effect won’t be very big,” said Ko Koens, a professor of new urban tourism at Inholland University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He also said that in the long run, the capping of hotels could make them more expensive to stay at.
While this ban alone would not make a huge dent in the number of visitors to the city, Mr. Koens said, taken together with other initiatives it could make Amsterdam a less-appealing place to visit. But, he said, “For now, visitors don’t seem to mind.”
In total, Amsterdam has nearly 42,000 hotel rooms that can accommodate more than 92,000 people, according to Statistics Netherlands, a governmental institution that compiles data about the country. (In total, the Netherlands has more than 150,000 hotel rooms.)
Amsterdam’s initiatives to rein in tourism have been largely focused on its crowded city center. But as long as Amsterdam’s airport, Schiphol, continues to be a major European hub, it won’t be easy to keep visitors away from the city.
“There are no simple solutions,” Mr. Koens said. “It’s super complex.”
Amsterdam also announced this week it would start cutting the number of river cruises allowed to dock in its waters. In 2023, that number was 2,125. In 2028, the city wants it to be halved, with no more than 1,150. The city predicts that effort could reduce the number of visitors that come into town by 271,000. This proposal, the city said, is to improve the quality of life for residents and to reduce emissions and crowds.
“The balance in the city needs to improve,” Hester van Buren, a deputy mayor who focuses on the city’s port, said in a statement.
Amsterdam isn’t the only major European destination that has been struggling to get a grip on the growing number of tourists. Venice announced it would charge day-tripping visitors 5 euros ($5.33) to enter the iconic streets of its city center on weekends and some holidays from April 25 through mid-July, its busiest season.
Amsterdam, currently in a busy touristic time because of its famous blooming tulips, has not announced a similar measure, but it is likely there will be more efforts and experiments designed to limit visitors — like the hotel ban.
“Without such a stop, Amsterdam’s center would become one big hotel,” Mr. Koens said. “You don’t want that either.”

TUI Taps Into African Tourism With Hotel Push
Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift
April 16th, 2024 at 4:52 PM EDT
TUI is tapping into the booming African tourism market as it spreads its offerings throughout the continent.
Jesse Chase-Lubitz
TUI Group’s hotel division, TUI Hotels & Resorts , said on Tuesday it planned to expand its presence in sub-Saharan Africa, a region with significant tourism potential.
The move comes after years of concentrating on North Africa, where TUI boasts a portfolio of 76 hotels. The new push southwards includes eight new hotels planned for Cape Verde, Gambia, Senegal, Tanzania, and Kenya.
TUI’s Local Partnerships
The expansion is meant to serve a range of target groups, such as vacationers looking for more affordable trips to luxury travelers looking for elevated experiences.
The company said it’s “looking forward to contributing to the development of the African hospitality industry and working together with local communities,” but it didn’t go into detail about how those collaborations would happen, other than to call out TUI’s new hotel brand, The Mora, which is debuting in Zanzibar.
“Our hotel brand TUI Blue, as well as the new brand The Mora, are committed to creating a local touch in their hotel experiences,” a TUI spokesperson said in response to a Skift query. “This can be achieved in many different ways, from local suppliers, e.g. for food-and-beverage, to entertainment from the region or in collaboration with local designers.”
The company says it is collaborating with Sands of Darakasi Resorts Limited to build a TUI Blue hotel in Kenya and that it is looking to partner with other local groups to grow the franchise in the region.
“Independent hotel owners can benefit from our hotel brands, our expertise in operations, and the digital hotel infrastructure,” said a TUI spokesperson.
In East Africa, TUI focuses primarily on Mauritius, Tanzania, and Kenya.
There are several reasons that tour companies could be drawn to the market now.
“The likely reason that there is greater interest now by TUI in Africa is because [it offers] a low cost for a good product, there’s a greater marketing push from African destination marketing organizations in the European market, and there’s a potential substitution away from perceived risky Middle Eastern destinations because of current conflicts,” said Oliver Martin , Senior Director at Skift Advisory .
The Booming Africa Travel Market
TUI is also tapping into a young market. In 2023, The World Travel and Tourism Council projected that travel and tourism could boost the continent’s economy by $168 billion in the next 10 years.
There is particular potential for internal travel on the continent.
Domestic tourism in South Africa took off in 2023 , with overnight trips climbing by 31% for the first four months compared to 2022, and domestic travel spending increasing by 41%.
For now, domestic tourism is essential to the industry’s growth due to high travel costs and poor transportation networks within and between countries. The continent is also experiencing an unprecedented boom in its middle class, with numbers tripling to more than 310 million over the past 30 years.
“The push to market to and engage African nationals is relatively new,” says Martin. He attributes it to COVID, the rising middle class, and how difficult it can be to get visas outside Africa.
“However, Africa is by no means new to the European market,” he adds. “There is a long history of charter and all-inclusive European travel to East Coast Kenya destinations and Tanzania.”
TUI plans on taking advantage of this growing internal market, but also has its eyes on bigger markets. “South Africa and Kenya are strong local markets,” TUI’s spokesperson said. “But of course the hotels will also attract guests from Europe. At the same time, we are increasing our sales activities in Asia, e.g. China.”
