Belize is home to the world's second largest living barrier reef. Its tropical islands are lined with tall coconut trees and surrounded by endless miles of coral reef. Jacques Cousteau immortalized the famous Blue Hole for its unique underwater stalagmites, and today it remains one of the most beautiful diving and snorkeling sites in the world. Experience this beauty with our Belize Eco Tours.

Inland you'll find endless emerald-green rivers, home to an astounding number of bird and wildlife species. Colorful birds come to Belize's tropical lagoons by the tens of thousands to nest. Primates of 2 species forage amongst mountains wrapped in colossal trees and forests carpeted with dazzling flowers and lush tropical foliage. Hidden in their midst are magnificent ruins of an ancient Mayan civilization, as well as a friendly melting-pot of cultural richness that combines true frontier-town thrill with modern environmental consciousness.

Travelers will find a time-locked land that still belongs to the rainforest and the sea, not to man; an untamed land that will touch you with awe and leave you gasping in wonder.

We believe that travel must leave a positive impact, benefiting both the delicate ecosystems we explore and the local communities who call them home. When you choose Uncharted Jewel Belize, you choose a partner who shares your values.

Here’s how we ensure your wildlife encounters are both thrilling and sustainable:

1. Small-Group Experiences: Intimate and Respectful

Why Choose Uncharted Jewel Belize

We shun the crowded, impersonal approach of many tour operators. Instead, we focus on small-group wildlife tours that minimize disturbance to the natural environment. This approach allows for more intimate observations of animals in their natural habitat, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Belize’s biodiversity. Less noise and disruption mean happier animals and a more authentic experience for you.

2. Knowledgeable and Ethical Guides

Why Travel with Uncharted Jewel Belize

Our local guides are more than just wildlife spotters; they are conservation ambassadors. Their deep understanding of animal behavior and the fragile ecosystems they inhabit ensures a respectful and educational experience. They know the safe distances to keep, the subtle signs to look for, and how to interpret animal behaviors without causing stress or disrupting their natural routines.

3. Supporting Conservation Projects

Explore Dangriga Like Never Before

A portion of your tour fees goes directly towards supporting conservation initiatives in Belize. Whether it’s protecting vital jaguar corridors, rehabilitating injured wildlife, or monitoring endangered species populations, we believe in actively giving back to the wild places we cherish. Your journey doesn’t just create memories – it becomes a force for good.

4. Leave No Trace: Minimizing our Footprint

We adhere to strict ‘leave no trace’ principles. We pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, and strive to leave every environment as pristine as we find it. Our guides will educate you on how you can minimize your own impact, empowering you to be an eco-conscious traveler.

  • Howler Monkeys: Rainforest Rockstars:  Their booming calls echoing through the jungle canopy are an unforgettable soundtrack to any Belize adventure. Seek out these charismatic primates on a guided hike, marveling at their social interactions and acrobatic antics.
  • Whale Sharks: Gentle Giants of the Sea:  During spring and early summer, the waters around the Gladden Spit Marine Reserve turn into a gathering place for the largest fish in the world. Snorkel alongside these gentle giants in a strictly regulated environment that protects their well-being.

Our commitment to sustainability extends to our carefully selected accommodations. We partner with eco-lodges nestled harmoniously within their natural surroundings, supporting local businesses that share our values. Wildlife & Scenic River Tours

Belize jungle river and inland tours.

Belize is well known for the conservation of its vast rainforest. There is no better way to delve into this untouched jungle than on our Wild and Scenic River Tours. On these river tours and with the help of our knowledgeable guides there is an increased possibility of spotting numerous wildlife species. Be with animals in their natural habitat as you flow around our winding rivers.

Belize Monkey River Tour

Monkey River Tour

  • À la carte Tour

An enticing tour of Monkey River awaits

Travel the Monkey River via boat to explore this extensive mangrove and wildlife habitat for monkeys, manatees, dolphins, tropical birds, and the occasional crocodile.

Begin your tour by riding through a lagoon surrounded by red mangroves along the coast of Belize. Here, be on the lookout for endangered manatees. As you reach the mouth of the Monkey River, your guide will point out numerous iguanas, turtles, and birds as you motor slowly up the river. Don’t be startled when you hear the bizarre sounds of the Black Howler Monkey as they communicate with each other to declare their territory. Nothing you read could ever prepare you for hearing these monkeys for the first time; you just have to experience it!

This tour is included as an option in the Belize Eco-Explorer Add-On .

Venture deeper into the jungle in the hopes of seeing the howler monkeys close up. Learn about the different plant and tree species as your guide leads the way along the nature trail (sometimes through water) further away from the river. The sound of a troop of howler monkeys as they burst out in a raucous chorus will tingle the hair on the back of your neck as you move along. It’s hard to believe that an animal that weighs only 30 pounds can sound as big as an elephant.

As your tour comes to an end, return to the mouth of the river and stop in at Monkey River Village for a genuine Creole lunch. After lunch, board the boat for your return.

Timetable:  24 hours noticed required Departure Time:  7:00am Return Time:  4:00pm Travel Time:  60 minutes each way Included:  transportation, certified guide, lunch, and taxes & fees

Inland Blue Hole and The Belize Zoo

Discover the sapphire waters of the inland blue hole.

Start your day off by driving to the Belize Zoo to enjoy a close-up view of our local fauna in their natural surroundings which include over 150 animals such as jaguars, monkeys, toucans, scarlet macaws, tapirs, snakes, and many more. Feel free to take pictures and ask our professional tour guides any questions you may have.

Proceed to the Blue Hole National Park along the Hummingbird Highway on your way back to Hopkins. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the sapphire blue waters of the Inland Blue Hole, a sinkhole fed by an underground river. Upon arriving, take a short 15-minute hike to witness the bright hues of the sinkhole piercing through the green foliage. Beams of sunlight penetrate the thick jungle canopy above and reflect off the glass-like surface of the water. Birds are often seen resting on the over-hanging vines, specifically the jacamars and blue-crowned marmots. Look out for a variety of hummingbirds like the scarlet-rumped tanager and listen for the nightingale wren.

This sinkhole was formed by the collapse of an underground limestone cave. The pool itself lies at the bottom of this large depression in the jungle. From ground level it drops about 100 feet to the surface of the water and after which the water drops to 25 feet into an underground cave system. A thrilling yet refreshing swimming experience, you don’t want to miss visiting the Inland Blue Hole!

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

The lagoons, creeks, logwood swamps, broadleaf forests, and marshes of the Crooked Tree Sanctuary cover over 16,400 acres and are the home to countless and thousands of birds.

They include; Vermillion Flycatchers, Fork-tailed Flycatchers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-Tailed Kites, Hawks, Laughing Falcons, Meadowlarks, Swallows, and Herons just to name a few.

Crooked Tree is known for its most famous resident, The Jabiru Stork.

In all of Central America, Belize boasts the largest nesting home for these great birds.

In November, Jabiru Storks come to Crooked Tree from Venezuela and Mexico to nest in the tall pines of the lowland pine savannas.

Jabiru Storks are making Belize their home due to losing their habitat in Venezuela and Mexico.

Being one of the tallest birds in the entire Western Hemisphere, the Jabiru stands 5 feet tall and has a wingspan of up to 8 feet.

Its heavy bill is about 12.5 inches long and perfectly designed to catch fish, frogs, and snakes.

Once at the sanctuary, you will be introduced to your good train bird guide, who will elaborate more on the tour.

You will then be placed in a nice small boat with your guide, who will take you all over the lagoon, pointing out every wildlife in sight, particularly the birds.

Bottled water will be available for you.

Please bring along sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera (of course), and also a binocular for better viewing of those amazing birds.

This excitement could last up to three hours after which you will be transported back to your destination of choice.

We highly recommend this tour and genuinely believe that this experience could provide a renewed passion and appreciation for nature and the many wonders it could provide for your enjoyment.

Belize Zoo and Cave Tubing. Our guide was fantastic, we chatted the whole drive and learned about the country. The zoo was fantastic and our guide called out all the animals as he knew all their names and where they hang out. We had a great experience with Mayawalk. Don’t fret emailing them to set up what you want to do!

Belize Zoo Tour

The belize zoo.

The Belize Zoo was founded in 1983 and is unique as far as its contributions to conservation efforts in Belize. The Belize Zoo was founded by Sharon Matola whose diligent efforts to protect and conserve the wildlife of Belize has been highlighted on shows such as Steve Corwin adventures and National Geographic. This is one of the few zoos in the world which works solely with rehabilitated or injured animals that call Belize their home. All the animals at the zoo are kept in their natural habitat and here you can come up close with monkeys, jaguars, tapirs, and rare and endangered birds such as the Scarlet Macaw.

This zoo is very easily accessible and can be toured in a couple of hours as a stop on the way back to San Ignacio from  cave tubing  or a stop on the way to the  International airport .

Wildlife Tours to Belize

Formerly known as British Honduras, Belize has so much to offer the adventurous naturalist traveller.

With its long barrier reef, idyllic islands, unspoilt rainforests, friendly English-speaking population, stable democratic government and exemplary conservation approach to its natural and Maya heritage, Belize was always an oasis of peace in the once volatile Central America region. Indeed, Belize often resembles a Caribbean rather than Central American country.

With roughly 40 per cent of its land classified as protected, the forests of Belize support a wide variety of wildlife including five cat species – margay, jaguarundi, ocelot, puma and jaguar. Bird life is also abundant with over 500 species recorded.

Boasting exceptional jungle lodges (including one which the late Gerald Durrell described as the model to which all other lodges should aspire) and island reef resorts, Belize has something for everyone – adult and child alike – who enjoys nature both below and above water and relishes good accommodation, reliable service and lack of crowds.

Travel & climate, when to visit belize.

The most popular time to visit Belize is the dry season from December to May, with June to October being the wet period, and Christmas and Easter the height of the season.

Often during the rainy season, a “mauger” or “little dry” occurs in August. Because overall precipitation only varies a little between the seasons, Belize can be seen as a year-round destination, apart from September, October and November: hurricane season.

Description of BELIZE: Birds and Monkeys Photo Safari

This awesome Belize photography workshop will include in-depth, hands-on photo instruction as we photograph birds, monkeys, butterflies, flowers, reptiles and local culture.

This tiny country has over 600 species of birds and the highest density of Jaguars of any country in Central America. Rainforest, pine savanna, wetlands and rivers will all offer their own unique challenges for photographing as well as witnessing Kevin and Roger’s professional approaches to each opportunity.

Belize is one of the most environmentally conscious countries in the Americas. Thanks in part to its small population, over 60% of Belize’s 8867 sq. miles (about the size of New Hampshire) have been protected. This protection has allowed the birds and wildlife of Belize to continue to flourish. Belize is the last Central American stronghold of the majestic Jabiru, a stork that stands about 5 feet tall with an 11 foot wingspan, which nests in the savannas and wetlands of the north. Regional endemics such as Yucatan Jay, Yucatan Flycatcher and Yellow-lored Parrot may also be found in the pine-oak savannas. The tropical dry forest of northwestern Belize offers a multitude of species more easily found in Belize than anywhere else.

Length of Tour

Brief (tentative) itinerary.

Day 1 – Arrive/La Milpa.

Day 2 – La Milpa Lodge.

Day 3 – La Milpa Lodge.

Day 4 – Crooked Tree.

Day 5 – Crooked Tree.

Day 6 – Crooked Tree.

Day 7 – Crooked Tree.

Day 8 – Home.

Detailed Itinerary – (the order in which we visit each location may vary)

Day 1 – arrive belize / rio bravo conservation area – la milpa lodge.

Arrive and transfer to he Rio Bravo Conservation Area (RBCA) with birding along the way. The RBCA covers 5% of Belize’s land area and is a privately held wildlife sanctuary and research area. The La Milpa Station, named for the ancient Mayan ruins found on the site, offers great food a excellent accommodations in the same forest as the famous (and much more expensive) Chan Chich Resort. The birding is incredible with Crested Eagle being seen regularly! This is also the area Belize chose to release a pair of Harpy Eagles donated from the breeding program in Panama.

Day 2 – La Milpa Lodge

Photography the property around Hill Bank is a great experience with bird and wildlife activity from dawn to dusk, and beyond, offering a multitude of species. Collared Forest Falcons, Ocellated Turkeys, Northern Potoos and lots of tanagers, honeycreepers and hummingbirds may be seen.

Night spotlighting may offer Spectacled Owl, Mottled Owl, Black-and-White Owl and a number of roosting passerines. We have also seen Jaguar, Margay, Jaguarundi, Kinkajou, Tapir and other mammals while spotlighting!

Day 3 – Hill Bank

Today’s photography will take us to the Lamanai ruins where the birdsong in the beautiful riparian rainforest is often interrupted by calls and chatters Black Howler Monkeys and Spider Monkeys! Here we will enjoy both landscape and wildlife photography as we explore the ancient structures amidst the shadows of the forest.

Day 4 – Drive to Crooked Tree Sanctuary / Crooked Tree Lodge

After breakfast we will depart for Crooked Tree having lunch along the way. Photo stops will keep us busy, especially at the Community Baboon Sanctuary (full of Black Howler Monkeys) and we will arrive at Crooked Tree Lodge late afternoon.

Crooked Tree Lodge sits quietly along the edge of the freshwater, seasonal lagoon. Here we can watch a multitude of wading birds, shorebirds and waterfowl. The surrounding savanna and wetlands offer excellent birds, including the majestic Jabiru stork.

Day 5 – Crooked Tree Sanctuary

We will explore the Crooked Tree Lagoon and Spanish Creek by boat in search of the many species of birds which inhabit this beautiful sanctuary. With low canopy logwood, turtlebone, provision tree and mangrove, good views of Yellow-tailed Oriole, Mangrove Vireo and Rufous-browed Peppershrike are very possible. The endangered Black Howler Monkey and Morelets Crocodile are also found here.

After lunch back at Crooked Tree Lodge, we will explore the upper end of the island, a pine-oak savanna. Yellow-lored (Yucatan) Parrot, Yucatan Woodpecker and Yucatan Jay can be found in this open habitat.

Day 6 & 7 – Crooked Tree Sanctuary

These two days we will keep open to explore areas we have found to be very active with wildlife or to explore new location… the flexibility of a scouting trip!

Day 8 – Depart for home

This is your opportunity to explore amazing saltwater mangrove estuaries, encounter wildlife and learn about the flora and fauna from your nature guide.

Board your sightseeing motor launch directly from the Harvest Caye Marina to explore Mother Nature's amazing saltwater mangrove estuaries and its inhabitants. The seating in your motor launch is comfortable and the canopied top affords protection from the warm tropical sun, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. Your experienced captain will slowly maneuver your vessel out of the marina and onto the protected waters of the Placencia Lagoon. He will chart a course towards one of the shallow manatee hang-out areas. More often than not, manatees will be in these areas grazing and relaxing. Your knowledgeable onboard nature guide will provide you with a detailed narrative about the manatees and their life cycle in the tropical waters of Belize.

As your tranquil sightseeing tour continues traveling along the shore of the picturesque lagoon, your captain will enter one of the many mangrove estuaries. These placid creeks are lined on both sides with mangrove trees with their arching root systems and thick verdant green leaves as they provide habitat for many forms of life.

As the passage narrows, your guide will point-out numerous species of flora and fauna, ranging from marine life, to aquatic plants and trees. There will be many species of birds and at times, wildlife that that live on the tropical savannahs might be spotted - you never know what you might encounter.

Kick back, relax and enjoy a complimentary rum punch or water.

Before you realize it, your Captain is entering the marina and your enjoyable marine estuary and lagoon sightseeing tour is drawing to an end. You’ll have plenty of memories and beautiful photos to share with your family and friends.

The Best Places to Visit in Belize

B elize is small but mighty. The country boasts gorgeous landscapes, fascinating history, incredible biodiversity, and a deep and diverse culture that will attract just about any type of traveler. Whatever your interest might be, Belize is bound to have it. With so much to do and see, it might be overwhelming to know where to go or even where to start. Well, look no further: This is your ultimate guide to Belize's best places to visit.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s buzziest locale. Visitors flock to the main town of San Pedro to relax on the beach by day and party it up by night. It's home to some of the best resorts, such as Alaia Belize .

Alaia is an all-inclusive that offers luxurious suites, and an impressive culinary menu, and has the only molecular mixologist in the country. While many might be tempted to not leave the beautiful resort, the town of San Pedro is worth exploring during the day to experience local Belizean food. WTF Food Tours takes guests around the island to the best local spots, ordering for you so you can never go wrong.

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest

Located in Belize’s Cayo District, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest is half pine forest and half jungle covering over 100,000 acres. This area is rich with wildlife, birds, and of course, plants. Only recently did the government begin building the first paved road into the area allowing travelers to explore this beautiful natural reserve. Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge is a luxury eco-resort covering over 7,000 acres of the park. Guests can hike and explore the surrounding area, as well as nearby sites like the Mayan ruins of Caracol, which are still the largest human-made structures in Belize.

This former fishing village is now a resort hot spot that has managed to hold on to its local Belizean flare. For a relaxing getaway stay at Naia Resort , where guests are given their private beachside villa. From delicious local dishes to a luxurious spa-like oasis, Naia has it all. Naia’s location is also ideal for exploring nearby neighborhoods to get a taste of local life.

Speaking of location, Placencia is on a peninsula in southern Belize this locale gives visitors equal opportunity to take tours into the rainforest and mainland Belize as well as to the nearby Silk Caye Marine Reserve. What's more, the nearby village of Hopkins offers opportunities for visitors to experience the unique Garifuna culture.

If you want to get off the grid and have a private island experience then book a stay on Ray Caye . You can choose between beach cabanas or villas. The honeymoon suite even boasts a private plunge pool. You can borrow a kayak or snorkel equipment by day and enjoy the island’s blue light that shines at night to attract sea life ashore. The perfect spot for wildlife life lovers as Ray Caye is a sea turtle hatching location as well as attracts large birds of prey. If you can’t spend the night there is a smaller area for daytime visitors to enjoy a pool, a beach, and a restaurant where they grow the majority of the greens on the island.

Caye Caulker

Consider Caye Caulker Ambergris' smaller, chiller neighbor. If you're more interested in a good book by the beach than bar hopping then head to this more laid-back alternative. No cars are allowed on Caye Caulker and everyone gets around on bikes or golf carts. This forces a slower, more relaxed way of life. So lie in a hammock and enjoy an ocean view with a fruity drink. If you’re still looking for a bit of adventure Belize’s barrier reef is still only one mile away!

San Ignacio

San Ignacio is the capital of the Cayo District and is known as the adventure capital of Belize. It has a small-town charm, offering local food markets and an Iguana sanctuary. But San Ignacio’s true appeal is its location. It is the perfect jumping-off point for any in-land adventure Belize has to offer. The Cayo District is famous for rainforest excursions or a day trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. There are also several Mayan ruin complexes around San Ignacio including Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. Travelers can enjoy cave tubing or the truly adventurous can venture out to the ATM Cave.

Belize City

Belize City holds the country’s only international airport and services the port for all visiting cruise ships. It’s a shame that the majority of travelers are just passing through as Belize City holds a massive amount of history as well as culture. The Historic Belize City Tour and the Museum of Belize help visitors understand Belize's past and present. Animal lovers will be interested in the Belize Zoo, which focuses on rescued native species and provides them with large open habitats to roam. There are also many nearby attractions like the Altun Ha Ruins or the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

Hummingbird Highway

The Hummingbird Highway is one of four highways in Belize. But it is by far the most scenic drive in the country. It stretches 53 miles from the capital Belmopan to the town of Dangriga. The highway cuts through gorgeous views of forested mountains and tries to find what the locals call the “sleeping giant” hidden in the landscape. Along the way, you can also enjoy pit stops at caves, cenotes, and tons of local food options.

Lighthouse Reef

The Great Blue is one of Belize’s most famous attractions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest sinkhole in the world. Lighthouse Reef is made up of the surrounding cayes that border the sinkhole. You can visit the reef by boat or through a fly-over tour. Snorkelers and scuba divers flock to the great blue hole to see what they can find. The most visited Caye of Lighthouse Reef is Half Moon Caye, which is home to over 4,000 red-footed boobies.

Getting to this cave is not for the faint of heart. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, better known as the ATM Cave, was discovered in 1989 and offers a unique look into ancient Mayan rituals. Within this cave, visitors will find the remains of several sacrifice victims as well as ancient utensils, pottery, and other artifacts. However, getting to the cave is not a walk in the park. Visitors must go with guides and will have to complete a somewhat strenuous hike, multiple river crossings, swimming through submerged caves, squeezing through very tight spaces within those caves, and traversing up rock faces. And that’s only one way! If you’re physically up for the challenge, this is an incredibly unique experience and look into the past.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Located near Ambergris Caye, Belize’s barrier reef is the second-largest coral reef structure in the world. While The Blue Hole is the most famous attraction in this barrier reef there is so much more to explore. Home to over 100 species of coral and 500 species of fish, you’ll also likely see nurse sharks, sea turtles, and sting rays. How Chan Marine Reserve welcomes visitors looking to snorkel, scuba dive, fish, or swim in sharks in its Shark Ray Alley.
