Sweden's Sabaton will bring their 'The Tour To End All Tours' tour to The OVO Hydro Glasgow on 18th April with support from The Hu and Lordi!

About Sabaton

Last year has been a challenging yet menacing one for bands all over the world: It has been a time of insecurity, worries and the fear of never being able to return to the status quo of touring. But, SABATON never was a band to fall that easily due to difficult circumstances. Instead of giving up on their visions and ambitions, the Swedish metal batalion forged their monumental tour plans to present to their fans today: A tour that makes the hearts of fans beat faster. If you close your eyes and listen carefully, you can already hear the sound of roaring guitars like thunder above a battlefield. You can catch the epic melodies like victorious anthems after a deserved victory and you can feel the tension of an approaching sensation: "The Tour To End All Tours". SABATON will be visiting 26 cities in 17 countries, bringing their ground-breaking modern metal to the people and delivering breathtaking live shows in a setting that will once again set new bars for concerts of this kind. SABATON will be supported by Mongolian rock band THE HU and Finnish heavy metal veterans LORDI.

Cut their chops by issuing a couple demos and performing in small clubs. In 2002, they travelled to Italy to record the album  Metalizer  for an indie label. But two years passed and it wasn’t released.

In 2004, frustrated and eager to get a debut out, Sabaton went back to square one, recording a demo called  Panzer Battalion . Although several labels contacted them, no deals were signed. Instead the band members decided to record their debut  Primo Victoria , which is Latin for ”victory first” ,  using their own money.

The independent Swedish label Black Lodge took notice and signed them. Within a year, the nine-song album was popular not only in Scandinavia but also throughout Europe.

Sabaton returned to the studio and their third album  Attero Dominatus  arrived in 2006, becoming   one of the best-selling metal albums in Sweden that year. With two successful albums under their belt, they were finally able to negotiate the release of  Metalizer  in 2007. It reached the No.1 spot on the Swedish hard rock charts. This led to an extensive headline tour throughout 20 European countries that included a slew of summer festivals.

In 2008, the band also launched their own festival, Sabaton Open Air, in their hometown of Falun. Plus the floodgates opened on their musical output with five more albums being unveiled across the next decade: 2008’s  The Art Of War,  2010’s  Coat Of Arms, 2012’s   Carolus Rex , 2014’s  Heroes  and 2016’s  The Last Stand .

The faces of Sabaton have changed over the years. The current line-up features original members Joakim Brodén on lead vocals and Pär Sundström on bass. Along with guitarists Chris Rörland and Tommy Johannson, and drummer Hannes van Dahl.

The band’s ninth album  The Great War  came out in 2019 and marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Its songs – from  Fields Of Verdun  and  The Red Baron  to  Seven Pillars of Wisdom  – covered stories from the war. Also in 2019, the band began their own history channel on YouTube called  Sabaton History  to delve into the background of all their songs.

In May 2021, they released the single  Defence Of Moscow , a cover of the Russian song by Radio Tapok. Sabaton also announced a headline UK tour for March 2022.

SABATON Announce European Dates For The Tour To End All Tours 2023

Following the release of their tenth studio album, The War To End All Wars, Sabaton come up with a huge announcement today: Spring 2023 will see the band touring across Europe on the eagerly awaited re-scheduled tour: The Tour To End All Tours.

Starting in Leeds on April 14th, 2023 the tour will bring Sabaton to 21 cities in 14 countries. They will present their biggest and most spectacular show to date in Europe's largest arenas. Fans can be assured that the band will write history with the ground-breaking live shows on The Tour To End All Tours. Support acts will be announced soon.

Sabaton’s tenth album, The War To End All Wars, is now available via Nuclear Blast Records. The new masterpiece from the Swedish metal force is determined to shake the world in its foundations, introducing a new era in the band's remarkable career.

The band states: "With our last album, The Great War, we found that we had only scratched the surface in terms of the powerful stories of courage and bravery and also the horrors that took place during the first World War. Fans would contact us and tell us these amazing stories from World War One that none of us had ever heard of before. Incredible, human tales like the British and German soldiers who put down their weapons on Christmas Eve in 1914 to share a moment of peace and reconciliation, right there on the battlefield; or the brave soldiers who fought in the White War, some 12,000 feet up in the Alps, who froze to death and whose bodies remain under the snow to this day. These are magnificent stories about everyday people who were willing to give their lives for something that was bigger than themselves. Marrying these true tales to loud, bruising, bone tingling heavy metal? Adding a second chapter to one the most frightening and liberating times in history? Why wouldn’t we make this album?"

To celebrate the release, Sabaton releases a video for their fourth single, "Race To The Sea". 'Race To The Sea' is a song about the decision from Albert of Belgium during WW1 to flood the last part of Belgium and with the help of water prevent all of Belgium to fall into German hands.

When Sabaton come to town, you know you’re in for a treat. When they lug along two headline-worthy supports you know your ticket money is going to be cash very well spent indeed. After our interview with Tommy and a rushed “dinner” in the local McD’s we made it into the venue just in time for Finland’s Lordi to take their rubbery steps onto the huge stage.

What we were treated to was great opening act entertainment. I’m not a massive fan of the band, their music is a little run-of-the-mill for my tastes, but they’re a very different thing live. The songs really come to life with Mr Lordi parading the stage. Unusually for a support act, especially an opener and emphasising that they’re a decent sized band in their own right, a fair bit of time was spent on audience interaction. Openers often try and cram in as many of their songs as they can into a limited set time, but with a generous slot and a sizeable number of fans throughout the audience already Lordi took the time to make a show of it.

And what a show! I’m glad they engaged with the crowd as Mr Lordi is good at it. Not taking things too seriously, and with a nice line in self-effacing humour, he was genuinely entertaining and raised as many laughs as the audience raised horns during the music. Songwise we were treated to a nice mix of old and new, with new album  Screem Writers Guild getting three tracks into the mix. No surprises, though, that the audient were awaiting “that” song, which rounded things off. You can’t beat “Hard Rock Hallelujah” to get the fists pumping.

I think the last time the band played in Glasgow they headlined the Classic Grand . Looking at the number of hands in the air throughout the folk on the ground floor, they could certainly consider an upgrade next time. Maybe the main hall of SWG3?

Lordi’s backdrop was removed, some stupidly bright light and another backdrop were bolted into place and a short while later the unbridled lunacy that is  Babymetal flew into action. Babymetal are a bit of a marmite band and I can certainly understand why. Their music alone is enough to divide opinions, but the live show adds to the arguments.

I liked it. Absolutely hands down, I liked it. The songs were mental, the dancing wonderfully choreographed and bizarre, and the light show was all that was needed to emphasise it. What does need pointing out, though, is that the band is more than just the three ladies fronting it. Sure, they’re the focus, but ladies and gentlemen… the anonymous musicians. Good grief, they’re awesome! Lined up wearing facemasks, they were essentially stationery for the whole show, but the noise they made was incredible. Most noticeable was the drummer who was a damn  machine .

Babymetal on the stereo at home are OK, but the sound tonight did them a lot of favours. It sounded more downtuned, bassy and punchy and made their entire set far more metal than baby. Their seven-song set seemed to be over far too quickly, but it was just packed with glittery costumes and hard riffs. What astounded me was at the end of the set where the audience were being thanked was that the singers didn’t even seem out of breath. Say what you like about their music or appearance, they’re physically stupidly fit and put on one hell of a unique show. It’s only a shame there was no big screen and camera so we could see the performers in all their glory. We were sat a bit back in the accessible seating with a good overall view, but it would have been nice to see more.

“Gimme Chocolate!!” was probably the best song from their set with it’s Jekyll/Hyde mix of brutal beats and candy store vocals. It’s just a shame we didn’t get a guest appearance from Joakim and a rendition of “Oh! MAJINAI” but you can’t be greedy.

Mind, we didn’t have long to wait until the main man himself and  Sabaton as a whole appeared on stage. A huge stage. With the biggest single backdrop I think I’ve ever seen. And a massive set of letters proclaiming “THE TOUR TO END ALL TOURS” which turned out to be part of the light show.

After what seemed a slight issue with the pre-recorded intro, it was no surprise to have “Ghost Division” blast out as the traditional opening song. Barely even up to the first chorus and Joakim was at the end of on-stage japery as multiple guitar picks were stuck to his sweaty scalp. “Bismarck” and the ridiculously bouncy “The Last Stand” followed as the biggest Sabaton show that Glasgow has ever seen laid waste to the assembled masses. “Into The Fire” was introduced as being an old and fast number and such it is. It actually sounds a bit out of place amongst the newer, more heavily produced material but the audience lapped it up nonetheless.

The aforementioned big letters lit up blue and yellow as Sabaton visited their own nation’s history for “Carolus Rex” – in Swedish. I found myself singing along with the English lyrics seeing as I don’t know my Å from my Ä! Reversing the viewpoint, we next got a song unique amongst the UK tour setlists. Where all the other dates featured “The Winged Hussars” it would have been remiss of Sabaton to not include “Blood of Bannockburn” when they were playing Scotland. No surprises, like when The Darkness opened their recent show here with “Welcome Tae Glasgae”, the audience went absolutely mental.

By this point I’d noticed the one tiny issue with tonight’s show – the sound. Like Alter Bridge a few weeks ago, the headline act’s sound was clicked up a point above the supports’ and this took it  just into “distorting annoyingly” territory. Things may have been better had I remembered my earplugs, but it was the only downside in an otherwise superb evening’s entertainment.

The stage show was embellished by short acted sections as well as the usual flames, gunfire, fireworks, sparklers, explosions, smoke and so on. A brief segment detailing the events in “Sarajevo” led into “Stormtroopers” and then one of the absolute highlights of a wonderful evening. When they dropped the video for “1916” last week, I noted that it was probably my favourite Motorhead track, and that Sabaton had indeed done it justice. I still didn’t expect it to appear in their setlist, as it’s a cover. Consider me absolutely overjoyed that it was slapped right in the middle.

“Soldier of Heaven” is another welcome addition to the setlist from the most recent album, but even more recent is “Father” which debuted on one of the three EPs which came out over recent months. This performance featured a small cast portraying Fritz Haber and associated developing the chemical weaponry that led to the events told in “The Attack of the Dead Men” which followed. A natural pairing of songs which really cemented the effort and ideas that go into a Sabaton show.

Rounding off the main set was another surprise -“The Christmas Truce” – the climax to which was a shower of glitter, sparkles and tape. Absolutely mindblowing.

Obviously, things couldn’t end there. More flames and laughs took us through the mandatory “Primo Victoria” and “Swedish Pagans” before the familiar whistled intro let us all know we’d made it “To Hell And Back” and the show reluctantly came to an incredible climax. Little propaganda leaflets were dumped on the crowd as the band posed on stage for the traditional “look at the audience we just played for” photo and several thousand people wished there was time for just another ten or fifteen songs.

Every time I see Sabaton it’s the best Sabaton show to date. This was no exception. I’ve seen so many bands in my time, I’ve been left in absolute raptures by many… but I honestly don’t think there’s a better  show than the one that our Swedish friends put on. Yeah, OK, Rammstein probably just about pip them in terms of scale. But roll on the next time. I really don’t know how they’ll make it any better. But they will.

Sabaton announce The Tour To End All Tours for 2022

Sabaton’s 2022 European tour will visit 26 cities in 17 countries, starting in Norway on March 4

Sabaton will embark upon a 26 city, 17 countries European tour in the spring of 2022, with The Hu and Lordi in tow.

Bassist Pär Sundström says, “We have all been waiting for far too long for this... And we are more ready than ever. By the time we start this tour we will have a whole treasure chest of new songs to play along with a lot of other surprises. You do not want to miss The Tour to End All Tours.”

Tickets for the UK shows go on sale Friday July 9 at 10am BST at MyTicket.co.uk & sabaton.net/tour . 

There is also an early bird reward, with everyone who buys a ticket before 4pm BST on July 9 receiving exclusive access to the band's Exitfest livestream that same night for free.

This past April, SABATON released the English-language version of its latest single, "Livgardet" ( "The Royal Guard" ).

SABATON 's first new music since 2019's "The Great War" , "The Royal Guard" honored the Swedish Royal Guards first established in the year 1521.

SABATON is arguably one of the most important bands to emerge from the modern metal scene, journeying forth with confidence on a steady ascendance that's rewarded them with five Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards (including "Best Live Band" three different years) and multiple nominations for the Swedish equivalent of the Grammy Awards , the Grammis . In 2016, "The Last Stand" debuted at No. 1 in three different European countries and cracked the Top 3 in four others. Joakim Brodén , Sundström , Chris Rörland (guitars), Hannes Van Dahl (drums) and Tommy Johansson (guitars) curate a festival of their own, Sabaton Open Air , that started back in 2008, as well as their own forward-thinking Sabaton Cruise , that is being held since 2009.

SABATON 's ninth album centered on World War I, often referred to as "The Great War." "The Last Stand" delved into various "last stands" throughout history. "Livgardet" strengthened the band's well-known reputation as experts, aficionados, and storytellers regarding the triumph and tragedy of battle.

SABATON headlined London's Wembley Arena in February 2020. JUDAS PRIEST chose them as main support on their "50 Heavy Metal Years" tour of North America, scheduled for September and October 2021. The group will kick off 2022 with an unprecedented 29-city tour of their home country.
