Description official description

The fourth in the Pro Pinball series, this game once again features only one table. The theme is Victorian technology - by building such machines as an airship and submarine and performing various tasks (such as completing 'adventures' by shooting ramps), the goal is to defeat the evil General Yagov. A multi coloured dot panel is the main new feature compared to other Pro Pinball games.

The original version includes a cut down (256 colour mode only) version of Pro Pinball: The Web . Unfortunately, the CD tracks are wrong, meaning you get the wrong music during play.

Multiplayer

This game has quietly dropped the feature first introduced in Pro Pinball: Big Race USA ; the ability to play over a network has not been included.

This is the first Pro Pinball game not to include regular CD audio tracks - the music is stored in a compressed form on the CD.

Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey - PC

Product information, product description.

Challenging your gaming skills to the limit, Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey complements its new good looks with the most accurate physics engine ever devised for a pinball game. As a result, the ball movement and flipper animation is now so smooth, detailed, and authentic, you'd swear you were watching the real thing. An Operator's Menu allows players full control of the way the game plays, including five difficulty settings, game stats, and the ability to alter the amount of balls used per game and the number of tilt warnings. Further options offer you the opportunity to adjust the slope of the machine, the flipper strength, and even the age of the table.

The last few months have been tough on pinball fans. In October 1999, WMS Industries killed its Williams/Bally pinball division. This was sad news, as Williams was the creator of some of the best tables of the last decade, including The Addams Family and Twilight Zone. Likewise, Pro Pinball publisher Empire Interactive announced that Fantastic Journey will be the last Pro Pinball game. While the two recent Pro Pinball tables (Timeshock and Big Race USA) may not have been classics like Williams' best, they were still excellent tables simulated in astonishing detail. Fortunately, the reportedly final pinball game from Empire and developer Cunning Developments is as accurate a simulation as its predecessors, but it has one problem: The table just isn't as fun. Since the release of Timeshock, the Pro Pinball series has been deservedly praised for its attention to detail. Like Timeshock, the Fantastic Journey table is modeled down to every moving part, every screw, and every flashing light. The detail is so remarkable that it's enjoyable simply to enter the table-view mode and zoom in on the various areas. The game is played with the full table in view (there's no option for old-style scrolling), and you have three elevation angles to choose from. Playing the game couldn't be more straightforward; you use the CTRL keys to activate the flippers and the space bar to nudge the table. Like other Pro Pinball games, Fantastic Journey is as much a simulation of owning an actual pinball table as it is a game. The designers have attempted to give you total control over the game: You have access to the operator's menu so you can change replay scores, check incredibly detailed factual histories, and so forth. You can even increase the number of balls per game from the standard three to ten. The options don't end at the operator's menu. You can also adjust the table slope, the flipper power, and the amount of wear on the machine. This last option is the most interesting, but it doesn't actually have much effect on the game. Even if you set the wear to the "neglected" setting, there's no visual change to the machine, and the changes to how the table plays will be negligible to all but the most sensitive players. The graphics are photo-realistic, and the flashing lights and visual effects (including the game's display-screen video games) are great without being overbearing. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the sound effects. While the mechanical sounds for bumpers, flippers, and the like are excellent, the table's digitized voices and music are annoying to the point of distraction. The table itself is good, but not as good as Big Race USA or Timeshock. You have a standard selection of ramps, bumpers, and table-specific gadgets, the latter of which are built on the Jules Verne-esque retro science-fiction theme of the table. However, there's nothing too inventive about the table design, and even the gadgets perform relatively basic functions. Casual pinball fans may even find the design of the table somewhat frustrating; like Big Race USA, the Fantastic Journey table is designed for experienced players, as a few of the target shots require incredible precision. It would have been interesting to see a simulated table that took into account all of the recent innovations in pinball, such as the implementation of computer graphics in Bally's Revenge from Mars. And Pro Pinball's developers have already proven that they can simulate a pinball game with incredible accuracy, so an accurate simulation of a somewhat generic table isn't quite as impressive as it used to be. But in this dark age of pinball, its fans must be happy with what they can get. And Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey supplies all the realism and most of the fun, even if it lacks much in the way of innovation. --Ron Dulin -- Copyright ©1998 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey Review

An accurate simulation of a somewhat generic pinball table isn't quite as impressive as it used to be.

From his Mysterious Island, General Yagov is holding the world to ransom. If his demands aren’t met he will launch a rocket to destroy the Moon, wreaking havoc and disaster on a scale never before seen.

Unfortunately nobody is able to penetrate the bizarre shield which protects the Island. Nobody that is, but Professor Steam! By building four amazing steam powered contraptions, and going on four fantastic adventures he can collect four special crystals which will form a device that will penetrate the shield!

Only you can help the Professor to build the contraptions, collect the crystals, penetrate the shield, stop the General and save the World!

Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey is the fourth pinball game in Cunning Developments ' Pro Pinball series. It was released in 1999 for Microsoft Windows PCs , Apple Macintosh computers, and the PlayStation , and was also available for the Sega Dreamcast as part of "Pro Pinball Trilogy".

The game takes place in Victorian Britain , where the evil General Yagov is threatening to destroy the Moon, and only the intrepid Professor Steam (and his player assistant) can stop him. Collect the parts to build four amazing Contraptions, then tunnel to the Earth's core, journey to the ocean depths, fly through the tallest mountains, and sail the Amazon. Fend off various creatures including a giant Octopus and a fire-breathing dinosaur, gather four special Crystals, then penetrate the shield protecting the General's Mysterious Island and foil his schemes!

Pinball buffs tend to have mixed feelings about Fantastic Journey . On the plus side, the game engine is the best in the series, with highly-detailed graphics and an even more refined physics engine. On the other hand, the playfield and rules are a little sparse compared to earlier Pro Pinball titles, and the high difficulty curve makes it a challenge for even the best players.

Not to be confused with the Parodius game, or the 1977 television series.

"Ah, nice to meet you!"

  • During any multiball mode (Steam/Fast Frenzy/Mystery), the Steam during an Adventure never decreases.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology : Fire-breathing dinosaurs, enough said.
  • Beneath the Earth : The Drill Adventure is a journey to the Center of the Earth.
  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti : A Yeti can be found in the mountains of the Airship Adventure.
  • Big "NO!" : Invoked by the General when you beat the Space Adventure.
  • The Steam Frenzy Jackpot caps at 100 million points.
  • The Fast Frenzy Jackpot caps at 50 million.
  • Bonus X caps at 10x. Further completion of the Bonus X rollovers awards 2 million, and the first time this is achieved lights an Extra Ball.
  • Ultra modes cap at 100 million points each.
  • Failing the Space Adventure resets your progress back to rebuilding the contraptions.
  • Another variant exists in the style of the Double Feature from Creature from the Black Lagoon , where a right ramp shot that returns to the left flipper sets up the right orbit to feed the bumpers and score double the value. Optionally, one can also loop the right ramp for an increasing value before collecting.
  • Cool Airship : You must build one to go on the Airship Adventure.
  • Deflector Shield : Yagov's Island has one surrounding it. Only the four crystal fragments are powerful enough to destroy it. Yagov: "My shield is IMPENETRABLE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! "
  • Detonation Moon : This is General Yagov's threat.
  • Difficulty Levels : Each of the five difficulty levels — ranging from Extra Easy to Extra Hard — presents its own rule changes and complexities.
  • Disney Villain Death : At the end of the Space Adventure, Professor Steam fires the weapon from his own rocket towards Yagov, causing his rocket to go off course and miss the Moon, hurtling towards the Sun. Professor Steam : "Farewell, General!"
  • Drill Tank : This is one of the Professor's four Contraptions.
  • Easter Egg : A hidden message is hidden somewhere in the Operator Menu. General Yagov : "This game is dedicated to Mr. H. We miss you."
  • Evil Laugh : General Yagov does this often throughout the game.
  • Giant Octopus : There's one at the bottom of the Deepest Ocean on the Submarine Adventure.
  • Island Base / Island of Mystery : General Yagov's headquarters is a base on the Mysterious Island.
  • It Has Only Just Begun : General Yagov after completing the Island Adventure. He continues his plan to destroy the moon at the last second.
  • Missing Secret : The Ultra Jackpot has been featured in every previous Pro Pinball game, yet there are no resources available describing how to get an Ultra Jackpot. An entry exists in the Book Keeping section in the Operator Menu, though, so whether it's an actual Ultra Jackpot remains to be seen.
  • My God, What Have I Done? : Invoked by the Professor when you lose to General Yagov.

fantastic journey pinball

  • Non-Fatal Explosions : Raising the steam pressure high enough to Blow the Boiler rewards the player with more points.
  • Plot Coupon : The four crystals.
  • Prepare to Die / Tonight, Someone Dies : The General says this during the Attract Mode after his Evil Laugh ...sometimes.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent : A Giant Anaconda awaits in the Amazon Boat Adventure.
  • Science Hero : Professor Steam.
  • Somehow this game feels a lot like Williams' Junk Yard , when the player is tasked with collecting contraption parts and going on different adventures.
  • This isn't the first pinball game to have a General Yagov as the primary antagonist. Even his mannerisms are the same, minus the hamminess of the original.
  • Collecting 4 crystal fragments to prevent a certain danger. Sound familiar?
  • Ultra Modes are directly referenced from World Cup Soccer .
  • Skill Shot : Shoot the random flashing drop target after launching the ball for bonus points and to immediately spell GATHER. This also lights Magno Save, Ball Rescue, an Ultra Mode, and spots an arrow for a Contraption Component, where applicable.
  • Drop Challenge: Spell G-A-T-H-E-R in that order to light an Extra Ball.
  • Steampunk : In addition to Professor Steam's various contraptions, the playfield features are also rendered in a Steampunk fashion, with heavy use of brass.
  • Stuff Blowing Up : Seen by completing "Blow the Boiler," progressing through the various adventures, and finishing Island Adventure.
  • This Cannot Be! : Invoked by General Yagov when you beat the Island Adventure.
  • Subverted with the adventures; the boiler pressure, which is maintained by hitting the spinner, represents the timer for these modes. While the boiler pressure can be increased both before and during the modes, if the pressure is completely depleted, the spinner has to be shot to continue the adventure.
  • Shout-Out : To Pro Pinball: The Web .
  • One is Mystery, earned by completing all of the surrounding Steam Modes at the scoop. This activates Fast Frenzy as well as the five timed Steam Modes, all of which last like they would in normal play. It's a mystery... so just guess!
  • Space Adventure is qualified after successfully finishing Island Adventure. Thankfully you have as much time as you need to build the final contraption: the rocket. This is a single ball, 2 minute timed mode where you have to make a difficult shot to a magnet under the model rocket to launch into space, then go for the spinner to chase down Yagov and make his rocket go off course.
  • Victory Frenzy starts after a successful Space Adventure as a postscript mode. This is a 6-ball Fast Frenzy, with Super Jackpots replacing the regular Jackpots.

Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey screenshot #1

Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey has many features one would expect to find on a standard pinball machine. You'll see bumpers, buzzers, bells, ramps, flippers, gates and plenty of lights. The machine also has a LCD screen where you see your score, current ball count and graphical outputs of on-screen adventure. An option is provided to make it a full color display or leave it in the traditional colors found on a standard pinball machine.

Each of the machine's quests or adventures requires you to trigger spinners or buttons in order to advance; to even get a chance at a journey will require you to hit a specific "lit" area of the playing surface. Several other features, such as multipliers and multi-balls have also been included. The game boasts accurate physics that allow the ball to spin, jump, roll and slide.

Several external features have been incorporated in order to offer a more realistic Arcade experience. For instance, the machine can actually be nudged to simulate aggression or to move a ball one direction; too much abuse of this option can cause a "tilt," at which point the machine resets with your current ball lost. Several other options can also be selected, such as the difficulty of the game and selecting one of three different camera angles.

Two other features are included in an attempt to heighten the realism of the game. The first is the customization of flipper power, which allows you to alter how hard or soft the flippers hit the ball during gameplay. The second feature, which is machine condition, allows you to decide how well the pinball machine is maintained and, therefore, how accurate and true your game will be.

High scores are chronicled in the game's record books and can possibly earn you a free-play or extra credits. Additionally, the game uses the number-match feature after every game in a lottery-like chance of awarding a free play.

To the dismay of pinball fans everywhere, Williams recently announced that they were shutting down their pinball division. It is my sad duty to report the death of PC pinball as well: the latest Pro Pinball offering is a step backwards for the series. It not only fails to excite, but shows that perhaps there is just no more room for improvement in this genre. Obviously influenced by the works of Jules Verne, Fantastic Journey pits you against the evil General Yugov, who wants to blow up the moon. You are aided on the way by various steam-powered devices. None of this really matters, as the game does nothing to progress the story.

Here's a snippet of hype: "A revolutionary changing play field, where amazing steam-powered contraptions such as the Drill, Boat, Submarine and Balloon appear to change the gameplay." The key word here is APPEAR. The thing pops up, and then... you continue to shoot the same targets for points and combos. This is a really bland table. Two sets of drop targets, two ramps, some out-of-the-way bumpers, one spinner, and one set of flippers. Didn't we learn 10 years ago that at least two sets of flippers are necessary to maintain enough interaction to keep players interested?

Another aspect of PPFJ being hyped is the color dot-matrix display. Gee, that's great, but where are the display mini-games? Very few are here, and they're not that exciting. Indeed, "not that exciting" sums up the game as a whole. There's no sense of progression, and even multiball falls flat in terms of generating any kind of frenzy. Just look at the wide-open space in the center of the board. One well-placed bumper there would have done wonders to speed up the pace of the game. Instead, it's a total yawnfest. I had to force myself to keep playing.

Controls are the same as ever: left flipper, right flipper, launch, and 3 directions of nudge. There is one new control: Magnosave, which will occasionally save your ball from a quick death down the left-hand lane. Nice to have, but hardly revolutionary. The operator's menu gives the usual assortment of fine tuning options. Unfortunately, none of them allows you to turn up the "fun".

The few sound effects are irritating, but worse is the voice acting. After a few minutes of play, you'll be begging General Yugov and Professor Steam to shut the hell up. If I have to hear the Prof say "it appears that LUCK is lit" one more time, I will introduce him to a few steam-powered devices of my own design. The music as well is annoying pseudo-funk, a big letdown after the great music that propelled Big Race USA.

Despite Empire's new lighting engine, there are no noticeable enhancements in the graphics. The table is shiny and detailed, but prone to annoying patches of slowdown, particularly during multiball (6 ball maximum, as opposed to last year's 10 balls). The color dot matrix is not used well enough to be satisfying, and the "contraptions" slowly rotate to the surface of the board, and... well, do nothing except turn around once in a while. The ball physics are spot on, but this hardly saves the game. In fact, it's the only area where Fantastic Journey shows any improvement in the series.

Multiplayer is hot seat only. The head to head LAN/Internet mode is gone. Why? So they could spend more time working that really neat color dot matrix? Big points deducted for this.

Fantastic Journey is simply a disappointment in light of last year's Big Race USA, an amazing game that is still delightfully fun to play, the pinnacle of the genre. Empire Interactive really "dropped the ball" on this one. I recommend it only for those who must have every PC pinball game. The rest of us can skip it, and mourn the death of pinball.

How to run this game on modern Windows PC?
