At a distance of 50 km from Surendranagar, 100 km from Ahmedabad, 238 km from Bhuj, and 320 km from Great Rann of Kutch, the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary is a protected sanctuary located in the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat. Also known as the Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary, it is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat , and among the best places to visit near Ahmedabad for wildlife enthusiasts. Spread over an area of 4954 sq. km, the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary was established in 1972 and came under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The Wild Ass Sanctuary of the Little Rann of Kutch is the only place on earth where the endangered Indian Wild Ass, known locally as the ghudkhar, still lives. At a distance of 42 km from Rajkot Junction, the Rampara Wildlife Sanctuary is a dense woodland situated near Khijadiya village near Rajkot, Gujarat. It is one of the major places of wildlife in Gujarat , and among the best places to visit as part of Rajkot packages . It has been selected as an alternate place for the Asiatic lion breeding center in Gujarat. A former shooting reserve owned by the erstwhile princely state of Wankaner, Rampara was acquired by the government in 1975, declared as a reserve forest in 1983, and notified as a Sanctuary in 1988 to protect the natural vegetation and the wildlife of the area. At a distance of 49 km from Vadodara, Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the ancient city of Champaner. Covering over an area of 1,329 hectares, Champaner - Pavagadh Archeological Park is located around the historical city of Champaner, founded by the Rajput King Vanraj Chavda in the 8th century. At a distance of 28 km from Mehsana, 35 km from Patan and 100 km from Ahmedabad, Modhera Sun Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located at Modhera village near Patan in Gujarat. Situated on the banks of River Pushpavati, it is one of the popular places of heritage in India , and among the must include places in Patan packages . Dedicated to the Sun God, the Sun Temple in Modhera was built by King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty in 1026 AD, and is one of the prominent heritage sites near Ahmedabad . At a distance of 60 km from Patan Railway Station, Shankeshwar Jain Temple is an ancient Jain temple located in Shankeshwar town in Gujarat. Built in the year 1098 CE by Sajjan Shah on the banks of the Rupen River, the temple is dedicated to Lord Parshwanath. At a distance of 8 km from Nashik Central Bus Station, Pandavleni Caves or Trirashmi Caves are the ancient rock cut caves situated on Trirashmi Hills to the south of Nashik. The location of the caves is a holy Buddhist site in Maharashtra and also one of the popular places to visit in Nashik. Pandavleni Caves are a group of 24 caves carved between the 3rd century BC and the 2nd century AD, representing the Hinayana Buddhism and has nothing to do with the characters of Mahabharata (the Pandavas).These caves were built by the rulers of that time like Satavahanas and Kshaharatas for Hinayana Buddhist monks. More ancient name of caves is Trirashmi Caves where the root 'Trirashmi' means 'triple royal'. Most of the caves are Viharas except for the 18th cave which is a Chaitya. Caves 3, 10, 18 and 20 are the most significant and fascinating caves among the 24 caves which are noted for their magnificent sculptures. Cave 3 has a large Vihara with fascinating sculptures. 24. Saptashrungi Devi Temple

At a distance of 26 km from Vani and 65 km from Nashik, Saptashrungi Devi Mandir is a Hindu temple situated near Nanduri village. The temple lies atop the cliff with an altitude of 1,230 m. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Saptashrungi. The temple is known popularly as one of the 'three and half Shakti Peethas' of Maharashtra. The temple is also one among the 51 Shakti Peethas located on the Indian subcontinent and is a location where one of Sati's limbs, her right arm is reported to have fallen. It is also believed that the presiding deity of the temple is Mahishasur Mardini, who was the slayer of the demon Mahishasur. At the foot of the hill lies the head of a buffalo, made of stone, which is believed to be that of the demon. Saptashrungi Temple is a two storied shrine with the Devi enshrined in the top floor. The goddess idol is said to be swayambhu (self-manifested) which was carved on a rock on the sheer face of a mountain. She is surrounded by seven (sapta-in Sanskrit) peaks (shrunga-in Sanskrit), hence the name- Saptashrungi Mata (mother of the seven peaks). At a distance of 30 km from Nashik, Sinnar is a town and a municipal council in Sinnar taluka of Nashik district in Maharashtra. Sinnar is mainly famous for Sri Gondeshwar Temple and Gargoti Museum. It is one of the famous places to visit near Aurangabad . Gondeshwar Temple is situated about 2 km from Sinnar Bus Station and it represents the best example of the Hemadpanti style of architecture. The structure was constructed using the locally available black basalt stone and lime. The temple's origin dates back to 12 - 13th century during the Yadava dynasty. Some sources claim that Raj Govinda of the Yadava dynasty built this great temple. Yet another tradition assigns the building to Govindaraja, another Yadava king who ruled about the beginning of the twelfth century AD. 26. Dhar Fort

At a distance of 36 km from Mandu, and 65 km from Indore, Dhar Fort is a historical fort situated in the Dhar city of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the top heritage sites near Indore , and among the must-visit places as part of Mandu holiday packages. Dhar is an important medieval town and the erstwhile capital of Malwa Kingdom ruled by the Parmar dynasty from 800 - 1327 AD. Raja Bhoj, the most illustrious of the Parmaras shifted his capital from Ujjain to Dhar, where he established a university for Sanskrit studies, known as the Bhoja Shala. During the time of King Bhojdev (1010-1055), this fort was known as Dhar Giri Lilodyan. When Alauddin Khalji ascended the throne of Delhi, Islamic influence began to spread in Dhar, as a result of which in 1305 Ainul Mulk Multani, the general of Alauddin Khalji, attacked Malwa and killed the Parmara ruler Mahalakdev and ended the Parmar dynasty. 6 Cool Things to Do Near Auckland Airport

Typically, we head out to the airport when we are leaving the region or picking up a friend or family member, and we don’t usually give much thought to the things to do near Auckland Airport. However, the other day, when our daughter was arriving on a regional flight right in the heart of rush hour, our heart sank when we thought about the traffic.

Jeff and I are never fans of sitting in traffic. To dodge the notorious rush hour, we decided to arrive early, giving us ample time to enjoy some of the cool things to do around the Auckland airport. We had our short list in mind, we know there are some walking opportunities, mini-golf, animal opportunities (very kid-friendly), and the new premium outlet mall.

We supplemented this list by asking the over half a million members of our Facebook group,  Explore New Zealand , and we feel pretty confident that below are the best things to do near Auckland Airport, followed by a section that covers the things to do at Auckland Airport.

Things to do near Auckland Airport

Mānawa bay premium outlet mall, treasure island adventure golf, butterfly creek, otuataua stonefields historic reserve, ambury regional park, villa maria estate winery.

The Mānawa Bay Premium Outlet Mall turned out to be a fantastic find for us. We timed our visit perfectly with the grand opening day, making the most of the deals and promotions.

While the mall features an array of shops catering to all tastes and preferences, I found it heavy on sporting brands. Of course, this could be because that’s what I needed most on the day we shopped.

There is also a decent-sized food court and plenty of spots for a quick cup of coffee.

There is plenty of free parking, even enough for the grand opening day crowds. On that day, a lot of staff were out directing traffic, which seemed to slow down the parking process. I am guessing that is just first day growing pains.

Pro tip: If you are waiting for an outbound flight, make sure you have room in your bags for all your purchases.

If it’s a nice day, don’t miss the fun at Treasure Island Adventure Golf, which is one of the more active things to do around Auckland airport.

This pirate-themed mini-golf course is perfect for families, couples, or anyone looking to kill some time with a bit of competitive fun. The intricately designed course, complete with life-sized pirate ships, haunted treasure caves, shark-infested waters, and cascading waterfalls, is just loads of fun.

Best of all, you can often get discount admission (up to 50% off) here , sometimes even at the last minute.

Butterfly Creek is a kid-friendly paradise. It is so much more than just a place to see butterflies; it is that too. In fact, the butterfly house is one of those magical places (for kids) where they get to walk among them.

Visitors also get up close and personal with a variety of exotic animals and insects. There are also saltwater crocodiles, monitor lizards, farm animals, meerkats, and an aquarium. It’s even one of the many places in New Zealand to see kiwi birds . It’s a perfect spot for both the young and the young at heart.

Exploring the Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve is a must for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This site preserves the remains of early Māori settlements that are hundreds of years old and also includes some original European stone fences.

The walking paths offer scenic views of the Manukau Harbour and the surrounding countryside, providing a peaceful retreat and a chance to ponder the lives of Auckland’s earliest inhabitants. NZ History tells the full story here .

Auckland is filled with fabulous regional parks, and  Ambury Regional Park , located on the shore of Manukau Harbour, is no exception. As you can see from the image, it’s one of the outdoor things to do around Auckland Airport that is fabulous, even without a sunny day.

The park is a working farm, a significant shorebird habitat filled with fascinating volcanic basalt lava flow landscapes.

Visitors can walk amongst a variety of farm animals, and if you arrive in early spring, be warned, the lambs will capture your heart. It’s an educational and interactive experience, ideal for families with children.

Just a short drive from the airport, Villa Maria Estate Winery is one of New Zealand’s most celebrated wineries, having been awarded the New Zealand Wine Company of the Year at least 15 times in the past 20+ years.

You can tour the estate, have a tasting in the cellar, enjoy a light meal or snack in the cafe, or just stroll through the grounds. The last time we visited, we saw hand-pickers harvesting the grapes.

Things to do at Auckland Airport while you wait

If you don’t have a car, don’t have time to go to one of the nearby spots, or have an unexpected plane delay, there are a few things to do at Auckland Airport while you wait.

Regardless of which terminal you are at, these options exist. However, we have found considerably more options of things to do at Auckland Aiport International Terminal than at the domestic terminal, and even less around regional flights.

My favourite thing to do at Auckland Airport is to simply walk around and enjoy some of the carvings and artwork. Other top options include shopping, eating, drinking, relaxing, people or plane watching, or just enjoying a good chat with your travel partners.

• From luxury brands to local souvenirs, there are some impressive duty-free shopping options if you are beyond international security.
• Eating and drinking options range from fast food like McDonald’s to cafes, bars, and even sit-down restaurants.
• If neither of those appeal, grab a book or plug in your headphones and unwind in one of the many comfortable seating areas.
• And when all else fails, plane or people-watching can be surprisingly therapeutic. Find a spot near the large windows and watch the aircraft take off and land.

Auckland is definitely on our list for when we finally make it to New Zealand. I like the variety of things to see and do. And we definitely want to visit a winery and taste the local wine. Nice to see so much close to the Auckland airport for a short stay.
