Ranjit Singh reconstructed the city on European town planning principles, under the guidance of Sir Edward Lutyens - architect of New Delhi. At a distance of 56 km from Jamnagar Railway Station, Narara Marine National Park is a marine wildlife sanctuary in the Gulf of Kutch near Jamnagar. Situated next to Vadinar Village, it is the first Marine national park in India , and among the top places of sightseeing in Jamnagar . The Narara Marine National Park is one of the rare places in the world where one can look at corals without having to dive down into the water. About an area of 458 sq. km from Okha to Jodiya was declared as a Marine Sanctuary in 1980. Later, in 1982, about 163 Sq. km of core area was declared as a Marine National Park under the provisions of the Wildlife Act, 1972 of India. There are 42 tropical islands on the Jamnagar coast in the Marine National Park, most of them surrounded by reefs. Out of which 33 islands have coral reefs. Tourist Places To Visit In Jamnagar

Jamnagar is one of the top tourist destinations in Gujarat . The city is economically and traditionally important to the state. Popularly known as the “Oil City”, Jamnagar has everything to surprise you. From stunning beaches to amazing palaces, temples to bird sanctuaries forests and marine national park, you just can't avoid exploring more about the city. Surprisingly, the city is an under-rated destination, not explored much by globetrotters. So let’s try to know more about the city by listing some of the best places to visit in Jamnagar.

Lakhota Palace

Lakhota Palace is undoubtedly the top tourist attraction in Jamnagar. Constructed in the 19th century, it’s a stunning monument that is built right at the center of Lakhota Lake. Being surrounded by water on all sides, there’s a marvelous arched stone bridge built to connect the palace with the city. This elegant fort-like palace has now been converted into a museum. Visitors can enjoy the splendid relics and artifacts from the 9th to the 18th century at the display. Amongst others, witnessing the pottery from medieval times and the skeleton of a whale is also a worthwhile sight. At the entrance of the palace, the first things that will attract your attention are the turrets and powder flasks, guardroom with musket loops, and swords of all sizes.

Bhujio Kotho

Bhujio Kotho is situated on the bank of Lakhota Lake, near the Khambhaliya Gate. It was constructed by the rulers of that time to protect it from invasions. However, after the earthquake that hit Bhuj and other cities in Gujarat , Bhujio Kotho took a major hit. Since then, it is closed to visitors. It’s however famous for its architecture, height, and holes for rifles in the walls. It still grabs the attention of visitors or anyone who happens to pass by.

Khijadia Bird Sanctuary

Jamnagar is known for being home to more than 300 different species of birds in its unique Khijadia Bird Sanctuary. Situated at about 12 km from the Jamnagar city center, the sanctuary stretches over an area of 6 sq. km, encircling fresh and seawater marshlands. Its real beauty comes to light between October and March, especially during sunrise and sunset. If you are lucky, you can sight some endangered species such as black-headed ibis, dalmatian pelican, Asian bill storks, darters, and painted storks.

Due to unavailability of restaurants in the area, it’s suggested to carry your own drinks and food. A small interactive museum within its vicinity gives you an opportunity to explore the various bird varieties and check out the different bird sounds.

Narara Marine National Park

Narara Marine National Park enjoys the privilege of being India ’s first marine national park. At a mere distance of 30 km from the city center, the park is home to numerous birds, various marine life forms, coral reefs, and mangroves. It’s a rare and one of a kind beautiful example of marine life in their natural environment. The only place in the country, this marine park has a visible coral which doesn’t require you to dive or snorkel as the water levels are as low as 50 cm. Some of the beaches around its vicinity are shallow and therefore you can only reach there during high tides. Ensure to spare a minimum of 4 hours for a trip to this place and carry your own food. There are no restaurants around the area and visit the place between October to February for the best experience. Also, wear Crocs or footwear with hard soles as walking barefoot is difficult in the sea.

Bal Hanuman Mandir

Towards the south-east corner of the Lakhota lake, there’s Jamnagar’s most famous temple known by the name Bala Hanuman temple. It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is separated from the lake by a broad road. The temple houses idols of Lord Ram, Lakshman, Goddess Sita, and Hanuman. The temple is famous for the continuous chanting of  “Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram” since August 1, 1964. For this, the temple is even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Along with the temple, you can also enjoy walking at the lake. It will be a peaceful experience worth remembering for a long time.

Balachadi Beach

At a mere distance of 27 km from the Jamnagar city center, the Balachadi beach offers perfect tranquillity along the coast of Jamnagar. It’s very famous amongst tourists and the most popular beach in the city, away from the city’s bustling life. Being at this beach especially on the weekends and public holidays is the best thing amongst locals and travellers  The sunrise and sunset are the best sights. Moreover, a full moon night is a great occasion for people to witness the beautiful scene where the amazing moonlight bounces off the sand and reflects the seawater.

Pratap Vilas Palace

Jamnagar was ruled by many kings. Amongst those, Jam Ranjit Singhji was one of the most famous rulers who ruled Nawanagar (back then). He was the pioneer of the massive Pratap Vilas Palace. It is an astounding spot in the city and very popular amongst tourists. The royal residence has a seamless blend of European engineering and Indian carvings. The architecture of this royal palace is similar to the Victoria Memorial Building in Kolkata . The difference is that the vaults of this royal residence were worked by Indian engineering. The use of glass looks very prominent in the three vaults of the Pratap Vilas Palace. The carvings of feathered creatures, blossoms, creepers, leaves, and creatures on the segments add more value to the beauty of the palace.

The disastrous earthquake which shook Gujarat in 2001 severely damaged a few parapets. Moreover, the partition of some upper dividers at the rooftop level of the royal residence was again the result of the tremors. However, the palace still looks elegant and grabs the attention of numerous visitors.

There are multiple attractions and places to see in Jamnagar but one place that dominates the old city is the Lakhota Fort, the original seat of Jamnagar ruler and Ranmal Lake, which surrounds the fort. Gujarat Weather Update, IMD Alert Live: Gujarat has reported four deaths due to relentless rains. According to State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey, “A total of four deaths one each in Morbi and Dahod district and two in Gandhinagar district have been reported so far since Monday.” Meanwhile, heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has severely disrupted railway traffic in central Gujarat, particularly affecting the Vadodara division of Western Railway (WR). On Tuesday, 56 trains were cancelled due to significant waterlogging at three key locations, including Bajwa and Ranoli in Vadodara. Additionally, 15 trains were short-terminated, and 43 trains were diverted to alternate routes. Notable cancellations include the Rajkot-Mumbai Hapa Duronto Express, the Karnavati Double Decker, the Ahmedabad-Howrah Express, the Gujarat Superfast Express, and the Jamnagar Humsafar Express.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for several districts in Gujarat, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Tuesday advised residents to avoid areas prone to waterlogging and exercise extreme caution while traveling. In Vadodara, meanwhile, electricity has been turned off in some areas owing to waterlogging. As a precaution, district administrations have announced the closure of schools and colleges in the affected areas on Tuesday.

The red alert is in effect for the Saurashtra region, including Kutch, Kheda, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Tapi, Navsari, and Valsad. In the latest weather forecast by IMD, thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are likely over Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar and Rajkot. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in several areas including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar , Vadodara, Surat , Navsari, Morbi and Valsad.

Janmashtami Mela, the annual cultural fair organised by the state government in Rajkot city, cancelled following extremely heavy rain on Tuesday. Vendors who had spent around Rs 2 crores for purchasing plots for setting up stalls and amusement rides at the fair to get a full refund, says Rajkot district collector Prabahv Joshi.

Director in-charge Ramashray Yadav at IMD’s regional centre in Ahmedabad warns against ‘Extremely heavy to exceptionally heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely in the Saurashtra region’ on Tuesday.

Since Monday, Gujarat has reported four deaths due to relentless rains. According to State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey, “A total of four deaths one each in Morbi and Dahod district and two in Gandhinagar district have been reported so far since Monday." This brings the total number of deaths in the state this monsoon season to 100.

The heavy rains have taken a major toll on railway traffic with the Western Railway (WR) now cancelling a total of 56 trains in the Vadodara Division, affecting not just Central Gujarat, but also movement between Gujarat and Maharashtra as well as impacting all trains passing through Gujarat to North India.

In a video statement at 12 pm, an official of the WR said that due to severe waterlogging at three locations including Bajwa and Ranoli in Vadodara, a total of 56 trains had been cancelled, 15 short terminated and 43 trains had to be diverted along other routes.

Trains coming to Mumbai from Rajasthan and Jammu have been diverted towards Ratlam, Godhra, Vadodara and Surat. Trains from Maharashtra going to Gujarat and Rajasthan have been either diverted or short-terminated

Several memu trains have been cancelled, especially between Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Major trains that have been cancelled include the Rajkot to Mumbai Hapa Duronto Express, Karnavati double decker, Ahmedabad-Howrah Express, Gujarat Superfast Express and Jamnagar Humsafar Express.

The Western Railway warned that all trains between Gujarat and Maharashtra have been impacted in some manner and that passengers should check the schedule of their trains before planning their journeys.

Amidst fears of flight delays and cancellations in light of the inclement weather, the management of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad warned passengers to allocate extra time for processing and reach the airport a little earlier. Passengers have also been asked to check flight schedules regularly.

Airport officials confirmed that, as of Tuesday morning, there has not been any major impact on flight schedules at this airport. However, flights that had arrived late, were departing late from Ahmedabad. There have not been any flight diversions so far.

Railway traffic in Central Gujarat has been badly impacted due to heavy rainfall in the previous 48 hours. Most affected are trains passing through and operated by the Vadodara division of Western Railway (WR).

With 12 trains cancelled on Tuesday, 5 were short terminated and 6 were run on diverted routes due to waterlogging at Bajwa station.

Gujarat Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey on Tuesday stated, "CM Bhupendra Patel has held a meeting today with all the district officials through videoconference and directed us regarding human life... He directed us that people shouldn't face electricity shortages, medicinal shortages and other needful things. In the coming 2-3 days, rain is expected as forecasted by the IMD, also Janmashtami is there and hence leaves of all the district collectors and concerned officials have been cancelled and they are expected to join the relief and rescue work..."

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning issued at 10 am on Tuesday (valid for three hours):

- Moderate Thunderstorms/Lightning: Expect isolated heavy rainfall ( 15 mm/hr) with wind speeds reaching 40-60 km/h (in gusts) in the districts of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, and Rajkot in Gujarat.

- Light Thunderstorms/Lightning: Expect moderate rainfall (5-15 mm/hr) with wind speeds reaching 40-60 km/h (in gusts) in the districts of Morbi, Surendranagar, Junagarh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Ahmadabad, Gandhinagar, Mahesana, Patan, Khera, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Daman, Banaskantha, Sabar Kantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Tapi, Dangs, and Valsad.

In response to the ongoing heavy rains, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued a crucial safety advisory on Tuesday.

Video of the overflowing Vishwamitri river, causing floods in the Manjalpur area of Vadodara city.

At 9 am on Tuesday, the river is flowing over the 33.75-feet mark in most parts of the city with as many as seven bridges closed due to the floods.

Vadodara city has received 239.50 mm (9.43 inch) rainfall in the last 24 hours until 8 am.

Sardar Sarovar Dam recorded a level of 134.73 meters at 8 am on Tuesday with an inflow: of 323057 Cusecs and discharge from 23 open gates and a Riverbed Powerhouse of 395686 Cusecs. The Canal is also releasing 22046 Cusecs of water.

Electricity supply has been turned off in 6500 of 10000 transformers in the city due to waterlogging. Vadodara Municipal Corporation has also closed the water pumps due to waterlogging in the supply facility.

Heavy rainfall lashed Gujarat in 24 hours until Sunday morning inundating low-lying areas, disrupting normal life and traffic movement. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for the state till September 1.

Five talukas — Vapi, Kaprada, Pardi, Umarpada and Khergam — in the southern districts of Valsad, Surat and Navsari recorded the highest rainfall between 250-330 mm.

Jayesh Khadia, Chief Fire Officer of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES), reported that a bus from Srinath Travels became stuck in an underpass. The rescue team successfully retrieved 25 individuals, including two children, from the stranded vehicle.

An exceptionally heavy rainfall alert was in place in Gujarat and parts of the Saurashtra region for the next few days as torrential downpours battered the state on Monday and Tuesday morning, inundating low-lying areas and killing three people in rain-related incidents, while nearly 20,000 people were evacuated to safer places.

A red alert was sounded for as many as 27 districts of Gujarat for the next three days beginning Tuesday.

The districts in which the red alert has been issued include: Kutch, Morbi, Surendranagar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Dwarka, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Panchmahal, Dahod, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Ahmedabad, Botad, Amreli, Anand, Kheda, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Narmada, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Surat, and Dang.

Meanwhile, an orange alert for rainfall has been issued for the remaining six districts: Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Sabarkantha, and Aravalli.

As per the IMD, strong surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph were very likely over Gujarat, along and off the state's coast and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea till August 28.

On August 29, squally winds reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph were likely to prevail along and off the Gujarat coast and the adjoining northeast Arabian Sea.

The extremely heavy rainfall in Gujarat is due to a depression over Northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining east Rajasthan, which has intensified into a deep depression, according to the IMD.

In the past 24 hours, several districts of the state, including Vadodara, Panchmahal, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Kutch, have received heavy rainfall.

As per data shared by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Tankara taluka in Morbi district and Morva Hadaf in Panchmahal district received 355 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. In addition, Borsad taluka in Anand received 268 mm of rainfall, followed by Vadodara taluka in Vadodara district with 262 mm, and Nadiad taluka in Kheda district with 232 mm.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said South Gujarat received 105 per cent, and Kutch 95.8 per cent of its average annual rainfall for the season, while central, north Gujarat and Saurashtra have received 77 per cent, 70.74 per cent and 91 per cent of rain.

Apart from Gujarat, isolated heavy rainfall was very likely over Chhattisgarh on August 29, 30 and September 1, Konkan and Goa between August 28 and September 1, Madhya Maharashtra between August 29 and September 1 and Vidarbha region on August 29 and 30, the IMD said.

CHIEF MINISTER TAKES STOCK OF SITUATION

Bhupendra Patel held a virtual meeting with district collectors, superintendents of police, and senior civic officials of all major cities to review the current situation. The state education department has declared a holiday for primary schools across the state on Tuesday.

In a tweet, the Chief Minister said he spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the phone to get details of the situation caused by heavy rainfall. He also said he was assured of the necessary assistance, including sending more help from central forces for rescue relief and disaster management in the state if required.

State commissioner of relief Alok Kumar Pandey said in view of the red alert issued by the IMD, all collectors have been asked to cancel leaves taken by their staff.

The Chief Minister also instructed secretaries of concerned departments to take necessary steps, such as restoring electricity in affected areas, Pandey said.

THOUSANDS SHIFTED AS WATER LEVELS IN RIVERS RISE

Hundreds of people were shifted to safer places due to the rise in the water level of rivers and dams. At least 280 people were shifted to safer places from the low-lying areas in Bharuch city after nearly 4 lakh cusecs of water was released into the river Narmada from Sardar Sarovar Dam, officials said.

Alok Kumar Pandey said three people have died in rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours and the total death toll for this season stood at 99.

Amid incessant heavy rainfall in Navsari in south Gujarat and water levels in Purna, Kaveri and other rivers crossing the danger mark, more than 1,500 people have been relocated, collector Agre Kshipra Suryakantrao said.

DAMAGES AND LOSSES DUE TO RAIN FURY

At least seven people are missing after a trolley tractor carrying them got swept away while passing through an overflowing causeway in Halvad taluka of Morbi district. According to officials, they remained untraceable despite a nearly 20-hour search operation involving the NDRF and SDRF.

"An increase in the inflow of water in the river Bharaj due to heavy rainfall upstream damaged the bridge near pillar number three," Chhota Udepur Collector Anil Dhameliya said.

Vadodara, Anand, Kheda and Panchmahals districts received very heavy rainfall on Monday, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses and leaving several persons stranded.
