Best Bars in Budapest

People from all over the world descend upon Budapest each year, with the Hungarian capital’s unique drinking venues acting as one of it’s top draws. There are plenty of stand-out watering holes dotted right across the city, with the 6th district boasting some of the best bars, pubs, and clubs in Europe. From ruin bars and bistros to high-end bars and rooftop venues, there is something for everyone. We’ve put together an ultimate guide to the best bars in Budapest to help you narrow, so go out with your friends and loved-one out there to have a memorable experience on your vacation at Budapest:

Mazel Tov

Mazel Tov is stylish, spacious and already a staple of Budapest’s burgeoning nightlife scene. It is a giant courtyard-cum-cultural space, lined with lush trees and plants, draped in twinkling lights and topped with a glass roof. Tucked away in the lively Jewish District, this cavernous space is Insta-friendly and most definitely worth the hype. It is a great place for evening drinks, their cocktail and pálinka brandy list is impressive, Mazel Tov is also equal parts garden party and a gastronomic destination.

360 Bar

When you want a taste of the high life, there is no better spot for lip-smacking drinks with a breathtaking view guaranteed to distract you from your companions. This rooftop bar offers 360-degree views over the capital, a lengthy wine and cocktail list, and an array of excellent snacks and small plates. If you fancy sunset drinks, be sure to reserve a table beforehand or check out for their full program of summer events, which include ‘Yoga Brunch’ and a series of day parties.

HáromHolló

HáromHolló bar, located right in the city center, is the fruit of an entirely different philosophy.HáromHolló, named after the favorite watering hole of EndreAdy, one of Hungary’s poet, occupies a three-story space that fuses a bar with a concert venue and an exhibition space. On any given week, they might host a small exhibit about ArvoPärt, a photography pop-up, and a contemporary jazz concert. Most patrons are socially sensitive, musically-inclined, left-wing intellectuals from Budapest. Don’t be surprised, however, if Teutonic chatter fills the high-ceilinged space, as one of the owners is a German expat.

Boutiq’ Bar

Boutiq’ Bar

It is a highly atmospheric red-walled underground cocktail bar that dubs itself a ‘neo-speakeasy’.For the mad cocktails that come in science lab beakers, plastic smoothie cups, and old honey pots, with an even more delightful array of accouterments. For a real showstopper, order one of the tiki rum cocktails served in Easter Island-style moai.

Szimpla Kert

Szimpla Kert

The trend of revamping former factories and car parks into almost fully functioning watering holes, while allowing the character of the buildings to remain (by keeping the Communist-era junk and crumbling courtyards), started with SzimplaKert back in 2002. When it moved to its current home in the Jewish quarter in 2004, it became the epicenter of Budapest’s nightlife scene – a title it still deservedly holds today. Despite the club having reached mega-famous status, it’s weird and welcoming ethos remains the same. Come for the reputation, stay to have a drink in an open-top East German Trabant car or converted bathtub, listen to some seriously heavy electronic beats, or just soak up the surreal atmosphere.

Racskert

A former car park converted into a relaxed ruin bar with graffiti-covered walls and something of a festival vibe. Racskert is one of the most favorite spots of Budapest people, and with cheap beer, vegan snacks, a plant-lined garden and a regular program of live folk music, it is really no wonder out there. As is the case with most ruin bars, you won’t find anyone taking reservations or bookings and it’s a come-as-you-are vibe.

KNRDY

This haven for American and Australian food devotees attracts many US tourists or businessmen who long for a good a piece of Omaha or prime steak, or for filet mignon made from Australian Wagyu. Moreover, put it top of your list if you want to have a special tequila, whiskey, rum or cognac: in the past few years they have improved their cocktail list as well.

Best Bar Restaurants in Budapest

Spurred by booming tourism and growing markets as well as helping the gastronomy needs of locals, new restaurants are popping up across the city, offering everything from updated takes on local peasant fare like goulash soup to Michelin-starred modernist meals. Hungarian cuisine offers some of the most delectable dishes in the world. Combine all these amazing elements with a luxurious journey, and you end up with one of the best dining and booze tours in Budapest.

If you are looking for the hottest restaurants in Budapest, here is what to expect: dependable dishes with culinary acrobatics, stylish interiors, luxury and standard plates by local outlets, and a crowd consisting of tourists and chic locals. We have come up with some of the best and premium restaurants available in Budapest so you don’t find yourself in the hassle of looking for:

Onyx

Onyx sits at the top of Budapest’s fine dining scene, and it is also the city’s only restaurant with two Michelin stars. Chef Ádám Mészáros marries local ingredients with French technique, and the results are unfailingly delicious. Expect a classic fine dining experience complete with glass chandeliers, white linen tablecloths, and tableside service. The six-course tasting menu of this superb restaurant with wine is really awesome, which certainly is not cheap, but bear in mind that you would need to shell out even more for comparable haute cuisine elsewhere in Europe.

Bambi Café

In Communist Hungary, eszpresszós were popular hangouts serving cheap coffee, beer, and basic food. They are fast disappearing, but Bambi Eszpresszó, which opened in 1961, continues to thrive. With its original interior furnishings, stereotypically dour waitstaff, and eclectic neighborhood regulars, Bambi offers a journey back in time. While it’s appropriate to go there any time of the day, a morning visit for scrambled eggs, frankfurters, and a cup of coffee on the outdoor terrace is especially choice.

Belvárosi Disznótoros

Belvárosi Disznótoros

Local office workers form a line at lunchtime in front of this standing-only downtown eatery, which specializes in traditional meat-heavy dishes. Patrons can choose from a wide variety and an array of to-be-prepared or just-prepared meats, ranging from Serbian cevapi to braised duck legs. The main event here is the sausage, which includes paprika-laced, blood, and pork-liver varieties. Follow the locals and pair a sausage with a generous portion of mustard, pickled vegetables, and a few slices of bread. Prices are rock bottom.

Café Kör

This downtown restaurant is a neighborhood institution famed for its prewar Budapest ambience. In keeping with the bourgeois tastes of the period, the interior boasts a Persian-carpeted dining room and curvy Thonet Bentwood chairs. For a truly local experience, visit at lunchtime, when businesspeople from the nearby financial district flock for cold fruit soups (in the summer), veal stew, oversized schnitzel, and vegetable stews studded with meatballs. Owner Gábor Molnár’s cheerful presence has been a constant since the opening in 1995.

Menza

It is a kitsch café with a modern menu and a few unusual twists, where you will enjoy contemporary dining in a retro setting. Menza means ‘canteen’ in English and the hip décor is a nod to the country’s Socialist era. But don’t let that throw you – the food is anything but basic, with highlights including cold strawberry soup, duck leg with ratatouille, and oven-baked kohlrabi stuffed with minced veal.

Dorado Café

Dorado Café

Specialty coffee has spread across Budapest at a head-spinning pace in recent years. Dorado Café, located in the hip former Jewish Quarter, stands out thanks to owners Emese Görföl, a local Hungarian, and Mario Jimenez, a Spanish native, who created an unpretentious and tastefully designed cafe. Go for the cold brews made from lightly roasted Ethiopian beans, or, if tea is more your speed, try the aromatic chai latte.

Borkonyha

Borkonyha is a Michelin-starred restaurant with meat-laden dishes and more than 200 wines. This restaurant is not just for Michelin glory hunters, foodies will also love the first-class menu too. Although a trip here won’t be the cheapest meal of your Budapest break, it is hard not to be impressed by what’s available on the five-course and à la carte lists, whether it is lettuce soup with scallops or quail with pearl barley and cranberries. The simple but flavorful desserts are not to be missed.

Bock Bisztró

Bock Bisztró

It is an award-winning restaurant with a wine list longer than your table. József Bock is the man behind the wine list at this restaurant. His ancestors have been making wine for nine generations in the Villány region of Hungary. More than two dozen of the family’s wines are on the menu at this little gem in the 7th District, along with other vintages. Food-wise, the joint keeps it old school too, with a menu of traditional Hungarian dishes and classic local flavors. Think steak, beef tartare ‘sandwiches’ and cucumber salads. Make sure to book, you are unlikely to get a table otherwise.

Costes Restaurant

budapest nightlife tour

Budapest’s first Michelin-starred restaurant is also the only one helmed by a female chef, Eszter Palágyi. Her elaborate dishes feature flavorful wild game, inventive dessert variations, and playful amuse bouches inspired by Hungarian peasant fare. For the full experience, pair the seven-course tasting menu with a slate of premium local wines.

Stand25 Bisztró

Stand25 Bisztró

Chefs and partners Szulló Szabina and Tamás Széll left their Michelin-starred tasting menu endeavor in 2016 to launch a casual restaurant specializing in unadulterated, traditional Hungarian food inside a market hall-turned-food court. Within a year of opening, the unlikely Stand25 received a Bib Gourmand, and today the space is almost always found filled to it’s capacity. Must-try dishes include the goulash soup, lightened with hints of chopped celery; the layered potatoes; and the somlói galuska, a rum-soaked local dessert.

Központ Cafe

Központ Cafe&Bistro

Located near the arched, red-bricked edifice signaling the entry of the old Jewish Quarter, Központ is a popular haunt of Budapest’s thirtysomething liberal establishment. During the day, Központ functions as a specialty café, drawing hipster foreigners, whereas, at night-time, the crowd turns more local as journalists, musicians, and people from the fashion industry appear. Note that drinks are a bit more expensive here than at other places on this list. The best night is Friday, it is not unusual that the throng overflows to the sidewalks until the wee hours. Although mainly a bar, on some nights Központ doubles as a dance floor with DJs spinning electronic music.

Café Kor

It is one of a popular all-day spot in Budapest, with impeccable service and typical Hungarian dishes. Just around the corner from St Stephen’s Basilica, the popular Café Kor is busy from breakfast through lunch to dinner. Make a reservation or arrive before the evening rush, daily specials are served only until they run out, which is usually can be expected any time . . .

Dobrumba

Dobrumba is a lively and trendy 7th District restaurant that looks to the Middle East and the Mediterranean for inspiration. So, if you are looking for a break from traditional Hungarian, this Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-leaning restaurant should be one of your go-to’s. The founders’ influences span far and wide, picking up on Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Moroccan, Israeli, Lebanese, Georgian, Armenian and Turkish flavors. The drinks menu at Dobrumba is equally varied.

The best nightlife in Budapest

A38 Boat

1.  A38 Boat

What is it? Principally but not exclusively a live venue, the A38 fills a former Ukrainian stone-carrying cargo ship with party fun, after hours and as the sun sets. Concerts take place in the cavernous hull – backstage feels like the set of some seaborne Cold War movie – while DJ sessions keep things swinging on the upper deck.

Why go? Uniquely Budapest, with prime views of river life and cityscape, the A38 feels a world away from city streets yet bobs below Petőfi Bridge, served by the frequent (and all-night) 4-6 tram. Decent restaurant and regularly changing gallery also on board.

2.  Akvárium Klub

What is it? The most central nightspot in Budapest, the Aquarium Club is also one of its most prominent in terms of big-name DJs and attractive live acts. Filling a sunken courtyard with split-level bar terracing beside what was the city’s main bus station, the Akvárium consists of several indoor spaces that can either be raucous or intimate, depending on the event and hall chosen to host it.

Why go? Convenient for everywhere in Budapest, the Akvárium is ideal for dipping into and out of over the course of your visit. If Bavarian folk-punk isn’t to your liking one night, the house party afterwards might just float your boat. Alongside, the pool at street level lends itself to lazy sundowners.

360 Bar

3.  360 Bar

What is it?  Atop one of Budapest’s most revered buildings, a fin-de-siècle department store on the showcase boulevard of Andrássy út, the 360 Bar  not only encompasses full panoramic views of the city but goes year-round, too. Here, cocktails and fine wines temper the heat of high summer, cosy communal igloos and warming drinks take the edge off winter. DJs feature throughout, along with prime snacks and those gobsmacking views.

Why go?  Time your visit for around sunset and you’ll soon see why. Budapest never looked better – but make sure to reserve a table. Either side of Christmas, book an igloo, gather a few friends and get toasty – each one is individually heated.

Pontoon

4.  Pontoon

What is it? Simply put, a floating festival in downtown Budapest. Pontoon has moved locations over the summers but never strays too far from one of the city’s central crossing points, currently Chain Bridge. Thanks to generous opening hours of 5pm-4am, you can dance your ass off to hip-hop, Latino and electro beats till the trams start running beside the Danube, taking advantage of the chill zone and quality Mexican street food to keep you going.

Why go? For unpretentious partying on one of Europe’s great rivers

Szimpla Kert

5.  Szimpla Kert

What is it?  The mother of all ruin bars, the legendary nightspot that set the trend for transforming a neglected building in the Jewish Quarter into a warren-like bohemian locale characterised by mismatching, skip-found furniture, junk-shop decor and fairylights. It's now it’s a tourist hotspot with beer prices to match, but o n the right night, with the right crowd, it can be magical. Szimpla Kert doubles up as a farmers’ market on Sunday, with a little live music thrown in.

Why go?  If it’s your first time in Budapest, it’s a must. If you’re an old hand, make sure to also check out Kisüzem or Fekete Kutya nearby. If you’re a Hungarian, well, you might be over Szimpla by now.

Dürer Kert

6.  Dürer Kert

What is it?  For many years, Dürer Kert was one of Budapest’s most essential live venues, a haven of alternative music and punk/metal festivals set in a former sanatorium for the Communist elite. A leafy location alongside City Park added to its charm.

Upping sticks and moving across the river during the pandemic was a statement – yes, sir, Buda can boogie. Not only that, but this once strictly spiky spot has expanded its remit to embrace anything slightly off the wall, be it poppy or even jazzy. Gone is the bare brick, this is a garden party, with space to chuck a Frisbee around, store your bike and sample the superior craft beers and street food while the band’s soundchecking. 1920s’ themed dance parties another speciality.

Why go? For interesting live music beneath the stars shared with a convivial, multi-generational crowd. And DJ parties, too.

7.  Központ

What is it? Touting itself as a ‘performance and event venue’, Központ is where DJs spin, musicians play acoustic sets and Hungarians of a certain bohemian mindset hang out. It’s on Madách tér, the pedestrianised square that many cross for the bland frenzy of Gozsdu Udvar nearby. Here, a more discerning, local crowd frequents the bars and cafés, particularly Hivatal, which is the size of a phone box if they still had phone boxes. Központ is more accommodating in both senses of the word – if you’re a first-time foreigner, order an affordable beer, pull up a chair and enjoy the vibe. You’ll be welcome.

Why go? For a laid-back night (mainly) in the company of Hungarians, and to discover some live sounds you may not have been expecting.

Ötkert Club

8.  Ötkert Club

What is it?  This central spot offers a slightly more polished clubbing experience than its edgier counterparts. Ötkert’s magic takes place in an impressive, restored 19th-century building.

Why go?  On most summer nights, Ötkert boasts five DJs playing a mix of commercial music, R&B and hip hop across two rooms. They also have a large terrace which is utterly perfect in July and August. If you’re here in winter, don’t worry – it comes equipped with outdoor heating for colder nights.

Instant/Fogas

9.  Instant/Fogas

What is it? Signposted by an illustration of a set of dentures, Fogas rode the first wave of ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter, off-the-wall and oh so slightly underground. When the more party-focused Instant was forced to close in District VI, the two venues joined forces to spread out in this huge complex of courtyards and bars. Sticking to the ruin bar theme, the decor comprises hanging installations and bizarre accoutrements, with an open area for starlit drinking.

Why go?  This all-in-one option is ideal for big groups, who can lose themselves in the maze of spaces, sink a few cocktails on the terrace, take each other on at ping pong and dance way beyond sun-up.

Széchenyi Baths

10.  Széchenyi Baths

What is it?  Szechenyi Baths are so much more than a decadent location in which to slot in some sauna time – they’re also home to one of the city’s most raucous night-time events, the Sparty . Think of a full-on rave in a thermal spa. And that means pumping house music, pricey cocktails and an anything-goes atmosphere.

Why go?  When else will you get to party in the spectacular setting of a 20th-century bathhouse? This one’s not for the faint of heart, but you’ll be surrounded by plenty of other tourists and be able to swim/dance the night away in a giant pool illuminated by lasers and flashing lights. All-male stag parties are not welcome, and security is on-hand all through the night to create a safe environment.

High Note Skybar

11.  High Note Skybar

What is it? The rooftop cocktail bar of a music-themed, five-star hotel, at eye level with the huge clock in the dome of St Stephen’s Basilica. To reach the High Note , you should cross the lobby floor comprised entirely of piano keys to take a separate lift and be greeted by smart yet personable staff. They then show you to whichever slice of cityscape sunset you fancy gawping at while you sample one of Marcell Sárközi’s inventive, seasonal drink mixes. You can also hire an upper space for all this with vertigo thrown in.

Why go? Because it is utterly, must-Insta-this-immediately memorable. Plus, you would never know, from the discreet if stylish door at street level near the Basilica, what awaits you far too many floors up.

Vittula

12.  Vittula

What is it? A bare-brick cellar of serious drinking hidden away from the world, practically across the street from the glitzy, historic New York Café.

There are some who say that Vittula had its heyday when it felt like the set of a Jim Jarmusch movie, all obscure rockabilly tunes, edgy characters and bizarre bar talk. Others would argue that it had its day on prime-time US TV, when Jennifer Lawrence described to the chat-show host the bar fight she had fallen into here – yes, the Hollywood star graced this very (wonky) staircase.

And then there are the nighthawk regulars of today, still drawn to the place for its cheap drinks poured by a pixie with aquamarine hair adept at selecting little-known Alice Cooper tunes and dealing with whatever flotsam and jetsam the Budapest night might bring.

Why go? Because there’s always a last place after the last place, and that last place is always Vittula.

13.  Zsír

What is it? An in-the-know, cult hangout deep in District VIII with a live acoustic agenda and plentiful pavement tables. Run by a laid-back American and his able Magyar accomplices, Zsír fills a former wine cellar with alternative sounds and lively bar chatter that continues at street level.

In the dictionary, Zsír means ‘fat’, ie the non-meat part of your lamb chop. In street Hungarian, it means, ‘cool’, ‘boss’ and other such affirmative phrases. Like the slang, it may not be here forever, but while it is, Zsír might be well worth tucking into.

Why go? To explore the underbelly of alternative Budapest nightlife, well away from the hordes swarming the District VII party hub.

Boutiq’Bar

14.  Boutiq’Bar

What is it?  A highly atmospheric red-walled underground cocktail bar that dubs itself a ‘neo-speakeasy’.

Why go?  For the mad cocktails that come in science lab beakers, plastic smoothie cups and old honey pots, with an even more delightful array of accoutrements. For a real showstopper, order one of Boutiq 's tiki rum cocktails, served in Easter Island-style  moai .

The best Budapest night tours & experiences with locals

With its Baroque buildings and breathtaking boulevards that have earned it the nickname “the Paris of the East”, Budapest is beauty personified. It’s impossible to imagine that a city so striking by day could be as impressive by night – but Budapest only really starts showing off when the sun goes down and its world-famous nightlife hubs take center stage. A Budapest night tour with City Unscripted is the perfect way to skip the tourist traps and get right into the good stuff. You could spend your night ticking off the top 10 sights in your guidebook – or, with a local guide by your side, you could experience the Budapest nightlife scene exactly as the locals do!

Meet some of our Budapest local hosts

Like the people who travel with us, they have different backgrounds and interests – but they’re all so passionate about the place they call home, they choose to spend their free time sharing it with the like-minded travelers matched to them.

When the tourist traps empty out and the locals take back their city, Budapest really comes alive. On a Budapest night tour, you’ll be able to indulge in all the secret pastimes of the people who call the city home – and feel the true spirit of the city in the process. With a local guide by your side, you’ll discover the best things to do in Budapest at night that aren’t necessarily in your guidebook. Just pack your stamina and spend an unforgettable evening on a Budapest night tour exploring the hole-in-the-wall haunts and hidden gems where locals gather after hours.

Tourists enjoying a night out and the busy atmosphere of a ruin bar in Budapest

It’s no small feat, but the Budapest nightlife scene is known for being one of the best in all of Europe. With everything from tiny taverns and ramshackle ruin bars to sleek, sophisticated nightclubs, all revelers are equally rewarded on Budapest night tour. Maybe you’ll sip a drink at a rooftop bar high up in one of the city’s Art Nouveau masterpieces, dance the night away at a speaker-shaking nightclub, or perhaps you’re simply content to take a moonlit stroll, stopping for a pastry at a coffee house that only closes at midnight. Whatever your style, a Budapest night tour does the job.

Group of tourists enjoying drinks at a local guide's favorite watering hole in Budapest

It’s impossible to talk about Budapest nightlife without bringing up Szimpla Kert, Hungary’s iconic nightlife spot housed in an old stove factory. Today, the party scene in the Hungarian capital is known for ruin bars just like Szimpla – nightclubs and drinking holes set up in dilapidated buildings. The eerily apocalyptic atmosphere of socialist-era decor makes for a night out that’s more than memorable. A Budapest night tour with us is the perfect time to explore the best of the city’s ruin bars, scoping out the bric-à-brac and sipping a cocktail at a mismatched table and chair.

Latest reviews from our guests

Very nice tour and he took us to a fantastic strudel shop!

Richard was flexible, informative, and entertaining as he lead eight of us on a 4 hour private tour. We had proposed an ambitious tour through the Jewish Quarters to City Park and back. However, as we approached City Park and began to flag, he adjusted our plan so that instead of walking back to the hotel we took the underground, which he had told use we should experience, back to city center and closer to our Hotel. Our party peppered Richard with questions and discussions about how Budapest compared to other cities, the origins of the Hungarian language and the Ottoman influences on Budapest. As a history teacher Richard kept the conversation going with interesting insights. We had a physicist amongst use who was ecstatic to hear that Edward Teller went to High School nearby and oohed and awed over the plague on the school listing other Noble laureate scientists who attended the school. Richard knew all the names and the history of the school and scientists. As usual with Viator, arranging the tour, communicating with Richard before hand to customize the tour and meeting up with and being dropped off at the hotel went smoothly and easily.

September 2023

Richard took us around town as though we were visiting family. He made the history, [people and life of Hungry and Budapest come alive. He was patient with all our questions and genuinely interested in what we wished to learn rather than follow a scripted tour- can see why it is city 'unscripted'. Richard- thank you! You were amazing. Our 13 and 15 year old loved this as well and were touched by your stories and history. We certainly got to feel and experience the heart beat of this amazing city. THANK YOU!

Katherine B

What a spectacular way to experience Budapest! Richard was so knowledgable and he was so patient with all our questions. He navigated the tour on what we were interested in and what we were asking questions about. He was interested n what we wanted to learn about the city rather than just giving us a spell. He chatted to us about life, history and behind the scenes peaks of this amazing country of Hungry and city of Budapest. he made it all come alive, its people and culture so we felt a part of it. It was like being shown around town by your older brothers best friend. THANK YOU RICHARD! We had truely an amazing day!

Eastern European Woman – Free Dating Guides for Foreigners

Planning to visit the Red light district in Budapest? Use my Guide!

red light district budapest

Budapest is one of the classic European city that offers lively nightlife with a heavyweight class. The site includes everything from iconic ruin pubs, underground electronic clubs, raves in the thermal baths, and wine bars. The night gets better in Budapest and the individuals can expect more in Budapest than in other cities.

It is considered that the nightlife at Budapest is the best in the world, however, it also attracts some con artists and a lot of holes in the wall.

Visiting the red light district in Budapest as a part of that famous Hungarian nightlife culture. But have you noticed that there is very little information online? I am sure you are wondering where you have to go, what does it cost, what are the scams and many more worries that might cross your mind.

No problem – I get it. Partying, dating and picking up foreign women can be a bit tricky. Even if you dating game is not going as planned, visiting a red light district and brothel is something you need to plan ahead.

And guess what? I will help you with that! I have been visiting Budapest for years now and in this blogpost I will describe all the in’s and out’s about sex tourism in the capital.

If you are interesting in finding a Hungarian girlfriend for the week I recommend you sign up to this arrangement dating up site . You pay and they will… Well, you can make that arrangement together. 😉

Know Before You Go – The Budapest Nightlife

When you are planning to visit Budapest, then don’t forget to get your best party pants because the city will give you the best nightlife that you can ever imagine. Budapest is a city that never sleeps. If you spend a day discovering the culture and history of the city, then you might want to take some rest.  Because, most of these pubs, clubs, and bar in the city do not open until late hours, at 18:00 and many of them will be open till the next morning.

But, make sure you have enough money and time if you are planning to spend the entire night. If you want to party till dawn and enjoy the beautiful sightseeing, then you have to stay in the city for a few days. I recommend at least 3 days – Any less and you will regret it for sure.

Visiting The Red Light District

The red light district in Budapest is unofficially around Rákóczi tér and József körút . The Hungarian Government made both legal and regulated prostitution since 1999. This means the visitors are permitted to have an intimacy for money as long as they pay taxes and maintain legal documents as per the law.

But of course things were not always like this. During my stay in Budapest I actually did some research for this blogpost and I found out some interesting facts about the Hungarian sex industry and how it all started.

Girl Friendly Hotels in Budapest

A quick fact check.

According to the reports, it is evaluated that the prostitution industry in Budapest along with pornography produces more than one billion dollars yearly in taxes. But, the local establishments have refused to allocate red-light zones though they have the power to do so for more than eighteen years.

With that being said. Over the years the industry has been moving more and more for the streets and into the apartments. With the uprise of the internet, most girls just rent and apartment with three other girls and do online advertising for their services.

Of course – these are a bit more high level prostitutes but compared to the old days you will find less and less streetworkers. That does not mean they are nowhere to be found. You just have to know where to look.

Street workers

Street workers can be found everywhere. I made an easy overview for you to check out. Make sure you always negotiate about the prices and that you use protection. Most girls come out at around 11pm.

  •  Szabadkai street. In front of Meridian hotel
  • Vaci Utca street. Close to the Burger King
  • Nearby the Sofitel Budapest hotel.
  • Nepliget Park next to the Planetarium
  • Intercontinental Budapest

For information only: On average girls ask for HUF 9,000 (30 Euro) for half an hour and about HUF 11,000 (37 Euro) for an hour. On the street the girls are always more expensive. They start pretty high and it is up to you to discuss a final price. They normally start at HUF 22,000 (72 Euro) per hour. Make sure you always have cash with you.

Tips and Safety

However, the red-light zone is not a safe place.

Tourists are suggested to avoid almost all strip clubs, peep shows, or any other kind of entertainments connected to the sex industry. There are quite a few incidents that are connected to tourists, they were robbed, tricked, and sometimes beaten up by huge goons. It is very important to stay safe always, both health-wise and physically if you plan to go to that particular neighborhood.

Hungary also does not have a good reputation for its sex industry, because it is a supply, destination, and transit country for women trafficking from other Eastern European countries just to get sexually oppressed.

Dating Up in Budapest

Not all men are interested in prostitutes. I understand that. It is always a hassle and you know never if you get a girls with good skills or get into a fight with some angry ass pimp. 😉

Over the last few years Dating Up (Formerly known as Sugar Dating) has become more and more popular in Hungary. Especially girls from Budapest sign up to arrangement websites to pay for they rent, college degree or new outfit.

What you get in return for your cash? Well that is the best part as you and the girl can decide that right away! Love, cuddles, massage, sex or just chats .. anything is possible!

Sign up for free here!

Common Scams

The most common scam that you will encounter in Budapest is that you will be forced to pay very expensive bills. This scam occurs mostly when a group of attractive women approach a group of men and hang out with them. These girls will take these men to their favorite restaurant or bar where the victims will be forced to pay thousands of Euros.  If you don’t have enough money, then the big personality men will take you to the ATM to withdraw the balance.

It is advisable not to go to the clubs that are recommended by an unreliable source. Also, avoid visiting the clubs that looks dingy and empty. Remember, if anybody tempts you to take into an empty bar by offering a good deal, and then stay away from those deals, because some clubs in Budapest are not worth trying as its waste of time.

This happens mostly in dodgy strip clubs and other places. It does not happen often when you visit escorts or well-known brothels.

The dodgy strip clubs focus mostly on stag-do people, which are an easy target as they a most often super drunk and loud.

Most of the taxi drivers are also into this scam as they will suggest their favorite bar and they will charge a big fair to take you there.  If you face any of these incidents during your stay in Budapest, then call the local police immediately, the number is 112.  Also, make sure to report the incident happened in the Budapest to the Ministry so that they can close the business.

Hi dear how much one night stand with girls in hotel of cost

Hi Badul, Sorry but we just provide information and not services or prices. Thank you for understanding.

Hi john Kindly tell me if there is hotels in pudaest offeriing girls in rooms

Yes – any of the girl friendly hotels.

Hi, Can you tell me what VIP lap dance can involve. Would sexual favours be on offer, over And above monies paid across at the till from the menu. For example, if cash were offered in the VIP private lap dance, would this be accepted.

That really depends on the bar and type of girls. But some girls do offer more, but 9 out of 10 times it will be after working hours. 🙂

I will go to Hungary at the end of September because of work reasons and I will spend two days in Budapest. I would need some suggestion about a good strip club where you can watch girls and not to spend tons of money with drinks and tips… I prefer to pick up a street girl , cos, I always can figure out if she is cute or not. I have no particular budget , so, if someone else has may same ” needs ” , I would be very glad to get some good suggestion. I have not yet book a hotel so, I would like to know some good hotels where the receptionist is ” tolerant ” and not into ” stellar ” tips Thanks in advance Omar

Hi, omar all the above hotels are good. Check out P1 Klub. Always have a good time there.

– John

Also, could you recommend a good escort girls website for Budapest, please

Many thanks

It means you can bring back (working) girls to your room without too much hassle.

Get ready for a night of good food , Hungarian wines, dancing and gorgeous views . During this special evening tour, you'll get to experience Budapest by night.

What will you experience during this evening tour?

  • See Budapest illuminated by city lights.
  • Enjoy spectacular views of Buda and Pest from the Gellért Hill.
  • Treat your taste buds to traditional Hungarian cuisine.
  • Have fun during a lively folklore show.

Castle Hill, Buda Castle, chain bridge and more sights lit up at night

Budapest is one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe , and some even call it “Paris of the East” . With beautiful buildings, such as the Hungarian State Opera House, St Stephen's Basilica, Vajdahunyad Castle, Central Market Hall and many others, we can totally see why it is associated with the French capital. A visit to Budapest, however, is not complete without seeing it at night. Budapest by night is quite a different experience than by day. So once you've had a stroll around the Erzsébet square, Gozsdu Courtyard, Jewish Quarter and the Buda Castle in the daytime, we invite you to see Budapest at night.

Ride around the city at night

Our Budapest by night tour comes with a hotel pick-up and drop-off , so you don't have to worry about arriving by public transport. To start off, we will drive you around Budapest so that you can see some of its biggest attractions illuminated at night. And what a sight it is! We'll pass, for example, by the Fisherman's Bastion and the Buda Castle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), as well as Budapest's famous Chain Bridge . You'll also have the chance to take some spectacular panoramic shots of this beautiful city and the Danube (Europe's second-longest river after the Volga) from Gellert Hill, where we will stop for a short night walk.

Gellért Hill — our number 1 for panoramic views of Budapest

Although not an obvious destination for many tourists who come to Budapest, Gellert Hill ( Gellérthegy ) is quite popular among the locals. They like to relax here during weekends and watch how the sun sets in the evenings. The hill is not very high, but at 235 metres it is one of the highest points in Budapest. Situated on the Buda side and in between the Elisabeth Bridge and the Liberty Bridge, it gives a spectacular view of both sides of the Danube river, allowing you to see pretty much all of Budapest. We think there's no better place to visit if you want to enjoy a spectacular view of Budapest and take some stunning photographs.

What else is the hill known for?

Apart from offering great views, Gellert Hill is home to some other attractions. Among the most popular is the Citadella fortress (Citadel), which is a symbol of both oppression and liberty. It was built in the mid-19th century by the Habsburg rulers after the Hungarian uprising and later used also by Nazis and Communists. This massive fortress can be seen from a far distance thanks to the 40-metre Statue of Liberty that stands at its entrance.

Visitors may also hear about this hill because of the Gellert Baths complex ( Gellért gyógyfürdő ), which, although less popular than Szechenyi Baths, is said to offer the best experience in the city. This thermal spa, founded in 1918, is placed in a beautiful building (built in the Art Nouveau style) with a rich interior. Apart from a number of geothermal pools, you can get a variety of spa treatments here.

Embrace Hungarian culture

After seeing Budapest at night, we invite you to a unique dining experience . You've probably heard that paprika is an important ingredient in Hungarian cuisine, but have you had the chance to taste any Hungarian dishes? Among the most traditional meals in Hungary, you'll find the likes of gulyás (goulash), töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage leaves) or halászlé (Fisherman’s soup).

Get ready for a Hungarian dining experience

If you haven't had the opportunity to visit any local restaurants while in Budapest, this will be your chance. After spending some time on Gellert Hill, our guide will take you to a local restaurant where you can taste what Hungarian cuisine is about. The dining experience consists of a three-course meal and Hungarian wine on the side. Yum!

Have fun during a folklore show

To make the evening dinner even more fun, there will be a traditional folklore show . The performers will wear folk costumes and dance to folk music. If you like to dance, don't be afraid to join in on the fun! After this evening, you'll have a good taste of Hungary and its culture.

Why book this Budapest by night tour?

  • A unique way to spend the evening in Hungary's capital.
  • Gorgeous views of Budapest and the Danube without the need to climb up the hill (transport provided).
  • Pick-up from a meeting point and drop-off at the hotel are included.
  • You'll be accompanied by an experienced guide.
  • Get a small taste of the local culture.
  • Convenience — we will take care of all the planning so that you can fully relax and enjoy your time.

Quick tips from MrShuttle on other fun things to do

Not ready for the night to end? You've had your fill of tasty food and wine, but want to experience more of Budapest's nightlife? Although not part of our tour, here are some tips on more things you can do at night.

Cruise down the Danube river

If you're visiting Budapest in the summer months, hopping on a boat to experience the views from the Danube is a great idea. Cruises are very popular here, and you can even join a dinner cruise if looking for a romantic way to spend the night with your partner.

Visit the famous ruin bars

If you want to do your own type of pub crawl, you can visit a few of Budapest's underground bars (commonly known as ruin bars). These places can be found primarily in the former Jewish ghetto in previously abandoned buildings that would have been destroyed otherwise. Ruin pubs with their mismatched furniture and sometimes rough looks are great for fans of quirky spaces or those who want to experience Budapest's nightlife scene.

Attend a concert in St Stephen's Basilica

Are you a fan of music and live performances? Make sure to check out the organ concerts inside St Stephen's Basilica (named after Hungary's first king). These performances take place on Thursday evenings between March and December. You can also find some concerts held at Matthias church or the Palace of Art.

13 amazing things to do in budapest at night [2024].

Budapest is a beautiful city that has everything you could want for a European mini-break.

It’s a city steeped in history, with a mesmerising urban landscape that just begs to be explored.

From taking in the views from the Fisherman’s Bastion to touring Buda castle, t here are so many great attractions to visit during the daytime.

However, did you know that there are also many great things to do in Budapest at night too?

Yep, when the sun sets on Budapest the list of things to do doesn’t become less varied.

There are plenty of activities, cool bars and sights to see at night-time.

So if you’re in need of a little inspiration, here are some of my favourite things to do in Budapest at night.

1. Explore the ruin bars

people-sat-around-drinking-in-dark-quirky-indie-bar-szimpla-kert

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the city’s infamous ruin bars .

Built across Budapest’s old District VII neighbourhood (the old Jewish Quarter) after WWII in the ruins of abandoned buildings, stores and lots, these bars continue to be a popular attraction for visitors.

They look fairly unassuming from the outside but have a tardis-like wonder to them once you enter.

With bars on different levels, dancing classes in corners, wacky decor, art plastered all over the walls, and eclectic furniture, ruin bars are so fun to explore.

(Especially if you’re a little tipsy!)

Each bar has its own quirks and is full of character and vibrancy.

Some of the best ones are Szimpla Kert, Corvin Teto, and Fogasház.

But with a quick Google, you’ll be able to find many more great options depending on where you are and what kind of vibe you’re looking for.

2. Watch the sunset from Gellert Hill

view-over-budapest-from-gellert-hill-at-sunset

Address: Citadella stny. 350, 1118

In a city known for its stunning architecture, getting a good vantage point to watch the sunset is a must.

Gellert Hill is located in the 1st and 11th districts of the city and getting to the top is a little bit of a climb (around a 20-30 minute hike). But don’t worry, it’s definitely worth the effort.

At the top of the summit is the Citadella, a 19th-century fortress built in 1851.

If you’ve got some time to spare before sitting down to watch the sunset you can explore the structure and read up on its history.

There are also food options on the way up if you’re feeling peckish.

This means you can really turn this sunset-seeking trip into a proper evening out.

Seeing the orange skies reflect off the river Danube and cast a warm glow over the city is a real treat, so if you have the time (and the weather is on your side) then definitely try and squeeze this into your Budapest itinerary .

3. Take a stroll and grab dinner by the Danube

budapest-royal-palace-across-the-danube-river-at-night

The Spoon address: Vigadó tér 3. kikötő, 1052

Raqpart address: Jane Haining rkp., 1051

The Danube is the second-longest river in Europe and one of Budapest’s most famous features.

At night it’s wonderful to see lights from the buildings reflect off the water.

Plus, walking alongside the river is a great way to see both sides of the city.

There are plenty of restaurants spaced out along the riverside, so this could be a great option for a scenic dinner.

A super popular dining option is Spoon The Boat which sits on the river.

Upon boarding the ship you’ll find three restaurants, and five bars and terraces which serve Hungarian-Oriental fusion cuisine and a wide variety of drinks.

You’re really spoilt for choice here!

However, make sure to book in advance for this one because the boat’s panoramic views are extremely popular.

Also if you’re in Budapest in the summer, one of my favourite spots to get a drink is Raqpart , an outside bar next to the Chain Bridge.

From here you can enjoy a view of Buda Castle, Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion.

You can grab some traditional Hungarian food here too and at night it turns into an open-air club!

4. Go clubbing at Instant

people-clubbing-at-instant-ruin-bar-at-night

Address: Akácfa u. 51, 1073

Speaking of clubbing, although Instant is technically a ruin bar it deserves a separate dedication on this list of things to do in Budapest at night.

It’s the biggest ruin bar in Budapest, with two huge courtyards and eight bars.

And the best part is that they all stay open until 6 am every day of the week.

Keeping on trend with the other underground bars, Instant has a surreal, wacky design with pool tables, live concerts and dance floors all in one space for an eclectic night out.

It’s free entry and there are reasonably priced drinks.

What more could you want from a night out?

5. Watch a film under the stars at the Rooftop Cinema

people-watching-a-film-at-budapest-rooftop-cinema-at-sunset

Address: Mammut 2, Lövőház u. 2-6, 1024

What better way to feel like the main character than to watch a movie under the night sky?

Budapest’s Rooftop Cinema is a special experience and a great night out for all cinephiles.

They project a wide range of films from classic gems to highly commended recent releases.

And sometimes there’s even the option to see new films before they premiere!

Like any good cinema, there’s an option to buy snacks, or if you’re feeling cold you can rent one of their blankets.

There’s no need to worry about the open-air chill here!

6. Head out on a bike tour

road-along-bridge-lit-up-at-night

BudaBike Tours offers the opportunity to see Budapest lit up from a different perspective.

If you love hearing about the history of a city, along with insider facts and stories, this is a great way to get to know the area.

Starting from the Hungarian Parliament, the tour takes you around all of the city’s hotspots, along both sides of the Danube and across Liberty Bridge.

If you want to soak up the sparkling city scenes and explore more of the city in a shorter period of time, this is one of the best things to do in Budapest at night for you.

Prices vary depending on what company you go with.

But BudaBikes offer a 10km trip over 2.5 hours at the price of £22.

7. Spend an evening at a thermal spa

people-bathing-in-szechenyi-spa-and-baths-at-night

Address: Állatkerti krt. 9-11, 1146

If you’ve talked to anyone who’s visited Budapest, you’ve probably heard that visiting one of the city’s thermal baths is a must-do activity.

But did you know you can go at night too?

Every evening and in every season the three outdoor and fifteen indoor pools of Szechenyi Spa Baths are open until 10 pm for a night-time dip.

Szechenyi Spa & Baths is the most popular thermal bath in Budapest.

It’s especially famous for its summer night ‘sparties’ which take place almost every Saturday from 10:30 pm to 3 am.

With laser visual effects, blaring music and bars, this is certainly a unique option for a night out.

8. Attend a dinner cruise on the Danube with an Operetta and Folklore show

silverline-boat-cruise-going-down-the-danube-river-at-night

Address: Jane Haining Rakpart, Dokk 11, 1052

Sometimes on holiday we just want to treat ourselves, get dressed up and feel a little bit fancy.

Having dinner on the Danube and watching musicians and dancers in traditional Hungarian dress is definitely one way to achieve this.

Silverline Cruises is one company that offers this unique dining experience.

Once onboard, you can spend three hours having a candle-lit dinner, enjoying a four-course menu and watching a live folklore show.

This is a great way to glimpse some Hungarian culture, sit back and relax in style while eating fabulous food.

Ticket prices range depending on your age and what kind of package you want to go for.

This is one of the pricier things to do in Budapest at night.

However, it’s definitely worth looking into if you have a bit to spare in your budget and fancy a boujee dinner out.

9. See a show at the Hungarian State Opera House

budapest-opera-house-lit-up-at-night

Address: Andrássy út 22, 1061

If you’re a fan of ballet, opera or classical performances, the Hungarian State Opera House is a fantastic cultural institute in Hungary, where renowned Hungarian and international guest singers have performed.

The Hungarian National Ballet is the only classical ballet company in Hungary and frequently performs here, alongside the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, the country’s oldest orchestra, led by principal music director Balázs Kocsár.

The venue itself is spectacular inside and out.

Its neo-renaissance architecture, opulent ornamentation, and excellent acoustics make it one of the best opera houses in Europe.

The season typically lasts from September until the end of June.

It’s worth checking out their upcoming productions if you’re visiting outside the summer months.

10. Visit St Stephen’s Basilica

exterior-of-st-stephens-basilica-at-night

Address: Szent István tér 1, 1051

Situated in the heart of the city, you’ll definitely walk past St Stephen’s Basilica at some point in your explorations of Budapest.

This gorgeous 18th-century church is open in the day if you want to look at its stunning Neoclassical architecture or climb to the roof and see some (more) great views of the city.

The basilica is named after the first King of Hungary, Saint Stephen I, whose mummified hand is on display inside the Basilica for public viewing.

On Thursday evenings there are organ concerts inside the Basilica.

This is a more low-key option if you want to see some live music but don’t want to splash out on a big show.

11. Ride the Budapest Eye

budapest-eye-ferris-wheel-at-sunset

Address: Erzsébet tér 1051, 1051

Open every day from 10 am until midnight, the Budapest Eye is yet another central spot where you can get a great view of the city.

Rides last around ten minutes and loop around three times per go.

This is more of a generic tourist attraction but that doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the most fun things to do in Budapest at night.

Tickets don’t have to be purchased in advance and it costs around €8 for adults and €5 for children under 14.

12. Spend time in Gozsdu Udvar

people-shopping-and-dining-out-at-gozsdu-udvar

Address: Király u. 13, 1075

If you’re looking for somewhere that has restaurants, bars, arcades, nightclubs and culture concentrated in one place, then you should spend a night exploring Gozsdu Courtyard.

The space consists of seven different buildings and their courtyards, stretching along a 200-metre promenade which gives it a market feel.

The original buildings were part of the Jewish ghetto that existed in the later years of WWII before it became state-owned in 1952.

Left neglected for decades, reconstruction of the area started in the early 2000s and this transformed Gozsdu Courtyard into the vibrant hub you see today.

The neighbourhood is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is pretty cool.

There’s something for everyone here, whether you fancy a night singing your heart out at a karaoke bar (I’d recommend Blue Bird Karaoke Bar ) or a chilled evening with good food.

This is a place where locals and tourists mix, which is a testament to how lively and charming it is.

If you’re looking for a quirky night out filled with variety and a buzzing atmosphere, this is a great spot to go back to again and again.

13. Drink Hungarian wine

three-wine-barrels-in-dark-room

Address: Hilton Budapest, Hess András tér 1, 1014

To try the full array of delights Budapest has to offer, why not spend an evening sampling some Hungarian wine?

Hidden within the caves in Buda underneath the Hilton Hotel is Faust Wine Cellar, which offers different wine-tasting experiences.

They offer around eighty different Hungarian wines and thirty types of Pálinka, a traditional Hungarian fruit brandy.

Guided by experienced and personable sommeliers, you can choose to sample up to nine wines and get a brief education on the wines selected.

Bookings usually last around two hours and currently, the latest reservation time is 5:30 pm.

This means you’ll finish with plenty of time left in the evening to explore other parts of the city.

(Or go back to your accommodation and have a lie down if you’re feeling tired after all the wine!)

Faust Wine Cellar really is a hidden gem and is an experience worth the money for wine lovers of all levels.
