16 Tampa Hotels with Shuttles or Transportation to the Cruise Port

Need a Tampa hotel with transportation to the cruise port? That’s a smart way to start your vacation.

You likely know that Tampa is so much more than a cruise port. From amusement parks to casino gambling to aquariums, to beautiful beaches, there’s a wide variety of things to do in the area. It’s no wonder that many people choose to spend a day (or several) in the Tampa area before their cruise.

Of course, if you decide to stay at a Tampa hotel, then there is the question of actually getting to the port. The area has a number of options for getting around , including taxis and Uber/Lyft. However, these options can all cost you money. And depending on how far you are from the port, it can be a considerable amount to get to the cruise ship.

Terminal and parking at Port of Tampa

Instead, many people opt for cruise hotels that offer shuttles or other transportation (such as the free trolley) to the port , which is almost always cheaper and more convenient. That’s why we’ve rounded up a number of hotels in the area that offer these services.

While this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list, it should give you a good start on those hotels that can offer transport to your cruise ship. Prices will vary depending on when you stay. Click each link to read reviews of each hotel on Kayak.

Downtown/Ybor City Hotels Near Trolley Service to the Port

If you are staying in downtown or near the historic Ybor City area, then you can use Tampa’s TECO Streetcar service , which runs between Ybor City and downtown, and stops right by the cruise terminals. Fares are free , and routes run every 12-15 minutes seven days a week. You can view more about the service here .

All of the following hotels are near a streetcar stop, providing an easy ride to the port.

Aloft Tampa Downtown Modern, hip, trendy, stylish…  they all describe the Aloft Tampa Downtown. But one more word is convenient. It’s just a mile from the port, and only two blocks from the Whiting Street Station where the streetcar picks up. So you can hop on and be at the port within minutes. With good reviews, it’s a solid choice before your cruise.

  • Price: $$-$$$
  • Distance to Port: 1 mile
  • Review Rating: 4 out of 5

Hotel Tampa Riverwalk Located right on the Hillsborough River, the Sheraton is an upscale hotel with nice views of both downtown and the river. While it’s close to the port (about a mile), it’s a little far to walk with luggage. Instead, the trolley stop is just a five-minute walk from the hotel, which makes catching a ride a no-brainer.

  • Review Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Hilton Tampa Downtown Just a block from the streetcar station, you can stay here to enjoy your time in Tampa in a nice hotel downtown and get to the cruise port easily. The reviews are great, and not just because the Hilton offers a cool rooftop pool. The TECO Streetcar can get you to the port or other spots such as Ybor City or the Florida Aquarium without the need for an Uber or a taxi.

Embassy Suites Tampa Downtown Embassy Suites is known as a higher-end hotel, and this version doesn’t disappoint. It’s well-reviewed, and the location is hard to beat. It sits right next to the convention center and a 2-minute walk from the Amalie Arena (where the Tampa Bay Lightning play). A TECO stop is right next to the hotel to take you to the cruise port that’s only three stops away.

  • Distance to Port: 0.5 miles

Tampa Marriott Water Street One of the closest hotels to the cruise port is obviously one of the most convenient for cruise passengers. It’s only a 10-15 minute walk to the port, but only a few minutes if you take the free streetcar that has a stop right outside the hotel (HSBC Station #9). Best of all, the hotel is rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google

  • Review Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Hampton Inn & Suites Ybor City Hampton Inn often ranks as one of the most popular hotels, combining a nice mix of comfort and affordability. Add to that list the fact that this particular hotel is right near Ybor City — the neat historic district of Tampa with lots of restaurants and shops that’s a hotspot at night. Also, this hotel is right near the streetcar stop (Cadrecha Plaza Station #4), so you can get to the port in just a few minutes.

Hilton Garden Inn Ybor City Right in the heart of Ybor City, it’s hard to go wrong with the Hilton Garden Inn. You can stay in a prime location (just a block off of the main street in Ybor), plus when it’s time to head to the port there is the streetcar stop just a short walk away (Centro Ybor Station #2). The ride should only take a few minutes and is free.

Hotel Haya Want a stay that’s a bit different than the chain options that are available anywhere? Situated in Ybor City, this boutique hotel is a cool mix of historic and modern. The courtyard pool is also dreamy. That makes it a great option if you want to start your vacation in Tampa the day before instead of waiting until you are on the cruise ship. It’s also right next to a streetcar stop (Streetcar Society Station #3) that will take you directly to the cruise terminals.

Hampton Inn Downtown Channel District The closest spot to stay to the cruise terminals? It’s this hotel (which is a joint building between Hampton Inn and Home2 Suites). From here you’re a five-minute walk to Terminal 6 or 12 minutes to Terminal 2. Don’t want to walk? It’s even shorter to the TECO Streetcar stop (York Street Station #6), which will take you to the terminal.

Home2 Suites Downtown Channel District As mentioned above, this hotel shares the same building with the Hampton Inn. But if you need more space, the suites available are ideal, and the hotel is highly rated. From here you are just a few minutes’ walk to the cruise ship at Terminal 6. As well, there is a trolley stop right nearby so you can get a ride to your ship if sailing one of the other terminals farther down.

Tampa cruise port guide: Sail away from Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay_Facebook_5

Nestled on Florida's west coast, Tampa's cruise port is situated on the bay, rather than directly on the Gulf of Mexico. Port Tampa Bay serves five cruise lines and offers a variety of sailings to destinations like the Caribbean , the Bahamas , Mexico and Central America.

Tampa is a fantastic place to begin or end your cruise. It offers easy access to international airports, premier hotels from major brands and boutique options, and restaurants to suit any culinary desire. Add a few days to your vacation to explore what the city and its surrounding areas have to offer, including pristine Gulf Coast beaches, Central Florida's nearby theme parks and incredible museums for adults and children.

Port Tampa Bay cruise port overview

tampa fl cruise port hotels

The three cruise terminals at the port of Tampa are terminals 2, 3 and 6.

Port Tampa Bay cruise terminal address information

  • Terminal 2: 651 Channelside Dr.
  • Terminal 3: 815 Channelside Dr.
  • Terminal 6: 1331 McKay St.

The best place to view a map of the three cruise line terminals is on the Port Tampa Bay website. Click one of the three terminals, and you'll be taken to a Departure Guide that includes a map.

The port offers restrooms, vending machines and luggage storage through a third party. Several restaurants and bars are a few minutes' walk from the terminals.

All cruise terminals are ADA-accessible, with elevators and ramps. Availability permitting, cruise staff can help transport passengers in wheelchairs to and from the vessel.

Cruise lines sailing from the Tampa cruise port

Five cruise lines sail from Port Tampa Bay and utilize the three cruise terminals:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Margaritaville at Sea
  • Oceania Cruises (beginning 2026 )

Tampa's port does not have set terminals reserved for specific cruise lines, as you might find in other Florida ports. The calendar feature on Port Tampa Bay's website can help you find which terminal is assigned to your ship on departure day. Click on your ship's name on the calendar square for the day you embark, and you'll see its terminal at the top of the pop-up box that appears. You'll also see an option to purchase on-site parking for your cruise in the same box.

Airports near the Tampa cruise port

tampa fl cruise port hotels

If arriving by air for your cruise, you can choose to fly into several airports close to the Tampa Bay cruise port.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is the closest option, approximately 7 miles and a 15-minute drive to Port Tampa Bay. Major airlines that fly here include Air Canada, Alaska, American, British Airways, JetBlue, Southwest, United and Virgin Atlantic.

If you're looking for lounge access, TPA has a Delta Sky Club at Concourse E.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is farther away but might have more affordable and desirable flight schedules for your needs. This popular Central Florida destination is approximately 85 miles from Tampa's cruise port. Though it can be just an hour-and-fifteen-minute drive without traffic, plan for considerable congestion on the highways between these two major cities. With traffic, reaching Port Tampa Bay from MCO airport can take up to two hours.

Over 40 airlines travel to MCO, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Alaska, American Airlines, British Airways, Delta, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Southwest, United and Virgin Atlantic.

At MCO, check out The Club lounge if you're heading to terminals A or B, where prebooking is available for a fee though often unnecessary. Alternatively, visit the Plaza Premium Lounge at Terminal C. Use your credit card perks for lounge access before your flight.

If you're spending time elsewhere in Florida before or after your cruise, you might want to consider Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), a smaller international airport. It's 60 miles, or an hour's drive, south of the port. Air Canada, Allegiant, American Airlines, Avelo, Breeze, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country and United fly from here.

Regardless of which airport you choose, you can minimize your travel costs by checking credit card perks. Flight companion passes are available if you're traveling as a couple with the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card . It offers a $99 Companion Fare (plus taxes and fees from $23) each account anniversary after spending $6,000 or more within the prior anniversary year.

If you plan your personal and business credit card spending wisely with a Southwest card , you can earn nearly two years of buy-one-get-one flights, minus taxes and fees.

How to get to Port Tampa Bay

tampa fl cruise port hotels

You can get to the cruise port via independent companies, public transportation and hotel shuttles.

Ride-shares, cruise transfers and private shuttles are your best travel options from TPA to the cruise port. Though you can utilize public transportation with a combination of SkyConnect from the airport to a public bus, the travel time takes more than an hour with transfers and bus stops. On the other hand, a vehicle that takes you directly from the airport to the port only takes between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Cruise line transfers

All of the cruise lines that sail from Port Tampa Bay, except Margaritaville at Sea, offer transfers from the TPA airport to the cruise port for an additional fee, starting at $24.99 per person each way. None of the cruise lines offer transfers from MCO to the Tampa cruise port.

Hotel shuttles

A deciding factor for where you stay before or after your cruise might be the convenience of a shuttle between the hotel and the cruise terminal. Inquire before booking if the hotel you're considering offers a shuttle service and if so, whether it's complimentary or not.

Hilton's Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown Tampa offers a free shuttle within three miles, including the cruise port, less than two miles away. While Tampa Marriott Water Street does not offer a shuttle, Tampa's free TECO Streetcar has a stop right in front of the hotel and at the cruise terminal.

Independent airport shuttles, van and car services

If you want to set up a private transfer, preplan and book a van, limo or sedan depending on the number of people in your party and your comfort preference.

Mears is a popular and reputable company in Central Florida that services Orlando and Tampa. The company's sizable fleet includes hundreds of luxury sedans, vans and limos. Use Mears' online quote system to budget for your transfer costs. A standard sedan that fits up to three people and four bags costs $150, while a van that can accommodate eight people and 10 bags will cost a little over $300. Car seats do not cost extra; if you need one, add it to the "Special Instructions" area of the online reservation system.

Other services, like Blue One Transportation , offer a private vehicle for up to four people for $90. A shared shuttle is also an option for $15 per person. There is no additional charge for children's car seats.

Taxis and ride-shares

If you are heading to the port directly from Tampa airport, Yellow Cab taxis will take you there from the baggage claim pickup areas for a flat rate of $35 . Taxis wait at the terminal for disembarking guests.

Metered rates within the city are $3.50 for the first 1/5 of a mile or part thereof. Additional miles cost $2.50. The minimum fee from the airport is $20.

Ride-shares pick up and drop off at each terminal in designated areas; the estimated ride cost between Tampa International Airport and Port Tampa Bay for Uber or Lyft starts at $20. It's an estimated $120 between Orlando International Airport and the port.

Because ride-shares show you the estimated ride cost before you book and taxis have variable fares depending on the driver's route, we favor ride-shares over taxis.

Public transportation from downtown Tampa/hotel district

The TECO Streetcar is a free service operated by the City of Tampa and runs throughout downtown Tampa and the Ybor City neighborhood. It drops you off within a short walk to all three cruise terminals at Station 7 , located at the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and Channelside Drive. Be mindful of the northbound or southbound direction you want to travel, whether you're coming to the port or leaving it to reach your local destination.

TECO Streetcar hours vary, so check the day's schedule, especially on weekends when cars start running later.

Tampa cruise port parking

tampa fl cruise port hotels

On-site port parking

Official parking at the port is within walking distance of the cruise terminals at the Channelside Parking Garage . You can buy tickets for parking in advance of your cruise on the Port Tampa Bay website. Find your cruise to purchase your parking pass for your sailing, which is 100% refundable prior to a cruise.

Prepaid parking rates are $15.75 per day; the total cost will vary based on the length of your cruise. After prepaying, print your parking voucher, which you'll present to the cashier upon arrival. Alternatively, you can drive up to the port without a reservation; rates remain the same whether you prepay or not.

Parking is only available when the ship is docked, and all major credit cards and cash are accepted. If you want curbside drop-off at the cruise terminal entrance, opt for valet parking for the same daily rate plus an additional $20 fee. Limited oversized vehicle parking at the on-site garage — for vehicles exceeding 8 feet, 2 inches, or that require more than one parking space — is available for $30 per day.

Private lots

Some hotels like Hilton's Hotel Tampa Riverwalk have park-and-stay rates for cruisers. If your hotel doesn't have this option or if you're driving straight to the cruise port, consider a private lot to save some money.

While Port Tampa Bay's on-site Channelside Parking Garage is the closest lot to the terminals, other options aren't much farther from the ships. The 241 Parking garage is well-lit, gated and less than one mile north of the Channelside Parking Garage. At $8.99 per day, it's also more affordable than parking at the port. The lot does fill up, so you'll want to reserve in advance, though you can drive up and park without a reservation if spaces are available.

241 Parking recommends making reservations 30 days in advance during peak cruise season from November through April, and a minimum of 15 days in advance during off-peak cruise season from May to October. The lot provides a free shuttle to and from the port and accepts all major credit cards and cash.

Hotels near Tampa cruise port

tampa fl cruise port hotels

Hotel options near the cruise port are plentiful across all brands and price points. Check for current promotions; some hotels offer double points during select times or park-and-stay options so you can leave your car at the hotel while you cruise.

Regardless of where you book a hotel, if you drive to the area, you must factor parking costs into your vacation budget. All parking options in downtown Tampa — including street parking, garages and hotels — have fees.

Hilton hotels

Hampton Inn & Suites Tampa/Ybor City/Downtown (starting at 43,000 points) is an affordable hotel near the cruise port with free hot breakfast. It also offers a complimentary shuttle from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. within a three-mile radius, excluding the airport but including the cruise port.

Hotel Tampa Riverwalk (starting at 42,000 points) is steps from Tampa's Riverwalk on the Hillsborough River and offers park-and-stay rates. The complimentary Tampa TECO Streetcar has a station one block away and stops at the cruise port. If you don't want to eat at the hotel's on-site restaurant, many restaurants are a short walk away.

The Tampa Edition (starting at 65,500 points) is a luxury hotel in the trendy Water Street district. With eight on-site restaurants and bars, a stunning outdoor pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a spa and a prime location by Port Tampa Bay, you won't want to leave until your cruise begins. While the hotel doesn't provide a shuttle, the cruise port is less than half a mile away.

Restaurants near Port Tampa Bay

tampa fl cruise port hotels

The dining options near the port of Tampa range from Michelin-starred restaurants to casual eateries. If your schedule allows, set aside time to enjoy a meal on land and try local favorites from Cuban cuisine to fresh seafood.

Sparkman Wharf is on the waterfront next to the cruise port. See how this family-friendly destination has turned shipping containers into multiple restaurants and bars with outdoor seating areas. Sparkman Wharf also has retail shops and the Splitsville bowling alley for activities before or after your meal.

Armature Works is a fantastic food hall to visit – especially when it's hot or rainy and alfresco dining is not in the cards. Most of the seating is inside an air-conditioned building where you can order meals and treats from 18 vendors; outdoor dining space is limited.

Water Street Tampa is another dining destination within walking distance from the Tampa cruise port. Enjoy the avenue's wide walkways and lush greenery on your way to top-rated restaurants and bars.

Oxford Exchange is a late-19th-century building housing a mix of retail and dining. Its design and decor draw inspiration from London's historic clubs, libraries and shops. A sense of community can be felt throughout the space as people gather at the tea shop or enjoy the bookstore's book signings and lectures.

Columbia Restaurant is perhaps the city's most famous restaurant, with several locations across Florida; three are located in Tampa. It is well known for its Latin-inspired menu. Try the legendary 1905 salad or a Cuban sandwich. If you're choosing among the three locations, know that the original venue is in Ybor City, less than two miles from the port. Alternatively, the Columbia Restaurant Cafe is accessible from outside the Tampa Bay History Center, less than a mile from the cruise port, and the third location is airside at Tampa International Airport in Concourse E.

Things to do in Tampa before or after your cruise

tampa fl cruise port hotels

Tampa is known for its Gulf Coast beaches, culinary scene, multiple attractions and sunshine. Stay local to enjoy what the city offers or visit nearby areas to experience Central Florida's attractions.

Nearby beaches

Beachgoers love the jewel-toned water of Florida's Gulf Coast. Ben T. Davis Beach is the closest and most popular sandy oasis, just over 10 miles west of the cruise port. Metered parking is nearby; arrive early to beat the crowds and find a spot.

Cypress Point Park is a public neighborhood park with access to the water, a small sandy shoreline, a playground, a sand volleyball court, trails and a disc golf course. It's less than 8 miles west of the cruise port.

The Tampa Riverwalk

Beginning just one mile from the port is The Tampa Riverwalk. This 2.6-mile walking path runs along the Hillsborough River. Purchase a one-day or three-day Tampa Riverwalk Attraction Pass for access to the following seven family-friendly attractions:

  • The Florida Aquarium
  • Tampa Bay History Center
  • Glazer Children's Museum
  • Tampa Museum of Art
  • Pirate Water Taxi
  • Florida Museum of Photographic Arts
  • Henry B. Plant Museum

Live sporting events

Cruises depart from Tampa year-round, so if you cruise from September through April, there's likely a live sporting event taking place. Attend a Tampa Bay Lightning game at Amalie Arena during the NHL season from October through April (and further into summer if the team makes the playoffs). Steinbrenner Field is the place to be during spring training for the New York Yankees during February and March. If you want to see the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in action during football season, head to Raymond James Stadium from September to January.

Theme parks

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, just 10 miles north of the cruise port, is filled with thrills for all ages, from children's rides to roller coasters for teens and adults. Thousands of people buy special event tickets for the popular Howl-O-Scream event, which takes place from early September to early November.

Alternatively, take advantage of Tampa's proximity to Orlando's theme parks and plan a pre- or postcruise visit to Walt Disney World, Sea World or Universal Parks & Resorts. You'll need an extended stay because the theme parks are more than 70 miles from Port Tampa Bay, and it can take two hours or longer to get there with traffic. You might consider flying into MCO instead of TPA if you're planning a theme park visit before or after your sailing.

St. Pete and Clearwater

Two towns just west of Tampa are incredibly popular among Florida visitors: St. Petersburg – better known as St. Pete – and Clearwater . The two cities are situated on the same peninsula on Tampa Bay and have ample beach access. Some visitors favor St. Pete's downtown vibe with its waterfront shops, restaurants and public park. It's also home to such museums as the Dali Museum and the Chihuly Collection. Other vacationers like Clearwater for its beach, nightlife and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Thanks to the annual SHINE Festival, which draws renowned street artists from around the world, St. Pete is also known for its dozens of colorful murals. If you like public art, the St. Pete mural tour takes place at 10 a.m. every Sunday. A local guide brings visitors to 30 murals in a four-block radius. The proceeds from the tour fees are reinvested in the city's murals.

Shopping near the Tampa cruise port

The Publix GreenWise Market at Water Street Tampa is a 5-minute walk from the cruise port and is perfect for last-minute essentials, drinks and snacks. Walgreens pharmacy and convenience store is one mile west of the port on W. Platt Street.

If you're interested in shopping for souvenirs near the cruise port to bring home from your time in Tampa, check out the retail shops at Sparkman Wharf, next to the cruise port. For another fabulous shopping area, visit Hyde Park Village. The Unlock Tampa Bay Visitor Center and Gift Shop is ideal for Tampa-branded souvenirs on North Franklin Street, less than one mile northwest of the cruise port.

Flights Canceled, Airports Close, Cruises Divert as Hurricane Milton Approaches Florida

Orlando, Tampa, and Southwest Florida airports have all closed.

As Hurricane Milton hurdles its way towards Florida on Wednesday as a Category 4 storm, flights have been canceled, airlines and cruises have diverted, and theme parks have shuttered.

Milton, which is currently moving across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, was expected to make landfall as an “extremely dangerous major hurricane” late Wednesday or early Thursday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center . The storm featured maximum sustained winds near 155 mph with hurricane-force winds extending up to 30 miles from the center, and threatened a “dangerous storm surge.”

As a result, more than 1,700 flights had already been canceled within, into, or out of the United States early Wednesday morning, according to flight tracker FlightAware . Several major airports in Florida planned to close ahead of the hurricane, including Orlando International Airport (MCO), which announced it would cease operations at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and open “once a damage assessment has been conducted of all airport facilities and immediate safety issues addressed.” More than 800 flights were canceled in and out of the airport on Wednesday.

Similarly, Tampa International Airport (TPA) suspended all commercial and cargo operations on Tuesday, canceling more than 380 incoming and outgoing flights on Wednesday. This was the second time in as many weeks Tampa’s airport had to close following Hurricane Helene, which made landfall as a devastating Category 4 storm in Florida late last month.

Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) also suspended operations on Wednesday and said it planned to remain closed on Thursday.

Several airlines issued flight waivers ahead of Milton, including Delta Air Lines ,  United Airlines , American Airlines , and more. For its part, United also told Travel + Leisure it added 18 extra flights to Florida and employed larger aircraft on Monday and Tuesday as well as capped Florida fares. However, United said its flights out of Tampa, Orlando, Fort Myers, and Sarasota were all full for Wednesday and Thursday.

“We will continue to adjust our schedule to account for the hurricane and airport closures,” the airline said in a statement shared with T+L.

Cruises out of Florida were also affected with several cruise ports forced to cease vessel traffic, including the Port of Tampa Bay , the Port of Jacksonville , and Port Canaveral . As a result, cruise lines were forced to divert or cancel sailings, including Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , and Margaritaville at Sea .

And when it came to hotels and home rentals, Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo told T+L the companies issued travel waivers for travelers “with reservations impacted by Hurricane Milton.”

On the ground in Florida, major theme parks closed their gates, like Walt Disney World, which planned to close Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and close the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney Springs an hour later.

“It is likely the theme parks will remain closed on Thursday, October 10,” Disney wrote in its advisory, adding, “Please know these adjustments have been made in order to leave plenty of time for our Guests and Cast Members to return to their Resort hotels or homes safely hours before higher winds are expected to reach Central Florida.”

Universal Orlando Resort also planned to close Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Universal CityWalk after 2 p.m. on Wednesday and remain closed on Thursday.

Follow the latest updates as Hurricane Milton plows toward Florida.

As Hurricane Milton surges toward the west coast of Florida, travel disruptions are spreading across the state, with airports and amusement parks announcing closures, airlines adding and canceling flights, and cruise companies altering ship routes.

Visit Florida, the state’s official tourism organization, warned that Hurricane Milton is expected to grow and remain “extremely dangerous” as it approaches land. The storm is forecast to make landfall in the Tampa Bay region on Wednesday.

In a travel advisory issued on Tuesday, the organization warned of damaging winds and a life-threatening storm surge. “This is an extremely life-threatening situation,” said Visit Florida, advising that those in the surge warning areas “should follow advice given by local officials and evacuate immediately if told to do so.”

Florida is one of the world’s most popular vacation hot spots. According to Visit Florida, the state received a record 140.6 million visitors in 2023, an increase of 2.3 percent from 2022.

Here’s how travel is being disrupted by the hurricane.

Closed airports, canceled flights

Multiple airports in Florida have closed or will do so ahead of Hurricane Milton’s anticipated landfall. Tampa International Airport and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport closed on Tuesday, as did St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport , which will remain closed through Thursday. Others announced plans to close Wednesday: Orlando International Airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport will close at 8 a.m.; Daytona Beach International Airport will close at 10 a.m.; Melbourne Orlando International Airport will close at 2 p.m. and reopen at 9 a.m. on Friday; Palm Beach International Airport will close at 9 p.m.; and Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers will close through Thursday.

Other airports announced that they were monitoring the storm, and advised travelers to brace for flight disruptions and to contact their airlines for the latest information.

Several hundred flights departing from or arriving to Florida airports have been canceled on Tuesday. For those who wish to evacuate, American Airlines will operate 11 additional flights from Orlando International Airport on Tuesday evening to destinations including Charlotte, N.C., and Dallas.

These flights can be booked by contacting the airline by phone . Passengers can check two bags for free. These last-minute flights come after American offered additional flights from the Tampa and Sarasota Bradenton airports on Monday and Tuesday morning.

Many airlines, including American , Delta Air Lines , United Airlines , Southwest Airlines , JetBlue Airways , Spirit Airlines , and Frontier Airlines , have issued waivers that allow passengers with travel to or from a number of airports in Florida to rebook their plans without incurring any change fees.

Temporary closures at amusement parks

Many theme parks and resorts in Central Florida — including Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort — are continuing to monitor the projected path of the hurricane on Tuesday and are basing operating decisions on storm updates.

Walt Disney World Resort announced that it would continue to operate under normal conditions through Tuesday, but the theme parks and some of its other properties will close in phases on Wednesday. Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom will close at 1 p.m. Wednesday, followed by Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Disney Springs all closing at 2 p.m. It is likely the parks will remain closed through Thursday, according to the company’s website.

Disney previously announced temporary closures, from 11 a.m. on Wednesday, for Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Treehouse Villas at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, which plan to remain closed until Sunday. Copper Creek Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge will also close on Wednesday, and plans to reopen Friday.

On Wednesday, Osceola County, which includes parts of Walt Disney World, issued a curfew that will begin at 8 p.m. and last until 10 a.m. Thursday. Guests staying at Disney properties within Osceola County are included in the curfew and will need to remain in their rooms.

Disney’s cancellation policy notes that if a traveler had plans to travel to one of its locations and a hurricane warning was issued for the area by the National Hurricane Center, that guest may be able to reschedule or cancel without any cancellation or change fees imposed.

On Tuesday, Universal Orlando announced that Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Universal CityWalk will remain open until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, weather permitting, and then will be closed through Thursday. The park encouraged guests to continue monitoring its website for updates . The hotels, the announcement noted, will remain operational.

Other parks like SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica Orlando will remain open on Tuesday, but noted they will close on Wednesday and Thursday. Busch Gardens Tampa will be closed through Thursday, according to the website of United Parks and Resorts , the company that operates the parks. Park-goers are encouraged to check the company’s website for updates. LEGOLAND Florida theme park in Winter Haven will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, according to an update on its website .

And ZooTampa has announced closures from Tuesday through Thursday, according to its website .

Diverted cruise routes

Major cruise lines operating out of Florida’s west coast have altered their itineraries to avoid the direct path of Hurricane Milton and ensure that they can sail a safe distance from the storm.

Carnival Cruise Line canceled port stops at Cozumel in Mexico, scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday for several ships, and said it was closely monitoring other itineraries that could be adjusted further.

“Guests on upcoming cruises departing from home ports that could be affected by the storm’s path are encouraged to opt-in to text alerts when checking in and to monitor emails,” the cruise line said in a statement.

Royal Caribbean has also adjusted several itineraries, including for its Grandeur of the Seas ship, which sailed out of Tampa on Monday and will call at Nassau in the Bahamas, instead of Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

MSC Cruise Lines’s Seashore ship, currently in the Bahamas, may face delays returning to its home port of Port Canaveral on Thursday, the cruise line said in a statement. While Port Canaveral is currently open, the United States Coast Guard designated it “condition Yankee” on Tuesday, meaning sustained gale-force winds are predicted within 24 hours.

Waived cancellation fees at hotels and resorts

Some hotels and resorts on the state’s west coast have announced closures as well.

The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort , in Longboat Key and owned by Marriott, announced that it is currently closed and would waive cancellation fees for guests through Oct. 14. In the city of St. Pete Beach, the Don CeSar hotel, the Sirata Beach Resort and the TradeWinds Resort have announced temporary closures and asked guests to contact the properties.

An evacuation order issued in the town of Fort Myers on Monday caused many hotels, including the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina , Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers Beach and DiamondHead Beach Resort , to pause their operations, according to their websites.

And travelers who may have booked stays in affected areas with short-term rental companies, like Airbnb or Vrbo , should check to see if those travel operators offer emergency policies that allow for refunds or cancellations related to extreme weather events. Airbnb offers a “ major disruptive events policy ,” while Vrbo has an “ extenuating circumstances ” policy.

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article misidentified the airport that American Airlines will fly additional planes out of Tuesday night. It is the Orlando International Airport, not the Melbourne Orlando International Airport.

More on Hurricane Milton

Why Milton Is Causing Tornadoes:  Tornadoes can start in the outer edges of hurricanes. Once a storm is over land, the increase in surface friction can make them touch down .

Florida on High Alert:  Hurricane Milton threatened nearly the entire state  as it blew in from the Gulf of Mexico, yet another case of a menacing storm putting many of Florida’s 23 million residents in danger.

Some Inmates Will Not Evacuate:  Manatee County, just south of Tampa, has ordered residents in three evacuation zones to get out. But the inmates and staff of the county jail will stay put .

Can Electric Vehicles Catch Fire in Hurricanes?:  E.V. batteries that are submerged in saltwater can catch fire after the floods subside, but experts say it’s a rarity .

FEMA’s Severe Staffing Shortage:   Fewer than 10% of the agency’s disaster workers  are available to respond to Hurricane Milton and other calamities.

Some Floridians struggle to evacuate as Milton bears down

As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area.

Ashley Khrais, a resident of Holiday, Florida, just inland from the coast, about an hour northwest of Tampa, is among those finding themselves stuck.

Khrais, a registered nurse, said that despite the severity of the coming storm, she’s eager to help other residents even worse off.

From what she's seen and heard, there are likely to be many.

“It seems very, very scary, but there’s no way to leave,” Khrais said around midday Tuesday.

Faced with daunting traffic and seemingly no gas, she said she realized she was going to have to “hunker down” and try to ride out the storm with her 10-month-old son and mother.

National Hurricane Center forecasters say that Milton “has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida.”

Much of that area, including northwest Florida, is still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene less than two weeks ago. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles . FEMA is assisting in the removal of debris, according to a statement from the White House on Monday.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor warned that Milton would be unlike other storms. “I can say this without any dramatization whatsoever: If you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you are going to die,” Castor said Monday in an interview with CNN .

However, numerous Tampa-area residents have made posts and videos sharing how difficult evacuating can be. Locals lamented a shortage of gas, gridlocked roads, few hotels to shelter in and no flights out of the area. Some said their cars were too damaged from Helene to get them out of the affected areas.

By Tuesday, airlines had canceled hundreds of flights , theme parks prepared to close some areas and cruise lines shifted routes as Floridians braced for Hurricane Milton’s landfall.

The cyclone has top sustained winds near 155 miles per hour, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and is expected to strike Florida’s west coast late Wednesday. More than 50 Florida counties are under a state of emergency.

A spokesperson for the Florida Division of Emergency Management said Tuesday that more than 1 million gallons of gasoline would arrive today, "with another 6 million gallons on the way into the state in the coming days."

It has shared a list of shelters residents could go to as well as Uber vouchers to help them get there.

On social media, lines stretching around the block could be seen at the few gas stations in the greater Tampa Bay area that still had fuel. According to data from gas station tracking company GasBuddy, approximately 16% of fueling stations in Florida were out of gas before noon Tuesday, with about 43% out in the Tampa Bay area.

Unlike many other states in the southeast, Florida gets its gasoline supplies by boat. That has caused problems in the past: When Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades terminal flooded in the spring of 2023, drivers across Southeast Florida were stranded for days.

Gov. Ron DeSantis acknowledged delivery issues in comments Tuesday, though did not directly address whether sea-borne shipping issues were playing a role. In an appearance on “Fox and Friends,” he said “distribution problems” were hampering the delivery of fuel supplies the state had ordered.

“The stations are running through it faster than they normally do,” DeSantis said. “We have Florida Highway Patrol escorting these fuel trucks into the gas stations.”

He said that 1.2 million gallons of both diesel and gasoline were currently en route to the state, adding Florida Highway Patrol had escorted 27 fuel trucks on Monday night to replenish the supply.

Tampa resident Lindsey Carlson considers herself lucky. Thanks to a gas-tracking app, she said she and her family were able to fill up at a gas station in Plant City, about a half hour east of Tampa.

Carlson said she’s now successfully evacuated to Lakeland, in the inland part of the state, about an hour east of Tampa, while her parents made it to the Jacksonville area. Hurricane Helene had already damaged her family home and she assumes more, if not total damage, will be wrought by Milton.

“What’s really sad is seeing people pulling up to gas stations and just staring at pumps that are out of gas,” she said. “People don’t know what to do.”
