Trailing Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal in Vienna

Trailing Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal in Vienna

Update July 2023 : Not a lot of graffiti on the building wall’s anymore.

José P. Rizal, the Philippine national hero, traveled with his friend Maximo Viola to Vienna on May 20-24, 1887. They arrived from Brunn, which I assume is today’s Brno, the former capital city of Moravia and the political and cultural hub of the South Moravian Region at the time. In Vienna, Rizal and Viola visited various places of cultural and historical significance. During their five-day stay in Vienna, Rizal and Viola visited museums, statues, libraries and other historic buildings, such as the Parliament, the Hofburg (Imperial Palace), State Opera House (Staatsoper), Palace Theater (Burgtheater), University, City Hall, Schönbrunn Palace , St. Stephen’s Cathedral, churches and other sites of cultural significance, especially those located on the wide street called the Ring.

Of special importance to Dr. Rizal was his visit to the Museum of Natural History ( Naturhistorisches Museum), because he was trying to look for objects or specimens from the Philippines which might be on exhibit in the museum. Rizal, being a polymath and a keen observer, likely took advantage of his time in Vienna to immerse himself in the city’s intellectual and artistic atmosphere, further enriching his knowledge and experiences.

They stayed at Metropole Hotel, which was located at Morzinplatz. The original structure has been destroyed during the war, and nowadays there stands a residential building, the Leopold Hof, at Franz-Josefs Kai 31 at the corner of Morzinplatz – a walkable distance from the building that housed the Philippine Embassy before it moved to its present location at Ares Tower.

Commemorative plaque

A commemorative plaque for Rizal has been installed in the said building on June 19, 1995 by H.E. Reynaldo Arcilla, Philippine Ambassador to Austria, on the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. José P. Rizal. So whenever we have Filipino visitors in Vienna, I would bring them to see it.

I had some years ago collaborated with a writer in Manila to trail Rizal in Vienna and while I don’t clearly remember what came of it, here’s a short gist of that article, which are compiled mostly from the publications about Rizal and excerpts from his and his friends’ letters. The photos here are the ones I took of friends and some of theirs.

The plaque reads:

“DR. JOSE P. RIZAL, PHILIPPINISCHER NATIONAL HELD, WOHNTE VOM 20. BIS 24. MAI 1887 IM HOTEL METROPOLE DAS SICH AN DIESER STELLE BEFAND. EIN ÖSTERREICHISCHER LEHRER, PROFESSOR FERDINAND BLUMENTRITT UNTERSTÜTZTE RIZALS AKTION IN EUROPA GEGEN DIE SPANISCHE KOLONIALHERRSCHAFT.”

Translation:

“DR. JOSE P. RIZAL, FILIPINO NATIONAL HERO, RESIDED FROM THE MAY 20 to 24, 1887 IN THE HOTEL METROPOLE WHICH WAS IN THIS PLACE. AN AUSTRIAN TEACHER, PROFESSOR FERDINAND BLUMENTRITT SUPPORTED RIZAL’S ACTION IN EUROPE AGAINST SPANISH COLONIAL RULE.”

Maximo Viola was a Filipino doctor, writer, and patriot who played a significant role in the life of José Rizal. Viola was a close friend and supporter, and he helped finance the publication of Rizal’s novel, “ Noli Me Tangere ” (Touch Me Not), which is considered as one of the most important works of Philippine literature. Because of the limitations in the Philippines at the time that prevented his brother, Paciano, from sending money to Jose Rizal in Europe, Viola lend Rizal the money he needed. He also accompanied Rizal around Europe and was there with him when “ Noli Me Tangere ” was printed in Berlin. He also supported Rizal’s efforts to promote reforms in the Philippines.

Jose Rizal and Maximo Villa met one of the best novelists of that time, Norfenfals (to which I couldn’t find other references to). They also got to know two of Blumentritt’s close friends, the Austrian professors Masner and Nordman.

Blumentritt

Jose Rizal’s friendship with Austrian scholar Ferdinand Blumentritt was deep and intellectual. Ferdinand Blumentritt, an Austrian scholar and ethnologist, became one of Rizal’s closest friends and correspondents during Rizal’s travels in Europe. Their friendship was based on mutual respect, shared intellectual interests, and a commitment to social justice and reform.

Blumentritt greatly admired Rizal’s intellect, writings, and dedication to the cause of Filipino nationalism and social reform. He provided valuable support to Rizal, offering encouragement, advice, and scholarly insights. Blumentritt’s expertise in history, ethnology, and languages contributed to Rizal’s understanding of European culture and colonialism, which in turn influenced Rizal’s own advocacy for Philippine independence.

Their friendship was sustained through frequent correspondence, with Rizal often seeking Blumentritt’s advice on various matters, including historical research and political strategies. Blumentritt, in turn, actively promoted Rizal’s writings and ideas in Europe, helping to garner support for the Philippine nationalist cause among European intellectuals.

They first met on May 13, 1887 at the Leitmeritz (a town in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic) railroad station. At the station, Professor Blumentritt was holding a pencil drawing of Rizal that he had sent to help identify him.

Despite the distance between them, Rizal and Blumentritt remained close friends until Rizal’s death in 1896. He advised Rizal not to publish the second book, El Filibusterismo , in fear of his friend’s life. Prior to his death in Manila, Rizal penned his farewell letter to Blumentritt. It was said that Blumentritt sobbed after reading the letter.

Blumentritt continued to honor Rizal’s memory and legacy, preserving their correspondence and advocating for the recognition of Rizal’s contributions to Philippine history and culture. Their friendship serves as a testament to the power of intellectual exchange, solidarity, and shared ideals in the pursuit of social justice and national liberation. During his lifetime, Ferdinand Blumentritt was one of the best experts on the Philippines, even though he never set foot there. The Philippines honored him with parks, a street, and a light rail station in Manila that are named after him.

On May 24, Rizal and Viola left Vienna on a river boat to see beautiful sights of the Danube River.

Yes, we have Dr. Maximo Viola to thank for helping publish Noli (I’m speaking for those who has loved to dissect the parallels of history and real-life situation and the symbolism of the lives Filipinos lived at the time written in the book).

Which of the two books do you prefer? For me, the way the characters were developed were very different, so I enjoyed reading Noli more, but loved Fili better. ^_^

Rizal had written two letters to Blumentritt, one dated May 20, 1887 and the other dated May 24, 1887, with address from the Hotel Metropole.

Dr. Viola noted in his travel journal that Rizal had encountered an extremely lovely Viennese girl who quickly won Rizal over. His words read, ‘’I n one of our tours of that city, he (Rizal) encountered the figure of a temptress in the form of a Viennese woman, of the family of the Camellias or Margarite, of extraordinary beauty and irresistible attraction, who seemingly had been expressly invited to offer for a moment the cup of mundane pleasure to the apostle of Philippine freedom who until then had enjoyed among his intimates the fame worthy of his glorious namesake St. Joseph.’’

This is very interesting to know! Who initiated the installation of the plaque? I enjoyed both of the books, and they really gave us a good look at the lives of our fellowmen back in those days…

The Philippine embassy in Vienna, sorry forgot to add that. 🙂

I would love to see the marker when I visit someday. ^_^ Thanks for sharing these photos.

We also “dissected” the books during our subjects in Philippine history, or was it Filipino! Ang galing ng pagkakasulat.

Yes, let me know if you’re coming by for a visit…

Right? A real novelist that could twist something of a love story into historical lessons we of the future generations would learn from!

I should read the travel journal soon! This makes me want to reread Noli and Fili too!

For the last 3 days, they were conducted around the city by Mr. Masner to see the points of interest, especially the Museum. On this day, Rizal was interviewed by Mr. Alder of the newspaper Extra Blatt.

Travels of Rizal and Viola

DRESDEN, GERMANY

On May 11, 1887, Rizal and Viola boarded a train and headed for Europe as part of his grand tour. Dresden was the destination they were heading. Rizal was interested in botany, and their trip took place during the local floral exposition in Dresden. Dr. Adolph Meyer welcomed them with enthusiasm when they came to see him. The "ProMetheus Bound" picture in the art museum left a lasting impression on Rizal. At the floral exposition, they met Dr. Jagor. Dr. Jagor overheard their plans to travel to Leitmeritz (now Litomerice, Czechoslovakia). The doctor urged them to inform Blumentritt ahead of their visit because the old professor might be shocked by their unexpected arrival.

After departing Dresden for their next location at Treschen (Decin), Rizal and Viola sent a message to Blumentritt. At 1:30 on May 13, 1887, Blumentritt and Rizal had their first meeting. They arrived at Leimeritz's train station in Bohemia. Rizal and Viola were welcomed by Blumentritt. The two prominent scholars personally met and greeted one another in fluent German. Upon seeing the talented Rizal for the first time, He immediately took him into heart, and loved him as a son. The great professor Blumentritt's family was introduced to them. They stayed in Leitmeritz from May 13 to May 16, 1887. Rizal cherished the Blumentritt family's hospitality.

TESCHEN, CZECHOSLOVAKIA

At the University of Prague, he met professor Wilkom. The astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus' tomb, the Museum of Natural History, the Bacteriological Laboratories, the cave where Saint San Juan Nepomuceno was imprisoned, and the bridge on which he fell were all the places they learned about while in Prague.

Rizal and Viola discovered that Vienna was actually the "Queen of the Danube." This city fascinated Rizal because of its stunning structures, religious artwork, spooky waltzes, and majestic beauty. It was also in Vienna that they met Norfenfals, one of the greatest novelists of the time. That contributes to his creative inspiration as well.

MUNICH, GERMANY

For five days, Rizal and Viola stayed at the Rheinische Hof or Rhine Hotel in Munich to witness the Beer Festival.

After careful inspection by Rizal, they discovered the sights were the horrifying torture devices used by the Inquisition. The Nuremberg doll factory had a lasting impression on Viola and Rizal. Ulm was their next stop after Munich. That's when they discovered that the cathedral in the city was the biggest and tallest in all of Germany.

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

Rizal and Viola went to Geneva as well. They discovered that the Swiss city is one of the most scenic in all of Europe and attracts a lot of foreign tourists every year. Rizal had extensive conversations with the Genevans in three languages since they were linguists. German, Italian, and French.

Hotel Metropol as a historical landmark

May is a beautiful month of spring. One wakens to chirping of birds as the sun rises. Trees slowly fill with varying tones of green foliage again. Fruit trees like apricots and apples display flowering buds, the leafless magnolias now bedecked with myriads of its sweet-scented flowers. One cannot underrate the environmental effect specifically the beauty of nature on one´s disposition and general feelings. At this time of the year, people spend more time out of their homes, perhaps to shed off the constrictive atmosphere and cooped up state of mind after enduring the long foggy, months of autumn and the bone- chilling months of winter. As travelling companions, Jose Rizal and Maximo Viola must have experienced this wonderful spring-time sensation, a dynamic thrust of energy and enthusiasm. Both were at the transitional range between young-full-age of adulthood. Rizal was just a month near to his 26th birthday while Viola, who had finished his medical study a year before, was thirty years old.

While in Leitmeritz, Jose Rizal gave an extemporaneous speech, much to the bewilderment of the audience as it was delivered in the German language . He stated that solace can be found in the woods, and the rich beauty of nature – the flowers and the birds, provide relief to emotional discomforts and uplift a saddened spirit.

After a memorable encounter with Professor Ferdinand Blumentritt and enjoying the four-day stay in Leitmeritz, Rizal and Viola left on the 16th of May, travelled to Vienna via Prague and Bruenn, thereby covering a distance of over four hundred kilometres. Austria located in the heart of Europe, was at that time an empire covering areas of what is now Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia and some northern areas of Italy. Its capital city, Vienna was a thriving place in the fields of arts, education, music as well as in sciences particularly medicine. Both Rizal and Viola were well-educated Filipinos and must have learned the works of the Austrian neurologist, Ludwig Türck (“bundle of Turck”) and the physiologist Johann Nepomuk Czermak. These scientists introduced the use of laryngoscope. Another notable German-Austrian, Theodor Billroth had performed in 1881 a monumental pioneering work in abdominal surgery – a successful resection of the pylorus, a radical intervention in the treatment of the afflicted part of the stomach due to cancer. Most probably, they visited Vienna´s General Hospital (Allgemeines Krankenhaus) which had another famous doctor under its wing. The opthalmologist Ernst Fuchs (1851 -1930) was at that time the leading European doctor in this specialised field of medicine. His book, Textbook of Opthalmology, published in 1889 was considered internationally as “the bible of opthalmology.”

Who would not be impressed of the “Ring” or the Ringstrasse as it is correctly termed in the “the Austrian Way?” This wide street is formed like a ring, enclosing the architectural grandeur of the Habsburg dynasty as well as marking a linear demarcation between the members of the aristocracy, the opulent and famous from the middle class and the ordinary working citizens. Viola mentioned this impressive and historical part of Vienna. However, he failed to write what they saw. Going around the Ringstrasse, they could not have missed the following buildings:  Hofburg or the Royal Palace which was constructed in 1881. It was and still is the supreme seat of the government of Austria;  Parliament;  Rathaus or City Hall;  Burgtheater or the royal theatre;  University of Vienna founded in 1365, the oldest university in German-speaking countries;  Votivkirche. A catholic church in Gothic style, constructed in 1856 as an expression of gratitude over the unsuccessful assassination attempt on the reigning Emperor Franz Joseph.

While in Vienna, Jose Rizal and Maximo Viola stayed at one of its grand hotels - The Hotel Metropol. It was located inside the Ringstrasse and overlooking a branch line of the Danube River. These two non-Caucasian guests created quite a stir and novel impression, their presence was mentioned in the local newspaper.

It is quite a thing of wonder that time and events have ways of playing with what we generally term as history. From 1938 -1945, the grand Hotel Metropol became the headquarters of the Gestapo, the most feared Nazi military police. An abode which formerly provided sophisticated comfort was converted, half a century later, into a place of terror. Many succumbed to death due to brutality strategized in this very unlikely location.

Due to WWII bombing attacks, Hotel Metropol was heavily damaged. What was once built to showcase Austria´s economy at the World Exposition in 1873, the hotel became a detritus and was finally demolished in the late 1960´s. On its very site, a big building, though markedly less grand than its former one, was constructed and named as Leopold Figl Hof. The defeat of Germany and Austria led to political instability. Austria was occupied by military representatives of four nations – United States of America, France, England and Russia. Leopold Figl (1902-1965) as foreign minister played a key role in the attainment of Austrian independence in 1955. After signing the treaty (Staatsvertrag), Figl went to the balcony of the Belvedere Palace and announced to the awaiting public, “Austria is free” (“Österreich ist frei”). These are the words he is most remembered for and which are repeatedly quoted by television and radio communications network every 26th of October. Leopold Figl became the first federal chancellor of Austria after the Second World War.

On the 19th of June 1995, in commemoration of the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. José P. Rizal, Hon. Reynaldo O. Arcilla, then Philippine Ambassador to Austria, unveiled a historical marker at the Leopold Hof Building. The inscription tablet is mounted at the side of the main entrance. The translation from the German text reads: Dr. Jose P. Rizal (1861 – 1896) Dr. Jose Rizal, Philippine National Hero, stayed from 20th till the 24th of May 1887 in Hotel Metropol, which was located at this site. An Austrian teacher, Professor Ferdinand Blumentritt supported Rizal´s actions in Europe against the Spanish colonizers.

University of Passau Professor Emeritus Dr. Bernhard Dahm lectured about his recent publications on the Filipino national hero. For his part, Dr. Johann Stockinger of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna talked about Dr. Ferdinand Blumentritt's friendship with Dr. Rizal. Those who attended the symposium were Austrian government officials, academics, business community, and leaders of the Filipino community in Austria, including second generation Filipino-Austrians. Meanwhile, Yparraguirre awarded a Plaque of Recognition to Rizal-Blumentritt Society Austria (RBSA) President Dr. Angelina Del Rosario-Banke, in recognition and appreciation of her outstanding work as one of the founders of RBSA and her continued support and promotion of Philippine culture in Austria. The group includes five second-generation Filipino-Austrian artists, including:

  • Mia Banke (piano)
  • Aureen Quimzon (cello)
  • Valerie Hruska (violin)
  • Dominic Hruska (flute). Rizal (June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896), was a Filipino polymath, patriot and advocate of reform in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. His execution by the Spanish on December 30, 1896, a date commemorated annually as "Rizal Day," is believed to have sparked the Filipinos fight for freedom from the Spaniards. Rizal was born to a rich family in Calamba, Laguna. He was the seventh of eleven children. He went to the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, earning a Bachelor of Arts, and later enrolled in medicine at the University of Santo Tomas. He later studied at the Universidad Central de Madrid in Madrid, Spain, earning a Licentiate in Medicine. He also attended the University of Paris and earned a second doctorate at the University of Heidelberg. - VVP, GMA News

by Sarah Jozelle Magistrado ROJAS

Vienna, 29 December 2021

Complying with the CoViD-19 protocol for in person gatherings, the Philippine Embassy (PE) in Austria, headed by the recently arrived Consul General Ivan Frank M. Olea, organized the biggest face to face meet up with members of the Filipino community since the pandemic started in March 2020: the Commemoration of the 125 th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr Jose Rizal and Christmas Get Together on 29 December 2021 at its premises in Ares Towers, Donau City Straße 11, 1220 Vienna.

The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Rizal: Para sa Agham, Katotohanan at Buhay” (Rizal: For Science, Truth and Life) which dovetails neatly with the theme of the commemoration of the 75 th year of Philippine Austrian bilateral relations in 2021: “Bound by History; Enriched by Science and Culture”.

The programme included the welcome remarks of Chargé d’ affaires a.i. (CdA)/ Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) Ivan Frank M. Olea, and reading of excerpts from Rizal’s poem “Mi Ultimo Adios’ in Tagalog by Carol Constantino. Another part of the programme was the screening of the film “Tracing Rizal’s Steps in Vienna”, a documentary produced by the Philippine Embassy in honour of the 160th anniversary Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s birth, available on youtube: Tracing Rizal’s Steps in Vienna – YouTube .  The film screening was followed by a photo opportunity and the typical agape “salo salo” with Filipino dishes.

jose rizal travel in vienna austria

In his welcome remarks, CdA/DCM Olea, introduced himself, mentioning that the longest he has spent in the Foreign Service before coming to Austria was in Beijing, China. He had actively engaged with the Filcom in all his postings and intends to continue this, too, in Austria.

jose rizal travel in vienna austria

CdA/DCM Olea added that the three Pillars of Foreign Service are Political, Economic and Assistance to Nationals. Under the leadership of Ambassador Maria Cleofe R. Natividad, Science Diplomacy was introduced as the 4 th Pillar.

The Embassy wants to work closely with the FilCom to enhance the image of Filipinos and make people aware of the contributions of Filipinos to the development in Austria.

He assured everyone of the continued support of the Embassy for each organization’s activities and looks forward to working hand in hand with them in the coming years. In addition, he requested everyone’s help in engaging the youth.

CdA/DCM Olea encouraged registered Filipinos in Austria to exercise their right to suffrage, to vote in the coming election in May 2022. He also requested organizations to share information about their Officers which he will send to the Department of Foreign Affairs for inclusion in their master list of Philippine organizations worldwide.
