The hike to Eagle Lake is a great flat and easy trail to a remote lake. Eagle Lake is just outside of Calgary and sees much less traffic than some other inner-city trails. The trail is flat, which makes the distance more manageable. If you come at the right time of year, you will be greeted with plenty of wildflower blooms that brighten up the trail!

Route Description for Eagle Lake Trail

The Eagle Lake Trail is a scenic trail that sees little traffic in the summer. It is a flat route that is accessible on foot or bike. You’ll leave the parking area and head south for 5.2 km to the lake. On the way, you will be able to see plenty of greenery, some wildflowers, and possibly wildlife. Many types of birds gather at the lake, so bring some binoculars and a camera on this hike.

Many people skip the trail and drive further, stopping near the lake to catch a glimpse. This is why the trail is so quiet. This is an excellent option if you are travelling east and looking to spend a few hours getting some fresh air!

Getting to the Eagle Lake Trail Trailhead

To get to the Eagle Lake trailhead, follow Highway 1 east out of the city of Calgary for roughly 40.0 km towards Strathmore. Turn right onto Spruce Park Drive, following it for 650 m before turning left onto Slater Road. From here you will find the Eagle Lake Trailhead after 500 m .

Ken Tanigawa wins 2024 Rogers Charity Classic in Calgary

CALGARY — Waiting about 10 minutes to find out he won the 2024 Rogers Charity Classic didn’t bother Ken Tanigawa one bit.

After all, Tanigawa hadn’t experienced victory on the PGA Tour Champions circuit since winning the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship in June 2019.

“It has not sunk in, but it feels amazing,” said the 56-year-old American golfer, who was born in Japan but currently resides in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“Every year that goes by, you’re not getting younger. You kind of wonder, sure, if you’ll ever win. You sprinkle hope out there. You hope you can and you keep working at your game.”

A day after tying the course record at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club, Tanigawa had eight birdies during a round of 6-under 64 on Sunday to finish atop the leaderboard at 17 under.

“I played an amazing round yesterday, but you just let it go,” said Tanigawa, who won US$360,000. “You’re starting all over from scratch again today.

“I didn’t think about it or carry on. Expectations to shoot low weren’t there — not to play good nor bad. Just go out and you do your best from the first shot on and see what you can shoot.”

Tanigawa had already finished his round when he found out his final score of 193 was good enough to beat second-place finisher Richard Green by two strokes.

“I was told that Richard bogeyed 17, so he needed to eagle 18 and I knew it was hard to get home in two,” Tanigawa said. “You never know. Weird things happen in this game, so it was nice that it was over.”

Tied at 16 under with Green through 16 holes, Tanigawa birdied the par-4, 17th hole. Playing in the last group, Green bogeyed the hole and then only managed to par No. 18 to finish alone in second place at 15 under.

“It’s just a shame that things just at the end there didn’t really fall my way,” said Green, who finished second for the third time this season. “I thought they were going my way there a little bit through the middle of the round, and probably my start today (with a bogey on the first hole) didn’t really help me very much.

“It’s nice to be competing and contending for golf tournaments. It’s fun. I enjoy being out there contending week in, week out, and I’ll keep rattling the cage.”

Darren Clarke and Jason Caron finished in a tie for third at 14 under, while Mario Tiziani was alone in fifth at 13 under.

Canadian Golf Hall of Famers Stephen Ames and Mike Weir both shot rounds of 3-under 67 on Sunday.

Ames, a former Calgary resident, finished as the top Canadian at 10 under in a six-way tie for 10th place.

“It wasn’t the greatest ball striking, but I got it around,” Ames said. “I was able to capitalize on holes that I hit some good shots on and made birdies with it.

“Overall it was a bit up and down, but I think it was good that I was handling the bad shots and moving forward and not worrying about too much.”

Currently sitting second in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup money behind Ernie Els, who also finished at 10 under in Calgary, Ames received a nice ovation from the crowd when he walked up to the 18th green before tapping in his par putt.

“Every time I come back here I get that, so it’s wonderful,” Ames said. “No matter where I finish, you get that reward, which is nice. I think all our Canadian fellows get that.”

Weir finished the tournament in an eight-way tie for 20th at 8 under.

“Overall, I felt like I played pretty good so hopefully that will be momentum (for) next week,” said Weir, who will tee it up at The Ally Challenge in Grand Blanc, Mich., from next Thursday to Sunday.

“It’s phenomenal here at this event. This is one of the premium events on the PGA Tour Champions. The fan support is incredible for myself, Stephen and all the other Canadians, so it’s a great place to play.”

Alan McLean of London, Ont., carded an even-par round of 70 on Sunday to finish one shot back of Weir in a tie for 28th spot.

Gordon Burns of Ajax, Ont., carded a 2-under round of 68 on Sunday to finish the event in a tie for 73rd at 4 over, while Calgary’s Steve Blake shot 79 and finished well back of the leaders at 22 over.

Bold Eagle 2024 congratulates 72 program graduates

Caf welcomes 38 new recruits from graduating class.

August 15, 2024 - Lt Margaret Tapia Manangan, Bold Eagle 2024 Platoon Commander, Taypotat Platoon

Bold Eagle started in 1989 as a joint venture between the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

Bold Eagle is conducted out of A Company, 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, in Wainwright, Alta. It is the first, oldest and largest of the five Indigenous Summer Programs run across the CAF.

This program grants Indigenous recruits the opportunity to learn military dress and deportment, and theoretical and practical skills including weapons handling, navigation and fieldcraft. Candidates also have the chance to develop physical and social skills, including communication and teamwork.

Successful completion awards the candidates the Primary Reserve Basic Military Qualification and the opportunity to continue to serve upon completion of the course.

Bold Eagle candidates are divided into three platoons, each named after notable Indigenous soldiers: Taypotat Platoon, after Captain (Retired) Evan Taypotat from 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (1 PPCLI) and Chief of Kahkewistahaw First Nation; Pechawis Platoon, after Virginia Pechawis, a Second World War veteran and Canada’s oldest female Indigenous veteran; and Wolfe Platoon, after Corporal (Ret.) Kelly Wolfe from 2 PPCLI and Chief of Muskeg Lake Cree Nation.

Bold Eagle 2024 marks the 34th year of the program. This year, 72 candidates participated in the graduation parade on Aug. 8. About one third of the candidates are female, and the ages range from as young as 16 to the age of 35.

The candidates arrived at 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton Detachment Wainwright (3 CDSB Edmonton Det Wainwright) on July 2. After completing their in-clearance admin and participating in a three-day Culture Camp led by Elders, they were officially entrusted to their military leaders, who inherited the responsibility of soldier development.

Major Christopher Nixon, Officer Commanding of A Company, reflected on the work those military leaders did.

“I am extremely proud of these soldiers,” he said.

Throughout the weeks of training, candidates received ample classroom instruction on CAF policies and procedures, and learned the rank structures, military drill and how to operate a C7A2 service rifle. Their daily routine also included physical training, dress and room inspections, and cleaning and maintenance of living quarters.

When asked about the quick switch from their former civilian lifestyle to the rigorous military routine, Private Shaila McCurdy, candidate from Taypotat Platoon, said it definitely was a change.

“The military lifestyle is a very different lifestyle than what I was used to, but adjusting wasn’t that hard because the military is founded on teamwork,” she said. “As soon as I figured out how to communicate and work with my platoon, everything fell into place … especially since the staff are very clear on expectations.”

A highlight of the program was the Career Day, where candidates and staff took a day trip to 3 CDSB Edmonton and toured the 1 PPCLI, 3 PPCLI and 1 Combat Engineer Regiment unit lines.

Following the career day, candidates were given the opportunity to fill out occupational transfer paperwork, stating their intent to either join the Army in the Reserve Force or the Regular Force. Extra mentorship was given at the platoon level following the event by staff of all different entry plans and trades.

Lieutenant Margaret Tapia Manangan, platoon officer of Taypotat Platoon, prepared a summative presentation on the reserve units by province, and the common combat and support trades found within each unit.

“I wanted to show the candidates just how accessible a job in the military can be, and that there really is an occupation for everyone, for all skill levels and all interests,” she said.

With the success of career day and combined efforts of platoon staff, 38 course candidates have elected to continue service in the CAF.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a military course without the candidates getting the chance to put all the skills they learned in class to the test. Candidates participated in Rappel Tower training; a Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear (CBRN) gas hut; C7A2 simulator and live ranges; and a daytime navigation exercise out in the field.

At the time of writing, Bold Eagle candidates are confirming their skills in preparation for their final test, a two-day and one-night field exercise in the Wainwright Training Area. It is during this exercise where they learn and practise fieldcraft and the basics of operation and defense of their bivouac site.

Master Corporal Manraj Grewal, section commander from Taypotat platoon, reflected proudly on the candidates’ progress.

“Their growth from civilians to soldiers has been truly remarkable,” they said. “The hard work and dedication put in by staff and students is really a testament to the Bold Eagle program and speaks volumes with regards to the tenacity of the candidates. It’s exciting watching them develop knowing one day, some of them may be on a trace with me. The transformation really happens when they put their hearts into it and display perseverance.”

Upon completion of the graduation parade, planning for the next year of Bold Eagle will commence. The staff discuss lessons learned and best practices to follow in order to build on previous success.

As for the program graduates, in sharing their experiences and successes with their friends and families back home, they will motivate their fellow community members to challenge themselves and apply to be potential candidates themselves.

“During my time here, I’ve gained confidence and spirit as a team member,” said Pte Byron Sebesteny, a candidate with Taypotat Platoon. “If there is anything I have to say, [it] is that this is the most exciting opportunity you could choose. From the ruck marches to the rappel tower, you will learn so much and gain so much more as a person too!”

Bold Eagle candidates and staff traveled to Tsuu T'ina Nation just outside of Calgary, Alta., on July 27. The course had the privilege of participating in the grand entry of a Pow Wow and watching the rest of the cultural events.

Ken Tanigawa surged to victory, proving to be the best golfer at the 2024 Rogers Charity Classic at Canyon Meadows.

Rogers Charity Classic: Ken Tanigawa wins, but Calgary’s Steve Blake was best story Back to video

Calgary’s own Steve Blake ultimately finished in the last slot on the leaderboard. Nonetheless, he was the best story.

The 56-year-old Tanigawa, who completed three laps at 17-under 193, wasn’t sure if he’d win another one of these. It had been five-plus years since he claimed his last tournament title.

Blake, also 56, was thrilled to have an opportunity to play another one of these. This was his third start on PGA Tour Champions, but the first since he was diagnosed last September with Stage 4 lung cancer, which came with the devastating estimate from his doctor that he had between 12-24 months to live.

Around the same time that Tanigawa’s two-stroke triumph was sealed Sunday afternoon, with Richard Green needing an eagle on No.18 to force a playoff but opting to lay up with his second shot from the right rough, Blake was tapping in for bogey on the ninth green.

He was embraced by his son Connor, a professional hockey player who doubled all week as dad’s caddie. The rest of the family — Kelly and daughter Brooklyn, a midfielder for the Calgary Foothills soccer club  — soon joined them just steps from the flag for an emotional hug.

There were not a lot of dry eyes on the green or in the gallery, where there were dozens of folks in matching red shirts, announcing their inclusion in ‘Blaker’s Army.’

“It’s a little early to put it all into words right now,” Blake said moments after signing for a three-round total of 22-over 232. “But knowing my son is leaving to go to France tomorrow (for training camp) and to be able to spend this quality time with him on the course, that was so motivating and so special for all of us to be able to walk the fairways together before he goes.

“And then the army … Especially today, maybe even half of yesterday, that was what got me through the days. You know, I was getting pretty tired. I was not going to take a cart, though, as much to prove to myself as to everybody that is going through what I’m going through that you can do it. Just keep going. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

“I will sleep for probably the next two or three days to try to recover. But it was so, so worth it.”

Tanigawa, who presumably counts several snowbirds from Calgary as neighbours in Scottsdale, Ariz., put a scorecard on the clubhouse wall Saturday, matching the course record at Canyon Meadows with a superb spin of 9-under 61. That included an ace on No. 16.

Twenty-four hours later, he put his name on the trophy.

He mixed eight birdies, eight pars and a pair of bogeys in his final cruise around this 7,093-yard layout.

Green, who teed off Sunday with a one-stroke lead, settled for second at 15-under 195. That was one better than both Darren Clarke and Jason Caron, who shared third.

“A little lost for words,” said Tanigawa, who had gone 123 starts between Ws. “It has been a long time, since 2019, to be in this position. Time goes by and you wonder if you can win again. To be able to do it, I’m just over the moon.”

With all due respect to Tanigawa, Tom Lehman was among those who realized late Sunday afternoon that the best story was unfolding on another part of the property.

At the Par-3 ninth, Blake tugged his tee-ball into a sand-trap left of the green. With an awkward stance, one foot in the bunker and the other in the rough, he splashed a delicate shot to about eight feet.

It’s a shame he didn’t sink the par putt, but his supporters — family, friends, fellow members at Hamptons Golf Club and complete strangers who he has inspired since his tournament invite was announced — roared anyway.

He tapped his heart in a show of thanks, wiping away tears.

Hank Kim, his playing partner for three consecutive days, declined the standard handshake and demanded a hug.

Lehman, both the British Open champion and the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year in his dream season of 1996, was waiting near the scoring tent to offer his congratulations. He told Blake: “I’m pulling for you.”

The PGA Tour Champions pros have another event this coming week in Michigan. Blake has a meeting with his doctor to schedule his next treatment after needing a brief pause “due to some side-effects that I was trying to battle through.”

“Touch wood, everything was trending the right direction,” Blake said. “We just need to get back on it and hopefully the news will continue to be good as it goes along.

“Everyone who shares a similar story, I hope they found some motivation out of this,” he added after the conclusion of the 2024 Rogers Charity Classic, where he contributed to the Birdies for Kids fundraising effort with six circles on his tournament scorecard. “I can’t believe the number of people who have been able to read my story and relate to it and the comments that come from it. They get behind you and it’s always, ‘Keep fighting. Keep fighting.’ And that’s my message to everybody else, whether they’re going through it themselves or to all the people that are their support staff, like my family. They’re a huge part of this. They’re in it, as well. So keep fighting, for them too. Keep going.

“With everybody having the right attitude, nothing is unbeatable. Nothing. No matter what the doctors tell you or what the statistics say, you can beat stuff. You just have to stay with it.”

CHIP SHOTS : The field for the 2024 Rogers Charity Classic featured three World Golf Hall of Fame inductees and all finished in the Top 10. Padraig Harrington earned a slice of seventh at 11-under, while Ernie Els and Vijay Singh were T-10 at 10-under … Stephen Ames, a former Calgary resident, was also T-10. He remains second to Els on the Charles Schwab Cup money list … Mike Weir, who was T-20 at 8-under, didn’t leave empty-handed. Continuing a tradition that started a few years back, tournament volunteer Ashley Proceviat gifted Weir a couple of jars or homemade raspberry jam … A polite golf clap for Calgary-based course designer Wade Horrocks, who was hired to rebuild the 14th green at Canyon Meadows and did a dandy job of it. Sunday’s pin position, perched on a ridge on the right side of the dance floor, caused fits for a bunch of the players … Lauren Coughlin, who earned her first LPGA Tour victory a few ago at the CPKC Women’s Open at Earl Grey, triumphed again Sunday at the Women’s Scottish Open.
