After Five Years of Waiting, Taylor Swift Delivers Pure Magic

Swift’s three-night Philadelphia stand served as a fiery confetti-cannon reminder that the artist's greatest strength is always her connection with her fans.

The sunburn was the first giveaway — bright and pink on their shoulders and stretching across their cheeks. The “13” and “Lover” tattoos on Christina Zilocchi’s right arm were the second, two symbols of a fandom that brought her from Hightstown, New Jersey, in the dark of night to secure her place at the front of the Lincoln Financial Field ticket line — a line for hopers and lovers and wildest dreamers who pushed aside common sense on the off chance a Taylor Swift ticket would miraculously appear.

By 6 p.m. Friday, 13 hours after taking her spot at the front of the line, the 19-year-old was still ticketless.

“It’s just the power of the fandom,” she said alongside her friend and fellow sunburnt Swiftie Emily Poulter. “Taylor has been my favorite artist for forever.”

The two stood before a line of dozens, all hoping, praying, that somehow the ticket gods would open the heavens and sprinkle tickets down from above. They shared phone chargers and held each other’s places in line as nature beckoned them to the Port-a-Potties. As the day progressed and overzealous mothers walked past the line and straight to the ticket window, hoping for the same last-minute miracle, the line-sitters glared.

I wished Christina and Emily luck, but having passed dozens of handmade EXTRA TICKETS? PLEASE!! signs on the brief walk from the subway to the stadium, I knew their night likely wouldn’t end within its walls.

A few minutes earlier, my friend Molly and I had climbed aboard the Broad Street Line and into the Amazon. “It’s like Titanic ,” she said, as the train windows fogged with body heat to the point where condensation was collecting and dripping in quick, greasy streaks down the windows. Makeup ran, armpits saturated, but no one truly, really, cared. What’s 15 minutes on the train to Buson if you’ve waited five years or a lifetime to see Taylor Swift?

My own experience with Swift started back in 2008, as the album that launched her into mega-stardom, Fearless , was released. I was introduced to her through a short Washington Post profile written by J. Freedom du Lac, and, skeptical of anything country and borderline hostile to anything pop-country, I flippantly burned Fearless onto a CD. Within one play, the hook was set. The following spring, I took a road trip with two similarly skeptical friends. We spent the whole 2,300-mile drive scanning the radio to find “Love Story,” Swift’s paean to young love. In retrospect, the song set the path for 15 years of Swift — forbidden love, shifting narrators, swelling bridges.

On the final leg of the trip, somewhere between Atlanta and D.C., on the umpteenth listen, one of my companions chimed up from the back seat: “Oh, now I get it.”

I thought about that moment nine songs into Swift’s set, as the track’s opening banjo plucks coursed through the stadium and the sell-out crowd screamed and chanted and lurched. “We were both young when I first saw you,” she sang with 67,000 back-up singers, myself included. As an artist grows and you grow, your relationship with that artist’s music changes. In 2008, unmarried, childless, world at my feet, I connected with the protagonists, young and in love, ready to do anything to be together. Fifteen years later, I found myself in the audience, not connecting with the characters, but rather cheering them on. Yes, it’s worth it, keep fighting.

In those 15 years, I’ve gotten married and had two children. They’re perfect, those three, and they’ve forced me to tear down and reconstruct my entire perspective on life and love, rebuilding my definition of both to focus on them. So it’s unsurprising that later in the set, as the 2020 novella “Betty” trickled out through the stadium, my attention steered to my kids. I was no longer in these stories; they were. They were skateboarding and navigating summer love and feeling that deep mourning that only a teenage breakup can bring.

And that’s okay — nay, even good. It’s part of the magic of Swift’s catalog, the world she’s built, that I can enjoy these songs in a totally different way than I first did. That’s not due to any magical thinking on my part; it’s because she’s crafted these malleable worlds that say C ome on in to anyone who’s willing to listen.

It would be malpractice to spend this story simply navel-gazing and not allowing a bit of time to discuss the fact that, fairly unequivocally, this was one of the best stadium shows I’ve ever witnessed, a three-hour pummeling of confetti and fire that made us all feel we were in a snow globe, removed from the outside world. Swift played her two best albums — Red and Folklore — back to back, brilliantly using the 10-minute version of “All Too Well” to span the two stylistically antithetical albums. (I’m eagerly anticipating any mail regarding my top-albums assertion.) Swift’s crowd-work was commanding and charming in equal parts, inviting the crowd in while still reminding them why they were there.

We’ve all aged so much in the past five years, as the pandemic warped our sense of time and longevity. It’s clear these years have taken an emotional toll on Swift, and she admitted as much onstage.

“I write my feelings down, and then I sing them to you,” she said. “And eventually I feel better.”

Nearly four hours after we all crushed into the stadium, Swift released us back into the South Philly air, full of hope and glitter and maybe a few hard seltzers. The next day, on Saturday afternoon, I got a text from Christina Zilocchi, whom I’d met online outside the Linc.

“Just wanted to let you know we did not get tickets,” she said. “Sadly no luck on our end.”

I texted back my condolences and, expecting her to be crestfallen, received an uplifting text in return.

“Going into it I knew we had to expect not to get tickets so we weren’t that disappointed,” she said. “ … but at least we tried!”

Here’s hoping she’ll make her way inside, this week or 15 years down the road. Either way, Swift will be waiting, however old Zilocchi is when she finally finds her.

Taylor Swift Eras Tour Philadelphia concert review: A pop masterclass, and unreal homecoming show

Three hours and 15 minutes. Forty five songs. A profoundly satisfying adventure through a prolific catalog, with 70,000 devout fans coveting every deep cut, belting each obscure lyric with spiritual revelry.

Sound familiar? There’s a new Boss in town.

On her mammoth new Eras Tour , Taylor Swift has recalibrated the bar for pop stadium spectacle, outdoing even her previous monolithic and record-breaking roadshows in scale (52 sold-out U.S. stadiums, international to come) and further strengthening her bond to a fanbase unmatched in its dedication to the celestial Swiftie-verse.

The ultra-star commandeered Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia Friday night, her first tri-state area concert in five years and the first of three de-facto homecoming shows this weekend. Swift, 33, was raised an hour west in Wyomissing, Pa. before relocating to Nashville as a young teen.

“I grew up just down the road,” Swift noted to the deafening audience, many of whom donned costumes mirroring past music videos (a powder-wigged “Bejeweled” duo were a personal favorite). “You spend your whole childhood with your dad watching Eagles games on TV …” she added, continuing on about how she’d never dreamed she’d be playing a stadium in her neighboring city.

Of course, Taylor’s already been at this a while — her “1989″ (2015 ) and “Reputation” (2018) tours also played football stadiums in most American cities, including Philly. But heading into 2023, Swift was, to some extent, a victim of her own success: Since her last tour, she’s amassed a backlog of six No. 1 albums (“Lover,” 2019; “Folklore” and “Evermore, 2020; re-releases of “Fearless (Taylor’s Version” and “Red” (Taylor’s Version),” 2021; and “Midnights,” 2022; all of them co-produced by New Jersey’s Jack Antonoff ).

For a pop deity to tally more than 80 new or previously unreleased songs between tours is unheard of. So came the question: How could Swift possibly build a concert that pays homage to hits new and old, and not balloon the thing into an unmanageable marathon?

Simple: She would indeed play the lengthiest shows of her career, and manage it just fine, thanks.

“We’re going to go on a journey … through 17 years of music, one era at a time,” Swift declared early in the show, her perfectly straightened bangs not yet curled from sweat. “I’ll be your host, my name’s Taylor.”

As with all things Swift, each moment across her highly glamoured pop endurance test — broken into 10, mostly album-specific segments — was meticulously plotted. While Swift doesn’t dare attempt the intense pop-and-lock choreography of a Beyonce or Jennifer Lopez, her “crowd work” is unmatched — the finger points and happy waves; the knowing winks, nods and glances; the blue-eyed stares directly into the sea of iPhone cameras, so every fan believes their dirty-blonde demigoddess is looking at them only.

Swift has built a career toeing the line between vulnerable relatability — like your lovelorn school friend, whose heart has been shattered a dozen different ways — and untouchable, Barbie doll-like aura. She’s just like us, only better in every conceivable way.

And as the show went on, Swift delivered again and again, touching both ends of her aesthetic spectrum. For the new “Evermore” song “Marjorie,” written about Swift’s late grandmother, the crowd lit up the stadium with tens of thousands of swaying, twinkling phone lights. Swift’s perfectly lined eyes began to well immediately. She composed herself and sang through it, thanking the audience upon the song’s conclusion: “That was really nice of you,” she said, “that’s the most incredibly personal song you could have done that for.”

She continued in that moment, laying on the hometown shtick. “Pennsylvania is where my childhood … all the imagination and daydreaming, creating dramatic scenarios in my head to write down later (began). … All my memories with my grandmother happened in Pennsylvania.”

Surely Swift will save anecdotes from her summers at the Jersey Shore for her upcoming trio of MetLife Stadium shows in East Rutherford May 26 to 28. Swift’s family owned a home in Stone Harbor for much of her youth.

Yes, the intimate, fan-tethering moments were special and very welcome. But then there was the reality of the performance, the immensity of the production, the nine costume changes, the smoke, the fire, the utter euphoria and mayhem of a concert with such maniacal anticipation finally becoming real. Here were a few choice moments:

  • During her “Red” session, Swift unloaded the updated, 10-minute version of her most beloved ballad “All Too Well,” and during the cresting bridge — “maybe we got lost in translation …” — the sing-along was so outrageously emphatic, it’s unclear how the neighboring Walt Whitman Bridge didn’t crumble into the Delaware. This moment rivaled the loudest collective human sounds I’ve ever heard; up there with BTS and Metallica. The song finished with a rain of snow-like confetti (bound to another lyric, of course), which fans naturally scooped into their pockets as keepsakes.
  • For “Reputation,” Swift stood at the center of her enormous catwalk, on steps rising from the stage for “Don’t Blame Me,” and unleashed a soaring, gospel-like belt — the night’s finest vocal moment — summoning beams of light from the stage several hundred feet into the South Philly sky. Surely this could have been seen from Gloucester County.
  • As songs from “Midnights,” her newest world-beating album, finished the set, Swift and her troupe of dancers took a more sultry approach to her thumping “Vigilante S***,” performing a smoldering chair dance unthinkable during Swift’s early, squeaky-clean days on country radio.

While all of those moments are built into each night’s performance, the Eras Tour has since its March kickoff been defined by its surprise songs — two per show, with hundreds of thousands of fans watching fans’ TikTok live-streams from home. Swift performs these solo, harkening back to her earliest days; one on acoustic guitar, one on a cabinet piano painted with a rainbow of flowers. This night, she debuted on guitar “Gold Rush,” a winning burner off “Evermore,” which fittingly mentions an Eagles t-shirt in its lyrics (there was some debate over whether the line referenced the band or the football team; Swift confirmed the latter).

She followed it with “Come Back … Be Here,” a deep cut from “Red,” at the request of her opening act, indie darling Phoebe Bridgers (who also emerged earlier to perform their sweeping 2021 duet, “Nothing New.”)

For sake of brevity, I won’t indulge further into the other 40 or so songs’ individual stagings, which shifted from vivid, maximalist pop bedlam (“Cruel Summer,” “Blank Space”) to mossy cottage-core (“The 1″) and witchy interpretive dance (”Willow”).

Just know this is the tour. The tour against which all other A+ level pop extravaganzas will now be measured. If you snagged seats for one of the MetLife shows or elsewhere, prepare not only for a magnificent and endlessly exciting cross-section of Swift’s career — a millennial-distinguishing songbook, delivered at the height of her power — but for what may go down as the pop-culture experience of the decade.

It’s been a long time coming.

Taylor Swift's 'The Eras Tour' comes to Philadelphia for three shows this weekend

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Taylor Swift 's record-breaking "The Eras Tour" comes to Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

While it's not exactly a homecoming for the megastar, her Berks County roots certainly give T-Swift an area connection. Her family still resides in Wyomissing, where her father, Scott K. Swift, is a financial advisor.

This is Swift's 32nd concert in her home state and it is taking place just across the street from one of the first major Pa. venues where she performed.

Swift sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Citizens Bank Park for the 2008 World Series. It came just days before the release of her smash sophomore album, "Fearless," which would launch the first concert tour of her career six months after the Phillies world championship.

In a 2009 interview with writer Erica Finamore at UDaily , a promotional publication produced by the University of Delaware's Office of Communications and Marketing, the elder Swift revealed how that World Series appearance came about.

“The reason she sang the anthem is because two University of Delaware alumni kept in touch over the years,” said the 71-year-old, who graduated from University of Delaware in 1974.

UD alum Michael DiMuzio, the now-retired longtime director of ballpark operations for the Philadelphia Phillies, would meet up with Swift once a year for a reunion and through that connection Taylor landed the anthem gig.

In the '09 interview, Scott Swift joked about how his daughter's success had sparked messages from plenty of old college buds: “You can either go on classmates.com or have a daughter who sells 10 million CDs.”

The head of Merrill Lynch's Wyomissing-based The Swift Group told UDaily that former college classmates would reach out when his daughter was performing in their hometown, even back then.

“I've heard from a lot of great alumni and I'm convinced they live in every city because whenever Taylor's rolling into wherever she is, we'll hear from them,” he said.

TAYLOR SWIFT IN NASHVILLE: 5 moments from her remarkable return on the 'Eras' tour

It'll be tough scoring "Eras" tickets for the alum. The entire tour is effectively sold out, including Swift's Philadelphia concerts, at which Phoebe Bridgers opens all three shows and GAYLE is also on the Friday and Saturday bills.

Back in December, a full three months before "Eras" launched, the Wall Street Journal reported only 6% of tickets were still available for the tour, which will wrap up Aug. 9 in Inglewood, California's SoFi Stadium.

Even though she has performed only 16 of the tour's 52-date U.S. stadium trek, she has already broken some records. They include the female artist who has performed to the largest crowd in American history. It happened when she kicked off the tour for more than 69,000 fans in Glendale, Arizona, beating Madonna's record from 1987.

Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour,’ a 27-date U.S. stadium tour in 2023, is coming to Philly for two shows in May

The pop superstar, whose new "Midnights" album is in contention to be the most successful of her career, will play two shows at Lincoln Financial Field on May 12 and 13.

Taylor Swift is coming to Lincoln Financial Field for two dates in May on a new tour.

Taylor Swift is coming to Philadelphia.

The Wyomissing-raised pop superstar’s new Midnights album is in contention to be the most successful of her career. It has sold over 1 million copies in its first week of release, and its songs occupy all Top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

On Tuesday, Swift announced a 2023 U.S. concert trek of football stadiums that she’s calling “The Eras Tour.” It begins in March in Arizona and wraps up in August in Los Angeles and includes two dates at Lincoln Financial Field on May 12 and 13.

The show will be Swift’s first in Philadelphia since she played two dates at the Linc in 2018 on her Reputation tour.

Since then, the 32-year-old Berks County native has been busy. She put out Lover in 2019 and then Midnights that released last month.

When COVID-19 kept her from touring behind that music, Swift released two quarantine-recorded folk-rock albums in 2020, Folklore and Evermore. And in 2021, she released re-recorded versions of her albums Fearless and Red , which originally came out in 2008 and 2012.

All of that activity will presumably be reflected in the Eras tour, whose artwork is a collage of looks Swift has sported through her 16-year recording career.

The opening acts on the tour are all ones that Swift has championed, including sister band Haim and singer and dancer Owenn. Phoebe Bridgers and Gayle — the stage name of Plano, Texas, songwriter Taylor Gayle Rutherford — will open the Philly shows.

To make sure things go smoothly this weekend, here are some important tips from Nicole Pivonka, an advanced practice nurse with Virtua Health.

Protect your ears

The loud music and screaming fans can take a toll on your hearing. Pivonka said to avoid potential long-term damage, wear ear plugs or other devices to help reduce the decibels or lessen ambient noise.

Wear sensible shoes

Most concert-goers will be standing or dancing for the three-hour concert, and don't forget about the pre-show festivities.

"People put a lot of thought into their Eras outfit. I encourage them to make sensible shoes part of the overall ensemble," Pivonka said.

Spare your vocal cords

While singing along is inevitable, Pivonka recommends moderation to avoid losing your voice or, worse, causing damage.

taylor swift fearless tour philadelphia

If you are hoarse or raspy the day after the concert, that is most likely not a reason for concern. If those symptoms persist beyond 24 hours, consult a medical professional.

Wear sunscreen

We all know the event will be a day-long celebration. Do not forget your SPF.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water will help you stay healthy during and after the concert. Pivonka suggests that fans can avoid "Champagne Problems" by consuming one or more servings of water in between any alcoholic beverages.

Bring basic supplies

Don't forget things like aspirin, band-aids, and hand sanitizer.

"Of course, my number one tip is to just enjoy and have fun," Pivonka said. "It's all about making memories."

SEPTA running additional late-night service

SEPTA is helping fans get to Lincoln Financial Field by offering extra service on the Broad Street Line for the Taylor Swift concerts all weekend long.

Friday, May 12: Five local trains will leave Fern Rock Transportation Center at 6:08, 6:18, 6:28 6:38, and 6:48 p.m. These local trains will make all stops at NRG Station.

LIVE REVIEW: Taylor Swift at Lincoln Financial Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 12th, 2023

Taylor Swift

When it comes to writing a review of a Taylor Swift concert, it’s hard to find the right words to describe just how amazing the show she puts on really is. How can one accurately portray the level of detail and costuming that goes into this 45 song show? How can I describe the energy that I felt surging throughout the crowd throughout every single song for three hours straight? There really are no words that can truly sum up the absolute joy and privilege it was to attend a Taylor Swift show, let alone her hometown show.

Every single seat in Lincoln Financial Stadium was full, and the “Swifties” were all in the most amazing costumes I’ve ever seen- ranging from tiaras and sashes for “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince”, to groups of girls dawning fake beards and wigs to dress as her character from “The Man.” While I was outside waiting to pick up my ticket and press pass I ran into a couple of fans who didn’t even have tickets for the show tonight and just wanted to hear her from the parking lot. Now, if you’re a fan of Taylor, you know all about “The Great War” with Ticketmaster, and you know that many fans (including myself) did not survive. Instead of giving up though, along with many other fans, as ticket holders entered the stadium, those without remained outside to enjoy the show. If they couldn’t see her, then they could at least hear her with hundreds of other fans.

I unfortunately can’t review much of GAYLE’s or Phoebe’s sets since we had to leave the photo pit after the first two songs, but from what I did hear, it’s no wonder why Taylor chose them to open this leg of the Era’s Tour. The energy they both brought to their respective sets was on par with Taylor’s and you can tell that the fans went crazy.

As Taylor’s time to take the stage approached, a huge clock started counting down on the massive screen starting from 2 and a half minutes. Before you knew it, the door lifted and dancers with huge colorful fans started walking out to “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince” and Taylor herself shot up from the bottom of the stage with the most amazing and seamless transition into “Cruel Summer”.

taylor swift fearless tour philadelphia

As “Cruel Summer” winded down, Taylor returned to the main stage from the B Stage, and began her first second change of many for the night and began singing (one of my personal favorites) “The Man”. As a woman working in an industry dominated by men for years, I have always resonated with “The Man’s” lyrics and I love how Taylor was able to put all of those frustrations so eloquently in not only a song, but an anthem for many women working in a heavily male dominated world.

taylor swift fearless tour philadelphia

After running back to my car to drop my gear off, I made it back to my seat just in time to hear “The Archer” and the tears started to flow. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was, and how grateful I was to not only be here to witness this amazing show, but be able to capture it as well.

If you don’t know, Taylor’s Eras Tour is split up into different “Eras” aka Taylor Swift albums and after opening up with Lover, Taylor proceeds to another costume change and an album most people will definitely be familiar with- Fearless. Back on stage now in a beautiful gold fringe dress, Taylor sings hit songs, “Fearless,” “You Belong With Me,” and “Love Story.” In my opinion, opening up the tour with these amazing, upbeat, and nostalgic songs was a genius move and really got the entire stadium engaged- even the boyfriends who didn’t want to be there or the parents who had to chaperone their kids- she proved very early on that a Taylor Swift concert truly is for everyone.

taylor swift fearless tour philadelphia

After Fearless, and another outfit change, Taylor transitions into hit songs from Evermore including fan favorite “Champagne Problems” where the crowd erupted into a huge standing ovation for her. Along with the many songs she performed, Taylor also got really personal with the crowd recounting her writing process, life and writing during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and tells the audience how there are a couple new members to her musical family, “Folklore, “Evermore,” and the newest addition- “Midnights”

The chill vibes of Evermore are drawing to a close as Taylor brings the energy back with the introduction of her Reputation era. As a huge snake slithers across the screens in the arena, fans start losing their heads as “Ready for It” begins- a song that many people predicted would actually open the tour. The choreography in this section, in my opinion, was one of the most technical parts of the entire show with dancers surrounding her, moving from one raising platform to another, and multiple marks to hit- which as always, Taylor does without missing a single step.

Although Taylor announced the re-released version of Speak Now (TV) a couple of days ago, Enchanted is still the only song we hear on the tour from everyone’s beloved purple album. Even though it’s the only song, Taylor definitely does it justice by coming out in a magnificent ball gown adorned in gems and glitter and dazzles the crowd with her vocals.

After the end of the song we see a huge Red box come out onto the stage as the dancers begin to lift the lid, and after each lift, we hear a different song from her Red era (another crowd pleaser) By this point, through my tears, I honestly begin to wonder how Taylor has the energy to do this night after night. Between the dancing, costume changes, her energy never once wavered and truly made sure that everyone was having a great time as the iconic first notes of “22” start playing and Taylor comes out in her white T-shirt, signature red lipstick, and black hat which she gives away to a fan every night- making the experience even more special. A great surprise for a lot of fans was when Taylor brought out opener Phoebe Bridgers to join her on stage and sing “Nothing New” together which caused my seat-mate to burst into tears (same girl same) and then finished out the Red Era with the 10 Minute version of All Too Well.

taylor swift fearless tour philadelphia

Next came the Folklore part of the night where she sang hits such as “Cardigan,” “August,” “The Last Great American Dynasty” which had the most beautiful old ballgowns and a dance to match the storyline in the song which 100% looked like it was straight out of Netflix’s Bridgerton which fits since she is the queen of bridges lets be real.

As Folklore came to a close, the dancers and Taylor were nearing the 1989 Era which got the stadium back up on their feet ready to dance along to “Style” and “Shake It Off.” Some fans even went to the back of the floor to freely dance and I couldn’t help but see a security guard or two even singing along and smiling at all the adoring fans having a great time.

Just before Taylor’s last “Era” “Midnights,” she makes it a tradition to surprise the audience with two different songs every single night that are not on her setlist and what other song is she going to sing in Philly other than “Gold Rush.” In the song there’s a lyric that goes “I see me padding across your wooden floors, With my Eagles T-shirt hanging from the door,” so obviously that was going to be one of the surprise songs for the night. Before she started the song she even mentioned how there’s a debate online whether the Eagles t-shirt referenced in the song is about the football team (Philly’s home team) or the band and she cleared it up for everyone saying it was definitely the football team which caused the stadium to explode in applause. The next surprise song was off of her album “Red” and it was “Come Back Be Here,” which then prompted immediate tears to fall from my eyes as I never thought I’d ever hear that song live. The lyrics in all of Taylor’s songs just tell such amazing stories but the emotions she goes through during “Come Back Be Here” truly resonate with anyone going through a long distance relation- whether you’re in NYC, London, or anywhere else in the world- Taylor has the superpower to put into words what hundreds of thousands of people feel everyday.

The night ends with Taylor’s “Midnights” Era as dancers start filling the stage with these huge purple clouds and Taylor rising on a platform to start singing “Lavender Haze.” The set was designed so it looked as if Taylor was singing on top of clouds for the people sitting up in the 200’s and 300’s section, and even from the floor it looked absolutely magical. Taylor ended the night with “Karma” as confetti and fireworks erupted from the sky- thousands of people cheered her name and didn’t want to leave.

Even after 45 songs and 3+ hours, it felt as though the entire show went by in the blink of an eye. No other performer does it like Taylor Swift, and I can’t think of another artist who can perform 45 songs back to back and still have the same energy like it’s night 1 of the tour. Swifties have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars to be there that night, and I have to say, it was definitely worth it. I would see Taylor again any day of the week, rain or shine, in a storm in my best dress, or at midnight every day. I truly feel like The Lucky One for being able to photograph and review this show, and I can’t begin to thank her team enough for the kindness they have shown me. I have been a Swiftie since I could remember and I will continue to be a Swiftie until I die.

Taylor Swift Reflects on ‘Most Magical’ Hometown Eras Tour Shows

By Tomás Mier

Taylor Swift is still riding cloud nine after spending the weekend performing in her hometown. On Tuesday, the singer shared some photos from her string of shows in Philadelphia as she reflected on performing during Mother’s Day weekend.

“Philly was a dream, honestly. Playing three nights in the stadium I used to see on tv when my dad watched Eagles games every Sunday,” she wrote. “The most magical 3 hometown shows a girl could hope for.”

On Sunday, the final of three consecutive shows in Philly, the singer performed Fearless ‘ “The Best Day,” which she wrote for her mom. “I got to emotionally hobble my way through singing The Best Day for my mom on Mother’s Day 😭😭🥰🥰🥰,” she added. “I love you all so much and am counting down the hours til Foxborough!”

On Night One, Swift played Evermore ‘s “Gold Rush” and Red ‘s “Come Back… Be Here” as her surprise songs and took the time to address a lyric about the Eagles in “Gold Rush.”

“I did see the debate about-I have a lyric that says, ‘With my Eagles T-shirt hanging from the door,'” Swift said, per CBS News . “I saw some people wondering if it was the band, the Eagles, or the team the Eagles. And I love the band the Eagles, but guys, come on. I’m from Philly. Of course, it’s the team.”

As for the other surprise songs on her Philly stop: during Night Two, she played “Forever and Always” and 1989 ‘s “This Love.” She did “The Best Day” and “Hey Stephen” for the final show, both from Fearless . Swift is next set to visit Massachusetts’ Gillette Stadium on May 19.

Taylor Swift ‘s trio of Eras Tour shows in Philadelphia couldn’t have been more nostalgic if she tried. In a Tuesday (May 16) post about her weekend spent at the city’s Lincoln Financial Field, the singer reflected on the full-circle feeling of performing at her hometown venue, celebrating Mother’s Day, family memories and more.

All the Surprise Songs Taylor Swift Has Performed on The Eras Tour (So Far)

Trending on billboard.

Then, two nights later, the “Anti-Hero” singer got to celebrate her mom, Andrea, with a sentimental surprise song performance of her 2008 Fearless track “The Best Day,” which she wrote as a teenager about their close bond. “Plus I got to emotionally hobble my way through singing The Best Day for my mom on Mother’s Day,” she added in her tweet. “I love you all so much.”

The 12-time Grammy winner had also confessed to feeling emotional about the performance while onstage Sunday night. She told the crowd about how she once surprised a tearful Andrea by secretly recording “The Best Day” all those years ago, and warned that, even a decade and a half later, she’d likely get choked up while performing it live.

Swift’s next stop on the Eras Tour will be Foxborough, Mass., about which she wrote she’s “counting down the hours” ’til she gets to play three consecutive shows at Gillette Stadium starting Friday (May 19). The week after, she’ll hit MetLife Stadium just outside New York City before heading over to Soldier Field in Chicago.

Pre-tour activity [ ]

Prior to the launch of the tour, Swift played three shows in the US, including a sold-out performance in front of nearly 71,000 fans at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in March 2009. Swift also played several dates in the UK and Australia, including two shows at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. [1]

Also, in the midst of her own tour, Swift began opening shows in select cities for Keith Urban on his Escape Together World Tour 2009.

About the tour [ ]

The tour was announced on January 29, 2009, via her official website. [2] The initial press release announced that Swift would visit 54 cities in 39 states and provinces in the United States and Canada. Joining her on the tour would be a new country music group, Gloriana, as well as former American Idol contestant, Kellie Pickler .

The tour kicked off in Evansville, Indiana, on April 23, 2009, at Roberts Stadium. In honor of the kickoff of the sold-out tour, Swift was presented the key to the city of Evansville and the City Council President declared Wednesday, April 23, 2009, Taylor Swift Day. [3]

The tour features a theatrical presentation of graphics, sets and visual elements all designed by Swift herself. The show runs more than 90 minutes and showcases Swift playing five different guitars as well as the piano. The show features multiple costume changes and a fairy-tale castle illuminated by more than a million lumens of light.

In late June, a new tour date was announced for November 23 at the Wembley Arena in London. However it has become apparent that neither Kellie Pickler nor Gloriana will be joining her on the UK part of the tour. Taylor Swift announced another date in the UK at the Manchester Evening News Arena on November 24. [4] This was the final and second tour date in the UK. The shows at Wembley and Manchester will be the only two concerts for the Fearless Tour in Europe. It was announced later that singer Justin Bieber would join Swift on the two UK dates [5] While performing at Wembley Arena, Bieber broke his foot while he performed the opening lines of "One Time", but still finished the song. Despite his injury, Bieber confirmed that he would still perform in Manchester with Swift the following day, although the Wembley concert was cut short as he could not perform the encore. Bieber then went on to perform at the Manchester performance with an encore, he sang 'With You' a cover of the original version from Chris Brown. Following a 10 minute applause after she had sung Tim McGraw, Swift told the Manchester audience 'Everytime I hear the word Manchester, I won't be able to stop smiling... I love you!'. [6] According to a German magazine, Swift was supposed to play three shows in Germany. However, tickets for those concerts never went on sale.

On September 30, it was announced that Swift would return to Australia in February 2010 to play another series of concerts, but now in arenas. [7] On October 8, it was announced that the tour would be extended through June 2, 2010, to include 37 additional shows in North America. [8] It has been confirmed that Justin Bieber will be performing at the Gillette Stadium on June 5, 2010, with Swift. [9]

All of the Surprise Songs Taylor Swift Performed This Weekend in Philadelphia, Pa.

Fans have been clamoring to guess and dream of what "surprise" songs Taylor Swift will slip into the setlist each night for the Eras Tour and in Philly fans were treated to a total of six magical songs.

Perhaps most notably? Several of the songs were personally requested by Taylor's A-list friends including Lena Dunham and Phoebe Bridgers.

As fans of Swift will tell you, there's a portion of the show where Taylor plays two "surprise songs" acoustically towards the end of her massive setlist. And for the hometown shows, there was a lot of energy around these tracks.

“Whether you are aware of it or not, you have walked into my hometown show,” Swift said as she introduced the massive 3-hour setlist which covered the superstar's 17-year career.

Swift, of course, grew up in Reading, PA, and her dad, Scott, is a large fan of the Eagles.

"You spend your whole childhood with your dad watching Eagles games on TV …” Taylor said when she spoke about the magnitude of playing at the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here's what happened over the weekend:

Friday, May 12 Taylor Swift Surprise Songs at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia, Pa.)

  • Gold Rush (from evermore )
  • Come Back... Be Here (from Red )

The first surprise song that Taylor performed answered a BURNING Philadelphia question in the introduction.

That song? Gold Rush. And Taylor FINALLY addressed the lyric "I see me padding across your wood floors, with my Eagles T-Shirt hanging from the door."

In the introduction to the song, Taylor said it's all about the E-A-G-L-E-S.

“I saw some people wondering if it was the band the Eagles or the team the Eagles,” the singer added. “And I love the band the Eagles, but guys, like, come on, I’m from Philly.”

Then Taylor said that Phoebe Bridgers, the opening act on the tour, requested the second surprise song for Friday night, which was Come Back...Be Here," from Taylor Swift's "Red" album.

“I take requests if they are polite and decently worded,” Swift said.

Saturday, May 13 Taylor Swift Surprise Songs at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia, Pa.)

  • "Forever & Always" (from Fearless)
  • "This Love" (from 1989)

Forever & Always (from Taylor Swift's Fearless album) was requested by Taylor's friend Lena Dunham. It was Dunham's birthday and she was in attendance for Saturday night's show.

"I have a request that I’m gonna do,” Taylor Swift said introducing the song. “My friend Lena, it’s her birthday today."

The second "surprise song" was "This Love:"

Sunday, May 14 Taylor Swift Surprise Songs at Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia, Pa.)

  • "Hey Stephen"

“I had a few really nice, fun people ask me to do this one,” Taylor said before introducing the song 'Hey Stephen.'

And, obviously, there was a LOT of speculation that Taylor would perform the song "The Best Day," which surely left many of the 70,000 in attendance in tears on Mother's Day since many mothers and daughters were in attendance.

What an incredible weekend for Taylor in Philly!

Taylor Swift’s Best Bridges, Ranked

A Taylor Swift song is nothing without its bridge. The star's strongest skills as a storyteller and lyricist are on full display in that critical moment, which marks a noticeable shift in the song, whether it’s in the narrative, tone, tempo, or a combination of the three. And for Swift, the bridge is often what elevates a good song to a truly great one . Over the course of her career, she’s introduced songs with bridges that run the emotional spectrum—some are meant to be screamed at the top of your lungs, while others can be quietly sung through tears.

With over 240 songs across 10 original studio and 4 re-recorded albums , Swift has a bridge for just about every type of emotional catharsis. We decided to go through her discography to decide on the very best. To determine what makes for a bridge of superior caliber, we each compiled our own individual rankings, taking into account how the bridge fits in with each song, and then we added up those results.

25. “Love Story”

“Love Story,” the lead single off 2008’s Fearless , put Swift in the mainstream. It shot to the top of different Billboard charts and solidified her status as a crossover artist . In the song, Swift invokes Romeo and Juliet to tell the story of a seemingly doomed young couple with the bridge bringing down the tempo to signify her growing apprehension—that is, until Romeo gets down on one knee and the fairytale ends happily.— Moises Mendez II

Best line: "My faith in you was fading, when I met you on the outskirts of town"

24. “right where you left me”

The “evermore” bonus track feels more like a Gothic short story than a song. It tells the story of a woman frozen in time, haunting the restaurant where she had her heart broken. In the bridge, Swift shares what the rumor mill is saying about the “woman who lives in delusion” before changing the pronouns to reveal she’s talking about herself. “Time went on for everybody else, she won't know it,” she sings, perfectly encapsulating the shame that comes from living in the past while everyone around you moves on.— Samantha Cooney

Best line: "She's still 23 inside her fantasy, how it was supposed to be"

23. “Mr. Perfectly Fine”

Every major pop star needs a f-ck you anthem dedicated to someone who has done them wrong. When “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” rumored to be about Joe Jonas, reaches the bridge, it sounds like Swift is kicking a door open to a new phase of her life without her Perfectly Fine man.— MM

Best line: "Now I'm Miss Gonna Be Alright Someday, and someday, maybe you'll miss me, but by then, you'll be Mr. Too Late"

22. “Back to December”

Closing a chapter with someone you care about deeply is one of the most heartbreaking things anyone can go through, and Swift expertly details that pain in “Back to December,” singing, “It turns out freedom ain't nothing but missin' you, wishin' I'd realized what I had when you were mine ”—some of the most tragic lyrics in her entire discography. The bridge only twists the knife even deeper as she sings about how she’d do everything differently if she were given a second chance.— MM

Best line: I'd go back in time and change it, but I can't. So, if the chain is on your door, I understand"

21. “You're On Your Own, Kid”

Though this Midnights track is carried by a fast and light beat, the heart of the song, about yearning for and experiencing fame, is quite devastating. The price of celebrity is summed up in the haunting lines of its bridge: “The jokes weren’t funny, I took the money. My friends from home don’t know what to say.”— Annabel Gutterman

Best line: "So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it. You’ve got no reason to be afraid"

20. “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve”

Even though it was a bonus track, “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” quickly became a standout (if not the best song) of Midnights . Feverish and wild, the song unravels like a thunderstorm, as Swift wades through a toxic relationship over pulsing drums and haunting synths. In the eye of the storm is the bridge—a pleading call to a higher power for rest, followed by an earth-shattering line that further cements Swift’s lyrical genius: “I regret you all the time.”— Rachel Sonis

Best line: "I regret you all the time"

19. "betty"

At the center of the Betty/James/Inez teenage love triangle drawn out in the folklore standout “betty” is the question: “What if?” What if James wasn’t such a boy about things? What if he told Betty how he really felt? What if Inez never spread those “rumors” about James cheating with her on Betty? But in the bridge, where Swift often makes her biggest revelations, the “what if’s” give way to the truth about James’ restless summer spent with Inez, when he was really thinking about Betty. A moment of unbearable release—and of stinging regret.— RS

Best line: "I dreamt of you all summer long"

18. "Enchanted"

This Speak Now song had a resurgence on TikTok last year, with the bridge appearing everywhere, bringing everyone back to 2010. In the bridge, Swift blissfully blends the confidence in her feelings of falling for someone with the insecurity of not knowing if that person is in love with someone else. She perfectly describes meeting someone for the first time and instantly feeling enchanted. That someone is said to be Adam Young, the frontman of Owl City. Swift said an interview around the time the album came out that she wrote the song about a guy she was emailing and when they met, he mentioned being “wonderstruck,” which she incorporated into the tune. In a 2011 interview with Us Weekly , Young said the song is about him and responded to it with a song of his own.— MM

Best line: "Please, don't be in love with someone else. Please, don't have somebody waiting on you"

17. “Out of the Woods”

1989 —Swift’s first full-on foray into pop music—is surprisingly sparse when it comes to soul-bearing bridges. (Case in point: “Style,” my all-time favorite Swift song, has a lyrically thin bridge). The one exception is “Out of the Woods,” with a bridge that serves as the song’s emotional and musical highpoint. Swift’s voice explodes as she describes a crash, and a snowmobile accident serves as a metaphor for the breakdown of a relationship. Despite the chaos and comedowns (“Remember when you said you couldn’t take the heat?”), the bridge ends with the hope that the relationship can make it, even if only for another day (“When the sun came up, you were looking at me.”)— SC

Best line: "Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? Twenty stitches in a hospital room"

16. “Treacherous”

This song from Red starts off soft and slow with lyrics that point to how easy it is to be consumed by the promise of love, even if that love is risky. The plucky chorus gives way to a powerful bridge that is most definitely meant to be screamed: “Two headlights shine through the sleepless night. And I will get you, get you alone.”— AG

Best line: "That nothing safe is worth the drive"

15. “You’re Losing Me”

“You’re Losing Me” was released as a vault song off Midnights just a month after it was reported Swift and her longtime boyfriend had split. While the bulk of the song is underwhelming, the bridge ranks among her best-ever, with some of her most emotionally raw songwriting. The lyrics balance righteous anger about not being given attention by a partner (“I’m the best thing at this party”) with anxious resignation about why it ended. It all builds up to the barnburner of a lyric: “And I wouldn’t marry me either.”— SC

Best line: "And I wouldn't marry me either. A pathological people pleaser. Who only wanted you to see her"

14. “Dress”

“Dress” is Swift’s most outwardly sexy song: the chorus is anchored around the line, “Only bought this dress so you could take it off.” But the bridge reveals the bluff: this is really a song about revealing the worst parts of yourself to someone and still having them want you. It’s all incredibly romantic and intimate.— SC

Best line: "Even in my worst lies you saw the truth in me"

13. "Long Live"

Originally written as a love letter to Swift’s band and fans, the lyrics in this Speak Now song remind us all that there is so much beauty in living in the present, and even more beauty in being able to look back and remember how that present felt. Though much of “Long Live” is a celebration of memories, the bridge coalesces into a striking direct plea from Swift to protect and honor how the past interacts with the future.— AG

Best line: "If you have children someday, when they point to the pictures, please, tell ‘em my name"

12. “champagne problems”

Swift tells the audience at the Eras Tour that she wrote one particular song during the pandemic with the hopes she’d one day hear fans scream its bridge in a stadium. That song is called “champagne problems”—and boy did I have fun screaming “what a shame she’s f-cked in the head” in Philadelphia last May. The song is a soft piano ballad about turning down a marriage proposal, and the bridge swells with scenes of devastation. The bridge’s bittersweet end promises the heartbroken ex will “find the real thing instead.” It’s a cathartic moment in the song—and at the show.— SC

Best line: "She would've made such a lovely bride. What a shame she's fucked in the head, they said"

11. “You Belong With Me”

“You Belong With Me” is the quintessential country-pop song of 2009. It’s the type of song that gets you out of your seat. It begs to be scream-sung at the top of your lungs with your best friends by your side, especially the bridge, which captures the yearning of wanting your crush to see that you’re perfect for him.— MM

Best line: "I know your favorite songs, and you tell me 'bout your dreams. Think I know where you belong, think I know it's with me"

10. “Death By A Thousand Cuts”

A Taylor Swift bridge ranking would not be complete without one that kind of feels like a rant—and “Death By a Thousand Cuts” is it. A song about an agonizing death of a relationship, what’s most interesting about this bridge is that it’s a stream of consciousness, with every line as cutting as the next, as Swift’s staccato delivery accentuates every dig. While her lover might’ve fired the first shot, Swift is here to deliver the final blow.— RS

Best Line: "Paper cut stings from our paper thin plans"

9. “illicit affairs”

Most of this folklore song is a slow and often unsettling dissection of the true cost of infidelity. But Swift’s crooning turns much louder as she cries out in the bridge how, exactly, this relationship has broken her apart (she literally references needing to scream). It’s these lyrics that really crystallize how confusing it is to love a person who never really belonged to you.— AG

Best line: "You showed me colors you know I can’t see with anyone else"

8. "Fifteen"

When Swift set to write the devastatingly vulnerable ballad “Fifteen,” she started with the bridge. “I started everything with the line ‘Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind’ and wrote everything else from that point, almost backwards,” Swift said of the song in her track-by-track explanation of the album on Big Machine Records’ website. That line makes not only the bridge, but the entire song—honest and searing, yet overflowing with sisterly love and empathy for her childhood best friend Abigail Anderson, as she goes through a brutal breakup.— RS

Best Line: "Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind. And we both cried"

7. "the last great american dynasty "

Of all the “mad” characters that exist in the folklore universe, Swift’s sharp retelling of American heiress and socialite Rebekah Harkness’ story and her notorious parties at the “Holiday House” mansion in Rhode Island takes the cake. Steeped in fascinating tidbits about her life, Swift recounts how Harkness, who inherited the riches from her oil tycoon husband’s untimely death and even became the richest woman in America at one point, was considered an outcast and a madwoman for her unconventional choices and lavish lifestyle. Swift, of course, is not-so-subtly making connections to her own life here—and really lays it bare in the bridge: Swift bought Holiday House (now called “High Watch”) in 2013, a place where many of her own dalliances have resulted in serious drama , too. A kiss-off to the haters, Swift is the new madwoman in town, and she doesn’t really care what anyone thinks. Rebekah would, no doubt, be proud.— RS

Best line: "Free of women with madness, their men in bad habits. And then it was bought by me"

6. "Last Kiss"

Talk about emotional catharsis! This Speak Now song describes a terrible, consuming breakup, and what it feels like to obsess over the final moments of a relationship. The steady beat swells up at the bridge and suddenly the full intensity of the track emerges as Swift’s voice explodes. The desperation and yearning is palpable—and so is the belief that one day those memories won’t feel so crushing.— AG

Best line: "So I’ll watch your life in pictures like I used to watch you sleep. And I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe"

5. "Getaway Car"

There’s a reason the behind-the-scenes video of Swift and Jack Antonoff writing the “Getaway Car” bridge has become Swiftie lore. It’s exhilarating to watch Swift and Antonoff compose a cinematic bridge with strong storytelling in real time. The song turns Swift into an outlaw running from the heart she broke. In the bridge, Swift takes some responsibility—but also tells her partner he shouldn’t be surprised she ditched him in a motel bar. Try not to have fun belting this (especially when Swift goes full Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan on “when I switch to the other si-i-i-i-ide).— SC

Best line: "It's no surprise I turned you in. 'Cause us traitors never win"

4. "Dear John"

The blueprint for Taylor Swift’s best bridge (more on that later) is all over this Speak Now song, one of Swift’s best breakup anthems, ever. As she unpacks a relationship with an older man (famously rumored to be John Mayer), Swift takes aim at how it feels to be taken advantage of by someone so manipulative and deceitful. In the bridge, Swift crucially reclaims the power she lost, directly calling out this toxic behavior, and rising above it. This is a moment of supreme clarity—impressive for anyone to capture so acutely, let alone from someone so young (Swift was just 21 when this album was released).— AG

Best line: "You are an expert at sorry and keeping lines blurry"

3. "august"

By the time “august” gets to the bridge, there’s an explosion of emotions. It’s the part of the song where, if you’re listening in the car, no matter who you're with, you turn the volume up to scream, “Back when we were still changing for the better!” The song sounds like a balmy summer day, capturing exactly how it feels to fall in love with someone who makes you feel warm inside, but ends up breaking your heart by slipping away.— MM

Best line: "So much for summer love and saying us, 'cause you weren't mine to lose"

2. “Cruel Summer”

Is there anything better than screaming the bridge “Cruel Summer” at the top of your lungs? Screaming the bridge while you have a new crush for the summer, maybe. “Cruel Summer” is definitely one of Swift’s sweatiest numbers—a song that is best played on a hot July day as the sun sets and the night has promise of meeting up with someone you’re “just texting,” but that no one knows about yet. The hushed secrets and that hurts-so-good feeling at the start of a relationship is what she’s getting at—that is, until she blurts out her biggest secret of all in the bridge: “I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard?” Truly, the Queen of Catharsis.— RS

Best line: "I scream, ‘For whatever it’s worth, I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard?’"

1. "All Too Well"

It should come as no surprise that Swift’s magnum opus contains her best bridge (and we’re not talking about the 10 minute version ). All Too Well is not so much a breakup song as it is an in-depth postmortem on a past relationship. In cutting specificities, Swift holds to the light the seemingly small, everyday moments that come from sharing a life with someone else, revealing how much love can be derived there. While much of the song focuses on these little flashes of memory (the scarf, the twin sized-bed, the refrigerator light), the bridge takes stock of the damage that’s been inflicted in the aftermath. It’s her best bridge because it’s so vulnerable. Her rage and confusion are crystal clear as she questions how everything came crashing down.— AG

Best line: "And you call me up again, just to break me like a promise. So casually cruel in the name of being honest"

When Taylor Swift captioned her tour rehearsal photo dump on Instagram with "In my Eras era," I felt that. We're all in our Eras era.

The already record-breaking Eras Tour is about to embark on its next batch of shows, and Taylor is continuing to surprise fans on stage every night, making each show as memorable as possible for those who've been waiting years to see her perform live. Why Travis Kelce thinks Taylor Swift falling for him is a glitch

Six months after taylor swift attended her first kansas city chiefs game, travis kelce shared the reason he’s surprised the “karma” singer wanted to date him., by olivia evans | e online • published april 10, 2024.

Even Travis Kelce is surprised by how his paralleled lines intertwined with Taylor Swift .

Six months after his relationship with the "Karma" singer became public, the guy on the Chiefs is still shocked at how favorably the dominoes cascaded in a line for him.

"I don't know how I did it because she wasn't into sports," he explained on the April 10 episode of " New Heights ." "So I don't know how the f--k I did it."

However, the episode's guest, Dave Burd , known by his rap name Lil Dicky , cheekily provided the answer, "Well, you did it because you called her out on your multimedia platform."

And Kelce conceded, "I know exactly how I did it."

Of course, Burd and Kelce were referring to the infamous July 2023 episode of " New Heights "—when Kelce playfully poked at Swift blowing him off during her Kansas City stop of the Eras Tour , where he had planned to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it.

Celebrities Attending Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour

"I was disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings," he said at the time. "So I was a little butt-hurt I didn't get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her."

While Swift didn't notice that Kelce showed up to her party, she evidently found the gesture fearless. In fact, she later said it was what lit the fuse on their relationship, describing the situation to TIME magazine as "metal as hell."

Fast forward to way more than 300 conversations about Swift and Kelce later, and the NFL tight end is still living his best life.

"It's fun," he added on the April 10 podcast episode. "I'm having a blast in life, baby. Just flying high. Enjoying it all. Bringing new lives to the football world. Opening the football world up to new things as well."

Dave also encapsulated the Swiftie point of view with his own comments on the relationship.

Kylie Kelce on Travis Kelce-Taylor Swift relationship: ‘If Trav is happy, we're happy'

"I think it's the best thing ever," he told Travis and his brother Jason Kelce . "Not that you want to spend time talking about it for the five-thousandth time, but I just think there's something that makes everyone feel like the world is kind of like high school. Where the most popular pop star, beloved musician somehow met your most popular beloved athlete and they actually fell in love."

As he put it, "Anyone who hates on it is a bitter loser—there's something classic about it."

Authenticity

Nostalgia to authenticity: taylor swift's existential shift, kierkegaardian "repetition" moves beyond reminiscence..

Updated April 12, 2024 | Reviewed by Monica Vilhauer

Source: Steve Jurvetson / Wikimedia Commons

Many of Taylor Swift's songs employ remembering , telling stories from past experience. Some of her music goes further, conjuring the Platonic notion of recollection , mining essential truth within the marrow of memories.

Yet Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard associated "recollection" with motionlessness, contrasting it with repetition , characterized by constant motion and passionate commitment towards an ethical future. Kierkegaard's "repetition" involves moving beyond recollection.

Kierkegaard was not actually promoting repeating anything but engaging in reflection which reinterprets past events in ways that imbue them with constructive meaning (ESB, 2024), a form of existential engagement that contributes to the formation of authenticity , in contrast to recollection, which is primarily aesthetic . Unlike recollection which is backward looking, this type of repetition is forward looking and tied to present action and future hope.

Remembering Yesterday

In popular music, recollection is ubiquitous.

Source: Matthew Hoobin / Wikimedia Commons

Take "Yesterday," written by Paul McCartney. The lyrics reflect on a past love and the longing for simpler times. " Why she had to go I don't know. She wouldn't say. I said something wrong. Now I long for yesterday ."

It's among the most popular songs of all time.

"Yesterday" mourns a loss, creating a musical shrine. McCartney isn't certain of the song's origins. He intended the words to be "girl lyrics" fictionalizing love lost, but recently wondered whether he had unconsciously penned memories of his mother, who died when he was fourteen (Muldoon, 2024), offering a poignant reframe. Either way, it is memory laced with sentiment and regret.

Repetition is more existential engagement than reminiscence .

Has Swift's Music Become More Courageous?

Source: Brian Cantoni / Wikimedia Commons

Early songs from Swift's 2006 self-titled debut album offer prime examples of a wistful outlook—"Tim McGraw," "Cold as You," and "Should've Said No." Then on her 2008 Fearless album, "Fearless," "Love Story," and "You Belong with Me" each persist in memorialization of past relationships or other experiences, often with a nostalgic tone, reminiscing about specific moments or feelings. Similarly, "Back to December" (album: Speak Now , 2010) expresses regret and longing.

Nostalgia and regret are powerful emotional experiences, yet fall short of contemplating one's place in the world, wresting meaning from loss, or embracing new life.

But then we encounter "Long Live" (album: Speak Now , 2010), a triumphant anthem celebrating shared experiences and overcoming obstacles. In addition to immortalizing late-night drives and friendships forged in fire, it’s a victory march against life’s struggles. Swift sings, "Long live all the mountains we moved, I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you." This recollection isn’t just looking back. It's an affirmation of life. Here Swift transforms memories into sources of strength, a subtle but important shift.

Source: makaiyla willis / Wikimedia Commons

Consider this melancholic acknowledgement of self-doubt in "All Too Well" (album: Red , 2012): " Time won't fly, it's like I'm paralyzed by it, I'd like to be my old self again, but I'm still trying to find it. " Here, even in the wreckage of memories, Swift elicits strength.

In “Out of the Woods" (album: 1989 , 2014), Swift’s protagonist sprints through a metaphorical forest, heart pounding, seeking escape, evoking themes of introspection and facing struggles. Trees whisper secrets—tangled relationships, doubts, fears. The frantic pace and vivid imagery capture a sense of urgency. The song portrays a character bravely confronting inner demons and seeking to emerge from a tumultuous emotional landscape, a journey towards greater self-understanding, growth, and ultimately finding a way.

Source: makaiyla willis / Wikimedia Commons

“New Year’s Day” (album: Reputation , 2017) unfolds with Swift’s piano inviting reflection. Kierkegaard believed repetition empowers us to be fully present and courageously forward looking. Here, as a year turns, we find solace in ordinary magic and anticipation. The song isn’t about grand fireworks; it’s about the quiet spark—shared moments. Rather than a mere backward glance, it’s seeing life’s confetti as both aftermath and promise.

Swift’s vulnerability blooms in her introspective track, "The Archer" (album: Lover , 2019). The archer aims at her own heart, dissecting patterns. Kierkegaard’s “sickness unto death” resonates. The bridge—“ All the king’s horses, all the king’s men ”—weaves fractured fairy tales and evokes emotional wounds. But Swift isn’t waiting for rescue; she’s stitching herself.

Transformative Dialogue With Ourselves

Swift extracts self-assurance through emotional poetry—" And you can aim for my heart, go for blood, but you would still miss me in your bones " (Swift, "My Tears Ricochet," album: Folklore , 2020). Even so, songs drenched in recounting lose space for deeper, more consequential reflection.

taylor swift fearless tour philadelphia

Earlier albums like Fearless (2008) presented a more essentialist view of love and relationships, while Evermore (2020), for example, evokes existential feelings and themes, prompting listeners to turn the lens inward and contemplate deeper life questions and emotions.

Ronald Woan / Wikimedia Commons

"Anti-Hero" (album: Midnights , 2022) delves into complexities of self-image and the struggle to reconcile one's perceived flaws with a desire for authenticity—" It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me ." Grappling with questions of identity, purpose, and the human condition, Swift invites listeners to engage in a transformative dialogue with themselves.

Some of Swift's recent work bears a striking resemblance to Kierkegaard's method of indirect communication, incorporating ambiguity, paradox, and persona, forcing listeners to actively uncover meaning for themselves. There is a deep personal and emotional resonance in her art for so many, so they wait with bated breath to hear what comes next from The Tortured Poets Department .

Kierkegaard (1843b) journaled, "It is really true what philosophy tells us, that life must be understood backwards. But with this, one forgets the second proposition, that it must be lived forwards."

Taylor Swift’s History With London Explained: From Her British Boyfriends to Songs About the U.K.

Taylor Swift’s History With London Explained: From Her British Boyfriends to Songs About the U.K.

Taylor Swift first touched down in Londontown in 2008 and more than a decade later she is saying “So Long, London” on her 2024 album, The Tortured Poets Department .

Swift caused a stir in February 2024 when she announced the TTPD setlist , including “So Long, London,” which is rumored to be about her split from English actor Joe Alwyn .

While the Grammy winner famously detailed her romance with Alwyn in Lover ‘s “London Boy,” her connection to the city dates back to 2008 when she played her first gig across the pond.

“Now it’s raining, which I’m told happens a lot here,” Swift playfully revealed in a November 2008 vlog about her trip to London that September. “They say brilliant and lovely a lot, which is both brilliant and lovely.”
