The tour starts off early in the morning with a hotel pickup, so make sure you bring a jacket and some comfortable walking shoes as you’re going to see quite a lot!

The private transportation was comfortable, with air-conditioning and large windows to admire the natural and man-made beauty all around the city. Another factor I thought was well worth the money was the fact that it’s a completely-customizable private tour so we were able to pick and choose what we wanted to see.

Of course, if you aren’t familiar with the city you can tell your guide your interests and they can create an itinerary based around them to make it particularly interesting!

We of course got to see the exterior of the Sydney Opera House, taking photos and videos while learning all about its history from our guide (you can also opt to take an interior tour). Next up was Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair for a breathtaking view of the harbour while learning about the stone chair!

Next up, we saw the beautiful St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Royal Botanical Gardens, along with the contrasting “sketchy” Kings Cross which was once the Red Light District of Sydney!

You better believe there are some crazy stories about this place! After that, we headed up to the magnificent Watson’s Bay, which is one of the deepest and biggest harbours in the world, before heading to the world-famous Bondi Beach to stroll and take a dip in the water!

The  Opera Performance at the Sydney Opera House tour offers both matinee and evening performances, which make it that much easier to fit into a packed itinerary, too! I’ll be upfront and say that you can also obviously just book the show that you want to see, individually.

However, this tour is a bit more comprehensive, and I felt like we had some opportunities with this tour that we wouldn’t have had we solely booked the tour. For example, it seemed like we had better seating and were just taken into consideration more by staff as we cruised around the interior of this legendary building.

I’d never seen an opera before, so I didn’t know what to expect, but the staff helped explain the history to me and offered specific insight into the opera we were about to attend.

The vast majority are performed in Italian, though they conveniently have the English subtitles projected right about the stage for easy viewing. We went to a bar inside the opera house first, so we could enjoy a tasty cocktail before going inside.

The performances do vary on the season, so if you do have any questions about the shows, don’t hesitate to reach out to the staff with any questions you may have. I recommend La Bohéme and Otello, but I’ve heard that all of them are great!

If you’d like an authentic opera experience at one of the best venues in the world, do give this one a good look!

I had no idea so much work went into a single performance, with countless employees working seamlessly to make sure everything goes as planned.

After learning so much about the history of the beautiful Opera House, we all went over to a beautiful restaurant where we sat on the patio to enjoy the ships pass by under the harbour bridge as we enjoyed some delicious food and drink.

The 2-course dinner and 2 different drinks were divine, and as previously mentioned, made for a nice little date night activity. I can’t recommend this evening tour enough – especially if you’re looking to go out with your significant other or a group of friends.

The Sydney Opera House Tour & Meal + Drink at Opera Bar or House Canteen  is my most recommended tour for the entire family – even if you’re traveling with young children or teenagers who have short attention spans!

If you don’t mind a bit of exercise, put on your walking shoes and sign up for one of the most in-demand excursions in Sydney!

This is also one of the most brief tours, combined with plenty of different start times available to make it one of the easiest to fit into a busy itinerary.

The tour starts by meeting up with your guide and the rest of your small group at the Opera House, who offers a fun little briefing before heading inside. The digital experience was also pretty cool and taught me a lot about the history of the building, along with some relevant info about Australia’s origins.

The area surrounding the Opera House was surprisingly beautiful, making for some great photo ops to print out later on as a nice memento.

Our tour guide perfectly balanced knowledge with humor, keeping all of us at the edge of our seats waiting for what was to come next.

Learning about the architecture and unique design required to pull this building off was fascinating, along with the mass amounts of people needed to make it happen!

After learning and exploring, we headed over to a lovely restaurant at one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Sydney! You do get to choose from the Opera Bar or the House Canteen, though I love the latter for its amazing views and general “beachy” kind of vibe.

The food was incredible, and they also included an alcoholic beverage to sip on while soaking in the expansive scenery surrounding us.

I often get asked, “Should I book a Opera House Tour or just walk around the outside”? My standard answer is, “Well, that depends.” So let’s go find out what “that depends” on!

Travelling on a tight budget

Interested in the opera house’s history and architecture, interested in seeing a theatre performance, someone who loves to see how the place works – backstage tours, opera house tours for someone who loves good food, don’t forget the gift shop.

Ways to see the Sydney Opera House

Whether you should do an Opera House tour depends on your interest in architecture, performing arts, your budget and the time you have available for your visit. So let’s explore the varioius options and find out the best way for you to see Sydney’s iconic white sails.

If you are flat broke, you can still walk around the Opera House – head inside via the Drama Theatre staircase and even use the toilets.

Make sure you walk around the building and take photos from different angles, climb the front stairs and touch the tiles .

Well, the next option is probably going to suit you. The Architectural Essentials Tour is a one-hour tour covering all the main public spaces and gives you the history of the building, the design, and the architect. You can take photos of any areas that are not dressed for performances. I recently did this tour – for the 5 th time –and the new to me video segments that cover the construction are a great addition.

Each guide seems to tell slightly different stories; ours shared a story of Pavarotti refusing to attend a reception in the Concert Hall foyer area because of his phobia of purple carpet. 

She also told us about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s visit to compete in a Mr Universe competition on the Concert Hall stage in the 1970s.

I have enjoyed my tours, and all the guides have been excellent, but apparently, this is not always the case and like anywhere you visit, the tour is only as good as the person giving it. I would think the majority are doing an excellent job.

Opera singer Pavarotti has a phobia of purple and would not attend an event in this foyer unless they covered the carpet. They did!

Some areas included in the Essentials tour are the Drama Theatre, Concert Hall, Utzon Room, and the Northern Foyer, although this may vary on the timing of your visit. If any areas are being dressed for performances or are being used for private functions, you will bypass them. To give you an idea of how often this happens is impossible, however, on my five tours I have only missed the concert hall once. I have also always been allowed to take photos. 

Book your Opera House tour now – you can cancel up to 24 hours it starts if needed.

An alternative to taking the tour and next best budget-wise is to attend a performance. There are over 40 shows a week, and a quick check of this month’s tickets discovered the Bangarra Dance Theatre performing in the Drama Theatre.

If you want to see the Concert Hall, and it is very impressive, I suggest a symphony concert. Opera Australia packages are also available, and you can even include dinner with your show if you like.

If no headline shows are running during your visit these regular Opera performances are great.

I have not done one of these tours, so I sadly have no photos to share, but if you are a performer yourself or a passionate arts fan, the backstage tour   will probably appeal to you. Run daily at 7am; only twelve people can join each tour, allowing you to get up close to the action.

You need to book in advance for these and bookings close two days before. This two-hour tour visits the stages and orchestra pits, dressing rooms and breakfast in the green room on the conclusion. Tours are available in several languages, including tours for the hearing impaired.

A backstage tour is a very special experience

You can, of course, skip the tour altogether and spend the money eating and drinking instead. On our last wedding anniversary, my husband surprised me with dinner at the Opera House fine dining restaurant Bennelong.

We opted for the pre-theatre menu, which is excellent value; with the right seating, you get to watch the sunset while eating dinner inside one of the shells. They also do a mean Negroni. Bookings are essential here, often a few weeks in advance, but they take walk-ins for the bar menu. I am not much of a food reviewer, so check out this blog post for more.

There are also a few outdoor dining options – perfect spots to watch the sunset.

Australian singer-songwriter Missy Higgins’ current tour is a celebration of her debut album, The Sound of White – but it was her newest, yet to be released material that really resonated at Sydney’s ICC Theatre on Saturday night.

Higgins divides her show into two sections, with the post-intermission act serving as a faithful run through her debut album, a 12 x platinum smash that was released 20 years ago this year.

But, earlier, fans were also treated to half a dozen selections from her upcoming sixth studio album, The Second Act , which Higgins explained deals with the breakdown of her marriage to the father to her two children, comedian and playwright Dan Lee.

Higgins spoke in sometimes devastating detail about the break-up to the sell-out ICC crowd, confessing that she “hates” being a single mother and has struggled to process the end of a marriage she assumed would be for life.

And in a preamble before one of the most bruising songs from her new record, Blue Velvet Dress, she even revealed the very night the relationship came to an end: New Year’s Eve, 2021.

Higgins was booked to perform at the Sydney Opera House forecourt as part of the ABC’s live New Year’s Eve coverage. As she told the crowd, it was backstage in her dressing room that she realised her marriage was over for good.

The timing couldn’t have been worse, as she then had to put on the song’s titular blue velvet dress, strap on a guitar and play her hits for a live TV audience of millions. Higgins said it had been a night of extremes, as she publicly marked the start of a new year while privately grappling with the realisation her marriage was over.

In a statement on her website about the upcoming album, Higgins revealed that she views it as a sequel of sorts to The Sound of White.

“I wrote all those songs on the first album when I was in my late teens when I never thought anyone would hear them, so they were very personal, like I was writing my secrets in a diary”, she explained.

“I did less of that on later albums for lots of reasons but lately I realised I’d gone back to that confessional mode of songwriting. I guess it’s been my way of dealing with the end of my marriage. So, I feel like I’ve come full circle … I was starting life from scratch at 20 and now, like lots of people, I’m figuring out how to start life all over again at 40.”

Higgins initially announced her separation from her longtime partner on social media six months after the fact.

“Six months ago Dan and I separated,” she wrote on Instagram in mid-2022.

Glass Animals Expand 2024 Australian Tour With New Sydney Show

Glass Animals ‘ 2024 Australian tour in honour of their fourth studio album,  I Love You So F***ing Much , just got bigger, with the addition of a second show in Sydney.

The Hottest 100-topping, Grammy-nominated, Platinum-selling British act will now play a second show at the iconic Sydney Opera House Forecourt. The freshly added date will take place on Wednesday, 27th November, with tickets on sale now.

Glass Animals – A Tear In Space

Glass Animals will also hit two other East Coast venues when they return down under this November, visiting Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Brisbane’s Riverstage.

“Australia. We love you so f***ing much,” frontman Dave Bayley said in a press statement. “When we first came to tour over there, we only had like four songs. So we played them twice. And you forgave us. And then you gave us our first ever hottest 100 success with ‘Gooey’. And then you embraced ‘Heat Waves’ so hard I tattooed the shape of Australia on my arse cheek.”

He continued: “It is my only tattoo. I forget it’s there sometimes and it startles me when I get out of my bubble bath. But it makes me v happy. And I feel the same announcing this new Australian tour. The same happiness I feel when looking at my arse in the mirror. See you soon.”

I Love You So F***ing Much  is the follow-up to Glass Animals’ 2020 LP  Dreamland , which sold over 12 million copies globally and gave life to ‘Heat Waves’, which was voted #1 in the triple j Hottest 100 and is now x19 Platinum ARIA-accredited.

Bridge the gap

Sydney’s second major landmark, the Harbour Bridge, unites the CBD (central business district) with the North Shore suburbs. For those with a head for heights (and the best part of £150 to spare), Bridge Climb is the classic experience. Alternatively, take the train to North Sydney and walk back over the bridge for free, with the opera house and city skyline before you.

Sydneysider culture goes big on the beach. Bondi is the icon, for its fine sand, surfer scene, and Icebergs saltwater pool, or hop on the ferry to Manly and its similarly sandy, pine-tree-lined promenade. Not a fan of waves? Stay within the harbour: the North Shore’s Fairlight Beach or more hidden-away Castle Rock Beach are fantastic.

Go walkabout

All around the harbour, fragments of foreshore and bushland constitute Sydney Harbour National Park . Weaving much of it together is the 80km Bondi to Manly Walk , via woodland, beaches, parks and urban promenades. En route, enjoy Aboriginal rock carvings, wildlife encounters (kookaburras, bush turkeys, water dragons) and cooling dips. Ferry and bus connections break it into manageable chunks.

Art and culture

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is lauded for its sculptures, exhibitions and collections, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks. For a fun, yesteryear resort vibe, Oxford House in nearby Paddington wins for its laidback style, cheerful service, and poolside restaurant that doubles as a popular brunch spot for locals. For more in the way of budget stays, Space Q Capsule Hotel delivers conveniently located, quirky, cool and cost-effective digs within a five-minute walk of Central station.

Where to eat

Asian flavours abound in Sydney. Ever-popular Chin Chin in Surry Hills is the go-to for beef rendang, crispy duck pancakes and prawn summer rolls, all bursting with freshness (mains from £12-20). Similarly upbeat is Uncle Mings : a quirky dumpling den serving small bites and cocktails on a CBD laneway. For something simpler, Japanese temaki are a commonplace, cheap (around £2 each) and healthy on-the-go snack; Hero Sushi is a good place to find them. Also refreshingly affordable is Spice Alley : a Chippendale backstreet whose hawker-style outlets span Singaporean, Thai, Malaysian, Cantonese and Japanese favourites, from satay skewers to special fried rice.

This being a coastal city, there’s no shortage of waterfront restaurants. The Boathouse on Manly’s Shelly Beach wins for its indoor/outdoor ambience, great design, and High Tide Happy Hour (alternatively, try the Balmoral Beach branch). At Bondi Pavilion, meanwhile, a much-needed renovation to mark its centenary has given this seafront landmark a buzzing brunch spot in Glory Days , with poke bowls, avo-on-toast breakfasts, and great coffee as the standouts.

Casually upmarket Café Sydney is perfect for special occasions. Situated atop Circular Quay’s historic Customs House, this classic spot enjoys foreground-filling Harbour Bridge views and a menu celebrating Aussie produce from barramundi to Sydney rock oysters, supported by thoughtful cocktail and wine lists.

Where to drink

Get a hint of its history at The Treasury , where coffee and cocktails are sipped in what was the courtyard of an 1851 building. Now enclosed to form a light-filled atrium, it’s a chic space with monochrome floor tiles, velvet booths, and an Art-Deco-style bar that complements the grand brick-and-sandstone architecture.

Elsewhere in the CBD, enjoy elevated views from Dean and Nancy on 22 , where inventively quirky cocktails (brought to life with candy floss or smoke-filled bubbles) come with a side of highrise scenery. Try the gin-based Alien on Holiday or colourful Watermelon Sugar High, all priced at around £14.

Rather more hidden away are the bijou bars on the YCK Laneways , a lively precinct around York, Clarence and Kent Streets. Highlights include Sammy Junior , which segues from daytime coffees to evening cocktails, or speakeasy-style Stitch Bar , which you’ll find behind a faux frontage.

Where to shop

Of the CBD’s major shopping malls, QVB stands out for its beautifully restored Victorian architecture (all tiled floors, balustrades and glass domes) packed with mostly international brands. Over in Chippendale, Central Park is a much more modern affair good for youth-oriented fashion and footwear from the likes of Glue Store and Hype DC, plus Pigeonhole and its range of gifts and clothing with a sustainable slant.

Also worth checking out are the boutiques in Paddington along Oxford Street, or continue down it all the way to Bondi Beach, which has evolved from its “daggier” backpacker days into something much more credible. Gould Street and Hall Street are the go-to spots here; check out Tuchuzy for its Aussie and international fashions.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Herbie Hancock Announces 2024 Australia And New Zealand Tour

The jazz icon is set to tour in October.

Trailblazer Herbie Hancock today (July 8) announced he will be touring around Australia and New Zealand this October.

The jazz icon will kick off his tour on October 8 at Auckland’s Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre. He’ll then hit up Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre on October 9, before flying Down Under.

He’ll play two shows at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on October 11 and 12, followed by Canberra Theatre on October 14 and QPAC Concert Hall in Brisbane on October 17. With a starring role at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival – performing at Sidney Myer Music Bowl on October 19 – Hancock will then hit up Adelaide’s Festival Theatre on October 20, and conclude his tour at Perth Concert Hall on October 22.

The Sydney Opera House Insiders pre-sale opens at 9am tomorrow, July 9, while the general sale for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival opens at 1pm tomorrow.

The Live Nation pre-sale for the rest of the shows opens at 9am local time the next day, July 10, and the general sale opens 24 hours later, at 9am on July 11.

Hancock, with a career spanning seven decades, has been a force to be reckoned with, garnering a whopping 14 Grammy awards and putting out classic hits like Cantaloupe Island , Chameleon and Rockit .

Hancock himself divided his time between his various instruments, pacing himself before going deep on a solo, notes near flying off the keys in a blur of fingers, whether it was light, dancing runs or heavy, slamming chordal accents. Our foyers will be open 90 minutes pre-show for Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and two hours pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances. Refreshments will be available for purchase from our theatre bars. All Sydney Opera House foyers are pram accessible, with lifts to the main and western foyers. The public lift to all foyers is accessible from the corridor near the escalators on the Lower Concourse and also in the Western Foyer via the corridor on the Ground Level (at the top of the escalators). Pram parking will be available outside the theatres in the Western Foyer.

The Sydney Opera House Car Park, operated by Wilson Parking, is open and available to use. Wilson Parking offer discounted parking if you book ahead. Please see  the Wilson Parking website  for details.

Please check the  Transport NSW website  for the latest advice and information on travel. You can catch public transport (bus, train, ferry) to Circular Quay and enjoy a six min walk to the Opera House. 

The health and wellbeing of everyone attending the Opera House is our top priority. We’re committed to making your experience safe, comfortable and enjoyable, with a number of measures in place including regular cleaning of high-touch areas, air conditioning systems that maximise ventilation, and hand sanitiser stations positioned in all paths of travel. We remind our audiences and visitors to please stay home if you feel unwell. If you need to discuss your ticketing or booking options, contact our Box Office team on 02 9250 7777.

The health and wellbeing of everyone attending the Opera House is our top priority. We have a number of safety measures in place including regular cleaning of high-touch areas, air conditioning systems that maximise ventilation, and hand sanitiser stations positioned in all paths of travel. While face masks are no longer required, we ask all our patrons and visitors to practise good hygiene. Please stay home if you feel unwell and read more about our flexible ticket options .

The Sydney Opera House no longer requires patrons to show that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Ticket purchases and collection at our Box Office is discouraged and eTicket or postal delivery methods should be used, wherever possible. However, if you are collecting your tickets from the Box Office, we recommend doing this at least 60 minutes before the event starts. If you have already received your tickets, the venue doors will be open 45 minutes pre-show for Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and 30 minutes pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances. Please take your seats as soon as you arrive. 

If you are late, we will seat you as soon as we can and, where possible, in your allocated seat. However, to reduce movement in the venue as well as minimise disruption to the performance and other patrons, ticketholders may be seated in an allocated latecomer’s seat. Please be aware that some events have lock-out periods. In these cases, latecomers will be admitted at a suitable break in the performance. On occasions, this may not be until the interval, or at all where there is no interval.

In accordance with our venue security procedures, Opera House security will be scanning and checking bags under the Monumental Stairs, prior to entering the building. Bags will be scanned by an x-ray machine, and staff will wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling your belongings, such as gloves. Cloaking facilities will be open 60 minutes pre-show for Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and 60 minutes pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances. However it is strongly encouraged that you travel lightly to minimise contact and queuing. Any bags larger than an A4 piece of paper will need to be checked into the Cloak Room.

Only tickets purchased by authorised agencies should be considered reliable. If you purchase tickets from a non-authorised agency such as Ticketmaster Resale, Viagogo, Ticketbis, eBay, Gumtree, Tickets Australia or any other unauthorised seller, you risk that these tickets are fake, void or have previously been cancelled. The venue doors will be open 45 minutes pre-show for Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and 30 minutes pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances.

Please bring a credit or debit card for any on site purchases to enable contactless payment. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle but no other food and drinks are permitted inside our venues. Opera Bar, Opera Kitchen and Portside are also available for you to enjoy.
