Small change in Sol 2.5 controller to use for challenges

Please note, that update is all about the new Content Manger and CSP preview from Ilja's Patreon page. If you don't use this, you don't need to update Sol ! Hello, With the new Content Manager (0.8.25) and CSP preview (0.1.80p218) the selection of the now called weather style is changed: You don't need to select a weather controller in weatherFX settings. You select the weather in the Drive menu, via the new Sol 2.5 submenu: You can now have more options in that menu, like special random categories and a preselection of wetness and puddles states. More things will come in that menu later... I added a static controller to the controller selection. So you can still use real conditions with Sol Planner app. If you drive challenges , please use the dynamic Sol 2.5 controller and set the start weather to " Predefined ". It will use then the weather from the event, but you can still select your own wetness and puddles.

Fewer Brits and more Dutch and Belgians are visiting the Costa del Sol this year

Some of the biggest issuing markets have moved down the list while others have climbed substantially.

Hotel receptions on the Costa del Sol have been reporting a general increase in the number of Dutch and Belgian visitors this summer and a notable drop in the number of guests from the UK and Germany.

This is unusual because for decades the principal source markets for the Costa del Sol had remained unchanged: the UK, Germany and France were the biggest markets, especially in some years when French travellers decided that the Costa del Sol was a more fashionable destination and came to this area instead of their traditional favourite place for holidays, which is the coast of Catalonia.

Apart from those few occasions when the French changed their allegiance from Catalonia, businesses and entities involved in promoting the destination knew exactly where they should focus their attention to ensure that British and German visitors came year after year.

Now, however, in what can be described as the post-pandemic era, something is different. A report on tourism in general on the Costa del Sol shows that these significant changes have occurred, and they indicate that the sector will also have to do things differently if it is to continue to attract travellers to the destination in the same numbers as before.

In other words, these changes open up new opportunities and mark the start of a long-awaited stage of relieving the dependence on major source markets such as the United Kingdom. The data can be taken as a guideline for the future.

Fewer tourists than before

The study, which was carried out by the Costa del Sol Tourist Board and based on data from the National Institute of Statistics on the movement of travellers in hotels and apartments during the first six months of this year, shows that the UK still heads the list of international visitors, even though the figure was down by 18 per cent in the first half of this year, compared with the same period in 2019.

The big surprise is that the second place is now held by the Netherlands, which has beaten Germany, a market in clear decline which has been relegated to fourth place and with figures similar to those of the fifth source market, Ireland.

The report says bookings by Dutch visitors in hotels and apartments in the province rose by 23.7 per cent in the first six months of 2022, also overtaking those by tourists from France.

In this new configuration Belgium also stands out, as it is now the sixth biggest source of international clients for hotels and apartments on the Costa del Sol, whereas before the pandemic began it was ninth on the list, a position now held by the USA.

The increase in the number of arrivals from Belgium has also displaced another strong market, Italy. In fact, only the Netherlands, Belgium and Portugal have shown an increase in the number of visitors above those who came in the first six months of 2019, and in the case of Portugal, there was a rise of nearly 40 per cent in the first half of this year. The other markets still have a long way to go to get back to where they were before the coronavirus crisis.

UK market badly affected

In this sense, of trying to return to pre-pandemic figures, the market which is suffering the most due to the imposition of strict quarantines, is the biggest source market for the Costa del Sol, the United Kingdom. This country accounts for 30 per cent of the business in hotels and the number of arrivals at Malaga airport.

The figures from the Costa del Sol Tourist Board reflect the concern among businesses about the need to recover British tourism as a sign that normality is returning.

In the first half of this year, hotels and apartments have lost 115,213 British visitors, which is a drop of about 18.2 per cent compared with pre-pandemic levels. The figure is even greater if you look at the airport statistics, as the number of visitors from the UK was down by almost 23 per cent between January and June this year, compared with the same period in 2019. This means that 309,935 fewer visitors flew to Malaga from Britain than in the first six months of 2019, when the number of arrivals reached one million.

A recession in Germany

If this situation seems worrying, the one regarding Germany is even more so, and in addition this country has already said it is in an economic recession.

The figures for the first six months show that the number of visitors from Germany arriving at the airport dropped by 27 per cent compared with the same period in 2019, with 105,011 fewer arrivals.

The situation regarding French arrivals is similar, down by 18 per cent and more than 50,000 passengers.

New strategy

In view of the fact that the source markets which have traditionally led international tourism are still struggling with the impact of the pandemic, businesses and entities such as the Costa del Sol Tourist Board are planning new strategies.

They are also actively trying to attract tourists back from other markets such as Scandinavia, where the data shows that the pandemic has also had a major impact and the figures are below those of previous years.

In this respect, Miguel Sánchez, who until very recently headed the Tourism Council of the Andalusian Confederation of Business Owners (CEA), has called for action to be taken to improve connectivity with the Scandinavian countries.

"We must focus on these markets because they are essential and they were pioneers on the Costa del Sol. There is a tremendous potential there and we are not taking advantage of it," he said.

The top international markets for Costa del Sol hotels and apartments in the first half of this year have therefore been the UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Italy, USA, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Poland, Portugal and Finland, all of them preceded by the domestic Spanish market.

Promotional campaigns

Faced with this change of scenario, the Tourist Board has also begun a special promotional campaign to attract tourists between now and the end of the year, and is taking advantage of major events in strategic markets to reverse this situation.

In addition to the problems caused by the pandemic, experts are warning that with inflation so high and the war in Ukraine, many countries are going to find themselves in recession.

With Big Data as a useful tool to guide the Costa as to where to act, at what time and how to do so, the Costa del Sol Tourist Board has planned a series of actions. These range from participation in the most important tourism fairs, not only in Europe but also in the USA, to organising professional and specific conferences to boost segments which are still heavily impacted by the pandemic, such as congress and business tourism.

They have also increased the number of familiarisation trips for travel agents and journalists, to enable them to get to know the destination better and at first hand.

‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Is the Best Version of Conan

The comedian’s new travel show proves he’s at his best away from the rigid confines of late night

After hundreds of episodes of Hot Ones , there’s little a guest can do to shake up the reliable formula of thoughtful questions combined with increasingly spicy chicken wings. But Conan O’Brien isn’t just any guest. Conan is someone who arrives with “Dr. Arroyo,” his personal physician, who, when asked where he went to medical school, answers “1998”; he deposits the remains of each wing into his jacket pocket; seemingly unfazed by the heat, he chugs hot sauces like they’re in tiny liquor bottles from a hotel minibar; he rubs the drumsticks on his hands, mouth, and, yes, nipples. Even as Conan’s pale complexion begins to resemble a ripe tomato, he remains committed to the bit, raising his body temperature by two degrees in a state of delirium. (According to Dr. Arroyo, of course.) Behold, the comedy GOAT:

Aside from being one of the funniest people on the planet, Conan seems to operate at the peak of his powers when surrounded by chaos. He was, for a time, our longest-tenured late-night host: He had a career on the airwaves that spanned nearly three decades, not unlike his icon, Johnny Carson. But while Conan could do the usual late-night beats in his sleep—the opening monologue, the celebrity interviews—he was never better than when things went completely off the rails. Consider: Conan used his last week as the short-lived host of The Tonight Show to waste NBC’s money on bringing a Kentucky Derby–winning horse to set; trolled his interns and staff in remote segments; introduced the world to his associate producer Jordan Schlansky, who gamely played a pretentious foil ; found an actual Tinder date with Dave Franco.

But some of Conan’s best work has been when he’s left the rigid confines of late night altogether. In 2015 Conan began a spinoff travel series, Conan Without Borders , in which he explored other countries armed with little more than his self-deprecating wit. “[Travel shows are] completely outside the realm of anything I do,” he explained to The New York Times in 2019. “They can be frightening because they take away a lot of control. I’m out there, I don’t often know what I’m going to encounter.” More often than not, it’s led to comedy gold. For instance, while he was taking a Japanese etiquette lesson, Conan’s instructor said that he wasn’t her type. The reason: “Face.”

Face . You could never script something so casually brutal; therein lies the magic. Most important, Conan never mocks other cultures to induce laughs—instead, he makes himself the butt of the joke, leaning into the bit of an ignorant tourist. But what truly elevated Conan Without Borders was how he could deftly weave in educational components and approach dark periods of a country’s history with genuine sensitivity. (Conan’s visit to the Armenian Genocide Memorial with his longtime assistant, Sona Movsesian, is among the most emotionally resonant moments of his career.) Thankfully, even though Conan has bowed out of the late-night scene, he’s doubling down on the travelogues.

On Thursday—Conan’s birthday, no less—Max released Conan O’Brien Must Go , a four-part series that takes him to Norway, Argentina, Thailand, and Ireland. These destinations were inspired by his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend , which, in addition to celebrity interviews, features conversations with fans from around the globe. (The fans frequently invite Conan to come visit their neck of the woods; few would ever imagine he’d take them up on the offer.) While Conan O’Brien Must Go doesn’t rely on celebrity cameos, every episode opens with Werner Herzog voice-over narration about the grandeur of Mother Earth and how, to fully appreciate its natural wonders, we must sometimes “defile it.” Rest assured, Conan the Defiler is more than up to the task.

What separates Conan O’Brien Must Go from his first travel show is the incorporation of those fans, including a Norwegian fish farmer, an Irish medical student, and an Argentine painter. The fans understandably react to Conan showing up at their front door with a mixture of shock and glee, but before they even get a chance to compose themselves, he playfully roasts their respective living situations. Nobody gets it worse than Jarle, a young Norwegian rapper who still sleeps with soccer-themed bedsheets from childhood and has bread so stale it lands with an audible thud when Conan drops it. “I’ll wipe the floor with you,” Conan tells Jarle, “which actually might be a good idea, because I think you’d pick up a lot of lint.”

But while it’s enjoyable in its own right to see Conan surprise fans, Conan O’Brien Must Go is never better than when he throws all caution to the wind mingling with the locals. One standout bit in Argentina involves a soccer team that invites Conan to its stadium, where he proceeds to take the sport’s reputation for theatrical diving to another level, with fake blood spurting out of his mouth. Argentina is also where Conan reunites with his archnemesis, Schlansky, who repeatedly corrects him on the proper pronunciation of tango over dinner. (Schlansky insists he’s right, even when the chefs disagree with him.) And while some comedians might have second thoughts if nobody seems entertained by their shenanigans, Conan always doubles down—if only for his own amusement. (The Argentine gauchos did not enjoy his singing talents.)

Despite all the silliness that’s part of the Conan experience, Conan O’Brien Must Go also manages to have moments of real profundity. For one, Conan uses the Ireland episode to explore his own heritage, culminating with a visit to the patch of rural farmland that belonged to his ancestors. It puts everything into perspective: His forebears fled the Irish famine for America, and their descendant returned with a camera crew and decades of fame and success under his belt. Truly, what are the odds? But what really tugs at the heartstrings is a brief video from the Norwegian fish farmer Kai, who explains how Conan’s visit to his small town completely changed his life. It’s genuinely heartwarming stuff, proving that comedy can achieve more than just laughs when it’s approached with curiosity and empathy.

It’s been three years since Conan last graced our screens, and his absence really underlined that he’s one of one. You can’t imagine anyone else showing up to a foreign country and reacting to situations on the fly without everything falling apart at the seams. But as Conan proved time and again during his late-night tenure, that’s where great comedy can be found: among the people, whether it’s in the streets of Harlem or a Civil War reenactment . Conan’s late-night career went through many phases , all of them worthy, but in retrospect, it feels like the format was holding him back. Conan O’Brien Must Go isn’t just a hilarious return to form: It’s one of the best things he’s ever done. Let’s hope the show’s Season 2 renewal will be a matter of when, not if. With Conan at the helm, there are so many more countries worth exploring—and defiling.

Unexploded shell from WWII found at tourist destination on Okinawa

ONNA VILLAGE, Okinawa — Japanese authorities on Thursday night planned to remove an unexploded, 110-pound shell recently discovered at a construction site in Onna Village.

The shell was discovered March 12 by a private contractor sweeping the site for magnetic signatures, a spokesman for Onna Village’s General Affairs Division told Stars and Stripes by phone Thursday.

Eight members of the 101st Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit were assigned to remove the shell, a spokesman for the Ground Self-Defense Force 15th Brigade said by phone Thursday. The unit will deactivate the bomb by removing its fuse.

Part of the Route 58 bypass will be closed during the operation, which was expected to start at 6:45 p.m. and last about two hours, the village spokesman said.

Onna Village is a popular resort destination where many prominent hotel chains occupy the shoreline. None of the hotels will be affected by the operation.

Approximately 10,000 tons of ordnance were dropped on Okinawa during the Battle of Okinawa and nearly 2,000 tons remain undiscovered, according to the prefecture’s General Bureau website. Crews disposed of 14.7 tons between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.

EU proposes youth mobility agreement with UK to help youngsters travel, work and live in both areas

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Commission proposed Thursday to start negotiations with the United Kingdom to allow young people to move freely, work and study in both regions after Brexit — the U.K.'s departure from the EU four years ago.

According to the EU, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU following a referendum in 2016 has damaged mobility between the two areas.

“This situation has particularly affected the opportunities for young people to experience life on the other side of the Channel and to benefit from youth, cultural, educational, research and training exchanges,” the Commission said.

When the U.K. was still a member of the economic and political bloc, its nationals had the right to live and work freely in the EU, with reciprocity for EU nationals in the U.K. Under the agreement proposed by the EU’s executive arm, EU and UK citizens between 18 and 30 years old would be eligible to stay up to four years in the destination country.

The deal would also allow equal treatment of EU and UK students in the field of university tuition fees. Most EU students must now pay international tuition fees if they want to study in the U.K. The Commission says these vary between 11,400 and 38,000 pounds ($14,200-$47,300) per year and are a strong deterrent for EU students who generally don’t have to pay as much within the bloc.

The Commission’s recommendation will be discussed by EU member countries who must give the green light before the executive arm can start negotiations with the UK.

“We have successful Youth Mobility Schemes with 13 countries, including Australia and New Zealand, and remain open to agreeing them with our international partners, including EU member states,” the British government said in a statement.

The U.K. has its own Youth Mobility Scheme, which it has offered to some EU member states. The Commission believes the British plan is less ambitious than its own proposal.

“Our agreements provide a valuable route for cultural exchanges providing partner countries are also willing to offer the same opportunities for young British people,” the British government added.

Quintosol Travel is first class all the way! I didn't know what to expect when visiting Oaxaca but my expectations were surpassed by the expertise of Gloria and Rodger. Wjat an awesome experience! It felt more like a family outing and adventure than a tourist trip. We were treated like royalty while touring the best of the Fest during Dia de los Muertos. We Toured a Mezcal processing plant and a couple of restaurant / art galleries where indigenous locals showed how their art is made my hand. Partook and all of the festivities that the city had to offer during the holiday season and more! The icing on the cake? Gloria booked me to perform my stand up comedy at Club Amblilque on the main strip in Oaxaca! The show sold out and was a smash hit with tourists and locals alike! Gloria and Roger made sure we were taken care of every step of the way from our drivers to our tour guides we were never at a loss.

I have been on the tour of Oaxaca and the tour of Mexico City. Both were outstanding. The itinerary was a mix of culture, shopping and city life. Ms. Reye's recommendations for shopping and restaurants were always great. Her guides were knowledgeable and bilingual. The hotels she chooses are walking distance of great shopping and great restaurants. I hope she adds tour of other citys in Mexico...I will be on board!
