Everything in the pre-trip preparations was excellent. They are will organized on-line for entering travel information and payments. Our contact was easily available for questions or other information. The tour we signed up for was run by VOS (Voyages of Scandinavia). There was just one issue - our tour voucher had the wrong first night hotel. But, as mentioned before, our contact was readily available to advise us. Just a slight inconvenience. The tour itself is a very good itinerary, particular for people who like free time to do as they wish. My advise to VOS is to provide a bit more recommendations on things to do in each area. We found we had to rely on our guide books and tourist centers for information. Otherwise, the bookings for hotels, trains and boats proved very convenient.

What people love about norwegian fjords tours.

Active and rewarding trip.
Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

I couldn't have planned a better trip to Norway on my own. We loved the structure and assurance of the itinerary while having the flexibility to explore on our own. Travelling in January, Nordic Visitor's emergency number gave us peace of mind in case of bad weather. The hotels were excellent and the locations were very convenient to public transportation and places we wanted to visit. The excursions were fantastic. Want a stress-free adventure? Let Nordic Visitor lead the way.

Nordic Visitor made planning for the trip an incredibly smooth process. In particular, Juliana has been absolutely fantastic to work with. She went over and above to ensure we had a great trip, and we owe the success of our trip to her. She was always available for questions, guidance and was ever so responsive to anything we needed. Thank you for an incredible time, we will return to Nordic Visitor for planning all future trips in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Norway Fjord Tours

You may have a few questions about your upcoming tour to the Norwegian fjords, so we’ve answered the most commonly asked ones to save you time. If you want more travel inspiration then check out our Norway Travel Guide , and for booking information read our general  FAQs or our  Booking Terms and Conditions .

1. What created the fjords?

Created in the ice age, fjords were formed when glaciers retreated from land, leaving behind U-shaped valleys and steep cliffs.

2. Where are the fjords in Norway?

Norway is home to more than a thousand fjords and most of these are located on the north and west coasts of Norway. There are no fjords in Norway’s interior east coast or on its south coast.

3. What’s the best way to see the Norwegian fjords?

The fjords of Norway are must-see attractions that are renowned for stunning natural beauty. There are a variety of ways to see them, but the best way will depend on how you prefer to travel.

One of the most popular ways to see Norway is via its reliable and highly-rated railway network and picturesque Norwegian cruise routes . Everything on our tours is arranged for you, so you’ll already have your tickets and timings well in advance of your journey. Our train and cruise packages also give you a great amount of flexibility, with you choosing how much time you want in each area and where you want to add days and activities within the tour.

Another reason to travel this way is for spectacular views. You’ll get to see beautiful landscapes from Northern Europe’s highest railway the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen), and seascapes from the historic Hurtigruten coastal ferry . You can also travel the same scenic coastal route on a more modern Havila voyage.

However, if you want to discover Norway by car and drive the renowned roads such as Ørnevegen ( Eagle Road ) with its beautiful views over the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord , then a self-drive package is for you. With the independence that comes from renting a car, you can visit areas and attractions that are off the beaten path, and dine in restaurants that are further away from the city or town centres. As well as this, your package will include a detailed map of Norway with your accommodations and personalised route marked.

If you want a local guide to take you to each attraction and share their knowledge of Norway, then a small group tour could be an ideal way for you to travel. Unlike many other tour operators, we have smaller groups so that you can spend more time with your guide and don’t feel rushed at any of the attractions. These packages are also more agile as you travel on minibuses which can get you to harder-to-reach areas.

Whichever travel style you prefer, you can put your trust in your dedicated consultant to plan an amazing journey for you and look after all the bookings and logistics.

4. What are the must-see attractions in Norway's fjords?

On your adventure along Norway’s fjords, you get to enjoy the surrounding green areas, fjord villages and plenty of must-see attractions.

UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord is well-known for its beautiful mountains as well as the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil waterfalls. Named after a local folktale, the Seven Sisters waterfall is divided by separate streams that “dance” down the mountainside. The Bridal Veil waterfall drops off a cliff edge, appearing like a delicate thin veil over the rocks.

Another waterfall you should visit is 183-metre high Vøringfossen waterfall. One tip is to view it from the Måbødalen valley where you’ll get a great view of it crashing over the rocks below. This viewpoint will take some walking though, so be sure to bring walking boots and ask your travel consultant about activity levels.

If you’re a nature or geology enthusiast, then you may have heard of the Jostdal glacier (or Jostedalsbreen) the largest icecap in mainland Europe which covers nearly half of Jostedalsbreen National Park. Visit for rocky landscapes, moraines and pretty glacial rivers.

Your trip would not be complete without trips to the many surrounding towns and villages. Stop off at the Old Town of Stavanger for narrow streets and traditional 18th-century houses as well as the oldest church in Norway, Stavanger Cathedral. The charming village of Flåm is nested in Aurlandsfjord and is popular for wildlife watching and as a stop off point for the Flåm Railway .

You can find all these attractions and more in our itineraries, but if want to visit an area or sight that isn’t on the route, speak to your travel consultant to arrange this.

Want more inspiration for your trip to Norway? Read our article on the must-see attractions in Norway  or the best Norway getaways for couples .

5. When is the best time to visit the fjords?

Norway's seasons each carry different benefits that will affect the sightseeing you do, and the activities on your fjord travel wish list.

If you visit from June through August, you’ll get to enjoy the sunshine during the days and nights thanks to the midnight sun phenomena. As well as this, you can join fun activities such as bird watching and kayaking.

The winter months are colder and will require more layers, but the mountains are usually snowy and you’ll have a better chance of seeing the northern lights if you visit between September and March.

Whatever season you choose, our tours have reliable departure dates that can be reserved online.

Read our extensive guide to Norway’s seasons and when to visit, on our blog.

6. What is the best fjord in Norway?

With over a thousand fjords in Norway, it’s difficult to pick the best one. We can certainly share the most popular and well-known ones though, starting with the King of the Fjords, Sognefjord.

The deepest and longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord stretches over 100 miles inland and is home to the famous Flåm Railway and UNESCO-listed Urnes Stave Church . Aptly named for its magnificent views and vast green landscapes, this fjord is a must-see for nature lovers. The Sognefjord in a Nutshell® route or the more popular Norway in a Nutshell® route are great ways to explore the fjord.

Home to Trolltunga, a famous rock formation and viewing point, Hardangerfjord is a perfect destination for lovers of outdoor activities and hiking. You can even walk behind waterfalls such as Steinsdalsfossen and try the cycling and hiking trails of Hardangervidda National Park.

Named after the colourful city of Trondheim, Trondheim Fjord is one of the most convenient fjords to explore. In the summer, there are plenty of car and passenger ferries that will take you to coastal towns like Kristiansund and the island of Munkholmen.

These are but a few suggestions, discover more beautiful fjords and the best way to visit them in our online guide.

7. Which fjords in Norway are UNESCO sites?

In Norway, two fjords are awarded UNESCO World Heritage status: Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord . Both sit in the western region of Norway and are 120 km apart from one another. They are awarded protected status by UNESCO for being the “most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet”.

8. How deep are Norway fjords?

Norway’s fjords have varying depths but the deepest fjord in Norway is Sognefjord, which measures at 1308 metres (4291 feet) from its basin to ground level. To put that into perfective, it’s the length of more than 14 American football fields or taller than 14 Statues of Liberty.

9. What airport to fly into Norway for fjords?

When travelling to Norway’s fjords,  Bergen Airport  is an ideal arrival point as it is situated on the west coast of Norway and close to the likes of Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. However, Oslo Gardermoen Airport is the most convenient for international flights in and out of Norway and a major transport hub to the rest of Norway.

We advise that you start your tour in Oslo and travel to the fjords, as this would mean you also get to explore Norway’s capital city.

For an in-depth look at Norway’s airports and airlines, check out our travel guide on flights to Norway .

10. Can I choose my arrival date?

Yes, we have a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season. All our packages can be purchased online, so you can immediately see if your preferred dates are available. However, if you want to book your trip to Norway longer than a year in advance, contact our travel consultants.

11. How much can I customise my fjord tour?

The amount of customisation you can choose depends on the way you are travelling. Self-guided train and cruise and self-drive tours are more flexible than small group tours as dates are not pre-booked. Our self-drive packages are created with independence in mind, giving you the choice to spend time at the attractions you want. Similarly, our self-guided tours can be altered with extra nights along your journey.

However, for small group tours, you can personalise them by extending your stay at the beginning and end of your journey. You can also alter your trip with additional activities such as kayaking through the fjords and taking a tour of the Stegastein Viewpoint.

12. When should I book my flight tickets?

We suggest that you hold off booking your flights until you’ve received confirmation that your preferred tour is secured. Of course, you can look over flights for timings and dates. Once you’ve had your tour confirmed by your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

If you have any questions or if your flights have changed, you can always contact your consultant .

13. What should I pack for my trip?

The weather in Norway can change at a moment's notice, so we advise that you bring plenty of warm layers, waterproofs and accessories like a light backpack for day tours and gloves and insulated socks. You should also bring:

  • Warm jumpers or fleeces
  • Flask or travel cup
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Gloves, scarves and hats
  • Sensible walking shoes, boots or trainers
  • Warm socks (specifically for winter travel)

For more ideas on how to dress well for the Nordic climate, check out our convenient packing guide .

The Fjords of Norway

The fjords of norway, explore the world-famous norwegian fjords.

When you ask people around the world what they associate with Norway, chances are many of them will answer "fjords". Norway has a multitude of famous fjords, all of which have their own unique characteristics. By taking one of our tours you can get an unforgettable experience of our beautiful Norwegian fjords.

Our Nutshell tours take you through some of Norway's most beautiful fjord scenery and let you explore Norway in a spectacular way. You will experience that every fjord is unique with its own peculiarity and "personality". Have a look on this page and find a fjord that suits you.

The narrow Nærøyfjord - Gudvangen, Norway

The Nærøyfjord

This 17 km long fjord is actually a branch of the mighty Sognefjord stretching out between the charming village of Gudvangen and the Aurlandsfjord, cradling the popular Flåm village in its "bosom".

Due to the unique fjord landscape, the Nærøyfjord was added to the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 2005. It is characteristically narrow, which makes for a truly close encounter with the surrounding landscape when on a cruise here.

Woman enjoying Norway and the Sognefjord in a nutshell - king of fjords in Norway |Fjord Tours

The Sognefjord

With 205 km and a depth of 1300 meters, The Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest. It’s a strong, watery «vein» in the middle of Fjord Norway creating a foundation for commerce, agriculture and tourism.

The fjord is not only characterized by «depth» and «length», but also by «height» with a southeastern mountain range raising 2000 meters over the fjord, covered by Europe’s largest glacier, Jostedalsbreen.

Tour from Oslo or Bergen with Hardangerfjord in a nutshell including fjord cruise

The Hardangerfjord

The Hardanger region is known as "Norway’s orchard" with the lush landscape a fertile ground for fruit and berries with, in particular, the local cider gaining international renown.

The Hardangerfjord is Norway's second longest fjord, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean, 80 km south of Bergen to the traditional industry town of Odda, 179 km further into the land.

Aurland - Stegasteinen

The Aurlandsfjord

The Aurlandsfjord is another branch of the Sognefjord. Like its "twin", Nærøyfjorden, it’s narrow and deep, surrounded by a spectacular landscape. At the innermost part of the fjord lies Flåm.

Flåm is home of the famous "Flåmsbana" Railway line. Its popularity as a tourist destination is due to offering both mountain and fjord when combining a trip on the railway and a fjord cruise.

View of the famous Geirangerfjord & Norway in a nutshell®. The tour takes you to the Geirangerfjord, the Nærøyfjord and the Bryggen Wharf houses in Bergen. The Geirangerfjord is one of the famous Norwegian fjords

The Geirangerfjord

Another favorite among visitors, the Geirangerfjord is an unusually attractive stretch of water with status as a UNESCO world heritage site, located in the Sunnmøre region with the fascinating city of Ålesund as the closest urban center.

Besides the general beauty of the area around the Geiranger village, the "Seven Sisters" waterfall alongside the "Bridal Veil" and "The Suitor" strategically placed opposite the "sisters" are compelling reasons to take a cruise on the fjord!

Nordfjord - Norway

The Nordfjord

Nordfjord offers one of Norway’s most spectacular coast to fjord experiences. Here you can experience the ocean, fjords, glaciers, and impressive mountains.

Nordfjord is home to the exciting town of Loen, with the famous Loen Skylift, as well as dramatic landscapes with a unique culture and authentic environments.

Hurtigruten in the Trollfjord - Svolvær, Norway

The Trollfjord

The Trollfjord is a spectacular Arctic fjord located in the beautiful Lofoten Islands. The entry to the fjord is only 100 meters wide and only accessible by boat, which makes for a dramatic entrance.

The mountain peaks surrounding the fjord is up to 1100 meters high which adds to this amazing experience. Here you will often be able to see sea eagles circling around the mountain peaks.

Tour to the scenic Hjørundfjord. Including fjord cruise and a scenic rail trip | Hjorundfjord & Norway in a nutshell®

The Hjørundfjord

The Romsdalsfjord in Møre & Romsdal is surrounded by the majestic Romsdalsalpene Mountains. The sides of the fjords are dense with forrest, due to the extensive rainfall in the area.

The mountain peaks surrounding the fjord are tall, sharp, and somewhat intimidating. The peaks are covered with snow and hanging glaciers, which gives the fjord a sort of Alpine feel.

The Romsdalsfjord - Norway

The Romsdalsfjord

The Romsdalsfjord in Møre & Romsdal is also surrounded by the majestic Romsdalsalpene Mountains. This area is perfect for active outdoor experiences with close proximity to "The Alp town by the fjord" Åndalsnes.

The fjord is relatively short and the entire length can be experienced in one day. Wolf Larsen, the main character in Jack London's novel "The Sea-Wolf" claims that he was born close to the Romsdalsfjord.

Preikestolen Panoramic Sunset - The Lysefjord, Norway

The Lysefjord

Home to the mighty Preikestolen, the Kjerag Boulder and the worlds longest wooden staircase at Flørli. The Lysefjord is not the largest, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty.

The Lysefjord area has also received the Sustainable Destination certificate and the industry and comunity here work systematically to reduce the negative impact of tourism.

  • Pass by the 13th-century, stone Bergenhus Fortress and the bustling Fish And Flower Market.
  • Hop on the Fløibanen funicular in the city center, then relax and enjoy a remarkable panorama as you climb 1,050 feet above sea level in a matter of minutes. Disembark atop Mount Fløyen and take in more incredible views of Bergen and the surrounding fjords.

Bergen Farm Lunch

From $199 per person

Spend the day journeying through Norway’s fjord country, a region of otherworldly natural beauty.

  • Journey by train from Bergen to Myrdal.
  • In Myrdal, board the historic Flåm Railway for a spectacularly scenic ride down a mountain on one of the steepest tracks in the world, then through the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway.
  • Disembark in tiny Flåm—a picturesque settlement of just 350 people that overlooks dramatic Aurlandsfjord and traces its roots back to the 1300s.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner with your group.

Board a RIB (a rigid inflatable boat) and take to the water on an expertly led safari through the UNESCO-listed Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord—both branches of the mighty Sognefjord.

  • Cruise along the dramatic landscape and listen as your guide shares local lore and legends.
  • Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as seals, porpoises, and eagles, as you take in the scenery from aboard your boat.
  • Take in views of towering waterfalls, including the narrow Sagfossen, and quaint villages; one tiny village you’ll spot, Undredal, is home to roughly 100 people (and 500 goats) and served as inspiration for the animated smash-hit movie Frozen.

Gudvangen Viking Village & Undredal Tasting Tour

From $135 per person

Leave Flåm behind as you take a gorgeous drive inland to the Geirangerfjord region, the crown jewel of the Norwegian fjordlands.

  • Head into the 16-mile-long Fjærlandsfjord and stop in its namesake village for some free time. Find a bite to eat for lunch, or do some quick exploring and discover why Fjærland earned its reputation as a book-loving town.
  • Forge on to Briksdal Glacier—an arm of the Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in continental Europe—by way of Troll car. These open-air, off-road buggies take you to within a few hundred meters of Briksdal (and let you take in mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and more impressive scenery along the way).

Later, continue on to your hotel in the Geirangerfjord region and enjoy an included dinner this evening.

Please note: Visiting Briksdal Glacier is only possible from June to October, and it depends on the weather. When it isn’t open, a visit to a stave church will replace Briksdal Glacier and Fjærlandsfjord.

Sail through Norway’s stunning UNESCO-listed fjords today.

  • Begin with a stop at the Norwegian Fjord Centre and explore exhibits that demonstrate the geological history and biodiversity of the area. Then, enjoy free time: Grab lunch or explore the outdoor areas around the Centre.
  • Venture out onto the Geiranger Skywalk. With a gridded iron floor and glass-walled guard rails, this attraction offers an unparalleled view of the Geirangerfjord and its surrounding scenery—all from a perch on Mount Dalsnibba, almost 5,000 feet in the air.
  • Board a sightseeing boat to sail through the Geirangerfjord and take in a host of magnificent waterfalls—like the Seven Sisters, the Bridal Veil, and the Suitor—as they plunge off towering cliffs. And don’t forget to keep a lookout for abandoned mountain farms and gorgeous marine wildlife, like playful porpoises.

Later, sit down for an included dinner at a local restaurant this evening.

Travel along the Trollstigen mountain pass—one of Norway’s most popular, scenic, and thrilling summer driving routes thanks to its mountainous setting and famous hairpin turns—as you make your way to Ålesund. The picturesque port town is known for its panoramic views of the surrounding archipelago and fjords, as well as the art nouveau architectural style in which many of its structures were built following a fire in 1904.

Today, embark on a guided tour of Ålesund, a seaside town spread over several islands that’s rich in Art Nouveau architecture.

  • Start with a visit to the Giske archipelago, home to monuments from the Viking and Middle Ages.
  • View the 12th-century Giske Church, which was built in the Norman style by an unknown architect and remains the only marble church in all of Norway; its structure presents an even bigger mystery than its creator, as nobody knows the source of the white marble used to build the church.
  • Head to the nearby island of Godøya and climb to the top of the 19th-century Alnes Lighthouse.
  • Make your way up Aksla Mountain to Fjellstua, a viewpoint offering sweeping, near-360-degree views of Ålesund and its archipelago below.
  • Explore the streets of Ålesund and admire the Art Nouveau architecture, made prevalent after a fire ripped through the town in 1904.

Fly to Oslo in the morning. Then, step inside the Fram Museum to learn about Norway’s storied history of polar exploration through interactive exhibits and other displays. One can’t-miss highlight: the Gjøa, the sloop used by pioneering Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen to complete the first successful transit of the Northwest Passage.

Meet up with your local guide this morning to discover Oslo—the vibrant Norwegian capital and a city that was first settled in the mid-10th century.

  • Take a private tour of the Nobel Peace Center. One of the most-visited museums in all of Norway, it occupies a former railway station. Here, through a series of interactive and multimedia exhibits, you’ll learn about the laureates whose tremendous humanitarian efforts helped make the world a better place.
  • Walk through Vigeland Park and stroll among over 200 bronze, granite, and cast-iron sculptures created by artist Gustav Vigeland. Known as Frogner Park to the locals, this open-air exhibition doubles as the largest greenspace in all of Oslo.

Spend a free afternoon in Oslo or add an excursion.

Tonight, gather together to celebrate your trip during a farewell dinner.

Oslo Walking Food Tour

From $155 per person

Transfer to the airport for your flight home, or extend your trip to explore Bodø and the Lofoten Islands.

Catch a flight to the town of Bodø this morning, located just north of the Arctic Circle.

Upon arrival, head to the island of Knaplundsøya and check out the Saltstraumen, a small strait that’s home to one of the world’s strongest tidal currents. From the bridge above, you’ll be able to view its impressively strong maelstroms during high tide—whirlpools over 30 feet across and more than 15 feet deep.

Please note: On some departures, the timing of the tides may prevent us from visiting Saltstraumen. If this happens, the activity will be replaced by a visit to the Kjerringøy Trading Post.

Travel by ferry to the Lofoten Islands, a scenic archipelago of seven islands replete with dramatic scenery and boasting a rich cultural heritage.

  • Cruise to the island of Moskenes, where you’ll find small, traditional fisherman’s cabins; little islands dotted with homes; and mountains that pitch right into the sea.
  • Visit Nusfjord, an authentic fishing village nestled along a secluded bit of coastline on the southern shores of Flakstadøya island.
  • Enter the Lofotr Viking Museum. Based on the largest Viking longhouse ever excavated, this exhibition houses unique archaeological finds and demonstrates Viking life as it was in the sixth century. Join a guide on a tour of the museum, learning about the area’s history. Step inside the Chieftain’s House—a full-scale reconstruction of the building originally discovered by archaeologists—then enjoy free time on the premises. Finally, sit down to a hearty feast during an included lunch.

Continue on to your hotel on the Lofoten Islands and get settled in for the evening.

Enjoy a free morning on the Lofoten Islands or add an excursion.

Later, travel to the fishing village of Henningsvær and take a sightseeing tour of the different islands that make it up.

  • Meet up with a local guide and take a walk through town, learning about its maritime past.
  • Visit the KaviarFactory, an award-winning contemporary art museum that took up residence in a restored 1950s caviar plant. Its exhibitions and installations feature the work of both Norwegian and international artists, and its bookshop boasts some rare finds.
  • Take time to explore the village center, and pop into cafes, bakeries, boutiques, and other interesting spots at your leisure.

  • In order to enter Norway, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you’re not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code NOR.
  • You’ll walk for at least two hours daily across moderately uneven terrain—including wet, slippery gravel; snow; ice; and paved paths with some uphill climbs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

  • Flights from Oslo to Bodø and from Narvik to Oslo, as well as a ferry ride from Bodø to Moskenes, are included in the price of the tour extension.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some may impose additional charges if you choose to check any bags; be advised that you’re responsible for any such costs.
  • You may contact your airline for detailed information regarding baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note: Our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
  • One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it doesn’t exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height).
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Temperatures in Norway are often cool, even in summer months, and winters are very cold. Areas along Norway’s coast can be wet, windy, and chilly as well. We suggest packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can easily be layered, as well as a light jacket or rainwear. Avoid wearing cotton whenever possible—it’s an ineffective insulator and retains moisture. Wool, on the other hand, is an effective insulator. We recommend packing wool base layers, socks, and sweaters if you plan to visit during cold winter months.
  • A warm, sturdy pair of walking shoes or winter boots is strongly recommended for sightseeing. You may also want to consider bringing ice cleats for better traction.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It’s preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders. You may be denied entry if you do.
  • Please note: There are often baggage restrictions during internal transfers, including ferry rides and internal flights. We recommend packing light.
  • Check with your doctor or healthcare provider, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov, at least 60 days prior to departure to review the latest updates and entry requirements.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour, as well as any possible delays you may encounter.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Norwegian cuisine is varied, offering something for every traveler. Lamb is the most traditional meat, but you’ll also find everything from goose to deer. Seafood lovers will enjoy the country’s array of smoked salmon, shellfish, pickled herring, and scrod. Typical meals often incorporate grains, locally produced cheeses, fresh produce, and wild berries.
  • Norway operates on the European standard of 220–240 volts and uses Type C or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other electrical device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in some European hotels may not be as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it’s usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Norway is one hour ahead of GMT and six ahead of EST.
  • The amount of daylight in Norway greatly varies based on the season. Expect as much as 19 hours of daylight in the summer and as little as six in the winter.
  • You will use the Norwegian krone on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you bring debit/bank and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed.
  • You can use most debit and credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in the local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend that each person tips the equivalent of USD$10 to USD$12 per day for your Tour Director, and the equivalent of USD$3 per day for your driver.

Tour Highlights

tours norway fjords

The Nærøyfjord

The Nærøyfjord is the narrowest and best-known of the many arms of the Sognefjord. Surrounded by towering mountains up to 1,700 meters high, this arm of the Sognefjord is amazingly beautiful. With its steep mountainsides, hanging valleys, towering peaks, waterfalls, and small hamlets, this fjord is perhaps the most outstanding natural attraction in Norway. The Nærøyfjord is 20 km long, only 250 meters across at its narrowest and a mere 12 meters at its shallowest. The surrounding mountains reach heights of 1,660 meters, and the fjord is one of the multiple highlights on several of our tours.

tours norway fjords

The Aurlandsfjord

The Aurlandsfjord is a 17-kilometer arm of the world’s second-longest fjord, the Sognefjord, and starts in Flåm and ends at the mountain Beitelen, which separates the Aurlandsfjord from the Nærøyfjord. Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Aurlandsfjord is one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. This stunning fjord is a part of the World Heritage area and is surrounded by high mountains that reach heights of over 1,400 meters.

The Flåmsbana Railway

Flåmsbana or Flåm Railway  is a spectacular train journey that offers a panoramic view of some of the wildest and most magnificent nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape. The 20 km-long train ride took 20 years to build and is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world. On the train ride that operates between Myrdal and Flåm, you can see rivers cutting through deep ravines, waterfalls cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains, and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes.

The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Railway is the 500-kilometer-long railway line between Bergen and Oslo. It has several times been named one of the world's best railway experiences.

The Bergen Railway is Northern Europe's highest stretch of railway and crosses both the Langfjellene mountains and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, with Finse as the highest station at 1222 meters.

7 reasons to visit norway’s nordfjord this year.

The Loen Skylift cable car offers magnificent views of the Nordfjord region of Norway.

Seeking an authentic experience in the Norwegian fjords? The Nordfjord region epitomizes the beauty and cultural richness of the Norwegian fjords, offering everything from breathtaking natural landscapes to immersive cultural experiences.

In the years to come, there’s set to be an increase in the number of cruise ships visiting the Nordfjord. Norway’s upcoming environmental restrictions will see most cruise ships banned from the UNESCO World Heritage listed fjords, so lines are already looking to the Nordfjord as an impressive alternative for their guests.

Whether you’re choosing a Norwegian fjords cruise or planning an independent trip, here are seven reasons to make the Nordfjord region a top priority in your travel plans.

Ride The Loen Skylift

The Loen Skylift provides one of the most spectacular views in Norway, encompassing fjords, mountains, and distant glaciers. The cable car ride offers a breathtaking ascent from the shores of the Nordfjord to the summit of Mount Hoven, soaring more than 3,300 feet above sea level.

At the top, visitors can indulge in various activities, including hiking, dining at the mountaintop restaurant, or simply taking in the views.

The major downside of the trip is the cost. At 595 Norwegian kroner ($55), it’s an expensive attraction. Cruise ship passengers arriving in Olden should also factor in the transport to Loen.

Google makes a major new sale offer to pixel 8 buyers, las vegas show sues michael jackson estate over broadway show logo.

Local tour providers such as Olden Cruise offer combined bus transfer and cable car tickets that, while expensive, cost less than cruise ship excursions.

Drive Along Lake Lovatnet

A journey around Lake Lovatnet is both serene and thrilling with its clear, turquoise waters contrasted by steep mountains. The extremely narrow road traces the water's edge, offering views of lush landscapes and dramatic cliffs.

Lovatnet lake is a beauty spot of the Nordfjord region of Norway.

This drive presents numerous opportunities for stopping at small beaches or starting a kayak trip on the lake’s calm waters.

It also presents an opportunity to learn the tragic history of this beauty spot. In 1905 and again in 1936, devastating rockslides from fell into the lake from the surrounding mountains, causing massive tsunamis that wiped out nearby farms and took many lives.

These events have left lasting scars both on the mountainous landscape and the communities around Lovatnet.

See The Briksdal Glacier

Even though they are diminishing at pace, Norway’s glaciers are an awe-inspiring sight of the power of nature. A tour to see the Briksdal glacier is a popular day activity from Olden, especially for cruise ship visitors.

Briksdal is an arm of the larger Jostedalsbreen Glacier, which remains the largest glacier on continental Europe despite its shrinking size. The Briksdal arm descends from more than 6,000 feet above sea level, stretching over a horizontal distance of 1.25 miles towards its glacial lake.

Over thousands of years, it sculpted the Briksdalen valley, characterized by smooth rock surfaces covered in lush vegetation. This stunning landscape, celebrated as one of Norway’s most beautiful, has attracted tourists for over a century.

Briksdal glacier has receded a lot in recent years, but still attracts a lot of visitors.

With views of cascading waterfalls and sharp peaks, the raw beauty of the walk to the glacier is just as memorable as the ice itself.

Shuttle buses are available from both Stryn and Olden to the Briksdal lodge, from where the walk to the glacier begins. Electric buggies known as ‘troll cars’ are available to shorten the walk, but these are popular and should be booked in advance.

Discover Viking Boatbuilding

The Myklebust Ship, discovered in 1874 in Nordfjordeid, is the largest Viking ship ever found in the country. Excavated from a burial mound, it is central to the exhibitions at the Sagastad Viking Center .

Although initially overshadowed by more intact discoveries like the Gokstad and Oseberg ships, the Myklebust Ship's remains, mostly ashes and rivets from its ceremonial burning, hint at its grandeur and the high status of its occupant, likely a Viking king.

The ship, approximately 100 feet long, has been meticulously reconstructed, showcasing traditional Viking craftsmanship and now features as a key exhibit at Sagastad, where it can also be boarded by visitors. On special occasions, the ship will be launched into the fjord.

Meet Norwegian Fjord Horses

The Norwegian Fjord Horse is one of the world’s oldest and purest horse breeds. Native to Norway, these sturdy, mild-mannered horses are known for their distinctive dun color and mane.

Various farms around the Nordfjord region offer horse riding experiences, where visitors can ride through the picturesque landscapes, guided by experienced handlers.

Native to Norway, the Norwegian Fjord Horse can be found along the Nordfjord.

Start at the Norwegian Fjord Horse Center in Nordfjordeid, where stallion shows have been held since the 19th century.

Experience The Wild West Cape

The exposed coastline around the mouth of the Nordfjord offers a dramatic view of the North Atlantic from the westernmost point of mainland Norway.

Known for its rugged terrain and panoramic views, the West Cape and its surroundings provide ideal settings for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The stark beauty and often wild weather provide a thrilling experience that encapsulates the untamed spirit of the region while contrasting with the relative peace of the fjords farther inland.

Admire The Churches Of Olden

For passengers arriving in Olden on a cruise ship, the village is little more than a place to board the bus to the Briksdal glacier or Loen Skylift. Yet Olden offers an authentic look at a typical Norwegian fjord village, including not just one, but two old churches.

Olden Old Church, built in 1759, and the newer Olden Church, constructed in 1934, reflect the rich religious heritage in the fjord region. Both wooden structures are distinguished by their simplistic yet striking architecture.

Surrounded by lush greenery and set against dramatic mountain backdrops, these churches provide a peaceful escape and are worth a visit once you’ve enjoyed the more dramatic highlights of the region.

What Summer Travel to Europe Will Look Like This Year

With additional reporting by Sarah Allard

When travel journalist Jenn Rice decided to spend July and August in Italy and Croatia last year, she wasn’t expecting to be spending most of her time indoors. “It was very very hot, so I booked museum tickets during peak days or just lounged around in my room with a spritz and a book until the sun set.” In Dubrovnik she tried escaping to the sea for a cool dip, but everyone else had the same idea—resulting in sweaty, overcrowded beaches. “In Rome , gelato melted faster than the speed of light,” she says.

Image may contain City Urban Person and Downtown

Come summer, major attractions like the Spanish Steps in Rome are thronged by international tourists and vacationing Europeans.

Rome and Dubrovnik weren’t the only European destinations overcome with heat. To travel in Europe in the summer of 2023 was to experience first-hand a single season of contrasting extremes. Temperatures swung from hot and dry to cold and wet, and heatwaves broke out across several of the most heavily touristed destinations, with temperatures reaching upwards of 100°F. In Northern Greece, wildfires broke out —the worst experienced there in 20 years —destroying homes, forests, and vineyards.

Yet in the midst of it all, the continent also saw record-breaking tourist numbers —the highest since pre-pandemic levels—even as hotel prices swelled and airfares hit peaks. From scenic escapes like Bellagio in Como and Taormina in Sicily (where the White Lotus effect was on full display) to bucket-list cities like Paris and Madrid , much of touristed Europe was completely overwhelmed.

“We had people calling us from Athens and Rome asking us to get them out [to somewhere cooler in Europe], because it was too hot and too crowded,” recalls Jan Sortland , founder of Scandinavia specialists Norwegian Adventures.

International tourists weren’t the only ones thronging these spots. According to the European Travel Commission , most Europeans took their vacations before the peak month of August, with Italy and France being their top destinations. This resulted in packed crowds at all the major attractions. For John Canning, an LA-based executive who traveled to Paris in July, the crowds were eye-opening. “We didn’t anticipate that everything we would want to see was sold out. We only got Musée d’Orsay tickets through our concierge at a substantial premium and could not get into the Louvre full stop,” he says.

Rice says the summer taught her to plan her travel differently this year—and beyond: “I’m going to try and do coastal Italy early in May, and if I decide to travel in Europe this summer it will be either Asturias in Northern Spain or the Julian Alps in Slovenia to keep cool."

She’s not alone—according to the travel specialists we spoke with, there’s an increased interest in lesser-known destinations offering a more laid back (and cooler) holiday. “Our guests are asking after places where they can be outdoors, yet have access to wine & foodie experiences and culture. Slovenia is a great example of where you can have all that without being overwhelmed with the heat; the Dolomites in Italy is another,” says Rachael Mendizabal, Europe travel specialist at Scott Dunn . Richard Hyde, COO at Small Luxury Hotels of the World , is seeing similar trends across their European portfolio: “Guests seem to be gravitating towards alternative destinations—Milos instead of Mykonos and Slovenia instead of Spain.”

Image may contain Outdoors Nature Scenery Water Person Landscape Lake and Sea

Norway is a popular destination this summer, offering cooler weather and a myriad ways to be active outside, exploring the islands and fjords.

A big part of that shift will play into Sortland’s area of expertise: Northern Europe. With the Med getting too hot to handle, experts predict that tourism will shift northwards. “We’re seeing a lot of interest in Copenhagen and Stockholm for the cultural experience, and then onward to Norway for the nature. Currently, the fjords are still a favorite but Norway is a large country and there’s so much more to see—the Helgeland coast for example with its beautiful coastline and mountainous islands,” he says. The draw is a more moderate temperature and unique outdoor experiences. “ Iceland is a big favorite right now with the Northern lights being the most active this year from September through March,” says Mendizabal.

How to Pack Light When You're Only Traveling With a Carry-On

Karthika Gupta

In turn, for many, the more standard city breaks will fall later in the year. “Athens and Rome will always be desirable destinations, but we’ve seen an uptick in many people preferring to go there in May and October to swerve crowds,” says Carolyn Addison, head of product at Black Tomato , noting the weather in fall has been stable lately and enticing to travelers not tied to school holidays.

With this increased flexibility, shoulder season will become tricker to define, according to Mendizabal. Thanks to hotels extending their season as demand shifts to almost year-round and the high-season pricing window getting longer, the days of “scooping a deal in September are likely over.” At Jumeirah Palace in Capri , the season now runs from March to the end of December. “Thanks to the good weather, guests are staying longer than in the past,” says Ermanno Zanini, regional vice president at Jumeirah Group, Southern Europe and United Kingdom.

Castello di Vicarello in Tuscany 's Maremma countryside has traditionally stayed open in March and November. “We're pushing the low season as much as possible because we truly believe it is a wonderful time to discover Tuscany. There is so much for guests to enjoy from hiking to mountain biking, truffle hunting, and wine tastings,” says owner Neri Baccheschi Berti.

Crucially, traveling in the shoulder and off seasons isn't just about avoiding the crowds; it’s knowing that seasonal destinations are multi-dimensional, with year-round appeal. “One of my favorite things to do in cooler weather is to hike to the peak of Mount Solaro, with its beautiful views of the town of Capri and the bay of Marina Piccola with the Faraglioni, as well as Anacapri. You also see plenty of wintering birds on the island,” says Zanini.

Image may contain: Henri Matisse, Art, Collage, Boat, Transportation, Vehicle, Baby, Person, City, Bread, Food, and Plate.

Zanini adds that they are in talks with the island's municipality to consider what it would take to stay open in February and March, traditionally strictly closed off. “It's not as straightforward as you think. There’s a lot of infrastructure that needs to be geared towards the low season: restaurants need to stay open, as do shops, and guides need to be available; it can’t just be the hotel,” he adds.

However, with staying open longer, there’s a real opportunity to engage local communities year-round, not to mention stabilize the hiring pool—and improve work culture. “We’ve already seen the positive impact of a longer season for our partners on the ground and locals in the hospitality and tourism sector,” says Addison, who adds that shifts in travel seasons are far from a fleeting trend. “This pattern for more year-round travel will continue to pick up pace in 2025—and beyond," she says.

Travel specialists are quick to point out that even with some of this rebalancing, summer this year and next will continue to see high demand for travel to—and within—Europe. According to Hayley Berg, chief economist at Hopper, while airfare remains higher than at this time in 2019, 40% of all searches for international trips this summer are to Europe, in line with last year and slightly higher than in 2019.

“Sure, we think that traveler numbers on the Côte d'Azur will smooth out through the year, but summer will certainly remain the festive season—only it will be longer,” says Lucie Weill, owner of wellness retreat Lily of the Valley near St. Tropez , which sees its faire share of packed streets and crowded beaches come summer. Weill adds that the hotel has seen success in extending its season.

For travel specialist Cari Gray of Gray & Co . late requests and a lack of flexibility could mean getting turned away because of a lack of availability. “Whether it’s a visit to the Vatican or dogsledding in Alaska , access is going to be very difficult. And there are only that many high-end lodges in Lapland ,” she says. Addison offers the example of Lake Como , where the best properties can often get booked up a year or two in advance during the busiest summer months. “Knowing that the top hotels and guides are getting booked up and that weather disruptions are increasingly unpredictable, clients who want to commit to the most popular summer hotspots in Europe, like the Greek islands and Sardinia are securing their bookings a year out.”

The Balearic island of Menorca is a charming escape with its rocky coves, white-sand beaches, and green rolling hills.

Ultimately, it’s not about giving up on all the places you love: just about pivoting, even if within the same country. “Why not Menorca instead of Mallorca, with its explosion of fantastic hotels and its great beach front, or Epirus in Northern Greece on the Albanian border with its Stone villages, old-growth forests, and truffle hunts instead of the islands," says Gray.

"In Italy we’re always pushing to discover new areas, even in regions that we’ve been exploring for decades like Tuscany and Umbria because new hotels are opening up regularly,” says Courtney Mundy , a travel specialist at experiential travel experts Butterfield & Robinson.

And, a word of caution for the rising favorites: “Smaller destinations in Iceland & Norway will really need to consider how to manage the higher number of visitors than ever before,” says Addison. “Parts of Iceland are overtouristed,” agrees Sortland, “so, it’s not unreasonable to think that smaller communities in Norway could eventually be at risk, too.” Whether it's through new tourist tax regimens or limits on cruise ship day-trippers to reduce crowding, a shifting tide will need more alert local governments—and as we’re swapping beaches for the mountains or Rome for Stockholm, more responsible travel habits that leave fewer traces behind.

Scientists estimate that sharks were swimming the seas some 190 million years before dinosaurs roamed the earth, and they’re still here. That’s only one reason why we’re fascinated by the creatures that live in the oceans—one of the few areas of the earth where humans do not roam.

Whether they’re in cold Arctic environments or the warm tropics of the Caribbean, sea creatures surprise and amaze us. See the seas’ fish, underwater mammals and birds, reptiles, coral and more!
