I couldn't have planned a better trip to Norway on my own. We loved the structure and assurance of the itinerary while having the flexibility to explore on our own. Travelling in January, Nordic Visitor's emergency number gave us peace of mind in case of bad weather. The hotels were excellent and the locations were very convenient to public transportation and places we wanted to visit. The excursions were fantastic. Want a stress-free adventure? Let Nordic Visitor lead the way.

Nordic Visitor made planning for the trip an incredibly smooth process. In particular, Juliana has been absolutely fantastic to work with. She went over and above to ensure we had a great trip, and we owe the success of our trip to her. She was always available for questions, guidance and was ever so responsive to anything we needed. Thank you for an incredible time, we will return to Nordic Visitor for planning all future trips in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Norway Fjord Tours
You may have a few questions about your upcoming tour to the Norwegian fjords, so we’ve answered the most commonly asked ones to save you time. If you want more travel inspiration then check out our Norway Travel Guide , and for booking information read our general FAQs or our Booking Terms and Conditions .
1. What created the fjords?
Created in the ice age, fjords were formed when glaciers retreated from land, leaving behind U-shaped valleys and steep cliffs.
2. Where are the fjords in Norway?
Norway is home to more than a thousand fjords and most of these are located on the north and west coasts of Norway. There are no fjords in Norway’s interior east coast or on its south coast.
3. What’s the best way to see the Norwegian fjords?
The fjords of Norway are must-see attractions that are renowned for stunning natural beauty. There are a variety of ways to see them, but the best way will depend on how you prefer to travel.
One of the most popular ways to see Norway is via its reliable and highly-rated railway network and picturesque Norwegian cruise routes . Everything on our tours is arranged for you, so you’ll already have your tickets and timings well in advance of your journey. Our train and cruise packages also give you a great amount of flexibility, with you choosing how much time you want in each area and where you want to add days and activities within the tour.
Another reason to travel this way is for spectacular views. You’ll get to see beautiful landscapes from Northern Europe’s highest railway the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen), and seascapes from the historic Hurtigruten coastal ferry . You can also travel the same scenic coastal route on a more modern Havila voyage .
However, if you want to discover Norway by car and drive the renowned roads such as Ørnevegen ( Eagle Road ) with its beautiful views over the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord , then a self-drive package is for you. With the independence that comes from renting a car, you can visit areas and attractions that are off the beaten path, and dine in restaurants that are further away from the city or town centres. As well as this, your package will include a detailed map of Norway with your accommodations and personalised route marked.
If you want a local guide to take you to each attraction and share their knowledge of Norway, then a small group tour could be an ideal way for you to travel. Unlike many other tour operators, we have smaller groups so that you can spend more time with your guide and don’t feel rushed at any of the attractions. These packages are also more agile as you travel on minibuses which can get you to harder-to-reach areas.
Whichever travel style you prefer, you can put your trust in your dedicated consultant to plan an amazing journey for you and look after all the bookings and logistics.
4. What are the must-see attractions in Norway's fjords?
On your adventure along Norway’s fjords, you get to enjoy the surrounding green areas, fjord villages and plenty of must-see attractions.
UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord is well-known for its beautiful mountains as well as the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil waterfalls. Named after a local folktale, the Seven Sisters waterfall is divided by separate streams that “dance” down the mountainside. The Bridal Veil waterfall drops off a cliff edge, appearing like a delicate thin veil over the rocks.
Another waterfall you should visit is 183-metre high Vøringfossen waterfall. One tip is to view it from the Måbødalen valley where you’ll get a great view of it crashing over the rocks below. This viewpoint will take some walking though, so be sure to bring walking boots and ask your travel consultant about activity levels.
If you’re a nature or geology enthusiast, then you may have heard of the Jostdal glacier (or Jostedalsbreen) the largest icecap in mainland Europe which covers nearly half of Jostedalsbreen National Park. Visit for rocky landscapes, moraines and pretty glacial rivers.
Your trip would not be complete without trips to the many surrounding towns and villages. Stop off at the Old Town of Stavanger for narrow streets and traditional 18th-century houses as well as the oldest church in Norway, Stavanger Cathedral. The charming village of Flåm is nested in Aurlandsfjord and is popular for wildlife watching and as a stop off point for the Flåm Railway .
You can find all these attractions and more in our itineraries, but if want to visit an area or sight that isn’t on the route, speak to your travel consultant to arrange this.

5. When is the best time to visit the fjords?
Norway's seasons each carry different benefits that will affect the sightseeing you do, and the activities on your fjord travel wish list.
If you visit from June through August, you’ll get to enjoy the sunshine during the days and nights thanks to the midnight sun phenomena. As well as this, you can join fun activities such as bird watching and kayaking.
The winter months are colder and will require more layers, but the mountains are usually snowy and you’ll have a better chance of seeing the northern lights if you visit between September and March.
Whatever season you choose, our tours have reliable departure dates that can be reserved online.
Read our extensive guide to Norway’s seasons and when to visit, on our blog.
6. What is the best fjord in Norway?
With over a thousand fjords in Norway, it’s difficult to pick the best one. We can certainly share the most popular and well-known ones though, starting with the King of the Fjords, Sognefjord.
The deepest and longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord stretches over 100 miles inland and is home to the famous Flåm Railway and UNESCO-listed Urnes Stave Church . Aptly named for its magnificent views and vast green landscapes, this fjord is a must-see for nature lovers. The Sognefjord in a Nutshell® route or the more popular Norway in a Nutshell® route are great ways to explore the fjord.
Home to Trolltunga, a famous rock formation and viewing point, Hardangerfjord is a perfect destination for lovers of outdoor activities and hiking. You can even walk behind waterfalls such as Steinsdalsfossen and try the cycling and hiking trails of Hardangervidda National Park.
Named after the colourful city of Trondheim, Trondheim Fjord is one of the most convenient fjords to explore. In the summer, there are plenty of car and passenger ferries that will take you to coastal towns like Kristiansund and the island of Munkholmen.
These are but a few suggestions, discover more beautiful fjords and the best way to visit them in our online guide.
7. Which fjords in Norway are UNESCO sites?
In Norway, two fjords are awarded UNESCO World Heritage status: Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord . Both sit in the western region of Norway and are 120 km apart from one another. They are awarded protected status by UNESCO for being the “most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet”.
8. How deep are Norway fjords?
Norway’s fjords have varying depths but the deepest fjord in Norway is Sognefjord, which measures at 1308 metres (4291 feet) from its basin to ground level. To put that into perfective, it’s the length of more than 14 American football fields or taller than 14 Statues of Liberty.
9. What airport to fly into Norway for fjords?
When travelling to Norway’s fjords, Bergen Airport is an ideal arrival point as it is situated on the west coast of Norway and close to the likes of Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord. However, Oslo Gardermoen Airport is the most convenient for international flights in and out of Norway and a major transport hub to the rest of Norway.
We advise that you start your tour in Oslo and travel to the fjords, as this would mean you also get to explore Norway’s capital city.
For an in-depth look at Norway’s airports and airlines, check out our travel guide on flights to Norway .
10. Can I choose my arrival date?
Yes, we have a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season. All our packages can be purchased online, so you can immediately see if your preferred dates are available. However, if you want to book your trip to Norway longer than a year in advance, contact our travel consultants.
11. How much can I customise my fjord tour?
The amount of customisation you can choose depends on the way you are travelling. Self-guided train and cruise and self-drive tours are more flexible than small group tours as dates are not pre-booked. Our self-drive packages are created with independence in mind, giving you the choice to spend time at the attractions you want. Similarly, our self-guided tours can be altered with extra nights along your journey.
However, for small group tours, you can personalise them by extending your stay at the beginning and end of your journey. You can also alter your trip with additional activities such as kayaking through the fjords and taking a tour of the Stegastein Viewpoint.
12. When should I book my flight tickets?
We suggest that you hold off booking your flights until you’ve received confirmation that your preferred tour is secured. Of course, you can look over flights for timings and dates. Once you’ve had your tour confirmed by your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.
If you have any questions or if your flights have changed, you can always contact your consultant .
13. What should I pack for my trip?
The weather in Norway can change at a moment's notice, so we advise that you bring plenty of warm layers, waterproofs and accessories like a light backpack for day tours and gloves and insulated socks. You should also bring:
- Warm jumpers or fleeces
- Flask or travel cup
- A waterproof jacket
- Gloves, scarves and hats
- Sensible walking shoes, boots or trainers
- Warm socks (specifically for winter travel)

"Our guide was Bjarte, and honestly, in a fantastic day, he was one of the highlights! His genuine and infectious enthusiasm for and appreciation of the sights he was showing the group and the information he was sharing really made the day brilliant.
It’s a long day, and like other people have said, there is a fair bit of time on the bus but on the way to the 2-hr fjord cruise, the bus trip is broken up with lots of amazing stops and on the way back, many of us just relaxed and had a bit of a nap. The scenery on the way out to Flåm is breath-taking and the cruise is incredible. Would highly recommend this tour and Bjarte in particular."
VecAustralia - Tripadvisor
"A once in a lifetime experience. Pictures don’t do it justice. This was the highlight of our trip and our tour guide (Bjarte) made it 100% better. The trip consisted of multiple mini stops to explore the natural beauty for west norway. Bjarte shared amazing history of the foundations. Honestly I would recommend that you book this when you visit Bergen."
Martine C - Tripadvisor
"Stig was an amazing guide and made the your even better! His knowledge on Norwegian history, culture, and landscapes left me so much more informed than before the tour. Plus the fjord cruise through Nerøyfjorden was sensational, if you have a full day then do this tour. You won't regret it!"
Paul S - Tripadvisor
"Highly recommend this trip! We met at the meeting point right on time, we were seated in a comfortable mini-bus. Our guide, Stig, was an excellent driver and story-teller. We had a quick coffee and toilet stop after an hour of driving, and stopped by the waterfall in Voss. We also had an extra stop by the hotel with the excellent view of the hills and valley. We arrived in Gudvangen at about 11:30AM and boarded the 12noon cruise. The views were fabulous! It was very windy and cold, but totally worth it. We had a short time to go around the port in Flam, and we went up the Stegastein viewpoint at around 2PM. Excellent driving by Steig especially at this point. He gave us two extra stops on the way home 1) another viewpoint, a bit lower with less people and 2) the quaint village of Aurland. Arrived in Bergen at 7PM, just in time for dinner at the fish market 😊"

Norway Fjord Cruise Reviews
1. best whale & wildlife cruise: fjord cruise and whale safari by catamaran from tromsø.
- Duration: 7 hours
- Departure: Harborside of Kystens Hus, Tromsø
- Departure Time: Contact tour operator
- Includes : Scenic transport via a comfortable catamaran (up to 3 hours one way), English-speaking Guide, t hermal winter suit and life jacket, h ot drinks and biscuits
Our first tour is one of the most well-rated, comprehensive tours in this area. If you’re looking to really get to know the fjords and the incredible wildlife, this one is a top contender. The Tromsø: Whale and Arctic Wildlife Cruise Safari by Catamaran is not only exciting, you’re also going to learn a ton about the area.
This 7-hour tour starts off by you meeting the crew and the rest of your group early in the day to take advantage of the daylight. Make sure to dress warm, with layers, and a waterproof outer layer just in case you get wet! We recommend warm boots with good traction, as well!
However, if you need additional layers, the crew is happy to provide you with a thermal winter suit and a life jacket for safety.
Hop onboard a comfortable, top-notch catamaran located in the Tromsø city center. This makes it easy to access, no matter where in the city you’re staying. While the fjords are generally calm, there are some rougher points in the open water that may make you consider bringing motion sickness medicine.
Experts in all kinds of weather, the crew will make sure you have a great time, even on those dark and cloudy days. They’re incredibly friendly, and once you board, will tell you what to expect on the tour and answer any questions you may have.
Enjoy some delicious hot drinks (tea and coffee) along with some freshly-baked biscuits while marveling at the gorgeous scenery surrounding you. The journey to where you’ll see whales is a bit long – 3 hours out there – so get comfortable.
Along the way, you’ll learn all about the country’s varied wildlife, fishing, aquaculture, little villages around, and weather. Not only that, but they’ll relate it to historical accounts as well, which are always interesting.
More Information & Tour Booking
100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, other experiences you may enjoy:, 2. best lunch cruise: wildlife bird fjord cruise with lunch and drinks from tromsø.
- Duration: 5 hours
- Departure: Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromsø
- Departure Time: Variety available
- Includes: Tour guide, t ransport for activity duration: sightseeing cruise, l unch, s nacks, w ater, c offee/t ea, w arm clothing, l ife vest, f ishing gear
Next up, we bring you the Tromsø: Wildlife Bird Fjord Cruise with Lunch and Drinks tour . If you’re looking for a slightly shorter tour than the one we just covered, this is a great alternative. However, they pack a lot in to this incredible excursion, where you’ll venture out onto the Arctic Sea and explore its wonders!
Meet up with the captain, crew, and rest of your group at the Scandic Ishavshotel, which is conveniently located close to just about any part of Tromsø. They’ll escort you down to the harbor to board the “Fjord Queen”.
Get that authentic Scandinavian feel by sailing in the classic mahogany boat, which is gorgeous, and comfortable. There are plenty of warm, sheltered cabins with large glass windows to see the Norwegian landscapes from.
If you’d like, you can brave the deck and take advantage of the complimentary insulated bodysuits the crew offers, as well. There’s plenty of refreshments available, such as water, coffee, and tea to keep you toasty.
They even serve lunch on board! If you’d like, don one of the complimentary life vests and check out the fishing options. They have fishing gear available for anyone to use, if that’s of interest to you.
As you cruise along, the crew will tell you all about the region’s history, wildlife, nature, water, and more. The Tromsø region is known for its birds – namely puffins, sea eagles, guillemots, and eider ducks. You may also get to see cormorants, seals, and otters!
The staff knows the best places to go to see these beautiful creatures, and even pilot whales or dolphins if you’re lucky! Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled around the shore, as there’s interesting flora and fauna, such as reindeer hanging out on land!
3. Best Value Cruise: Osterfjord, Mostraumen and Waterfall Fjord Cruise From Bergen
- Duration: 3 hours
- Departure: Meet at Fish Market, 5013 Bergen
- Includes: 3-hour round tour cruise to the beautiful Osterfjord and Mostraumen channel
Perhaps you have a packed schedule and aren’t able to fit in a longer tour that day. No worries, as there are plenty of fun fjord tours to take that are much shorter! Take the Bergen: Osterfjord, Mostraumen and Waterfall Cruise , for example!
Lasting 3 hours, it’s the perfect way to spend the morning or afternoon! You can enjoy the gorgeous landscape and be back to your hotel or lodging in time for lunch. Start out by meeting your group at the fish market for a round-trip tour to the stunning Osterfjord and Mostraument channel.
The modern boat is very comfortable, reliable, and safe. Each has plenty of space on the sundecks, and the kiosks are there to offer unlimited refreshments, like beer and wine.
If you want to get out on the water, this is a great way to do so. It’s nothing complex, but it’ll show you this magnificent UNESCO world heritage site of Bryggen in Bergen and much more.
Not only that, but you’ll be able to get away from the city hustle and bustle and just enjoy the fresh air and scenery. You’ll have plenty of time to see and learn about Bryggen before heading to Modalen, Norway’s second-smallest municipality.
On the way there, the fjord gets smaller, with steep, towering mountains looming overhead. The intense currents of the Mostraument strait are nothing to be messed with, but the captain and crew are experts at getting you there safely. They even sail right up to a waterfall!
While it looks incredible, the staff will catch a bucket-full of the chilly, fresh mountain water for all of you to try.

The almost completely flat top spans a whopping 80 meters across, which looks like it came out of some kind of science fiction blockbuster film.
Everywhere you go, your guide will tell you all kinds of interesting facts and stories about the area. You and your group will also come across sky-high waterfalls, picturesque islands, and captivating scenery. If you’re lucky, you’ll even see some local inhabitants, such as wild goats at a summer pasture!
Make sure to try the fresh, clear mountain water from the beautiful Hengjane Falls! Check out everything from the sundeck, which offers prime viewing of this legendary spot.
7. Best Dinner Cruise: Fjords Evening Buffet Cruise From Oslo

The ship alone is photo-worthy, and is everything you probably imagine when imagining the Nordic countries.

The captain expertly sails through narrow inlets and sheltered bays, so make sure you have your camera out! Passing the Bygdøy peninsula, this area is dotted with fascinating museums and beautiful beaches like Huk Bay.
The Maritime Museum has veteran sailing ships moored outside, which are so massive you can see them from your ship!
Now it’s time to sit down on one of the many benches to enjoy the mouth-watering shrimp buffet dinner! The ambiance is just perfect, and is a great date-night excursion to enjoy with a significant other. An R&B and Blues band will set the mood, offering relaxing, welcoming background music to complement the experience.
Norway Travel Guide
Norway is a land of sublime mountains, glacier-carved valleys, majestic fjords, sparkling waterfalls, and colorful villages.
It’s no surprise that many visitors come specially to admire the beautiful scenery. But Norway also boasts a rich cultural history that offers plenty for visitors to see and do.
What you personally plan to do in Norway is your choice. However, it is in your best interest to do the research before you go.
This guide was written to help prepare you for your journey to this fascinating land because we want you to have the best vacation possible.
Airports & Entry
It is possible to reach Oslo by ferry from Copenhagen or by train, bus, or car from Stockholm. However, most visitors to Norway come by airplane and land at Oslo Gardermoen Airport .
Rarely will you find so many facilities inside a transportation hub. The single terminal building at Oslo Airport is compact, quiet, clean, and offers adequate seating for waiting passengers.
The airport is open 24 hours, and that includes some food outlets. Economy passengers can purchase an airport lounge pass for additional comfort during a long stopover.
The airport designers considered all your possible needs. Across from Gate A4, you will find an ecumenical chapel for your religious needs. Between Gates C5 and C6, there is a designated Work Zone for passengers who need individual desks and power outlets to work during their stay.
The free Wi-Fi is accessed by connecting to the “AIRPORT” network and selecting “free” on the login page. If you have kids, there are multiple Children’s Play Areas throughout the terminal. Strollers are available for your use, and there are specific Breastfeeding Corners for young babies.
20 restaurants and a range of shops are found throughout the terminal, including a pharmacy for your medical needs and the largest duty-free shop in Europe.
The Information Desk is found in the Arrivals Area. And if you really want to spoil yourself and have the time to spare, the airport spa and saloon offers express 20-minute pedicures and manicures for both women and men.
The airport is 29 miles from Oslo city center, but the train station offers convenient express services into the city that take only 20 minutes with trains every 10 minutes.
You can also take trains directly from the airport station to other parts of the country. 70% of airport passengers utilize public transport rather than hiring a car or jumping in a taxi.
When you book your hotel room, ask about airport shuttle services. Many offer a courtesy shuttle service for guests. If you prefer to drive yourself from the airport, 5 major car rental companies have desks in the Arrivals Hall near the railway station.
The airport is only 3.7 miles from European Route E6 to go north or south and 1.2 miles from E16 to go east or west.
There are also regular coach services between the airport and Oslo city center. Outside the Arrivals Hall is a taxi rank. Stop at the Taxi Information Desk in the Arrivals Hall first so they can explain the fixed rates.
Planning Tips
With so many beautiful things to see and interesting things to do in Norway, I’m sure you’ll have a great time. And to help you do just that, here are 5 tips to help you make the most of your visit.
Tip #1: If you want to see the waterfalls, go in spring or summer
It snows a lot during winter in Norway. Atop the mountains and high places, the snow doesn’t begin to melt until spring. That means that through the spring and into summer, a vast amount of meltwater rushes down from those high places creating seasonal waterfalls throughout the nation, especially alongside some of the fjords.
Tip #2: Check out the SolarHam website
If you’re enthusiastic about seeing the Northern Lights, check out the SolarHam website . There you’ll find a 3-day geomagnetic forecast and a satellite map that shows the current position of the Aurora Borealis . That’s essential information for seeking the best time and place to view this amazing natural phenomenon.
It’s easiest to see the Northern Lights from September through March, when the nights are at their darkest, but avoid new moons. You won’t see the Northern Lights in Northern Norway in summer because the nights are far too short.
Tip #3: Take your time to enjoy all the attractions of Norway
Norway is an amazing country, with a long and interesting history and stunning scenery. Even if your only intention is to cruise on the fjords or to see the Northern Lights, there are other attractions that you would enjoy.
It would be a shame to visit Norway and miss seeing some of the world-famous art in Oslo, the winding railroad between Bergen and Oslo, or the Viking ships that have survived over 1,200 years.
Tip #4: Book in advance
Norway is a small country with a vast number of visitors. Don’t miss out on essential train tickets, the better hotel rooms, or specific tours you really want to take. Book in advance to ensure you get what you want before it’s fully booked.
Many tours offer refunds within a certain time frame, so check when you book. It is possible you will take little risk when booking your tour if you can simply cancel it 24 hours before it begins should you change your mind.
Tip #5: Plan road journeys in advance and with great care
The roads in Norway aren’t like the roads in other countries. With 24-hours darkness during midwinter in the far north, ice on the higher roads, winding mountain routes, and loose moose on the road, delays are always possible. When planning a long road journey, consider local conditions.
Research the route and the specific conditions of the road at the time of year when you visit. Also, keep your eye on the weather forecast for that period.
Remember that some inland, northern, and high ground roads are regularly blocked by high snowfall during winter. Check road reports regularly and allow time for unexpected delays in your journey.
Restaurants & Eating Out
Because this small nation possesses so much coastline with so many fjords, a lot of traditional dishes focus on seafood. Also, with long, dark winters, preservation was especially important in the pre-refrigeration era.
That means that pickled, dried, and salted fish can be found on traditional menus in every region.
Pickled herring is a favorite at breakfast buffets. It is often eaten on rye bread and dressed in a variety of sauces. Lutefisk is another form of preserved fish. A common variety of lutefisk is dried cod cured using a lye solution. Lutefisk is a somewhat acquired taste.
Smoked or cured salmon is found in most Norwegian restaurants or hotel buffets. And an everyday meal in Norway is fiskeboller, which is balls of white fish blended with flour, eggs, and milk.
Reindeer is a popular meat in Norway, and you’ll find it on the menu in many restaurants. It may come in the form of fillets, meatballs, or sausages. If you’ve eaten venison, you’ll probably expect it to have a gamey, beef-like taste, but it doesn’t.
It’s more tender than venison, has a milder but salty taste, and comes with a slight metallic tang. Reindeer heart is a traditional delicacy.
You may see a lot of “hotdogs” around Norway. They probably aren’t. The Norwegians have their own version of hotdogs called pølse, which are made using a different process. You’ll often find pølse wrapped in bacon and served in a bread bun much like a hotdog. Sometimes pølse are made from reindeer meat.
A thin potato pancake called lefse is popular at breakfast time. It is made from potato, eggs, butter, and sugar, and it’s served with cinnamon or jam.
You’ll often find lefse in cafes and coffee shops. Another item popular on the breakfast table is brunost, or brown cheese. It is made using a different process to other cheeses and is often served in thin slivers atop toast.
If you linger for dessert, you’ll love Norwegian waffles. They are heart-shaped, thinner than Belgian waffles, and are topped with jam or brunost.
Or perhaps you’d prefer a little fruit. In summer, berries are abundant across Norway. The most sought after is cloudberry.
Cloudberry isn’t grown commercially, so it must be foraged from the wilderness before it can be served in restaurants and cafes around Oslo.
Nightlife & Entertainment
With a population descended from Vikings, it’s no surprise to discover that the nightlife in Norway is wild. In every region, you’ll find electrifying nightclubs in the larger settlements and crowded bars everywhere.
The 4 places most identified with an active club scene and nightlife are Oslo, Bergen, Tromsø, and Stavanger.
Because Oslo is the capital, the most populous city, hosts the main university, and is the location of many of the main tourist attractions, most of the nightclubs are found there.
Lawo is a popular venue for the younger set in the nation’s capital, where the DJs spin the popular club hits. There the youth of Norway dance until they drop and drink themselves toward Valhalla. A more mature but still lively venue is Café Mono.
There you can listen to live music from a wide range of musical styles while you enjoy food and drink.
To the west, Bergen boasts a buzzing nightlife. Vaskeriet is a venue with a somewhat schizophrenic personality. Before 10 pm, it is a quiet cocktail bar, but after that, it turns into an infamous local hotspot with frequent themed events and guest DJs.
In the north, the Bardus Bar in Tromsø attempts to emulate the bistros of Southern Europe but with a strong hint of Norwegian culture and tradition.
It is especially renowned for its fine dining and lively atmosphere. And over in Stavanger, the Bar Bache is a great place to socialize through the long, long winter nights with relatively affordable drinks.
Getting Around
How you decide to get around Norway largely depends upon your timescale, your budget, and what you want to see.
If you want to go places fast, domestic flights are your best option. There are 52 public airports in Norway, an astounding number for a nation with only 5 million citizens.
SAS Scandinavian Airlines operates regular services to larger towns throughout the country. Some of the local airlines offer special pass tickets for travelers who intend to fly frequently within Norway for a specific period.
However, if you fly, you will miss a lot of spectacular scenery, and it may be more expensive than other means of transport.
Norway has a well-developed railway network with more than 1,900 miles of tracks. Many routes pass through beautiful valleys, curve around mountains, and offer panoramic views of the valleys and fjords.
The Bergen Railway is especially popular with tourists, running between Bergen and Oslo across Europe’s highest mountain plateau. Trains are slower than airplanes, but you will see much more, and they are generally more affordable than other means of transport.
If you want complete freedom, and you want to see every nook and cranny Norway has to offer, then hiring a car is your best option.
You will be able to drive along the famous National Travel Routes and stop anywhere you wish for photo opportunities and to enjoy local attractions. However, there are two problems with hiring a car in Norway.
First, navigating winding mountain roads, with blind corners, icy conditions, and in the dark is not for everybody. Second, car hire is expensive in Norway, so you’ll probably find the train cheaper.
If you decide to hire a car, please remember that the laws and conditions are different in Norway. In particular:
- Headlights must be on 24/7 and seatbelts must be worn
- You must not use your cellphone by hand while driving
- Check whether you’re getting an automatic or manual transmission when you book
- There are lots of speed cameras, and the fines are high
- Norway has super strict DUI laws — don’t drink and drive
- Moose on the road are inevitable
- Gas stations are widely spaced
Accommodations
Every year, tourists flock to Norway to visit its unique cultural and natural attractions, which means there is a wide range of hotels and other places to stay.
However, the attractions are often far apart from each other, requiring a long journey between each. For this reason, when planning a visit to Norway, think carefully about where you need to stay and for how long.
Don’t plan to spend every night of a two-week vacation in Oslo, because you’ll miss out on many natural attractions.
Similarly, don’t plan to spend every night in a hotel in the Arctic north, because you’ll miss out on the many historical and cultural attractions in the south of the country. Plan ahead and book accommodation near each place you plan to visit.
When you’ve chosen where and when you want to stay, you still must choose what kind of accommodation. The many hotels and hostels can be broken into three kinds: convenient, historic, and scenic.
Convenient hotels are those close to the attraction you want to visit and the transport hub—airport, train station, or main road.
You can find many convenient yet relatively affordable hotels throughout the country. Sadly, few will be truly cheap. Norway is an expensive country.
An example of convenient yet affordable accommodation is Hostel St. Svithun in Stavanger , which is a basic 2-star budget hotel in a central location of this popular destination in Northern Norway.
Around Norway, you will find interesting historical hotels that originally served a completely different function, like converted boathouses and farmhouses.
A particularly fascinating hotel is Oscarsborg Castle near Oslo. This fortress was in military service for 350 years until the end of the Cold War and now serves as a resort island.
If you love photo opportunities or waking to a glorious sunrise over a fjord or sunset over a harbor, a scenic hotel is for you. A great example is the modern Clarion Hotel The Edge in Tromsø that overlooks Tromsø Sound and the Arctic Cathedral.
Although the northernmost part of the nation falls within the Arctic Circle, Norway isn’t as cold as you’d expect. In fact, the name “Norway” means “the way north”.
Norway earned its name because its northern coastline is largely free from ice through winter, making it the easiest route north during the coldest months. The Gulf Stream keeps the coastline of Northern Norway warmer than other places at the same latitude.
However, there are vast variations between the different regions of Norway. Generally, the coast receives mild winters, while the inland areas experience cold winters with lots of snow but relatively hot and dry summers.
The mountainous regions remain much colder than other areas throughout the year. The south is considered the most beautiful in summer, but the fjords in spring, when melting ice leads to spectacular waterfalls.
The far north, which falls within the Arctic Circle, experiences 24-hour darkness during midwinter and 24-hour daylight during midsummer. Tromsø is the largest Norwegian town within the Arctic Circle.
Because of the extreme differences in climate from region to region within Norway, it is essential that you research the weather forecast for your specific destinations before you make plans. If you want to see the Northern Lights, 24-hours of darkness is ideal.
But if you want to sightsee, not so much. As a guideline, during summer the average daily high and low are 55 0 F and 46 0 F. In winter, 35 0 F and 27 0 F.
Maybe you think these temperatures are too cold for outdoor fun, but the Norwegians have a famous saying: “Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!” There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. Bear that in mind while packing for your vacation.
Attractions
Most visitors to Norway come to explore the stunning landscape, famous for its many fjords, snow-capped mountains, and scenic waterfalls.
The coastline of Northern Norway borders the Arctic Sea, and those interested in wildlife can observe creatures adapted to the extreme cold of the far north. The north is also a great place to observe the famous Northern Lights, especially during winter months.
If you are particularly interested in the picturesque scenery of the Norwegian landscape, the fjords and coastline to the west and the mountains of Southern Norway are served by a series of 18 highways designated as National Tourist Routes.
1,150 miles of Norway’s rural roads have been upgraded and their facilities improved to ensure that they are especially tourist-friendly. So, if you’re hiring a car, get your camera ready and check out the National Tourist Routes.
If you’re interested in Norwegian culture and history, then Oslo has it all, and the best area to visit is the Bygdøy Peninsula.
On this tiny peninsula in the west of Oslo, you’ll find the most interesting cultural attractions in the city. Top on my list is the Viking Ship Museum , where you’ll find no less than 3 genuine Viking ships recovered from 9 th -century burial mounds.
Many visitors will be drawn to the spectacular exhibits at the Norwegian Maritime Museum, which boasts several relatively modern ship exhibits along with relocated buildings and a collection of 40 oil paintings relating to Norway’s long relationship with the sea.
Other museums found on the peninsula include the Fram Museum of Polar Exploration, the Kon-Tiki Museum, the Norwegian Folk Museum , and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History.
Those more drawn to art and architecture should look east toward central Oslo and visit the iconic Oslo Opera House.
This masterpiece of modern architecture not only houses the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet plus the National Opera Theater, but it also boasts a significant modern art collection, including the famous floating steel and glass sculpture She Lies .
In the same area, you will find the Munch Museum. There are few people in the western world who would not recognize Edvard Munch’s The Scream , and here is where you can see it in person along with other examples of the artist’s work.

Our small-ship cruise, "Arctic Allure: Spitsbergen and the Midnight Sun, takes you to explore the archipelago's jagged mountains, steep-sided valleys, sheer cliffs, fjords, calving glaciers that crackle and groan, and the remains of old whaling outposts and mining camps established by Norwegians, Americans and Russians over a century ago. Keep your eyes open for some of those polar bears… as well as bearded seals, blue and white whales, Arctic foxes, and Arctic moose.
Exploring the Arctic region
Above the arctic circle, in the "land of the midnight sun".
As you cruise along the coast of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean, you'll encounter islands of glaciers, fjords, and natural "ice sculpture," revered for their silent majesty. Here, in the "Land of the Midnight Sun" (north of the Arctic Circle, where at certain times of the year the sun remains visible at the local midnight), your daily itinerary is flexible – go where the weather and movement of wildlife tell you to go, seeking Svalbard reindeer, polar bears, walruses, whales, Arctic foxes, red-throated divers, pink-footed geese, and more. Expedition naturalists accompany you throughout your voyage, enjoying a camaraderie that only Arctic explorers can share... as close as you can get to the North Pole!

Travel tips for Norway trips
There’s really no bad time to take escorted tours of Norway—the country is stunning year-round. However, if you’re hoping for warmer temperatures and a possible glimpse at the renowned midnight sun, summertime is a great season to take Norway group tours. Just keep in mind that it's a popular time to visit, so prices are higher and crowds are bigger.
The off-seasons, spring and fall, are great times to book Norway tour packages if you’re looking for fewer crowds and (hopefully) more sunny days. Snowmelt in the spring means waterfalls and rivers will be at their peak, which makes cruising along the fjords even more spectacular.
The famous northern lights can be seen when Norway’s skies are at their darkest, which is during the winter months. However, the snow, rainfall, and cloudy skies from December through February make this a less-than-ideal time to take Norway group tours. Instead, opt for Norway tour packages that depart in March or from September through October, when the skies are still relatively dark, to seek out the aurora borealis.
Of all the beautiful things to see on trips to Norway, the fjord region is one of the most spectacular. Set off on our Highlights of Scandinavia: Sweden, Norway & Denmark tour to see just what we mean! Cruising through the narrow waterways while admiring soaring mountains, cascading waterfalls, and cliffside villages like Flåm is the best way to explore this otherworldly landscape. Embark on one of our fjord region tours to get an up-close look at Norway's spectacular scenery alongside local experts.
Go beyond the fjord region to discover stunning, historic cities on Norway tours. The capital of Bergen is home a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bryggen district and city center, and you can learn about Viking history inside Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum.
One of the best things about going on Norway guided tours is digging into the cuisine. Typical meals often incorporate grains, locally-produced cheeses, fresh produce, and wild berries. Plus, thanks to an extensive coastline, there are plenty of seafood dishes for travelers to enjoy on Norway tours. Here are some of the varied dishes you can try on trips to Norway.
- Everything from smoked salmon and shellfish to pickled herring and scrod
- Lamb is the most traditional meat, but other classic Norwegian dishes also feature goose and deer
- Polse , which are boiled Norwegian hotdogs served in a thin tortilla with vegetables and sauces (they are a relatively cheap snack and are readily available in Oslo on Norway tours!)
- Open-faced sandwiches called smørbrød are also popular, and feature favorites like smoked fish, shrimp, or cheese
- Potato dumplings called kumla
- Lefse , a sweetened flatbread topped with butter, sugar, and cinnamon
No matter the season, you’re likely to experience all types of weather on escorted tours of Norway, so packing the essentials is important. Rain is not uncommon, so bringing layers is a sure way to be prepared in case the temperature changes or it starts to rain. A waterproof jacket and sturdy walking shoes are a must, and scarves comes in handy.
Scandinavians typically wear laid-back, functional clothing, and one favorite material is wool. Fit in with the locals on Norway guided tours and be ready while you're out exploring by packing a wool sweater. Norwegians also enjoy sitting outside even on chilly days; layer up and take in the local scene at outdoor cafes and beyond while on Norway small group tours.

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)
Nowadays Rotterdam is a vital part of the economy of the Netherlands. The Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in the world with a total throughput of about 300 million metric tons a year provides a solid base for industry in and around the Rotterdam area. Its population is about 575000, which makes it one of the largest cities in the Netherlands, but the number of people that work in the Rotterdam area or are otherwise economically dependent of it exceeds that number by far. The density of population is among the highest in the Netherlands, exceeding 4000 per square kilometer. Shipping, storage and forwarding are of course among the most important activities in the region, but the port of Rotterdam has also created a large chemical industry, which is fully dependent upon the transport facilities for the inflow of crude oil and the shipping of the various refined end products. Large petrochemical plants have sprung up, especially on the south bank of the Maas. These plants are in operation 24 hours a day. The development of Europoort ('Euro gate') started in 1957. A large complex of ports and industrial areas was created between Rotterdam and the entry to the North Sea. When more space was needed, the Maasvlakte ('Maas Flats') was created. By means of dikes, dams and sand deposits the coast line was altered to include many square kilometers of newly created land, where the Petroleum Harbors, container terminals, ore terminals and the Maasvlakte power plant are located. An interesting feature is the 'disaster area', a training complex where fire brigades train to cope with large-scale industrial accidents. The complex includes a grounded tanker that is set on fire several times a day. The name Europoort suggests that Rotterdam wanted to become the gateway to Europe. By 1963 this suggestion had become outdated, because in that year Rotterdam could claim to be the largest port in the world, a record that it still holds. In fact, the Berge Stahl, a 365000 ton ore carrier, is fully dependent on the port of Rotterdam, since this is the only port on the European continent that this ship (with its 23m/75ft draught) can access. After the flood in 1953 a large project was initiated to prevent such floodings in the future. This project, the 'Delta plan', involved stronger and higher dikes and numerous flood barriers. The latest of those flood barriers to be completed was the storm surge barrier in the Nieuwe Waterweg near Hoek van Holland. Two enormous doors mounted on swing arms can be used to close off the Nieuwe Waterweg, should storm and high water require so in order to protect the country from flooding. Normally the doors are open, so as not to impede the flow of ships through the Nieuwe Waterweg. Building and development have become a way of life for Rotterdam. The city has continued to grow, and it shows no signs of slowing down. And although this constant increase of population, urbanization and development all breed their own problems, Rotterdam is ready for the next millennium. As the economic heart of the Netherlands, with a population heading towards 600000, it had better be ready.
The beautiful village of Eidfjord is situated at the mouth of the Ejo River at the head of the Eifjord, an arm of the great Hardangerfjord. Behind the village there are gravel and sand terraces which are 9000 year old deposits left behind when the great inland ice melted and retreated. Possibly one of Norway's best known waterfalls, the Vosingfoss, plunges into the Mabodal Canyon from the brink of the Hardanger plateau.
Hardangerfjord
Hardanger is a name that Norwegians associate with blossom and fruit. In truth the orchard of Norway! Who would believe that you can grow apples, pears, plums and even cherries at 60° north? A mild and pleasant climate and clear, light summer nights are ideal for our guests, as well as for fruit and berries. In the centre of the district is the Hardangerfjord. High up you enter the Hardangervidda National Park and two of Norway’s largest glaciers, Folgefonna and Hardangerjokulen. From mountains and glaciers the majestic waterfalls foam down into the queen of fjords. This is Hardanger - a mixture of cold and warm, wilderness and quiet idylls, of old traditions and modern times!
Alesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, as documented at the Jugendstilsenteret museum. There are panoramic views of Ålesund’s architecture, the surrounding archipelago and fjords from the Mount Aksla lookout.
Trondheim, or Nidaros as it used to be called, was the first capital of Norway. The Sagas tell us how King Olav Tryggvason of Viking fame founded the city by the mouth of the River Nidelva in 997. Today Trondheim is a modern city, a centre of knowledge with a highly respected university, many popular colleges and a research community ranking among the best in Europe. You will find a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities in Trondheim. Here you can experience both the charm and intimacy of the small town and the plethora of choices of big-city life. While in Trondheim, you might want to visit Lerkendal, Trondheim’s football stadium, where many a mighty European football team has fallen to the powerful perennial contender in the Champions League - Rosenborg Ballklub. You will find the people of Trondheim friendly and sociable. Trondheim is a very hospitable city, with its doors open wide to the world.
Stranda is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is part of the Sunnmøre region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Stranda. Stranda consists of three smaller villages and one larger central village. The smaller villages are Hellesylt, Geiranger, and Liabygda.
On the shores of the Nordfjord, little Olden is a gateway to a spectacular ice wilderness of stunning dimensions. Climb an amazing zig-zag road past towering cliffs and tumbling waterfalls to the giant Jostedal glacier--the largest icefield in Europe, where summer skiers zip over ice moguls! Or take a horse-drawn carriage to a beautiful lake watered by the blue ice massif of Briksdal Glacier.
Stavanger, the oil capital of Norway, is actually a medieval city. Although it didn't gain city status until 1125 when construction of the beautiful medieval cathedral began, the area has been populated for over 10,000 years. The city is an exciting combination of old and new. Narrow lanes and white timber houses are all in well preserved traditional style, from classic style to funkis. It is a modern city with a wide variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. Contrast characterises this city, the people who live there, the surrounding landscape - and the weather! All this makes Stavanger a pleasant and very charming city. Stavanger is also the centre of higher education in Rogaland county. It has a number of cultural institutions including international, British and French schools because of the great influx of foreigners connected to the oil industry and to the "Emigration Centre for Genealogical Studies and Contact Between Norway and North America". The Canning Museum is the only one of its kind in the world and testifies to what has been an important industry for Stavanger. Among the many other attractions are the theatre and the symphonic orchestra that has its home in the beautifully situated Kulturhuset.
Situated at the head of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the oldest Scandinavian capital, and features a charming mix of old and new architecture, together with acclaimed museums, parks and monuments, making it a relaxing and rewarding holiday destination. The highlight of a visit to Oslo is the 13th century medieval Akershus Fortress, featuring creepy dungeons with dark, damp cells, magnificent banquet halls and ornate staterooms, and a charming chapel which contains the crypts of King Hĺkon VII and Olav V. It was used by the Nazis during WW II as a prison and place of execution but is now occupied by the Norway Resistance Museum, which has a variety of exhibits of Norwegian life under German occupation. The grounds surrounding the fortress are perfect for picnics and relaxation, and afford spectacular views of the city and harbor. Norway is famous for its artists, and two of them are celebrated in museums in Oslo. The Munch Museum contains a collection of more than 5000 drawings and paintings by Norway's most famous artist. Munch's most famous painting, The Scream, resides in the National Gallery. Nearby, Vigeland Museum and Park showcases the works of the renowned sculptor Gustav Vigeland amid a beautiful expanse of trees, grass, and ponds. Another artistic attraction is the National Theatre, with its superb rococo hall. Oslo has plenty of luxurious accommodations, excellent restaurants and charming cafes. The nightlife is numerous and varied, with bars, clubs and pubs to suit all tastes. A rewarding excursion can be made to the nearby Bygdřy Peninsula, located across the harbour from Oslo. It features a large open-air folk museum, maritime museums housing excavated Viking ships and Thor Heyerdahl's balsa raft Kon-Tiki; restored stave churches; and some pretty beaches. Further afield is the Nordmarka, a wilderness area on Oslo's northern border, and the quaint fishing village of Risor, with its picturesque harbour and island of Stangholmen. International airlines link Oslo with most major European cities, and transportation options into the city are numerous and reliable
The waters of the Oslofjord to the south and the forested hills of the Nordmarka inland to the north are immensely popular for everything from boating and hiking to skiing, and on all but the shortest of stays there's ample opportunity to join in. The island beaches just offshore in the Oslofjord and the open forest and ski jumps at Holmenkollen are obvious targets, both within easy reach by ferry or underground train. Oslo curves round the northernmost point of the Oslofjord, which extends for some 100km from the Skagerrak, the choppy channel separating Norway and Sweden from Denmark. As Norwegian fjords go, Oslofjord is not particularly beautiful, but amongst a string of workaday industrial settlements is Norway's only surviving fortified town, Fredrikstad, with its angular bastions and grid-iron of late sixteenth-century streets; it's best visited as a day-trip by train from the capital. Dover is one of the most-visited towns in England but most of the 13 million people who travel to Dover each year are bound for one of the many ferries, catamarans or hydrofoils that cross the English Channel (more properly called the Dover Straits) to North-West France. A small number of travellers actually stop in the town and enjoy the 'Dover hospitality' that is on offer. There is information on these pages for people travelling into Dover by road/rail/cycle and for those wanting to take a ferry to France, including Port & Ferry News. Drivers will see very little of Dover itself as they enter on either the A20 from the South or the A2 from the North-West. In both cases, the roads arrive at the Harbour, where they join. The whole of Dover's town stretches inland from the Harbour and continues along three valleys into the Kent countryside. Dover is at one end of the North Downs and has several ranges of hills, two of which have fortresses dating from the medieval and Roman eras, as well as more modern (19th Century) times. Behind the town centre are the modern-day barracks, Dover's past and current commitments to the country have always included more than can be seen under the famous White Cliffs. Modern-day Dover has a mixed economy but is still very-heavily dependant on the ferry industry. Other major employers include: the Ministry of Defence (at Connaught Barracks), numerous freight companies, vehicle sellers & repairers! The history of Dover is best covered in the many books and videos on the subject (available, of course, at the town's Museum!).
