'Longlegs' movie will haunt your nightmares and 'hijack your subconscious,' critics say

hansem travel reviews

The reviews are in and the critics agree unanimously: "Longlegs" is absolutely terrifying.

Neon's horror thriller film, starring Nicolas Cage as an unstable rural dollmaker and Maika Monroe as a young FBI agent, had its red carpet premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on Tuesday.

Fans in attendance were each gifted a red 45" vinyl covered in "Longlegs Cipher," but left the theater too scared to play the soundtrack.

"Longlegs" is the latest film from actor and screenwriter Osg o od "Oz" Perkins , who is also the son of Anthony Perkins, the star of Alfred Hitchcock’s "Psycho. "

The film follows FBI agent Lee Harker (Monroe) as she tackles an unsolved serial killer case plaguing her small Pacific Northwest town, and takes an unexpected, supernatural turn as she discovers a personal connection to the occult killer.

Here's what critics are saying about "Longlegs."

'Longlegs' will 'hijack your subconscious,' critics say

Critics are calling "Longlegs" a true horror film, with Peter Debruge of Variety writing that it can "hijack your subconscious:" "Less than 12 hours after seeing it, the demented Nicolas Cage character resurfaced in my nightmares."

David Ehrlich of Indie Wire shared a similar sentiment in his review: "Terrifying in the abstract even as it grows increasingly absurd to watch, 'Longlegs' slinks its way into that liminal space between childhood nightmares and grown-up practicalities."

The H o llywood Reporter calls "Longlegs" Perkins' "most fully realized and relentlessly effective film to date," despite concerns that he may "stir too many elements into the mix here."

Neon has used strategic marketing to convey the horror level of this film, releasing a teaser stating that "the first time Maika Monroe saw Nicolas Cage as Longlegs, her heart rate hit 170 bpm."

One user replied , "the marketing for this film (is) so good i’m actually getting worried."

"Longlegs" stars Blair Underwood as Agent Carter and Alicia Witt as Ruth Harker, Lee Harker's ultra-religious mother. The ensemble cast includes Michelle Choi Lee, Dakota Daulby, Lauren Acala, Kieran Shipka, and Maila Hosie.

Comedian Bill Maher cancels Milwaukee show citing travel problems

hansem travel reviews

Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher said on X he is canceling his Sunday night show in Milwaukee.

"It's not going to happen tonight, I can tell you," Maher said in a video posted to the social media site . "First they said it's going to be impossible to get to the theater because downtown (Milwaukee) is going to be closed off for security reasons."

Maher said he wanted to "go to Milwaukee anyway and maybe things will change. I hate to cancel shows." He added that the few times he's canceled a gig was because of a plane issue or weather.

"Well, you know what, the plane broke again," Maher said.

Maher is currently in Minneapolis and tried to get a commercial flight but "that was not possible."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"I'm so sorry but I'm not going to make the show tonight in Milwaukee. It breaks my heart," Maher said. "I was really looking forward to it, we'd do anything to be there but I just can't fight this."

Maher was to perform at the Riverside Theater. The theater's website said his show was "postponed due to mechanical issues with the artist's plane."

Maher, host of "Real Time With Bill Maher" on HBO, was to appear as part of his "The WTF? Tour." In an interview with the Journal Sentinel last week , Maher said he was looking forward to the Milwaukee show as an opportunity to bring people together.

In the video with Maher was a man he said was the captain of the plane "to testify because I know there are a lot of conspiracy theorists out there."

The man Maher called "Steve," who was dressed in pilot attire, validated "everything he just said," referring to Maher.

Maher concluded with a joke to fans saying "you probably couldn't have gone to the show anyway. So I guess the show is not meant to be."

Maher asked for his fans forgiveness.

"I'll see you again, Milwaukee," Maher said. "Love you."

'The Daily Show' cancels a week of shows in Milwaukee

Earlier Sunday, "The Daily Show" canceled its plans to come to Milwaukee for the 2024 Republican National Convention.

The  Comedy Central news/satire show had planned to bring most of its crew to Milwaukee  to do shows Monday through Thursday, taped in front of an audience at the Marcus Performing Arts Center. The week of shows was to be capped by a show, with Jon Stewart as host, to be taped live immediately following Trump's expected acceptance speech Thursday night.

The Daily Show" sent ticketholders an email saying it was off and canceling their tickets.

"Our apologies for the inconvenience, but due to logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee, we will not broadcast from Wisconsin this week," the email read.

More than 3 million pass through US airport security in a day for the first time as travel surges

Image

A traveler walks through the departure area as airline catering workers who are employed by Gate Gourmet picket with their supporters, calling for a new union contract with raises and affordable health insurance, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Miami International Airport in Miami. A long Fourth of July holiday weekend is expected to create new travel records. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky)

  • Copy Link copied

More than 3 million people passed through U.S. airport security on Sunday, the first time that number of passengers have been screened in a single day as travel surges , according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

The record, which was widely predicted to happen at some point over the July Four holiday weekend, topped the June 23 mark of more than 2.99 million screened passengers. Eight of the 10 busiest days in TSA’s history have come this year as the number of travelers tops pre-pandemic levels.

TSA was created after the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and replaced a collection of private security companies that were hired by airlines. The agency operates under the Department of Homeland Security, which said that agents on Sunday checked 35 passengers every second.

While Americans continue to grapple with inflation, travel costs including airline tickets and hotel prices have eased significantly from a year ago. Hotel rooms were 1.2% cheaper in May compared with a year ago, according to recent government inflation data. Those costs have been trending lower since the beginning of the year.

While most U.S. airlines lost money in the first quarter — traditionally the weakest time of year for travel — they were all expecting a summer of full planes.

Image

This spring, American and Southwest said they expected solid second quarter profits. They joined Delta Air Lines and United Airlines in giving an upbeat outlook for the April-through-June period, which includes the start of peak season for carriers.

Delta reports its second-quarter earnings on Thursday, with analysts predicting sales of $15.5 billion, nearly $1 billion more than the same period a year ago. Next week, United and American issue their quarterly results, with Wall Street forecasting higher revenue from a year ago for both carriers.

Increasingly full planes since the pandemic shut travel down four years ago has brought some downside for airlines: complaints .

The Transportation Department said last week that it received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023, up from about 86,000 the year before. The department said there were so many complaints that it took until July to sort through the filings and compile the figures.

That’s the highest number of complaints about airlines since 2020, when airlines were slow to give customers refunds after the coronavirus pandemic shut down air travel.

The Transportation Department said the increase in complaints was partly the result of more travelers knowing about their rights and the ability to file a complaint. Airlines receive many more complaints from travelers who don’t know how or don’t bother to complain to the government, but the carriers don’t release those numbers.

My Lash Extensions Last Almost a Month With This Serum

hansem travel reviews

This story first appeared on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, in  The Strategist Beauty Brief ,  a weekly newsletter in which our beauty writers share their must-tries, can-skips, and can’t-live-withouts. But we liked it so much we wanted to share it with all of our readers. If you want more first impressions of buzzy launches, quick takes on what’s trending on TikTok and Instagram, and deep dives into the week’s best beauty launches, sign up  here .  The Strategist Beauty Brief  is delivered every Wednesday.

I have very oily skin, eyelids, and lashes. So when I get lash extensions, I get less than two weeks of peak fluttering fullness. Around day 10, I start finding lashes everywhere: on pillowcases and in my sheets. In the sink and nestled in the cotton fibers of my bath mat. Because I get so little longevity, I stopped doing lashes altogether for about three years. It seemed like a waste of time and money.

But, this summer, because it’s so hot, and really just because I’m trying to be cute, I decided to give them a try again. I told myself I’d be the model lash-extensions wearer: I would keep them dry for 24 hours, I’d sleep on my back, I wouldn’t rub my perpetually itchy eyes.

Envious Lashes Protective Coating

The first time I got extensions back in late March, I failed at all the above, of course. But I did start using  Envious Lashes Protective Coating , a serum that’s supposed to help your extensions stick around, developed by my favorite lash artist  Clementina Richardson , owner of  Envious Lashes . It’s a clear sealant made of biotin and vitamin E that you brush on with a spoolie. Clementina suggested it because she’s familiar with my history of premature lash fallout. She said to apply it twice a day, morning and before bedtime — I definitely didn’t hit 100 percent compliance, but I got it right most of the time.

I started to notice a difference around day nine, when I realized I hadn’t seen any errant lashes on my cheeks or on my desk. At week three, that first set was at about half fullness. This is huge for me — by week three, my lashes are typically very sparse, with just a few stragglers hanging on in the middle of my lash line.

So far, I’ve tested the serum on three sets of lashes and the results are consistent: I’m getting about an extra week of near-full flutter. I asked Clementina what the secret is and she said the formula protects the glue used to adhere the lashes from skin oils and moisture. “It’s kind of like a nail-polish topcoat — a topcoat for glue.”

Since the longevity of my lashes is so abysmal without sealant, I can’t guarantee the results will be as dramatic for folks whose lash extensions have a regular lifespan. But the serum is only $20, so I think it’s really worth a try. I won’t do lash extensions anymore without it.

The Best Prime Day Deals on Travel and Luggage Gear I Swear By

Christine Ryan

By Christine Ryan and Wirecutter Deals Team

Christine Ryan is an editor overseeing coverage of travel and outdoors gear, which has entailed testing down-filled vests in Iceland in June.

As Wirecutter’s senior editor overseeing travel-gear reviews, I know all too well that, for most people, summer travel rarely involves jetting off to glamorous destinations with a fancy aluminum Rimowa trunk in tow .

In fact, I write this as I recover from a four-day road trip from California to Calgary, sharing an EV with two dear friends, their adorable toddler, and two large, fluffy, equally adorable dogs.

I brought no fancy luggage—just a carry-on backpack roomy enough to hold my clothes, squishable enough to wedge into the overpacked frunk, and comfortable enough to wear while I waited in a seemingly endless TSA line. (I flew home!)

Here at Wirecutter, we see a lot of seemingly helpful but actually useless travel paraphernalia for sale, meant to appeal to anxious travelers braced for any eventuality.

What we actually recommend—after months of testing on trips like the one I just took—is the luggage, bags, and other gear that will truly make your journeys easier. The carry-on backpack I used, for instance.

I can’t promise that this particular bag will be on sale during Prime Day , but I can promise that all of the deals listed below are for things that we’ve tested, that we use ourselves, and that we stand by.

An Amazon Prime account may be required to secure the deal prices below.

What we like: Our budget waterproof camera pick that we also include in our guide to the best beach and surf gear. A good option for people who prize a lower price over best-in-class image quality—colors can be off sometimes, but are typically okay in natural light.

Other things to know: Waterproof to around 46 feet; drop-proof to about 5 feet. It can’t capture video in 4K, and lacks Wi-Fi to transfer images to a smartphone.

Democratic lawmakers seek criminal investigation of Justice Thomas

Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Ron Wyden want a special counsel to investigate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for possible tax and ethics violations.

hansem travel reviews

Two Democratic U.S. senators announced Tuesday that they are seeking a criminal investigation of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over gifts of travel, a loan for a recreational vehicle and other benefits he received from wealthy benefactors.

Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Ron Wyden (D.-Ore.) said they sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland last week requesting he appoint a special counsel to probe whether Thomas violated ethics, false statement and tax laws.

The action marks a significant escalation in efforts by Democratic senators to address ethics controversies related to Thomas and the court in recent years. Whitehouse’s staff said it was likely the first time anyone had requested a special counsel investigate a Supreme Court justice. Whitehouse sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, while Wyden chairs the Senate Finance Committee.

Jeremy Fogel, a former federal judge and executive director of the Berkeley Judicial Institute, said the Justice Department has the legal authority to appoint a special counsel to investigate Thomas, but whether it would is another matter. “Inevitably it would be seen as political retribution for rulings the justices made that they don’t like,” he said. “I just don’t know how you get out of that box.”

The Justice Department declined to comment on the request.

Supreme Court 2024 major cases

hansem travel reviews

Special counsels are generally appointed when the attorney general wants to assure the public that a sensitive investigation will be conducted fairly and free from political considerations; Garland has appointed three special counsels during his tenure, to oversee investigations involving former president Donald Trump , President Biden and the president’s son, Hunter Biden.

“We do not make this request lightly,” Whitehouse and Wyden said in a statement. “The evidence assembled thus far plainly suggests that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have complied with their federal tax obligations.”

Thomas and his attorney, Elliot S. Berke, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but Berke has said previously that Thomas tried to comply with financial disclosures of gifts and travel as they existed at the time.

“Justice Thomas has always strived for full transparency and adherence to the law, including with respect to what personal travel needed to be reported,” Berke said in a statement last year. He described any failures to disclose travel as “strictly inadvertent.”

Whitehouse and Wyden said they wanted a special counsel to examine a $267,000 loan Thomas used to purchase a luxury motor coach in 1999 , adding that they have not received adequate answers from Thomas about how he handled the matter. An investigation by the Senate Finance Committee concluded a substantial portion of the loan from Thomas’s friend and businessman, Anthony Welters, was forgiven in 2008. The committee found Thomas failed to report the loan on his financial disclosure forms, raising questions about whether he reported it as income on his taxes as required by law.

Thomas has not previously commented publicly on the loan, but Welters told The Washington Post last year that he believed Thomas had “satisfied the loan.”

The senators also want the special counsel to investigate multiple instances of jet travel, yacht trips, home renovations, tuition, luxury sports tickets, lodging and other gifts that Thomas did not disclose on his annual financial forms. The gifts were reported in a series of articles by ProPublica last year. Many of the items were paid for by Harlan Crow, the Texas billionaire, Thomas friend and major Republican donor.

In addition, the senators want the special counsel to probe $25,000 in consulting fees that were directed to Thomas’s wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, by conservative judicial activist, Leonard Leo. The payment was first disclosed by The Washington Post last May. Some ethics experts said it raised questions about whether Thomas should have recused himself from certain cases. Neither Clarence nor Ginni Thomas responded to requests for comment about the payment at the time.

The failure to disclose the gifts and payments may have violated a federal law requiring government officials to disclose gifts, loans and other benefits, Whitehouse and Wyden said. They also want to know if Thomas’s benefactors paid gift taxes, and whether Leo’s payment to Ginni Thomas was part of a coordinated gift program or required any additional disclosures by the justice.

Last month, Whitehouse and Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) asked the officials with the U.S. Judicial Conference, which oversees judicial ethics issues, to explain how they were handling the disclosures about Thomas. They have yet to receive an answer. The lawmakers had previously asked the conference to refer Thomas to the Justice Department for potential ethics violations.

The Senate Judiciary Committee revealed last month that Thomas took three flights paid for by Crow between 2017 and 2021 that he did not disclose. Berke said Thomas was not required to disclose the travel because it happened before the high court clarified its own ethics rules to specify that free travel must be reported as a gift. Thomas reported three trips on Crow’s jet during 2022, after the policy change.

The justice also revised his 2019 financial disclosures last month to reflect lodging and other expenses paid for by Crow during trips to Bali and a club in California.

This Portable Charger Duo Is the First Item We Added to Our Amazon Prime Day Cart — at Just $18

With more than 76,000 five-star ratings, you can score a single charger for $9.

hansem travel reviews

Travel + Leisure

Travel veterans know the importance of having a reliable portable charger on hand while traveling — it only takes one long layover or missed flight to prove how essential a charger really is. While many popular portable charger models don’t quite have enough juice to power more than a phone or two, the popular Amazon Miady two pack is in a league of its own. Boasting a long battery life that’s capable of quickly charging multiple devices at once, it’s unsurprising that these ultraslim portable chargers have amassed more than 76,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. Best of all, the duo is currently 18 percent off and $18 for Amazon Prime Day — that’s just $9 per each charger.

As an international traveler and writer , these portable chargers are always part of my travel arsenal, especially for long-haul flights or when I have multiple layovers. This two pack has accompanied me across the globe, from Iceland and Ireland to Italy and India. Roughly the same size as an Apple iPhone, they're slim and lightweight enough to slide into a crossbody bag or even a pocket, so they’re always within easy reach when I’m on the go.

These chargers each pack a power capacity of 10,0000 milliamp hours, which equates roughly up to two full smartphone recharges or 11 wireless earphone charges — seriously, I’ve had one of these portable chargers juice up my Apple AirPods Pro within an hour or two, an effort which hardly seemed to put a dent in its power capacity. (They each have four LED lights which show you their remaining charge).

Miady 2-pack Portable Charger

Each charger has two output USB-A ports, one micro-USB input port, as well as one dual USB-C input and output port. I’ve noticed that each charger can be fully charged within five hours, which is well worth it for their long battery life. I’ve used these portable chargers to power up everything from my Apple iPhone and AirPods to my Fujifilm camera batteries and Amazon Fire tablet — sometimes all at once. This makes them especially handy when traveling with my boyfriend or family, as they tend to cut down on any arguments regarding who gets the charger next.

But don’t just take it from me. After all, this popular duo has amassed more than 76,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, which is impressive even by the online retail giant’s standards. One customer raves that they’re a “must-buy for travel,” adding that they used the duo on their recent trip to Italy and “didn’t have to charge it once for my weeklong trip! … I kept it in my purse the whole trip. It is thin and lightweight!” Another customer praises the charging capacity, writing that the portable chargers “recharge fast and really put out the power” before adding that they “charge my cell phone three times faster than a wall plug.”

Ahead of your summer plans, add the Miady two pack to your list of travel staples, so you can stay connected no matter where you go or how far you travel. Its budget-friendly price of $18, or $9 for each charger, will hardly dip too far into your travel budget. Don’t wait too long, though: Amazon Prime Day officially begins Tuesday, July 16 and ends Wednesday, July 17, so you’ll want to add this duo to your cart while sales last.

At the time of publishing, the price was $18.

Stressful experience with the foreign health insurance but eventually resolved

I had Swisscare with ERV previously and switched to HanseMerkur. The experience so far has been really stressful for me :/. I have been trying to contact someone for more than a month to arrange for payment for a surgery and was not able to reach anyone. It is now only a few days before the surgery, and I am stuck potentially paying the entire bill out of my own pocket. The customer service people were friendly and maybe they are just overworked or understaffed but this has really been a bad experience and I regret switching from ERV :/. Update 18.06.2024: I just want to mention some good news. It seemed there was a miscommunication between the hospital and the clinic which caused this stressful delay. As I mentioned before, I had no issue with the staff (the issue was just the communication and being able to reach someone in general, which still remains my only criticism now as it is really challenging to reach someone on the phone still). The staff member processed my claim thoroughly. Now I think the issue is hopefully resolved and I am satisfied with the outcome.

User-friendly, fast, effective

We unfortunately needed to cancel our 3-week family trip to Asia due to medical reasons. The process with HanseMerkur travel cancellation insurance was seamless from start to finish. We could enter all details about the trip, the reasons, etc. via a guided online tool. There I could also upload all the necessary receipts. I expected the process to be lengthy with all kinds of questions, however, within a week (!) I heard back that my claim had been processed and they have wired me the money. I must say that I was very diligent in uploading all the documents and also preparing a nice overview of all costs and cancellations, which probably made there job easer. But still, I am very impressed by the user friendliness, the speed and the professional execution of my claim.

Customer service can be improved

Worst customer service ever. I sent them a bill 2 month ago, and an email to ask for the status 1.5 month later. Got no answer. I have been trying to call since then. Today they finally answered the phone (0: my 3rd attempt ttoday)Then they put me on hold. I have now been on hold for 80 minutes. Great. Update: I have re-sent you all the information you requested by email to your trustpilot address yesterday. Will be happy to share if some positive outcome comes out of this. Update 2: My issue was swiftly solved, thank you!

I can only suggest to take this insurance….

I have unfortunately observed that this insurance got a bad reviews. I must however confirm that my hundred percent experience with this insurance has been excellent. I have two running insurances, the numbers as follows: 803906016 802918713 Starting from creating the insurance, understanding the contracts, as well as in case of trouble contacting the people the whole experience has been until now excellent all the time. The service has been friendly, which is not self understood as usual working with different insurances. I have many experiences with different companies , but this one has been excellent.

Hanse Merkur Health, very bad

I have been health insured at Hanse Merkur since February. I am covered in dental and health insurance. Very poor service. Several bills were declined, so I had to call to confirm, some were then payed out, some not. The latest dental cleaning one was declined as well, then revised to be payed. Waiting for the refund for the 3rd week now. My high blood pressure medication was declined despite being payed out correctly in previous instances. The call center people are at least trying to be helpful, but generally a very poor system.

Travel insurance not recommendable

I've had the travel insurance from Hanse Merkur (young travellers) since 2021. Sometimes it took them a while, but eventually they responded and covered the medical expenses guaranteed by the insurance. Ever since I've renewed the contract this year, however, my experience with them has been very bad. They don't check my damage reports at all, but just flat out reject it, claiming it is a medical check-up even though it is a treatment (and as such should be covered). I've been trying to get an answer from them for months, providing them with all the necessary information over and over again, without any success. I would not recommend them.

Bad customer service

Got a long term travel insurance from HanseMerkur. Gladly had to use it only one time so far with no issues. Had to go to a hospital again, a month ago. Sent them the bill right away at the same day. They state in their policy that a refund can take up to two weeks. After that time I contacted them again and asked for the state of my request. That was again two weeks ago and haven’t heard from them since. One month without reply is very bad customer service.

1 Year and no reimbursement

I have made a claim, in December 2022, against my medical bill from abroad. The company still says that they need to confirm with the practitioner in the treatment country. It has been nearly one year but they are only making excuses not to pay my bills. Verena from the Hanshand overSocial-Media-Team promised me 2 time (in April 2023 and August 2023) that I will get reimbursement soon but only empty promises. Stay away from this company it’s a big headache

I wish I had stick to my old insurance

I wish I had stick to my old insurance I had Swisscare international students insurance for 3 years. I was perfectly happy with them and in December 2023 I got an offer where I could switch to HM insurance. The offer sounded great so I did. However now I regret it. With Swisscare the claims were processed within 2 weeks and I got my reimbursement back the following week. With HM it take AGES to get your claim processed and one of my claim was completely lost. I sent the claim a month ago and still did not hear a thing. It is hard to contact them, hard to get answers and emails often end up in spam. The sheer fact that I have to remind and follow up on my claims is bizarre. If not for the fact that I am soon graduating I would switch back to Swisscare.

Where is Customer Support?

Why is it so difficult to reach someone from Customer Support? Recurring emails, calls, all without success to get basic things answered. Getting kicked out automatically trying to get a hold of someone by phone whilst not offering a waiting list seems a bit weird no ('everyone is busy, try later - bye')?!

Happy customer, keep it up guys

Used the expat insurance for the max. duration possible and sad I can't extend any longer. All my claims (except. a CPAP I required after diagnosed with medium-severe case of sleep apnea) have been covered without second guessing or any troubles. If I move back to Germany and decide to go abroad again, I will choose HM again!

Worst insurance ever!!

Worst insurance ever!!! How I regret changing from public to private. I pay almost 300eur a month for this insurance and every time I go to the doctor I have to pay for everything myself. I submitted so many medical bills for 2023, bills from the Hausärzte, and blood work that I have to do often because of my autoimmune disease and they paid for NOTHING! then what is the point of having this insurance???

Just thankful

Before my trip I had to get an insurance. I chose the yearly abroad insurance for 17 Euro. I forgot to cancel it after my trip, but then I flew to South Africa where I got very sick and had to go to the hospital. To my amazemnt, Hanse Mekrur covered ALL the cost. It was more then 600 Euro. For the 17 Euro insurance which I forgot to cancell. I will be forever grateful and can only recommend the insurance company.

I am customer of HanseMerkur since…

I am customer of HanseMerkur since 2021. HanseMerkur clearing bills is super Annoying. They dont clear fee bills untill you follow up a lot, they dont give proper acknowledgements in the process of clearing bills. Support is very rude for Expats as their english support is bare minimal. You to wait many hours or days to speak with english rep. Cost wise HanseMerkur is pretty decent and also they provide discount if you are healthy. Thanks god TrustPilot is helping in such situations.
