Dual Batteries for Super Duty

I have a 99 with V10 and K&N air filter. I want to run dual batteries but not sure where to put the second battery. I have a huge canister (not sure what it does) where I would like to put the battery. Can someone who has done this post some pics of what they did. That would be very helpfull. Thanks

Ford had a dual battery option for your truck, so you can just buy the parts from them if you want.

These guys sell a kit: http://http://www.wranglernw.com/ProductPickerResults.aspx?year=2006&make=1&model=60&engine=46&option=0&itemtype=11 Cheap too.

But seriously, here's a link to an install another member here did: http://http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/415979-f250-dual-battery-info-here.html

Am having the same problem in doing so in my 5.4. Supposedly there is a superduty kit but I cant figure where the heck it would be able to go. No room.

I will get you guys some good pics of my dual batt setup on my superduty tomorrow.

Yeah I seen that on that site but I don't want to do that. I'm affraid that with all the salt and sand around here it would corrode it. Also I go out in the woods to cut wood and would hate for a limb to sneak up there and wipe out my battery.. I would prefer to keep it under the hood where it belongs.

Thanks for the pics. Yours is a diesel correct? You don't have that canister do you? Your's came stock from Ford like that, right?

that looks like a stock ford powerstroke setup i know theres an intake kit manufacturere afe i think that sells and intake kit with a place to put a second battery right on it. the little canister is probably a vaccum setup for something on the truck and could probably be relocated

correct...factory setup.

Round cylinder is carbon canister, fuel/emmision part, tied in to vacume system, yes it needs to be relocated not eliminated.

Any suggestions to where to relocate it to.

Hey sefh, did you ever figure out where or how to mount the second battery. I have that same dopey canister in the way. I have a 2003 F-350 with the 5.4 and have been wanting to run dual batteries for a few years now. Wrangler NW has a tray kit w/wires ($420.00) and a great diagram showing where to put it..........except they forgot to mention the garbage can sized canister thats in the way.

I ended up taking that canister out. I capped the hoses that connected to it. I have not had a problem (engine light or performance) after I did it. I made a mount that used the canister bolt pattern. I found some 1 1/2 flat stock and bend them to fit the area. I'll get some pics soon and post how I did it.

So it must be something for a V10? Or you have it with a 5.4 but different location? I don't know whatit's for but it runs fine without it.

Excursion Dual Alternator Kit

Excursion Dual Alternator Kit I was advised that I should install a second alternator, based on my planned mods. I seem to recall that there was an issue doing this with excursions, but I am seeing kits available on the market. '01 - '04 Ford Excursion Dual Alternator Kit DUAL ALTERNATOR MOUNTING KIT WITH BOLT TENSIONER Does any one have experience with dual alternators in Excursions? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit I don't think there was ever an option for a stock dual setup on the Excursion, which means aftermarket. It you are going aftermarket, why don't you just buy a good quality aftermarket high-output alternator? There has been lots of posts on that one on the various forums. Personally, after seeing the compact and complicated guts of mine at 100,000 miles needing to be rebuilt and the high costs involved, next go around that is what I will do. http://www.alternatorparts.com/dual_rectifier_big_ford.htm http://www.ceniehoff.com/products/altSeries.asp?volt=14&amp=300A http://www.wranglernw.com/ And throw some big Caps on that amp. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Certainly, a bigger alternator is an option. But, the system I am looking to create would have an *isolated*, 3rd [deep cycle] battery to run my accessories. As I understand it, the second alternator creates a secondary [separate] charging system, that would eliminate the need for altering the stock system with an isolation device. A very reputable auto electric shop suggested this... This would also seem to create a certain amount of redundancy - if you burn your secondary alternator out running accessories, you still have the main one to get you home. Maybe you could even rig the secondary as a back-up if the main goes out? I don't know... This appears to be what the X limo's are going with, and they are running lots of goodies. So, I'm still curious whether it is even a practical option to go with one of these dual alternator kits, or whether there are hidden drawbacks. Anyone done one? Thanks, -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Ok, lets run with the dual/separate system for just a moment: If it is truly a separate system, if your primary alternator dies, you better hope you brought some wrenches with you to swap their locations. Otherwise, you would have to have some sort of switching setup that I'm not sure exists, assuming you really are going to run a 3rd separate battery. I would also highly recomend you look into the price of purchasing a new alternator outright, plus the cost of what it will take to rebuild yours when you hit 100,000 miles and compare the combined cost to the price of one of the monster sized units. I have not personally done that math, but I know that the stock ones are spendy...and so are rebuilds when you are stuck 2,500 miles from home like I was. The guy that rebuilt mine in Soldotna, Alaska was top notch and more than a hundred bucks cheaper than a rebuilt one from the parts store. I think he charged me $220... I also got to watch the whole process and pick his brain for a little info: It seems that prolonged idling is harder than hell on an alternator, and the ones in cop cars and the like tend to last 35,000 to 85,000 miles max. Same for having a big stereo, lots of aux lights and whatever extra power draws you wire in. There is one big fat expensive part that wears out and has to be replaced inside the case. Plus bearings. Just food for thought. There is so much garbage hanging on the front of the engine already that I personally would try to avoid a second alternator. I also don't like the idea of anything electronic being any closer to the exhaust manifold than is absolutely necessary. Just food for thought. Ultimately, I too would like to have more power on tap, but I have other things to tend to first...head gaskets, tranny...etc.

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit It is not looking like a realistic option at this point anyway... I can't find one example of a dual alt in a 7.3 X. Those units I found appear to be for gassers anyway. It would be a shoe-horn job, requiring pinching the IC tube if I could find the right bracket. I do like the concept of 2 though, but it looks like I will be going with 1 big one and an isolator. Thanks for the feedback. -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit The 7.3L equipped Ambulances came with duals. If I remember correctly, you would have to swap out computers as well because the computer controls the alternator...

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit My dad has an f350 with the dual alts. I looked at his and mine and dont see any differences except the extra alt. unless the computer is different, but I have know way of knowing that.

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Well, the "one big one" didn't exactly bolt on, so I cancelled that plan... But I discovered that WranglerNW *does* have a dual alt. kit for PSD excursions. It is on the way, and I will post the results when I get it on. We'll see if it really is "bolt on" and go. -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Update... Well this turned out interesting... I did my very best to find a dual alternator set-up for my Excursion... I searched the Internet, I posted questions here, I went to the dealer - no one had any info for me. I then called Wrangler, who said they had a solution. With the lack of any evidence that any 7.3 Excursions are running dual alternators, I thought Wrangler had put together a custom kit. The $625. dual alternator bracket kit arrived from Wrangler [late], and the first thing you notice is that it's all stock Ford parts. The next thing I noticed was that it had the wrong belt. So, I went back to the dealer, who identified all the part numbers for the "kit" - full retail was about $200. They actually tripled the retail price./ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Anyway, I returned the kit to Wrangler, who is no doubt going to hit me with a "restocking fee". So, I bolted the $200. kit right on, along with a 200 amp alternator. Thinking about one of the earlier posts, I decided to wire the new alternator so that if the primary one goes out, I can light up the main system by simply putting in a 200 amp fuse - pretty slick... Oh, and the second alternator isn't controlled by the computer - it's the perfect, isolated second charging system that can also act as a back up. While we were at it, I mounted a 3rd battery [a yellow-top] on a custom bracket back on the frame with a auto-resetting breaker etc... To top it off, I found a digital dash-mount multi-meter gauge, at the boat store that shows amps and volts, and even has alarms. Overkill? Maybe not... The only catch right now, is that when I load the 2nd alt up, the belt starts squealing, and looks like it's going to come off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif I posted to another section of the forum on this, and am looking into solutions to tighten it up, like a shorter belt, bigger idlers, or a new tensioner. I am open for suggestions, or sources of short belts and big idlers. If anyone is interested in the secret parts list to add a second alternator to an Excursion, let me know... -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Any idea if this set up works with the 6.0?

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit [ QUOTE ] Any idea if this set up works with the 6.0? [/ QUOTE ] Yes looks like dual 130 amp alternators are an opton on 05 SD so I would say yes! Bruce

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit How about sharing the parts list with us? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif ...danny

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Here ya go... Bracket - F8TZ10A313AA Belt - JK81381 Bolts [x8] - N606068S437 Stud - W701844S309 The upper radiator hose that is listed as being for the dual alt. set-up is a very nice item that should be stock - It would allow you to change the serp. belt on the road without pulling the UR hose - I recommend it. It's PN F81Z8260CA Now, I have a favor to ask... Could someone please put a torque wrench on the tensioner and let me know what a good one is at? I *think* mine is OK, and don't want to throw another $100 at it to find out. Thanks! -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit OK, on the tensioner... when I put the torque wrench on it, I get about 37 lbs. when it starts to move. Is this normal tension for an idler? Also, I noticed that it pulsates/moves a bit about once per revolution of the belt. Do I need a new one? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif Thanks, -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Sounds like you worked out the details! Congrats! As for the tensioner, there was someone on one of the forums that put on a dual idler tensioner. You might want to look that up. The fuse between to separate the systems is a great idea.

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit Well, the new tensioner is the same tension [37 lbs.] as the old one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Shorter belts are not available /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Larger idlers do not appear to be available /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I couldn't find anything on dual tensioners... Someone has got to have a creative solution here. Anyone? -cDub

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit HmMm, have you tried taking your belt to Autozone? Or Napa? Napa might be a better choice since they carry parts for more vehicles, including alot of diesels. Ask them if you can go to the back and then you could match belts whether than have the parts guy "look it up" in their computer and say to you, "Ughhhh, no we dont have anything like that derrrr..." There has to be a belt out there that's shorter than the one you have now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif I know V-belts are a no brainer, but there has to be good number of serp. belts that you can compare to...Good luck!

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit I suggest you post a question on the 7.3 upgrades and aftermarket forum and ask who built one. I just saw it in someone's signature last week. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Re: Excursion Dual Alternator Kit I posted there, and it was moved to the "Upgrades and Aftermarket - General", where the thread continues... Dual alternators/Belt tension issue Thanks for all the input. -cDub

Dual Battery Kit

  • $315 00 $315.00 Unit price /  per

We regret to inform you that the kits for the 78-96 Broncos are no longer available.  The 66-77 Bronco kits are still available.  We are working with the vendor to try to come up with a solution to continue offering these.  However, at this time we are no longer selling kits for the 78-96 trucks.  Our apologies for the bad news.  We will update this in the future with any new information.

These dual battery kits are a full featured, very high quality kit designed for all generations of Ford Broncos and F-Series trucks. They allow for the installation of dual group 65 or Optima style batteries in place of the single battery tray. It is all inclusive with the highest quality brackets and wiring.

Wrangler Power has a long history of being the best in quality power management systems. The wiring and battery manager switch allows you to start the vehicle with only the main battery, or switch to dual battery for extra starting power should the main battery be weak. It further allows isolation of the two batteries should one be bad. Yet it also charges both batteries when the truck is running. The kit includes a dual battery tray kit, high quality 200AMP isolation relay and cable kit and battery manager switch assembly.

Canadian, I would recommend spending a little more and finding yourself a battery isolator vice using the solenoid. While the solenoid will provide the necessary isolation, I also find that it creates more hassles than it fixes. The last dual setup I did, I think it cost us a whole $100 plus the cost of the two batteries. But then, I also fabricated up a mount from scratch and I made all of my own cables (easy to do as long as you know how to crimp on large lugs).

  • Nov 23, 2012

I don't see how the soleniod will cause any hassle ??? If it stopped working I would still have power, plus I like the idea of being able to chose which battery is being charged or if I need to boost myself. The soleniod seems heavy duty.......

  1. Let's see your DUAL BATTERY setups on a V10

For the ground, it needs to be done a bit different. Run the ground line from the FIRST battery to the second battery and THEN to ground. This creates a balanced charge/draw setup and prevents the batteries from trying to charge/discharge each other from a uneven draw/charge. Important tip, thanks. Reply Like.
