When is The Best Time to Cruise to Norway? Seasons, Price, Weather and More

If you are considering a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords you may be wondering when is the best time to visit.

I have cruised to Norway many times and during this post, we will explore the best time to visit with regard to weather, price, and availability.

norway norwegian fjords cruise ship view

When is The Best Time to Cruise to The Norwegian Fjords?

The best time to cruise to Norway is in July or August.

Alternatives include the “shoulder” seasons – May, June, and September which can often be much cheaper but still provide good weather.

Norwegian Fjords cruises do happen year-round although the choice of cruise lines is dramatically less outside of the summer season.

Norwegian Fjords Cruise Calendar

Norway Stavanger

Should You Cruise to Norway in Winter?

  • Good for: Northern Lights, Fewer Crowds
  • Bad for: Variety of Cruise Lines, Day Light Hours

Hurtigruten is a Norwegian cruise line that offers cruises consistently to the Norwegian Fjords year-round.

In January, February, and March, Hurtigruten cruises head in search of the Northern Lights.

The Northern Lights Promise

Who Are Hurtigruten?

Hurtigruten are an expedition cruise line that focuses on cruises to Norway and Antarctica.

They are heavily focused on the destinations and provide lots of interesting excursions.

The ships were originally designed to transport mail (and still do) as a result you won’t see all of the amenities that you’d find on new British or American cruise ships.

Hurtigruten does welcome cruisers of all ages but they don’t have kids clubs or entertainment onboard for children.

Hurtigruten offer a “Free cruise guarantee” if you don’t see the Northern Lights on your sailing

Northern Lights Promise For those who have your heart set on witnessing the swirling glow of the aurora borealis, we make you a promise no one can match: If the Northern Lights do not occur within sight of your ship during your voyage, we will give you a 6-day southbound or 7-day northbound Original Coastal Express Classic Voyage FREE OF CHARGE*. * terms and conditions apply Hurtigruten

Other cruise lines do offer Northern Lights sailings. I took one of these Northern Lights sailings with the British cruise line, Fred Olsen .

Find out all about that memorable cruise here:

Other Cruise Lines

Other cruise lines do cruise the Norwegian Fjord during this time but they tend to be few and far between.

It may be possible to find a Norwegian Fjords cruise with Saga , Viking or Fred Olsen during the winter months.

norwegian cruise in july

Daylight Hours

It is worth remembering that in Norway in the winter the days are extremely short.

In places like Tromso the sun never actually rises above the horizon.

Even in places lower down like Oslo, they only experience around 6 hours of daylight in January.

Norway Stavanger

Should You Cruise to Norway in Spring?

  • Good for: Price
  • Bad for: Weather

The Norwegian Fjords really begin to wake up in April and May.

The number of cruise lines available increases dramatically.

Cruise lines such as Celebrity, Holland America, Cunard, MSC , and Princess arrive on the scene.

Cruises in the spring can be much cheaper than later on in the season – so if you want to grab yourself a bargain this can be a good time to do so.

The UK Easter holidays can briefly increase the cruise prices, but in May the prices usually reduce again.

Norwegian Fjords Rain in June

What Is The Weather Like in Norway During April and May?

It is likely to be relatively cold with an average temperature for May of 12c (53f). Norway does have a lot of rainfall so you should always make sure you pack a coat.

The weather in the spring can be unpredictable. That said, the weather at any time of year can be unpredictable in the Norwegian Fjords!

I wouldn’t let this put you off cruising at this time of year though, I cruised to the Norwegian Fjords at the end of June and still had rain every day. It is just luck of the draw.

I took a cruise to Norway onboard Anthem of the Seas. Find out all about that trip below:

To find out how to make the most of your Norwegian Fjord cruise, even in the rain, make sure you read this post:

Norwegian Fjords Cruise 32 Tips

Should You Cruise to Norway in Summer?

  • Good for: Weather
  • Bad for: Price

This is by far the peak season for Norwegian Fjords cruises.

Prices peak in late July and August during the school holidays.

The Norwegian Fjords are a very popular destination for family cruises because many depart from the UK and only take a week or two.

What Is The Weather Like in Norway During June, July, and August?

This is the warmest part of the year. The average temperature in July is around 20c (68f), temperatures can on occasion reach 30c (86f) although this is not common.

I took a Norwegian Fjords cruise in late June with P&O Cruises. Despite it being the warmest time of the year it rained, every single, day.

If you are from the UK this might not come as a surprise. The weather in Norway is comparable to that of the summer in the UK.

Rather annoyingly the week before I took my Norwegian Fjords cruise Norway experienced a heatwave and had temperatures of 30c+!

Norway Cruise Pros

Finding The Midnight Sun:

At this time of the year, Norway experiences long days.

In some parts of Norway like Tromso in the Arctic Circle, the sun doesn’t actually set at all in summer.

I took a cruise with Viking in August which was called “In Pursuit of The Midnight Sun” which was wonderful. It was daylight most of the time.

If you are somebody who doesn’t sleep very well with daylight outside it may be worth booking an inside cabin if cruising to Norway in summer.

I could sleep anywhere so this doesn’t affect me but I know a few people who struggle to sleep with any light coming in around the curtains!

To learn more about the midnight sun and what it is like to cruise into in, check out this post:

Viking Sea, Into The Midnight Sun.

Cruises Are Relaxing Midnight Sun Viking Sea

Should You Cruise to Norway in Autumn/Fall?

  • Good for: Price, Autumnal Colours
  • Bad for: Weather, Variety of Cruise Lines

The weather gets a little bit more temperamental into September and October.

Most cruise lines have left the Norwegian Fjords by October so there are very limited options.

Cruises which still go to the Norwegian Fjords at this time tend to do so as part of a longer cruise.

What Is The Weather Like in Norway During September and October?

The average temperature is 13c (55f) in September, falling in 7c (44f) in October.

Storms are more likely at this time of year which may mean an increase in ports being cancelled or itineraries amended.

I’ve been on many cruises where my itinerary has been changed, sometimes this happens months in advance but sometimes only a day or a few hours ahead of the visit.

To find out more about why this can happen and what you can do about it, check out this post:

Do You Get Compensation For Missed Cruise Ports?

Should You Cruise to Norway in November or December?

  • Good for: Northern Lights
  • Bad for: Variety of Cruise lines, Weather

I personally would say that this time of the year is the worst time to visit the Norwegian Fjords.

Your chances of seeing the Northern Lights do increase as you get further in December and January but November doesn’t really have any redeeming features. Of course, this is just my opinion. ..

I usually love cruising in November because it is cheap but prices don’t really drop in the Norwegian Fjords at this time as there are so few options.

What Is The Weather Like in Norway During November and December?

In November the average temperature is 0c (32f) and this drops to -7c (19f) in December.

Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Norway Cruise Itineraries

Embark on an unforgettable cruise to Norway aboard Celebrity Silhouette or Celebrity Reflection. Sailing from May to August, our Norwegian fjord cruises last anywhere from seven nights to nine nights. Longer itineraries give you the chance to see towns like the mountainous Flam or the remote Geiranger. norwegian cruise in july

Even if you’ve cruised before, Norway is a whole different animal: the weather is finicky at best and there’s a good chance you’ll fly a low-cost airline to get to your starting and ending ports, where every pound of baggage costs you.  That’s why I’ve compiled the perfect Norway cruise packing list for you.  It fits in a carry-on, yet has everything you need for a week onboard (or more, if you can wash things out in the sink or send it out for laundry).

What to Wear in Norway

When the weather changes in an instant, you’ll want to be prepared for everything from sun to rain or even snow — yup, I encountered snow in Norway on my June vacation although only because I roadtripped into the mountains!

snowpack in the mountains of geiranger norway

Thankfully, sporty wear is common all throughout Norway (with the exception of Oslo).  You’ll find function over fashion and as long as you’re somewhat neat and put together, there’s no issue wearing something casual.

If you retain nothing else from this Norway packing list, just remember this one thing: choose clothing made out of synthetic material instead of cotton.  It dries quicker for those sporadic rains, wicks moisture during hikes, and keeps you warmer for the temperatures at these higher latitudes.

The Perfect Norway Outfit

I start with a short-sleeve top, which is cool enough to stay comfortable in the midday sun or when you work up a sweat hiking, kayaking, or biking.  I like  Columbia Polo Shirts because the collar makes your outfit instantly look a little more put together, but you still get the performance of high-quality polyester.  [ SHOP WOMENS | SHOP MENS ]

I layer that with a  lightweight fleece jacket .  It’s cool in the morning, evening, and when you’re on the water — or just on the cool days that come around every so often.  Any brand will do, and if you don’t already have one at home, the Amazon Basics brand is surprisingly decent considering its low price. [ SHOP WOMENS | SHOP MENS ]

On the bottom, I always recommend long pants rather than shorts, ideally something made out of nylon or another synthetic material.  I’m obsessed with the Prana Pants I got last year — they move and stretch beautifully for hiking, but look nice enough that you can pull them off as real pants in restaurants or back onboard the cruise ship. [ SHOP WOMENS  “Halle” | SHOP MENS “Hendrixton”]

For all cool or damp destinations, I always recommend paying special attention to your feet.

smartwool socks

A one-time investment in the right socks will protect you from blisters and keep you comfortable if/when your feet get cold and wet.  These days, I *only* travel with merino wool socks .  My personal favorite is the Smartwool brand because it’s not scratchy at all.  Yes, it’s expensive.  Yes, it’s worth it (plus it lasts forever, unlike cotton socks!).  [ SHOP SMARTWOOL ]

Do you need a winter coat on a Norway cruise? You’ll notice I don’t have a lot of cold weather gear on this list.  That’s because most Norway cruises are May – September, when the weather is mild and not super chilly.  On some days, it’s indisputably warm! Warm and sunny on my Pulpit Rock hike In Oslo, you can expect daytime temperatures of 60-75° Farenheit (15-24°C); further north in Alesund, it’s more like 50-60°F (other typical ports like Bergen, Stavanger, Geiranger, and Flam are in-between).  Mornings and evenings will be cooler, but it’s still summer and not freezing! That said, a hat and gloves are small and can easily fit in any suitcase for those “better safe than sorry” moments. Three scenarios for when you might want some extra layers: If you’re from a warm climate and are not used to cool-ish days If your Norwegian cruise takes you farther north to the Arctic Circle If you’re traveling in winter, early spring, or late fall Want specific recommendations on base layers?  Check out my winter packing tips  (opens in new window to read afterward).

What to Wear Onboard Your Norway Cruise

Although dress codes vary by cruise line ( check yours !), generally speaking, Norway cruises are so active and tiring that guests stay pretty casual onboard.

On deck, for watching scenery, you’ll want to wear the same thing you’d wear outside in port.  I found it could be a little breezy as the ship was sailing, especially on higher decks, so you’ll definitely want a jacket or sweater (a hairband is also useful).  The good news is you can always duck inside if you need to warm up or grab another layer.

waterfall as seen from cruise ship deck

For informal nights at dinner, you can get by wearing your polo shirt and Prana pants, which saves you space packing.  Pack a nice sweater to layer with it, since the air conditioning can be intense on some ships.

Hint: wear the  next day’s  outfit at dinner so that it won’t be sweaty from a day’s worth of activities.  Since you’re only wearing it for a few hours, it should be fine to re-wear on your next day’s adventures.  Just hang it up after dinner to air out for the morning!

On formal nights, most guests don’t glitz up the way they used to.  Men, a dress shirt and slacks is adequate (a jacket and tie are optional on most ships).  Ladies, I love Betabrand’s reversible dresses so you can get two totally different outfits while only packing one wrinkle-free dress… get $15 off your order with my referral bonus .

All the Clothing You’ll Need for a Norway Cruise

  • 7 Tops — ideally 5 short-sleeve, 1 tank, and 1 long-sleeve (change the tank to an extra long-sleeve in early or late season)
  • 2 Sweaters  — one casual fleece, one nicer sweater or cardigan for dinner
  • 3 Pants  — ideally 1 pair of my favorite Pranas, 1 pair of zip-offs for warm days, 1 pair of rainproof pants
  • 1 Formal Outfit  — yes, it’s okay to wear the same thing twice!
  • 1 Rainjacket  — the very best one you have
  • 1 Set of Base Layers (Long Underwear & Top)  — most people can skip this
  • 2 Pairs of Shoes  — hiking shoes/sneakers for touring and a pair of nicer shoes for dinner onboard
  • 7 Pairs of Underwear  — and 2 or 3 bras for the ladies
  • 7 Pairs of Socks
  • 1 Bathing Suit  — because the ship’s hot tub feels really good after an active day

Some Other Things You’ll Need on Your Norway Cruise Packing List

Sunglasses :  The sun reflects off the fjords and other bodies of water, so these are a must-have!

The Perfect Day Bag:  I swear by my Matador day bag — it holds just the right amount of stuff and when they say it’s waterproof, they really mean it.

matador daylite backpack

Reusable Water Bottle:  Norwegian tap water is safe to drink, so do the environment a favor and skip bottled water (not to mention, you’ll save on costs, which are sky-high in Norway!).  I also was thankful for my reusable travel mug, to drink hot tea on deck during scenic sails.

Sleep Mask:  Ever hear of the midnight sun?  It makes it hard to sleep, so you’ll want an eye mask to block out light unless you’ve booked an inside cabin.

International Adapter:  Not sure what type of outlets are in your cruise cabin?  No problem if you have a universal adapter (which can also be handy in your European hotel rooms).  Choose one with built-in USB outlets to charge multiple items simultaneously.

Ginger Chews:  Ironically, you probably won’t get seasick on your ship — most of the fjords you’re sailing through are relatively protected.  However, if you’re taking day trips on smaller boats or if you’re roadtripping through twisty mountain roads, these ginger chews can help with nausea without making you drowsy like pills do.

Other Norway  Tips

I’ve got tons of other resources to help fill in the blanks.

Are Packing Cubes Worth It?

If you’re not used to packing carry-on only, one of my secret weapons is using packing cubes.  For one thing, they compress some air out which means you can fit more things in the same space.  Additionally, packing cubes can keep your things organized — which is a big help in tiny cruise cabins.

Staying Comfortable on Overnight Flights

Get my complete list of essentials for in-flight comfort.  Some of it overlaps with what you’ll need in Norway (like an eye mask and water bottle) although some of it is just for the plane.

With a little pruning, I believe you have an excellent list. Ditch 5 shirts, formal outfit, 3 underwear, conditioner, soap, deodorant, aloe, cream, salves, ear plugs, camera and charger and all optional items (except hat/gloves/pen) and you’ll have all you need! Perhaps add some waterproof trousers if you intend to do any hiking.

@Fran, That’s a little too minimalist for me (I prefer not to do laundry while traveling whenever possible) but I’m glad you’ve got a list that works for you!

Ditto Becky. Your packing list sounds about right. I’m going to Iceland in August and I’ll probably take 3 pants/5 shirts for hiking and a few additional clothes for onboard the ship — black pants and sweater, 2 long sleeve knit dresses for dinner and some joggers/hoodies.

Norway cruise in June WHAT TO PACK

Cool Cruiser

let's go cruising

I am getting excited about our upcoming Norway cruise for June. We are starting to think about what we should be packing. We've only ever cruised in the Caribbean or Mediterranean during the summer. I don't know how much cold/hot weather we should plan for. Advice and ideas?

Start with a Google search of weather for a couple of your ports. For example, "Bergen June weather".

Sea42

June Weather in Bergen Norway. Daily high temperatures increase by 3°F, from 58°F to 61°F, rarely falling below 50°F or exceeding 70°F. Daily low temperatures increase by 4°F, from 45°F to 49°F, rarely falling below 39°F or exceeding 54°F.

From https://en.visitbergen.com/things-to-do/tours/fjord-tours/weather-in-the-norwegian-fjords, summer - plan for both sun and rain.

  • The coastal areas of Norway are known for frequent precipitation. That does not mean you need to bring a Sou’wester (although their yellow raincoat counterparts are quite trendy!), but a good quality raincoat is a must.
  • While we do recommend bringing a comfy sweater and a light wind jacket for the occasional breeze, summer in Bergen tends to offer temperatures pleasant enough even for a dip in the sea.
  • Don’t forget non-wearables! With light clothing items such as shorts, skirts and t-shirts being your regular packing must-haves, a good camera might be what you’d appreciate the most.
  • Leave your crocs at home – if you’re planning on going hiking to see the fjords, you need a pair of sturdy, yet comfortable hiking boots.

Sea42 is answering your question very well, however in addition to it being Norway in June, it is also necessary that you state where in Norway.  There is a very big difference between Bergen, Tromsø and Honningsvåg.  The right clothes are important - layers of clothing and expect it to rain.  Still Snow in the mountains. I have seen many cruise guests who have packed a suitcase for a Caribbean cruise - it does not quite fit in Norway.

Agree about a good quality rain jacket! The weather in Norway lived up to its reputation when we did our cruise at the beginning of July. I have never seen rain like it, the day we were in Bergen ( that’s saying something as we’re from Scotland) but we didn’t let it spoil our fun. Saying that, we had beautiful weather in Alesund , which was my favourite port. We did a hike and most of the locals were in shorts. I’d say it was in low 60’s. Temperature is relative - if you normally live somewhere quite hot, you won’t need shorts in Norway. While we thought the temperatures were pleasant and similar to our Scottish summer, there were Americans on our cruise in winter coats and woolly hats. To summarise weather is unpredictable from day to day but waterproof shoes, rain jacket and quick dry trousers are essential. Enjoy your cruise, Norway is amazing.

On my Land of the Midnight Sun cruise in June 2019 the prior weather forecast was for cool temperatures (mid teens C°) and rain. We packed layers, gloves, beanies and a good rain jacket. Our weather turned out to be mostly fine with only a couple of overcast days with occasional light rain in Tromso and Lofoten Islands. We had sunny days elsewhere and at Geiranger and Trondheim were in T'shirts in the middle of the day. We only wore our gloves and beanies once when at North Cape and used our rain jackets more for the wind which was a bit brisk at times. Layers were the key to cover all eventualities so we could add or subtract depending on the weather which could be very changeable throughout the day. It was also quite cool in the early mornings when on deck to watch the sail in to the fjords.

I wrote a lengthy post yesterday, but it did not post. It was marked "hidden" and would need to be reviewed. I have no idea why. I've never had any issues with any of my posts.

It is GONE now, so everything I typed is lost.

This post went through fine.

That can happen because some word or words in your post, or something you may have named, automatically triggered a review. Usually the post is innocuous and will be approved. Sorry you lost your work!

I honestly have no idea. I said what ports we were going to and what we would be doing.

I feel like I'm getting a handle on what to wear off the ship and even during the day. We have a travel trailer and camp in State/National Parks, so Norway is right up our alley. We love birding. In fact, in early May we will be spending a couple of weeks camping/birding along Lake Erie in Northwest Ohio . That should prepare us for what to wear in Norway in June.

HOWEVER, What are people's thoughts/experiences on evening wear?

We (56F and 58M) are interested in packing light (like Rick Steves) because we will have so many transfers in England. Has anyone packed like that for a cruise? Dinner clothes in the Caribbean wouldn't be so daunting because we have cruised there many times. We've never cruised in a cold(er) climate.

I LOVE thinking about and planning travel.

You still need to list the ports you call at to get the best guidelines - large differences between Bergen, Tromsø or Honningsvåg in June.

Thank you - this is in the southern part of Norway. Layers of clothing is the answer to your question - rain and windproof outer layers - it can be cold in the morning when you are on the upper decks to follow the entrance through the deep fjords or into the mountains.  Expect 50% days of rain - but it can be periods of mostly rain or mostly sun.  The temperature will be between 55 ° F to 59 ° F rarely below 50 ° F or exceed 70 ° F  Sunrise is around 4:00 am and sunset 11:30 pm - varies 30 minutes depending on time of month.

The best time to cruise to alaska in 2024.

Plan your bucket list adventure to explore the extraordinary beauty of the 49th state.

The Best Time to Cruise to Alaska

Alaska's astounding beauty and vast wilderness are unlike any other destination in the U.S. – and even in the world. While you can plan land-based trips to the state, many of Alaska's majestic snowcapped mountains, pristine forests, glacial waterways and abundant wildlife are in remote locations, only reachable by plane or by boat. That's just one of the many reasons why Alaska is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world.

If you're ready to stop dreaming and start planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land, here are tips on the best times to cruise Alaska.

Best Overall Time: Shoulder Seasons

Best time for warmer weather, best time for wildlife viewing, best time for salmon fishing, best time for the northern lights, best time for shore excursions.

View of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay from the side of a cruise ship.

If you want to score a deal and have fewer crowds, travel during the shoulder seasons: May and September. In these months, cruise fares are typically lower and ships are not as full, offering more cabin availability. However, with changes in the global climate bringing more moderate temperatures to Alaska, and the cruise season now extending into April and October, cruisers can also expect to find deals in April and October. There will be fewer sailings to choose from, but you may find lower pricing and avoid the peak-season crowds on the ship and in the ports.

In addition, select shore excursions may be available at a discount in the spring and fall. If you're planning on exploring Alaska on your own before or after your cruise, you'll also find cheaper hotel rates at the beginning or end of the cruise season.

Alaska's weather can change dramatically, especially the further north you go, no matter the month or season. While the weather may not be as predictable in April as in the middle of summer, Alaska can be beautiful in springtime with temperatures in the mid-40s, according to Tyler Hickman, senior vice president of Icy Strait Point, an Alaska Native-owned port in Hoonah and a port of call in Southeast Alaska. Hickman says there are long stretches of sunny days and crisp, clear evenings, offering the opportunity for late-season viewing of the northern lights . He also adds that April is one of the favorite times of year for local Alaskans.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska in April, Norwegian Cruise Line has a few options, including weekly sailings on Norwegian Bliss beginning April 6. The line also offers Alaska itineraries through the end of October. Other lines sailing the extended season in Alaska in late April include Princess Cruises , Holland America Line , Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise Line , UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions.

If you prefer to travel in the fall, early October temperatures are usually in the 50s, while the end of the month brings snow in the higher elevations. The days are longer and there are no crowds, so it may be an ideal time to visit if you're not interested in the summer outdoor experiences. Norwegian, Holland America and Seabourn Cruise Line offer sailings in October.

If you'd prefer warmer weather for your cruise, the summer season in Alaska runs from mid-May to mid-September. During that period, daytime temperatures typically range from 60 to 80 degrees, though they can drop into the 40s overnight. You can expect to have between 16 to 24 hours of daylight in the warmer season. May is considered the driest month, with around a 25% chance of precipitation, but the rain becomes more frequent throughout the summer.

Alaska.org, a website run by local Alaskans that provides travel information and recommendations, advises that the best time to visit in summer is from June 15 to July 15. This 30-day period is regarded as the peak season for warm, dry weather – and it's the perfect time for outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing and hiking. If you want to experience the most "midnight sun," plan to cruise a few weeks before or after the summer solstice – the longest day of the year – which falls on June 20 in 2024.

Come September, the days are generally shorter, rainier and cooler – but not always. You might get lucky with some unseasonably warm days amid the beautiful fall foliage ; as a bonus, September also means no bugs and fewer crowds.

If you have school-age children, you'll probably need to travel midsummer, during peak season. However, if you're flexible on dates, there's really no bad time to visit this magical destination. Mountain peaks shrouded in clouds or misty days cruising Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in late April are as beautiful as sunny days hiking through Tongass National Forest or whale watching on an excursion out of Icy Strait Point in July.

Orca breaching in Seward, Alaska.

According to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, one of the top destinations on the Inside Passage itinerary, wildlife viewing is possible year-round, especially if you have your binoculars at hand. When you're not watching for turquoise ice calving in the bay from the glaciers, you might see humpback whales as long as 65 feet or black and brown bears up to 10 feet tall – as well as orcas, harbor and Dall's porpoises, sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, sea lions, seabirds, and bald eagles soaring overhead. And that's just what you can view from the ship.

During cruises through the park, rangers board the ships to offer commentary and information about the marine and terrestrial wildlife. They also help spot whales or other animals along the way. One of the highlights while cruising slowly through the park is to go outside on the bow of the ship – or even out onto your veranda – to listen to the incredible silence of this otherworldly place. You may hear nothing at all, or perhaps you'll be treated to the sounds of birds in the distance or the swoosh from a whale's blowhole before it dives down below the water's surface.

It's possible to view certain animals and marine life throughout the year, according to Hickman. "Whale sightings are consistent from May through September, with fewer occurring in April and October as they migrate from or to Hawaii for the winter," he says, adding: "Even on a foggy day when you can't see the whales, you can still hear them and feel their presence – and that's almost as incredible as seeing them from a ship or along the coastline."

If you're interested in spotting brown bears, here is Hickman's advice: "Bear sightings in the spring will depend on the snowpack and when they are leaving hibernation. This year we had very good bear viewing along the Spasski River starting in May when the coastal brown bears emerged from hibernation."

He adds, "They feed on the grass of the valley and eat skunk cabbage roots in May and early June. As the berries start to emerge in June, it holds many of the same bears, and as we get into mid-July, the salmon start heading upstream. There is a constant food source from May through September at Spasski. Many of the other bear viewing areas do not have the same features we have, and it leads to people thinking that bears are only around when fish are in the rivers."

Chichagof Island – the location of Hoonah and Icy Strait Point – was given the nickname "Bear Island" by National Geographic. The island boasts one to two brown bears per square mile, making it one of the largest brown bear populations in the world. Hickman says you're nearly guaranteed to see bears on one of Icy Strait Point's bear-watching tours. Icy Point Strait also offers whale watching adventures and other treks into the wilderness.

Alaska.org points to May through September as the best time for wildlife viewing, though you can spot some animals year-round, like moose or orcas. The website also advises that fly-in bear viewing starts in May but is at its best in July.

Alaska Brown Bear fishing for Sockeye Salmon at Brooks River and Waterfalls, Katmai National Park, Alaska.

If you are an avid angler – or just want to watch the bears fish for their supper – then visit Alaska during the peak salmon runs, from May to September. King salmon season begins in May and goes through the end of July. The silver salmon run lasts from July up until the end of November. Red salmon are available between mid-June and mid-August, while you can catch pink and chum salmon in the brief window from mid-July to mid-August.

If you prefer halibut or just want to get out on the ocean, the best time for this wild Pacific species is from May to September. You can also seek out many other river and ocean species, such as rainbow trout, arctic char and northern pike. Cruise lines offer fishing excursions, or you can arrange for a private or group charter in an Alaskan town like Ketchikan.

If you want to see brown bears during the salmon run, book a bear-viewing excursion in one of the ports, such as Icy Strait Point. Or, extend your trip by combining a visit to Katmai National Park and Preserve and the renowned Brooks River with a stay at Brooks Lodge. Brooks Falls is the site for iconic photos of bears catching salmon that are jumping over the falls, and you may be able to view the bears feasting in salmon season when the property is open, from June through mid-September. The lodge is accessible by floatplane from King Salmon. You can also add a flyover tour during your stay to see the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, an area in southern Alaska transformed by ash from the 1912 Novarupta-Katmai volcanic eruption.

Northern lights above Alaskan mountains.

Aurora season – the best time to see the northern lights in Alaska – runs from mid-August to mid-April. While some passengers cruising the Inside Passage may catch a glimpse of the phenomenon in late summer and early fall, it's not guaranteed. As southeast Alaska typically has more precipitation and clouds since it's a temperate rainforest, you likely won't find optimal conditions for aurora viewing here.

Your chances to see the lights are better the further north you go, so you may want to look at booking a cruisetour: a land and sea package that's usually offered by some of the major cruise lines from May through September. These combined trips generally include the cruise, overnight accommodations in lodges, railway journeys and motorcoach travel between destinations.

With these tours, you'll be able to visit the vast landscape of Alaska, where you can explore cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks or spend time in Denali National Park and Preserve – and you'll have a better chance to view the northern lights. Lines that offer cruisetours include Norwegian, Celebrity Cruises , Holland America, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

Since 2024 is projected to be one of the best years to view the aurora borealis in Alaska, you might want to extend your trip to venture above the Arctic Circle or into Alaska's interior for a prime viewing opportunity. Fairbanks and the Arctic region are under the auroral oval, which is where the northern lights activity is concentrated. You can watch the forecast for the aurora borealis online at Explore Fairbanks' Aurora Tracker and the Geophysical Institute's Aurora Forecast .

Aerial of Ketchikan, Alaska, on a sunny day.

Some of the excursions offered on an Alaskan cruise may be the most expensive tours you've seen on a ship, but they're also probably some of the coolest things you've ever thought about doing while on vacation.

Note that the probability of a tour being canceled for weather is almost the same for all tours offered between April and October, as the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable. Some of the more extreme tours, however, may not be available early or late in the season. If you want the best chance for optimal weather, consider the advice from Alaska.org and book your cruise between mid-June and mid-July.

If you're looking at splurging on a bucket list adventure while in Skagway – like Alaska Shore Tours' flightseeing helicopter adventure, which includes a dog-sledding experience on a glacier – you should check to make sure it's available the month you'll be cruising. This particular tour may not be open for booking before May or after September due to the conditions for the sled dogs.

Another over-the-top excursion dependent on optimal weather conditions is the Heli-Hike and Rail Adventure that begins in Skagway. This tour includes a helicopter ride from town that flies over glaciers and mountains, then drops you off for a roughly 5-mile guided hike to view Laughton Glacier and learn about the natural history of the area. After the hike, you'll board the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad at Glacier Station for the scenic journey through the mountains back to Skagway.

If you're interested in the Misty Fjords Flightseeing tour in Ketchikan, this thrilling ride is also best on a clear day. This Alaskan bush plane tour soars over the Misty Fjords National Monument, which has more than 2 million acres of pristine lakes, waterfalls, ancient forests and snowcapped mountains.

Tours that include activities like mountain climbing or navigating suspension bridges might also be best when done on a sunny day. The prime time for wildlife viewing and fishing, as mentioned above, will depend on what animals you're interested in seeing and which species of fish you want to catch.

The ship's excursion desk, local guides or tour providers can offer the best advice on how to plan your activities. No matter which tours you opt to take, be prepared for the ever-changing weather patterns by wearing layers – and make sure to bring a waterproof rain jacket. Before booking, you should check the individual tour operator's cancellation and refund policy.

The Bottom Line

Cruise ships dock in Skagway, Alaska.

If you're flexible as to when you can travel to Alaska, you may be able to take advantage of lower pricing, travel incentives and added perks in the shoulder seasons – and you'll have fewer crowds than in the busy summer months.

If your goal is to view wildlife, then most of the cruise season, especially from May to September, will offer ample opportunities to see bears, humpbacks whales, bald eagles and other amazing animals – depending on the itinerary and excursions you choose. You'll also be able to catch Alaska's prized salmon throughout much of the cruise season.

And if extreme adventures are going to be the highlight of your vacation, then be sure to check with the tour providers to make sure your top picks are offered when you're planning to travel. Not all tour providers operate the full seven months of the season.

No matter when you decide to visit, a cruise to The Great Land will be one of the most memorable vacations of your lifetime.

Norwegian cancels more than a dozen cruises on 7 ships in 2025

norwegian cruise in july

Norwegian Cruise Line canceled more than a dozen cruises on seven ships.

The sailings were scheduled to take place in 2025. The changes “are a result of varied events including the ongoing situation in the Red Sea and Israel, modified dry dock schedules for ship enhancements, a full ship charter, and lastly, to accommodate the demand for shorter close-to-home voyages to the Bahamas,” according to a spokesperson for the line.

The following itineraries were canceled:

  • Norwegian Spirit: Jan. 21, 2025
  • Norwegian Jade: Feb. 20 through and including March 24, 2025
  • Norwegian Sky: April 19 through and including June 5, 2025
  • Norwegian Star: May 17 through and including June 9, 2025
  • Norwegian Viva: May 18 and 27, and Sep. 20 and 29, 2025
  • Norwegian Pearl: Oct. 15, 2025
  • Norwegian Epic: Nov. 1 and 11, 2025

“We are committed to providing exceptional vacation experiences, both aboard our ships and by taking our guests to some of the most sought-out destinations around the world,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “While we try to maintain original itineraries as much as possible, at times modifications are made to optimize the itinerary, enhance the guest experience or accommodate certain circumstances.”

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

Guests whose cruises were impacted were given full refunds of their fare and a 10% discount in the form of a future cruise credit. The credit can be used on any of Norwegian’s published itineraries through Dec. 31, 2025.

Charting New Waters: Norwegian Cruise Line Unveils Ambitious Plans For Eight Ships

norwegian cruise in july

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd  (NYSE:NCLH) has unveiled a total of eight vessels, representing nearly 25,000 additional berths to be built across three brands.

The company also launched the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its Caribbean port of call.

The strategy is expected to boost Norwegian Cruise’s product offering, guest experiences, and operational infrastructure.

The new ship orders across all three brands are scheduled for delivery over a ten-year period, between 2026 and 2036.

After the delivery of four Prima-Plus class ships from 2025 through 2028, the cruise operator is expected to take delivery of four approximately 200,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of nearly 5,000 guests, in 2030, 2032, 2034, and 2036.

Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029.

Finally, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said President and CEO Harry Sommer.

The company has obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80% of the contract price of each of the two Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises ships.

The new pier development in the Bahamas is set to begin in summer 2024 and be completed by late 2025 with an investment of about $150 million.

Stifel  analyst Steven Wieczynski reiterated a Buy rating on the shares with a price target of $25.

NCLH now has 13 ships on order over the next 12 years for a combined 41,000 berths, representing about 65% capacity growth, noted the analyst.

With a historically smaller fleet, the company has been building new ships more aggressively versus peers in order to enter/serve certain markets.

Over the next decade this will not only give NCLH the biggest growth story within the cruise industry but will also allow them to continue entering new markets with minimal cannibalization to their fleet, the analyst noted.

Owning cruise stocks when supply growth has been low for an extended period of time, as per the analyst. While the headline of eight ships might make investors panic, the analyst urged them to look at the fine print.

Overall, according to the analyst, the positives surely outweigh the negatives.

Price Action : NCLH shares are trading lower by 2.35% at $18.93 on the last check Tuesday.

You can still find affordable flights to Europe this summer

Airfare prices to amsterdam, brussels, prague and reykjavik are way down from last year.

Christina Saull and her husband have waited five years to take a 10-day cruise through the Norwegian fjords. The first time they planned the trip, it was postponed for a medical emergency. The second time, there was a family wedding. Now, finally, they were getting ready to go in July.

Only they needed plane tickets.

“It’s interesting to see how expensive fares have been and how they’ve fluctuated,” said Saull, a public relations executive who lives in Alexandria, Va.

The couple watched prices go from as little as $900 round trip to as much as $2,500 for flights from Washington to Edinburgh, Scotland, and back from Copenhagen . They finally settled on premium economy seats for $2,000 each on Delta Air Lines and its partner Air France.

“I don’t think it’s unreasonable for summer Europe travel,” Saull said of what they paid.

Not unreasonable is a good way to describe transatlantic air travel this summer. Even with strong travel demand, tickets are cheaper on average than they were last year.

“Airfare to Europe is less expensive than last year by 10 percent,” said Hayley Berg, the lead economist at flight-booking app Hopper . The average round trip ticket before any extra fees costs $882, according to the data.

The highest fares are in June, July and August, Berg added. Traveling in shoulder months — for example, September and October — could save travelers as much as 30 percent.

Schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium Diio shows airlines will offer 8 percent more seats on U.S.-Europe routes from May through September than last year.

Philadelphia is gaining new nonstops to Copenhagen, Naples , and Nice, France, on American Airlines. Phoenix gets its first nonstop to Paris on Air France. Washington, a new flight to Zurich on Swiss International Air Lines. And many other routes additional flights or options on larger planes.

“In the transatlantic, we are looking forward to another strong summer,” said Glen Hauenstein, president of Delta Air Lines, referring to bookings earlier in April. He added the airline sees “healthy demand” for seats to Europe.

Paris has flight deals, but hotels are pricey

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics are a bump in the finely tuned machine that is summer air travel to Europe. The Games run from July 26 through Aug. 11, and the French capital is expected to host some 15 million visitors during the event and the following Paralympic Games. Last summer, the city saw more than 6.2 million visitors in July and August.

“Paris will be like an Olympic village in July and August,” said Christine Ourmières-Widener, CEO of the French airline French Bee . All those visitors still need a way to get to the city. French Bee , which caters to leisure travelers like those going to the Games, has added flights from Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to meet the demand.

Flight deals to Paris can still be found. Booking website Expedia recommends travelers buy tickets at least 21 days before their trip and, for international travel, look at departing on a Monday to find the best airfares.

Finding an affordable hotel in Paris during the Games is another matter. Expedia said it has seen a “massive surge” in searches for accommodations there this summer and recommends travelers look at nearby cities for more reasonably priced options.

Consider Nice, Prague and Reykjavik

Finn Vigeland, a transit planner who lives in Washington, was “quite surprised” last month when he found a good deal on flights to Nice, France, in July.

Prices on American Airlines’ new nonstop to Nice from Philadelphia were only $700 to $800 round trip, he said. That was affordable enough to make a trip to France with friends possible, and he booked the flight (with points, not cash).

Average fares to Nice from the United States are down a quarter to $907 compared to last summer, Hopper’s data shows. The city also has the distinction of being one of the few European destinations with lower airfares this summer than in 2019, 11 percent lower to be exact. That drop is, in part, thanks to a plethora of new flights on American, Delta, and United.

Amsterdam, Brussels, Prague , and Reykjavik , Iceland, are other European cities where ticket prices from the United States are down more than 20 percent from last year, according to Hopper.

Airfares are not down double-digits in all markets though. Fares to cities like Berlin and Glasgow, Scotland, are on par with last year.

Traveler after traveler said they felt like they could find reasonably priced plane tickets for trips between the United States and Europe this summer. Those who said they could not often lacked flexibility to adjust their trips to when and where fares are the cheapest.

“I felt like this was doable. It made sense,” Alexander Giess said of his plan to take his 10-year-old daughter on a three-week trip to France this summer.

After a lengthy search, in March the marketing executive paid about $1,000 each for two round-trip tickets to Nice from San Francisco on his preferred airline, Delta.
