How to Use Honda Cruise Control: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you a proud owner of a Honda vehicle? If so, you may have noticed the cruise control feature in your car. Cruise control is a convenient feature that allows you to maintain a constant speed while driving. Whether you’re going on a long road trip or simply want to relax during your daily commute, Honda cruise control can make your driving experience more enjoyable and stress-free.

In this article, we will provide you with a comprehensive guide on how to use Honda cruise control. We’ll walk you through the steps, explain the different functions, and address common questions and concerns. So, let’s get started and learn how to make the most of this fantastic feature in your Honda vehicle.

Step 1: Activate Cruise Control

The first step in using Honda cruise control is to activate the feature. To do this, follow these simple steps:

Here’s a YouTube video that demonstrates the process of activating cruise control in a Honda Civic:

To activate cruise control, locate the cruise control buttons on your Honda’s steering wheel. These buttons are typically marked with symbols such as ‘SET,’ ‘RES,’ and ‘CANCEL.’ Press the ‘ON/OFF’ button to turn on the cruise control system.

Once the cruise control system is activated, you will notice a confirmation light on your dashboard. This light indicates that cruise control is ready to be set at your desired speed.

Step 2: Set Your Desired Speed

Now that you have activated cruise control, it’s time to set your desired speed. Follow these steps:

To set the speed, accelerate your Honda to your desired cruising speed. Once you have reached the desired speed, press the ‘SET’ button on the steering wheel. This action will engage cruise control and maintain your current speed.

It’s essential to note that cruise control does not automatically adjust your speed according to traffic conditions. You are responsible for maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles on the road and adjusting your speed manually when necessary.

Step 3: Adjusting Cruise Control Settings

Now that you have set your desired speed, you can make adjustments to your Honda cruise control settings. Here’s how:

If you wish to increase your cruising speed, press the ‘RES’ (resume) button. This action will cause your Honda to accelerate gradually until it reaches the previously set speed.

Conversely, if you want to reduce your cruising speed, press the ‘SET’ button. Your Honda will decelerate to a lower speed. Alternatively, you can tap the brake pedal lightly to disengage cruise control temporarily.

You can also cancel cruise control altogether by pressing the ‘CANCEL’ button. This action will deactivate the system, and your Honda will return to manual driving mode.

Step 4: Exiting Cruise Control

When you no longer need to use cruise control, it’s essential to exit the system correctly. Here’s how to do it:

To exit cruise control, simply tap the brake pedal or press the ‘CANCEL’ button on the steering wheel. Either action will disengage cruise control, and your Honda will return to manual driving mode.

It’s crucial to note that cruise control should not be used in hazardous driving conditions, such as heavy traffic, slippery roads, or inclement weather. Always prioritize safety and use cruise control responsibly.

Honda CRV: How to Set Cruise Control

Cruise control is a cool way to put your Honda CRV on autopilot so to speak. In this setting, the vehicle can maintain speeds of 25mph or more without having to press the accelerator. However, it will not set at below 25mph. In addition, the feature disconnects when the brake is applied. Albeit this is a wonderful feature, be aware that cruise control can be dangerous on winding roads, in traffic, and on wet slippery or icy roads. With that being said, here are the uncomplicated steps to follow to set your Cruise Control.

Enable Cruise Control:

  • When your vehicle speed has reached 25mph or faster, press the MAIN button located on the RIGHT side of the steering wheel.
  • An ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) icon will appear in the dash screen to notify you that the system is ready for you to use.
  • Once you have reached the speed you want to set, press the -SET button.
  • To INCREASE the speed press the RES+ button.
  • To DECREASE the speed press the -SET.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

3 Options To Cancel Cruise Control:

  • Press the CANCEL button in the MIDDLE of the steering wheel.
  • Press the MAIN button.
  • Press the BRAKE pedal.

*Pressing the DISTANCE button located to the RIGHT of the cancel button will RE-ENGAGE your previous cruise control settings.

  • Main (On/Off) – Press to turn the system ON/OFF; Be sure the system is OFF when not using it, as if RES/+ or -SET is active, you could accidentally hit either, which will cause your vehicle to enter cruise control mode
  • SET/− (Set/Coast) – Used to set or decrease your desired speed
  • RES/+ – To maintain the desired speed or to accelerate the set speed. To increase the speed press this button. Each press will increase the speed at 1 mph faster.

**NOTE: If you are unable to activate this feature on the first try, REPEAT the steps. If you are still unsuccessful, contact the dealership for assistance or consult your vehicle user’s manual.

Select a year

  • Lows Not particularly quick, can't tow as much as rivals, hybrid's battery reduces cargo volume.
  • Verdict The CR-V has all the desirable qualities of the best compact SUVs: fuel efficiency, versatility, and plenty of the latest tech.

What's New for 2021?

Honda transitions the CR-V into 2021 without making any significant changes.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2021 Honda CR-V starts at $26,575 and goes up to $37,575 depending on the trim and options.

We think the EX Hybrid is the CR-V to get. Not only does it come stocked with popular standard features that include blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it's more refined and fuel efficient than the gas model. While our chosen eco-minded CR-V doesn't offer any options, it comes standard with all-wheel drive.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Honda did its homework planting its first turbocharged engine— a 1.5-liter unit that makes 190 horsepower—in a CR-V and pairing it with one of the best continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) available—praise we don’t give lightly. While most compact crossovers have meager towing limits, the CR-V has one of the lowest at 1500 pounds. Any parent moonlighting as a street racer might be disappointed with the CR-V’s acceleration. On the other hand, they—along with everyone else—will appreciate its refined ride, enthusiastic steering, and strong brakes. The composed and compliant ride of the CR-V makes for pleasant commutes, long or short. Its responsive brake pedal means you receive the stopping power you want when you ask for it. The CR-V hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and two electric motors that combine for 212 horsepower. We found the hybrid system to be smooth and unobtrusive , and we appreciated that Honda mitigated engine drone at wide-open throttle by adding sound-deadening materials and giving the audio system an active noise-cancelling feature. This provided a much quieter experience than the base engine, which was one of the loudest in its class when matting the gas pedal.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Good to look at, good to drive, and good on gas: the CR-V is among the most fuel-efficient compact crossovers we’ve tested. The EPA estimates the gas-only model will earn up to 28 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway. The last CR-V we tested on our 200-mile highway route, which simulates real-world fuel economy, had all-wheel drive and earned 32 mpg—matching its government rating. The hybrid CR-V is estimated to earn 40 mpg city and 35 highway. However, the Toyota RAV4 hybrid is rated at 41/38 mpg city/highway. In our real-world testing, the Honda earned 32 mpg on the highway, but the Toyota beat it by 5 mpg (37 total).

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

A stylish and spacious interior creates a cool and comfortable environment in the CR-V. Quality materials and a familiar layout combine for a contemporary look and feel. A tasteful balance of faux-wood accents, chromed plastic, and brushed-satin finishes looked particularly upscale in the Touring version we tested. Supportive and nicely sculpted front seats hug their occupants in all the right places. Leading its class in cargo volume and luggage space, the CR-V not only earns high marks in those subjects, but also by way of its inclusion of user-friendly and useful equipment. We managed to fit 10 carry-on suitcases behind the rear seat, which matched the Ford Escape and beat the CX-5 by one. Fold the back seat flat, and the Honda offers best-in-class luggage space.

2021 honda cr v hybrid touring interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

An otherwise excellent presentation is offset by Honda’s frustrating infotainment system. Base LX models come with a 5.0-inch color radio screen, but all other models get a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio; navigation is optional, as is a nine-speaker audio system. Honda reintroduced a rotary volume knob last year and we appreciate that, but a lack of other controls, slow infotainment responses, and the absence of an auxiliary input can’t be forgiven.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The CR-V earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ), and it was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ). The Honda also comes standard with a suite of driver-assistance technology to help prevent collisions from happening in the first place. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-keeping assist and lane-departure warning
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Honda covers every CR-V with limited and powertrain warranties that are competitive with most other manufacturers. The Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage are the exceptions, besting Honda and company with an unrivaled 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Their limited warranty is significantly better, too.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Honda Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (10 Popular Models)

Once only seen on luxury vehicles, adaptive cruise control has become commonplace in many mainstream cars, including Hondas.

The following Honda cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivan models have an adaptive cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

honda

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Honda models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, slowing down when the vehicle ahead does.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Hondas have Honda Sensing, a host of active safety features that includes adaptive cruise control.

Rival mainstream car makers that have popular models with ACC include:

  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

Honda Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 honda civic (incl. hatchback, type r).

Alongside the Toyota Corolla, the Honda Civic is among the best-selling compact cars of all time.

All Honda Civics from 2019 onwards have standard adaptive cruise control; Civic models from 2013 to 2018 had the conventional cruise control.

From 2001 to 2012, Honda Civic only had cruise control in the upper trims.

#2 Honda Insight

While the Toyota Prius hogs the limelight as the most popular hybrid car, the Honda Insight takes on the underdog tag with many desirable qualities, like superior fuel economy, a roomy interior, and a sedan body.

Honda Insight models from 2019 onwards have adaptive cruise control as standard.

From 2010 to 2014, Honda Insights only had the cruise control system in the pricier trims.

#3 Honda Clarity

Only a handful of hydrogen fuel cell cars are available in the market, and the Honda Clarity is one; it also has a plug-in-hybrid option.

The Honda Clarity has had adaptive cruise control as standard from its 2017 debut.

#4 Honda Accord & Accord Hybrid

Honda Accord and Toyoda Camry are best-sellers in the midsize sedan market.

Adaptive cruise control is standard in all Honda Accords from 2019 onwards, while models from 2006 to 2018 had the basic cruise control.

Honda Accord sedans from 2001 to 2005 only had cruise control in the higher trims.

The hybridized version of the Honda Accord has had adaptive cruise control from 2017 onwards.

Honda SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#5 honda hr-v.

Subcompacts are getting increasingly popular, and in keeping with the trend, Honda provides all HR-V models with standard adaptive cruise control from 2020.

Honda HR-V crossovers from 2016 to 2019 had a cruise control system.

#6 Honda CR-V & CR-V Hybrid

The super-popular Honda CR-V small SUV has adaptive cruise control from 2019 onwards.

2001 to 2018 Honda CR-V SUVs had conventional cruise control as standard, although adaptive cruise control (ACC) is available in some higher trims.

The CR-V Hybrid debuted in 2020 with adaptive cruise control as a standard provision.

#7 Honda Passport

The Honda Passport is a desirable two-row midsize SUV with a powerful engine and spacious interior to haul the family comfortably.

2019 and newer Honda Passport SUVs have adaptive cruise control (ACC) as standard, although the system only works above 20 mph.

#8 Honda Pilot

If you want a fuel-efficient Honda SUV with three rows of seats for up to eight occupants, the Honda Pilot is for you.

The Honda Pilot has had the adaptive cruise control system as standard since 2019.

Pre-2019 Honda Pilots had the conventional cruise control system instead.

Honda Truck with Adaptive Cruise Control

#9 honda ridgeline.

This Honda pickup is one of the most comfortable midsize trucks, thanks to its unibody construction rather than the truck-based body-on-frame.

Adaptive cruise control is standard for the Honda Ridgeline from 2020 onwards.

Honda Ridgeline models prior to 2020 had conventional cruise control, although the more-sophisticated adaptive cruise control (ACC) is available in the more expensive trims.

Honda Minivan with Adaptive Cruise Control

#10 honda odyssey.

As a family hauler and a highway cruiser, the Honda Odyssey has had adaptive cruise control since 2018; Odyssey models from 2001 to 2017 had the more-basic cruise control.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow

Helps maintain a constant vehicle speed and a set following-interval behind a vehicle detected ahead of yours and, if the detected vehicle comes to a stop, can decelerate and stop your vehicle, without you having to keep your foot on the brake or the accelerator.

cruise control honda crv 2021

Improper use of ACC with Low Speed Follow can lead to a crash.

Use ACC with Low Speed Follow only when driving on expressways or freeways and in good road and weather conditions.

ACC with Low Speed Follow has limited braking capability and may not stop your vehicle in time to avoid a collision with a vehicle that quickly stops in front of you.

Always be prepared to apply the brake pedal if the conditions require.

  • Radar Sensor

You can read about handling information for the camera equipped with this system.

  • Front Sensor Camera

ACC with Low Speed Follow Conditions and Limitations

cruise control honda crv 2021

  • On roads with frequent lane-change or continuous stop and go traffic, ACC with Low Speed Follow cannot keep an appropriate distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.
  • On roads with sharp turns.
  • On roads with toll collection facilities or other objects between lanes of traffic, or in parking areas, or facilities with drive through access.
  • On roads with bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.), ACC with Low Speed Follow may not detect the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you properly.
  • On roads with slippery or icy surfaces. The wheels may spin out and your vehicle may lose the control on the condition.
  • On roads with steep uphill or steep downhill slopes.
  • On roads with undulating slopes.

How to activate the system

cruise control honda crv 2021

To Set the Vehicle Speed

cruise control honda crv 2021

When driving at about 25 mph (40 km/h) or above: Take your foot off the pedal and press the RES/+ / SET/- switch up or down when you reach the desired speed. The moment you release the switch, the set speed is fixed, and ACC with Low Speed Follow begins.

When you use ACC with Low Speed Follow, Straight Driving Assist (a feature of the Electric Power Steering system) is activated.

When driving slower than about 25 mph (40 km/h): If the vehicle is moving and the brake pedal is not depressed, pressing the switch fixes the set speed to about 25 mph (40 km/h) regardless of current vehicle speed. If the vehicle is stationary, you can set the vehicle speed even with the brake pedal depressed.

When ACC with Low Speed Follow starts operating, the vehicle icon, interval bars and set speed appear on the gauge.

Customized Features Defaulting All the Settings

When in Operation

Exiting a vehicle that has been stopped while the ACC with Low Speed Follow system is operating can result in the vehicle moving without operator control.

A vehicle that moves without operator control can cause a crash, resulting in serious injury or death.

Never exit a vehicle when the vehicle is stopped by ACC with Low Speed Follow.

cruise control honda crv 2021

  • The vehicle ahead of you is going at almost the same speed as, or faster than, your vehicle.
  • A vehicle that cuts in front of you is going faster than your vehicle, gradually increasing the interval between the vehicles.

cruise control honda crv 2021

  • When the vehicle ahead of you moves away, such as when entering an interchange or rest area, ACC with Low Speed Follow may continue to maintain the set following-interval for a short time.

There is a vehicle ahead

ACC with Low Speed Follow monitors if a vehicle ahead of you enters the ACC with Low Speed Follow range. If a vehicle is detected doing so, the ACC with Low Speed Follow system maintains or decelerates your vehicle’s set speed in order to keep the vehicle’s set following-interval from the vehicle ahead.

To Set or Change Following-interval

cruise control honda crv 2021

When a vehicle whose speed is slower than your set speed comes in or cuts in front of you and is detected by the radar and the camera, your vehicle starts to slow down.

cruise control honda crv 2021

There is no vehicle ahead

Your vehicle maintains the set speed without having to keep your foot on the brake or accelerator pedal.

On steep downhill during ACC with Low Speed Follow, it brakes to inhibit excessive acceleration for maintaining the set speed. However, the vehicle speed may become faster than the set speed.

cruise control honda crv 2021

When you depress the accelerator pedal

You can temporarily increase the vehicle speed. In this case, there is no audible or visual alert even if a vehicle is in the ACC with Low Speed Follow range.

A vehicle detected ahead is within ACC with Low Speed Follow range and slows to a stop

Your vehicle also stops, automatically. The Stopped message appears on the gauge.

cruise control honda crv 2021

If no vehicle is ahead of you before you resume driving, depress the accelerator pedal and ACC with Low Speed Follow will operate again within the prior set speed.

cruise control honda crv 2021

The system may automatically shut off under certain conditions. Some examples of these conditions are listed below. Other conditions may reduce some of the ACC with Low Speed Follow functions.

Environmental conditions

  • Driving in bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.).

Roadway conditions

  • Driving on a snowy or wet roadway (obscured lane marking, vehicle tracks, reflected lights, road spray, high contrast).

Vehicle conditions

  • The outside of the windshield is blocked by dirt, mud, leaves, wet snow, etc.
  • An abnormal tire or wheel condition (incorrect sizes, varied sizes or construction, improperly inflated, compact spare tire, etc.).
  • The camera temperature gets too high.

cruise control honda crv 2021

  • Quick acceleration plus thrifty fuel economy
  • Roomy interior with cavernous cargo capacity
  • Rides comfortably yet handles corners athletically
  • Plenty of thoughtful storage areas
  • Touchscreen can be finicky to use and lacks a separate tuning knob
  • Below-average towing capability

What's new

  • No significant changes for the 2021 CR-V
  • Part of the fifth CR-V generation introduced for 2017

In a broad sense, the 2021 Honda CR-V is the quintessential small SUV. It's spacious without being overly bulky, comfortable without feeling soft or bouncy, and endlessly usable thanks to lots of cargo space. It's also easy to drive and offers available all-wheel drive. Yet the key to the CR-V's appeal is that it typically manages to do these things just a little bit better than the competition.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2021 Honda CR-V LX 4dr SUV (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

The CR-V competes in one of the most fiercely contested classes around, with just about every mainstream automaker building a crossover SUV that's roughly the same size and price as the Honda. Other top alternatives include the upscale Mazda CX-5, the well-equipped Nissan Rogue and the outdoorsy Subaru Forester. So is it for you? Check out the categories of our CR-V Expert Rating for our in-depth evaluation.

What's it like to live with?

When the current Honda CR-V debuted in 2017, we were so impressed that we went out and bought one for our long-term test fleet . Read our coverage to learn more about the CR-V's comfort, reliability and performance over the long haul. Note that while we tested a 2017 CR-V, the 2021 model is of the same generation and the majority of our coverage still applies.

Above any expectation, both musically and visually. The Bolshoi is a world well-known stage for the highest level of music, opera and ballet show and that is why we wanted to catch a glimpse of that legendary place. I lack words to describe the performance (we are well acquainted with the music and we know and even the story, however, the words were meaningless but, anyone can overcome that barrier since the music, and the performance supplied us with pleasure of the highest level). Due to the Covit19 pandemic we were unable to visit Russia nor attend the ballet. Two tickets were purchased for US$465.50. U Visit Russia was advised of not being able to attend and agreed to pay a full refund but there would be a delay due to the number of cancellations. After some time no refund was forthcoming and U Visit Russia was again contacted by email and we were advised that due to the volume of cancellations the refund would be credited to our credit card within 9 weeks. Nothing and again they were contacted by email but no response was ever received. No refund was ever received. Nothing!! The lesson is to beware of ever dealing with this company. I had pleasure to work with Maria Nerkrasova who arranged for our group of 14 Americans to visit Sergiev Posad (u must visit that monastery). She arranged for us tour guide Svetalna in Sergiev Posad - who provided us with excellent information. We visited Matroshka factory where we meet lady who's family been doing matreshka art for over 50 years, we had fabulous lunch with Russian traditional non alcoholic molt drink - kvass at Trapeznaya restaurant. We had awesome driver Ilya who drove our group from Moscow to Sergiev Posad and back with smile and confidence. Our group of 14 visitors from US can't say enough good things about U Visit Russia. Great company, great and caring people to work with like Maria, Anna, and their guides. If you decide to utilize U Visit Russia when you in Moscow ask them to secure Svetlana to be your tour guide, when you in St. Petersburg ask for Victoria to be your tour guide. We were asked to send over her passport information, and they even called us and demanded we send it right away (we were out and wi-fi connection was spotty). We sent it and everything seemed fine. On Thursday we got to the theatre and everyone that worked there told us the tickets were FAKE, they’d never seen anything like these, etc etc. I had to pay the tour fee (2000 rubles) AGAIN to buy ANOTHER TICKET there. Only after the tour had finished did they actually send us the PDF files that they had claimed to send earlier (which they did not). This also happened to TWO OTHER people on the same tour, they received their PDFs from Viator at the end of the tour. Save yourself 4000 rubles and the headache and just buy directly from the Bolshoi Theatre. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read more Written November 28, 2019
