Your Trip to the Maldives: The Complete Guide

cesar tour maldive

Made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands strung north to south in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet. Known for world-class diving, miles of empty white-sand beaches, and resorts oozing with luxury, the Maldives isn’t always the most budget-friendly destination (though bargains can be found). But if you’re looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Read on for our complete Maldives visitor’s guide, and learn the best places to stay, eat, dive, and explore in this spectacular tropical locale.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, it’s only natural that boats are the country’s transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the Malé Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.

Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so it’s important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either Hulhulé Island or in nearby Malé city.

Things to Do

This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.

  • Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
  • Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
  • Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
  • Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.

What to Eat and Drink

Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what you’ll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .

Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so don’t expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.

Where to Stay

If visitors stay in the city of Malé, it’s rarely for more than one night, as there’s not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the country’s myriad coral atolls.

Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the world’s most expensive resorts. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll.

There are also a variety of all-inclusive resorts, which range widely in quality. Check out Adaaran Prestige Vadoo , which is only 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport and has overwater villas with private pools, or the chic design and five restaurants at LUX* South Ari Atoll .

The Maldives’ lineup of five-star resorts are the stuff holiday dreams are made of. Postcard-perfect beaches, overwater villas, serene spas, and private butlers are only a taste of what to expect should you choose to splurge. Some of the most popular (and expensive) options include chains such as the Four Seasons , St. Regis , and the Six Senses , plus properties like Soneva Jani , which features massive overwater villas with private pools and waterslides, or Huvafen Fushi Maldives which has the world’s first and only underwater spa.

Getting There

The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly Malé International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of Malé. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where you’re staying. A bridge connects the airport (on Hulhulé Island) to adjacent Malé city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.

The Maldives’ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in Malé that are also worth exploring.

  • One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
  • The Maldives National Museum in Malé is a compact yet illuminating repository for the country’s prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
  • Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.

Money-Saving Tips

  • May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
  • Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

Maldives conjures up dreams of overwater villa holidays © Svetoslav Kirilov / 500px

Maldives conjures up visions of overwater villas on turquoise waters and couples on romantic honeymoons in five-star resorts. With its white sand beaches and incredible diving and surfing, there is so much to enjoy on these islands.

Ready for a holiday? As a year-round destination, it’s almost always a good time to go to Maldives. However, if you want guaranteed sunshine, it's best to aim for December to March for your visit. Outside those months there will be plenty of sunshine, but it will be broken up by rain and clouds - though you may save a bit of money. Whatever you decide, you will still get the quintessential Maldives experience. Here’s how to choose the best month to go to Maldives.

Editor's note: during  COVID-19  there are restrictions on travel and opening hours may vary. Check the latest guidance in Maldives before planning a trip, and always follow local health advice. Events may be subject to change.

High Season: December to February

Best time for guaranteed sunshine

Maldives enjoys its best weather from December to February. Travelers can expect little rain, low humidity and blue skies. However, Christmas and New Year holidays involve huge price hikes and often resorts require minimum stays of five days or more.

Shoulder Season: March to April

Best time for heat-seekers

The great weather continues until the end of April, when temperatures are at their hottest. The surf season begins in March and continues until October. While this is the traditional shoulder season, the prices do jump during Easter.

A surfer rides a waves.

Low Season: May to November

Best time for budget travelers

Storms and rain are more likely, but the weather remains warm and resorts are at their cheapest. Prices will rise in August to coincide with European summer holidays. The marine life is more varied on the western side of atolls at this time.

This is high season in Maldives, with Europeans coming for their winter holidays. The first week sees the end of the festive season, which means some minimum stay requirements might exist at some resorts. Expect perfect sunny days.  Key events:  New Year's Day

The peak of Maldives high season, February is a superb time to visit, with gorgeous sunny days and clear waters for snorkeling and diving. Chinese New Year sees a brief but noticeable surge in tourist numbers.  Key events:  Huravee Day

A palm tree lined island stands in the distance.

High season rumbles on, with accommodation booked out across the country. When Easter falls in this month, expect price hikes for the European school holidays. Weather remains idyllic with perfect conditions for snorkeling and diving.

Start of low season still sees quite a few crowds, especially over the holidays in Europe. Room prices drop and the weather is less predictable as the rainy season begins, though the sea is at its warmest.  Key events:  Martyrs' Day

Surf season begins in North and South Male Atolls, which sees surfers flocking to resorts and guesthouses with good access to the breaks. This is the coolest time of the year weatherwise. Whale shark spotting season begins.  Key events:  Ramazan

Rainfalls are frequent in June, but clear skies are common and temperatures warm. Surf season continues in North & South Male Atoll and room rates remain low. Manta ray spotting season begins in the Northern Atolls.  Key events:  Kuda Eid

Surf season begins in Gnaviyani Atoll, and there is a rise in visitors to coincide with the European summer holidays. The weather remains warm, but storms are not uncommon.  Key events: Independence Day

Swing hanging on a coconut palm at a tropical beach in the Maldives.

Despite being the rainy season, August is a busy month with school holidays in many countries. Surf season ends in Gnaviyani Atoll, but starts in Gaafu Dhaal and Addu Atoll, so many surfers simply move on.  Key events:  Bodu Eid

This is the height of the rainy season and peak low season, September's a good time for surfers and travelers more interested in cultural exchange and activities than the perfect tan. Rain remains common, though temperatures average a pleasant 27°C.

The last month of the low season, October marks the end of the wet monsoon, but you can expect severe storms and highly unpredictable weather. The surf remains excellent across the country and accommodation prices are low.  Key events:  National Day

Brightly colored buildings line a tropical street.

November is shoulder season, when prices start to rise again, although weather is still unpredictable and can rain for days, even though it's hot and humid. Manta ray season comes to an end at Hanifaru Bay.  Key events:  Victory Day; Republic Day; Prophet's Birthday

Although the weather isn't as predictable as in January, you can expect lots of sunshine, but little rain. The festive season, which brings with it surcharges and minimum stay requirements at some resorts, is a popular time for Europeans.

The Maldives are known as a luxury vacation destination. But for $100 per day, my husband and I had the trip of a lifetime.

  • The Maldives are often known as an expensive luxury destination with five-star resorts.
  • However, my husband and I traveled to the local islands in the Maldives for just $100 per day.
  • By visiting the local islands, we were able to save money and learn about the Maldivian culture.

Insider Today

With glamorous overwater bungalows, five-star resorts , and a decadeslong reputation for indulgence and luxury, the Maldives are known as a vacation destination for the rich and famous.

My husband and I are budget travelers through and through, and on a recent jaunt to Southeast Asia, we found cheap flights to the Maldivian capital that were enough to pique my interest.

Could the Maldives be traveled on a tight budget? Or were we doomed to spend the trip marooned on one of the world's most expensive islands to visit?

We found that we could travel to the Maldives for $100 per day as a couple — it just took a lot of planning.

The key to budget travel in the Maldives is visiting the local islands

Instead of traveling to the expensive, private-resort-owned islands that are separate from local communities , we island-hopped and splurged on the iconic underwater activities that make a trip to the Maldives worthwhile.

When planning our trip, we did extensive research and chose three local islands that offered unique underwater attractions: Gulhi, Ukulhas, and Omadhoo.

In Gulhi, we'd snorkel with sharks and see the stunning reef systems in the open ocean. We'd travel to Ukulhas, where visitors can snorkel with Manta Rays en masse year-round.

And finally, we'd visit Omadhoo for its pristine beaches .

The local Maldivian Islands were affordable and beautiful

During our trip, we stayed in locally-run guesthouses that offered a complimentary traditional Maldivian breakfast of finely ground coconut and tuna called Mashuni each morning.

The rooms were pristine, and because of the island's small size, everything was beachfront.

We spent our time on the islands strolling the finest white-sand beaches I've ever seen, systematically working our way through the menu of the local restaurants.

Each massive tuna-centric dish only cost us around $2 to $4 per plate. Even still, the trip felt luxurious and romantic.

It was simply the best beach vacation we've ever experienced.

We teamed up with other tourists to save money on tours and excursions

Another perk of visiting the local islands is the reasonably priced tours.

We quickly realized that the price per person would plummet if we could find fellow travelers to share the trips with.

Rather than opt for private excursions, we joined small groups of like-minded travelers for one tour on each island.

We spotted dolphins, snorkeled in vibrantly-colored coral gardens, saw clouds of tropical fish, and swam with all the mega-fauna we had hoped to.

These excursions proved the waters of the local islands had just as much to offer as the private-island resorts.

We utilized the public ferry to travel between islands to keep our costs low

Public ferries in the Maldives run regularly, albeit infrequently, to all the major inhabited islands.

These budget-friendly ferries churn slowly through the open ocean with bench seats and open-air windows.

We painstakingly scoured online ferry schedules and crafted a 14-day itinerary of island-hopping that allowed us to visit multiple islands with no ferry journey lasting longer than five hours.

Sure, we lost a few days to transport, but reading a book with the wind in my hair as we drifted through dolphin-filled waters hardly seemed like a waste of my precious vacation time.

By staying on the local islands, we got to experience more of the Maldivian culture

We had originally intended to visit the local islands to obtain luxury with a budget price tag.

However, we soon discovered that what we loved most about our budget-friendly experience was getting a good look into the local culture.

Since we weren't staying in secluded private resorts, this also meant that we had to be more aware of the country's rules.

For example, many tourists may not realize that bikinis are not allowed on most public beaches in the Maldives.

By staying on the local islands, we got to interact with members of the community and learn about their incredible sea-faring history. We also enjoyed mouthwatering local cuisine.

Additionally, we felt good knowing the money we spent went to locally-owned businesses instead of mega-resorts.

As a couple, we spent just over $1,400 to spend 2 weeks in the Maldives

By booking the cheapest local guesthouses, utilizing local ferries, and choosing our underwater attractions carefully, we saved big and were still able to relish in the pristine white-sand beaches that make the Maldives famous.

Our verdict? The Maldives are an underrated budget-travel destination and should be on every traveler's bucket list.

  Vacanta perfecta in Maldive

Pic 1 Maldive

Pic 3 Maldive

Unde sa calatoresti in Maldive?

  • O vizita in Male este obligatorie; in ciuda dimensiunii sale, capitala este gazda multor moschei, muzee interesante si atractii inedite.

Seaplane Tours in Maldives

Seaplane Tours in Maldives for Ultimate Excitement

Why are seaplane tours in the Maldives a must-do? That’s because most visitors come to the Maldives to relax on the sugar-soft beaches and cool down in the warm Indian Ocean. But seeing the islands from above is a must-do while you’re here. Countless small islands dot the landscape, and brilliant palm-fringed terrain rises majestically from the blue sea in every direction.

Because many resorts are only reachable by plane, many guests’ vacation packages include a trip. For those who don’t, splurging on a private trip to an isolated, lonely island or a 15-minute flyover to take pictures is well worth it.

A Maldives seaplane tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the islands, sandbars, and lagoons from the air. In this way, tourists may get a new perspective on popular sites like Hulhumale and Male Islands in the Maldives.

Who Operates Seaplane Tours in the Maldives?

In the Maldives, two major companies provide this exhilarating experience: Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) and Maldivian Air Taxi (MAT). Flights last about 20 minutes but may be extended upon request.

A seaplane trip over the Maldives may accommodate up to 18 passengers at a time. All flights depart and arrive throughout the day. Prior booking is required for charter flights such as sightseeing, whale shark sightings, and honeymooners.
