17 Exciting Day Trips from Ubud That You Don’t Want to Miss

Visiting Besakih Temple, a Hindu temple in East Bali, is a great option as a day trip from Ubud.

Bali’s Ubud area is one of our favorite places to stay. What’s not to like with the calmer vibe, walkable access to popular attractions, and delicious and affordable restaurants ?!

Ubud has many things to do to keep you occupied for a few days , such as visiting Tegalalang Rice Fields and Goa Gajah.

While there aren’t any nearby beaches or ocean here, there are plenty of bucket list-worthy places to visit that are only 1-2 hours away. It helps that Ubud is in a central location!

From the beautiful waterfalls , outdoor adventures , to iconic temples, we’re sharing 17 day trips from Ubud that you can’t miss.

We’re focusing specifically on North, South, and East Bali as we haven’t traveled to West Bali (where the National Park is located). There is also a day trip to Java island! This post also includes important information such as the distance from Ubud (we’ll use Ubud Palace as the starting location) and the estimated driving time.

We visited Bali a few times and used Ubud as a base location for our 4 days itinerary and a portion of our 2 weeks itinerary and have visited each of these places. Therefore, you’ll get the inside scoop on what to do at each of the locations.  Since you’ll be walking a lot, we recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes.

Without further ado, here are the best day trips from Ubud to add to any Bali itinerary.

G etting Around Bali

How are you supposed to travel to each of these places? Since Ubud is more inland on the island, there are a few transportation options in Bali to consider. Public transportation such as buses is out of the question as they aren’t available.

Driving a motorbike is a popular way to travel around Bali. It’s a cheap way to explore Bali if you’re a solo traveler or traveling as a couple. The caveat is that you must know how to drive a motorbike beforehand. There is a lot of traffic in the main areas and the rural areas have narrow roads.

Renting a motorbike is around 60,000-300,000 IDR ($4.20–$21 USD) per day. Book a motorbike rental here . Just remember to wear a helmet and drive slowly. Many visitors get into motorbike accidents so you should consider getting travel insurance .

If you have a larger group or are not interested in riding a motorbike, hire a driver . You won’t regret having a local driver navigate the roads while you can rest in the car.

The cost to hire a driver varies depending on your itinerary and will cost between 500,000 IDR to 650,000 IDR ($34-$44 USD). Pre-book a driver here or send us a message for our driver’s information.

We used a driver for the day trips that we’ve taken. During the rainy season, having a driver was a lifesaver as we sat in the car during the heavy rain.

U bud Day Trips to North Bali

North Bali is typically not on a typical itinerary. It takes some time to drive to North Bali from Ubud, yet it’s well worth the opportunity.

We’re sharing a snapshot of places to visit from Ubud such as waterfalls, rice fields, and even an iconic mountain!

A suggestion is to visit 2 or 3 of these attractions so you don’t feel rushed with exploration.

Read our things to do in North Bali post for more inspiration on places to visit.

1. mount batur.

Distance from Ubud: 41-45 kilometers (25.5-28 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 15 minutes

Here is your chance to hike the popular Mount Batur and to see the sunrise . This is one of the most adventurous activities to do while you’re in Bali. Just prepare for an early morning start.

The easiest way to visit Mount Batur is to join a tour group . You can walk along Ubud to find a tour agency or pre-book a tour here . The cost includes pick up and drop off from their Ubud accommodations, breakfast, water, local guides, and/or a side trip to a coffee plantation or hot spring. Expect to get picked up between 1:00-2:00am, and then start hiking around 4:00am.

The hike isn’t difficult as the hiking pace is slow . Plus, the hiking path is shared with other tour groups so some areas are congested.

Once you reach the summit at 1,717 meters (5,633 feet) , it’s time to find a spot to sit, enjoy the boxed breakfast of bread, hard-boiled eggs, and bananas, and watch the gorgeous sunrise. During our visit, the sun rose around 6:30am.

You’ve accomplished so much before the day even started, although, you may need to nap the rest of the day.

Read more information in our Mount Batur sunrise hike guide .

2. Brahma Vihara Arana

Distance from Ubud: 75 kilometers (46.6 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 2 hours 4 minutes

After visiting numerous Balinese Hindu temples, it’s time to change the pace to visit the Buddhist monastery , Brahma Vihara Arana. It’s a serene place to visit as the monastery is in the middle of the jungle. Plus, you may have the monastery grounds to yourself!

What is neat about this place is that there are Buddha statues everywhere and Buddhism is incorporated in the statues and stupas . Depending on your visit, you can see monks meditating. Otherwise, it’s a quiet place to wander around.

Plus, there is a mini version of the Borobudur Temple . You can see the actual UNESCO-recognized temple nearby Yogyakarta in Central Java . Java island is to the west of Bali and another island to check out in Indonesia !

Brahma Vihara Arana is a Buddhist temple that has a mini version of Borobodur Temple in Java, Indonesia.

Brahma Vihara Arana is a hidden gem and a highly recommended thing to do in North Bali.

3. Sekumpul Waterfall

Distance from Ubud: 68 kilometers (42.25 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 2 hours

Out of all of the waterfalls that we’ve visited in Asia , Sekumpul Waterfall is high on our “favorites” list. It’s the first waterfall that we visited in Bali and we were spoiled by its beauty.

The waterfall is surrounded by luscious jungles and isn’t crowded with tourists . The cascades are stunning at 80 meters (260 feet) high. You can also do some swimming at the base of the waterfall.

To get to the waterfalls, you have to do a short 15-20 minute hike down the mountain. The walking path is a bit slippery and you’ll need to cross the waters that are ankle to calf-high (depending on the water flow at the time.

Read our Sekumpul Waterfall post on how to avoid tour scams.

4. Banyumala Twin Waterfall

Distance from Ubud: 57-60 kilometers (35-37 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 40 minutes

Banyumala Twin Waterfall is another fabulous waterfall to experience as a side trip from Ubud. The entrance is a little harder to get to as it’s a bit hidden from the main road. Plus, the driving path is narrow for cars.

Regardless, you take a short 10-minute hike from the ticket office to the base of the falls, and then you’re rewarded to two cascading falls . You can take stunning waterfall photos from the bridge or swim/walk to the base of the falls.

From here, you can visit the neighboring local attractions such as the Buyan-Tamblingan Lake viewpoint or Hidden Hills Wanagiri for Instagram photos of swings and bird nests.  These two places are located along the main road.

Read our Banyumala Twin Waterfalls guide for more insider tips.

5. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

Distance from Ubud: 44-48 kilometers (27-30 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (Pura Ulun Danu Beratan) is one of the popular temples to visit on the island. The main temple, Lingga Petak Temple , which has holy water, is surrounded by Lake Beratan. Therefore, you won’t be able to walk directly to the temple. An option is to hire a boat to take you closer to the temple.

The temple ground isn’t large, so it’s easy to walk around and check out the other temples and artwork.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is another great spot to visit on your Ubud day trip.

6. Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Distance from Ubud: 40-46 kilometers (25-28.5 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 12 minutes

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces is a hidden gem, especially if you love rice fields . Although Tegalalang Rice Fields nearby Ubud has breathtaking views, Jatiluwih is worthy of a visit.

The rice fields are vast and green due to using the subak water irrigation system , which received UNESCO recognition. (If you go during the rice burning season, the fields are yellow and you may consider wearing a mask since it will smell like smoke).

It’s easy to wander around a walking path or two and soak in the beauty of the rice fields. There are opportunities to talk to a local farmer at pop-up stations. You can also travel around the rice fields on a bike tour.

South Bali is an area that we haven’t explored a lot of, yet, there are some noteworthy places to visit on your Ubud day trip.  We suggest that you focus on one area in South Bali to lessen your travel time and get stuck in traffic.

7. Hidden Canyon

Distance from Ubud: 14 kilometers (8.7 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 22 minutes

Hidden Canyon ( Hidden Canyon Beji Guwang ) is one of our favorite day trips from Ubud! It’s a fabulous spot away from the crowds as you get to walk through canyons .

It’s no ordinary walk through the canyons as there is water flowing through the canyons and can be ankle to waist-high. Walking through the water is quite an adventure and more challenging than expected!

Don’t worry. You’ll have a tour guide that will guide you through the canyon and take photos of your trip. Safety is a priority for the tour guides so you’re in good hands.

No matter what time you visit, you’ll have peaceful canyons to yourself. We saw a handful of tourists during our visit.

Read our Hidden Canyon guide for more helpful tips.

8. Uluwatu Temple

Distance from Ubud: 53 kilometers (33 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 50 minutes

Uluwatu Temple (Pura Uluwatu or Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is worth the visit when visiting South Bali. The temple is located along the cliffside so you’ll get some incredible views of the ocean . Take the time to walk along the cliffside to enjoy the landscapes. Watch out for the monkeys in the area as they will take your stuff hanging out of purses and backpacks.

In the evening, the temple has the Kecak Fire Dance . The show is one hour and tells a story of the battle of Ramayana. The main draw of this show is that you can see the sunset at the time and also learn about the Balinese culture.

While you can visit Uluwatu Temple for a day trip, we suggest that you stay a night or two in the area so you can make a trip to see beaches.

One of the highlights of visiting Uluwatu Temple is to see the Kecak Fire Show

9. Seminyak

Distance from Ubud: 31 kilometers (19.2 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 30 minutes

As we mentioned earlier, Ubud is surrounded by jungles and forest areas. If you’re looking for some beach time and beach cafes, then you need to head to Seminyak.

This area is perfect to go cafe hopping, beach hopping, shopping, and learning how to surf . You don’t need to have much planned as hanging out and relaxing can be the main highlight of your Seminyak day trip .

Seeing the sunset from any of the beaches in the Seminyak area is highly recommended. The pinks, purples, and pink skies colors are memorable to see in person. The photo below is from Seminyak Beach.

The sunset at Seminyak Beach is well worth seeing

Distance from Ubud: 30 kilometers (18.6 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 10 minutes

Canggu is the best spot to hang out at cafes and eat healthy foods. There are tons of incredible brunch places to try.

A recommended place to try is Baked. Although it’s in the Pereranan area which is slightly outside of Canggu, they have incredible eggs benedicts and baked goods.

Canggu is also another fantastic spot to see the sunset from the beaches. Similar to the Seminyak area, there are also surfing lessons here.

11. Nusa Penida

Distance from Ubud: n/a – On another island

Driving Time (one-way): n/a – Have to take a 20-minute speedboat ride from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan or directly to Nusa Penida.

Want a different vibe from Bali? Head to Nusa Penida. It’s the largest island of the three islands that makes up the Nusa Islands . The other two islands are Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan.

Located south of Bali, spending a day in Nusa Penida would include lots of relaxing on beaches and seeing iconic attractions such as Kelingking Beach and Broken Beach . You’ll love seeing the blue waters and the unique cliffside landscapes.

A day trip to Nusa Penida is doable, yet requires some planning. The easiest way is to take a tour as they will have everything set up from your speedboat tickets and hiring a driver.

If you’re a planner, you can organize a trip on your own and purchase your speedboat tickets in advance and rent a motorbike on arrival. Ensure that you purchase the speedboat ticket that departs the first time in the morning – around 9:30am to 10:00am.

Otherwise, we recommend that you stay on Nusa Penida for a minimum of two days .

Ubud Day Trips to East Bali

East Bali is a dreamy place to visit as there are more mountains and plenty of greenery. Since East Bali requires some time to arrive by car or motorbike, it’s recommended to group two or three of these attractions together in one trip.

Read our things to do in East Bali post for more details.

12. besakih temple.

Distance from Ubud: 43 kilometers (26.8 miles)

Want to see one of the largest Hindu temples on Bali? Check out Besakih Temple ( Pura Besakih )! It’s also known as the “ Mother of Temple ” where thousands of locals make the pilgrimage here for celebrations and burials.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to explore the temple on your own . As a part of the admission cost, you get a sarong, a motorbike ride from the ticket area to the entrance, and a local guide. The guide provides the history of the temple and takes you around the temple since many of the smaller temples are closed to tourists.

On a clear day, you can see Mount Agung in the background!

13. Lempuyang Temple

Distance from Ubud: 64-70 kilometers (40-43.5 miles)

Lempuyang Temple ( Pura Lempuyang ) is an iconic temple to visit. This temple is up on the hillside of Mount Lempuyang and is known for the Instagram-worthy photo spot of the “ Gateway to Heaven .” It’s the first out of seven gates to visit the complex and has a view of Mount Agung through the gate. There is a line to take photos, yet, it’s a lovely view if you have a clear day.

Or, you can consider getting up early to drive and see the sunrise from this gate .  You’ll need to leave Ubud before 4:00am if you want to see the sunrise.

If you have the time and the stamina, consider visiting the other gates. You’ll need to climb over 1440 steps to reach the temple at the top of the mountain. During your walk, you’ll witness locals bringing offerings to each of the gates, see families of monkeys in the trees, and enjoy the quietness.

Read more about our Lempuyang Temple experience here.

14. Tirta Gangga Water Palace

Distance from Ubud: 56-60.5 kilometers (34.8-38.6 miles)

Visiting Tirta Gangga Water Palace ( Taman Tirta Gangga ) is a must-visit during your Ubud day trip itinerary. It’s a former royal palace with manicured gardens, bridges, and fountains.

The highlight of this place is the pond area with the guardian statues and stepping stones on the right side of the entrance. Follow the stones to see the water fountain in the middle of the pond. You’ll see huge orange and yellow koi fish swimming around the stone path.

Fish food is available for purchase at the front entrance but the koi are huge. They are fed often by the groundskeepers and visitors.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace has beautiful guardian statues and a maze walking path around the pool.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace is a lovely water garden to explore when you’re in East Bali.

15. Houses Tree Hill Lemped

Distance from Ubud: 54-59 kilometers (33.5-36.6 miles)

Houses Tree Hill Lemped ( Bukit Lemped ) is a fun place to explore as a day trip from Ubud. This local attraction has many treehouses to wander through . It’s fun for everyone including those with children.

To enjoy this place, all you need to do is climb ladders to various treehouses and cross the bouncy suspension bridges to travel between treehouses. The bridges are not for those who are afraid of heights since they will sway back and forth as you walk across. You’ll get lovely views of neighboring rice fields from above.

There are Instagram photo spots of swings and bird nests.

We're standing on a long suspension bridge at Bukit Lemped. The bridge overlooks a rice field and a river underneath. It's one of the fun activities to do when you're in East Bali.

Visit Bukit Lemped to conquer your fear of heights via the suspension bridges and also wander through treehouses.

16. Ujung Water Palace

Distance from Ubud: 58-62 kilometers (36-38.5 miles)

Driving Time (one-way): 1 hour 35 minutes

Ujung Water Palace ( Taman Soeka Sada Ujung ) is a larger water palace compared to Tirta Gangga Water Palace. It has three large pools and one main building, which serves as a museum of the royal family.

The best thing to do at Ujung Water Palace is to explore the immaculate gardens and the pool area . There are stairways to see an aerial view of the water palace area and the ocean.

Since everything is more spread out here, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take photos without the crowds.

Viewpoint of the Taman Ujung Water Palace and the gardens at the top of the stairways.

Taman Ujung Water Palace is a great place to see the stunning gardens.

17. Ijen Crater on Java Island

Driving Time (one-way): 3 hour drive to Gilimanuk Harbour + boat ride + drive to Ijen

Interested in visiting Ijen Crater in East Java ? It is possible to do a very long day trip from Bali to Ijen Crater.

Ijen Crater is one of the coolest places to visit to see an active volcano with sulfuric gas. Many visitors hike up Ijen after 2:00am to see the vibrant Blue Fire, a natural fire by sulfur gas and one of the largest blue fires in the world.

Afterward, everyone waits to see the beautiful sunrise over the turquoise acidic lake.

Along the hiking route, you’ll see many sulfur miners carrying over 50 kg (110 pounds) of yellow sulfur per day.

It’s recommended to do an Ijen Crater tour since the tour agency takes care of the transportation from Ubud and admission. The tour will also provide a gas mask when seeing the Blue Fire. Even though the tour takes place in the middle of the night, it’s worth the visit!

Read our Ijen Crater hiking guide for more details.

Situated inland and surrounded by rice fields , the town of Ubud oozes tranquillity and has bucket loads of culture. There are some amazing things to do in Ubud itself, but given its central location it also makes for a great base for day trips around Bali . Whether it’s for a morning or afternoon out of town, or a whole day off exploring, there are an abundance of temples, waterfalls, stunning landscapes and other bucket list experiences that you can take advantage of when you stay in Ubud. So to help you pick your must-do trips, here are 9 of the best one day trips from Ubud (although I’d recommend you do them all)!

Tip: You can easily combine two or three of these places into one day trips from Ubud. Therefore, it is viable to include all 9 of these things to do near Ubud in your itinerary for Bali!

Tegalalang Rice Terraces - One of the best day trips from Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

1. Tegalalang Rice Terraces – one of the best Ubud day trips

Tegalalang Rice Terrace in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

If you take one excursion out of Ubud when you visit, then it must be Tegalalang Rice Terraces . Located a ~20 minute drive from the town , the steep and curvy iconic terraces are picture-perfect and make for one of the best day trips from Ubud. Take some time to wander through, up, down and around the rice terraces, and perhaps stop for a cold Bintang at one of the little vendors deep within the terraces whilst you soak up the views. Depending on how long you want to marvel at your surroundings, you’ll probably only need around 2-3 hours here .

Tip: Mopeds are a common mode of transport in Bali and can be easily rented to get around the island. However, unless you are proficient at moped riding in Southeast Asia, I would recommend hiring a private driver for your day trips due to the chaos of the roads. Private drivers are affordable in Bali – I always use Awan at Bali Safest Driver .

2. Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul Temple - One of the best day trips from Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

Dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu God of Water, Tirta Empul is a tranquil temple with Holy Waters pouring out of the fountains and into the long rectangular Koi-filled pool which are used for purification by the Hindu population who bathe there. It is a serene setting where you can spend some time admiring the architecture and observing the religious practices that take place. Tirta Empul Temple is located ~35 minutes drive north of Ubud , and is one of the top day trips from Ubud for a real taste of culture.

Tip: You’ll need to cover up your legs when you visit temples in Bali. At some temples, you may be able to borrow sarongs, but one of the best travel tips for Bali is to pack one of your own and carry it with you when you are out sightseeing – you never know when you might stumble upon a temple you’d like to visit!

3. Gitgit Waterfall

Gitgit Waterfall - One of the best day trips from Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

Swimming beneath a waterfall is a definite on any bucket list for Southeast Asia , and Bali is the perfect place to tick this off. And if the idea of swimming in a plunge pool below a cascading waterfall is dreamy to you, then Gitgit Waterfall is one of the must-do places to visit around Ubud . Located a ~1 hour 30 minute drive north of Ubud (admittedly a tad further than the rest of the day trips on this list), Gitgit Waterfall is a lesser-visited hidden gem and picturesque waterfall in a secluded jungle oasis which you will not regret visiting!

Tip: Be careful in the waters and avoid swimming directly beneath the cascading water due to its force. There aren’t any lifeguards here and (if you’re lucky) the waterfall can be quiet so there won’t be many people to get help if you need it.

4. Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan Waterfall - One of the best day trips from Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

Unlike Gitgit Waterfall, Tegenungan Waterfall is one of the better known waterfalls near Ubud . At only a ~20 minute drive south of Ubud , it is frequented by many day trippers due to its close proximity and beauty. Tegenungan is a roaring waterfall located down many steps in the valley below (so wear your walking shoes)! You can cross the river on a questionable plank of wood (at least it was a bit dodgy when I visited) to reach the steps that climb up the side of the waterfall, where you can find perfect places to capture those everlasting memories on camera!

Tip: If it’s been raining and the water is fast flowing, you may not be able to swim in Tegenungan Waterfall due to the danger (there should be lifeguards on site). And if you’re climbing up the side of the waterfall, be mindful that it can be slippery – don’t do anything silly for the sake of capturing the perfect snap!

5. Pura Ulun Danu Batur

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple - One of the best day trips from Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

Before I travelled to Bali, Pura Ulun Danu Batur was the picture-perfect temple I associated Bali with as it’s the one you see on travel brochures and guides ! Pura Ulun Danu Batur is a Hindu temple located on the tranquil Lake Bratan. It is situated a little further from Ubud ( ~60 minute drive , depending on the traffic) but its sheer beauty makes it worth the extra journey. It gushes serenity and is a stunning setting to spend the morning wandering, whilst admiring the architecture and calmness of the complex! (note: due to it’s location, if you are doing a customised tour this is a good place to combine with Gitgit Waterfall ).

6. Go Whitewater Rafting

If you are an adrenaline junkie , then Whitewater Rafting will make for one of the perfect day trips from Ubud, Bali. Granted, I came back minus a brand new water shoe after being thrown out of the raft, but Whitewater Rafting was one of my most memorable experiences on my 3 week trip to Singapore, Malaysia and Bali ! I pre-booked my Rafting trip with Ubud Rafting Adventure before I left the UK because I wanted to go with a company that had good reviews. The tour with Ubud Rafting Adventure will take you along the Agung River beside rainforests and rice paddies , and should include pick up/drop off from/to Ubud, equipment, lunch, and the actual rafting! (note: raft at your own risk!)

7. Goa Gajah

Goa Gajah , also known as the Elephant Cave , has a beautifully carved exterior and is just a ~10 minute drive southeast of Ubud . Located in a peaceful complex scattered with ancient trees and small sacred bathing pools, Goa Gajah is a Hindu temple which dates back to approximately the 11th Century . As you enter through the demonic-looking mouth, inside the small cave you will find religious statues and worship areas. Goa Gajah is one of the most popular places to visit near Ubud, so to avoid the crowds try and arrive early !

8. Coffee plantations

Bali has an abundance of coffee plantations where you can sample a range of teas and coffees, and buy locally produced produce . If you head to the Satria Coffee Plantation you can enjoy some beautiful scenery and will find one of the Bali Swings if you fancy an adrenaline rush (I haven’t been on the swing, but visited Satria Coffee Plantation after Tegalalang Rice Terraces and saw people doing so).

Coffee and tea tasting at a coffee plantation - One of the best day trips from Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

If you do a day tour from Ubud to a Coffee Plantation, be mindful that you are likely to find Kopi Luwak here and possibly the creatures which produce it. Kopi Luwak is made from coffee beans ingested by the Asian Palm Civet, which are collected and processed from the excrement of the mammal to produce one of the world’s most luxurious and expensive coffees. But there are concerns around the Palm Civet being held in captivity to produce this, so perhaps educate yourself about why this is an unethical practice before you drink or buy the coffee.

9. Pura Gunung Kawi

Gunung Kawi - One of the best day trips from Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!

Pura Gunung Kawi is a Hindu temple complex with some fascinating shrines carved into the rock faces and various ponds and sacred bathing pools scattered throughout. Located ~30 minute drive north of Ubud a stone’s throw from Tirta Empul Temple, Pura Gunung Kawi sits at the bottom of 272 steps amongst the rice paddies and jungle . The sound of running water from the nearby river makes the setting quite a mystical place, and one of the best day tours from Ubud, Bali, to take.

Our 8 Favourite Day Trips From Ubud

Last Updated on September 5, 2024

bali day tours from ubud

Kieren Windsor

Hi, I’m Kieren, a full-time blogger from the UK. Bali’s become my home from home after spending 10+ months visiting every corner of the island. Every photo on this blog was taken by us during our travels!

As affiliates, we may earn a commission on any qualifying purchase at no extra cost to you – read more .

Ubud is Bali’s cultural centre, packed with markets, historic palaces, artist studios, and yoga shalas. But one of the biggest draws of staying in Ubud is it’s central location, making it perfect for taking day trips around the island.

Whether you’re looking for a cultural adventure, a family-friendly day out, or picturesque landscapes, there’s something for every taste.

With a combined 2 years travelling around Bali between us, we’ve put together this guide to share our favourite day trips from Ubud that offer a mix of must-see attractions and hidden gems.

How to take a day trip from Ubud

There are three main ways to take a day trip from Ubud:

  • Self Drive . The first option is renting a scooter and driving yourself. This is the method we use as we enjoy the freedom it gives us. Scooters are cheap and easy to hire in Ubud. But you’ll need an international license and experience.
  • Private Driver . Another popular option is to hire a private driver to take you around for the day. You can give your driver a pre-planned itinerary. Hire a private driver using  this booking form .
  • Taxis . The final option is to book taxis using online taxi app like Grab or Gojek. However, this method only works when you need dropping to and from one destination.

Throughout this list of Ubud day trips, we’ve included information on how to get to and around each place we mention.

We’ve pinned 300+ things to do, places to eat, and accommodations to an interactive map. Get free access when you join our mailing list.

1. Kintamani

bali day tours from ubud

Kintamani is one of our absolute favourite places in Bali. While most people know it for Mount Batur, Bali’s second-largest volcano, there’s so much more to see and do in this peaceful mountainous region.

We love hopping between the pretty cafes perched along the crater edge and relaxing in the area’s natural hot springs heated deep below the surface.

For the best experience, we recommend an early start to climb Mount Batur for sunrise. The hike took us around 2 hours, so you’ll need to leave Ubud by 2.15am to ensure you’re at the top in time. If hiking isn’t for you, consider a 4WD sunrise jeep tour instead.

bali day tours from ubud

Many people head straight back to Ubud after Mount Batur. But if you’re not too exhausted, stick around to enjoy some of Kintamani’s other attractions.

Here’s our recommended itinerary for a full day trip:

  • Sunrise on Mount Batur (hiking or jeep tour )
  • Breakfast with a view at Paperhills
  • Visit the Pura Segara Ulun Temple
  • Relax at Toya Bungkah Hot Springs
  • Visit the Batur Geopark Museum
  • Lunch at AKASA Speciality Coffee

It’s best to book a private driver for the day and give this itinerary to them (or come up with your own).

If you do the sunrise hike, it’s best to go with a local guide. Your driver can arrange this or you can book here if you’re driving yourself. Even if you skip the sunrise trip up Mount Batur, Kintamani is still worth visiting.

2. East Bali

bali day tours from ubud

East Bali is a quieter part of the island, home to beautiful water palaces, incredible views of Mount Agung, and some hidden cultural gems.

Our favourite hidden gem in East Bali is the Lontar Museum , where you can learn about the Balinese language and a traditional type of manuscript called lontars.

At the end of our session, we were taught how to write our names in the Balinese Aksara alphabet and carved them onto lontars – one we left behind at the museum and another we could take home as a souvenir.

bali day tours from ubud

While in East Bali, many people want to visit Pura Lempuyang to capture the famous picture at the Gates of Heaven. But we’d advise against this as you can easily waste 3-4 hours waiting in line for one photo.

Instead, we prefer Lahangan Sweet, where a series of hilltop viewpoints offer almost identical photos without the wait (see example above).

Here is our suggested day trip itinerary for East Bali:

  • Taman Ujung
  • Museum Pustaka Lontar
  • Lunch at Bali Asli Restaurant
  • Tirta Gangga
  • Lahangan Sweet

In total, this itinerary will take around 12 hours round-trip from Ubud. If you book your private driver through this booking form as we recommend, know that there will be a surcharge of 250,000 IDR due to the driving distance (paid in cash).

See our full East Bali itinerary for a detailed outline of the day trip.

bali day tours from ubud

There are some lovely walks in Ubud, but they are no match for trekking in the rural village of Sidemen .

Around a 1hr30 drive from Ubud, this agricultural region is known for its beautiful rice terraces sitting in the shadows of Mount Agung, Bali’s largest volcano. The best way to enjoy the region’s stunning nature is by taking a trekking tour.

bali day tours from ubud

We recruited local guide Komang Adi from Sidemen Trekking who grew up in the area and knew it well. We’d strongly advise heading out with a guide because it’s easy to get lost. The route we took was not on any maps.

The tour lasted just around 2.5 hours, including a stop at the local market beforehand. During the trek, we chatted with Adi about all aspects of Balinese life from families, religion, and traditions, to marriage, schools, and agriculture. He showed us local plants and farming techniques used in Sidemen along the way.

bali day tours from ubud

Book Now: Sidemen Trekking Tour (the one we did)

After your morning out in the rice paddies, stick around to enjoy more of Sidemen. Grab lunch from one of the restaurants overlooking the rice terraces in Sidemen village (we liked Warung Wisma Bojana ).

bali day tours from ubud

In the afternoon, head to Gembleng Waterfall , a unique waterfall with natural infinity pools near the top where you can take a refreshing dip after your morning trek. The pools also make for a great photo with the amazing jungle views in the background.

Around 1 hour drive north of Sidemen is Pura Besakih , Bali’s biggest and most important temple. If you don’t mind the drive, it’s a great addition to your day trip and you can return to Ubud via Kintamani instead.

🚕 Hire a Private Driver

Private drivers are the best way to get around in Bali. The safest ways to book are through your hotel, a friend’s recommendations, or this private driver booking form.

bali day tours from ubud

Another of our favourite day trips from Ubud is Bedugul in Bali’s central highlands. The cooler, mountainous region offers stunning natural landscapes and is home to three of Bali’s four major lakes.

Bedugul’s most iconic attraction is Pura Ulun Danu Beratan (pictured above), also known as the floating temple because its pagodas appear to magically float on the surface of Lake Beratan at high tide.

The temple complex itself is a bit too touristy for us, so we recommend enjoying it from the lake instead. We hired a Jukung (a traditional Indonesian rowing boat) to explore the lake and temple, which was a much more peaceful and unique experience. We explain how to do this in our full guide to Pura Ulun Danu Beratan .

bali day tours from ubud

With so many things to do, you’ll struggle to fit everything into a one day trip. But here are some other activities to consider:

  • Bali Botanic Gardens – Indonesia’s largest botanic garden with a collection of orchids, a huge cacti house, and a tropical rainforest trail. You could easily spend a few hours here. ㅤ
  • Handara Gate – A popular photo spot that makes a good alternative to the Gates of Heaven . ㅤ
  • Bali Farm House – A new attraction (we’ve not visited ourselves yet) with children’s play areas and farm animals including ponies, pigs, goats, and alpacas. ㅤ
  • Rumah Gemuk Bali – A huge glass house filled with greenery and vibrant flowers where you can enjoy a cute picnic.

See our full guide to things to do in Bedugul for more information.

5. Nusa Dua

bali day tours from ubud

Nusa Dua is one of Bali’s most luxurious resort areas, filled with amazing 5* beachfront hotels. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach day trip from Ubud, it’s a great choice.

The resort area offers stunning white sand beaches with gentle waves for swimming, a lovely promenade to walk or cycle along, and the two “islands” with gardens and parkland.

Our favourite activity in Nusa Dua is the Devdan Show, a mesmerising cultural performance that takes you through the diverse islands of Indonesia, featuring dance, acrobatics, and special effects. The show runs three days per week so organise your day trip accordingly and buy your tickets online for a better price.

bali day tours from ubud

Our perfect day trip to Nusa Dua would look something like this:

  • Visit Museum Pacifika
  • Explore Dharma Island and Peninsula Island
  • Spend the afternoon on Mengiat Beach
  • Shopping & Dinner at The Bali Collection
  • Watch the Devdan Show

All of these attractions are located within the central ITDC district in Nusa Dua, so you don’t need a private driver for the day. Use Grab or Gojek to travel to Nusa Dua, then everything else is walkable.

You can get from Ubud to Nusa Dua in as little as 1hr30 using the Mandara Toll Road.

bali day tours from ubud

The Tanjung Benoa peninsula, just north of Nusa Dua, is known for watersports , with everything from parasailing to jet skis and banana boats. Check here for booking information, but keep in mind that the watersports area is not walkable from central Nusa Dua.

6. Waterbom

bali day tours from ubud

Around an hour south of Ubud is Waterbom, Bali’s biggest water park. The huge park is packed with many thrilling water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, and water playgrounds for kids.

If you’re an adrenaline seeker, the Climax has to be one of the scariest rides at Waterbom. You’ll wait in a small capsule until the trap door swings open and drops you onto the slide at full speed. It’s not for the faint-hearted!

Whether you’re travelling as a family, a couple, or a group of friends, the park is suitable for everyone and every occasion – we even spent Christmas Day here last year!

bali day tours from ubud

Waterbom closes at 6pm, so we always aim to arrive early to make the most of our tickets. There are more than enough activities for a full day out. Plus there are restaurants and a swim-up bar to keep you well-fuelled all day long.

You can call a Grab or Gojek taxi to drop you at Waterboom and pick you back up. We recommend buying your ticket online in advance to save 15% compared to getting it at the gate.

Book Now: Waterbom Tickets (with online discount)

7. Nusa Penida

bali day tours from ubud

Just a short ferry ride from the mainland, Nusa Penida is one of Bali’s most famous and most photographed tourist destinations. The island is blessed with pristine white sand beaches and a dramatic rugged coastline.

If your itinerary allows, we recommend staying over for a few nights to properly experience the island. But many people choose to visit on a day trip too.

To take a day trip to Nusa Penida, you’ll need to drive from Ubud to Sanur Harbour (taking between 1 hour to 1hr30 depending on traffic), then take a 30 minute ferry across. You can prebook your ferry here .

The ferries to Penida start at 6:30am, while the final return ferry departs around 5pm, so you’ll need to start your day trip early.

bali day tours from ubud

Keep in mind that Penida is the biggest of the Nusa Islands and almost twice the size of the Bukit Peninsula. With just one day, it’s best to choose either the East or the West to explore. If you try to see a bit of everything, you’ll spend most of your day driving around on bumpy, uneven roads.

Here’s what you can expect from each side of the island:

  • East Penida – This is our favourite side as it’s a little quieter. It’s home to Goa Giri Putri (a huge underground temple) and several beautiful beaches such as Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. You can also stop by the new Cactus Beach Club which we really enjoyed. ㅤ
  • West Penida – The west side of the island is where most of the island’s iconic sites are found, including Kelingking Beach (the one that looks like a T-rex) and Angels Billabong. You can find some hidden gems over here, but most day-trippers like to stick with the highlights.

We recommend adding a snorkelling tour to your itinerary. The Nusa Islands are home to some of the most incredible snorkelling spots we’ve visited with huge schools of colourful fish and giant Manta Rays.

bali day tours from ubud

To get around the island, most people tend to pre-organise a private driver who will meet you when you arrive. But we usually hire a scooter from Doel Rental near the harbour and drive ourselves.

8. Nusa Lembongan

bali day tours from ubud

Next to Nusa Penida is the smaller and more laid-back island of Nusa Lembongan . This enchanting little island is one of our favourite spots for a peaceful getaway, with its pristine white sand beaches, vibrant marine life, and famous mangroves.

Nusa Lembongan is connected to Nusa Ceningan via a big yellow bridge. Cross it on foot or scooter to enjoy the Blue Lagoon, cliff jumping spots, and the brand-new Klyf Beach Club .

As with Nusa Penida, you’ll need to catch a ferry from Sanur Harbour. You can pre-book ferry tickets here .

bali day tours from ubud

On Lembongan, the ferries drop off/pick up on Jungutbatu Beach, the island’s longest and most popular beach with several lovely bars and cafes. While you can spend the day here, we think it’s better to get out and explore the island.

The best way to get around on Nusa Lembongan is to rent a scooter or buggy and drive yourself. The island is small and easy to self-navigate.

We’d suggest an itinerary like this:

  • Snorkeling, Kayaking, and/or Boat Ride at Mangrove Point
  • Brunch at Jungutbatu Beach
  • Devils Tear
  • Dream Beach
  • Yellow Bridge and Seaweed Farms
  • Blue Lagoon

bali day tours from ubud

Hiring drivers in Nusa Lembongan is much less common than elsewhere in Bali as the roads aren’t made for cars. If you don’t want to drive yourself around, it may be better to pre-book a full-day guided tour from Bali .

Between museums, markets, yoga classes, waterfalls, and delicious restaurants, you'd easily be forgiven for spending the majority of your vacation time there. But if you've got a day (or two) to spare, there's much to see on a day trip out of the city, from photogenic beaches to cultural experiences. Because the island is somewhat small, Ubud is a great place to base yourself if you want to explore Bali's diverse offerings.

Remember: Ubud's traffic can be quite heavy, so try to avoid driving into the city during mid-afternoon whenever possible. For the nearby sites, it's often quicker to travel by rental scooter rather than taxi. For destinations further away on the island, you can rent a car or hire a vehicle and driver for the day. You'll find many tourist vehicle services listed on sites like Viator and AirBnB Experiences . Taxis are usually an option, too.

Tirta Gangga Water Palace & Gates of Heaven: A Photographer’s Dream

Unlike many of Bali's temples and palaces , Tirta Gangga is relatively new, built in 1948. While the palace is closed to the public, the main draws are the gardens, water features, and pools filled with colorful koi. There are several small shops outside the palace, as well as a few cafes on the grounds.

The palace is 6 miles from the Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple, which gets‎ extremely crowded. The wait to snap a photo between the gates can be an hour or more. Visit the Gates first thing in the morning (before 7 a.m.) to have the shortest wait. Entrance to Tirta Gangga is 30,000 rupiah for foreigners while Lempuyang Temple is donation based, though you'll need to rent a sarong for 10,000 rupiah.

Getting There: Tirta Gangga is 38 miles from Ubud, but traffic can make the drive take more than 2 hours. There are coffee plantations along the way if you need a mid-drive pick-me-up.

Travel Tip: Go early or late to Tirta Gangga if you want photos without dozens of people in the background. It's a popular site for Instagram photoshoots.

Mount Batur: Catch a Tropical Sunrise

Travelers who don't mind early mornings can catch the sunrise from Mount Batur's summit 5,633 feet (1,717 meters) above sea level. The hike is only about 2 miles each way, but you'll gain about 1,700 feet (518 meters) of elevation, making it moderately challenging. Most hikers should be able to do it in 2 hours or less with appropriate footwear and plenty of water.

Getting There: You'll want a guide for this hike, so the most hassle-free way to summit Mount Batur is to join in on a guided trip in Ubud that includes transportation. Otherwise, it's an hour drive to the trailhead, where you can hire a local guide or join in on an already-existing group.

Travel Tip : You don't need to do this hike at sunrise, but most people do. The hike can be excruciatingly hot mid-day.

Tulamben: Dive on Intact Shipwrecks

Certified scuba divers should book a trip to Tulamben, where not one but two sunken ships await them. The USAT Liberty is one of the easiest wreck dives in the world as it’s accessible from shore and rarely has a current. Advanced divers should combine that wreck with a dive on the Boga, also called the Kubu. It houses sunken Buddha statues, pottery, and an actual car. Not certified? No problem. You can take an intro to scuba class or opt to snorkel on the USAT Liberty as its mast is near the surface.

Getting There: Tulamben’s dive sites are around 2 hours from Ubud. Since you need a guide to dive, it’s easiest to book a dive package with a certified operator that includes transportation, gear, a guide, and (usually) lunch and snacks.

Travel Tip: There are several dive sites in Tulamben, including reefs and drift dives. While the USAT Liberty is the most popular dive, it’s certainly not your only option.

Sekumpul and Gitgit Waterfalls: Go Chasing Waterfalls

You can't leave Bali without visiting at least one waterfall, and Sekumpul is the perfect choice for a dip in a dreamy swimming hole. North of Ubud, it's one of Bali's highest falls and close to picturesque (and popular) Gitgit Falls. If you haven't booked a tour in advance, you'll need to hire a mandatory guide in the Sekumpul waterfall parking lot. The cost depends on whether you'd like to view the waterfall or trek down to it. If you choose to trek, expect a 30-minute walk from the parking lot to the falls. A visit to Gitgit does not require a guide.

Getting There: Sekumpul is 45 miles north of Ubud and Gitgit Falls is about 12 miles west of that.

Travel Tip: You don't need a guide to visit Gitgit, though enterprising scammers may try to sell you an expensive entry ticket in the parking lot. Ignore them and walk about 15 minutes towards the waterfall where you'll find an official ticket booth, plus a few small shops.

West Bali National Park: Snorkel and Trek the Day Away

Birdwatching may not sound thrilling, but it’s hard not to be captivated by the more than 150 different species of birds living in this massive park. Life underwater is equally diverse, so if hiking isn’t your thing, join in on a boat snorkeling trip around Menjangan island. Park entry is 200,000 rupiah per person with extra fees for activities like guided hikes or snorkeling.

Getting There: The National Park is about 85 miles from Ubud. It’s best to leave early to beat traffic and have the full day to snorkel, trek, spot wildlife, and relax on the beaches. If you’re passionate about birdwatching, plan to leave Ubud by 4 a.m. to see the birds when they’re most active.

Travel Tip: There’s nowhere to buy food or drinks in the park, so bring everything you’ll need with you (including extra water if you’re planning to hike).

Bangli: Stoll Through a Traditional Village

For a trip close to home, spend the day in Bangli, just 14 miles from Ubud. There’s plenty to do in the small town, including the rarely crowded Kehen Temple, the 17-acre Penglipuran bamboo forest, and the traditional Balinese village of Penglipuran. And if you break a sweat while sightseeing, end your trip with a dip in the swimming holes at Tibumana and Kuning waterfalls. Entry fees to Kehen Temple and the town of Penglipuran are 30,000 rupiah a piece. Kuning is 20,000 rupiah; Tibumana is 10,000 rupiah. Be prepared for short and steep walks to each swimming hole.

Getting There: Because Bangli is so close to Ubud, the easiest and cheapest way to get there is via scooter. Otherwise, it should be easy to find a taxi in Ubud willing to take you for 150,000 rupiah or less.

Travel Tip: Tourism is the main economic driver in Penglipuran. Consider giving locals who invite you into their homes a small tip to show your appreciation.

Gianyar: Prepare to Get Wet (and Hold on Tight!)

Central Bali is mountainous and covered in rivers and waterfalls, so it’s not surprising that there’s plenty of great whitewater rafting. Most rafting trips start in Gianyar, about 25 minutes by car from Ubud. Several companies run whole and half-day rafting trips on the Ayung River. The rapids in this area are class II and III, so you’ll likely be soaked by the end. You can book a trip in advance online or through one of the tour booking stands in downtown Ubud.

Getting There: Most rafting tours will include pick up from Ubud and surrounding areas. Otherwise, it's a quick 8-mile scooter ride to Gianyar.

Travel Tip: Before booking a tour from a roadside tour operator, it's worth doing a quick search online to make sure the rafting operator is reputable, safe, and provides proper safety and flotation equipment before booking.

Canggu: Learn to Surf and Hit the Club

Ubud is home to plenty of organic food, yoga classes, and meditation workshops. So if you want to change things up for a day, head to Canggu in the southwest of Bali. Canggu still retains some of its surfer-and-acai-bowl vibes, but in the last decade, dozens of beach clubs and bars have opened along the coastline. It’s the go-to spot in Bali for a morning surf lesson, afternoon sunbathing, and evening beach parties. Beach club costs can range from free to 300,000 rupiah or more per person.

Getting There: Some all-day surf packages will include pickup from your accommodations. Otherwise, you can drive yourself on a motorbike or grab a taxi from downtown Ubud. It should take 45 minutes to an hour to get there.

Travel Tip: For a serious party, head to Finns , the area’s most popular beach club. It gets crowded, so you may want to reserve a daybed in advance.

Nusa Lembongan: Snorkel With Manta Rays

A trip to Nusa Lembongan will be an all-day event from Ubud, but it’s worth checking out if Bali seems a little too crowded and touristy. You can snorkel, scuba dive, and sail along the island’s coast. It’s also home to massive manta rays, often visible from the water’s surface. Getting here from Ubud will involve a drive to ports at Sanur or Padang Bai, then a 30-minute boat ride to the island. It makes an excellent overnight trip, but you can do it a long day, too.

Getting There: Most people opt to do full-day tours organized around snorkeling, sailing or diving , as nearly all will pick you up in Ubud and arrange your transportation around the island.

Travel Tip: If you’re not going with a tour, buy your fast boat tickets in advance. They take around 30 minutes versus 90 minutes for a budget ferry. Be prepared to walk through knee-deep water when exiting the boat.
