Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and now Bangladesh: What's going on in India's neighbourhood?
N EW DELHI: The last three years have seen tectonic shifts in South Asia politics, specifically India's neighbours that have witnessed drastic regime changes following a power vacuum, political upheavals or mass protests.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM9xFuoPt2o
From the Taliban's takeover in Afghanistan in August 2021 to Imran Khan's ouster as prime minister in Pakistan in April 2022, and from massive protests in Sri Lanka leading to Gotabaya Rajapaksa fleeing the country in July 2022 to ongoing unrest in Bangladesh that has already led to the resignation of PM Sheikh Hasina, the political dynamics in South Asia have been totally upended in just three years.
Afghanistan: Taliban takeover after US exit
The political upheaval in Afghanistan began with the Taliban's swift military offensive in 2021, culminating in their takeover of Kabul on August 15. This marked the end of the US-backed Afghan government, which had been in place since the US invasion in 2001.
The offensive was initiated on May 1, 2021, coinciding with the withdrawal of US troops, and it rapidly escalated as the Taliban captured key provincial capitals and territories across the country.
The fall of Kabul occurred with little resistance, leading to the flight of President Ashraf Ghani and the establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan once again.
Even US intelligence and defence agencies were left shocked by how quickly the Taliban had recaptured the country
Since the takeover, Afghanistan has faced a dire humanitarian crisis and worsening ties with Pakistan over terror-related incidents. Islamabad has repeatedly blamed Kabul of harbouring terrorist outfits, which have increasingly carried out massive and fatal attacks in Pakistan border areas.
The economy has contracted significantly, with estimates suggesting a 30% decline since the Taliban's return to power. Over 28 million people, or two-thirds of the population, require urgent humanitarian assistance, with 17 million facing acute hunger.
The Taliban's strict interpretation of Islamic law has led to severe restrictions on women's rights, including bans on education and employment, which have further exacerbated the economic situation.
The international community's response has been largely critical, with many countries imposing sanctions and withholding recognition of the Taliban government. Though the Indian government has yet to officially recognise the Taliban regime as the official Afghanistan government, trade ties continue to be stable.
Pakistan: Imran Khan's ouster amid anti-army protests
In Pakistan, the political landscape shifted dramatically with the ousting of Prime Minister Imran Khan in April 2022. Khan, who came to power in 2018, was removed through a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly, which was seen by many as a culmination of political maneuvering involving the military and opposition parties.
Khan's relationship with the military, which had initially supported him, soured over various issues, including his attempts to assert civilian control over military appointments and foreign policy decisions.
The military's withdrawal of support was pivotal in his political downfall, as they have traditionally played a significant role in Pakistan's governance. His ouster was followed by a series of legal challenges and accusations of corruption, which Khan and his supporters claimed were politically motivated.
Following his removal, Khan's political struggles intensified. He was arrested in August 2023 on charges related to corruption and inciting violence against the military, leading to widespread protests from his supporters.
The political climate in Pakistan remains tense, with Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), facing significant repression.
Pakistan's economy is in a precarious state, grappling with high inflation, energy shortages, a depreciating currency and a looming debt crisis largely due to massive loans from China for projects related to the Belt and Road Initiative.
The political instability has further complicated economic recovery efforts, with international investors wary of the situation. The Shehbaz Sharif government has secured financial assistance from the IMF, but the conditions tied to such aid has required stringent economic reforms that have fuelled public dissatisfaction.
Sri Lanka: Mass protests force Rajapaksa to flee
In July 2022, Sri Lanka experienced unprecedented mass protests that led to the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The protests were fueled by widespread discontent over the government's mishandling of the economy, which had plunged into crisis due to a combination of factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic, rising global fuel prices, increasing debt to China and mismanagement of public resources.
The economic crisis in Sri Lanka manifested in severe shortages of essential goods, including food, fuel, and medicine.
Inflation skyrocketed, and the government imposed strict measures, such as power cuts and fuel rationing, which further enraged the populace.
The protests began as peaceful demonstrations but escalated into a larger movement demanding Rajapaksa's resignation, culminating in the storming of government buildings and his eventual flight from the country.
Following Rajapaksa's departure, the new government led by Ranil Wickremesinghe has faced the daunting task of addressing the economic crisis and restoring public trust.
The government has sought assistance from international financial institutions and implemented austerity measures to stabilise the economy. However, public discontent remains high, and protests continue as citizens demand accountability and transparency from their leaders.
The country will be holdings its first presidential election since the unrest, on September 21.
Bangladesh: Hasina resigns, flees to India
On August 5, 2024, Bangladesh plunged into a political crisis after PM Sheikh Hasina suddenly fled to India after weeks of nationwide protests turned violent in which at least 300 people were killed.
The protests, initially ignited by students opposing a government employment quota system, rapidly evolved into widespread demonstrations against Hasina's administration due to allegations of corruption, economic mismanagement, and harsh crackdown on dissent. The discontent among the population was exacerbated by rising inflation and economic challenges, similar to those faced by neighboring countries.
On the day of her resignation, Hasina reportedly fled the country as protesters advanced toward her residence, defying a nationwide curfew.
Subsequently, army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman declared that a temporary government would be formed to restore order.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday, announced the dissolution of the country's parliament to make way for the formation of an interim administration.
In further development, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia was released from jail.
Zia, 78, a former Bangladeshi prime minister, is confined to a hospital due to poor health. In 2018, she was found guilty of corruption and given a 17-year prison sentence.
She and Hasina had a long-standing feud and she was accused of abusing her position of authority by stealing almost $250,000 in donations intended for a trust for an orphanage.
The situation in the country remains tense as authorities try to cobble together an interim government.
Zia and the BNP have historically been seen as less friendly towards India compared to her Hasina and her Awami League party.
The BNP's anti-India stance is seen as inspired by the party's founder Ziaur Rahman and his desire to distance Bangladesh from India's influence. The party has historically been closer to Pakistan and China, with the ISI allegedly supporting Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh to install a pro-Pakistan government during BNP rule.

Before Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina, how leaders of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan fled amid turmoil
In recent years, south asian leaders — sheikh hasina, the rajapaksa brothers and ashraf ghani — have left their home countries at the peak of major political and economic crises. here is what happened..
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left her country on Monday (August 5) amid scenes of chaos, as weeks-long protests against her regime forced her out of power. She reached India and it is speculated that she may ultimately travel to London, where some of her family members live.
The secrecy around her movement and instances of looting at her residence in Dhaka seemed similar to what played out in Sri Lanka in 2022. As a major economic crisis hit the country, public anger manifested into protests in Colombo. The Rajapaksa brothers, then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, left the island nation.
A year before that, Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani fled as the Taliban took over. Here is a look at the three major instances of recent political turmoil in South Asia, the circumstances, and what followed in the cases of Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
1. Bangladesh
For weeks, student protests had rocked Bangladesh . On June 5, the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh ruled that 30% reservation would be restored in government jobs for the descendants of Bangladesh’s freedom fighters.
This led to anger among youth, given the recent economic downturn and lack of job opportunities, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic. Even after the Appellate Division of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court said the quota would be significantly reduced in July, the protests continued.
With more than 300 people killed in the agitation, and critical comments from Hasina about the protestors, the movement gradually became more anti-Hasina in its character. She had led the country since 2009 and was termed an authoritarian over the years for not holding free and fair elections and jailing opposition leaders. Meanwhile, Hasina blamed opposition parties like the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the Jamaat-e-Islami, and their student groups for instigating the protestors.
Ultimately, as public sentiment turned completely against her, Hasina left. The army has said it will step in and take responsibility, but the country’s future remains uncertain. Hasina may seek political asylum in Europe.
2. Sri Lanka
Years of economic mismanagement culminated in a major economic crisis in 2022. It led to a foreign currency shortage, making it difficult for the Sri Lankan government to pay for the import of basic items like oil. Prices of everyday goods and food items soared, with electricity cuts for long periods.
The Aragalaya, the Sinhalese word for “struggle”, became the name of the largely leaderless, anti-government movement that emerged then. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and PM Mahinda Rajapaksa, major players in Sri Lankan politics for decades, faced calls for resignation. Protestors entered the official Presidential residence, bathed in the swimming pool and took away the President’s belongings.
Gotabaya left the country for Maldives and then reached Singapore. Soon after, he tendered his resignation. He also stayed in Thailand for some time before returning to Sri Lanka around two months later. Reuters reported then that Sri Lankan immigration officials stopped his brother and former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa from flying out.
Former PM Ranil Wickremesinghe assumed power as the acting President in 2022. He would eventually be selected as the President by the Sri Lankan Parliament. In two years, the country has attempted to strike loan deals with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and countries like India and China. Recently, presidential elections were announced to be held in September this year.
In 2023, Wickremesinghe’s office issued a statement on the looting of items from the President’s house: “Various valuable artefacts and archaeological items went missing, including coats of arms associated with former governors and presidents of Sri Lanka.” It offered an amnesty scheme for people to return the items.
3. Afghanistan
In 2021, the United States Army and NATO forces withdrew from Afghanistan after two decades of military presence, and the Taliban took over. The swiftness of the events took the world by surprise, even though the Islamist militant group had been advancing through other major cities before establishing control over Kabul on August 15.
Years of attempts to build lasting institutions for democracy and economic development had not yielded results for the Afghan government. The Taliban, meanwhile, regrouped and continued to maintain its fundamentalist ideology.
As the capture of Kabul seemed complete, videos showed many citizens going past barricades at the capital’s airport in desperate attempts to make it onto aeroplanes out of the country. Some even clung to the wings and tail of the aircraft and fell to their deaths. While the economic condition in Afghanistan had been difficult, the idea of a return to the previous Taliban rule between 1996 and 2001 was seen as a major step back.
President Ashraf Ghani also left, and visuals showed Taliban leaders carrying weapons inside the presidential palace. Ghani was criticised for leaving Afghanistan at a crucial juncture but has since claimed he sensed an imminent threat to his life. Later, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation confirmed that Ghani and his family had been welcomed on humanitarian grounds.

Iran promises to take severe action against Israel for killing a Hamas leader in Tehran. The US stands by Israel and hopes Iran's retaliation won't disrupt ceasefire discussions. Israel and Hamas are urged to meet for talks on August 15. Iran's UN mission clarifies that their response is not linked to the ceasefire and they have the right to defend themselves.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, 1st T20I - Live Cricket Score, Commentary
A rather one-sided clash in the end. Not what you generally expect when these two teams clash in the shortest format. Bangladesh were too clinical in all departments and have gone up 1-0 in this two-match T20I series. Expect Afghanistan to come back with a bang. Should make the final game of the series an interesting affair. Do join us for that one. Until next time with more cricketing coverage, it's a goodbye from us. Cheers!
Mahmudullah | Bangladesh captain: It was pleasing to see how the boys fought out there. With the bat, ball and the energy (in the field) was superb to see. I think yes (whether 155 was defendable). We were looking to get 155-160. Was a challenging total on this pitch and the bowlers bowled very well. Nasum especially. Liton batted very well too. Throughout his innings, he was very pleasing to watch. Afif also chipped in. We'd want to keep this going and hopefully we can win the next game too.
Nasum Ahmed | Player of the Match: The target given to me was to concede a maximum of 12 runs in the powerplay. I conceded just 10 and also got four wickets in my entire spell. I love challenges in the powerplay, just stuck to my basics and tried to dry up the runs.
Mohammad Nabi | Afghanistan captain: The boys bowled really well, it was a good batting pitch. When we restricted them to 155, we were confident of chasing it. We threw our wickets in the powerplay and it put pressure on us. Losing four wickets in the first six overs put us on the back foot. We'll try our level best for the next game.
18:15 Local Time, 12:15 GMT, 17:45 IST: A win by 60-plus runs - that's some hammering in a T20 game. The surface had nothing to do with Afghanistan's meek batting display. They were simply outplayed and didn't help themselves with some poor shot selection. Nasum, as he generally does these days, wrecked havoc in the powerplay and before Afghanistan knew it, they were four down and were playing catch up from then onwards. The other Bangladesh bowlers continued with the good work and just refused to give any hit-me balls to the batters. Only three batters crossed double figures - a stat that should tell you the story. It did seem at the halfway mark that Bangladesh were below-par with their total but their bowlers made full use of the extra bounce in this Dhaka pitch and made it into a comfortably match-winning total. Afghanistan's batting approach was bizarre, but so was their team selection, going with barely any specialist batters.
Shoriful Islam to Mujeeb, out Caught by Afif Hossain!! Bangladesh complete a thumping win ! The final formalities have been completed. Dug in short by Shoriful, slower ball though and Mujeeb is deceived by the lack of pace. Goes hard on the pull, gets it off the top half of the blade and picks out deep mid-wicket. Mujeeb c Afif Hossain b Shoriful Islam 4(4) [4s-1]
Shoriful Islam to Mujeeb, THATS OUT!! Caught!!
Shoriful Islam to Mujeeb, FOUR , fullish length, Mujeeb backs away and heaves it away through mid-wicket. Clean connection and deep mid-wicket can't get across
Fazalhaq Farooqi, right handed bat, comes to the crease
Shoriful Islam to Qais Ahmad, out Caught&Bowled!! Shoriful has his revenge instantly! Dug in short, totally cramps Ahmad who was down the track looking to hoick this away. The extra bounce chokes him and he can only skew this straight up in the air. Shoriful calls for it and takes the skier with ease. Just a wicket away now. Qais Ahmad c and b Shoriful Islam 8(9) [4s-1]
Shoriful Islam to Qais Ahmad, THATS OUT!! Caught&Bowled!!
Shoriful Islam to Qais Ahmad, FOUR , back of a length, Ahmad stands tall and lfat-bats it well past the bowler. Mid-off tries to get across with a dive but fails to stop it
Mustafizur to Mujeeb, no run, very full and angling across, Mujeeb looks for the booming drive and is beaten
Mustafizur to Mujeeb, no run, shortish and outside off, Mujeeb hangs his bat at it and gets beaten on the outside edge. Late caught behind appeal from Mustafizur but there was no sound
Mustafizur to Qais Ahmad, 1 run, slower ball, Ahmad premeditates and helps this away to deep square leg
Mujeeb Ur Rahman, right handed bat, comes to the crease
Mustafizur to Azmatullah, out Caught by Mahmudullah!! Miscued slice, straight up and only as far as mid-off. Was an off-cutter, angling across Omarzai who looks to slog across the line. Can't do that against Mustafizur, his cutters grip so much and induce the false stroke and that's what happens here as well. Azmatullah c Mahmudullah b Mustafizur 20(18) [4s-2 6s-1]
Mustafizur to Azmatullah, THATS OUT!! Caught!!
Mustafizur to Qais Ahmad, 1 run, another slower ball, dipping full toss and Ahmad adjusts in time to work this past square leg
Mustafizur to Qais Ahmad, no run, slower yorker, dips late and Ahmad somehow digs it out
