Full list of the British Travel Awards gold winners for 2023 as chosen by the public with more than 1.5 million votes including Jet2, P&O Cruises, Wetherspoons

Ready, Jet set, go…for 11 golds to Jet2 and Jet2holidays at the prestigious 2023 British Travel Awards (BTAs).

The Leeds-based sister firms took off with the biggest haul of prizes at the glittering gala night in Battersea Evolution, London, including Best Large Travel Company for Summer Sun Holidays, Winter Sun Holidays, Family Holidays and Luxury Holidays plus Best Airline for Short-haul Flights and Best Airline for Economy Class Travel.

A record 1.56 million public votes were cast for the nation’s benchmark travel industry accolades as UK travelling consumers had their say in 76 award categories covering their 2023 leisure travel experiences and services.

Newmarket Holidays also triumphed, taking home an impressive eight golds in categories such as Best Travel Company for Escorted Group Holiday; Best Touring Holidays and Best for Safari Holidays plus for holidays to destinations including Central/Northern Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and Canada and USA.

Solmar Villas was next with a sterling seven golds including Best Medium Travel Company for Summer Sun, Winter Sun, Family, Villa and Tailor-Made Holidays.

On the water, P&O took Best Cruise Line for Family Holidays, Hurtigruten won Best Cruise Line for Expedition Voyages, Viking won Best Cruise Line for River Cruise Holidays and Cunard won Best Cruise Line for Ultra-Luxurious Holiday.

Brittany Ferries won Best Medium Travel Company to Western Europe, P&O Ferries took Best Operator for Short Sea/ Mini Cruises,

It’s no secret Brits love a cheeky drink at an airport bar ahead of a stupid o’clock holiday flight and now it’s official - Spoons is our bar venue of choice.

The BTAs had two new categories for 2023 and Wetherspoons claimed Best Airport Retailer for Food and Beverage, while Boots are taking off with Best Airport Retailer for Consumer Goods,

Also in the aviation world, London's Heathrow was voted Best Large UK Airport for Leisure Travel, with East Midlands winning in the medium category.

Best Airline for Low-Cost Flights was easyjet, with Emirates taking Best Airline for Long Haul Flights and Best Airline for Business Class Travel. For the 13th year running APH (Airport Parking & Hotels) won Best Company for Airport Parking.

On the roads, Avis reclaimed the gold for Best Company for Car Hire, Shearings picked up three golds for Best Large Company for Coach Holidays, Best Large Travel Company for Touring Holidays, and Best Large Company for UK Coach/Touring Holidays.

In the medium company category Leger Holidays held on to Best for Coach Holidays and also won Best for Special Interest Holidays. Brightwater Holidays won Best Travel Company for Coach Holidays in the small company category.

In other gold categories, Travelzoo won Best Travel website for Travel Deals; Hays Travel won three Golds for Best National Travel Retailer, Best Agency for Cruise Holidays and Best Retailer of Forex/Travel Money and in a surprise twist, nominated for their first ever British Travel Awards, Lapland Specialist tour operator Santa Claus Trips was voted Best Small Travel Company for Family Holidays and Best Small Travel Company to Central/Northern Europe.

BTA director of events and partnerships Lorraine Barnes Burton said: “This year was a record in the 15-year history of the British Travel Awards with more than one and a half million votes.

“My sincere thanks go to the readers who took the trouble to vote and ultimately it is you, the travelling public, who decide the winners by voting for the travel companies you consider the best in the business.

“When you see the British Travel Awards winner logos on brochures, websites and social media posts you can be sure you are travelling with tried and tested travel companies - as voted for by you, the all-important travelling public.”

Since 2008 the British Travel Awards has been polling public opinion on leisure travel companies and the award accreditations are determined solely by the number of public votes cast after security software has flagged for investigation any spurious or suspect voting activity.

The 2023 voting period ran between June 19 and October 1 and 420,453 voters cast 1,561,370 votes.

All BTA voters were entered in a draw for a bumper travel prize jackpot worth around £47,700, with cruises, villa holidays, ferry crossings, holiday vouchers, Europe trips, airport hotels and parking, staycations and more to be won.

British Travel Awards 2024 Season Kicks-off nominations now open

14 February 2024:  Nominations have now opened for the 2024 British Travel Awards (BTA) and travel companies can put themselves forward to be included on the 2024 consumer facing voting form.   This year there are 82 award categories, covering a comprehensive range of leisure travel experiences and services, with, in the interests of fairness, 46 of the categories graded by company size.

Time to nominate your company for listing on the BTA 2024 consumer voting form

1 February 2024:   Businesses operating in the leisure travel market have until 10 May to register their companies for listing on this year’s consumer voting form.

There are 82 award categories featuring a comprehensive range of holiday experiences and travel services. All holiday awards are graded by size so SMEs can be recognised by their customers. Register now to be featured across our online communications once your application is approved.

3 December 2023:  E-newsletter sent to 420,000 voters with link to our 48 page digital brochure. 2/3 December 2023:  Our consumer media partners - Reach PLC - published the names of this year’s winning companies in the travel section of the Saturday editions of the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Daily Star, Sunday People and online .

Throughout the voting cycle the British Travel Awards feature in weekly editorial columns across national newspaper titles with articles informing their readership of the draw prizes that can be won by voting.

The 23rd Annual

Wednesday 6th november 2024, the tate modern, about the awards.

Celebrating the best in travel for 23 years, the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards will spotlight the most-desirable destinations, tour operators and travel brands. This year the ceremony will be held at the iconic Tate Modern, in an evening that welcomes industry heavy-weights and esteemed guests. The awards are completely free to enter, and the winners will be decided by public vote from the Wanderlust readers. In 2023, over 91,000 readers took part. Voting will open again in summer, 2024. More details, including the categories and shortlist, will be announced shortly.

THE CEREMONY

Welcoming the world’s foremost leaders in travel, guests will enjoy behind-the-scenes tours of the Tate’s world-class collection of contemporary art, a reception taking over the Turbine Hall amidst Mira Lee’s 2024 special commission, gourmet cuisine, live entertainment, and an awards ceremony that will uniquely combine virtual reality, video, and sound. You may notice the awards ceremony has moved to Wednesday night, to coincide with second day of the World Travel Market in London.

Making Business Awards accessible to all

Free entry on all awards.

Most UK awards out there charge an entry fee (usually £99 - £200+) per category. With such a high barrier to entry, larger companies are often disproportionately represented. With Business Awards UK, there's zero risk in taking part. You only pay an Award Acceptance Fee if you win .

Quick and easy to apply

We've made the process sleek and simple so you don't have to spend hours on each application. Just select the categories you're interested in and complete one single submission form. You can also apply for as many categories as you like, and - should you win - choose which awards to accept or decline.

No costly awards ceremony

We do not hold an award ceremony. Our award winners tell us this is typically just an added expense for no real gain, with awards companies cashing in on sponsorship from entrants. Typical expenses are around £199+ per person to attend traditional ceremonies, with costs such as employee time lost, travel, food etc.

CUSTOM trophy

Our optional trophies are custom designed, and manufactured by the UK's premier trophy companies. All trophies are personalised with your company and/or individual winner's name, delivered free of charge to UK Mainland addresses. All award holders receive free digital badges to share on websites, email and social media.

There’s absolutely nothing to pay! Only entries that subsequently win the top award within their category will be charged. Finalist (runners up) awards will be offered for each category free of charge.

We encourage companies from all over the world to enter our awards, but you must do a significant amount of business with UK based companies to qualify. If we need to ask you any questions during judging, we’ll contact you via email to confirm the above.

There is no official limit on the amount of awards or award categories you can enter. Increase your chances of winning by applying for multiple awards and award categories.

In order to reduce bias on our part, we don’t run awards in areas / sectors in which we may have a commercial interest. 

Our private and public judging panel is composed of internal staff, guest/external industry experts. All judges need to declare any possible conflict of interest.

We follow a stringent scoring process which has been carefully designed to ensure entries are judged fairly and consistently within each category.

We are constantly reviewing our practices and procedures to further strengthen the process.

In April 2023, our public judges panel was launched.

We score entries on a number of areas but the key criteria is how different you are from others in your sector. We also check if an example/review/testimonial/case study is provided, quality of example provided and validity.

The best way to stand out is to be as succinct as possible while providing enough detail, with a specific example related to category.

If you win an award we’ll send you a private email (ahead of the official announcement) congratulating you on your achievement.

You will receive a link to an Award Acceptance Form where you can accept or decline your awards and select trophies.

We can only announce you as a winner if you accept the award and agree to be invoiced for your Award Acceptance Fee.

We will send you a NET 30 invoice for any fees. The invoice includes our bank details and options to pay by all major credit / debit cards using PayPal or Stripe.

No, we do not offer discounts on Award Acceptance Fees. To make our programme fair to all, we have a strict policy regarding discounts. Any sector specific, sponsor related or seasonal offers will be communicated to your privately.

The applications deadline will be announced and when this is reached, no additional applications will be accepted.

In most cases, the awards will be announced 30 days after the final deadline date.

We frequently launch new awards across additional sectors. The deadlines and scheduling may be different depending on the award so please visit the relevant award page or Shortlist page for more information, or shoot us an email/Live Chat message!

Trophies: We ship all trophies FREE to UK Mainland within 2 – 4 weeks of received payment. We are unable to ship any trophies until full payment of the invoice has been received. This is to prevent fraudulent use of the trophy and award. Any errors will be responded to within 24hrs of receipt of complaint, and trophies will be remade/resent (at our cost) should a trophy be received in error. Please note: remanufacture and redelivery can take up to 7 days.

You’ll only get an award if you deserve it (after all entries have been assessed and compared against our scoring matrix).

Even if you’re the only entry in a particular award category, we won’t automatically give you the award – we’d invite additional entries instead.

We’ll never accept any money or offer of payment upfront (before you are offered the award).

Yes. The prices displayed on the website are ex VAT. VAT will be charged at the point of payment.

The best of British celebrated – paving the way in a £28.6bn industry

On 23rd November 2023 in London, The British Educational Travel Association (BETA) honoured the businesses paving the way in the £28.6 billion UK youth, student and educational travel market at the British Youth Travel Awards. BETA – a not-for-profit member association –  represents over 120 organisations, some of which are the biggest and best-known businesses in the youth, student and educational travel industry.

Mark Henebury, Department for Business & Trade – when judging the awards said “Amazed by the fantastic innovations to reach new markets and customers. Excellent reflection of the sector itself.” Other  judges included; Janet Utterly, VisitBritain and Lethabo-Thabo Royds, World Travel & Tourism Council.

Winners included;  Camp America ,  Camp Leaders ,  First Travel Solutions ,  Kaya Responsible Travel ,  St Christopher’s Inn ,  StudentUniverse ,  Theatre Workout ,  Up at The O2  and  Warner Bros Studio Tour London , who were all celebrated at the award ceremony held at Sea Life London Aquarium.  View the full list of winners
