Learn more about Kazakhstan

Best time to visit kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan has a continental climate, which lends itself to extreme temperatures. In summer (June to August) it can climb above 96 degrees F and in winter (December to February) you can expect temperatures to be as low as -10 degrees F. Snow stays on the ground for almost half the year. The best time to travel is during spring (May to June) and autumn (September to November) when temperatures are mild. While it can rain at any time of year, the amount varies across the country. In the desert you’ll get very little, while in the mountains it’s best not to leave home without a rain jacket.

Top 5 Tastes of Kazakhstan

1. beshbarmak.

This is Kazakhstan’s national dish and a meat lover’s delight. Chunks of boiled mutton served on flat squares of pasta.

Get ready for sausage, Kazakh-style. Made with horsemeat, the sausage is cooked for two hours before being served with generous servings of onion.

Wash down your main course with a glass of fermented mare’s milk. It’s mildly alcoholic and has a fizzy sensation. Shubat is another version made with camel’s milk.

4. Baursaki

Try these fried, doughy balls of goodness alongside soup.

Make new friends wherever you go by sitting down and sharing a cup of shay. This black or green tea is a Kazakh staple.

Golden ring of Zhetysu tour Tour

Golden ring of Zhetysu tour

In June 2023 I took TourRadar’s 5 day Golden ring of Zhetysu tour with my husband, our guide was Vladimer. Our days in Kazakhstan were exceptional – the sites were unique and interesting but our trip was mainly so good because Vladimer is an exceptional guide. We visited all the sites as advertised (can’t even rank them – they were all great) and each day was an immense pleasure – mainly because Vladimer is so genuine, acutely customer-focused, and was always providing more. We expected a knowledgeable guide who would transport us safely to each site, but we didn’t anticipate a guide so dedicated to our comfort and enjoyment – for as long as we were awake and interested in doing more. Vladimer is attentive, a good listener, and was sensitive to our specific needs. We’re vegetarian (not easy in Kazakhstan), we were celebrating our 37th anniversary during our tour, we are both naturalists that want to see not only local fauna but also native flora. Vladimir was genuinely excited when he could surprise us with a new plant/animal sighting, create a spectacular and memorable anniversary (the entire day was filled with special moments) and immerse us in the culture of Kazakhstan (food, history, customs, and of course, the people). This tour and Vladimir, ‘hit it out of the park’. We’ve traveled to >70 countries and have experienced adventure in many places – we never expected such a fun undertaking on this trip. We’ll book with Tour Radar again (and request Vladimir) when we schedule our next ‘stans’ trip (or elsewhere). Thanks for a very special time in Kazakhastan!

The tour was very good, mostly because of the guides ( two of them at different points in time) who were knowledgeable and pleasant. The itinerary was also interesting. It was my first trip with Tourradar but it won't be the last, in fact, I have just booked a trip to Vietnam.

Kazakhstan - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Plan a holiday to Kazakhstan to see the marvelous Russian architecture

It might be the largest landlocked country in the world but spending holidays in Kazakhstan will not disappoint its visitors. From a rich history with Russia and the former Soviet Union, to being the modern dominant country of Central Asia economically, a trip to Kazakhstan will leave you in awe.

Tour Highlights

  • See the Russian influence in Kazakhstan in the city of Almaty ; with towers reminiscent of St. Petersburg or Moscow, the influence of Russia is clear in this city.
  • Experience green valleys, rushing rivers, snowcapped peaks and high-level glaciers at the Aksu-Zhabagyly Nature Reserve.
  • Feel the modern life explode from the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana.
  • Go to Turkistan to see the mausoleum of the first great Turkic Muslim holy man, Kozha Akhmed Yasaui.
  • From the nature reserve to the arid desert, Kazakhstan is filled with climate, one being the Mangistau region, a 400km stretch of desert.

Travel Tips

  • There are a wide variety of options for transit in Kazakhstan; from busses and taxis to trains and planes, there is a mode that will work for you.
  • Learn a little of both Kazakh and Russian. Russian will help you get around more, but Kazakh will impress the locals.
  • Cities are safe during the day, but there are a few that might be a little unsafe at night; travel at your own risk and discression.
  • Scams are common, so keep personal items close and if anyone asks about a lost wallet don’t give them money or show them yours.
  • Be careful while drinking, you might get arrested.
  • Drunk driving is a problem here; obey the laws and always wear your seat belt.

Travel Highlights of Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is double the size of the other four Central Asian countries combined and the distance from the West of the country to the East is as far as London to Istanbul. There are flights and trains connecting different parts of the country. Kazakhstan’s travel highlights are its vast steppes with their unique fauna and flora, trekking in the Tien Shan (“celestial mountains”) near Almaty, admiring modern architecture in the capital Astana, and strolling through Kazakhstan’s biggest city and former capital, Almaty. Visitors also get a sense of Central Asian Sufism at the ancient and beautiful Yassawi Mausoleum in Turkestan and can visit places that offer a reminder of the tragedies of the Soviet Union, such as the Stalinist labor camps (“Gulags”) memorial Alzhir nearby Astana. MONEY & COSTS:

The Kazakh currency is called the Tenge (KZT). The banking system in Kazakhstan is the most developed in Central Asia and in big cities there are many places to exchange money and to withdraw cash from ATMs using a variety of cards. We recommend bringing some cash in new USD bank notes of denominations of at least 20 USD. Small and old-looking bank notes are harder to exchange. Paying directly with a credit card is possible in most places. An emergency fund of around 500 USD in cash is always good to have during guided trips to Central Asia.

Kazakhstan is a multi-ethnic country with a long history of tolerance. Guests and locals are treated with respect and the whole country can be regarded as a very safe destination for travelers. That said, you are advised to wear a money belt, watch your belongings, avoid dark streets at night and take only official taxis. Your safety is our first priority at Kalpak Travel; we know and regularly assess all our Kazakh partners and we closely monitor political events.

ENTRY & EXIT:

Citizens of most Western countries do not need a visa for a stay of up to 30 days in Kazakhstan. To be sure whether you need a visa or not you can contact us. Any permits you might need for access to places that will be visited during your tour, we will provide them for you free of charge. As soon as we receive the deposit payment for your tour, we will confirm your booking and send you an email with important pre-departure information. Please read it carefully as it contains important information on customs regulations for Kazakhstan.

BEST TIME TO GO:

The climate of Kazakhstan is continental and dry in the majority of the country, including the largest cities. Summers are very hot with day temperatures between 30° and 40° Celsius and winters are extremely cold with strong winds. In the mountains, however, the weather is quite changeable. If you are planning to visit the mountains the best season is summer. Be aware, however, at high altitudes of 3000 meters or more it may even snow overnight during the summer. For cultural sightseeing tours, spring and autumn are the best seasons. Autumn is also the time when the country goes to harvest, meaning markets are full of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Do not drink water, unless it is bottled, filtered, or boiled. Do not use tap water for brushing your teeth or making ice either. Do not eat ice cream. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled. If you follow these basic rules, you are likely to avoid any health issues like traveler’s diarrhea. Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, and Tetanus are recommended vaccinations for Kazakhstan. Ensure you are fully insured for medical emergencies including repatriation. Medical services in Kazakhstan are basic at best.

He graduated from a local university (although he tells everyone about one college in the USA). This guy traveled Kazakhstan back and forth many times when he worked for a government nature protection agency. According to some people, he has personal contacts with some wolves, foxes, and bears living in the mountains and the steppes. He is not a guy who can work at some office. He loves nature exploration and discovery. Back in the 2010s he joined several nature expeditions to study Kazakh geography (one needs to verify). He tends to drive a lot away from the city and broke up many vehicles. To help the locals and the foreigners, he opens new tourist sites for the public on Google maps. Since he is on good terms with mother nature, he can help anyone explore nature at a deeper level. The guy is a steppe wolf. He runs his own channels on IG and YT.

Insights into Destination Preferences: Kazakhstan Registers 10.5 Million Outbound Tourists

By Nagima Abuova in Editor’s Picks , International , Tourism on 9 May 2024

ASTANA — According to the Bureau of National Statistics, the number of outbound tourists in Kazakhstan reached 10.5 million people in 2023. The tourism industry experts shed light on the evolving landscape of travel preferences among Kazakh tourists, at the recent international exhibition KITF 2024 in Almaty, reported Kazinform news agency.

According to Inna Ray, Chairwoman of the Turisik Kamkor (touristic care) Corporate Foundation, the primary destinations for Kazakh tourists are the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Türkiye and Egypt. Additionally, there has been an increasing flow of tourists to Vietnam and Thailand. Europe has become more accessible, with emerging destinations such as Prague and Milan due to enhanced air connectivity.

Factors influencing travel choices

“In tourism, the main thing is transport accessibility and the absence of visa formalities. We hope that European countries will simplify visa procedures in our country. It will be beneficial both for Kazakhstan and Europe,” said Ray, characterizing Kazakh tourists as high-quality tourists who prioritize comfort, top-tier hotels, exploration of new places and shopping.

Kazakhstan’s reputation as a source of high-quality tourists presents opportunities for collaboration and mutual benefit with other countries, particularly in Europe and Asia.

Representatives of travel agencies and tour operators said destinations such as Türkiye, UAE and Egypt consistently experience high demand. Ray explained the appeal of warm destinations with a demand for relaxation from challenging climates, particularly in northern Kazakhstan.

“In general, our tourists choose visa-free destinations for holidays more often,” said Rashad Bunyadov, CEO of ANEX Tour Kazakhstan.

Rising demand for Southeast Asian destinations

“Vietnam and Koh Samui Island in Thailand are gaining popularity,” said Anna Zagoruyko, Director of Kompas Tour Operator. She explained the constantly rising demand among Kazakh tourists, who are shifting their mindsets and priorities to experience a quality vacation.

Lyudmila Brown, Regional Director of Sales at Fun&Sun Touroperator, added Indonesia, Bali, Maldives and Hainan Island in China to the list. She highlighted that AirAsia currently offers flights via Kuala Lumpur to Denpasar, Bali, facilitating this sought-after destination.

The reopening of borders in Southeast Asian countries after the pandemic has led to a surge in demand. The pent-up desire among travelers to visit destinations such as Thailand, Vietnam and Bali, coupled with the relatively affordable cost of living in Southeast Asia.

Bunyadov delved deeper into factors driving Vietnam’s popularity among tourists. Vietnam has recently emerged as a focal point for Kazakh travelers due to its favorable price-to-quality ratio. Bunyadov highlighted the significant price reductions, particularly in luxury accommodations, making Vietnam a more affordable alternative to traditional favorites like Türkiye.

Resilience of destination tourism

Türkiye maintains its position as the top destination among Kazakh tourists, citing shared cultural and culinary similarities. Bunyadov observed a trend wherein other countries are endeavoring to replicate Türkiye’s success by offering attractive conditions and competitive pricing to attract tourists.

Bunyadov has assessed that all tourist destinations have experienced an approximate 17% increase in prices compared to the previous year. He added that this surge has been observed in Türkiye due to the evolving geopolitical situation worldwide.

Following the recent floods, Dubai has successfully recovered and resumed all flights from Kazakhstan to the UAE and vice versa. According to Brown, all hotels in Dubai are operating normally, and the flood-affected areas in tourist destinations have been effectively addressed and cleared, ensuring a seamless experience for travelers.

Highlights of travel expenditures

Based on insightful statistical findings obtained by Kazinform for 2023, most travelers from Kazakhstan are between 25 and 34 years old, with 260,804 individuals falling into this age group. The number of tourists in pre-retirement and retirement age is 111,518.

The highest outbound tourism expenditures were made by travelers from Almaty, who spent approximately 115 billion tenge ($260 million). They were followed by tourists from Astana, who collectively spent nearly 44 billion tenge ($99.6 million). The Karaganda Region registered 34.5 billion tenge ($78.1 million), and the lowest expenditures were from residents of the Ulytau Region, who spent over 765 million tenge ($1.7 million).

The main expenses for Kazakh tourists were transportation services, including the cost of tour packages, which exceeded 83.4 billion tenge ($188.8 million) nationwide. This was followed by expenses during the trip, including shopping for approximately 43 billion tenge ($97.3 million), food for 25 billion tenge ($56.6 million), and accommodation for 19 billion tenge ($43 million).

The total volume of insurance premiums for mandatory tourist insurance was 6.8 billion tenge ($15.4 million), an increase of 24.8% compared to 2022. Meanwhile, the volume of voluntary insurance premiums was 4.3 billion tenge ($9.7 million).
