Naman Shrestha of Where Is The Tourist Filmed?

Created by Jack and Harry Williams, ‘The Tourist’ is a drama thriller series that follows the life of a car crash victim after he wakes up in an Australian hospital without any memories of his past. The protagonist, who has amnesia and is referred to as “the Man,” must use all the clues that he can find in order to discover his identity before his mysterious and supposedly dangerous past catches up with him and affects his present. The mystery series features some brilliant performances from Jamie Dornan , Danielle Macdonald, Damon Herriman, and Shalom Brune-Franklin, making the series all the more interesting.

Apart from the suspenseful narrative and dramatic acting, ‘The Tourist’ also contains some vivid graphics and suitable backdrops spread throughout the narrative to provide the series with more authenticity. It is only natural for you to be curious about the sites used for the filming of the series. Well, we are here to appease your curiosity by filling you in on all the information about the filming locations!

The Tourist Filming Locations

Set in Australia, ‘The Tourist’ is filmed in South Australia so as to keep the narrative look realistic and use the diverse backdrops that the state offers. The production team uses Flinders Ranges, Adelaide, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, and Peterborough as the major filming sites to capture some stunning backdrops and landscapes for the series.

The principal photography for the first season of this drama series commenced in March 2021 and concluded in July 2021. Over the years, South Australia has hosted the production and filming of various TV shows and movies, such as ‘Escape from Pretoria’ and ‘ I Am Mother .’ Now, let’s take a detailed look at the specific locations that are used for the series, shall we?

Adelaide, South Australia

The capital of South Australia, Adelaide, is used for a majority of filming scenes as the show’s lead actor, Jamie Dornan, and the rest of the crew were spotted shooting some sequences around June 2021. The scenes that feature the Frewville Motor Inn were filmed using the backdrops of Adelaide.

Moreover, the sequences where the Man walks along the Kuta-Legian strip in Bali were actually filmed on the beach of North Haven, a northwestern suburb of the capital, made possible by the production team as they built a beach hut on the filming site. Some pivotal scenes were also filmed in the Adelaide Studios, which is located at 226 Fullarton Road in the small suburb of Glenside in Adelaide.

Flinders Ranges, South Australia

For the purpose of filming, the production team especially built a petrol station in the outback of Flinders Ranges, a locality situated in the eponymous mountain range. Originating around 200 km north of Adelaide and stretching over 430 km, the range is featured as the backdrop for various scenes of the show. The sequence wherein the protagonist is driving through the outback and stops to fuel up his vehicle at the gas station was also shot in Flinders Ranges.

Among other locations in the region, the crew also went to the small town of Quorn, located in Flinders Ranges to get in some more shots for the series.

The production team also took a trip to Hawker, which is another small locality in the Flinders Ranges area, to capture a few sequences for ‘The Tourist.’

Willochra, a rural locality in this region, is another filming location that was used as a backdrop by the cast and crew to incorporate more scenes for the show.

The crew also stopped by Kanyaka, located just north of Willochra, to capture additional scenes for the Jamie Dornan-starrer.

While in Kanyaka, there were some scenes filmed in Kanyaka Creek as well.

During their several weeks of shooting in the Flinders Ranges area, the production team also made sure to visit another small town on the eastern side of the Flinders Ranges, Johnburgh, to lense more sequences.

Finally, the filming of the show in the Flinders Ranges area was wrapped up in Willochra after 44 days of traveling to different regions in the locality for the purpose of shooting.

Port Augusta, South Australia

Some portion of the scenes for the inaugural season of ‘The Tourist’ was also filmed in the small city of Port Augusta in Australia. The production team was also seen to be putting out a casting call for extras in this region in March 2021. Located around 322 km north of the state capital, the small city is a former seaport and is inhabited by less than 14,000 people.

Peterborough, South Australia

tourist film australia

Peterborough, originally known as Petersburg, is a remote town located right off the Barrier Highway in South Australia. The location was used by the production team to film several episodes of the first season of ‘The Tourist.’ Offering a seemingly harsh landscape, it makes for an ideal destination for filming such an intense and thrilling series as ‘The Tourist.’

Murray Bridge, South Australia

Located just about 78 km east-southeast of the state capital, Murray Bridge also doubled up as one of the filming destinations for the production of the inaugural season of the action thriller series. ‘Twin Rivers’ and ‘Thunderstruck’ are a couple of movies, among so many others, that were filmed in this South Australian city.

Other Locations in South Australia

In addition to the aforementioned locations, Mannum, which is a historic town located on the west bank of the Murray River in the state of South Australia, was used for the production of quite a few scenes.

Moreover, the crew also had Orroroo on their list of filming locations for shooting certain scenes for the series. With a population of under 1000 people, it is a town located in the Yorke and Mid North region of the state.

Where was the tourist filmed jamie dornan thriller's filming locations explained.

When it comes to filming locations, Jamie Dornan's critically acclaimed thriller The Tourist excels by shooting its many twists and turns on location.

  • The Tourist season 1 was filmed in South Australia, primarily in and around Adelaide, showcasing the region's diverse landscapes.
  • Recognizable season-one filming locations include Port Augusta, Peterborough, and the Flinders Ranges, adding authenticity to the show's story.
  • For season 2, The Tourist moved filming to Dublin, Ireland, with some scenes shot in Bray and the Wicklow Mountains, continuing the tradition of capturing unique locations.

When it comes to filming locations, The Tourist 's two seasons excel at capturing the very places they're set. A critically acclaimed BBC thriller series, The Tourist stars The Fall 's Jamie Dornan as a man who wakes up in an Australian hospital after surviving a life-altering car accident in the Outback. To make matters even more difficult, Dornan's character in The Tourist has amnesia . Unable to recall what he's doing in Australia, the man uses what few clues he has to piece together his identity. It's a tall order, especially since the man doesn't even remember his own name .

After finding a note in his jeans pocket to meet someone at a café in the town of Burnt Ridge, the man realizes his life before the car accident was more than a little complicated. As Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin) puts it, Dornan's character " made some bad people angry ," which means figuring out his identity is a crucial — and time-sensitive — matter. As the man's past catches up with him, the twists and turns of The Tourist season 1 unfold for Jamie Dornan 's character, setting the stage for an equally stylish, shocking, and compelling sophomore outing.

Adelaide & Several Smaller Towns Are Featured In The Tourist Season 1

Unlike other series, The Tourist invests in its settings. For season 1, the cast and crew traveled to South Australia. The southern central part of the continent, South Australia is home to several low mountain ranges and arid rangelands. While there are some beautiful coastal spots, including South Australia's capital city, Adelaide. Notably, Jamie Dornan's character is run off the road by a trucker in a more desert-like area, but most of The Tourist season 1 was filmed in and around Adelaide . In one flashback, Adelaide's North Haven Beach even serves as a stand-in for Bali's Kuta Beach.

Other recognizable South Australia filming locations in The Tourist season 1 include the small coastal city of Port Augusta and the town of Peterborough, which is located in the state's wheat country (via Entertainment Daily ). Since Peterborough is just off the Barrier Highway, it served as an ideal location for filming the man's journey to track down a mysterious caller in the first few installments of The Tourist 's six-episode season 1. Finally, the thriller was shot on location in the Flinders Ranges , the largest mountain range in South Australia that's home to the impressive natural amphitheater of Ikara.

The Tourist season 2 comes to Netflix on February 29, 2024.

The Tourist Season 2 Moved Filming To Dublin, Ireland

Some scenes were shot outside of dublin.

The Tourist season 1 was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike. In the United Kingdom, it became the most-watched show in 2022. For season 2, The Tourist moved to a new U.S. streaming home; Max dropped The Tourist , but Netflix picked it up. The show also swapped filming locations, trading Australia for Dublin, Ireland (via Radio Times ). While most filming took place in Dublin, some scenes were filmed in the coastal town of Bray and the Wicklow Mountains. Like its first outing, The Tourist season 2 adds authenticity to its story by filming at singular locations.

Everywhere The Tourist Was Filmed

The BBC thriller beings in South Australia but ends in a very different location.

Jamie Dornan stars as The Man in BBC Thriller 'The Tourist'

Set to air on New Year’s Day, upcoming thriller The Tourist isn’t your typical BBC drama. The six-part series is “full of shocking, surprising, funny and brutal turns,” where “off-beat black comedy punctuates high-stakes action,” says the BBC. And there’s the epic cinematic shots and a budget to match. But where is The Tourist filmed?

The thriller opens with Jamie Dornan’s character driving a beat-up old car in the vast, scorching Australian backlands, when a tanker truck looms closer in the rear-view mirror. As the lorry begins to speed up to him, Dornan is pushed off the road and a chase ensues across the dusty plains, resulting in an explosive, cinematic crash. And that’s just the first five minutes.

Set against the glowing red outback, the story begins in South Australia, where the series was also filmed. With less strict lockdown restrictions, The Tourist is the latest and largest in a string of projects that Australian streaming platform Stan has filmed in the area. Steven Marshall, Premier of South Australia, said the 17-week long shoot for The Tourist was the biggest television production ever to be made in South Australia and is said to have created over 120 jobs for local cast and crew.

BBC Thriller 'The Tourist' was the biggest production South Australia has ever seen

“Securing The Tourist is a real coup for South Australia,” Premier Marshall said at the time, “not only will it create hundreds of local jobs, but it will also put South Australia’s remarkable landscape on show right around the world.”

Whilst the majority of the filming took place in regional areas of South Australia such as Port Augusta, Quorn, Peterborough, and Flinders Ranges National Park, filming also took place in the state’s capital of Adelaide.

The story of The Tourist comes from the acclaimed writers of The Missing , Baptiste and Liar Harry and Jack Williams, who own and run Emmy-winning production company Two Brothers Pictures. Set in a world populated by “quirky, enigmatic characters”, the mystery thriller follows The Man’s (Jamie Dornan) search for his true identity from the dusty outback of Australia, to the white-sand beaches of Bali via the city lights of Singapore.

The Tourist airs on BBC One at 9 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2022, and will be available to stream on iPlayer shortly after.

Jamie Dornan in The Tourist

The BBC’s six-part series The Tourist kicked off on ou r screens on New Year’s Day, starring Jamie Dornan.

The show was an instant hit, with many comparing it to a cult action classic , and viewers have been kept hooked since then – with episodes airing on Sunday nights as well as the whole series available to binge-watch on iPlayer. Fans have also been clamouring for a second season of the show.

After waking with no memory, a man known simply as ‘The Man’ (Dornan), attempts to piece together his own story across one of the most unforgiving environments anywhere on earth after finding himself without any memory of who he is, or why he was driven off the road in the heart of the Australian outback.

With stunning yet unforgiving landscapes captured for the drama, here’s a rundown of exactly where The Tourist was shot.

Stand by for a fair amount of dust.

Where was The Tourist filmed?

Picture Shows: The Man (JAMIE DORNAN) in The Tourist

As well as being set there, the show was in fact filmed on location Down Under, and the cast includes Aussie actors Danielle Macdonald (Dumplin’) and Mindhunter’s Damon Herriman, alongside Line Of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin (who grew up in Oz) among others.

The Tourist was a 17-week shoot in the region.

South Australia

Danielle Macdonald in The Tourist

Shooting primarily took place both in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, and more regional towns in the area, including Port Augusta and Peterborough.

The cast was spotted filming there in 2021, and Steven Marshall MP, Premier of South Australia, called it ‘the biggest TV production the area had ever seen’.

Speaking to the South Australian Film Corporation in December 2020 ahead of cameras rolling, he added: ‘The Tourist is a great opportunity for South Australia – the first Location Incentive production to locate to the state, bringing international attention to South Australia as a world class production destination.’

The Tourist was expected to create more than 120 local jobs and inject an estimated AUD$12.1million (£6.5m) into the area’s economy.

Flinders Ranges

Jamie Dornan as The Man in The Tourist

Flinders Ranges is the location of the petrol station in The Tourist, where Dornan’s The Man fills up his car.

The production purpose built the station for the show.

The area is home to the largest mountain range in South Australia, and boasts several locations with special protected area status, including the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park and the Mount Remarkable National Park among others.

The range starts approximately 125 miles north of Adelaide.

Jamie Dornan in The Tourist

Adelaide sits on the south coast of Australia, and Dornan and company were spotted shooting scenes in and about the city during their fourth-month shoot.

In fact, most of the filming took place in Adelaide, including scenes at the Frewville Motor Inn, a motel in the small suburb of the city.

Bali’s Kuta-Legian strip was also recreated in Adelaide’s North Haven beach.

Port Augusta

Shalom Brune-Franklin in The Tourist

A much smaller city in South Australia, some scenes for The Tourist were based here, with the production putting out a call for extras in the area and in other locations in March, with shoot dates between April 5 and May 8, and June 21 and July 30 of last year.

Port Augusta is a former seaport and home to just under 14,000 people.

Peterborough

Peterborough provided a backdrop for some of the series’ scenes, and is located just off the Barrier Highway, which cuts a swathe across New South Wales and South Australia.

The area it cuts through is mostly remote and very sparsely settled, providing a perfectly mysterious and confusing setting for a man struggling with amnesia.

The Tourist continues at 9pm on Sunday on BBC One and the whole series is also available on BBC iPlayer.

tourist film australia

HBO Max continues stealth drops of some of the best drama mini-series on television. Last year highlights included “The Head” and “ Station Eleven ,” and they start 2022 strongly with the fantastic “The Tourist,” a twisty tale that plays like an Aussie version of “ Fargo .” With sharp dialogue, clever plotting, and career-best work from Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald , this is a great little thriller, a show that constantly keeps you guessing and entertained in equal measure.

The “ Belfast ” and “ Fifty Shades of Grey ” star plays an unnamed man (at least for a while) who is driving through the very remote Australian outback. He stops at a station to use the bathroom, banters with the guy behind the counter, and hits the road again. Looking in the rearview mirror, he sees a truck gaining on him with remarkable speed. The Man twists off the road to avoid it and the trucker follows, revealing through a POV from his cab that this is very intentional—he’s trying to kill this tourist. They race through the desert until The Man’s car crashes. He wakes up in a hospital with no memory of who he is or how he got there.

Enter a small-town officer named Helen Chambers (Macdonald), engaged to an awful man named Ethan ( Greg Larsen ) and thrust into a mystery about who this handsome Irishman is in a hospital bed. When The Man finds a note with a time and a location in his pocket, he heads to a small town called Burnt Ridge, where he meets a woman named Luci ( Shalom Brune-Franklin ) who might know about his past, ends up crossing paths with a sociopath ( Ólafur Darri Ólafsson ) who clearly wants him dead, and gets a phone call from a man who’s been buried underground. And then things get even weirder.

Created by the people behind the excellent “ The Missing ” (which aired stateside on Starz), the writing on “The Tourist” is a metronomic back and forth between reveals and how those reveals propel the narrative in a new direction. Pushing their way through all the chaos are Dornan and Macdonald, both phenomenal. Dornan finds a quirky, unsettled way to play a man who doesn’t know who he is without resorting to the cliché of the lost soul. If anything, he leans into more of a blank slate interpretation of amnesia, playing a guy who’s more open to what comes next because he can’t remember what came before. And Macdonald is charming and so incredibly likable that she becomes the heart of a show that can be cold at times.

Echoes of “ Memento ” and “Fargo” aside, “The Tourist” also has its own quirky personality. Some of those quirks get a bit extreme in late-season episodes in ways I can’t spoil, but the show is never boring. It’s a reminder that the Dornan who was so great in “ The Fall ” is still out there, and I hope it leads him to more bizarre, challenging roles like this one. There’s an argument to be made that there’s an even-better 100-minute movie in this six-episode mini-series, but that’s not the world we’re in right now. A story like this has a better chance to be told in the TV system than the mid-budget film one, and the writers don’t drag their feet or spin their wheels like so many streaming thrillers. They’re constantly moving our hero forward, keeping us uncertain about his past and even his moral center.

Some will argue that “The Tourist” gets too convoluted and I’ll admit that I enjoyed the playful uncertainty of the first half of the season more than the intensity of the second half. Although the show does get deeper in how it unpacks lies we tell ourselves and those we listen to from other people. It turns out that everyone on "The Tourist" has a secret or two, and almost all of them could use a car accident to reset the hole they've dug for themselves.

I'm not sure how intentional it is but the show never stopped reminding me of some of my favorite early Coen films—the noir danger of “ Blood Simple ,” the open roads of “ Raising Arizona ” (and a bearded hunter who seems unkillable), Macdonald’s very Marge Gunderson character—and yet these nods to greats are embedded in a breakneck plot that never slows down enough to distract from its own inspired storytelling. Take the trip.

Wait, Where Are We? Here's Where HBO Max's Amnesia Drama Miniseries 'The Tourist' Was Filmed

Bianca Piazza - Author

Mar. 3 2022, Published 10:13 p.m. ET

Where are we? How did we get here? It's suddenly all so fuzzy. Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan plays a tourist suffering from amnesia in the Australian Outback in Jack and Harry Williams' HBO Max drama series The Tourist . While driving on a dry, dusty Australian highway, singing along to the radio without a care in the world, Jamie's protagonist — who's simply credited as "The Man" — is suddenly hit by a truck. It doesn't seem to be an accident, however, as the truck was aiming for him.

Awaking from the crash, The Man can't seem to remember a thing about his life, not even his own identity. With just a few clues, The Man must put the puzzle pieces of his life together, because there are ruthless people from his past hot on his trail.

First airing on BBC One in January 2022, the Williams brothers relayed that "emotion, jeopardy, tension, and narrative surprise" fill their limited series. It boasts one of those storylines where the audience knows just as much as the protagonist does, which always makes for a suspenseful ride.

And while The Man doesn't initially know where he is subsequent to the crash, we're sure the monster-sized spiders, muscle-laced kangaroos, and flying boomerangs gave it away. All jokes aside, it certainly looks like The Man is lost in the Land Down Under; but was the show actually filmed on the continent?

Where was HBO Max's 'The Tourist' filmed?

Yes, The Tourist was, in fact, filmed in Australia. More specifically, it was shot in South Australia, mainly in the capital city of Adelaide, and in nearby towns like Port Augusta and Peterborough, as reported by Radio Times . Australian mountain range Flinders Ranges also appears in The Tourist .

And while Australia is adorned with natural beauty, nature isn't always merciful. "[Flies] were crawling in my eyes. I tried to leave them alone and then our cinematographer, who is incredible, was like, 'I wanted to throw up as it was digging in your eye'," Danielle Macdonald told Express .

The flies weren't just a nuisance, though, they were an expensive nuisance. "We've literally had to pay so much money to remove flies from shots," said director Chris Sweeney. "Because it's so remote and hot, there's no water anywhere else, the only water was in your eyes." UGH, absolutely not.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by HBO Max (@hbomax)

"We wanted it to be the middle of nowhere for obvious reasons, but what's interesting is that we discovered there are no things like a service station in the middle of the Outback because everything is clustered in towns — otherwise you'd get like one customer a month," Chris Sweeney explained.

"We went to Australia looking for service stations in the middle of nowhere, and [the locals] were like, 'Sorry, we don't have those here.'"

Hilariously, this became such an issue that the gas station featured in the premiere episode had to be built for The Tourist ! There just aren't gas stations plopped in the middle of the blazing Outback.

All six episodes of The Tourist are currently streaming on HBO Max.

The Tourist, The Gilded Age and Strictly Ballroom: what’s new to streaming in Australia in January

Plus an outback thriller starring Zac Efron, a George Clooney-directed coming-of-age drama and a documentary about Shane Warne

Netflix Mother/Android

Film, US, 2022 – out 7 January

Ah yes: the old “rise of Skynet” chestnut, whereby all androids in a dystopian future declare themselves sick of doing our dirty work and rebel against the lousy humans who enslaved them. Director Mattson Tomlin dusts off an old genre that has had some memorable recalibrations recently, such as Ex Machina, I Am Mother , Blade Runner 2049 and the Westworld reboot.

Chloë Grace Moretz plays Georgia, who discovers she is pregnant on Christmas Eve. Soon androids (which in this future are modelled to look like humans) start raising hell, prompting her to embark on a perilous journey to a safe place in Boston where she can give birth. Action and carnage ensue. When the droids go crae-crae, one assumes humans no longer have an ability to send a Windows error report. The horror!

TV, US, 2022 – out 14 January

Here comes another new take on a creaky old genre: the found footage production. Loosely based on the popular podcast of the same name, with Australian horror bigwig James Wan on board as producer, Archive 81 follows an archivist (Mamoudou Athie) who, while repairing damaged VHS tapes, pieces together the story of a documentary film-maker (Dina Shihabi) who investigated a dangerous cult.

It’s probably best not to expect a masterpiece, as the found footage genre is only occasionally interesting: for every Cannibal Holocaust, The Blair Witch Project or Chronicle, there are a zillion forgettable low-rent productions. But hey, stranger things have happened, as has Netflix’s smash-hit show Stranger Things – one of its directors, Rebecca Thomas, helming four episodes of Archive 81.

Honourable mentions: Spider-Man: Far from Home (film, 4 January), The House (TV, 14 January), Ozark season four (TV, 21 January), Munich: The Edge of War (film, 21 January), Snowpiercer season three (TV, 25 January).

The Tourist

TV, UK/Australia, 2022 – out 2 January

Pulse-pounding action, cliffhanger-filled plotlines and a core mystery involving a character stranded in the outback who cannot remember his own name let alone what he is doing here – now this is a great way to kick off your television watching in 2022 . Irish actor Jamie Dornan (AKA Christian Grey from the Fifty Shades franchise) gets plonked in the middle of heat-frazzled Woop Woop, playing “The Man” – an antihero who suffers severe amnesia after being rammed off the road by a psychopathic truck driver.

Why are the locals so … mean? And what did he do to deserve such rudeness? All will eventually be revealed after many a twist and turn. Directors Chris Sweeney and Daniel Nettheim establish a foot-to-the-pedal pace that doesn’t let up across the show’s six-episode arc.

Film, Australia, 2022 – out 26 January

Jamie Dornan isn’t the only famous, hunky foreigner to be plonked in the arid outback – there’s also heartthrob Zac Efron. Directed by actor Anthony Hayes, who made the very good 2008 Adelaide-set drama Ten Empty, Gold is a survival thriller about a man (Efron) who discovers a big chunk of the good stuff and, of course, executes a plan to keep it.

Any outdoors-set film about greedy hard-bitten men pursuing wealth at the potential expense of life, limb and sanity is inevitably compared with The Treasure of the Sierra Madre – which is a little unfair given John Huston’s 1948 film is a rolled-gold (so to speak) masterpiece. We’ll see how Gold stands up, but one thing we know for sure: it will never get old to see good-looking foreign actors left to fry in the Australian sun.

Honourable mentions: Upgrade (film, 2 January), The Raid 1 and 2 (film, 4 January), Enemy (film, 7 January), That Damn Michael Che (TV, 12 January), Wolf Like Me (TV, 13 January), The Iron Giant (film, 15 January), Unforgiven (film, 15 January), Melancholia (film, 20 January), Mandy (film, 21 January), He Died with a Felafel in his Hand (film, 25 January), Jasper Jones (film, 27 January), Lantana (film, 27 January).

The tender bar.

Film, US, 2021 – out 7 January

Ben Affleck in The Tender Bar.

The latest George Clooney-directed film is a 70s-set coming-of-age drama presented in a postcard-looking retro aesthetic. Adapting JR Moehringer’s 2005 memoir, Daniel Ranieri plays JR as a child, with Ben Affleck as his Uncle Charlie and Christopher Lloyd as his cranky grandfather. Lloyd has been doing the angry old man shtick for what feels like an eternity; he even seemed old and nutty in the Back to the Future movies despite the actor then being only in his late 40s and early 50s.

TV, Australia, 2022 – out 25 January

Any documentary about Shane Warne has a lot of important ground to cover, including the cricketer’s appearance in Advanced Hair advertisements , his fondness for durries and his extraterrestrial-themed reinterpretation of the theory of evolution .

Oh, there’s also Warne’s huge influence on cricket and his presence in Australian media as one of our most influential sport celebrities. Amazon Prime Video’s documentary claims it presents an “extraordinary untold story” that offers new ways “to understand the man behind the legend”.

Honourable mentions: F9: The Fast Saga (film, 1 January), Red Dog: True Blue (film, 5 January), Happy Feet (film, 6 January), Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania (film, 14 January), The Lobster (film, 15 January), The Hitman’s Bodyguard (film, 19 January), As We See It (TV, 21 January), Inglourious Basterds (film, 26 January).

Binge Peacemaker

TV, US, 2022 – out 13 January

The opening credits sequence of James Gunn’s new superhero series shows the titular hero and others dancing on a soundstage lit up with pink and blue lights. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting scene to summarise Gunn’s approach to caped crusader stories – his party-loving vibes making them feel like fun soirees (see also: Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad and the underrated Super ).

Peacemaker continues where The Suicide Squad finished, even beginning with a “previously on The Suicide Squad” recap. This will limit the show’s broader appeal while satisfying fans of that film in particular. The series fleshes out the hero’s backstory and subsequent adventures, which involve him arguing with random people, evading assassination attempts and hanging out with his pet eagle.

The Cleaning Lady

TV, US, 2022 – out 5 January

An early scene in The Cleaning Lady reveals that protagonist Thony De La Rosa (Élodie Yung), who is working as a cleaner in Las Vegas, is actually a brilliant, quick-thinking doctor. Coming to America from the Philippines, seeking a bone marrow donor for her very sick young son, Thony struggles to make ends meet, fighting for the future for herself and her family. This is difficult enough before she finds herself caught up in organised crime.

This show features a very strong performance from Yung, whose presence has a solidifying effect, binding the drama together.

Honourable mentions: Mad Max: The Road Warrior (film, 1 January), Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (film, 1 January), Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts (TV, 1 January), The Constant Gardener (film, 3 January), Searching for Bobby Fischer (film, 5 January), Lost in Translation (film, 7 January), Pulp Fiction (film, 7 January), Saturday Night Fever (film, 8 January), Euphoria season two (TV, 10 January), Last Cab to Darwin (film, 15 January), Flashdance (film, 15 January), The Dark Tower (film, 29 January), American Beauty (film, 30 January).

SBS on Demand Araatika: Rise Up!

Film, Australia, 2021 – out 26 January

Larissa Behrendt has carved out a niche as an interesting cine-essayist making documentaries that explore subjects highly significant to Indigenous Australian culture – most recently After the Apology , about the continued removal of Indigenous children from their homes, and now Araatika: Rise Up! , which follows a group of NRL players as they create the First Nations equivalent of a haka.

The doco gets a tournament movie-esque trajectory when Wesley Enoch, artistic director of Sydney festival, invites Dean Widders and others to perform their soon-to-be-invented dance on a world stage, leaving no doubt as to what the final moments of Araatika will be. It is a film that’s softly uplifting and told with a warming sense of optimism.

Delicatessen

Film, France, 1991 – out 1 January

French directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro (AKA Jeunet and Caro) made some amazing films – among them 1995’s The City of Lost Children and also the spectacularly weird and gnarly Delicatessen, a black comedy revolving around a butcher who murders humans then sells them as cheap meat. Grim subject, maybe, but it’s a visual delight from start to finish; if you don’t believe me, check out its innovative opening credits .

Honourable mentions: The Apartment (film, 1 January), Angel Heart (film, 1 January), Mud (film, 3 January), Sextortion (TV, 6 January), Crisis (TV, 13 January), Nasdrovia (TV, 13 January) The Place Beyond the Pines (film, 22 January), Sorry for Your Loss seasons 1 and 2 (TV, 27 January).

ABC iView’s summer binge

ABC iView has launched its “Summer Binge” program, with key strands including family , drama and comedy . Movie-wise there’s a wealth of Australian films in particular – highlights include The Mule , Lore and Strictly Ballroom. Plus there’s loads of international titles such as Buried (starring Ryan Reynolds as a man who’s buried alive), Train to Busan (a ferociously good South Korean horror film) and The Florida Project (a moving drama set in and around a crummy hotel not far from Disney World).

The Big Short

Film, US, 2015 – out 7 January

Adam McKay’s latest satire, Don’t Look Up , has divided audiences and critics, some seeing it as an unmitigated disaster while others appreciate it as a thinly veiled commentary on the climate crisis. His GFC-themed comedy The Big Short was, for what it’s worth, more lauded and less divisive, celebrated as a fine example of making an accessible film out of dry and potentially uninteresting subject matter.

A huge cast – including Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Melissa Leo, Marisa Tomei, Margot Robbie and Christian Bale – help the medicine go down. Steve Carell delivers one of several memorable analogies when he describes mortgage bonds as “dog shit wrapped in cat shit”.

Fantastic Mr Fox

Film, US, 2009 – out 7 January

Like Adam McKay, Wes Anderson is a big-name director with a new film that has recently hit screens: the charming but slight The French Dispatch . The highly distinctive auteur’s style is even more fastidious in animation than live action, evidenced in his irresistible stop-motion adaptation of Roald Dahl’s famous children’s novel. Fantastic Mr Fox follows the suave titular character (voiced by George Clooney) as he steals produce from his human farmers then deals with the fallout.

Honourable mentions: The Simpsons season 32 (TV, 5 January), The Eternals (film, 12 January), The Hate U Give (film, 21 January) Marvel’s Hit-Monkey (TV, 26 January).

The Gilded Age

TV, US, 2022 – out 26 January

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has moved from early 20th century Yorkshire to late 19th century New York for his new series The Gilded Age. Many essential elements remain the same: namely a focus on extreme wealth (the show being set in NYC high society) and loads of lovely and lavish costumes.

Marian Brook (newcomer Louisa Jacobson, who is Meryl Streep’s daughter) moves to the New York home of her aunts and gets caught up in a war between her family and some very loaded neighbours. Yes: there will be top hats and corsets.

Honourable mentions: Five Bedrooms season three (TV, 1 January) Gossip (TV, 5 January), The Panthers (TV, 13 January), A Quiet Place II (film, 14 January).

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Tourist’ On Netflix, Where Jamie Dornan Plays A Man Without His Memory Trying To Outrun His Past

Where to stream:.

  • The Tourist

Netflix Basic

What would you do if you lost your memory? Not just what you had for breakfast, but all sense of who you are and who is in your life? Then you find out that someone really, really wants to see you dead? That’s the idea behind the new Netflix series, which originally ran on HBO Max back in 2022.

THE TOURIST : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: Scenes of the arid environment in the Australian Outback. A tiny car drives down an empty road.

The Gist: A man (Jamie Dornan) stops for gas; he’s wearing a generic “AUSTRALIA” tourist t-shirt. He has no idea why the attendant at the station makes him sign out for the bathroom key. We see him come out the back door of the bathroom, next to the Dumpsters.

As he’s driving on the seemingly empty road in his tiny Mazda, a massive tractor trailer bears down on him. When the tractor trailer rams the man’s car, he realizes it’s not just an aggressive driver. After a long chase over some rough terrain, the man thinks he’s gotten away from the truck, when the truck slams into him, causing the tiny car to roll over a few times.

The man wakes up in the local hospital, surprisingly not severely injured. However, he has no idea who he is or what he was doing. He doesn’t even remember his own name. He can recall a song title when he’s in an MRI machine, but that’s about it.

A friendly local cop, Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald), goes to his room to take a statement. She is a bit uncomfortable with the man’s lack of memory, but ends up being reassuring to an extent. The only thing he finds in his possessions is a note to meet someone the next day at a diner in a nearby town. Helen says she’ll look into that.

We follow Helen home and see that, like most of us, she has issues with her weight, not the least of which is exacerbated by her fiancé Ethan (Greg Larsen) and their upcoming wedding.

Another thing we see is someone buried underground. Desperate to get out of whatever box he’s been put in, he tries to call someone on his phone, but no one is answering.

The man goes outside to get air, but gets lost inside the hospital, scaring him senseless. He decides to check himself out of the hospital the next day, against medical advice, because he needs to go to that diner and find out just who wanted to meet him there. Helen understands why he wants to do it, and gives him a bus ticket to get there.

At the diner, he meets a waitress named Luci (Shalom Brune-Franklin), who seems to be fascinated by his amnesia. When she spills lemonade on him, she takes him out to where there are bathrooms. Just then, there’s an explosion, right in the booth where he was sitting. He wonders aloud why in the world someone is trying to kill him.

Pictures from a disposable camera found at the crash site help him retrace his steps, as well as video from the gift shop he visited. It brings him back to the gas station and its bathroom. He doesn’t find out his name though, as he signed the key sign-out sheet as “Crocodile Dundee.” But he finds something else; a stuffed koala that he hid next to the Dumpster. Much to his surprise, it starts ringing.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Take the movie  Memento and cross it with the quirkiness of the first season of the  Fargo series, and you’ve got the vibe of  The Tourist.

Our Take: The Tourist , written by Harry Williams and Jack Williams ( The Missing, Fleabag ) looks like it’s a complex show with a twisty plot, but when you really take a close look, it’s pretty straightforward. Dornan’s character has no idea who he is; all he knows is that someone wants to kill him. With the help of Helen and others, he’ll try to piece things together before those that are after him, including Billy (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), the whistling man who almost squashed him in the tractor trailer, catch up to him.

In the first episode,  The Tourist  evolves from what seems like a thriller to a more personal narrative. It’s why we get involved in Helen’s life when she’s off-duty. In a Weight Watchers-style meeting, she claims she doesn’t like her body, even though everyone is yelling about body acceptance. But it also feels like she’s more there because of her fiancé than anything else. So even though Helen knows her name, who’s in her life and what she does, she also hasn’t found herself. Plus, she seems to be made to feel guilty about just about everything.

Perhaps as she gets more involved in the life of Dornan’s character, the more she will figure out who she is. At least that’s what we hope, because Macdonald is utterly charming as Helen, who is very much in the vein of Allison Tolman’s portrayal of Molly Solverson in the aforementioned  Fargo. She’s good at her job, even if she’s a bit green, but also is a friendly and helpful sort who needs to help herself most of all.

There is definitely a bit of a sense of humor running the first episode, but the Williamses aren’t trying to make the show quippy. The humor is there when people seem to be fascinated with Dornan’s character’s amnesia, though he assures them it’s no picnic. The humor creeps in along the edges of the show, but it does just enough to ease what is a pretty serious and grim performance by Dornan.

There is one twist near the end of the episode that we won’t spoil here, but it does make us wonder if, as things get more complicated for Dornan’s character (notice we haven’t named him yet, because the character has none as yet), the plot will become more convoluted. We hope not, as it seems the straightforward manner in which this story is being told suits  The Tourist just fine.

Sex and Skin: Nothing in the first episode.

Parting Shot: When the stuffed koala starts ringing, the man digs out a burner phone and answers it. When the man who’s buried starts yelling in relief that he answered, the man says, “Uh, who’s this?”

Sleeper Star: Shalom Brune-Franklin does some compelling work as Luci, and we know that she’s much more involved in this story than most of the first episode lets on.

Most Pilot-y Line: Nothing we could find.

Our Call:  STREAM IT.  The Tourist  hooked us in with its story, plus the performances by Dornan, Macdonald and Brune-Franklin. Let’s hope the story continues to be interesting as the season goes on.

A knife attack in Australia is being treated as terrorism

SYDNEY — Australian police say a knife attack in Sydney that wounded a bishop and a priest during a church service as horrified worshippers watched online and in person, and sparked a riot was an act of terrorism. Police arrested a 16-year-old boy Tuesday after the stabbing at Christ the Good Shepherd Church that injured Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and a priest. Both are expected to survive. New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the suspect's comments pointed to a religious motive for the attack. "We'll allege there's a degree of premeditation on the basis that this person has travelled to that location, which is not near his residential address, he has travelled with a knife and subsequently the bishop and the priest have been stabbed," Webb said. "They're lucky to be alive." The teenager was known to police but was not on a terror watch list, Webb said. The Australian Security Intelligence Organization, the nation's main domestic spy agency, and Australian Federal Police had joined state police in a counter-terrorism task force to investgate who else was potentially involved. ASIO director-general Mike Burgess said the investigation had yet to uncover any associated threats. "It does appear to be religiously motivated, but we continue our lines of investigation," Burgess said.

"Our job is to look at individuals connected with the attacker to assure ourselves that there is no-one else in the community with similar intent. At this stage, we have no indications of that," Burgess added. On ASIO's advice, the risk of a terrorist attack in Australia is rated at "possible." That is the second lowest level after "not expected" on the five-tier National Terrorism Threat Advisory System. The boy had been convicted in January of a range of offenses including possession of a switch blade knife, being armed with a weapon with an intention to commit an indictable offence, stalking, intimidation and damaging property, Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported. A Sydney court released him on a good behavior bond, the ABC reported. The boy had also used a switch blade, which is an illegal weapon in Australia, in Monday's attack, the ABC reported. Juvenile offenders cannot be publicly identified in New South Wales state. In response to the attack, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said "there is no place for violence in our community. There's no place for violent extremism." The Christ the Good Shepherd in suburban Wakeley streams sermons online and worshippers watched as a person in black clothes approached the altar and stabbed the bishop and priest Isaac Royel during a church service Monday evening before the congregation overpowered him, police said. A crowd of hundreds seeking revenge gathered outside the Orthodox Assyrian church, hurling bricks and bottles, injuring police officers and preventing police from taking the teen outside, officials said.

tourist film australia

The teen suspect and at least two police officers were also hospitalized, Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Andrew Holland told journalists. Paramedics treated 30 patients, with seven taken to hospitals, NSW Ambulance commissioner Dominic Morgan said. "This was a rapidly evolving situation where the crowds went from 50 to a number of hundreds of people in a very rapid period of time," Morgan said. "Our paramedics became directly under threat ... and had to retreat into the church," Morgan added. The church in a message on social media said the bishop and priest were in stable condition and asked for people's prayers. "It is the bishop's and father's wishes that you also pray for the perpetrator," the statement said. Holland commended the congregation for subduing the teen before calling police. When asked if the teen's fingers had been severed, he said the hand injuries were "severe." More than 100 police reinforcements arrived before the teen was taken from the church in the hours-long incident. Several police vehicles were damaged, Holland said. "A number of houses have been damaged. They've broken into a number of houses to gain weapons to throw at the police. They've thrown weapons and items at the church itself. There were obviously people who wanted to get access to the young person who caused the injuries to the clergy people," he said. Australians were still in shock after a lone assailant stabbed six people to death in a Sydney shopping mall on Saturday and injured more than a dozen others. Holland suggested the weekend attack heightened the community's response to the church stabbing. "Given that there has been incidents in Sydney the last few days with knives involved, obviously there's concerns," he said. "We've asked for everyone to think rationally at this stage. " The church said in a statement on Tuesday the 53-year-old Iraq-born bishop's condition was "improving." Emmanuel has a strong social media following and is outspoken on a range of issues. He proselytizes to both Jews and Muslims and is critical of liberal Christian denominations. He also speaks out on global political issues and laments the plight of Palestinians in Gaza. The bishop, described in local media as a figure sometimes seen as divisive on issues such as COVID-19 restrictions, was in national news last year with comments about gender. A video posted in May 2023 by the ABC about a campaign targeting the LGBTQ+ community showed the bishop in a sermon saying that "when a man calls himself a woman, he is neither a man nor a woman, you are not a human, then you are an it. Now, since you are an it, I will not address you as a human anymore because it is not my choosing, it your choosing."

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”
