The 2020 Mitsubishi RVR’s practicality, value and warranty make it a solid entry in the compact SUV market

It may not be the first vehicle that comes to mind if you’re shopping for a compact SUV, but the Mitsubishi RVR deserves a second look, especially if you’re a senior who wants to switch from a sedan to an SUV and doesn’t want to break the bank.

That’s what I discovered during my week with the RVR in Niagara, Ont., chauffeuring my 90-year-old mom to medical appointments – an eye injection in Fort Erie, a cardiologist in Niagara Falls and even an emergency visit to a hospital – something that’s unfortunately becoming more common with each passing day.

The RVR is the best-selling Mitsubishi in Canada. Petrina Gentile

Truth be told, the RVR was off my radar. The last time I drove one was in the fall of 2010 for the Canadian media launch of the 2011 RVR in Halifax. Nowadays, it’s the best-selling Mitsubishi nameplate in Canada, selling nearly 59,000 since its launch. And globally, the RVR is the third best-selling Mitsubishi nameplate, moving 1.32 million units in 90 countries.

One of the best features of the RVR – short for Recreational Vehicle Runner – is the accessibility of the front seats. The elderly will love it because the ingress, when you enter the vehicle, and egress, when exiting it, is nicely aligned with your hips, so it’s easy to slide in and out without any discomfort – unlike a sedan with a lower seat position or a taller SUV. The RVR’s front-seat adjustments are simplistic and manually operated. Sure, it’s a bit old-school, but the manual adjustments are easy to use, and it’s simple to find a comfortable seating position. The front passenger seat moves four ways, while the driver’s seat adjusts six ways. You can add a six-way power driver’s seat, but that requires moving up the ladder for the most expensive trim. The front seats are spacious and supportive, even on long drives – Mom never complained once about them.

Getting into the back seat is trickier because it’s easy to bang your head on the door frame; you have to remember to duck your head each time. Once you’re inside, however, there’s ample headroom throughout. But while there’s technically space in the back for three passengers, two adults would be more comfortable or, better yet, two grandkids, two car seats or pets. My 11-month-old foster puppy, Moon, found it comfy, harnessed in the back. If you need to lug around pet crates, groceries or strollers for the grandkids, there’s ample room in the cargo area, too – 614 litres, to be exact.

The cargo space offers ample volume for any day-to-day tasks. Petrina Gentile

Inside, the cabin is smart, clean and uncluttered, and best of all, from the driver’s seat, everything is positioned within arm’s reach. There’s a new eight-inch touch screen in the centre console that’s easy to read and use. But even better, there are conventional buttons and large dials for the volume and HVAC system, so you’re not dealing with an overwhelming amount of technology and scrolling through multiple screens to perform the simplest tasks. It’s easy to find functions quickly, even in the dark.

Traditional knobs make controlling the HVAC system a breeze. Petrina Gentile

All-around visibility from the driver’s seat is good, aided by thin pillars at the front and a rear quarter window. The RVR’s tight, compact size makes it a cinch to park in crowded lots or underground spots, as well. Several safety features are available, such as blind-spot monitoring; lane-departure warning and rear cross-traffic alert. None of these are standard, though – you have to move to a mid- or higher-level trim.

But all models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a driver’s knee airbag, cruise control, power windows and power door locks with remote keyless entry, a rear-view camera, heated front seats and heated power side-view mirrors. The base ES front-wheel-drive model costs $24,648 ($22,998 + $1,650 destination/handling fees). That might be slightly more than some competitors. A Nissan Qashqai, for example, starts at $23,048 ($21,098 + $1,950 freight/PDI). But at this time of year, you can usually find good incentives and discounts to lower the price.

And then there’s the warranty. Mitsubishi offers the best one in the business; a 10-year or 160,000-km limited powertrain warranty, plus a five-year or 100,000-km limited new vehicle warranty. Plus, there’s five years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. No other car company offers all that.

After a week running errands with my mom, the RVR is no longer off my radar. The warranty, value and price make it a serious competitor in the segment. And for seniors – either drivers or passengers – it’s an ideal ride for ferrying grandkids or pets around town.

The Mitsubishi RVR and Subaru Crossstrek are close matches on paper, but in the real world, the Crosstrek is the superior choice

Clayton Seams: Sometimes, testing vehicles can be like comparing apples to oranges, but the 2020 Mitsubishi RVR and Subaru Crosstrek are two apples! Based on the spec sheets, they’re an extremely close match; both of these compact CUVs are competing in one of Canada’s hottest segments and they could hardly be closer in terms of price. As tested, these cars are just $103 apart, and they’re only 100 millimetres apart in overall length. Both have CVTs (although a six-speed manual is available in the Subaru), both have eight-inch touchscreen infotainment systems, both have premium audio systems, and both are specced here in the highest available trims — the Crosstrek is a Limited with Subaru’s EyeSight suite of active safety bits, and the RVR is the GT AWC model (AWC is just Mitsubishi-speak for all-wheel-drive). But if we dig a little deeper, maybe they aren’t so similar after all.

Jil McIntosh: Yes, and it’s more than just one’s red and the other is orange, so I guess it’s a bit of apples to oranges after all. One’s more powerful than the other, and while they’re both all-wheel drive, their systems are different — and we’ll get into that in a bit. But for many buyers in this segment, it’s about what you get for the money, especially if you’re into the top trims as we are. The Mitsubishi has power-folding mirrors that the Subaru doesn’t, and it has a panoramic sunroof while the Subaru has a single panel. But the Crosstrek has dual-zone automatic climate control compared to the RVR’s single zone, it has adaptive cruise control and GPS navigation (both of which the RVR lacks), and it has a larger cargo compartment. Those are big-ticket items and they’re on the vehicle that’s $103 cheaper.

CS: Adding to the pile of advantages for the Mitsu, it has a larger 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine versus the Subaru’s 2.0L unit, and the larger engine generates more power and torque — 168 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque for the RVR, compared to 152 hp and 145 lb.-ft. for the Crosstrek. It’s enough to make the Mitsubishi feel slightly faster when you put your foot down, but not enough to really make a difference. While there’s enough passing power in both, neither are road burners.

The other thing you’ll notice on the highway is how much quieter the Subaru’s cabin is. The din of expansion joints and tire roar just don’t seem to penetrate the Crosstrek’s cockpit as deeply as they do in the RVR.

2020 Mitsubishi RVR

MSRP  $22,998 to $33,998

JM: You’re absolutely right on that. The Subaru feels tight and the cabin seems well-insulated, while the RVR is a bit tinny inside. I also think the Subaru’s interior looks closer to the price; I like how the dash is broken up with metallic trim pieces and orange stitching that’s also on the seats, and even the centre screen has more colour and interest. The RVR is a sea of black plastic, and while that’s to be expected on a base trim, I’d like to see a little more interesting stuff to break up the monotony on this top-level GT.

As you mentioned, the RVR feels a bit faster. But the Crosstrek is tuned so you get the most giddy-up when you initially hit the throttle. I’m really good at moderating the pedal for a smooth take-off, and even I got that whip-snap off the line most of the time, and it gets tiresome. But both of them handle about the same — I thought the RVR had just a bit sharper of a turning circle — and then there’s the all-wheel systems on both.

The Subaru drives all its wheels all the time, with a bit more power going to the front. The Mitsubishi runs in front-wheel-drive mode until you activate the AWD system, and even then, it only drives the rear wheels when needed. But even so, I took it through some deep snow and it got me through just fine.

CS: Another thing I noticed inside the two cars is the difference in the quality of the infotainment systems. While both use eight-inch displays, the Mitsubishi’s system looks badly dated compared to the Subaru. It’s the kind of system we were seeing in cars some two or three generations ago. The saving grace of the RVR’s infotainment is that it has Apple CarPlay , which connects without fuss. This is also helpful because even at $33,998 you don’t get satellite navigation! It’s a real miss at this price point. The Subaru has navigation and Apple CarPlay; I also liked the dual-screen display on the dash, and when using turn-by-turn navigation, the directions would show up in the gauge cluster for easier viewing.

Both of these cars have upgraded premium audio systems, the Mitsubishi using a Rockford Fosgate system and the Subaru a Harman Kardon. Sound clarity was better in the Subaru but the bass kicked harder in the Mitsubishi. A large reason for this was the RVR’s trunk-mounted subwoofer, which helps fill out the low tones.

JM: Yes, the RVR did a much better job of blasting out my beloved opera, but that subwoofer also chewed up some of the cargo compartment — you can carry a tune with it, but not as much stuff. The Mitsubishi has a very long warranty in its favour, up to five years bumper-to-bumper and up to 10 years for powertrain, and both of us thought it was a decent driver. But we had to pick one, and between having more features, a quieter cabin, and more cargo space, we gave this one to the Crosstrek. We just can’t argue with getting more for less.

CS : I agree; we’ve found our winner. In the end, the Subaru had the nicer interior, the superior infotainment, the quieter ride, and better fuel economy, to boot — you pay the penalty for the RVRs larger engine at the pump. The two cars were close on the spec sheet, but dollar-for-dollar in the real world, you’re getting more with the Subaru.

Her early jobs including driving a taxi in Toronto; and warranty administration in a new-vehicle dealership, where she also held information classes for customers, explaining the inner mechanical workings of vehicles and their features.

Jil McIntosh is a freelance writer who has been writing for Driving.ca since 2016, but she’s been a professional writer starting when most cars still had carburetors. At the age of eleven, she had a story published in the defunct Toronto Telegram newspaper, for which she was paid $25; given the short length of the story and the dollar’s buying power at the time, that might have been the relatively best-paid piece she’s ever written.

An old-car enthusiast who owns a 1947 Cadillac and 1949 Studebaker truck, she began her writing career crafting stories for antique-car and hot-rod car club magazines. When the Ontario-based newspaper Old Autos started up in 1987, dedicated to the antique-car hobby, she became a columnist starting with its second issue; the newspaper is still around and she still writes for it. Not long after the Toronto Star launched its Wheels section in 1986 – the first Canadian newspaper to include an auto section – she became one of its regular writers. She started out writing feature stories, and then added “new-vehicle reviewer” to her resume in 1999. She stayed with Wheels, in print and later digital as well, until the publication made a cost-cutting decision to shed its freelance writers. She joined Driving.ca the very next day.

In addition to Driving.ca, she writes for industry-focused publications, including Automotive News Canada and Autosphere. Over the years, her automotive work also appeared in such publications as Cars & Parts, Street Rodder, Canadian Hot Rods, AutoTrader, Sharp, Taxi News, Maclean’s, The Chicago Tribune, Forbes Wheels, Canadian Driver, Sympatico Autos, and Reader’s Digest. Her non-automotive work, covering such topics as travel, food and drink, rural living, fountain pen collecting, and celebrity interviews, has appeared in publications including Harrowsmith, Where New Orleans, Pen World, The Book for Men, Rural Delivery, and Gambit.

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-19 07:35

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.
