Movenpick Royal Lily Nile Cruise

My wife and I have recently returned from our long awaited trip to Egypt. We had booked a short Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor on the MS Movenpick Royal Lily, to celebrate our wedding anniversary. While we didn't know what to expect, upon boarding we were pleasantly surprised. After boarding and settling into our cabin, we were welcomed to the bar were we enjoyed a delicious assortment of Egyptian fruits etc and both alcoholic and non alcoholic cocktails were served, Pryor to enjoying a delicious dinner. The staff and crew were very helpful and friendly, our room was light and roomy and always clean, with a huge window for us to watch the scenery as it drifted slowly by. The food was delicious and plentiful and the drinks were icy cold, my wife found the dessert bar to her liking. The large covered sun deck was very comfortable and the pool was refreshing after our time on shore exploring. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to cruise the Nile. We will return definitely.

Unlike Cairo the Nile river in Aswan is beautiful and cherished. The banks are lush and full of life. So beautiful.

Booked a 7 night Nile cruise followed by 3 nights in Cairo through discover Egypt. Cairo very good but cannot emphasise how good the cruise was. As a solo traveller, it's always nice to be put into the company of others, and they did just this. There were only 4 of us - Egypt is crying out for tourism - so would definitely recommend the cruise at least! Staff on the beautiful MS Mayfair were consistently polite and hard working to ensure our comfort. We were waited upon three times a day with consistent service and consistently excellent and varied meal choices, whereas our Egyptologist guide (Islam) was always on hand if we needed anything or had any problems. Excursions - both included and optional - were always top quality. Fascinating places, wonderful people, and most importantly to understand - completely safe! October was a great time to go as it was not overly hot but still in the 30s, and the itinerary was well worked out so that there was plenty of time to relax on the sun deck as well as explore the ancient places. Undoubtedly one of the best holidays I've had - please go and find out for yourself! Booking through discover Egypt seems like a sensible option too. You are met on arrival at any airports you fly to in Egypt (I was met again in Cairo the following week too) and they help you check in for your flights home. Any optional excursions in Cairo were hotel pick-up so extremely convenient, and the price is really unbeatable considering everything included. Just wonderful!

Wonderful views and terrific people. We were on the Nile Legacy last year, and it was an amazing experience. Our Egyptologists Mohammed and Hani were wonderful! I intend to return this year as it is a great trip.

Just returned from a week cruising the Nile on board MS Emilio. Had a fantastic time and the staff were friendly and helpful. The cabin was well furnished and the ability to watch the beautiful Nile coast from the comfort of your bed was amazing. Took hundreds of photos and saw some lovely wildlife and sunsets. The boat was full around 200 guests i believe. Only 25 Brits aboard and a large number of Germans. The Brits were seated at 3 tables for meals and we kept the same seats. This gave us the chance to get to know people and we made some lovely friends. The food was plentiful and tasty with most days choice of beef, chicken and fish dishes. It did get a bit repetitive after 3 or 4 days. Our tour guide for the optional tour program we booked was Said and he was very knowledgeable and spoke good English. He didn't like to be interrupted by questions though! The trips to the temples were amazing and should not be missed although we had to get up very early most days between 3am and 6am! This was mostly to get there early and avoid the blistering hot sun. We coped with this by relaxing most of the afternoon in our room or on the sun deck by the plunge pool. On day 1 We were asked to pay a tip of £27 per person that would be split among all staff and this was an issue for some guests. We paid it straight away and in addition tipped our table waiter, the boys that cleaned our room twice daily and Said the tour guide. We didn't have a problem with this but some people felt they had been misled and this was an additional fee that they found hard to find. We could not believe the value for money this trip gave us and would highly recommenced it. Extra trips we booked were Nubian village which we enjoyed the boat trip to but the actual village and school was a let down. We booked the Luxor horse and carriage ride which was brilliant! 1 and a half hours trotting round seeing some of the old parts of Luxor including driving right through the souse! Take plenty of sun cream and mosquito repellent with you. Bottled water on the boat was £1.50 big bottle. All inclusive wasn't worth booking for us at £120 each so we paid for drinks as we went and our bill was £125 total. £5 for a beer, £5 for a small glass of wine. They did happy hour cocktails between 7pm and 8pm with 2 cocktails for £8.50 which we tried but were not great. If you get the chance to do this please go!

Amazing opportunity to see the treasures of Egypt with a small tour group through Viking River Cruises. Shery was our awesome tour guide who is passionate about her country and we had a small group of 20 who enjoyed each stop. Four nights on the Mayfair and three on the Omar. Top notch service on both ships. It's unbelievable to look back at what we experienced in 13 days. From standing next to the pyramids in Luxor, to riding camels, taking a hot air balloon ride above the Valley of the Kings at sunrise to seeing the temples in abu Simal we felt safe and welcomed. Highly encourage to take advantage of no waits to see these gems.

Mayflower, which was in great shape, clean, and included many on-board amenities. There was a sun deck covering the entire top of the boat and lounge areas on each deck to relax or gather with friends or family. My cabin was small but had a large, comfortable bed taking up most of the room. Closet space was ample with a small safe. A large bottle of water was provided daily. The bathroom was small but nice and clean. Down-time between the daily excursions and meals was spent on the nice sun deck. The excursions to the Nile temples were a highlight for this Egypt trip. Our cruise guide Adel was very knowledgeable and spent the time to highlight unique things at each place visited, and we came away with a better understanding of Egypt and its history. It was nice to return to the Mayflower after a long day to dine, rest and relax as the boat cruised to the next location. On-board service was very good, especially with the wait staff in the dining room. Enjoyed each meal service, especially the dinner that highlighted Egyptian dishes, but just wish that was offered every night! Read more Written 27 January 2024

  • 818merediths 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nile Done Right This was a lovely introduction to the Nile. Rooms were very well appointed and the staff was incredibly friendly and kind. Swimming on the upper deck with the Nile rolling by was magic. Food was great (so much food!). Entertainment every night was fun. We did upgrade our room when we arrived at a discount. So that might have influenced my feelings a bit. But I truly felt this was something special. Read more Written 13 July 2023

On arrival we found a basket of fruit and wine in our room. The food on the boat was fantastic, something for everyone's taste, From steak, pasta, fish, chicken and the desserts were incredible. We took so many photos and the views from the boat were amazing. Shout out to Mina, the assistant manager of the bar, he looked after us so well, Afternoon tea on the top deck was a real treat with incredible views. The swimming pool was just right and there was a seated area that was covered in to help you escape the sun. There was entertainment every night in the bar/lounge, big comfortable armchairs. I bought an alabya to really feel part of Egyptian night. The boat was moored right on front of Edfu temple which is lit up at night and was an incredible backdrop to photos. I highly recommend taking a trip on this boat. Read more Written 1 July 2023
  • DouglasL955 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful and Elegant The Farah is a beautiful ship. Compared to the other Nile Cruise Boats it makes the others look old and unkempt. The staff are absolutely wonderful and the food is excellent. As in all 3rd world countries, beware of the ice and uncooked foods. When selecting cabins stay away from low number rooms and stick to rooms numbered above 307 and 407. Below that number the rooms are basically inside cabins. If you're going to cruise the Nile make sure you have a sliding door to the outside. Read more Written 30 May 2023

We loved the days of cruising past unspoilt villages and river scenes and the less-visited sites including the amazing colours of Abydos and Denderah temples as well as re-visiting the still uncrowded classic sites at Cairo, Luxor and Aswan with a great guide! Wonderful service, food and entertainment on board the Darakum, including dining on deck several times. A highlight was a manual lock and just passing under a bridge by a few inches with the whole top deck lowered on this specially designed boat. Special thanks to Ahmed the manager, head chef Naser and restaurant manager Abbas and their teams - they all feel like friends now. Read more Written 29 May 2023

The food was okay, at times was repetitive and somewhat bland. The workers were fantastic at their jobs, but I did not necessarily appreciate the inappropriate looks and behaviors they had to my wife during this trip. Still, I do commend the work ethic they had. • P3784MHerikas 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing cruise - great staff and food. Doesn't disappoint! We very much enjoyed this cruise, the first we have ever been on, and it was an easy way to see the main sights in Upper Egypt without needing to make arrangements and do research on each. The staff on board the boat was exceptional, offering help and advice at all turns, very courteous and friendly throughout our trip. We arrived a bit early, and they prepared our cabin right away. The cabin was very comfortable with a lovely view of the Nile from the large window. The staff regularly checked to see if we needed more towels or anything of the sort. The food was great, and the staff went out of their way to offer to make special dishes (grilled chicken, for example, or grilled steak) for one of my kids who is a picky eater. I would definitely recommend this for a pleasant and seamless trip to Upper Egypt. Honestly, I can’t say enough about how great the staff and the food were. Excellent service all around. There were only three areas that I saw for improvement which I will mention for those who are considering different options. The first was that though our guide, Mustafa, was very friendly and punctual, he seemed to want to finish our visits as quickly as possible and did not show a lot of enthusiasm for the sites. I recognize we visited during Ramadan, and that he was fasting (not easy to take tours around during the heat of the day without water), so I would like to think he might be a more attentive tour guide outside of Ramadan. But overall the group felt he was giving us the minimum of information and a bit impatient and unwilling to wait for members of the group who took longer to move through the site. The Wifi on this boat is essentially non-existent. While this did not make a big difference to us in general, there were moments - like when we finished the tour and needed an uber to the airport - when it was really inconvenient. It also made it hard for us to look up additional information on the sights or use google maps to see what else we would like to visit in a town, for example, or to check in to our flights. When I desperately needed an uber to get to the airport, a staff person at reception was able to give me a hotspot, so that is always an option in a pinch. Finally, the jacuzzi did not work. Given how small the pool was (this was disappointing to the kids), we would have really enjoyed to use the jacuzzi in the evenings. When I asked at the front desk, they confirmed it was out of order. I would have preferred they told us up front that this was not available and apologize, since we had been told this would be available. Again, not a big deal, but given the price of the cruise, we sort of expected everything to be up and running. Oh, one more thing. The massage/spa person was very aggressive and at one point I was laying down to nap on my deck chair - when I opened my eyes, to my surprise, he was sitting in the chair next to me, looking at me and said ‘don’t go to sleep now. When do you want to schedule your massage?’ He had already approached me and invited me into the massage room to make his pitch, so I really didn’t need a second offer. I knew where to find him :) I had told him I did not plan on getting a message, so the insistence was a bit annoying. Read more Written 1 May 2023

Truly the most amazing staff - everyone was friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The views from the boat as we went up the Nile were truly unforgettable. Mustafa was a fantastic guide and catered to our group which was comprised of several family with kids of varying ages. Seeing the different sites was just an incredible experience and each one was different. The restaurant and reception staff were amazing - so friendly and always smiling. The food was great - different every meal and catered to a wide variety of tastes. The room was wonderful as well - and the view outside as we were sailing was just breathtaking. • clive613 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing Nile Cruise through Century Travel I booked a 9 day Nile holiday through Century Travel in Cyprus because it was recommended. The flight timings were excellent and the recommended boat seemed very good. After booking our flights were changed with a 7 hr stopover in Cairo and about 8 days before departing the boat was changed. The Sonesta St George Hotel is supposedly 5-star but we found the rooms to be very dated indeed and the food was very poor. On boarding the Sonesta St George cruise boat the surroundings were lavish and staff attentive. The cabin however was dated and bathroom dirty - see pictures below. The public areas were lovely but it was a back to back cruise, that is Luxor to Aswan and then back to Luxor. The standard definitely dropped on the return leg e.g. dirty cutlery the last night. The most disappointing thing was the reaction by Century Travel. They could not accept that the holiday package was not up to standard - in fact they blamed everything on the in-country agent. I shall not be booking through Century Travel again and do not recommend this holiday at all. Read more Written 11 April 2023

  • 86xyzx 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Nothing Special, scams all around Not sure why the there are 2 separate threads for this boat on TA December 2022 Cruse experience... Summary: Like 1* or 2* Sonesta motels in USA, anything but upscale, forget luxury First the good... The staff at the kitchen/dining are VERY helpful and kind, service is attentive. Food quality depends on your own benchmark and expectations. We stayed at Mena House for 3 nights and ate there. Food quality at St. George is nothing really compared to Mena house. But over-all it is certainly not bad. The rooms are just ok, nothing special (we stayed in top deck, view from there is better than that from lower floors). Other services are reasonable. The bad... They mention that tap water is for shower only. You need to brush using bottled water. Similarly, you need to drink bottled water. What is included? One 16oz (or could be 14oz) water/person/day. Want extra? That will be 50 EGP for a bottle, which is a pure rip-off. Captain's cocktail? Watery margarita for free. Bad quality drinks. Coffee at breakfast is cheap, flavorless, and pathetic. Room cleaning and laundry just ok, eager to charge but return laundry half dry. The evening entertainment programs are below-average at best. The ugly... The worst part of the cruse is the so called Egyptologists or the tour guides provided by Sonesta. Ours was one named Medhat Nasri, short on guiding, made no particular effort to avoid crowds, always with stretched arm for tips, collected commission from every shopping from every customer. Overall, a very avoidable soul. Then there was an unscrupulous photographer from some street corner who came in the dining room of the boat, took pictures of you without permission, got it printed the next day and demanded money. The cruse managers (named Mr. Sameer) turned a blind eye. The wifi is pathetic. Very very slow and yes, they have a 1GB data cap. But it is so slow that the data cap did not matter. Hard to believe it was the year 2022. My two cents... If money is not an issue, consider ONLY Oberoy or Sanctuary cruises. Avoid all others, and most definitely avoid Sonesta, which is a scam. If money is an issue, do a private LXR-ASW (or the vice versa) road trip with a private guide. It will be much cheaper, and most importantly, you will really enjoy Egypt. • Martin H 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not as Grand as I was Expecting This is supposedly one of the best cruise ships on the Nile according to our guide. Whilst this is a nice ship, I'm surprised that this is rated as the best ship. The rooms are a nice size as are the bathrooms, but the bath/shower is very cumbersome to operate and in need of replacement. The water pressure is poor as is the drainage. The internet on board is terrible with a lot of people complaining. You can't get it in your bedroom and even in reception the connectivity is patchy. Lunch and evening meals are good, but the breakfast is disappointing and they never change the offerings for the entire cruise. They are slightly disorganised and I was surprised and disappointed to be charged for my own drinks I had put in the fridge in the cabin. I left those drinks behind when challenged even though they didn't stock that brand on the boat. The have a lovely upper deck and it's a delight to sit there as you slowly sail down the Nile. Pros -The staff were attentive, going out of their way, over and above their duty to make you feel welcome.Every need catered to.Free water bottles replenished every day in the cabin. The food was good, many options to pick from, especially the buffet. The highlight was the guide,Hany Refaat was possibly the best guide I have ever seen.Knowledgable, and very passionate about the history, architecture of ancient Egypt. He has a gift for storytelling and makes ancient Egypt come alive magically. He is very accurate with his facts and gave our 4 days a very special touch. We traveled with young adult children and even they had the highest praise for Hany. There are so many monuments and so much information is needed to know what you’re looking at..Do yourself a favour and request him. Cons-The ship is a bit dated ,but clean.Dinner could be earlier considering the early mornings to start the tours. Read more Written 4 March 2023

The boat was beautiful, modern, and spotless clean.

The air is fresh, unlike some of the boats we had to pass to get to shore. We walked through 8 different boats during our trip. Royal Lily was the nicest. Other boats seemed very old and have the smell of cigarette. In fact we had people from other boat came over to ours to use the lounge area and eat Movenpick's Ice cream.

The food was tasty, fresh, and good quality, especially the buffet of the Egyptian dinner we had on one night. It was the best Egyptian food we had in Egypt. I'm still salivating thinking about the roasted leg of lamb, grilled fish, lentil soup, felafel, rice with nuts and dried fruit....YUM.

I have celiac disease, which means I can't eat any food made with wheat, rye, barley. After finding out my limitations, the manager of the restaurant did all he can to take care of me. He met me in the restaurant everyday to brief me on what I should not eat. He also has the chef save me food aside before sauce thicken with flour was poured on it. The chef started experiencing with glutenfree bread recipe and made me special bread. I can only say they really cared. I did not ask for any of this to be done. They did all on their own.

I stayed in many 5 star hotels while in Egypt, but Royal Lily provided me the best overall experience. I was truly impressed. If I can be on Royal Lily again without having to travel far, I'll be on it next weekend. I don't even like cruise .

I whole heartedly recommend Royal Lily without any reservation.

Management recognised we were exhuasted and suggested we avoid the very early morning wake up call to allow us a lie in. They moved our excursions in Luxor to the end of our trip - very proactive and very appreciated.

Tuesday was therefore spent lounging around the top deck, where there was a small 'plunge pool' (as opposed to a swimming pool) and loads of comfortable deck chairs. There was also a covered area to sit around when it got too hot. We had the place to ourselves for the entire morning!

We had a cabin on the upper deck, which was relatively quiet, or would have been if our fellow guests hadn't turned the volume on their tv up to a level we could hear every sound. Thoughtless, especially at 11pm when wake up calls are at 6am or so.

We echo the observations of the other reviewer. The Royal Lily benefits by being pretty new (not sure how new) and therefore is clean and is relatively un-smoke smelly....which is an issue on the boat as the cabins lack fresh air - obviously as you can't open the windows in the cabins. Having walked through many other docked ships over the 7 days, we would say that the Royal Lily was definately one of the more modern and desireable cruise ships. I expect they are all much of a muchness as far as service but we could not fault ours at any stage of the trip.

The food was good, and was well presented and varied. However there was always far too much when it was buffet served. I sincerely hope that they recycled and/or donated the leftovers in a sensible manner.

Finally, praise must be lavished on the Egyptologist - Husain - who was totally passionate, interesting and eolquent about everything we saw on our tours of the sights. I am delighted to say that my sports mad husband is now hooed on 'cultural' trips and we are talking about visiting Petra at some stage soon.
