How To Get From Florence To Pisa To See the Leaning Tower

When you hear the mention of Pisa in Tuscany, one thing springs to mind – the Leaning Tower of Pisa. After all, it is one of the most important sights in Italy, if not the world, and it can easily be reached on a day trip from Florence.

Indeed, this small Italian town lying on the banks of the Arno River is a magnet for daytrippers who journey from Florence to see the architectural phenomenon in Pisa of a solid column of marble tilting at an unbelievable angle. And, of course, to capture that must-have leaning tower of Pisa photograph with them supporting the building with one hand.

I have tried it myself, and getting the perfect image is not as easy as it looks!

Florence to Pisa Centrale by Train

Visiting Pisa by train is quick and easy, as links are regular and reliable; it’s a perfect day trip from Florence. You can hop on the Florence Pisa train from Firenze Santa Maria Novella Station near Florence’s historic centre and be in Pisa in 60 minutes. Trains from Florence Santa Maria also run to Venice if you have time on your Italy itinerary.

Once you arrive at Pisa Centrale station, it is a 20-minute walk to the major landmarks. Leave the station and follow Via Francesco Crispi to Ponte Solferino. Cross the River Arno and then continue along Piazza Solferino, which continues into Via Roma. This street takes you straight to the Piazza del Duomo, home of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

If you don’t fancy the walk, plenty of taxis are outside Pisa Centrale station.

Remember that if you buy your train tickets at the train station, you must validate them before boarding the train. The ticket only shows the date but not the time and ticket inspectors need to see this information.

Ticket validation machines are located all around the station.

If you have bought an online seat ticket or are travelling on one of Trenitalia’s high speed trains, no validation is required, as your reservation date and time will already have been confirmed.

There are tickets for single landmarks, tickets for the Leaning Tower of Pisa only, and combination tickets, which include all the landmarks. While entry to the cathedral is free, you must show a paid ticket for one of the other monuments!

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The 14th-century tower of Pisa stands 56m high and functions as a bell tower (campanile). It has become famous in its own right, similar to the bell tower in St Mark’s Square Venice . 

Climbing up inside the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a must. If you have come all this way, you have to experience the weird sensation of that angle! The breathtaking view after climbing up the 294 steps is a good reward.

Tickets to climb the tower sell out quickly at the ticket office so it is safer to pre-book a timed ticket for the Leaning Tower of Pisa . Then you can arrive and head straight to the front of the queue.

Interesting Fact:

The Tower of Pisa started leaning even before construction was over, however, in the 1990s engineers took steps to make it stable. The result is that it won’t move again for at least 300 years!

Pisa Cathedral

Next to the leaning tower is the beautiful 11th-century Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral (Pisa Cathedral). Don’t miss the Basilica dome with its stunning fresco depicting the Assumption of Mary.

The rich exterior decoration contains multicoloured marble, mosaic, and numerous bronze objects from the spoils of war.

San Giovanni Baptistery

Next to the cathedral are the San Giovanni Baptistery and the Camposanto cemetery. The Baptistery was used to baptize people, so they were allowed to enter the church. It is now also renowned worldwide for the acoustics that vocalists can create in its round, domed building. If you are lucky, you may hear one of the daily choir practices.

Pisa Baptistery was built before the tower and also slightly leans to one side. The cause of all the ‘leaning’ in Pisa is the rich sand and clay soil which is a nightmare to build on.

Campo Santo

Campo Santo Old Cemetery is a stunningly beautiful building with interesting 13th-century frescoes and information boards in Italian and English. The colourful fresco ‘Inferno’ explores the possibility of heaven and hell. The site also contains many Roman graves. A combination ticket for the Piazza dei Miracoli attractions includes Campo Santo.

The cemetery was constructed on Holy Soil from Jerusalem which was transported back to Pisa in the 13th century, giving it its name Campo Santo (Holy Field).

What Else Can You Do In Pisa Away from Piazza dei Miracoli?

Believe it or not, there is life away from the Piazza dei Miracoli.

Stroll along Pisa’s cobbled lanes and find a quiet spot to sit away from the hustle and bustle around the leaning tower. Head inside one of Pisa’s tavernas for a delicious glass of Vinsanto (local dessert wine) accompanied by traditional biscotti (Tuscan biscuit), or sit in the shade of a fig tree and enjoy watching the world go by. 

Visitors looking for authentic Italian ceramics and leather goods can visit the artisan shops in Pisa, which sell beautifully crafted pieces.

If the day’s heat becomes too much, stroll along the River Arno’s banks and admire the palazzos (grand houses) that line its banks. See if you can spot the white marble Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina, which looks somewhat out of character compared to the pastel-coloured buildings.

On the opposite side of the Arno River, the Museo Nazionale is the best museum in Pisa to discover the history of this beautiful Tuscan city. Artefacts include paintings, sculptures and religious manuscripts.

This all started with the joining instructions - I certainly was a little cynical of this (and other) trips all advertising the "skip the line" feature but from an email with a picture of where we had to meet (incredibly useful by the way) to the quick entry which did indeed skip the line, this trip started well. Elizabeth was our incredible tour guide. She was immensely knowledgeable, and we learned so much from her that we would not have learned had we toured on our own! I had managed to mess up my knee right before my vacation and spent most of it in a heavy brace. As an archaeologist, Alba is obviously passionate about the subject matter and her zeal in telling us the history and stories of the Vatican was infectious. The group was small (only 8 people) which made it feel a little more intimate. We are so happy that we decided to do this tour with The Roman Guy and would highly recommend it to others.

We were very excited for our Day Trip. Overall it was a good day and we were able to see multiple things we wouldn't have been able to see on our own. However I think this tour needs to be re-evaluated with respect to covid regulations. In Pisa, we were given an hour to see the Tower and the Cathedral. However, with the timings of the tower climb and the line to go up due to covid capacity we only had enough time to climb up and down the tour and take a few photos on the grounds. We unfortunately weren't able to go into the Cathedral. Next, was Vinci, which is an adorable little town. We had a delicious lunch at one of the local restaurants and walked the upper terrace of the grounds around the Leonardo Da Vinci Museums. However, our time slot into the museum was pushed an hour due to covid cleaning, which ended up delaying the rest of our afternoon. Also, we were given an hour to see the museum. My wife and I are true museum people who love to take our time and truly read and look at what is on display. The museum has two buildings and A LOT of information to read and models, artwork to look at. So we felt like we had to rush through the displays and couldn't enjoy what the museum had to offer in order to keep on our schedule. I would suggest that for future bookings, the client be asked if they would like extra time padded into the itinerary for the museum. The last two stops were in Florence outside of downtown. The Monastery was beautiful but wish we had about 10-15 more minutes (we had 20). Last was the Piazza Michelangelo where we were able to soak in the beauty of Florence and our tour guide took some nice photos of us. This tour was good but could be great if it just had more buffer time worked in. I think 9 hours would have been more appropriate than 7 hours.

You can't go to Italy and not see the Leaning Tower of Pisa! This day trip was perfect for my girlfriend and I. We had roundtrip transportation there and back and we got to see the Da Vinci Museum which was pretty cool. The best part was trying to line up our hands correctly for the perfect picture "holding up the tower". People all over the lawn in front of it were doing the same. It's a lot harder than it looks! But a very fun experience.

The inside story

Why does the Leaning Tower of Pisa lean? The Romanesque 183ft (56m) campanile, was begun in 1170 but started leaning immediately due to the porous clay soil beneath it.

Building diagonal floors to offset the lean was attempted in 1272, but didn’t help. In 1372, the tower was leaning 4.5ft (1.4m). By 1993, it was 17ft (5.4m) and the tower was closed for ten years amid fears it might fall. But by 2013, it had started to lean slightly back in the opposite direction. What was happening?

Major engineering work had drained the water beneath, reinforced the foundations with concrete pillars, and bound the tower with steel cables. It worked. The tower reverted to the leaning angle of 300 years previously.

Some engineers believe it is possible to straighten the tower completely, but nobody wants that. Current predictions are that it will continue to straighten, stop, and then begin to lean again, but much more slowly than in previous centuries. The people of Pisa are happy. Three million tickets are sold each year to visit a leaning tower – not a straight one.

About the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Few people initially realize that the tower is part of a much larger complex at the Square of Miracles. Here, you’ll also find the Cathedral of Pisa (the Duomo), the baptistery and the monumental cemetery – all in the Romanesque style.

Construction began in 1173 and was completed in 1399 under the guidance of various architects. Alas, these guys didn’t know their Greek very well. The name ‘Pisa’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘marshland’ – not the kind of foundation you’d want for any tall building. Indeed, the baptistery and the cathedral are also sinking into the ground.

The other sights of the Piazza dei Miracoli are also historically very interesting and worth a visit. For example, the cemetery is made of no normal earth. It was created using 53 shiploads of holy earth taken from the hill of Calvary in Jerusalem so that the dead could enjoy some quality rest. Galileo was baptized in the baptistery here and spent some time throwing things off the tower when he got older. One of his experiments involved dropping two cannonballs of different weights to show that they fell at the same speed.

People forget that the tower’s main function was as a campanile: a bell tower. Accordingly, it has seven bells – one for each note of the musical scale. They have their own names: Assunta (the biggest), Crocifisso, San Ranieri, Dal Pozzo, Pasquereccia, Terza, and Vespruccio. They are still used to ring before masses and at midday each day. Try to time your visit to see (hear) the tower doing its stuff.

From San Rossore train station, take the subway and get off at Piazza Fancelli. Walk to Via Andrea Pisano, turn left and continue until you reach the Piazza dei Miracoli
