Tennis Canada announced Wednesday it will tour the country with the Davis Cup trophy in celebration of Canada’s victory in the 2022 event.

Canada won the Davis Cup for the first time in the competition’s 123-year history by defeating Australia in Malaga, Spain, in November.

Canada defeated Germany in the quarterfinal and Italy in the semifinal before Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov swept their singles matches against Australia to clinch the title.

The trophy will make stops in all 10 Canadian provinces, including at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in Vancouver on April 14-15, and the National Bank Open in both Toronto and Montreal in August.

Canada, which has automatically qualified for the 2023 Davis Cup finals, will begin its title defence starting with the group stage in September, followed by the knockout stage in November should Canada advance.

Robert Bettauer was Tennis Canada's director of tennis development some three decades ago when the federation created a vision statement with some lofty goals.

One of the top priorities was to one day win a Davis Cup title. On Sunday, Canada finally did it with a historic victory over Australia in Malaga, Spain.

"I just sent [former coaching director] Pierre Lamarche a text and said, 'Mission accomplished,"' Bettauer said.

A sky-high goal for a program that wasn't a tennis power at the time, Canada has slowly but surely become a player on the sport's international scene.

Back in the day, lower-level interim goals were set and eventually met, said Bettauer, a longtime tennis broadcaster and CEO of the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

Daniel Nestor became a force on the doubles scene. Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic later took things to a higher level in singles with deep Grand Slam runs in the mid-2010s.

Bianca Andreescu delivered a breakthrough with a US Open singles title in 2019 and Leylah Fernandez reached the 2021 final in New York.

In men's singles, Canada has two top-20 players in Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

"There's no doubt they showed up in Spain this year ready to win it," said Tennis Canada president Michael Downey.

Alexis Galarneau and Gabriel Diallo rounded out the Canadian roster. Captain Frank Dancevic pulled the strings and was a motivational force.

Shapovalov lost just six games in his opening singles victory Sunday over Thanasi Kokkinakis and Auger-Aliassime clinched it with a straight-sets win over Alex de Minaur.

"This is a massive milestone and achievement for Canadian tennis," Bettauer told The Canadian Press. "I'm going to have to digest it for a while.

"But you can tell I'm experiencing a very happy glow as many, many people are across the country."

'It was time for these young men to break through'

Canada made its Davis Cup debut in 1913 but had never previously won the trophy. Canada came close in 2019 but lost the final to Spain.

"It was time for Canada," Downey said. "It was time for these young men to break through."

Bettauer, who represented Canada as a Davis Cup player and coach, recalled that initial vision statement some 30 years ago also included goals of Olympic gold and a title at the Fed Cup — the women's international team event now called the Billie Jean King Cup.

Nestor and Sebastien Lareau won men's doubles gold at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney.

  • Auger-Aliassime, Pospisil lead Canada to Davis Cup final with doubles win over Italy
  • Canada overcomes opening match loss, advances to Davis Cup semis with win over Germany

Downey said plans will soon be made to celebrate the Davis Cup title. A countrywide trophy tour with stops at tennis clubs and schools is a possibility, he said.

"When kids see the trophy and they know that Felix and Denis and Vasek and others delivered, it's going to inspire them," Downey said.

Canada posted a 2-1 record in last September's qualification round in Valencia. Canada beat South Korea and Spain before sealing a berth in last week's playoffs when Auger-Aliassime earned a singles win in a 2-1 loss to Serbia.

Canada make history with first Davis Cup trophy win

Davis Cup Canada

Canada were crowned Davis Cup champions for the first time in the nation’s history on Sunday.

Felix Auger-Aliassime put in a perfect week of tennis in the Davis Cup finals to set up the famous triumph.

Auger-Aliassime won his singles match to add to the win by Denis Shapovalov earlier on Sunday, and give Canada an unassailable 2-0 lead against Australia.

Credit must got to Auger-Aliassime as the match proved more testing than the 6-3, 6-4 scoreline suggested as Alex de Minaur earned eight chances to break the serve of Auger-Aliassime.

However, Auger-Aliassime found his serve came through when he needed it most, and his baseline game was also rock-solid.

“The emotions are tough to describe,” said Auger-Aliassime.

“Denis and I grew up together, dreaming of these types of stage, dreaming of winning the Davis Cup. It’s a great moment for myself and for the country.”

Shapovalov had come out firing against Thanasi Kokkinakis, establishing a 4-0 lead, and eventually running out a 6-2, 6-4 winner, having recovered from an injury scare in the last four battle.

The former Canadian No 1 wobbled when he suffered a break back at 5-2 in the second set, however he would steel himself to serve out the match at the second time of asking.

That set of circumstances left De Minaur needing to reproduce the heroics he came up with in the semi-final against Croatia, when he thrashed former US Open champion Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2 if he was going to take the final into a deciding doubles match, but he was unable to overcome Auger-Aliassime, who was the form player of the week without a doubt.

Shapovalov was also understandably thrilled with the result which is a big moment for the two young stars leading the Canada side.

“From when we were juniors, watching Vasek [Pospisil], Milos Raonic and Daniel Nestor play Davis Cup, we wanted to do the same, and maybe even to win it one day.

“It was tough to lose in 2019, it was an empty feeling and we wanted it badly this time,” he said.

For Vasek Pospisil, the elder statesman of the team, it was an emotional moment.

“We’ve been dreaming about this for several years,” he said.

“To be here as world champions, I’m speechless. These guys are not kids any more. They’ve been crushing it. You can’t win this event without tremendous team chemistry, going forwards as one unit, and all these guys represent exactly that.”

Taylor Pendrith enjoys 'unreal' maiden TOUR win at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Change Text Size

McKINNEY, Texas — The sun broke loose at last over THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. It shined directly on Taylor Pendrith.

After a wrenching sequence of holes that saw his one-shot lead tied on the 16 th and lost on the 17 th , the 32-year-old Canadian holed a short putt for birdie Sunday at the par-5 finisher to win his first PGA TOUR title in 74 starts. He shot a final-round 67 to finish at 23-under par on a steamy, soggy TPC Craig Ranch and beat Ben Kohles by one.

Pendrith held the lead of much of the day, which dawned with threatening clouds after 1.9 inches of rain fell overnight.

He lost that lead at the par-4 eighth, when he made bogey and Kohles made birdie. That was about the time the sun appeared for the first time. Minutes later, Pendrith two-putted for birdie on the par-5 ninth; Kohles made par. They were tied at the turn, with names like Jake Knapp, Matt Wallace, Alex Noren and Aaron Rai close behind.

Taylor Pendrith’s bunker birdie is the Shot of the Day

Forecasters expected more rain — typical for North Texas in May. But none fell. The air at times was nearly still, a rare occurrence at the annual springtime affair bearing the name of one of the greatest competitors in the history of tournament golf. After three days of spitting mist and overcast skies, the final nine holes were airy and bright.

The other contenders faded late. Not Pendrith or Kohles. Pendrith holed gritty putts for par at the par-4 16 th and the par-3 17 th , holes Kohles birdied. But Kohles mismanaged a short greenside shot from deep rough on the last, then missed the 5-foot par putt that would’ve forced a playoff.

Pendrith said it happened so fast, going from thinking he had to make eagle to tie to steeling himself over a 3-footer to win. He banged it home.

“It was all a blur, the last hour,” Pendrith said. “To finally get it done feels unbelievable.”

At about the time Pendrith was marking his ball on the last green, his friend Mackenzie Hughes loped from the locker room with three cans of cold Miller Lite in his grasp. Pendrith’s friend, fellow countryman and former teammate at Kent State made his way through the crowd to watch the long-awaited triumph. He gave the beverages to Pendrith (although he did pour a little on Pendrith's shirt first in celebration) and his caddie, and kept one for himself.

“This is a weird game we play,” Hughes said. “I’m guessing Taylor thought the same thing. He was there, ready for the opportunity.”

It was a gesture he felt he owed Pendrith. When Hughes was in contention at the 2016 RSM Classic, Pendrith got up early and drove four hours to watch. Hughes won.

“He needs to go enjoy it,” said Hughes, a two-time TOUR winner. “They’re few and far between.”

Taylor Pendrith’s Round 4 winning highlights from THE CJ CUP

The win means 500 FedExCup points for Pendrith, vaulting him 57 spots to 34 th in the rankings. He won $1.7 million and a two-year exemption. It means he and his wife Megan, who planned on a beach getaway next week, have to sort travel to Charlotte for the Wells Fargo Championship, a Signature Event. Everything has changed.

“I've held the 54-hole lead before and haven't got it done,” Pendrith said. “Learned a lot from that and tried to be a little better today and stay in my own lane and just put my head down and go to work. To come out on top feels unreal.”

He made a tough, snaking putt on the 17 th to stay a shot behind Kohles. Both players hit good drives on the 18 th . Only Pendrith found the green in two. Kohles didn’t accelerate enough through his own putt — “You live and learn,” he said — and the stakes swung back to Pendrith.

The putt for birdie was longer than he wanted. He breathed deep and steadied himself over the ball. He tried not to think of how much it mattered.

“This is the straightest putt you’ve had all year,” his caddie told him. “Just knock it in.”

Pendrith didn’t used to consider mental fortitude a strength. But he said he’d been seeing a mental coach for about six weeks, “just working on acceptance.” He reminded himself of their work as he settled over the career-changing putt. Moments later, he was being cheered by the gallery. His wife and young son, Hayes, were trotting out to meet him for a hug.

“We were supposed to be going to Myrtle Beach,” Megan Pendrith said. “Now we have to figure out how we’re going to get to Charlotte and where we’re going to stay.”

She caught herself and smiled.

“All wonderful problems,” she said.

The next hour was another blur. Pendrith participated in his first trophy presentation. He did his first interviews as a TOUR winner. He shook a lot of hands. He had another beer.

“Doesn’t feel real yet,” he said.

“You know, it feels unbelievable, and to see some of those names on this trophy, it's crazy,” Pendrith said. “I still can't believe that I'm a winner of this tournament.”

2024 Wells Fargo Championship live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, golf coverage, radio

One week and one big-time event separate players from the second major championship of the season.

wells-fargo-championship-flag-g.jpg

An elevated purse, additional FedEx Cup points and one last trophy before the PGA Championship are all up for grabs this week at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. With 69 of the best players on the PGA Tour and many of those names who aim to factor in a week's time at Valhalla in the field, the Wells Fargo Championship is likely to produce a major championship-type leaderboard on a major championship-type test.

Quail Hollow once again hosts the Wells Fargo Championship as it has done so in the past, including last year when Wyndham Clark broke through for his first career PGA Tour victory. Clark has since transformed into a completely different golfer winning the U.S. Open later that year and has since tacked on this year's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am while consistently contending in these signature events.

While Clark was the top man a year ago, Rory McIlroy has been on that perch over the last decade or so. Three times a winner at Quail Hollow and fresh off his 25th career PGA Tour victory and 35th birthday, the four-time major champion hopes to continue this upward trajectory ahead of his return to Valhalla -- the site of his last major championship triumph in 2014.

McIlroy's drought consists of major championships, but that of Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood and Cameron Young consists of PGA Tour wins. This lot has combined to get shutout over the last two years and will hope to breakthrough for a much-needed title in Charlotte.

Masters contenders Collin Morikawa and Max Homa plan to tee it up while Hideki Matsuyama and Viktor Hovland round out the action at Quail Hollow.

Tafur: Raiders owner Mark Davis letting his hires of Antonio Pierce, Tom Telesco do the talking

HENDERSON, NEVADA - JANUARY 24: Owner and managing general partner Mark Davis (C) of the Las Vegas Raiders poses for photos with Tom Telesco (L) and Antonio Pierce (R) during a news conference introducing Telesco as the general manager and Pierce as the head coach of the Raiders at the Las Vegas Raiders Headquarters/Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center on January 24, 2024 in Henderson, Nevada. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

HENDERSON, Nev. — There were only two seats on the stage this time, one for new Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce and one for new general manager Tom Telesco .

Wednesday marked the fifth big news conference for Raiders owner Mark Davis in nine years, but this time Davis introduced his two new hires and then took a seat at the back of the room to watch. In what was a strong hint, Davis told reporters to ask all their questions now because Pierce and Telesco weren’t going to be talking much afterward.

“They’ve got some work to do,” Davis said.

Davis had sat on the stage when Jack Del Rio, Jon Gruden, Mike Mayock and then Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler were officially introduced, but this time was different. There was no parade of former players like at the news conference for Gruden. And there was no sales job like when Davis hired two former New England Patriots two years ago and McDaniels needed a fresh coat of paint after he left the Denver Broncos a mess and then left the Indianapolis Colts at the altar.

Pierce doesn’t need a sales job. He won the full-time job last month when, as the interim coach, he beat the division-rival Chargers, Chiefs and Broncos — the Kansas City win coming on the road. The players backed him and he brought passion, swagger and the promise of “ill intent” toward opponents, as he said Wednesday.

go-deeper

Tafur: Antonio Pierce is exactly what the Raiders need — the opposite of the Patriot Way

Telesco didn’t need a sales job either, regardless of what you think about his tenure with the Chargers before he was fired last month. Telesco has experience (he drafted nine Pro Bowlers in a decade) and knows the division well, and once Davis got cold feet on interim general manager Champ Kelly and Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds, Telesco knew what notes to hit in his second interview on Monday. (Kelly has been asked to stay on as assistant GM.)

It all came together quickly at that point, and Pierce and Telesco actually met, kind of an important detail for a “partnership” that they both discussed Wednesday. Davis made Telesco the rare recently fired GM to get a second chance.

Just the beginning. pic.twitter.com/zNSJXIJeUy — Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) January 25, 2024

Telesco was blown away when he a got tour of the Raiders’ massive, state-of-the-art facility and he is well aware of the talent on the roster. Then there is the new cash-cow stadium, which has given Davis the means to pay McDaniels $50 million in owed salary to go away after just 24 games.

go-deeper

Raiders' Mark Davis opens up about firing McDaniels, Ziegler

“You look at the resources that are here and the head coach that’s here,” Telesco said. “I think we can win. That’s why I want to be here.”

In news conferences past, Davis would not only answer questions on stage but also hang around after — in a tradition started by his late father, Al — and answer less formal questions in a scrum with reporters. But on Wednesday, Davis left right after the news conference.

Maybe because the message is out there. The players got their guy in Pierce, and Davis matched him with an experienced GM. Now, everybody take care of business and make the playoffs for only the third time in Davis’ 13 years.

There was no nauseating talk of a culture change because, as Pierce said, his team’s DNA was on display during the 5-4 finish with him at the helm:

“Ill intent, physicality, toughness, speed, attitude, full-blown Maxx Crosby effort.”

davis cup trophy tour canada

Telesco saw that first-hand when he was on the wrong end of a 63-21 beating last month. (He actually had screamed uncle when it was 56-7 and headed down the elevators to the locker room, where he was told he had missed the one-handed pick-six touchdown by Jack Jones .)

“Never seen anything like it,” Telesco said.

His main job now is to work with Pierce and get him more players to turn around the three one-score losses the Raiders had down the stretch.

“Our football team takes on the identity of your head coach, and that’s what we’re going to have here,” Telesco said. “That’s what we’re going to build around.”

The foundation starts with defense, as the Raiders improved to ninth in the NFL in points allowed under defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and his old linebackers coach, Pierce. Pierce made sure to thank Graham for attending the news conference, and if he doesn’t get a head coaching job, he will surely be back in the fold.

Telesco later danced around a question about quarterback Aidan O’Connell , as the Raiders will likely upgrade there, and no one really knows what will happen with free agent running back Josh Jacobs , who Pierce and Davis love. But the bar is high for Telesco and Pierce, as they continue to get to know each other.

“I think it’s going to be a partnership that we can grow forward for many years,” Pierce said. “Hopefully that comes with a lot of W’s and a lot of Raider chants. Our vision is clear. Win the division. Get into the playoffs and hoist that Lombardi Trophy. That’s not a promise; that’s our vision.”

The first thing the two must agree on is a new offensive coordinator. The Raiders have already requested interviews with six coaches, but lost one candidate when Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher was promoted to offensive coordinator. The others are Kliff Kingsbury (USC senior offensive analyst/quarterbacks coach), Zac Robinson ( Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator/QBs coach), Luke Getsy (former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator), Alex Van Pelt (former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator) and Mike Sullivan ( Pittsburgh Steelers QBs coach).

go-deeper

Raiders offensive coordinator search: 9 candidates for Antonio Pierce to consider

What is Pierce looking for?

“Minimum 24 points,” he said, smiling.

(That would have given the Raiders four more wins last season.)

“No, I’ll be honest … I don’t think everybody is meant to play for the Raiders or coach for the Raiders,” Pierce said. “I think that’s going to be something I really dig into as we go into that process.”

He scoffed at the notion that he just wants to run the ball and play defense, and he is looking for a teacher that players can believe in and then adjust on the fly.

“But you know what you see in the National Football League,” Pierce said. “You’ve got to be able to run the football, play-action pass. What are the Raiders known for? The vertical passing game, right?

“We want to see the shots down the field. We want the explosive plays. That has to be a part of the creativity.”

Telesco nodded his head, and then nodded at the late Al Davis.

“The Raiders have an identity on offense,” he said. “It’s speed and get the ball downfield. I think that’s going to definitely be at least a part of that. But there’s more that goes along with that as far as being able to run the ball. We’ll find the right offensive coordinator that’s going to fit this team.”

The fact that Pierce was expected to be hired didn’t diminish how cool a day Wednesday was for him.

“I am humbled and honored to be a kid from inner-city Los Angeles,” Pierce said, “to be the head coach of a team that he grew up watching, rooting for, cheering for, rocking the colors, rocking the Starter jacket, and now sitting here doing each and every day with the purpose of one thing only: Just win.”

In the back of the room, Davis nodded.

Golf | Rory McIlroy tops Wells Fargo again; Rose Zhang takes Founders Cup to end Nelly Korda’s streak

davis cup trophy tour canada

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for a record fourth time Sunday, overcoming a two-stroke deficit to beat Xander Schauffele by five strokes.

No other player has won the event more than twice.

McIlroy closed with a 6-under 65 at Quail Hollow, playing the final 11 holes in 6-under even with a double bogey on the 18th hole. He finished at 17-under 267 after four straight rounds in the 60s and won his second straight PGA Tour event after teaming with Shane Lowry to take the Zurich Classic two weeks ago in New Orleans.

Schauffele shot 71.

McIlroy trailed by two after Schauffele made an eagle on the par-5 seventh, but the world’s second-ranked player quickly shifted into another gear.

The star from Northern Ireland pulled even after birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 and then made a 33-foot eagle putt on the 10th for his first lead of the tournament.

McIlroy’s finish was reminiscent of 2010 when he carded six straight 3s en route to a final round 62 to beat Phil Mickleson for his first career PGA Tour win. He also won the event in 2015 and 2021.

CLIFTON, N.J. — Rose Zhang won the Cognizant Founders Cup to end Nelly Korda’s record-tying LPGA Tour winning streak, rallying to beat Madelene Sagstrom by two strokes.

Zhang birdied four of the final five holes to overcome a three-shot deficit in a thrilling final-round duel with Sagstrom after the two broke away from the field Saturday.

Zhang shot a 6-under 66, birdieing Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 18 at Upper Montclair Country Club. Sagstrom bogeyed the 16th in a 69.

Korda, who struggled the final two days after playing magnificently in winning the five straight events she entered, had a second straight 73 and tied for seventh at 7-under.

After her final putt, Zhang bent over and put her hands to her mouth, before walking to hug caddie Oliver Brett. The two-time NCAA champion at Stanford who won last year at nearby Liberty National in her pro debut, finished at 24 under 264 total — the best score in the three years the event has been held here.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Doug Barron won the Regions Tradition for his third PGA Tour Champions victory and first major title, shooting a 4-under 68 to hold off Steven Alker by two strokes.

Barron finished at 17-under 271 at Greystone in the first of the season’s five senior majors. He ended a victory drought dating to the 2021 Shaw Charity Classic. Wins eluded him throughout his PGA Tour career, where he didn’t finish higher than third in 238 events.

But there wasn’t a lot of drama in this one as he outlasted some of the tour’s biggest names with a bogey-free round and a casual tap-in finish. Hall of Famers Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington ended up being the ones offering congratulatory hugs at the end. Barron called it “a dream come true to beat all these great players.”

Alker had a 63 to match the tournament record for Greystone.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Chris Gotterup won the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 67 for a six-stroke victory at Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

The tournament was played opposite the Wells Fargo Championship. a signature event in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gotterup got a spot in the PGA Championship next week but not in the Masters or a guaranteed spot in the remaining two $20 million signature events.

Four strokes ahead entering the round, Gotterup bogeyed the first two holes, then rebounded with a birdie-eagle-birdie burst on the next three. The 24-year-old former University of Oklahoma player won in his 27th tour start, finishing at 22-under 262.

Alistair Docherty (64) and Davis Thompson (68) tied for second.

Blades Brown, the second 16-year-old in two weeks to make a cut, tied for 26th at 19 under after a 69. Last week, Kris Kim advanced to the weekend in the Byron Nelson.

More in Golf

Rory McIlroy won’t be returning to the PGA Tour board. He said Wednesday that a plan to replace Webb Simpson was met with resistance from board members. Simpson is one of six player-directors. He recently offered to give up his seat, but only if McIlroy were to replace him. McIlroy would have needed board approval to be reinstated to a position that he resigned from last November. But McIlroy said ahead of the Wells Fargo Championship that conversations surrounding his potential return became “pretty complicated and messy." Simpson said he now plans to fulfill his three-year term on the board.

Rory McIlroy won’t rejoin PGA Tour board, says others were ‘uncomfortable’ with his potential return

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events.

How to Watch 2024 Olympic Men’s Basketball Tournament & Schedule

The United States, led by LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Steph Curry, are looking to bring home its 17th gold medal, but the international competition will be as tough as it's ever been.

davis cup trophy tour canada

It’s hard to imagine a Summer Olympics without basketball, and perhaps even harder still to imagine it without a U.S. team competing for another gold medal in the sport.

Since basketball first became an Olympics sport in 1936, there have been 20 tournaments to determine hardcourt supremacy. The United States has walked away with gold 16 times, a mark of dominance seldom seen in sports.

And in the process, the U.S. has provided some of the most indelible moments in Olympics history. Who can forget the 1992 Dream Team , which saw professional NBA stars enter the Olympics for the first time, delighting crowds with its sheer talent and star power in Barcelona?

Well, it’s time to make some more memories, and the United States is sending some of its all-time greats like LeBron James , Kevin Durant , and Steph Curry to the 2024 Paris Olympics to bring home gold once more. But, as has been a growing trend over the last couple of decades, the international game is growing stronger, and victory is by no means assured.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Olympics Men’s Basketball Tournament in Paris.

So that means there’s still four spots up for grabs.

Who else might qualify for the tournament?

Beginning July 2, four qualifying tournaments, each featuring six teams, will be held across the world. Here’s how they’re organized:

The six teams are divided up into two groups of three. Each nation will play the other nations in their group once, with the top two in each group advancing to a knockout round semi-final, to be held July 6.

First place in Group A will take on second place in Group B. First place in Group B will take on second place in Group A.

The winners will meet in a final game on July 7, with the winner qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 12 qualified teams will be divided up into three groups of four and play each team in their group once.  Teams will get two points for a win, one point for a loss and zero points for a loss by forfeit. The top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout phase, as well as the two third-place teams with the most points. In the event of two teams being tied, the result of their head-to-head matchup will determine who advances.

All Group stage games will be held at Pierre Mauroy Stadium, located in Lille, about 140 miles north of Paris. All knockout round games will be held in Bercy Arena in Paris.

Davis Cup Trophy Fun Facts

Photo: Peter Power

Davis Cup by Rakuten is the premier international team event in men’s tennis. Also known as the World Cup of Tennis, it is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from over 140 competing countries.

The trophy that is awarded each year to the winning nation is just as prestigious as the event itself. Have a closer look at the hardware that Team Canada presented by Sobeys took home from their memorable, history-making week in Malaga, Spain last November when they were crowned World Champions for the first time .

RELATED: TENNIS CANADA UNVEILS PLANS FOR COUNTRYWIDE TOUR OF HISTORIC DAVIS CUP TROPHY

The first trophy was made by a firm of silversmiths called Shreve, Crump and Low of Boston, Massachusetts. Its official name was the “International Lawn Tennis Challenge Trophy” until the event was renamed Davis Cup in honour of founder Dwight D. Davis’ original donation to the trophy, the famous bowl, which he donated in 1900. The bowl, which was designed by William Durgin and crafted by Rowland Rhodes, is engraved with the champions from 1900-1919. It is made of sterling silver and the interior is burnished in gold.

In 1921, a silver tray, known as the “The Salver” was added by Messrs, Black, Starr, and Frost of New York. It is engraved with the champions from 1920-1932.

The plinths of the Davis Cup trophy are mahogany. The champions from 1933 onwards are engraved on them with Australia being the first country put on the third plinth following their triumph in 2003. The names of our Canadian champions are also engraved on this plinth.

The trophy is 110 cm tall, 107 cm in diameter at its widest point and weighs a total of 231.5 pounds. It has toured the globe numerous times, including for the centenary celebration in 2000.

The United States has captured the most trophies in Davis Cup history with 32 followed by Australia with 28, and then France and Great Britain each with 10. In 2022, Canada joined Argentina, Italy, Serbia, South Africa, and Switzerland as first-time winners of the world’s largest annual international team competition in sport.
